2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing?

This is like a complicated mess of what I have been like and might still be like lol. I would say that I feel like I am one of those Oracles from Ancient Greece (just not drugged up on psychedelic drugs or going through mini demonic possession episodes) while and during writing. I have scene and story idea visions, characters having conversations going back and forth in my head. I’ll have certain songs or a certain music on repeat. Like I had mentioned before, when I was writing Shattered, I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3, 9 times. For some reason Orlando Bloom’s voice and this one scene just kept giving me ideas. I’ll even play movies on repeat that have given me inspiration or ideas while I write.

Before I even start, I’ll do major research, I’ll print out a photo of the character I am going to use, just have it within reach where I can look at it while I write. I often try to deal with the story summary before I start writing, I often make and do the story banners afterwards. If I need a break while writing, I likely will go read a book I have on Kindle, even sometimes other fan fics. One weird thing is, I can only write with a 5 subject 5-star notebook I just like how the paper is fresh, firm and crisp along with a certain 5 lead model type machinal pencil.

3. What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?

Probably because I’ve written a finished script with this type of plotline and just finished a Nicole Snow book where it’s a Marriage Agreement for business purposes and one of my favorite books called A Mutual Favor, I read back in 2009 had a similar type of plot, I love writing those Fake Dating, Marriage, Arranged Marriage, Deals or Pacts type of stories. I often can come up with some pretty good plot lines for those. I also love writing hot, steamy, smutty, erotic romance stories as well.  I also don’t mind writing romantic crime thriller stories either.

I like a whole bunch and do follow them on Tumblr, it’s kind of hard to say if I have a favorite or any that I admire. You probably will have to set aside a day where you can take all that time and go through both of my Tumblr account archive posts. I just jump around to different things on what I am in the mood to read when it comes to fan fiction or books.

11. Weirdest thing you’ve ever written/thought about writing/etc.?

I haven’t exactly done it yet, and I have thought about this on and off for the past 10 years. I’ve been in recovery now for 12 years after a 15-year battle with Atypical Anorexia, Binge Eating Disorder, I think it would seriously scare or freak other people out if they saw the internal point of view of the ED (eating disorder). I would say writing a fan fiction where the readers would hear what the Eating Disorder Voice sounds like or what I had to hear while I was sick and going through that living hell. It still scares me; I also can’t believe what I even did to my own body at times or how it didn’t die on me. I still have no idea how it didn’t kill me and failed to do so 3 times. I’ve even described that having an eating disorder is like if you combined The Exorcist and Jurassic Park into a blender and that is what you’d have and likely expect. I’m just concerned it might be misinterpreted as that I am Glamourizing my fatal mental illness, when I really am not, just wanting to show the brutal truth of what it’s like to go and live through.

Scott struggles with the decision for a moment then ultimately agrees she’s right. He settles for caressing her skin as they quietly talk until they’re awake enough to get up properly and eventually hear more stirring from his mom’s room.

Woods, Look this mother fucker DISPISES cats. He thinks they're gremlins and refuses to ever pet one he hasn't had a bad experience, just doesn't like them, claims that 'they're satan's little bitches'. He also would rather have a pet that you can call do cuddle, rather than hope not to get scratched. He either would have a German Shepherd or Great Dane. He wants a dog that will make him seem cool 🥶😈 but everyone knows that man is a sweetheart.

Hudson, He is most definitely a dog person, He does not care about the dogs are better than cats argument. 'It's an idiotic argument, Besides, we all know dogs are better'. His dog is a family dog, she's very friendly to anyone who comes by Woods, Mason, etc and she loves his kids. At first, Hudson hated the idea of having a dog, it would be a liability, but he was the first person who genuinely fell in love with the dog. He would have a German Shepard, who is military trained because he wants to protect his family.

So, first off, my name is Derek.  I’m the mun.  I just recently turned 30 and I’m from Indiana.  I work in a preschool, essentially as a glorified baby sitter.  I help the teachers get their breaks.

Outside of Tumblr RP, I enjoy video games, yugioh, reading comics, general super hero related stuff, watching movies, playing Pokemon Go (I help run the local PoGo community) general board games, watching my shows, figure collecting, and cosplay, most of which I’m sure is stuff many of you also enjoy.  My fandoms include Doctor Who (obviously), DC, Star Wars, The Legend of Korra/ATLA (I’m one of the few that likes LoK more than ATLA), Marvel, Star Trek, Firefly, Power Rangers, The Walking Dead, Yugioh, Pokemon, Sherlock, general Nintendo fandom, Digimon and Harry Potter.

My favorite musician is Weird Al Yankovic.  

My favorite book is Look Me in the Eye by John Elder Robbison.  As someone who’s been diagnosed with aspergers syndrome myself, this book really spoke to me in my original read through and since then I’ve purchased it multiple times.  I own at least three or four different copies of this book, partially because I kept loaning it out to people.

My favorite book series is the Harry Potter series.  Don’t ask me for a favorite book in the series, I love them all about equally.  

As for comics, right now my favorite thing I’m reading is the Power Rangers series that Boom is putting out.  Some of my favorites of all time include Power Ranger Soul of the Dragon, the Star Trek TNG/Doctor Who crossover, the Power Rangers/Justice League Crossover, the original Spider-Gwen series, Poison Ivy Cycle of Life and Death, The Dark Knight Returns (I know anything Frank Miller related is a bit controversial but I enjoy it for what it is) and Batman: Hush.

Favorite movies include UHF, Scott Pilgrim VS the World, Captain America The Winter Soldier, Captain America the First Avenger, Avengers End Game, the Justice League movie, anything and everything DC animated, anything and everything Spider-Man related (yes, I even like Spider-Man 3 although it wasn’t as good as the others), anything Star Wars related although I’d say Force Awakens is my favorite one, the 2017 Power Rangers movie, Serenity, The Lego movie and it’s sequel, Yugioh Bonds Beyond Time, Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest, all the Star Trek movies, the corny 90′s Mario movie, the Doctor Who movie, and Detective Pikachu.  Really, any of the Marvel and DC movies could probably make this list as well, I’m not super picky when it comes to movies.

Favorite TV shows is something I am a bit pickier about.  Doctor Who is obviously on the list, and I’ve watched and enjoyed most of the Marvel and DC live action stuff although I have a huge preference for the arrowverse and 70′s Wonder Woman.  Animated stuff tends to vary but a lot of the older stuff from the early and mid 90′s seems to be best for that.  Power Rangers is obviously on the list as well, along with The Walking Dead, Digimon, Avatar the Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Sherlock, Yugioh, Firefly, and off the top of my head that’s about it.  Everyone always assumes I’m huge into anime as well, but I’m not actually that into it.  Just not my thing.

Now video games has potential to be my longest list as it’s easily my favorite medium of story telling due to the interactivity.  First off, Nintendo and Playstation are my general consoles of choice.  Nothing against Xbox, I have a lot of respect for the brand but I can’t really afford to have three consoles (even though I wish I could) and Nintendo and Sony have more offerings for me personally.  I also do dabble on PC a bit, but I don’t really have a high end PC and it’s mostly just for Sims.  That being said, my favorite games and game series include Watch_Dogs, The Sims, Mario (mostly the “main series,” 3D games and 2D platformers but I do enjoy some of the off series stuff like Mario Kart and Mario Party as well) , Pokemon, Super Smash Brothers, The Force Unleashed series, Injustice, most of the Spider-Man games, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, most of the Batman games, Wario Ware, The Last of Us (still haven’t played the sequel yet.  Waiting to get it for cheap after seeing reviews), Days Gone, Control, Horizon Zero Dawn, No Man’s Sky, 51 Worldwide Classics for Switch, No Man’s Sky, the Tony Hawk Games (still haven’t played the new one yet), Time Splitters, The Movies, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Zombies Ate My Neighbhors, Kirby, The Legend of Korra game (the 3d one, not the really bad one for 3DS), Donkey Kong, Street Fighter 2, Punch Out, Metal Gear Solid 5 the Phantom Pain, Sonic Heroes, and the list could go on and on.

Can’t Sleep...

And I need somewhere to vent that won’t be seen by my family...

I’m feeling incredibly frustrated, angry, trapped, guilty, and selfish right now. To start, let me explain the current situation.

My sister and brother-in-law are both teachers. They have a 2-year-old daughter. Their school was smart enough to decide that reopening was a bad idea, BUT they still want the teachers to return to a full-time schedule. They told all the teachers with young children to ‘just put them in daycare’. Because THAT idea was even dumber than the first, my sister has asked me to come down and be their live-in babysitter for the foreseeable future instead. I made the mistake of agreeing.

And now every alarm bell is blaring in my head, because I really don’t want to do it. They live five hours away from me, which means I will have to abandon everything and essentially live out of a suitcase for the next several months, if not the whole school year. I cannot bring my pets(B-I-L is allergic to my cat, and my dog HATES their dog). They have offered to let me set up my sewing business in their house, which is already crammed full of all their own stuff, and I cannot even begin to explain how much stuff I would even need to bring in the first place(ie: most of it wouldn’t even fit in my car anyway).

The bright side? I live with my parents, who can take care of my pets for me, my sewing business is pretty much dead right now anyway thanks to current circumstances, and they offered to pay me(a little). But all I’m doing to my parents is the same thing as my sister is doing to me, and the school is doing to my sister. Dumping the problem on someone else and telling them to just 'figure it out'.

I’m angry at my sister for putting me in this position, because it tells me that she thinks NOTHING of my life and my obligations(I’m literally the ONLY person she even asked, probably because I’m the only one that doesn’t have a ‘real job/responsibilities’). Even worse, my BIL’s father LITERALLY LIVES DOWN THE STREET FROM THEM, but they can’t ask him because 1) he’s “disabled”(lazy), 2) he wanted to charge them $200-300 a week, 3) he literally walked out/quit and gave them til the very next day to find a replacement the last time he agreed to babysit(that's a whole different bag of worms, but let's just say the reason they live down there at all is because of his “promises”)

I'm also incredibly angry at the school/gov't and their whole bullshit idea of not only the schooling itself, but also the previous problem of paying their teachers such shitty wagers, that they both need to work full-time AND have a roommate just to cover their mortgage/bills. One could nitpick and argue that they should have picked a smaller house, or waited longer before having children, or any other number of stupid details, but all that does is take the blame away from the real problem, the one that everyone seems to ignore and just get mad at each other about instead of the people who are actually ruining everything.

Our whole society seems to be designed around protecting the billionaires and their lifestyle. We all KNOW they're greedy and selfish and backstabbing, and yet if one even SUGGESTS that they redistribute their wealth back to the masses they stole it from(because you LITERALLY do NOT become a billionaire by playing fair, taking care of your employees and following all the rules that are SUPPOSED to prevent that sort of exploitation but DON'T), everyone immediately comes to their defense, claiming it's their “right” to keep “their” money, they “earned it”, or other such various nonsense.

So now I'm trapped between the rock of abandoning my life and my chosen occupation/business, or the hard place of abandoning my sister and my niece to an uncaring and indifferent system. All because some billionaire decided the school system was “fine”, that the mindless BULLSHIT that we all learn in school(and subsequently forget five minutes after we graduate anyway) is more important that taking care of the people, and also deciding it was more important that they and their rich buddies can buy another bently, or summer home, or bank, or whatever CRAP those entitled miscreants waste their money on(most likely just hoarding it for the bragging rights) rather than giving it to the people who need it the most, which btw would VASTLY IMPROVE THE WHOLE FUCKING ECONOMIC SYSTEM.

But worst of all for me personally...is knowing there's not a damn thing I can do. I can make a thousand of these rants, make all the suggestions in the world, but because I don't already have money...it all means absolutely nothing. My choices are live out of a suitcase and under the thumb of my sister(and dump the responsibility of my pets on my parents)...or live with the guilt of letting my sister and her husband freak out every single day because they either have to wrangle their toddler whilst simultaneously teaching a class(which could possibly get them fired), find another baby-sitter who undoubtedly would demand WAY more money than what they offered me, or give in to the stupid school's stupid idea of sending her to daycare, where children spread germs like glitter in a craft room.

I know going down there is the right thing to do, and that's probably exactly why I agreed to it without thinking it through, but that doesn't mean I have to like it or think that it's still a horrible and stupid and unnecessary complication that shouldn't even be considered during a FUCKING PANDEMIC.

“So how are you celebrating Christmas?”

His fingers are tapping against the steering wheel, creating an incessant but uneven beat as soundtrack to their thus far uneventful three a.m. stakeout. Taylor Swift’s Speak Now is stuck halfway inside the car’s cd player and won’t play, to Jake’s dismay and Amy’s elation, so it’s silence or finger-drumming.

Obviously he chose finger-drumming. It’s only one of his many talents.

Index finger, middle finger, ring finger. Tap, tap, tap.

“Christmas?”

“Yeah, Christmas.” She leans back in her seat, fidgeting with the plastic lid to the bright red takeaway cup which a little over two hours ago contained substandard coffee from a sketchy coffee shop slash sandwich bar they happened to drive past. “You know, the holiday that’s coming up in three days.”

“My mom’s Jewish, Santiago.”

“I know. I just thought - what do you do for Christmas? Any traditions? I’ve just - I never asked.”

“It depends”, he huffs, continuing the rhythmic tapping. “I have lunch with my mom, usually. Charles invites me every year, but Christmas celebrations with the Boyles takes a mental strength few non-Boyles can generate, so I’ve only been once. I’ve celebrated with Gina a bunch, too.”

“Gina’s going on a cruise this year”, Amy informs him, like he wasn’t already aware. (Fine, okay, he wasn’t - he only remembered Gina telling him the celebrations wouldn’t be happening this year - but Santiago doesn’t need to know that.)

“I know, which is why I’m planning to watch Die Hard and eat mayo-nut spoonsies for the whole evening.” He swallows the last of his now-cold coffee, throwing the cup in the plastic bag Amy insisted they use for trash as to, quote unquote, prevent the inside of the vehicle looking like a cross-breed between a garbage dump and the apartment of someone who collects empty Cheetos-bags for a profession. “It’s going to be awesome.”

“It sounds pretty tragic, honestly.”

“Sure. Whatever.”

There’s a sudden movement at the edge of the street, a person walking towards the exact building they’re watching, and he dives for the binoculars while Amy leans almost over him to see better. Someone halts outside the door, nothing but their silhouette visible at this distance, and he’s about to suggest they leave a car to get a closer look when the nearby malfunctioning street light blinks to life and reveals what appears to be an older lady walking her dog.

“This is bullshit”, Amy groans, snatching the binoculars from his grip. “Handoff was supposed to go down twenty minutes ago.”

“You eager to catch a criminal or something?” He grins, knowing all too well that she is - it’s less than a month left of their bet and he’s currently leading with three arrests. “Because I, for one, am incredulously happy no criminal business is going down in our city. Shame on you, Santiago.”

She gives him a poisonous glare in response. “Ha. Ha.”

“I’m just saying, you better get ready for the worst date of your life. Get a sitter for your cats and whatnot.”

“I don’t have cats, Peralta.” She hands him the binoculars, reaching instead for her notepad and pen to make a note of the dog-walker, just to be sure. “I do have pet fish, though”, she mumbles with the lid in her mouth as she writes.

“Ouch. Lame.”

“Didn’t ask for your opinion.”

“Consider it charity”, he retorts, and she rolls her eyes before popping the lid back on the pen and balancing it between her thumb and index finger. For someone who fidgets so much Rosa once claimed he may as well have invented the word, it’s a relief to Jake to see that Amy does it too. Sometimes it’s down to nerves and anxiety, other times it’s simple boredom. It’s oddly endearing to him.

If her competitiveness hadn’t annoyed him half to death every other workshift, if she’d been slightly less of a hopeless besserwisser and know-it-all and he’d seen her in anything but a tolerant, friendly light, he might have described her as pretty in this moment. The semi-darkness makes her features appear all the more intriguing somehow, shadow framing her cheeks and illumination from street lamps outside giving her eyes a distinctive shine, but she’s also in the state he finds her the most likable. Not quite hyper-focused and not quite in an anxious frazzle, but rather somewhere in between. In control yet relaxed. Up for a joke yet making sure they’re on track with their assigned tasks. She purses her lips, continues twirling the pen, and he looks away before her sharp detective-eyes inevitably catch him staring.

“What about you?”

“Huh?” Amy flinches, dropping the pen. “What about what?”

“How do you celebrate Christmas? I never asked about your plans, or whatever.”

“I celebrate with all of my family”, she says with a smile. “Parents, brothers, their families, uncles and aunts. Lots of amazing food, lots of spending time together, lots of everything.”

He can’t help but grimace. “Sounds disgusting.”

She sticks her tongue out at him, ignoring the professionality she so desperately seeks now when they’re not being watched. “What do you have against Christmas anyway? Because you don’t have to be such a scrooge about it. People just want to be happy.”

“Not a big fan of big family traditions, if you recall.”

“Maybe one day you’ll have your own family with traditions. And, you know, not hate every single joyous occasion.”

Jake snorts, adjusting the straps of his hoodie. “I doubt that.”

“Whatever. I was trying to be nice.”

“I know.”

They both go silent, and he has half a mind to abandon his current clenching and unclenching of his fists to start tapping his fingers against the steering wheel once again before his phone lights up with a text message to inform him the release team is almost there and they’re allowed to finish their shift.

Twenty minutes later they’re back outside the precinct, ready to get in their own cars and drive home for the night. He’s just about to open the car door when he hears her shout his name.

“Yeah?” She jogs up to him, putting a hand on his shoulder to make him turn around.

“You know - you could celebrate with my family - if you’d want to? No one should be alone on Christmas”, she breathes, and she’s so close and there’s such a genuinity to the way she says it that for a split second, he considers taking her up on the offer.

It’s too much, though. He’s never met a single member of her family before, detests feeling like an intruder, considers Die Hard and mayo-nut spoonsies a near ideal Christmas tradition anyway.

“Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll be fine.”

“Okay”, she shrugs, backing. “Well, I hope you have a good Christmas anyway, Peralta.”

Snowflakes begin to fall right as she’s walking away, white stars getting caught in the tips of her hair, making it glitter.

“Merry Christmas, Santiago”, he whispers, but she’s too far away to hear.

Top 5 best pets (breeds/species) you’ve cared for, and alternatively, the top 5 worst you’ve cared for

Oh, can I do both?? I’m doing both because I like to ramble too much, sorry!

Best first!

1) Ball pythons! I’m extremely biased because Charis is so fucking chill, but I love ball pythons because they’re just so chill and I love their size and weight and color. I wish she would try more foods, but we’re working on that!

2) Cats! I haven’t met a cat I’ve disliked so far, I don’t think, but I’ve been pretty lucky with the cats I’ve taken care of too. No major grumpy asshole cats yet!

3) Rats! I really love rattos, even though they’re a bit higher energy than I can always deal with (though that’s partly bc we have girls). But they’re very fun to feed, fun to do enrichment for, and they’re just so personable. Little naked tail puppies. Their only drawback at all is their damn lifespan (2-4 years).

4) Leopard geckos! Okay, so my experience is pretty limited, but I adored having the three rescue girls at my place! I’d love to have a leo sometime, but I’ll have to wait and see if it happens or even if it can - I’m allergic to mealworms and I don’t know how much it extends to other insects at this point.

5) Rabbits! Again, experience is fairly limited - mostly to a few domestic rabbits we had at Wildside. But I really wish I could’ve brought one of those buns home, and I really want to get a bun (or a couple) in the future! Soft & cute vegan dogs. ♥

Top worst because rambling!

1) Goats. Goats are nice and all, but they are not a favorite of mine, and it makes the work involved with them that much more arduous. My aunt had a herd of like 16 at one point & I was her animal sitter (for the goats + 5 cats + 2 dogs). I hated having to get up early to do chores before getting to class, and the yard was always gross & muddy and it was just a big pain, tbh.

2) Ferrets. My friend’s ferret was a sweetheart & I loved him! He was also an exception as he was fairly calm for a ferret & easy to get along with. Most ferrets are just so hyper & off-the-wall and it’s just too much for me.

3) Big Drooly Dogs (ex: Saint Bernards). A different aunt had a couple of these guys who I also petsat for and they were absolute sweethearts! But...I can’t do it. The hair. The DROOL. The sheer size. I like big dogs in short doses, but mostly I just couldn’t handle the drool. I wore sandals full time in her house because I got so squicked out by stepping in wet spots.

4) Parrots...sadly. :( I love birds and I desperately love the idea of caring for parrot - the height of enrichment & food! But I can’t handle them for the most part. I can’t do the noise, and I don’t have the energy & I’m not home enough to properly care for most parrots. I think I could potentially do budgies or a cockatiel or two? But I honestly don’t know for sure, and it would be something I’d have to think very very hard about before trying. I plan to try getting into volunteering & helping out a parrot rescue in my area though, so at least I could get some more exposure, and maybe try fostering, and also make food for them! So we’ll see. But it’s a pretty heavy maybe-leaning-towards-no. (Not to mention the risk of all the cats.)

5) Turtles. Okay, so I haven’t exactly had a turtle yet. But I’m going to end up with one (a RES), with any luck, from bf’s parents. From everything I’ve read, I don’t think they’re really a great pet, and particularly not for me. But I’d much rather have this turt for the rest of his life than his current situation, so we’re doing it! But I hate water changes, and that’s gonna be a major thing with him. Not terribly looking forward to that part, but I do look forward to getting him into a better home, with some proper enrichment and seeing what I can do with his diet!

Do Less

I have been reading KEEPING QUIET by Pablo Neruda in some of my classes lately. It was read on an episode of ON BEING with Krista Tippet, and I immediately had to pause the podcast so that when I parked I could look up the poem and read it. Every time I read this poem, different parts of it come to life for me. That’s what’s so wonderful about writing: you, the reader, get to take what works for you and leave the rest. 

Currently, the second to last paragraph is the one that is speaking volumes to me time and time again.

I have been working in some form of care-providing field for over two decades now. I started in elementary school as a mother’s helper, which moved into babysitting and eventually being a nanny for 8 years. During all of that I also have been a manager, an assistant, a bill payer, a book keeper, a dog walker, a pet sitter, an actress, worked in customer service, worked as a bartender…and for the last 5 years I have spent everyday holding space for others as a yoga instructor.

Part of my insane work ethic and juggling of multiple jobs at once has been out of necessity: rent/bills/student debt...the usual. But I must admit that there is this other part of me that has this overwhelming fear that if I don’t work the world will come crashing down around me and I will die.

Sounds dramatic. And it’s yet, it’s my truth. 

All I do is talk with clients and students about self care, about how important it is to make time for themselves, to rest, to go to yoga, to put themselves first. And as I sit there watching them flow, I think to myself “How lucky they are to be able to take a yoga class...I wish I could take a yoga class.” Because my truth is that I put them, I put my job, I put income before myself. 

Living this way for over a decade, has for sure caused various burn outs: emotional breakdowns, physical breakdowns, all the typical signs of somebody that needs to take care of themselves. Body pain, depression, migraines, panic attacks...you know, the stuff most of us live with pretty regularly. And even with those experiences, even with the knowledge of the importance of self care,  I've always kept going because my worth, to myself, has been SO intrinsically tied up to how much I do in a day. 

We live in a culture that glorifies the grind, that encourages hustling, that celebrates the fact that we are all doing too many things at once, not so slowly destroying ourselves and the world around us at the same time.

And I’ve had enough.

I don’t want to wake up exhausted every day, I don’t want to live in a world where people feel like they need an IV drip of coffee all day, I don’t want to be a mom that shoves a phone in her kids face or has a phone in her face when her child is asking for attention because I’m too burnt out to even care for the one who needs me most, I don’t want to be a wife that is too tired to connect to her husband, I don't want to wake up in my 60s and feel like my whole life was a blur. I found myself on Sunday nights wondering what happened (not just about GOT, but like in general), and gritting my teeth to get to Saturday again.

That’s no way to live. 

And that is what this poem is speaking to me: TO DO LESS. That life is not about how much you do, but it’s about HOW YOU LIVE! 

To take my dog on a long walk without my phone. To read a book on the couch, until my eyes get heavy and I take a spontaneous cat nap. To start blogging!  To do yoga! OMG TO DO YOGA! You guys: I’m an instructor and for the first time in TWO YEARS I just took TWO yoga classes in ONE week! I am so busy training people and driving around LA that I don’t even have a personal practice. And that’s embarrassing.

When I decided to start this blog I asked for post ideas: and one that brought up a lot of shame for me was: “How you find time for your practice in your day.”

Well, I don’t.

Or rather, I didn’t. But this week three clients are out of town, and I’ve been reading that poem over and over. 

That poem came to me last week after I started actively asking the universe to allow me to do less.

I have found that when I truly need or want something and I am too afraid to make the first move, eventually, the universe gives me a little shove. A few weeks ago, a morning class of mine got moved. And with that one move, I took a few steps that were difficult and scary for me because they required me to put myself first and to vocalize it: to my husband, to my mom, and to a client. 

But now... two days a week I can sleep past 5:30am!!! One day a week, I do not drive the over 20 miles one way into LA at all! 

I am doing less...and that is allowing me to do more!

But not more for the sake of doing more. But, because I prioritized myself, I have more energy. More energy to cook, to get stuff done around the house, to be efficient, present, and joyful.  I get to BE more, and learn and explore what that brings up for me. Which, at times, is a lot: I absolutely have to talk myself off a ledge sometimes when I don’t have a completely full calendar for the day. I’ll sit there and think what I can schedule in. And then, I stop myself. DO LESS! These two days a week I am not up at 5:30am: I’m only two weeks into it, and so it’s going to take me some time to embrace the space! But I’m trying!

Living life is about BEING yourself, and loving yourself, and living a life that feels good. Not a life that flies by that you were too busy hustling to enjoy and appreciate. 

America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and yet we have the HIGHEST rate of unhappiness. Yoga has also BLOWN up in the Western world over the last decade in ways that I won’t even begin to bore you with. But it’s exploding. And do you know why? Because whether you’re taking a yoga sculpt class, a kundalini class, yoga and spin, restorative yoga, yoga with wine, yoga in a sauna...YOGA IS WHEN YOU GET TO JUST BE. You’re not on your phone, you’re not working, you’re not talking...YOU ARE JUST BEING YOU. You’re listening to your body, you’re honoring yourself, you’re breathing consciously. AND THAT FEELS GOOD. 

IT FEELS GOOD TO JUST BE. 

In a country where we are inundated with success being linked to an image of extreme material possessions, where we work without boundaries because our cellphones have brought our bosses into our bedroom, where we are being fed food that’s fast and inflames our organs so much that we walk with aches in a fog so thick we can’t even make eye contact with the person in front of us yoga is spreading. Yoga is spreading because that image of success we are force-fed on plastic spoons that destroy our planet covered in GMO’s, is giving us the ability to breathe over the noise. To see through the fog. To redefine our idea of success.

Success is not about having, it’s not about doing. It’s about being. 

So I’m going to take the towels out of the laundry, walk Dusty (my really cute pug), and do a little less before my evening classes.

I would love to know what you don’t have time for that you wish you did have time for, and why. 

Sometimes, when we can write out what we want and what’s stopping us: it’s easier to see that it’s really US standing in our own way of feeling good. 

Say it with me: My worth is not dependent on how much I do, how much I make, if I have initials after my name. My worth was given to me the moment I was born. I deserve to feel good and to live a life that feels good. 

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: YOU ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH. 

I need to preface this with saying that I occasionally work as a dog sitter. Yesterday, I took this dog out on a walk (on-leash) and an off-leash dog ran up and attacked her. She had a small cut around her eye that I cleaned immediately. She also bit me when I tried to break up the fight. The owner is claiming this is my fault as I was instructed to keep her away from other dogs (which I tried my best to do, but is difficult when dogs run up!) He’s hung up on me mid-sentence several times (1/2)

(dog sitter) when I explained what happened. Any advice for dealing with clients who are really dramatic and also jerks? I feel like I’m 3 seconds away from having a breakdown. (2/2)

This is such a scary situation to have happen to you, regardless of whether it’s your actual dog or not! It sounds like you handled the situation as best you could, you can’t be held accountable for every single other dog out there in the world. The client is not thinking rationally about this.

That said, people don’t think rationally when it comes to their pets. I dog-sit for a friend of mine who knows that even though I don’t currently have dogs of my own, I grew up with two different dogs when I was living with my parents. I’ve also dog sat for her seven different times, and every single time I watch her dog for even a day, she leaves me a five page long manuscript and then micromanages me while she’s away from home through texts! She is completely out of control and cannot fathom the idea of her dog being okay without her. Which it is!

I’ve also cat-sat for people who have specific ways of feeding their cats that I as a cat owner don’t like (for example, microwaving cat food), it’s all part of the territory. As a dog walker or pet sitter, you’re entering into a world of concerned clientele. They are giving you temporary guardianship of their beloved pets, and it’s natural that they’re not going to be on high alert about everything. 

I would stop calling this client and let him go. It’s unfortunate that it had to end this way, but you know that you did nothing wrong, that’s what’s important. He’s too traumatized to see sense, and trying to talk to him about it is only going to make the situation worse. 

My general advice is this: if you really like this job, then you’re going to need to accept that you’re not always going to agree with people about the ways that they take care of their pets. There isn’t one right way to do it (although there are many wrong ways), and you’re only responsible for doing the best you possibly can in their stead. If the animal has fun with you and forgets that they’ve been sitting in an empty house while their owner is away, then you’ve done your job! If clients get too complicated or overprotective, drop them and move on.

Ugly – Brian's pet Barghest. The happiest little abomination you will ever meet. She is a sweet happy girl who just wants to run and chase things and drag them down to Hell. Normally she takes the form of a shadowy dog with a skull face and fiery red eyes. But as also been known to take the form of a bloody raven, a white cat with a torn ear, or just a cloud of dark fog. He loves her – and will pull a John Wick if she is harmed.

'Rodriguez' – Stupid lesser demon that reports to Brian in Vera's crime syndicate. He swears that this idiot getting assigned to him is Vera's way of revenge. If something goes wrong, Brian blames Rodriguez first and foremost. ... and he's usually right. Damien apparently thinks he's funny – meanwhile Brian will swear up and down that he hates him. He's loud, vulgar, clumsy, and a cocky asshole that can't back up half the shit he says. Brian usually makes him do all the bitch work he doesn't want to do. All that said Brian will still go out drinking with him after a job. Which usually results in Brian telling him to shut up and drink. And Rodriguez proceeds to not listen.

Deegan ‘Dee’ Hildebrandt – The competent one in Brian's underlings. He's a hedonistic werewolf that parties almost as hard as he works. Chain smokes near constantly and gets violent if he's lacking a nicotine fix. His greatest claim to fame is taking out an entire vampire gang when he was kidnapped and they defused to give him his cigs back. Otherwise this guy takes on an older brother attidue and is very chill and laid back. He tends to annoy Brian because he's a serial fence sitter and professional devils advocate.

Vicktor Kisaragi – A mortician and  underground 'doctor' that hails from a family of Russian and Japanese descent. The closest thing Brian has to a doctor and the only one Brian trusts aside from Damien and Vera that he trusts to patch him up in the event that he can't. And the ONLY one that he'll permit to do full on surgery on him. Because the man doesn't ask questions. The doctor is a lethargic, snarky man who seems to have one setting emotionally – disturbingly calm but vaguely cheerful. He likes his 'dates' (aka the bodies he does autopsies on) – he does research on paranatural creatures. He also has a very dangerous collection of cursed objects that he studies. His profession has cost him however. - He is currently possessed by an evil cat spirit that morphs and shifts parts of his body. Sometimes mid surgery he'll have to stop because his hands have turned into paws.    

'The Twins' - Kaori and Kaine Izumi – a pair of twin vampires that work under Vicktor. Or at the very least Brian assumes this is the case as the pair of young teens seem to always be around. They look no older than 17 – but have likely been alive much longer.  Kaori – normally going as 'Knave' is  the troublemaker of the duo and has telekinetic powers. She's the more outgoing one and the one that generally tends to pester Brian in the strangest of places. Her brother Kaine is quieter and more reserved. Brian trusts him far less due to his telepathic powers that tend to border on psychic. They are generally helping Vicktor with various tasks – mainly bringing the doctor corpses of slain monsters.  

'Kasha' – If Brian needs something electronic done, or needs info to fill the gaps in his or Vera's knowledge then Kasha is the one he calls. He doesn't know the identity of this person although he's seen them in person he THINKS once or twice. Kasha is a very adept hacker and information broker who hasn't led him astray yet... although Brian doesn't trust anyone on the best of days let alone someone he's never really met. Although they sometimes swap late night memes via text.

When it's time to move into your new house, whether it's across town or across the country, your moving day checklist includes packing up your four-legged family members. And while moving with pets is a stressful time for you...it's undoubtedly just as stressful for your pets.

Here are some tips to make moving into your new home as stress-free as possible for everyone in your family especially your pets!

First of all, start by looking at the move from your pet's point of view. Their current home is more than their home; it's their territory. Dogs tend to adjust much more easily to moves than cats. That's because new puppy owners are encouraged to socialize their puppy to get him used to new people, new smells and other dogs. So, from the time they're young, dogs are out and about.

For both cats and dogs, sticking to the routine after the move is very important. Maintaining the same schedule for treats, grooming and bedtime will help your pet acclimate even more quickly. And walking your dog at the same time each day will also help him transition into his new home.

Before The Move: Preparing Your Pets

Consider taking your dog to your new neighborhood for walks before you move in. Walk by your new house and let your dog familiarize himself with the scents of the neighborhood. Go inside the new house if possible. Or try to bring something from the new house to your dog so he can familiarize himself with its unique smell.

While you're packing, try not to isolate your dog in a dog crate. Instead, include him while you pack and move boxes, allowing him to investigate the activity. If your dog is crated or isolated in a room by himself while the rest of the family packs and prepares to move, he'll likely feel nervous which could lead to stress-related behaviors such as hyperactivity, jumping or barking.

It's Moving Day: What Should I Do with My Pets?

One option is to assign a responsible family member to be the dedicated dog sitter (choose someone who won't be responsible for packing or moving on moving day). But it might be less stressful for your family and your dog if you have a dog-loving friend watch your dog for the day.

Planning for A Long-Distance Move with Your Pets

If your move is long-distance, your pets will need to be crate-trained well before your move. On the day of your move, your pets should be wearing collars including up-to-date rabies tags and your new address and phone number.

If you're driving, plan stops along the way to ensure you'll find pet friendly hotels. If your trip involves air travel, be sure to ask the airline about their pet travel requirements. You'll need to keep a copy of your pet's veterinarian records in your carry-on luggage.

How Dogs Adjust to a New Home

Your dog will most likely want a VIP tour of his new home. Once the movers have left and you and your dog have the house to yourself, let him make the rounds inside and outside. Walk him on a leash during this initial introduction so he feels safe and secure by your side. The sooner he gets used to the new smells of his new environment, the sooner he'll feel at home.

Because a dog needs space and room to exercise, your dog might take more time to adjust if you're moving from a larger house to a smaller house or apartment. But just like cats, dogs will appreciate getting back to the established routine as soon as possible. Taking walks at your usual time and sticking to the same route for several days will help your dog adjust.

If possible, allow yourself a few extra days to spend at home with your pet after the move and before returning to work. During this period of adjustment, you can begin to stay away from home for short periods of time to get your pets used to being alone in their new space. Do not leave your dog unattended outside during this adjustment period. Dogs have been known to jump fences in an attempt to return to their old, familiar territory.

Veterinarian Advice and Moving with Your Pets

If you've moved a long distance, now is the perfect time to ask your new neighbors to recommend a new veterinarian for your pets. Schedule a "get to know you" visit for your pets as soon as possible so you have a vet in the event of a veterinary emergency.

Just like people, every pet is unique and has a personality all their own. Because you know your pet better than anyone, you can probably predict how smoothly the transition will go. If you know that your pet is extremely skittish, talk to your veterinarian well beforehand about your concerns. He or she can recommend medication to help sedate your pet during this stressful time, if it's absolutely necessary.
