hey everyone, really didn't wanna have to do this but everything is so expensive these days and i'm struggling and my laptop is now broken and needs fixing. i finally created a ko-fi so if you can donate anything it'd really be appreciated. it's gonna cost £450 to fix so that's my goal i guess but even like half of that would be a huge help. and even sending just $1/£1/€1 my way could help if enough people contribute. (edit: unfortunately there have been transaction fees from paypal and £1 ends up being £0.67 so i've decided to change the ko-fi tip to £2 i hope that's okay)
ko-fi
goal: £173/£450
signal boosts would also be much appreciated <3

ATLA Overall Character Stats
One thing I have been wondering for a while is how many lines of dialogue each character has in ATLA. I recently figured out an easy way to calculate it, so here are the stats for the entire series. You can look at the stats for Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3 at those links.
There are 9985 total lines of dialogue in the series. They are divided up as follows:
Aang 1796 lines, 17.99% of total lines Sokka 1635 lines, 16.37% Katara 1433 lines, 14.35%(this increases to 1439 lines and 14.81% when you include "Young Katara") Zuko 776 lines, 7.77% (this increases to 809 lines and 8.10% when you include "Young Zuko) Toph 508 lines, 5.09% Iroh 337 lines, 3.38% Azula 211 lines, 2.11%(this increases to 232 lines and 2.32% when you include "Young Azula") Jet 134 lines, 1.34% Suki 114 lines, 1.14% Zhao 107 lines, 1.07% Mai 82 lines, 0.82%(this increases to 83 lines and 0.83% when you include "Young Mai") Hakoda 77 lines, 0.77% Roku 67 lines, 0.67% Ty Lee 64 lines, 0.64%(this increases to 66 lines and 0.66% when you include "Young Ty Lee) Bumi 55 lines, 0.55% Ozai 55 lines, 0.55% Yue 53 lines, 0.53% Hama 49 lines, 0.49% Long Feng 46 lines, 0.46% Piandao 43 lines, 0.430645969% Mechanist 42, 0.420630946% Kuei 40, 0.400600901% Bato 38, 0.380570856% Pathik 38, 0.380570856% Pakku 37, 0.370555834% Teo 35, 0.350525789% Chong 33, 0330495744% Warden of Boiling Rock 33, 0.330495744% Young Zuko 33, 0.330495744% Jeong Jeong 32, 0.320480721%

Population Growth Rate Map of Japan, South Korea & Taiwan
by u/BerryBlue_BlueBerry
Some countries in East Asia are having population growth rates lowering rapidly. The most severe one being Japan, which already have their total population declining since 2010. Taiwan & South Korea are also estimated to join the decline trend in 2022 and 2024. To dig in further, I gathered pop data & made this map to show the population increasing & declining areas within these 3 countries.
10 Highest Yearly Population Growth:
(KR) Sejong: +13.27%
(KR) Jeju: +2.17%
(TW) Taoyuan: +1.37%
(KR) Gyeonggi: +1.25%
(TW) Kinmen: +1.22%
(TW) Lianjiang: +1.01%
(KR) Chungnam: +0.87%
(TW) Hsinchu (County): +0.69%
(TW) Hsinchu (City): +0.67%
(JP) Tokyo: +0.61%
10 Lowest Yearly Population Growth:
(JP) Akita: -1.04% (edit : Akita should be the color between -1% ~ -5% in the map, sorry for my coloring mistake )
(JP) Aomori: -0.87%
(JP) Kochi: -0.77%
(JP) Wakayama: -0.77%
(JP) Iwate: -0.76%
(JP) Yamagata: -0.76%

thank you, timothy zahn for, once again, coming through on facts i need.
that means that it takes 3 min, 42 seconds (222 seconds) to go either 8 light-years or 22 light-years with the class 2 hyperdrive of the imperial i-class star destroyer, aka:
1 light-year in 28 seconds (rounded up from 27.75) OR 10 seconds, which gives ridiculous numbers that i'm throwing right out because it means that tatooine to coruscant would be just under an hour and it is not.
roughly 130 ly/hour (129.7)
40 parsec/hour (0.67 parsecs/minute)
and, using my favourite new toy, the hyperspace pathfinder (which itself goes with 1 parsec per 72.31 minutes, giving some looong travel times), that means, using a class 2 hyperdrive:
tatooine to coruscant is 117.29 parsecs aka 382.4 ly, so it would take about 3 hours. using the class 1.8-rated hyperdrive that the royal naboo ship has, it would be just a smidge faster.
coruscant to naboo: 96.88 parsecs, roughly 2 1/2 hours. this trip, with a class 4 hyperdrive such as the one on the transport ship padmé and anakin took in episode ii, would take nearly 9 3/4 hours.
if class 2 is 130ly/hour and 40 parsec/hour and each class of hyperdrive takes double the time as its predecessor/half the time of its successor, then:
class 1 would be 260 ly & 80 p/hour
class 3 would be 65 ly & 20p/hour
class 4 would be 32.5 ly & 10p/hour
&tc
coruscant to kamino would be divided into jumps and take obi-wan, in the delta-7 that needs to have a class 1 to be able to follow the slave 1 so closely, a bit over one and a half hours to get to rishi (128.93 parsecs), another jump from rishi to the rishi maze (???), and then another 18 minutes or so to get to kamino (those 12 parsecs past the rishi maze).
of course, this is all rough. and hyperdrives could scale logarithmically (like they do in heir to the empire) and that is math i have no idea how to do. math is not my forté.

Tara Lewis Fanfic Stats
It's incredibly frustrating to see how this fandom treats Tara as an afterthought, if they think about her at all. I wanted to take a look at the stats on AO3 (bc I'm a nerd). [See this post for all CM fanfic stats]
Tara Lewis was in nearly 100 episodes (about 1/3 of all eps), but she's so largely under-represented in CM fanfiction. Furthermore, she is the ONLY canonically queer character in Criminal Minds' SIXTEEN seasons and yet, there are very few fanfics exploring her queer identity.
Overall Stats:
Tumblr media
Character Tag: 1187 total
Out of 36k+ fanfics on AO3 Tara is only tagged in 3% of all fics. This includes any fic where she's been tagged as a character -- keep in mind, in many of those fics she's only featured in the background.
Tara doesn't even make the Top 10 most popular characters in the CM fandom, despite being in six seasons of the show.
Actually, on a list of all 18 Main Characters (profilers) from the total run of the show, Tara lands at #13. That's a lower ranking than five other characters who were in far fewer episodes.
Relationship Tag: 242 total
Out of the 1187 fics with Tara, she's only listed in the relationship category in 242 of those. Which is a measly, 0.67% of all CM fanfiction. Our ONE canonically queer character doesn't even make up 1% of ship fics in this fandom. (Reminder, this stat also includes any fic where her relationship is background/minor)
Tara Lewis in Femslash:
Tumblr media
Femslash only makes up for 12% of all CM fics. In the femslash category, Tara is tagged in a relationship in 242 fics. That's about 5% of the total CM femslash posted to AO3.
To put that in a bit of perspective, there are nearly TEN times more Jemily fics (2376) than there are of Tara in ANY queer pairing.
Tara's top 3 relationship tags: Tara/Emily (139 fics), Tara/JJ (27 fics), Tara/Reader (24 fics)
Tara's canon relationship with Rebecca Wilson is only featured as a main ship in FIVE fics. Including background Tara/Rebecca, there are only 12 fics with this pair
In Conclusion:
I have watched people beg for a canonically queer character FOR YEEAAARRRSSS in this fandom. After Kirsten revealed Emily was originally supposed to be sapphic in a 2015 interview, the fandom pleaded for it to be addressed in canon. Of course, that never happened.
What we got instead was a queer confirmed Tara Lewis and after all the years of begging for a queer main -- the fandom went silent.
Why? I think it's mostly because Tara is a queer Black woman (and one of only four POC who have been main characters in eighteen years of this show). Racism and misogyny have run rampant in this fandom for as long as I can remember, so it shouldn't have been much of a surprise when everyone saying 'Give us a canon queer character!' actually meant 'give us a white queer'.
I'm never gonna shut up about HOW IMPORTANT it was for Tara to be our first queer character. I only hope that people start to understand why this representation matters and why it's worth writing and exploring Tara more in fanfiction.

[ID: A blue and white donation prompt banner that reads: "Can You Chip In? Dear Patron: Please don't scroll past this. The Internet Archive is growing rapidly, and we need your help. As an independent nonprofit, we build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. Instead, we're powered by online donations averaging about $17. We'd be deeply grateful if you'd join the one in a thousand users that support us financially.
We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Access to knowledge is more important than ever—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in." There is a box next to the banner with donation options ranging from $1, $17, and $100, with the last option being a custom amount, and two checkboxes below that say "I will generously add $0.67 to cover fees" and "Make this monthly". End ID]
Hey, Archive of Our Own fans!
Are you looking for more ways to help preserve media? Want to make sure reading is accessible to everyone without ads or restrictions?
Then please, please consider donating to the Internet Archive!
Each year, Archive of Our Own far surpasses their donation goal for their fanfiction hosting archive-- let's see if we can't meet or beat that for the original archive, that preserves media that would otherwise be lost, is an open free and accessible online library, and is an absolutely invaluable resource if you are a fan of literally any old media; so many books are completely out of print for scifi series such as Quantum Leap, Star Trek DS9, Babylon 5, etc, and physical copies are sold for hair-raising prices ($100-$500+), and digital copies available to purchase are extremely few and far between.
Some of the Star Trek books have been digitalized as ebooks by Amazon, but none of the Quantum Leap books exist anywhere online as purchasable ebooks, and the only place you can find them is on ebay (for various price points from reasonable to absolutely hilariously outrageous), but they are not available in any accessible format...
Until the Web Archive digitalized them for their Open Library!
Not all of them are available on the web archive yet-- physical copies are donated to the archive and have to be digitalized there, but many are already available that you would otherwise have to shell out $100 or more to scalpers and resellers on ebay, while the original creators never see a cent of the profit (the books originally sold for $6.99 when they were released)
Not only does the Internet Archive preserve books that are decades out of print, but also documentaries, ancient video games and software, live music, and what most people know: The Wayback Machine! The magical tool that preserves defunct or dead websites (or even just to show original posts or articles before they were edited or deleted) for future reference and preservation !
And the web archive is not just for fandom purposes-- live news broadcasts, radio plays, NASA images, public domain audio books for accessibility, movies, podcasts, traditional art backups, and more!~
Do you have old family videos and photos? You can upload them to the archive!
Do you have a family recipe book from your great grandmother? You can upload it to the archive!
Do you like to craft and make crochet or knitting tutorials or patterns? You can upload them to the archive!
So, if you love to read, and you love media preservation, please consider donating if you are able (This is not only available during a set time, they accept donations year round if you want to wait til payday!) and please reblog to signal boost this!

hii would you be kind enough to share how you edit your gameplay posts? :) also stupid question… what did you mean by keyboard shortcuts? is it like Ctrl C & Ctrl V thing??? or am I just dumb
ok so long post but here is how i edit! With visuals, some of my settings, and other tips
This may seem like a really long process at first glance but the shortcuts really cut down half the time.
I edit in rows of my screenshots, typically grouping them by post or multiple small posts.
Tumblr media
The first thing I do is crop. My crop ratios for my posts are 7:5 for landscape and 4:4.5 for portraits.
The next thing I do is run topaz clean. I could set up a keyboard shortcut for topaz clean but I'd have to pick my preset anyways. Now for the rest of the photos I have open, I can use my most recent filter with Ctrl+Alt+F, instead of opening topaz clean and the preset every time. It will automatically use the last topaz clean preset instead.
Here are my topaz clean settings. Shout-out to the other simblrs' topaz clean settings I stared at to understand and find a starting point of what I should use for sims screenshots (mostly @sojutrait <3)
Tumblr media
Next is my adjustment layers. I typically use brightness, exposure, and saturation. There isn't a set formula for it but here's my general method. I don't use shortcuts for adjustment layers because I'll being selecting my settings in the same space anyways.
if the screenshot isn't that bright from the get-go I'll use brightness first. If it is well lit, I will only use exposure.
I use exposure rather than brightness to brighten images and to improve highlights, add a glow-y effect, add vibrancy, and also add a little saturation.
It's pretty easy for me to tell what is too much but I suggest picking how much you want and doing a little less. The amount varies a lot per image (+0.11-0.67)
I only use a little saturation (+1-8) since I already get a lot from my gshade. Or I just don't use it
If a screenshot starts off too saturated I'll adjust the curve or lower the contrast a tiny bit instead of lowering saturation.
Then I resize the image to 1000px using the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+I. I don't resize the portrait crops because they are already at about 900px from the crop anyways. The purpose of resizing is so tumblr does not slightly blur the preview images as it does with pictures of a large size. You don't need to click on the field for width it will automatically select it. Just enter your amount and press enter.
Tumblr media
If I am adding in a speech bubble, psd, notif, etc. I will do it AFTER I resize. Placing it on the smaller image will keep it sharper. I like to put my psds and such underneath my adjustment layers but if they are too overexposed I'll put them at the top and make a clipping layer (left click on the layer for the drop-down) for the overlay to match the brightness of the image.
Next part is important for my process. Before I move on to the next image in the row I will make sure I select the background layer (it makes sense later)
Tumblr media
I don't save the image at this point!
I repeat the process for the rest of the images that I've opened and then I go back to the first image.
Tumblr media
This time I use the smart sharpen filter. Here's my presets settings. I won't use smart sharpen on zoomed out exterior shots sometimes because it makes it a little crunchy. I made sure I selected the background layer before so the smart sharpen goes on the actual image and not any of the adjustment/overlay layers.
Tumblr media
Then I save as with Ctrl+Alt+S. I'll talk about saving more further down and why I don't use quicksave.
So now I can just quickly go through every image opened using Ctrl+Alt+F (filter) and then Ctrl+Alt+S (save as). The reason I do it this way is so I can use the recent filter shortcut instead of switching back and forth between filters for every image. Again you could make a shortcut for your filters, but you will then have the filter's settings open every time. It also gives me a chance to take another look at the edits and see if there is anything I want to change after seeing it again.
After that I'll choose close all, select a new row of images, and repeat the process.
Other info
Why save as and not quick save? If you don't know, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to quick export as png. I don't use this because it doesn't follow the "save as to original folder" setting being toggled off. So you'll have to select the folder you want to save to everytime.
So I toggle off the "save as to original folder" and use the save as shortcut. After your first save to the folder you want, it will remember the folder you just saved to and that you saved as a png. Then you can just quickly press enter twice through the save as and png format option prompts. The original folder setting is in file handling (where to find file handling is under the next question)
Tumblr media
Making a keyboard shortcut? You can view all shortcuts by menu and insert your own shortcuts for ones that don't have one or for preference. Just make sure you don't overwrite another shortcut you care about. You can also just see the shortcuts displayed in the drop-down menus next to the option.

Something My Sibling Pointed Out
When peeps are talking about the Monty Hall problem, they always discuss the theory but never show practical results outside of certain circles. This has lead many to denying the conclusion the math community reached.
For the uninitiated, the Monty Hall problem is usually described as:
You're on a game show, and they present you with three doors. Behind one door is a Brand New Car, and the other two doors have a goat each. If you pick the car, you get to keep it.
You make a choice, but before they reveal what you picked, they open one of the Other two doors to reveal a goat. They ask if you want to change your pick.
Should you change?
Our common perception of the problem is that we still have the same chance of winning if we change or not, 1/3, but that's not true!
You actually have better odds if you do change. 1/3 chance to win without changing vs a 2/3 chance if you do. It's counter-intuitive, and more statistics-minded peeps have gone into great detail about why that is.
But instead of theory, I present to you a practical proof:
I made a program to run through the Monty Hall scenario some large number of times (Half a million in this case). It does this twice - once without swapping its initial choice, and again with swapping its initial choice after having the goat revealed. Each iteration it totally re-randomizes the state, and the choices / reveals are randomized.
Here are the results:
Tumblr media
This is a boring console app, but here you can see that it prints out the Win to Total runs ratios followed by the calculated win% (as a fractional number)
Without swapping its choice, it won approximately 1/3 of the time (0.33) BUT when it did swap, it won 2/3 of the time (0.67)
This continues no matter how many runs I add. Even cranked up to 100 million runs, the pattern persists.
All that to say: the pattern definitely exists! It's unintuitive, but practically speaking we can prove that it's true that swapping your choice after having the goat revealed gives you better odds. Understanding the underlying statistical reasons is a whole other story

Do Not Participate in Tapas Inksgiving
Their practices and policies are more akin to micro-transactions in video games, and use the same deceptive pricing structure. But it's even worse because they use the veil of "supporting artists" to get you to overlook the problems. They turn around and weaponize that as "you'll hurt the artists" if you criticize the company.
Several years ago, I tracked down and calculated exactly what Tapas is getting and how much artists are getting and it's worse than I realized. Nothing has changed since then, despite promises to change the language around Ink.
This started in November 2019 and the conversation on the forums lasted until April of the following year. And it's still a problem.
Here are the prices you pay when you buy Ink:
Tumblr media
What I found extremely strange was the "bonus" values. Why is it 4000 + 1000 and not just 5000 for $5? Because that's part of the deceptive, predatory micro transaction behavior. You'd be able to easily figure out 5000 ink for $5 is 10 ink for every penny. But it also shows their hand a bit. If you take away the "bonus" ink, the math becomes a lot easier. It's 800 ink for every $1, or 8 per penny.
Seeing that, I plugged in all the values into a spreadsheet:
Tumblr media
Purchase amounts were rounded up by 1 penny make the math a little easier.
Now, what's that actual value? Well, I did a bit of an experiment. I created a burner account, purchased $2 worth of ink (the 1600 tier) and sent it to my main account. What arrived was valued at $1.33 before any fees were taken out. Well, that's strange. If I paid $2, and there's fees taken by Tapas at the end, shouldn't it still be $2? Where'd that $0.67 go?!
I'll get to that in a moment, but let's look at those fees for a moment. These are what they were back in 2019/2020, but they revoked my access to my ink dashboard so I can't verify if they're still the same, but this is what my math was based on:
Tumblr media
How it works is they take the transaction fee out, depending on where the ink was purchased. Now keep that in mind, these are taken out at the cash out stage. If the ink was purchased via an app, it's 30% but via the website it's 15%. After that, Tapas takes their cut. If it's donated from users that's another 15%. But if the ink came from ad revenue (yes, they pay in their internal currency), it's 30%, though they don't take the transaction fee from that.
So how does that work out? Let's say you buy $10 worth of ink, the "most popular" tier, and give it to a single artist. That's 10,500 ink total. This is a quick summary of what happens to that $10.
Tumblr media
Now, let's look at what happens to that $10 that turns magically into $8.70 somehow when an artist tries to cash out, accounting for either web purchase or app purchase:
Tumblr media
So in both cases, $1.30 (13%) goes immediately into Tapas' pocket. Yes, that's almost as high as the share they take later. No, it doesn't figure into that fee. In fact, this "mystery" fee that I've labeled "Transaction Loss" is not documented anywhere on the website, and most people will refuse even exists (including staff members), but I've had these values confirmed officially (I'll get to that further down).
After the transaction loss, they take the "transaction fee", which varies by platform. That's $1.31 or $2.61 lost. Out of what's left, Tapas takes their 15%.
What started as $10 on the web is now $6.29. That's $3.71 lost or 37%. But if purchased through an app, it's now only $5.18. A loss of $4.82 or 48%.
What's even worse, is artists can't cash out until they reach $25 after fees. It's not as clear to work out what that would be at purchase due to the convoluted tiers, but it takes 41,600 ink for an artist to get $25.
The lowest amount paid up front to give an artist $25 is actually $40 (buy 2 of the $20 tiers). The most expensive is $52, requiring 26 packs of the $2 tier (excluding the "one time offer"). If you were feeling absurdly generous, and purchased the $50 tier and gave all of it to an artist, at cash out they'd have $36.13 if you purchased through the site and only $29.75 if purchased through an app.
Something important to note is that the 30% fee is enforced by the app stores. But any other decent company is up front about that fact and simply charge more to the user when making said purchase. Most notable is Twitch Bits and YouTube Premium. Both are cheaper when purchasing through a browser.
My original issue was with the change in value. The staff speaking on it said tracking the original price was impossible and they wanted to be able to offer "deals" to their users.
Well, if that's the case, how can they possibly know where ink was purchased after it was transferred to an artist, if they can't track what was originally paid for it? At the time, I had zero programming knowledge. Now I can call utter fucking bullshit on that. It's not an amorphous pool. Every single transaction has a database entry. Those entries have values attached. This includes original price and purchase location. This is made even more obvious by the reports that will show in the dashboard of how much you are given by each donor. So the value change is completely BY DESIGN.
Now, let's get to the validation of my calculations of $1 = 1200 ink after purchase.
Tumblr media
This is the very last message received from Michael Son, then Senior Editor in Chief now VP of Content. Text reads:
I apologize again - I haven't been keeping up with this topic due to the number of notifications hitting my inbox. I will review the ongoing discussions and respond early next next to clarify questions in regards to the deployment of the new dashboard language ($0.01 = 12 Ink) when hovering over the revenue coach marks. edit: waiting on approvals from other teams. will have some updates later.
After this, the thread was closed and I never heard another word from him. By this point, my access to the dashboard was revoked, so I could not confirm if this change ever actually happened.
This was not the first confirmation I received. Earlier in the thread, Yoon Kim (Chief Technical Officer) confirmed a lot of details mentioned here. Including the strange claim that they couldn't account for how much someone paid to buy the initial ink. Which is a flat out fucking lie.
Don't buy tapas Ink. Give directly to artist, instead. Tapas is using deceptive practices (and blatant lies) to obfuscate the process so they can take anywhere from a third to half of every dollar you try to give creators. Even the numbers assigned for ink is deceptive. On twitch it's easy, 100 bits = $1 to the creator, while you the user pays slightly more than $1 per 100 to account for fees. It's easy math to do in the moment. But calculating 1200 ink = $1 isn't nearly as intuitive.
This whole system is by design.
People love to treat Tapas like this itty bitty company run like Comic Fury. Like it's just a small team working in their free time. I got a lot of "leave them alone, it's the holidays" comments. They're a multi-national company with offices in at least 2 countries. They have investors. They were relatively recently purchased by a massive Korean media conglomerate. They are in no way a tiny company surviving on meager donations from users. They're taking well intentioned money just because they can.
Don't buy tapas ink. They're stealing your money.

The state of Indigenous languages in Canada
by u/throwbarrieaway
There are 243,155 people in Canada that were recorded as being able to speak an Indigenous language in the 2021 census. This is 0.67% of the total population of Canada. However, this is still 100k more than the population with an Indigenous first language. Centuries of oppression have resulted in the decline of Indigenous languages in Canada, and revival efforts exist today among generations that did not grow up speaking the language.
The top 9 Indigenous languages in Canada are:
Cree (an Algonquin language) with 87,875 speakers. Called a language, group of languages or a language continuum, most Cree speakers in Canada simply say they speak Cree.
Inuktitut (an Inuktut language) with 41,680 speakers. The main language of the Inuit in Canada, and the only language other than English or French spoken by a majority in a province or territory.
Ojibway (an Algonquin language) with 26,165 speakers. Similar to Cree, Ojibwe (or Ojibway in the census) has many dialects, though most identify with the language as a whole.
Oji-Cree (an Algonquin language) with 15,305 speakers. Also called Severn Ojibwe, this is an "Ojibway-Potawotami language" language/dialect kept separate from the rest in the census.
Dene (an Athabaskan language) with 11,555 speakers. Also called Denesuline or Chipewyan, spoken mostly in the northern half of Saskatchewan, it is arguably the top language there depending on how you measure Cree.
Innu (an Algonquin language) with 10,745 speakers. The main language of the Innu of Northeastern Quebec and Labrador.
Mi'kmaq (an Algonquin language) with 9,245 speakers. Mi'kmaq is an Eastern Algonquin language of the Maritime Provinces.
Blackfoot (an Algonquin language) with 6,685 speakers.
Atikamekw (an Algonquin language) with 6,815 speakers. In the Cree-Innu group, spoken mostly in the Saint-Maurice watershed north of Montreal.
Full stats can be explored in this table:
https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/dp-pd/prof/details/page.cfm?LANG=E&GENDERlist=1&STATISTIClist=1&DGUIDlist=2021A000011124&HEADERlist=18
Note on "Insufficient Speakers". Stats Canada has an anonymity filter on all data that turns any response below 10 people to 0. So, in the top right map that means less than 10 speakers of an indigenous language. In the main map that means less than 10 speakers of an individual language family, and the unstriped Algonquin divisions have less than 10 speakers of one of the four individual subgroups.

im using my excel powers for evil.
so we if assign a score to each episode based on it’s relative imdb ranking with (the #1 ranked episode = 1.0 points, the #327th ranked episode = ~0.003 points) and then sum up points for every writer, the top writers are:
1. Andrew Dabb (23.67 points) 2. Sera Gamble (19.61 points) 3. Ben Edlund (15.19 points)
of course, the stats look like this because andrew dabb has more episode credits than any other writer. so what if we averaged the number of points earned per episode to reward writers for their best work, and only included writers who wrote more than 3 episodes.
1. Eric Kripke (0.79 points/episode) 2. Sera Gamble & Jeremy Carver (tied at 0.67 points/episode) 3. Ben Edlund (0.63 points/episode)
NOW. this data is skewed bc i think some of the IMDB ratings are...dumb & bad. like truly baffling choices being made. so i want to figure out a way to add data from our polls & the initial survey i sent out. also this isnt to like prove who the best writer is its so that i can make a fake MVP trophy for this dumb lil polls project.

So, you want to build your own cyberdeck in Virtual Realities for Shadowrun (1st Edition). Part 4. (no you don’t)
From the start of the Cyberdecks chapter in Virtual Realities:
Deckers without any sense of style rely on decks purchased through a fixer, or god forbid, off the shelf. If a decker takes that route… He gets what he deserves. Should he decide to walk the path of a true technomancer…
…the decker will spend their entire shadowrunning career building that deck. Let’s see why!
Tumblr media
Who’s this “he”?
Most components of the deck depend upon the Master Persona Control Program (MPCP) Rating, both in cost, size, and design/construction time. Every different component requires two different skill tests:
A Design Test, typically using Computer Skill, for the writing of the source code, and
A Cooking Test, typically using Computer B/R Skill, where the code is “burned” onto optical chips.
This device [optical chip encoder] actually breaks down and rebuilds the optical chip using a quantum mechanical process. Once the process is completed, the programming code has been burned into the chip. Deckers refer to optical chip encoders as ovens and the optical-chip encoding process as cooking.
So, we’re off to a great start if all our cooking involves burnt food.
Tumblr media
The OCE has its own rating which adds dice to cook tests, so invest in the top of the line, Hitachi RM-AX (Rating 3) for 9500 ¥. This is just one of the required tools for constructing the deck. We’ll also need:
Microtronics Workshop (15,000 ¥)
Personal Computer (with minimum Mp depending upon component)
Each step – Design and Cooking – involves its own amount of time.
The maximum MPCP Rating a decker can write is 1.5 x Computer Skill, so assuming Computer 6, they’re writing a MPCP Rating 9. Design Test Target Number is equal to the Rating (9), and the Base Time is 8 x (Rating^2) in days, or 648 days. Minimum PC storage is 4 x (Rating^2), or 324 Mp.
Thus, your decker is out of the biz for 22 months just writing the source code for one component of their deck, but still must pay for their lifestyle. Even at Low, that’s 22,000 ¥.
Sure, but that time can be reduced, right? You divide the Base Time by the number of successes you achieve on the Construction Test and…that’s going to be a problem. Note the Target Number is 9 and you’re only rolling 6 dice. Yes, it is possible for you to get more than 1 success on that roll, but it is more probable that you will get no successes at all. Meaning, you have failed, you have wasted almost two years in your prime shadowrunning life and must start again.
Tumblr media
Hope you like rolling dice.
Aside on exploding dice probabilities
To roll at least a 9 on a single 6-sided die requires first rolling a six (probability 1/6) and then rolling a 3,4,5, or 6 on the re-roll (probability 2/3), for an overall probability of (1/6) x (2/3) = 1/9, or 11%. Rolling 6 dice, the expected number of successes is 6 x (1/9) = 2/3 = 0.67. Which is less than 1. On average, you will have to repeat this entire process until you get at least 1 success.
Maybe I can add Hacking pool? Nope!
Only characters with Computer skill have this pool, and only when in the Matrix.
Now, rolling a second time effectively means that you’re rolling 12 dice, so you’ll have an expected number of successes = 12*(1/9) = 1.3, so success finally. But that also means you’ve spent twice the amount of time (and paid twice the amount of lifestyle nuyen) just on the Design Test. If you only are only getting 2/3 of a success per test, on average, then you must make 3/2 = 1.5 tests to succeed, and only spend 1.5 x Base Time, or 972 days (at least 32 months) designing your MPCP.
At this point you’ve spent 100,430 ¥ (including cost of the PC with minimum Mp requirements – which is a lower estimate anyway because there’s more code to write) and you haven’t even started cooking chips yet. Cooking goes much faster (Base Time 27 days), and while the Cook Test TN is still 9, you get to add OCC dice to your Computer B/R skill, so you’re rolling 9 dice and have a clean 1 expected success.
While that’s cooking (paying another month of lifestyle), you can start writing source code for the deck’s Hardening, which is even worse than things were for the MPCP.
Maximum Hardening is half the MPCP (rounded down), or 4 for our maxed-out deck. Base Design Time is 360 days (2.5 x MPCP x Hardening^2) and Design Test Target number is MPCP + Hardening, or 13. Thirteen.
Tumblr media
Stay calm. Look at the adorable puppies.
You’re still only rolling 6 dice. Do I need to do the dice math again?
Tumblr media
*sigh* he’s going to do the dice math again…
To roll at least a 13 on an exploding d6 is the same as rolling a 12, so the probability on a single roll is (1/6) x (1/6) = 1/36. The expected number of successes rolling 6 dice is 6 * (1/36) = 1/6, so the expected number of times you’ll need to roll until you succeed is 6. With a base time of 360 days, that’s a total of 2160 days, or almost 6 years, and you’ve spent another 96,336 ¥ (Hardening + Lifestyle + PC memory increase).
Now repeat this process for Load Speed 90, I/O Speed 45 (both Target Number 9), Response Increase 2 (Target Number 11), and when every line of code is written and all chips are cooked, it’ll cost you 210,881 ¥ and a decade (3790 days) of your life to build the best cyberdeck you can.
This is the price a true technomancer must pay.
Tumblr media
Well that plus the cost of the sunglasses.
Now when the Street Samurai comes to you with a job, you can proudly pick up your new, state-of-the-art custom built cyberdeck and say, “Oh frag, I have write programs!”
