---
Roman, Virgil, and Janus began to go on dates all throughout the last month before the court hearing. At first, they kept the relationship a secret since it wasn’t official and it was more of an experimental thing. After their 5th date, the teens decided that they were ready to commit to a relationship after they confirmed that it would work out for them. And once it was official, they announced it to their friends.
Of course, their friends were extremely happy for the three. Remus of course pulled Virgil and Janus aside and gave them the mandatory talk about not hurting his sibling or else ze’ll kill them. Janus and Virgil promised they’ll take care of Roman and never hurt them.
In the end though, Remus was okay handing off zir twin since ze could see how happy Roman was with their boyfriends. All ze has ever wanted was for zir sibling to be happy and if Janus and Virgil give them that then ze is happy too.
The time eventually came.
The twins drive to their hometown for the hearing late at night so they can arrive at the court early in the morning. Iris decides to pay for a hotel room in the twins' hometown. She does this so that not only can the twins' friends go and support their friends, but also so that the twins have a place to stay after the hearing. Unfortunately, the others weren't allowed into the court hearing since it isn’t open to the public.
As they enter the courtroom, the twins avoid looking at their parents as much as they can. They do their best to tune out their parents’ voices, though this is much harder considering the fact that their parents have to make statements to the judge.
Eventually, Remus is called to make zir statement.
As ze stands there reading zir statement, ze can feel zir parents staring at zir. They look nearly identical since the last time ze saw them.
Zir mother’s chestnut brown skin seems to have gotten slightly lighter. She was still as short as ever, Roman having gotten their height from her. Her amber eyes that ze can feel glaring at zir are still as cold and sharp as ever. Her long wavy hair is tied up into a clean lower bun. Her appearance is cleaner than it usually is, probably something her lawyers advised her to do to make her seem more professional.
Remus isn’t as scared of zir mother as ze is of zir father. Zir father is 6'7", something zir's father always used to intimidate Remus. On top of his height, zir father is also muscular, a trait he works hard to keep since not only did it give him a good public image, but it was also something else he could use to strike fear into the twins. What scares Remus the most though is how similar ze looks to zir father. Zir's curly hair, facial features, and hair color come from zir father. Ze hated it, but ze knew there was nothing ze could do to change this.
In zir's statement, ze details some of the abuse zir was subjected to; However, ze avoids going into too much detail since ze knows the judge has already seen the evidence. Instead, ze mostly describes how zir parents’ abuse caused zir irreversible mental and physical damage.
Ze talks about how ze developed an eating disorder due to the neglect and negative comments zir parents made about zir body. Ze talked about how seeing zir parents abuse drugs at a young age led to zir becoming an addict as well. Ze mentioned how years of malnutrition has caused zir many side effects, everything from dry hair to a weakened immune system.
Once Remus is done with zir statement, ze is on the brink of crying. Knowing that zir parents, the people responsible for so much of zir pain, are in the room listening to zir talk bad about them made this whole situation so much harder for zir. Ze knows that if they don’t win this court case and ze is forced to go back home, this statement might be the death of zir. Ze just hopes that zir statement can help guarantee they win.
Roman is called to make their statement next.
In the beginning, the twins’ lawyer was adamant about Roman not making a statement. It wasn’t because they didn’t have anything important to say, it was because they’re super emotional. They have a harder time speaking about their past without breaking down than their older twin does.
But, after Roman wrote the statement and showed it to their lawyer, she agreed to let them read it in court. So for weeks, they practiced reading the statement over and over in front of their twin and their boyfriends.
At first, it was tough. Roman would barely be able to make it halfway through the statement before breaking down crying. However, the more they practiced and the more they got the support of those who love them, the easier it got for them.
So, as Roman stood in front of the judge, they stood strong. They read in a confident and powerful tone. They kept their emotions in check, making sure they didn’t crumble or give their parents the satisfaction of making them cry. They kept a strong composure, maintaining eye contact with the judge throughout most of their speech.
Roman’s statement was vastly different to their twin’s. They chose to speak about how much better they’re living now compared to in the past. They speak about how amazing it is to finally live with people who actually love and care about them. They speak about how liberating it is to know that their friends accept their gender identity and sexuality, something their parents could never do. They speak about how refreshing it is to come home and not have to worry about not having electricity, medicine, food, or even just clean water.
They go into very few details about the actual abuse they go through. They do mention their struggle with anorexia, kleptomania, depression, and drug addiction due to the way they grew up. They talk about how they only managed to survive living in their parents’ house because of Remus and if it weren't for zir, they wouldn’t be standing in the courtroom.
As Roman comes to the end of their statement, they turn to their parents.
“And to the people who like to call themselves my parents, you have done nothing to earn that title. You both have no idea how to care for anyone who isn't yourselves. For that reason, neither of you deserve the right to have custody of me or Remus, who for the longest time was forced to take the role of my parent.”
Remus smiles softly. Ze was so proud of how much zir twin has grown and matured. Ze just hopes that they’ll win and be able to continue growing.
After Roman’s statement, all that was left was going over a couple more documents and lawyer statements.
Soon though, the judge is ready to make the final decision.
The twin’s tightly hold hands, both of them anxious and scared for the results. This was it. This is their chance to finally be free from the years of suffering they’ve endured. This is the last chance they have to start anew.
Iris stands outside of the courtroom with her cousin and his friends. They’ve been standing out there for about an hour now. No one knew how much longer Roman and Remus would be inside, but it didn’t matter. They were willing to wait out here as long as it took.
They knew that the second their friends came outside, they would need support.
So as the doors of the courtroom opened, they all immediately prepared for whatever reaction the twins would have coming out. However, what they weren’t expecting was to see the twins’ parents walk out first with their lawyers.
“Virgil, Janus, don’t,” Iris mumbles as she notices the anger in the two teen’s faces. “Stay focused. Roman and Remus will come out soon, that’s all that matters.”
Virgil scoffs and holds Janus’ hand, “I guess. They’re lucky you’re here.”
“You wouldn’t really be able to do anything even if she wasn’t here Virge,” Logan chimes in, “There’s literally police officers everywhere. Besides, they really don’t deserve your time, emotion, or attention.”
“There they are!” Remy calls out and points to the courtroom doors before Virgil can respond to Logan.
The twins walk out with their lawyers. Roman is crying, a hand covering their mouth. Their other hand is being held tightly by Remus, who is whispering something to zir twin with a bright smile and tears in zir eyes. Their lawyers are talking among themselves, smiles also present on their faces.
Their friends immediately run over to them.
Roman practically lunges at their boyfriends when they notice them. Meanwhile, Remus just waits for the others to get to zir.
“Ro?! What happened?!” Janus asks frantically as he hugs them back, “Did you win?!”
The tan twin doesn’t answer, crying too much to say anything. They can’t even seem to nod or shake their head. Instead, all they can really do is let out an incoherent sound.
Emile notices and turns to Remus for answers instead, “Did you guys win?”
“How about you ask them?” Remus responds as ze points to zir lawyers.
The teens turn to the lawyers with worried and curious expressions.
One of the lawyers gets a file and holds it out to Iris, “Here you go, ma’am. You have to sign these papers and turn them into the court in the span of two months to finalize the adoption process.”
Iris takes the papers with a shock expression before smiling brightly, “Oh my! Thank you so so much!”
The lawyers nod and say goodbye before walking off.
“You won!!” Patton yells excitedly.
Remus lets out a small laugh, a couple tears roll down zir cheeks as ze nods, “We did it! We’re finally free!”
“That’s amazing!” Virgil smiles widely, hugging Roman tighter before kissing their forehead and whispering to them, “You’re free, Ro!”
Roman finally manages to nod as they continue crying from the overwhelming joy they feel. They were finally going to have the opportunity to experience a normal life. They finally have the chance to try and heal from the years of abuse they’ve experienced.
The teens stay outside of the court room for about 30 minutes as they embrace and celebrate the huge victory they’ve just had.
Eventually, they go to the hotel to rest.
Early the next day, they start heading back home. Some of them ride with Iris and others go with Remus.
They get to Iris’s house at around midday and for the rest of the day they throw a small party to celebrate. It was amazing. They had the time of their lives as they let the rest of the world fade away. That evening, all that mattered was the victory and nothing else.
“Are you tired?” Logan asks Remus, seeing zir yawn.
Remus leans against the wall. The two of them are in the backyard. They had stepped out to get some fresh air while the others were still in the living room.
“Yeah, a bit,” Remus responds. “I mean everything still feels so surreal and a bit overwhelming. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster.”
The pale teen nods, “That’s fair. I can’t imagine it’s easy to go through so much trauma and emotional instability.”
The other just nods and for a couple of minutes the two of them go quiet. They allowed nature to be the only noise around them. They both knew they needed a moment of silence and this was the only chance they really had to achieve that.
“Hey Remus,” Logan eventually says as they look up at the sky. “Can I confess something to you?”
The curly haired teen nods, “Go ahead.”
“I have a crush on you. And I have for a while now,” Logan gets straight to the point after taking a deep breath.
Remus blushes deeply as ze is caught completely off guard, “H-huh?!”
“You don’t have to return the feelings,” the shorter teen reassures as they look at Remus, “You don’t even have to respond to my confession if you’re not ready to yet. I know it’s been a long couple of days for you, so don’t feel pressured to give me a response.”
The twin takes a deep breath and nods, “Can I give you my response another day? I need some time to think about everything that has happened.”
Logan smiles and nods, “Take as long as you need.”

Where the Ashes Settle
----
Roman was prepared for normal day, leave the hotel, get coffee, go to the station and head home.
He hadn't made room in his schedule for getting caught up in a villain fight, nor getting kidnapped by the villain and his arch-nemisis, though.
----
| Ao3 |
Warnings: Injury, kidnapping
Pairings: Anxceit, possible future anarociet depending on how you wanna interprit.
Word count: 3437
Notes:
I wrote this whole thing today because I was bored and wanted to have some fun. I've been wanting to make a superhero au for a very long time but I'm too lazy so here's a oneshot instead. :) - i't's not really edited as of right now, I might come back and fix it later, but I can't say for sure.
----
Roman was just a civilian.
He had no useful powers, as much as he’d always wanted to be a hero, being a super one is just not on the cards. Voice Projection. That was Roman’s power, he could make his voice be heard from anywhere, with a microphone it was amazingly useful during concerts. But he could only make his voice as loud as he could yell, so the most he’d be able to do as a hero would be… to cause confusion, potentially.
So Roman wasn’t a superhero, he was a regular person, an indie singer who was nowhere near as well known as he wanted to be, doing gigs in pubs and at small events who didn’t have the money to hire the bigshots or specifically wanted acts that no-one had heard of. It was fine, Roman loved singing, holding the attention of a crowd was something he was good at, writing and performing music had been something he loved since before he could remember.
He was well aware of the more super goings on of the world, of course. He followed the heroes almost religiously, their instagram stories, the events they were doing, the latest battles they’d won against upstart supervillains. His favourite was a longstanding battle between one of the top heroes - Viper, who was surprisingly popular despite his dark and mysterious persona - and one of the most renowned villains in the country - Tempest, who looked and played the part of arch-nemesis very well.
Roman followed their battles over the internet, watching the videos and footage. Their fights were always immense and almost beautiful, they were evenly matched, skill wise, and they both had crazy power sets. Viper could shapeshift, between human and animal forms, including - to Roman’s delight when he saw the battle - a dragon. Tempest could create - as his name suggested - storms, he could walk on the clouds, draw lightning strikes from the heavens, create heavy rains and strong winds whenever he wanted.
It was brilliant to watch, after the fight had taken place from the comfort of his mediocre apartment living room.
It wasn’t quite so great to be there in person.
He’d been getting a coffee at a cute little cafe he’d found whilst staying for a week in a town a few hours out from his own for a few pretty good gigs he’d been able to snag and he was just about to head to the station to get his train back home. He’d decided to stop by the shop on the way. He’d known something was wrong when he’d stepped back onto the street, coffee cup in hand, guitar case slung across one shoulder and backpack on the other, to find it deserted.
Thunder. He heard it first as he made his way down the street, turning the corner to see the dark, angry clouds gathering just up the street. He rushed forward - blinded from the danger by his eagerness to see the fight - maybe he’d be able to film it if he could get a good view! Witnessing a battle in person - especially one on this magnitude - was rare and absolutely granted bragging rights over all your family and friends, so Roman wasn’t about to pass up such an opportunity.
He must have approached from somewhere behind Tempest, as he creeped along the street and pulled out his phone to record - even as the wind whipped at his hair, thankfully it wasn’t raining. He knew that this was stupid, he’d be in a lot of danger coming this close, but he felt almost like he had to.
Further up the street Roman spotted Viper, shifted into some kind of big cat crouched atop an already damaged car, making up some kind of blockade at the other end of the street. Roman could hear yelling and crying from behind it - he must be protecting people that way. The pair of supers began to fight properly, thunder booming in the sky as they clashed. Viper turned mid-jump into what looked to be a griffin, and ran at Tempest. Roman watched in wonder as the two clashed in front of him.
Lightning struck, too close to him to be safe. He let out an involuntary yelp for fear when the building began to catch fire. His eyes darted between the rapidly spreading fire to the fighting pair. Neither of them had noticed. He heard a scream from inside the building and - panicking - Roman decided he would have to do something.
“Hey!” He called, but his voice was lost to the raging winds. He tried to use his power, placing his voice nearer to Viper - “Hey! The- the building’s on fire! To your left!”
Viper looked over, golden eyes widening for just a moment, before he was slammed into by Tempest.
Shit -! Roman thought, glancing back at the building again, breath quickening, he’d just gotten Viper hurt - he was sure he could probably face legal action for interfering like that, and the people in the building were no closer to getting saved. His power really was useless after all.
Roman was just trying to figure out what to do when the fire began to spread too close to him - across the debris already on the floor. He took a few steps back only to scream as something came hurting at him in the wind. The bit of flying debris smacked into his shoulder hard, sending him flying to the ground and leaving him winded. His vision swam as he laid there on the ground, distantly aware of more yelling than before, was it closer? And the crackling of fire, the screaming of sirens somewhere far in the distance. Roman hoped they’d be fast enough to save the people in the buildings.
“Shit!” Virgil yelled when he heard someone scream from far too close to them to be from the crowd. Rearing back from where he’d been about to punch Janus and looking around just in time to see the civilian standing far too close to the fight get flung backwards to the ground - almost into the raging inferno that was the building behind him.
Janus shifted back to himself as he stared at the same sight. Virgil growled, well aware people were still watching, and darting forward - grabbing the hero by the collar of his shirt and holding him close, making sure his expression was mean enough to appease any watching cameras even as he whispered his split second plan to the hero.
“I’m going to ‘kidnap’ him,” Virgil said, voice barely a hiss, “And run, make it look like you beat me and then get the people in that building out- I’ll make sure he’s okay back at the apartment. ”
“Be careful, Darling,” Janus told him, before transforming into a giant beast and grabbing Virgil, with a snarling growl, flinging him across the street towards the knocked out civilian. Virgil landed expertly, made a show of looking around as if disoriented and got up. Janus roared and Virgil took that as his cue to run, scooping up the civilian and grabbing his things on a second thought before grabbing one of his clouds and swiftly escaping the scene, starting a downpour as he did so. He hoped maybe it would help with the fire.
He really didn’t want innocent people to get hurt.
When Virgil arrived at the apartment building, the civilian now fully unconscious in his arms, he was stopped by his security guy, Logan. Virgil groaned internally as Logan questioned why Virgil was carrying some knocked out guy and why the fuck he had a guitar.
“Don’t question me ,” Virgil snapped, his voice slipping into his supervillain persona’s for a moment, startling Logan. He’d have to apologise later, but he had no time for Logan’s never ending questions right now, “When Viper gets here, let him in.”
Logan looked at him skeptically, but Virgil’s expression hardened, practically daring Logan to argue with him. Eventually he just sighed and nodded, allowing Virigl to make his way into the building. He saw Logan rub his forehead out the corner of his eye as he walked away. Maybe he should make him an apology cake.
Carrying the civilian up the stairs was easy when you were able to manipulate the wind to give you a boost. When Virgil finally arrived at his apartment he went straight to the spare room and laid Roman down carefully on the bed, placing the guitar and bag nearby before setting about checking him for injuries.
He wasn’t burned, thank goodness, but Virgil was worried about his shoulder where the debris must’ve slammed into him. There were bits of it embedded in his skin and the joint looked dislocated. Virgil just prayed that was the worst of it as he - as gently as he could - popped his shoulder back into place and removed the biggest pieces of debris. Cleaning him up and bandaging his shoulder properly. He was used enough to doing this for himself by now.
Until Virgil heard Janus arrive at his front door, Virgil stayed sitting by the bed, making sure the civilian was okay the entire time.
Roman felt groggy when he woke up, like he’d drunk too much at a party or something, though he couldn’t remember any party. This wasn’t his house either - the bed he was lying on felt unfamiliar - and very soft. The covers were tucked up to his chin and he felt very warm and safe here as he stared up at the plain ceiling. No fluorescent lights - so probably not a hospital either. Where the hell was he?
From the next room, he could hear voices, though he couldn’t quite make out what they were saying. When he tried to move up, pain shot through his shoulder enough to make him gasp - and then his head started to feel like it was splitting apart. Right, he remembered now.
Just because Roman remembered what had happened to him before he had clearly passed out, that didn’t help him to understand where the hell he was, or who was talking in the other room, or who these lovely purple bed covers belonged to.
His head was killing him, so he closed his eyes again.
“He’s been asleep for almost a full day now,” He heard someone say, the sound causing shooting pains in his skull, was that voice kinda familiar? It felt like it was, but Roman couldn’t place it, “I’m starting to worry it might be worse than a bump on the head.”
“Perhaps it would have been better to take him to a hospital, Darling.” The second voice said - this one was even more familiar than the first. He started to think he must be dreaming, though, because surely Viper wasn’t actually here. He’d heard that voice enough in interviews and publicity stunts, maybe he was dreaming?
“Yeah well - it wasn’t like we had much time to make that call,” The other voice huffed.
“I know,” Viper sighed, “If he doesn’t wake up in the next half hour we should take him to the closest hospital.”
The other voice scoffed, “And what, tell them: ‘Oh hey doctor, here’s this guy I almost killed yesterday and then kidnapped because we didn’t know what to do!’ How would that go over, you think?”
“...You’ve got a point,” Said Viper. Roman stewed in his own thoughts as he pretended to sleep, yesterday, almost killed, kidnapped - that familiar voice… Was that Tempest ?? - what the hell was Tempest doing here with Viper, and had they really kidnapped him? What the fuck was happening?
Roman groaned softly as the pain in his head spiked and both of them went silent.
“Is he awake?” Tempest asked, Viper made a noncommittal noise in response, before seemingly walking over.
“Hello, darling,” Viper said, voice much closer now, “Are you awake?”
That soft tone was so different from the sarcastic, sassy persona he always displayed for the public. It made Roman feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
“Hey- I thought I was ‘darling’!” Tempest said, from further away. He sounded like he was pouting and Roman resisted the urge to laugh as he peeled open his eyes again, having to blink a few times as the light made his head spin.
“You’re ‘Darling’, with a capital ‘D’, Darling, everyone else is a lowercase ‘d’ darling,” Viper dismissed, before looking back at him and smiling. That was Viper alright, his signature scales were glittering gold in the dim light of the room and his mismatched eyes - one blue, one gold - were looking at him with an expression so caring and soft Roman almost reeled back. Why on earth was the hero looking at him that way? His hair was loose, tumbling to his shoulders in blonde waves and topped with a fancy hat that seemed a little silly compared to the comfortable clothes he was wearing.
His gaze wandered warily to where Tempest stood, a fair ways behind Viper - leaning on the wall beside the door. His identity wasn’t quite so obvious, considering his costume consisted of a mask and a hood. But Roman recognised his electric purple hair and violet eyes regardless. He had his hands stuffed in the pockets of an oversized hoodie and seemed fairly relaxed in posture.
“Will you sit up and drink something for me, darling?” Viper asked, gently placing a hand on Roman’s shoulder to help him up. The movement made him feel dizzy, but he did think water would be pretty nice right now.
“...Where am I?” Roman asked after taking a sip of cold water from the glass Viper pressed into his hands.
“My apartment,” Tempest answered, not moving from across the room.
“...Why?” He asked, frowning.
“I needed to get you out of the way so that Jay here could save the people in that building,” Tempest shrugged, earning a look from the hero, he groaned, “He’s literally in my house - I don’t think him knowing the first letter of your name is a real issue, here.”
Roman frowned, “Wait- but-” He thought, trying to put the pieces together, hadn’t Tempest struck that building with lighting? “Didn’t you… mean to set it on fire?”
“What? No, of course not,” Tempest looked almost offended at the accusation, “I missed with the strike, that’s all.”
Confused, Roman looked between them, Viper chuckled, “There’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than you know, dear,” He said, gently patting Roman’s shoulder. He felt himself melt beneath the touch.
“Like… what?” Roman asked.
“Things you don’t need to know about,” Tempest said, finally pushing himself off of the wall to walk closer. He sat back down on the edge of the bed and offered something to Roman, “Here, painkillers - if you need them - you took a nasty hit, they’re still in the packaging.”
Roman watched the both of them as he took the painkillers, examining the packet before taking one.
“I… owe you an apology for that, too, had I known you were standing there I would’ve made sure the debris didn’t hit you.”
It suddenly made a lot more sense why despite how destructive and violent Viper and Tempest’s fights were, no civilian ever actually got hurt.
“Thank you for the warning, by the way, darling,” Janus told him, shifting to gently card fingers through Roman’s hair.
“Hm?” Tempest asked, looking up in confusion.
“He warned me about the fire… I’m assuming you used your power?” Roman nodded, “I’m sorry I couldn’t act on it sooner.”
“It’s… fine, I just wanted to do something - did everyone get out okay?” Roman asked.
“Yes,” Janus nodded, “I got everyone out unharmed.”
Roman breathed a sigh of relief, wincing at the pain in his shoulder as he did so. He looked around at the other two, before sighing and resting his head back against the headboard.
“That’s good,” He mumbled.
“You’re welcome to go back to sleep,” Tempest said, “As long as you eat something first - you’ve been out for at least twenty-four hours by now.”
Roman groaned, even though Tempest was right, he was hungry, and having attention drawn to that fact just made him hungrier.
“Fine,” He mumbled. Tempest looked thoughtful for a moment, before nodding to himself.
“How about I order pizza for the three of us,” he suggested, “We haven't eaten dinner either - do you like pizza?”
“What kind of heathen doesn’t like pizza?” Roman asked, trying not to laugh. Laughing hurt. Tempest chuckled and pulled out his phone.
For a long few minutes, they just sat there. Viper was playing with his hair and Roman didn’t mind in the slightest - aside from being a little confused - and Tempest was messing around on a phone, supposedly ordering them pizza.
Eventually, Viper broke the silence, “What is your name, darling?” He asked.
“Oh- it’s Roman,” Roman said, “Roman Piper.”
Tempest looked up from his phone, eyes a little wider than before, “Roman Piper, as in - the singer Roman Piper?”
Roman was too flabbergasted to speak for a moment, “I- yes- yes, that’s me, you’ve uh- you’ve heard of me?”
Viper just hid his face with his hand and chuckled as Tempest lit up.
“ Heard of you? Dude! I love your music!” He said, “I… can’t believe I fucking kidnapped my favourite music artist.”
Roman couldn’t help it, he snorted, bursting out laughing, though his cheeks were red, “I was actually um- here to do a few gigs… but uh- I think I appreciate this, actually, saves me the hospital bills.”
“Downtown? In that old bar a few days ago? I was there -”
Viper tapped him on the shoulder, leaning in and whispering, “He’ll talk about you for hours if we don’t stop him, darling, though - for the record, your music is lovely.”
Roman blushed a deep red, hiding his face in his hands. Don’t get him wrong! He loves meeting people who liked his music, but when those people where the most notorious villain in the country and his arch-nemisis (Though Roman was starting to think something else was going on there too) who he’d been looking up to for yours it was a little bit different.
“I’m supposed to be resting, right?” Roman said, interrupting whatever tangent Tempest was about to go on.
“Yes, you are,” Viper said, smiling.
“Hm,” Tempest said, “I could put on a movie or something while we wait for pizza?”
Roman brightened, “That sounds wonderful - hm… would it be a step too far if I asked for your real names?”
“Hmm…” Viper said with a soft smile, “You can call me Jay, if you’d like, it’s halfway there - perhaps I’ll give you my real name in the future, darling.”
Unable to help himself, Roman grinned - the idea that they might not part ways once this whole ordeal was over was a lovely one. He was honestly starting to quite like these two - not to mention how curious he was about whatever ‘behind the scenes’ things were going on.
“If that’s what we’re doing,” Tempest said, standing up and offering a hand to Jay, who took it, in turn offering his arm to help up Roman, “then you can call me V, for now.”
“Lovely, both of you,” Roman smiled, letting Jay put his arm around Roman’s back for stability after he stumbled a little to lead him out of the bedroom to a dim, cozy living room strung with fairy lights. It was cute and warm and safe - very homely and cozy looking - totally not what he would’ve expected from the villain had he been asked two days ago. Now it seemed… a little more fitting.
Jay guided him to sit down on the sofa and V quickly joined them after grabbing a small stack of DVDs that he handed to Roman to choose from. He was delighted to find that they were all disney.
After a long period of deliberation that had V chuckling and Jay sighing, in exasperation, Roman finally settled on Moana - which he handed to V to put on. Before long, the three of them were squashed together on the two-seater sofa, with Roman in the middle. Something in the back of his mind told him that he shouldn’t feel as safe as he did, considering he was in the home of a supervillain, cuddled between two extremely powerful people who he didn’t really know the intentions of.
But despite that, he felt the warm haze of sleep drift over him as the movie continued and they ate their pizza in calm, comfortable silence.
Roman was passed out on Janus’ shoulder before the film even neared its end.

Picture Imperfect
Prompts: Hello! I really love your stories! You’re probably my favorite author actually— And I’ve read all your Roman Angst stories already (Multiple times XD) But I was rereading Lie To Me and I got an idea for a prompt— If you don’t want to write it then that’s cool but here—
Janus can hear lies and he knows Roman lies about a lot of thinks, and so he takes to helping him with it. (Like in Lie To Me) But Roman doesn’t want to tell the others because he doesn’t want them to worry and he doesn’t feel like he deserves their help, but then something happens that gives someone else’s Janus’ ability and they hear the lies. I don’t really mind whoever gets the ability so however you’d like to do it with is fine but maybe Anarociet or just Roceit w/ Some Creativitwins bonding? Even if you don’t do this thanks for reading my little idea! (Sorry this is so long!) Can’t wait to read anything else you might put out! ^^ - anon
idea for a fic where roman gets everyone to apologize to each other.. but it seems a little *too* perfect (and maybe everyone apologizes to everyone else Except roman). someone does a little snooping and finds out that roman's been practicing with fake versions of the sides (created via the Imagination) to find out the perfect way to get them to agree again. cue angst. - anon

Roman sighs, leaning his weight on his desk. The Imagination is sparkling through the doorway and he can almost hear it luring him in, come, Prince Roman, come to where all of your dreams come true.
But it’s picked the wrong lie. Roman, after all, does not have his dreams come true.
“So, I’m sorry,” Patton says, twisting his hands together in front of him, “I’m sorry it took me so long.”
Logan pushes his glasses up and sighs. “Oh, Patton, it’s not entirely your fault.”
“Isn’t it?”
“No.” He carefully takes Patton’s hands and separates them, squeezing to keep him from trying again. “You are not singlehandedly responsible for the consequences of growing up.”
He takes a deep breath of his own.
“I have been…I know I’ve been guilty of trying to make Thomas more mature, more…adult. But I realize now that the quest I’ve set us on for maturity is in and of itself immature.”
Virgil snorts. “Say ‘mature’ one more time, L.”
Logan chuckles a little sadly. “I’ve been immature. And for that, I apologize.”
——————
Roman sighs, leaning his weight on his desk. The Imagination is sparkling through the doorway and he can almost hear it luring him in, come, Prince Roman, come to where all of your dreams come true.
But it’s picked the wrong lie. Roman, after all, does not have his dreams come true.
A weight presses between his shoulder blades and he stifles a noise. He didn’t mean to be so awful today, he didn’t think he would be awful today. But he’d woken up and decided to put on shimmery red eyeshadow and that must’ve been a mistake because every argument he got into today ended with a remark about it.
Logan said it demonstrated his extravagance and inability to settle. Virgil said it was as garish as he is. Patton said it was too much. Remus said it looked pretty, which is an insult coming from Remus when he says it like that.
Janus told him it looked good.
Sparkles begin to run down his face as he sinks slowly into the chair. The need to put his head down and sob until it runs all the way off twists something vital in his chest and he’s just able to stop the noise that slips out. He settles for closing his eyes and letting it hang between his elbows instead.
Hands softly squeeze his shoulders to announce their presence.
“My prince,” a soft voice whispers, “raise your head.”
It wouldn’t be the first time he’s Imagined a person here to help him. But he can’t do it today.
“I’m here, my prince,” it says again, even after Roman’s thought to dismiss it, “come, sweetie, just look at me.”
…sweetie?
Roman slowly raises his head, eyes widening when he sees Janus in front of him. Janus smiles, and Roman jerks back in his seat.
“Come now, surely I didn’t startle you that much?”
Roman scrambles up and backs away. Janus raises his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” he says solemnly, “I’m just here to talk.”
Roman backs away slowly. This wouldn’t be the first time an Imagination construct has gotten loose into his room, nor the first time he’s had to, um, contain something before it got out. Slowly, he keeps backing toward the Imagination door.
Janus raises an eyebrow, expression turning playful. “Am I going to have to chase you?”
“You want me,” Roman mutters, “you’re going to have to catch me.”
“Oh?” The playful grin widens. “Alright, then.”
Roman swallows, backing up until he can feel the light on his shoulders. Janus starts to come toward him, pace slow enough that Roman could get around him if he wanted. He’s almost there. If he can just get to the door—
He turns on his heel and reaches—
“Gotcha.”
Arms wind gently but firmly around him, pulling him against a strong chest. His fingers just brush the edge of the door before he’s gently but firmly pulled away. He’s turned to stare up at Janus’s face.
“I’ve caught you, little prince,” Janus murmurs, one of his hands brushing Roman’s hair back from his forehead, “what should I do?”
Roman swallows. “What do snakes normally do with what they catch?”
“I am hungry, little prince.” Janus leans closer, mouth near his ear. “Should I eat you?”
Is he serious? Maybe this is just one of his weird flirting moments. Maybe he’s—oh, oh, no, that’s a hiss, shit, is he actually going to eat me?
“J-Janus—“
“Oh, relax, sweetie, I’m just teasing.”
“…okay.”
Janus chuckles, adjusting his hold so they can look at each other. “You look so worried, it’s alright, little prince, I would never.”
Roman stares at him. “What—what’re you doing here?”
“I told you. I want to talk to you.” Roman glances down at the position they’re in. “If I let you go, will I have to catch you again?”
He considers it. It would be easier to slam the Imagination door shut and just…not have to deal with this anymore. But the horrible selfish part of him that wants to know what this version of Janus will do screams for him to let him stay.
Roman sets his mouth.
“…I won’t run.”
Janus opens his arms and Roman turns, slamming the door to the Imagination shut. As the light fades, he bows his head, letting out a shaky breath.
“Well, that was dramatic.”
Roman whirls around, eyes widening to see Janus still standing there. He’s—he’s still here?
Janus raises an eyebrow when Roman tenses again, opening his arms. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“What—how—you’re still here.”
“Yes,” Janus says slowly, “why wouldn’t I be?”
Roman shakes himself off. “Sorry. I must be tired. How can I help you?”
“That,” Janus says sharply, pointing at him, “that is what I’m here to talk to you about.”
“…what?”
Janus sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Roman, do you know what my abilities are?”
“You can make us be quiet if there are things Thomas doesn’t want to know, you can shapeshift the way the rest of us can, you can…teleport…?”
“I’m Deceit, Roman. So what can I do?”
“I don’t know…tell lies? Can’t we all do that?”
“Yes, but I can also tell when you’re lying.”
Roman’s blood runs cold. Janus’s expression softens a little when he sees it, slowly extending a hand. Roman eyes it warily.
“Come here, sweetie.”
“Why?”
“Because right now, you’re telling yourself you don’t deserve to be comforted even though you’re struggling to stand up and you’re cold.”
Roman’s head snaps up. “How—“
“I can hear lies, Roman.” Janus wiggles his fingers. “Now come here.”
The firm undertone makes Roman move before he’s realized it, taking Janus’s hand and letting him pull him close again. He frets for a moment about where to put his hands before he’s awkwardly resting them on Janus’s shoulders.
“There,” Janus murmurs, “now, was that so hard?”
Roman studiously avoids eye contact.
A sigh. “Well, yes, I suppose that’s the point I’m trying to make.”
“How can you hear lies?”
“It’s…part of my powers, Roman. I didn’t ask for it and I didn’t seek it out.” Janus gently ruffles his hair. “I just can.”
“…can you stop?”
Another sigh, longer this time. “No, Roman. I can’t turn it off.”
Shit. Shit.
“Just like right now I can hear you telling yourself you couldn’t be more of an inconvenience if you tried. Which, first off, isn’t true because you’re not an inconvenience—“
“Well—“
“—and second,” Janus says over him, “I think you’re vastly underestimating your own abilities.”
“But if I’m making you hear all of these things, then—“
“—then you need someone to help you.”
“What?”
“Roman,” Janus says patiently, “what did I just tell you about my powers?”
“…that you can hear lies?”
“Yes, Roman.” He looks at him pointedly. “Lies.”
Roman looks at him blankly.
“They’re lies, Roman, that’s why I can hear them. You are not an inconvenience, you do deserve to be comforted, and you aren’t something to be overlooked.”
“B-but—“
“No buts, little prince,” Janus whispers, “they’re not true. I promise you, they’re not true.”
——————
…but then…but then what am I supposed to believe?
“Oh, come off it, L, you’re also not singlehandedly responsible for all the shit that’s happened around here.”
“Language!”
“Shit, sorry, I—oh, fuck—oh, shit—“
Virgil’s hand claps itself over his mouth as Patton giggles. After a moment, Janus lets him go.
“…thanks, J.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Virgil takes a deep breath. “I am…I’m sorry too.”
“For what, Virgil?”
“I’m the bad guy. And before you say anything,” he says quickly, raising his voice as the others go to protest, “I don’t mean that as in I’m a ‘bad guy,’ or anything.”
“Yes, Wreck-It, Ralph, come through.”
Virgil swats Remus’s shoulder. “I just mean that in most of the…y’know, the plots we do, I’m normally the one who pushes back the most. Slows us down.”
“Keeps us cautious,” Logan corrects gently, “more often than not, you’re the healthy response of human fear we have to…anything. Without you, we would be in much more danger.”
“We’ve been over this, kiddo,” Patton says, reaching over to ruffle Virgil’s hair, “you’re not doing anything wrong by being you.”
——————
“No, Janus.”
“Roman, listen to me—“
“I’m not telling them!”
Janus sighs, reaching out for him when Roman curls himself into a corner on the couch. “Sweetie, come here.”
“…just because I cuddle with you doesn’t mean I’m giving in.”
“I know.”
Roman reluctantly pries himself out of the corner and lets Janus wrap an arm around him. A hand ruffles his hair and he leans on Janus’s shoulder.
“I think they would understand,” he says softly, “they care about you, sweetie.”
He can’t stop the scoff.
“They do. I know you don’t believe it, but—“
“They care about the versions of me they can control.”
“…okay, that’s not entirely false—“
“See?”
“—but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to help you.” When Roman remains silent, he tilts his chin up. “Do you think the others are bad people?”
“What? No, no, of course not, I—wait, is this one of those things where there isn’t such a thing as a good person or a bad person?”
“Not necessarily, but that’s not a bad idea.”
“No, I don’t think they’re bad people.”
“Do you think that if any of them were told that someone needed help, they would say no?”
Roman looks away.
“Roman?”
“No,” he mumbles, “not really.”
“Then why is it different for you?”
Because what I want isn’t things they want to give me. Because I want too much. Because I’m selfish and this isn’t even a problem.
“Little prince,” Janus murmurs and Roman buries his face in his hands. “Shh, shh, it’s okay. I’m not mad.”
“It’s hard enough for me just having you help me, okay?”
“And I’m very grateful you’ve let me.” Hands cover his and coax them away. “But you don’t have to assume the worst of them.”
“I don’t have to assume it, I know it’s true.”
Janus startles, brow furrowing as he looks at Roman. “What?”
“Nevermind. Let’s just drop it.”
——————
“Besides,” Remus says as he absentmindedly rubs his shoulder, “I think I’m the bad guy now.”
“Whoa, hey, no—“
“I am!” Remus spreads his arms wide. “I’m the bad guy! I’m the big bad villain who scares Thomas and must be defeated, look at how much Lolo was built up to be the good guy!”
“Remus,” Logan says, “that’s not—“
“Oh, come off it, Nerdy Wolverine, you know I’m the worst. And most of the time that’s fine! You lot can be so boring, where’s your sense of fun?”
Janus just reaches out and takes Remus’s hand in his. “You said ‘most of the time.’”
Remus deflates a little. “Well…yeah.”
“Remus,” Patton says, reaching out for him too, “we owe you an apology too.”
“No, no, no, you’re all doing what you’re supposed to be doing.” Remus swallows, a bit of his mania slipping away, “protecting Thomas.”
“But not from you.” Virgil nudges his shoulder. “You’re part of Thomas too.”
“I’m the part of Thomas that has to be hidden away,” Remus mumbles, “I’m s—“
“If you say something bad about yourself again, I will physically fight you.”
“Don’t finish that sentence, sweetie.”
“You don’t have to apologize, Remus.”
“That’s enough outta you.”
Remus’s chuckle is a little watery, but it’s there and that’s all that matters. Then Janus sighs.
“Besides, if anyone needs to apologize for hurting Thomas…it’s me.”
——————
Janus comes to him again on a dark night when tears are already streaming down his cheeks. He wants to apologize—he’s sure he’s practically screaming to Janus—but he won’t hear any of it, wiping his tears and shushing him tenderly.
“I’m sorry—“
“It’s okay, sweetie, it’s okay. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Why are you doing this,” Roman manages around the sobs, “why—why’re you helping me? Why’re you being so kind?”
Janus gives him the same answer he always does. “Because you’re worth being kind to, sweetie, and because you genuinely believe no one will want to help you.”
Roman just sobs into his chest. Janus, like he always does, holds him, murmuring soft reassurances and running his hand through his hair.
He wishes he could just stop lying. That he could stop being a horrible person and—
No.
That he could…that he could stop lying.
Janus hums. “It’s not your fault, sweetie, you’ve been taught to believe things. It’s going to take time to unlearn them.”
“But it’s hard.”
“I know, sweetie, I know.”
When his head starts to hurt from crying, Janus lays him down on the bed and tucks him in, letting him sniffle and bury his head in his shoulder.
“What would help,” Janus asks softly, “to make you less scared of them?”
Roman shrugs.
“What about practicing? Like rehearsing your lines?”
“I’m just gonna cry more.”
“That’s okay.”
No, it’s not. It’s not okay.
“Sweetie…”
“Sorry.”
“You’re alright.”
“I just…” Roman swallows. “I don’t like people seeing me fail.”
“That’s understandable.” Janus sits up a little. “I don’t have to be there. You can practice on your own.”
“…I can?”
“Yes, you can.” Janus indicates the door of the Imagination. “I won’t be able to hear you in there. You can practice all you want.”
“Wait, you can’t hear what happens in the Imagination?”
“Sweetie, that place is nothing but lies, I’d go deaf.”
“Oh. I don’t want that.”
Janus chuckles. “No, I don’t either.”
——————
“Janus, what are you talking about?”
“Oh, come, let’s not be coy.” He spreads his arms. “We all know I’m the notorious villain around here.”
“Okay, just because you dress like a queer-coded villain doesn’t mean—“
“It’s my fault Virgil was so hated, it’s my fault Remus showed up at all.” He glances at Patton. “And I’m the reason you had a breakdown in the first place.”
“Janus, no—“
“I hurt you,” Janus says, “and Logan, and Virgil, and Remus.”
“Janus, we hurt you too.” Logan steps closer. “We’re the ones who didn’t bother to look past the queer-coded villain aesthetic—“
Virgil snorts.
“—and see you. You…you’ve only ever tried to help.”
Jans snorts. “And some help I’ve been.”
“You have,” Patton insists, “you made us see how much we really don’t know everything. We have to…be more honest. You helped with that. Thomas would be in a much worse-off place if you hadn’t done anything.”
Janus falters. “…you truly believe that?”
Virgil rolls his eyes. “Oh, get over here, you big drama queen.”
“Okay, you can talk—“
Remus squeals in delight as a group hug forms, throwing his arms around everyone he can reach. “Cat pile!”
Logan chuckles. “I suppose we have no choice.”
“You got that right, L, get down here.”
“Oops, sorry, sweetie.”
“Nah, I’m good.”
Patton sighs as they settle in on the floor, his head on Remus’s shoulder. “It’s nice to do this…”
As the sun begins to set.
“…with the whole family.”
Roman looks down at the tear-stained pile of papers in his hand. He sniffles and throws the top sheet away. He looks back up.
“Again.”
——————
The Mindscape is…finicky sometimes. When Thomas is in a particularly imaginative mood, the boundaries tend to…fluctuate.
So when their rooms jolt them out of bed to a house that looks much less like a house than it normally does, the Sides shrug and make their way to the Imagination to ride it out.
“Hey, L,” Virgil calls as they round the corner, “you got your headphones? I think I left mine.”
“Yes, I’ve got them. I’ve got an extra pair too.”
“You’re a lifesaver.”
Patton waves sleepily by the door. “Good morning, kiddos.”
“You okay, Pat? You don’t look so hot.”
“Wrong part of a nap.”
Virgil winces. “That is the worst.”
Patton stifles a yawn as Janus and Remus enter the hallway. “You guys seen Roman?”
They shake their heads.
“He must’ve gone in already.”
“Yeah, I didn’t see him at dinner last night, maybe he—“
Don’t deserve it.
They jump. Virgil whirls around as Roman’s voice rings out in the hallway. “What the fuck was that?”
“Langauge.”
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong and stupid and bad.
“Roro, this isn’t funny,” Remus says, raising his voice, “even if you gotta tell me how you did that.”
Logan glances around as the walls begin to thin. “We can’t stay here, we need to go in.”
“But that’s Roman,” Patton says, “we need to find him. If he gets stuck here—“
Worthless inconvenient burden who’s good for nothing.
“Oh, no,” Janus whispers, staring at the walls, “oh, no.”
“Janny, if you know what’s going on, you better start talking right the fuck now.”
It says something that Patton doesn’t even bother to chide Remus for his language.
“It’s Roman’s lies.”
“Roman’s what now?”
“The lies Roman tells himself,” Janus says, backing toward the Imagination, “you can hear them?”
“Yeah, no shit we can hear them,” Virgil says sharply, “now what the hell do you mean, Roman’s lies?”
“Exactly that,” Janus snaps, “these are the things Roman’s mind tells itself. They’re lies and if you can hear them too we need to get to the Imagination now.”
Remus growls but does as bid, yanking open the door and shoving the others into it. They spill onto a grassy field as the door closes and disappears behind him, a shining mark appearing on Remus’s wrist where a watch would be.
“There. I’ll know when it’s safe to go back.” He glares at Janus. “Which means you have plenty of time to explain. Now.”
Janus sighs. “Roman didn’t want to tell you.”
“A little late for that.”
“Janus,” Logan says, “please. We’re concerned about Roman’s wellbeing.”
“And if you think we won’t help, I swear to god—“
“Hey, you’re preaching to the choir here.” Janus holds his hands up. “I told Roman you’d want to help.”
“So why didn’t he believe it?”
At that, Janus glares at all of them. “I don’t know, Patton, why wouldn’t he believe it?”
“I—“
Before Patton can say anything, they hear voices down the hill.
More specifically, they hear their voices.
“What the…?”
Skulking down the hill reveals a small building. Remus gives them a shut-the-fuck-up-or-suffer-the-consequences look before carefully opening the door. Their eyes widen as they see a replica of their living room with all of them standing in it.
All of them…except Roman.
“What the hell is Princey doing here?”
Logan opens his mouth when the other Logan starts to talk instead.
They watch as the five of them start to…apologize to each other. Making amends, voicing things they would never have the courage to say out loud, only to be accepted and validated by the others. They all end in a massive pile on the floor, Patton whispering something about family before they dissolve into nothingness.
Silence.
“What,” Virgil murmurs, “the fuck.”
“He wants us to…apologize to each other?” Patton looks around. “Did we—I—um—“
“Roman could do anything with Imaginary versions of us,” Logan says softly, his eyes still glued to the carpet where they’d been, “and he…he chooses to do this?”
“Janny,” Remus almost growls, “you’re being really quiet.”
“Because I’m not used to being the honest expository one,” Janus snaps, “give me a second.”
He takes a deep, slow breath.
“Alright. I told Roman that you’d want to help him with this. He didn’t want to do it, so I suggested he practice.”
“But this isn’t him telling us shit.”
“I know that, Virgil, I just saw the same thing you did.”
“You gave Roman permission to try what he wanted,” Patton whispers in a horrified voice, “and he—he—“
“He didn’t even think of himself.” Remus’s grip tightens on his Morningstar. “Alright, where is he?”
“Sorry, I’m back,” Roman says suddenly, appearing next to them. Well, not next to them. He’s in a dark corner of the living room decidedly away from them. After a moment, he stops and scoffs at himself. “They’re not here, you idiot.”
It takes barely a second for all of them to exchange eye contact and decide what they’re going to do.
“Okay,” Roman mumbles, mostly to himself, “let’s try this again.”
He looks up and Logan rolls his shoulders back.
Showtime.
“Patton,” he starts off, “I owe you an apology. It was not my intention to blame you for everything that has gone wrong in the Mindscape and it was immature of me to do so.”
“Oh, kiddo, it’s okay. I’m sorry too. I didn’t mean to be so overbearing to all of you.”
“I didn’t mean to be a jerk.” They all turn and look at Virgil. “What? I didn’t!”
“We know, sweetie,” Janus says, bumping their shoulders together, “and for what it’s worth, I didn’t either.”
“I’m sorry,” Remus blurts out, “I’m sorry I’m gross and weird and—“
“Oh, just get over here,” Virgil mutters, opening his arms, “I—oof.”
“Cat pile!”
They all quickly move to hug each other, noting that Roman doesn’t even twitch. Logan exchanges a look with Patton. Patton nods.
“Hey, guys?”
“Mhm?”
“Yes?”
“Where’s Roman?”
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Roman stiffen.
“It doesn’t seem fair that we did all this with each other,” he continues, “and Roman’s not here too.”
“You’re right.” Logan sits up. “Has anyone seen him?”
“Nah.” Virgil scruffs a hand through his hair. “And, uh, don’t tell him I said this, but I’m kinda worried.”
Remus shuffles. “Me too.”
In the corner, Roman sits up a bit. He looks down at the paper in his lap. “No, no, no, this is wrong. This isn’t supposed to happen. I—I’m not…”
He swallows.
“…this isn’t what I scripted.”
Then Janus stands up and turns, seeing Roman’s head jerk up in surprise. He smiles softly. “There you are, sweetie.”
“No, no, no, no—“
He holds out his hand and Roman scrambles back. He raises an eyebrow. “Am I going to have to catch you?”
“Cut,” Roman mumbles as Janus starts to walk slowly toward him, “cut! That’s enough, draw the curtain, cut!”
Janus reaches out and gently wraps his arms around him. “Gotcha.”
“No—what—how—“
Janus just holds him as Roman starts to push at his chest and shoulders, growing more and more frantic.
“No—this is wrong, you shouldn’t be—I shouldn’t be—“
“Why not, Roman?” Roman’s eyes snap to Logan. “Why shouldn’t you be comforted?”
Roman swallows. “Because—because—“
When he can’t finish the sentence, Logan raises an eyebrow and comes closer. “That doesn’t seem like a good reason.”
It’s gentle, barely even a chide, but Roman flinches as though Logan struck him.
“Of course we’re here for you, Princey,” Virgil mumbles, “you’re…y’know, important.”
“Of course you’re important, kiddo,” Patton says even as Roman starts to mutter denials, “and it’s our fault if you don’t believe it.”
“No—no, no, this is—this is—“
“Janny, let him go.”
“What? Remus, I—“
“Let him go.” Remus gives him a nod. “Trust me.”
Janus’s chest clenches but he does as bid, carefully releasing his grip on Roman who stumbles away, falling to the floor and scooting backward.
He doesn’t get far.
Remus pounces on him, flattening them both to the ground as Roman yelps in surprise. He isn’t able to struggle away as Remus glares down at him.
“...Re?”
“Hey, Roro,” Remus mutters, “you wanna tell me what’s going on?”
“…no?”
He huffs. “At least you’re honest about it.”
When Roman flinches, hard, he gentles, leaning down to rest their foreheads together.
“Roro, why’re you being all sad by yourself? Why aren’t you letting us help you?”
“Because the real you never would,” Roman snaps, “okay? I’m…I’m just preparing for it.”
“What do you mean, the ‘real me?’”
“The version of you that exists outside the Imagination. The version of you who isn’t here right now.”
“Those are two different things, Roro.”
The moment realization crosses Roman’s face, the walls shudder. “…you’re really here?”
“Not just me,” Remus says as gently as he can.
“You…you’re all…”
“I told you,” Janus says softly, “I told you they’d want to help.”
“Why—how—“
In response, Remus just holds up his wrist.
“…Thomas in a funk again?”
“Mhm. Which means we’ve got time for you.”
“…do I get a say in this?”
“No,” Remus says sweetly, “you just get to be hugged.”
Before Roman can ask exactly what that means, there’s an exuberant pile of Patton on top of him as Remus flops onto his back. Virgil chuckles and there’s weight over his legs, keeping him there on the floor. He looks up at Logan who ruffles his hair and smiles, smiles at him.
“Hello, little one,” he murmurs, “you’ve been keeping secrets, haven’t you?’
There’s no condemnation in Logan’s voice but he tears up all the same.
“Shh, shh, sweetie,” Janus says, taking one of Roman’s hands, “it’s alright now.”
“I don’t understand—I don’t—I don’t under—understand.”
“Well,” Logan says softly, “you are suffering from years of emotional neglect and are having trouble asking and receiving support. We are currently attempting to support you as you deal with that, and as physical touch is a primary way that you allow yourself to be comforted, we are obliging.”
Janus hums and there are other various noises of agreement.
“…but why?”
“Because you deserve to be comforted,” Janus murmurs, “and to be helped if you’re hurt.”
…but I don’t believe you.
“That’s okay. We’ll be here until you do.”

The lies don’t go away. Not quickly, not slowly. They get rarer and rarer, but they never disappear entirely.
But that’s alright. The brain is a muscle, it has reflexes just like every other one. If it learns something young, or it learns it enough times, it will come to rely on those pathways whenever it is disturbed. It doesn’t make it wrong, it doesn’t make it bad, it doesn’t make it stupid.
As with most things, the first thought is often what is taught. Something ingrained. Something learned.
The second thought is what determines you.

There was something exhilarating about being a criminal. Something that domestic life just couldn’t reach by going sky diving (”Nope, no way, I’m not getting in a plane to jump out of it. Are you fucking insane?”) or bungee jumping (”Love maybe you should venture away from the dropping from tall heights? You’re giving Virgil a conniption.”)
Why Virgil was more okay with robbing working their way up into being word class criminals that stole from the rich and donated to charities while they kept just enough to be comfortable in whatever country Janus happened to fancy at the time than he was bungee jumping or sky diving or zip lining considering much more was on the line, Roman wasn’t sure. But he sure as hell wasn’t going to complain when he could look at Virgil grinning into his coffee while they listened to the news.
Being called “uncatchable” and “unpredictable” certainly was an ego boost, and Virgil was adorable when he got cocky.
“Morning love,” Janus said, finally emerging from their shared room with silk yellow robes draped around his shoulders, a soft, enchanted smile decorating his lips.
How could Roman resist the urge to kiss it off his face? He couldn’t, and when he pulled back to return to the cut fruit Virgil had set in front of him, Janus’ smile was just that much more infatuated.
“Mornin’ Jan. You see the necklace Roman insisted we get?” Virgil asked, setting a strawberry crepe in front of his husband (they weren’t really married, but they liked the titles) and leaning over to peck his cheek.
“I did. I take that to mean last night’s heist was successful then?”
Roman beamed, swallowing the honeydew in his mouth before he spoke.
“Yes! Went off without a hitch. Every time I’m reminded of Virgil’s history with computers I get a little more in love with him.”
Virgil scoffed, rolling his eyes even as he had the smallest of smiles at the praise.
“You just think it’s hot when I get through security as if I set the codes myself.”
“That is hot, dear,” Janus said, giving Virgil a smug look that had him flustered into silence.
Roman snorted, shoving another chunk of fruit into his mouth while he tried to figure out what else Virgil was making.
Honestly, being a thief that others envied, getting to feel on top of the moon when a new charity that desperately needed it got the money it deserved, the adoration he felt when he got to give Janus a new gift, it was the life.
And Roman loved getting to share it with both of his husbands. Virgil who got through security and helped Roman to be more subtle. Janus who planned everything out to the minute so they could get in and out and stay alive.
It was the best feeling in the world and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

What is Home? Epilogue
Masterpost
Ships: Intrulogical, Anaroceit
“Good morning Ro! Good morning Rem!” Patton greets his friends with a wave and a smile.
“Well, Lo, Emile, and Janus are,” the pale boy explains, “Virgil and Remy aren’t here yet. I think they’re getting the coffee for everyone.”
Roman smiles and waves back, “Good morning Pat. Are the others in the back?”
“Alright. Imma go say hi to the others, call me when Vee and Remy get here,” Remus says as he starts to walk to the back.
“Alrighty! I’ll do that!” The blue-haired boy promises before turning back to Roman and starting a conversation with them.
Remus gets to the back and smiles before jokingly saying, “Good morning guys! I’m here to bless you with my presence!”
Janus rolls xyr eyes, “Good morning to you too bitch.”
“Jan, language,” Emile says with a giggle, “Good morning Rem. Is Ro in the front with Patton?”
Remus looks at Logan who didn’t greet zem before mumbling, “Uh, yeah. They’re waiting for Virgil and Remy to arrive.”
Emile and Janus share a look before nodding at each other.
“Well, imma go greet and talk to my beloved,” Janus speaks up with a hum, “Wanna come with me, Emile?”
“Yeah, come on!”
The two of them walk out, closing the door behind them and leaving Logan and Remus alone to talk. Something everyone knows they have to do. After all, the two of them still have to decide what they want their relationship to be.
“Lo? You okay?” The taller teen asks, a worried expression on zir face.
The two of them stare at each other for a minute, letting the world melt away around them. They just stood there admiring one another. Both of them happy with the decision they’ve made. And both of them ready to start what they hope will be an amazing relationship.
Logan sighs and folds their arms, “Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry for not telling you good morning. I was spacing out slightly.”
Remus simply nods, unsure of what to say next.
Logan thinks for a minute or so before speaking again, “Have you thought about my confession. I know things have been crazy lately and I wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t made up your mind yet, but I just want to ask.”
The curly-haired teen plaus with their sleeve as they blush lightly, “I have. And I have a response to your confession and feelings.”
“Oh, okay,” the other responds nervously, “So, what’s your decision?”
Remus blushes deeper and glances down before taking a deep breath, “I feel the same way about you and I want to try out a romantic relationship with you.”
“Really?!” Logan blushes deeply and clears their throat to stay calm, “I’m so happy you feel the same way. And I’m ready to start dating whenever you are.”
The taller teen smiles, “Well, you better take me somewhere nice this weekend then.”
The dark haired teen chuckles, “I promise I will, Rem.”
“Rem! Lo! The coffees are here!”
The two of them are suddenly snapped back to reality by Patton’s voice.
“Alright! We’ll be there in a bit!” Remus yells back before smiling at Logan and holding out a hand for them, “Ready to go?”
Logan blushes and takes zir hand as they smile back, “Yeah, let’s go. I desperately need my morning coffee.”
And after a chuckle from Remus the two of them start walking to the front to start a day of work and hanging out with friends.
The twins ready to start a day in their new home. A real home with those they love around them.

Hello!

C-can i request Anarociet but with Tiny Roman plz?
I Can Do This
Roman placed his room nervously, talking to himself as he waited for it to be time to go. "It's just a sleepover, nothing special. Yes it's with the two most popular giants at school that just so happen to be my crushes, but that's fine- everything is fine it's all going to be fine-" he kept mumbling that it would be fine to himself. "I can do this."
Earlier that day Roman remembered the conversation that had sparked this idea in the first place.
"Roman, I was wondering if you would like to spend the night at my house tonight" Janus had asked during lunch. Catching Roman completely off guard and flustering him. "It would be just the tw-"
"The three of us!" Virgil had cut in suddenly. "Because I'm going to be there too." As the emo said this he had sent a small glare over at Janus. Roman barely noticed the glaring contest the giants were having, as he looked back and forth between the two of them in a blushing mess.
"Y- yes!" Roman exclaimed out of nowhere, drawing both of his crushes' attention. "I- I mean, y- yeah." He mentally cursed himself for his gay pinning.
And now Roman was here. Panicking in his room as he waited until it was time to spend the night with two hot giants. Two attractive giants that were very popular and in no way felt anything romantic for him.
"I can't do this." Roman admitted before dramatically collapsing face first into his bed. "Why did I agree to this?" He asked himself.
"Because you're a gay simp who doesn't know how to ask someone out." The familiar voice caused Roman to jump and spin. around, having not expected a response.
"Remus-" Roman panicked, seeing his brother standing in his open door way. "How long have you been standing there-"
"Long enough." Remus cackled softly. "Look, it's not like it's a date." Remus shrugged before hopping onto Roman's bed next to him.
"But what if is one," Roman started spiralling. "You've seen how they act- it's like they are a couple with how much they argue - what if they know! What if they're just trying to mess with me- what if-" Roman was suddenly cut off by Remus covering his mouth with a hand.
"Blah blah blah- okay, one, Janus and Virgil aren't dating, and number two, neither of them would ever play with someone's emotions. Ever. And thirdly," Remus paused, he'd been friends with those giants for awhile now, and was well aware of their pinning for Roman, especially of their rivalry and how they kept sabotaging each other so that Ro wouldn't end up dating the other. But he couldn't tell his Ro-bro that, not yet. "And thirdly you're my brother, so you know the ways of getting dick, as I have taught you well!"
Roman just looked at him for a moment before laughing. "You're disgusting!" He pushed Remus off the bed.
"You know it!" Remus smiled. "But seriously, you better?"
"Better." Roman responded.
"Ready?"
"Not in a million years."
"Well, it's just a sleepover." Remus shrugged, and before he could say anything else, Roman's alarm went off, significantly it was time to go.
☆☆☆
Roman got off the bus on the giant side of town nervously. "It's just a sleepover." He repeated his brother's words to himself quietly as looked upon the giant house he would be spending the night at.
Walking up to the house and it's door was easy, it was just not chickening out that was the hard part. I can do this I can do this I can do this- Roman kept repeated over and over again in his head. It's just a sleepover, he reasoned, nothing more. Then, when he finally reached the doorbell- the regulated human doorbell that is- he took a deep breath, and rang the doorbell.
There was some loud shuffling that followed, with several loud bangs, and whispered "I've got it-" "no, this is my house I'll-" "he's my cru-" "mine too-" "shut up!" that could be heard. Then suddenly the door swung open making Roman jump in surprise. Inside first Roman saw Virgil holding the doorknob with one hand while his other arm was preoccupied with holding back Janus.
"Hey, Princey." Virgil breathed out with an almost goofy looking smile as Janus pouted. Even when they were giants towering over him, Roman couldn't help but to fund them adorable like this, and found himself giggling at their antics.
"Heya Emo Nightmare and Dr. Jeckle." Roman smirked, using the nicknames he called them most the time. "Mind letting me in?"
Virgil and Janus both blushed, not that Roman noticed as was usual. They both had to take a moment to collect themselves after seeing that smirk that never failed to melt either of them.
"O- of course!" Janus was the first to snap out of it, and was happy to push Virgil out of the way. To which Virgil cussed quietly and flipped him off from behind the door, not wanting to upset Roman. "Here." Janus knelt down and offered a hand to the adorable human.
"Thanks Jan!" Roman smiled as he climbed onto their hand happily. Virgil glared at Janus, and would have growled if it weren't for Roman being there.
Janus ignored Virgil as he carried Roman inside, the emo shutting the door behind them. "My parents won't be home for the weekend, so we can do whatever you would like, Roman."
"Yep, they laundered money, and now they're on the run." Virgil smirked teasingly at Janus as he made the BMC reference that got Roman to bounce with joy.
"Either way" Janus gritted out as he glared at Virgil. "We have the house to ourselves." It was by then that they had gotten to Janus' room, where he gently set Roman down on the bed before sitting down himself on the floor, with Virgil following suit.
With that, they commenced with the sleepover. They did the usual teenage things, like playing games, talking, and finally binging Disney for the rest of the night (and Janus and Virgil both claiming that it was their idea and that they were the one who rented the movies, not the other).
"Huh, it looks like we're running out of popcorn..." Roman had finally mumbled at some point around midnight.
"I'll get it!" Both Janus and Virgil said at the exact same time, causing then to glare at each other.
"Virgil, I need to talk to you for a second." Janus started, and before Virgil could say anything he added. "Alone. While we're getting popcorn, okay?" Then before Roman could say anything both the giants left the room.
"What are you doing?" Janus whispered to Virgil once they were in the kitchen. "I had this whole night planned out! I was finally going to-"
"You think I didn't know?" Virgil looked at Janus with emotion. "I- I just need more time- you can't just- just take him-"
"Virgil." Janus placed a hand onto Virgil's shoulder. "Neither of us are getting anywhere like this." Virgil looked at him for a while silently, before sighing.
"I know..."
Back in Janus' room, Roman was getting worried. Had he messed up? Did he do something wrong? Why else would they need to talk alone unless Roman was the problem? His mind kept supplying him with these worrying thoughts... until he thought about Remus. It was a gross thought about his brother and a little invasive but... it reminded him that he was small, he could find out what was going on. So, he would do just that. "I can do this." He told himself.
"We keep trying and trying to one up each other and it's getting no where!" Janus exclaimed.
"I know!" Virgil growled out in frustration. "It was easier when it was just us and Remus- why did he have to have a brother-" he groaned.
"Exactly- this rivalry has gone too far, we should just tell him-" Janus started.
"-No!" Virgil cutt him off. "It could make him upset or worse, mad." Janus paused.
"At least we would be telling the truth..."
"Janus?" Virgil looked at his old friend worried, "You never want to tell the truth."
"This is... different." Janus paused. "Roman is so wonderful, and amazing, and god he is too talented for his own good" Virgil chuckled at that.
"Yeah, he just lights up a room. And his little smile..." Virgil blushed.
"God we both just melt don't we?" Janus added making Virgil chuckle sadly.
"We're a mess..."
"Yeah... but a mess that loves Roman" Janus said, causing Virgil to blush even more.
"Yep." The emo added, popping the p.
"You what?" Both of the giants jumped as Roman was suddenly in the kitchen with them, having heard the entire thing.
"W- w- well- well- uh-" Virgil sputtered.
"R- Roman-" Janus said surprised and flustered, not able to get words out any better then Virgil.
Roman just looked back and forth between them, before it dawned on him, and he started laughing at how dumb he was- well, how dumb they all were. Bith giants stopped when Roman started to laugh and looked down at the human nervously.
"Uh, R- Roman?" Virgil started, worried, as Janus just looked at Roman nervously.
"Bith you, c'mere." Roman said, to which both giants looked terrified (which was hilarious to Roman) before kneeling down to be at level with him. "Closer." Roman commented, making them lean down more. "A little more, I need to be able to reach your lips." Roman smirked as he made two giants blush, but they obliged.
In turn Roman walked up to each giant, first Virgil then Janus, and kissed their top lip.
"I love you too!" Roman exclaimed with a bright smile, that promptly killed both of the giants.
I did it.

Roman has piercings and he usually wears those colorful resin-like studs. He usually wears a red one on his right ear and the color of the person he likes on the left.
