#an uncorrupted mairon au

(there was a post making the rounds about writing smutty drabbles for people to read while a lot of Americans are presumably surrounded by family for the Thanksgiving holiday-- and, well, this is longer than 100 words and it isn't smut, but here's Mairon/Artanis for y'all from the Uncorrupted Mairon AU:)
ETA: an AO3 link!
-
Mairon gasps apologies into Artanis's mouth, but she barely hears them for the ringing in her ears.  More important words fill all the hollow places fear had carved inside her, relief flaring like fire over his assurances: Yes, of course I'm coming with you, I won't leave you now, not ever.
Outside of this room in Tirion, the Noldor shudder in fear and dismay, but Artanis clutches at Mairon and weeps over how her joy blazes in the dark.
"I made silver rings," Mairon says when the necessity for air means she must stop kissing him.  Tears track down his cheeks too and she can't help but litter kisses on his face until his mouth curves into a smile, though he still looks rueful.  "I meant for them to be prototypes.  They aren't perfect—"
"Show them to me," she laughs, now realizing what the half-fond, half-despairing look Findaráto had kept shooting Mairon's way has meant for all her months of wondering.  Mairon untangles himself from her grasp to bring a small wooden box out of his desk and there they are in his hands: two silver betrothal rings gleaming in candlelight, defiant against the shadows and the despair that had struck her heart at the idea of leaving Aman without him.
She holds her right hand out so he can slip her ring on her finger, a band reminiscent of ocean waves and ship rope, Telerin design in Noldorin custom—perfect, even for all Mairon's protests.  When she says so, he shakes his head but puts the ring's twin on his own hand.
"I never meant to make you doubt my commitment.  I was going to do it all in the proper order when they were made right," he says, the words flowing out of him fast, all his secrets cut loose.
"When you were satisfied," she replies, pushing him onto the daybed of his quarters and climbing into his lap.  What an impossible word, satisfied.  She shoves her hands into the russet waves of his hair and thrills at the sound he makes, hungry. "You would have kept me waiting a hundred more years."
"No," he groans, gathering her up in his arms.  Even through the linen of her dress, she can feel the warmth of his body and she wants him closer.  She rolls her hips into the hard lines of him and he falls back, taking her down with him flat onto the bed.  "Yes.  All right.  I never would have been satisfied, but you deserve—"
She kisses him until he stops talking nonsense, until they're both gasping and laughing and maybe crying a little still, but when she says, "Bind yourself to me," he says yes.  Yes, of course.
He knows the vows to make, has learned every word passed down among the Eldar.  He murmurs them reverently into the skin of her throat, the curve of her breast, the softness of her inner thigh.
When they reach the end of the ritual and there is only the part Eärwen and Arafinwë had told them no one could teach them, that they would have to discover for themselves—Artanis opens her mouth to say something, she doesn't know, nerves overwhelming her, but Mairon holds her close, and says, “I know.”
He sounds just as loving and lost as she is for a moment—and then he hums a few notes of a Song she has never heard before, but recognizes immediately.  It’s theirs.

I am taking this opportunity to affectionately bully you further: 💬❤️
OKAY I'LL PLAY.
YOURS FIRST, tho, from the Uncorrupted Mairon AU (fell in love with the fire long ago) that has given me Feelings i did not ask for.
Mairon blows out a breath. Artanis whirls out of Aikanáro’s reach, her feet light upon earth packed down by the feet of so many—Mairon first thinks of the word warriors, but then corrects himself to athletes. There is no war here in Aman.
Just a warmonger, says a foreboding voice in his mind. “Is Melkor still visiting the Forge?” he asks, careful to keep his voice even, as if he doesn’t want to burst into flames at the thought.
“He’s come a few times since you fled,” Curumo says, always precise, choosing that word—fled—with purpose.
Mairon has no patience now for the slow but sharp cutting at his defenses. “What do you want, Curumo.”
“Just a few answers. Why you ran away. When you’re coming back. Call it the concern of a colleague, if you’d like.”
A colleague.
So, I picked this passage because one of the things I love most about your writing (in general) is that you are EXQUISITELY precise with the words you choose. Like, if all the words you write are like little arrows firing, ALL OF THEM hit the bullseye right on the nose, every time. It’s magical. And MADDENING. (Like how. HOWWWWW?) I feel like this passage PERFECTLY encapsulates that same kind of linguistic precision. The distinction between “athletes” and “warriors,” the precise use of “fled,” “COLLEAGUE.” (perpetual middle finger to Curumo, zero apologies.) Anyway, I love it.
Annnd, okay, here’s mine (from the Adar origins fic we’re not talking about, except i guess we definitely are now, Awake, Arise or be Forever Fall’n ):
Yet the seed of grief was ever at the heart of his being: it had taken root there, deep at his core. And now, here at last, summoned by the waters of Sirion and the golden light that surrounds him, it breaks through everything that had been placed over it, fully formed: not a tender sapling, but a hardened, gnarled trunk. He holds himself together by the merest thread, fearing that the height and breadth of it might tear his body completely asunder.
It’s far and away the passage of which I’m most proud in this fic. One of the rare times I’ve felt like I nailed both the image AND the execution. And as an avowed “grief bitch,” there are more than a few self-inserted feelings here, so it writing it felt like quite a personal moment, all told, within a completely fantasy story.

10, 17, 21 — for the fic asks! And for the fic-specific question, let’s go with Litost.
10. How do you decide what to write?
I typically fixate on the End Game before I even realize the beginning of the fic leading up to the End Game. One big event, a penultimate moment that draws me in - that I, as a reader, would die for in a fic if I was reading. Once I have that in my head, I typically write a fic based around that Penultimate Moment. This is how I usually have my fics mapped out long before the end and can guess a fair chapter amount in advance with my outline. I already know what I'm working up to, and the journey is the road there, but I know exactly where I'm going. Some roads diverge from the path, but in general it's not a huge difference from my original vision. I used to hate writing without knowing what I was writing up to?? So, this is advice I give to budding writers: figure out your End Game in advance. Know what you're writing towards. Endless fics that never get completed aren't any fun. This is why I make a sufficient outline before I even start writing.
17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?
An Uncorrupted!Mairon and Artanis courtship fic set in Valinor. It's the biggest reason why I haven't read any of the other Valinor-based fics because I don't want to be influenced by something similar to the idea brewing in my head that I wrote in Though the Gods and the Years Relent, Shall Be, but I haven't expanded it into something bigger yet . . . because I have two current WIPs already going on, and one of them is huge.
21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in [insert fic], what would it be?
Ah, a missing scene for Litost? I can't answer that without spoiling things that haven't been answered yet! So, I have to keep silent! There is one scene in the midst of Chapter 10: Light of All Lights that I could have written, but Galadriel wasn't present for it, so I never wrote it. And then I almost didn't include Chapter 15: Yours to Command, but I added it. And now I'm adding another unexpected, unplanned chapter. Chapter 21 is going to be another one of those, yes. So, I guess I've been adding in all the "missing scenes" as I go! That's why you don't have to stick exactly to your outline. Expand, if needed! Include those juicy extras!

😘🍺 (in the 'Uncorrupted smith of Aulë and Crown Prince' au perhaps~?)
Send 😘🍺 to drunkenly kiss my muse!
Fëanároreturned the kiss enthusiastically, wrapping his arms around Mairon and backing him up against the wall, leaning most of his body weight onto him. He felt lovely and warm, and he purred happily into the embrace.
“Naughty maia,” he giggled, a little tipsy himself from the wine that had been flowing so freely all evening.
“Sneaking away from your master...kissing the Crown Prince like this~ What would Aulë say?”

Tolkien Brain Rot is so real. I swear I'll be doing something mundane like cleaning my living space and stop dead in my tracks like, "Findis is an Oracle and is plagued by foresight which is why she avoids her family in Tirion" or, today's thought, "Glorfindel is the brother of Elenwë which is why he's a Vanya aligned with the Exiles".

Early days of the Noldor settling into Beleriand before the Quenya ban, the absolute SCANDALIZED gossip spreading like wildfire in the ranks of the Noldor and the Sindar in opposite directions about polygamy.
A Noldo like, “she told me she has a husband AND a wife and they are NOT the same genderfluid person and are both living?????  No, I’m serious, it’s not a mistranslation!”
The Sinda like, “he told me about this ruling the Valar made about an elf trying to have a second marriage after his first wife died-- the Statute of Finwë and Míriel-- oh, yes, it must have been that Finwë, I suppose-- Anyway, there are such strict restrictions about this, it is truly the most bizarre thing I have ever heard!”

fic: grant a name to a buried flame
Mablung comes around and throws his arm over Celeborn’s shoulder, a heavy hand gripping his arm.  “Cheer up, mellon nîn.  I’m sure if your lady and her husband objected to your feelings—which are obvious since you ran away immediately after blurting out her nickname—Lord Mairon could have incinerated you in the blink of an eye.”
“Or,” Beleg adds, helpfully, “he could have caught up to us days ago.  We’re good scouts, but surely not good enough to evade a Maia.”
“I have a name for him, too,” Celeborn groans—terrible to admit, but also a relief.  At least only his comrades are here to witness it, instead of all the gossips in Menegroth.  “It’s Halbrand.”
Or, Celeborn has been carrying a torch for Artanis and Mairon since the Mereth Aderthad.
Read it here on AO3!
Part of my Uncorrupted Mairon AU which is me chasing a thought experiment with Mairon seeking out Ossë instead of running straight into Melkor's arms in Almaren, then falling in love with and marrying Artanis, and then, you know.  The First Age happens.  Galadriel has two hands and two husbands.
Heavily inspired by Rings of Power.

Permanently jumping up and down and screaming over the Mairon AU :D
I LOVE THE AU. It's still very much living constantly in my brain!!!! I've been thinking a lot recently about Eönwë and Mairon in the Noontide of Valinor era, so here is a little bit that I've just written:
-
Valarin isn't often heard on the streets of Tirion, the Maiar who visit the Noldor there being too polite, perhaps, to use a tongue that makes their nerves jangle like bells and their back teeth ache. Mairon has been living among elves exclusively for years now, using his language only briefly and carefully with Artanis, who wishes to share it with him as a gift.
Mairon is methodical, deliberate by nature. He keeps a firm hand on his power, especially while among the people he loves-- his family, his Arafinwëans.
His control slips when Eönwë tells him Melkor is being given free reign of Aman.
The ground shakes and his voice rings like a hammer strike gone too hard, steel shattering beneath the blow, sparks and shrapnel scattered points of pain. "Those fools," he spits, heedless of Eönwë's ruffled feathers and the affront in his eagle-sharp eyes-- what Mairon says is true. "He has blinded them, Manwë most of all! How can they let him free?"

I was trying to focus on AKB notes the other day (session was good btw!) so of course my wayward brain took a detour to Doriath and I have some thoughts about Mairon and Melian. I don't think they are fond of each other at all-- I think Melian tolerates his presence in Doriath in no small part because her children like him and are very interested in talking to a Maia who is NOT their mother (btw Daeron as younger brother of Lúthien has always been my headcanon) and Mairon is delighted to talk to them and learn about their lives and powers, especially in Song.
But anyway, I think Melian and Mairon have history in Almaren, maybe-- like maybe Melian knew about Mairon passing information along to Melkor and was absolutely certain Mairon was going to run away-- and then never trusted him even when he didn't. But it's funny that Melian herself disappears from Valinor and makes a life in Beleriand for an elf-- something that Mairon also does, not knowing that Melian has done so first.
I think there must be a good amount of apprehension about marrying an elf and taking their people to be your own. Not in the sense of doubting your own feelings and level of commitment, but in-- can I be what they need? What does it mean to bind myself to one of the Children of Ilúvatar? Can we actually bind ourselves? I have considerable Power, can I protect them (from myself, from the world)? Can we have children, if we want them???
The first time Mairon hears that runaway Melian is married to the King of Doriath and that they have two kids is a wild revelation. I think Melian is also pretty shocked to hear about Mairon having married an elvish princess, though maybe not surprised he finally did run away from the Valar after all.

There's actually an AU of my AU in my brain that I am not mean enough to write where Melkor pins Mairon to a wall in Tirion and croons, my bright thing, you must remember all you've done in my service, and Halbrand wakes up from the dream of having done it all differently in the beginning, having never gone over, having been gifted love and a family among the elves -- but no. No. He is Sauron after all.

It’s my birthday today!  In case you missed it yesterday, I have posted a ficlet roundup for the random bits on Tumblr that I didn’t want to lose to the ether for the Uncorrupted Mairon AU.
it's not from what we run that drums
Ficlets so far:
About Apologies - “He hurt you.  Or at least, he was the one who let Melkor into the door.”
Family Party - Hopefully none of Mairon's absolute bewilderment is showing on his face.
Tracked Down - "You're just the same as you've always been."
Helcaraxë Fragments - Everything is so cold.
There’s Kinslaying (and Kinslaying) - What is more bloodshed to this already soaked ground?
Silver Clam - Celeborn insists on fighting in the War of Wrath.
Read it here on AO3 (locked to logged-in users).
Everything about the AU can also be found via these Relevant Tags on my Tumblr: an Uncorrupted Mairon AU, fell in love with the fire, and rough drafts.

3, 5, 11 for the writer ask!
3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
OH that one is DIFFICULT to choose. My favorite???? I do still love so many of them. If more people ask this question, I think my answer might change, but FOR NOW, I'll say that I think out of storms is one of my best. I still love my Tauriel. :)
5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?
LMAO, okay the Outlander Claire/Jamie/time-traveler!Frank AU because the Outlander fandom scares me, but let me tell you, the idea of Frank ALSO time traveling and everyone having to deal with Claire having two husbands simultaneously AND ALSO Frank looking like Black Jack Randall in a way that could be weird but also weirdly beneficial in getting Jamie out of prison-- ANYWAY, I have no time to write it, no desire to rewatch Outlander enough to get it onto the page even in bullet point form, but please know that this AU lives in a corner of my brain and every so often I look at it fondly. What an idea. I wish someone would be infected by the same fever dream. I don't even know how to go about looking for that kind of AU, if it already exists. BUT I WISH IT EXISTED.
11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?
I do! But it mostly consists of video game soundtrack music and music in languages I do not speak so that I don't get distracted by the words while writing. Anyway, I do have a Mairon of Aman playlist on Spotify. :)

I was tagged by @baddybaddyadardaddy (remains a hysterically funny side-blog name, friend) in a Last Sentence Tag Game and I know this will be fun for you:
“Dare I ask if I am also named with love?” he says, cupping Celeborn’s cheek.
:)
Tagging @incognitajones, @rain-sleet-snow, @aadmelioraa, and anyone else who is currently writing and wants to do this.  Yes, you!
