What fans say:
Ponyo:
It's a Ghibli movie, and my favorite scene is Ponyo running to Sosuke's house
It just has such cosy vibes and it reminds me of childhood.
Childhood favorite :) I rented it from my local library a lot, it was always the first thing i wanted. Being a studio Ghibli film, it's very beautiful and I love all the water involved. It's a favorite I share with my little sister now!
Song of the Sea:
The animation and backgrounds are so pretty! The music is great! It tells a nice story using the fantastical elements to tell a relatable story about grief and how it effects families! It’s Irish!
It has a big fluffy dog, seals of various sorts, and VERY GOOD MUSIC.
Irish selkies and gorgeous animation
In love w the animation style. Plus selkies are rad 👀
Beautiful art, one of my fave Selkie stories of all media.
It is beautifully animated, I just love the paper book feel to it! The mythical character designs make me swoon like a himbo husband for his lovely wife. The story is about a family tragedy and the characters dynamics make it so no one in the family is really a bad guy, just not great choices. I like how the brother has to get over himself for his sister and how she stays with their family even with their faults. It just a charming little story I found again from my childhood.

I have a copy of Song of the Sea with the Irish dub (which sounds identical to the original English dub) but I only recognized a few words. I wish it had Irish subtitles too.

Hi! I'd like to recommend these movies (completely different from one another)
The Fall (2006) - dir. Tarsen Singh
Cedar Rapids (2011)* dir. Miguel Arteta
Song of the Sea/Amhrán na Mara (2014) - animated film by Tomm Moore
(I had a bit of a hard time rewatching it lately because it co-stars Anna Heche)
Oooo... Thank you for these! I watched and enjoyed The Fall long ago. Time to rewatch and review it! Cedar Rapids is unknown to me. This will be a treat! I have reviewed Song Of The Sea (and its trilogy siblings) some time back here. Wolfwalkers is still the best of the bunch.
Sorry to hear about Anna Heche. You must have liked her works a lot.

List of TV/Movies to watch that have that ‘Animal Crossing’ feel while we wait for NH!
For me, everything recommended below gives me the same feeling I get when I play Animal Crossing, that warm, calm, peaceful feeling. I thought I would make the list for others to enjoy, while we all wait for March 2020 together!
Tumblr media
Find on YouTube/Online
Obviously, the original Animal Crossing movie comes first! Was made during the early era of AC and has a strong nostalgic feel to it. Reminds me of simpler times, and great to see some of our faves in a feature film.
-
Tumblr media
Found Online/DVD
Honestly, I could probably put any Ghibli film on this list and it will work, but there is something about this often forgotten film about a community of Tanuki Raccoon Dogs turned eco warriors that gets me feeling all warm inside!
-
It’s a bit of a long post, please click to continue reading!

Found on Youtube
Babar is a classic French/Canadian children’s cartoon from the 1990′s about the lovely royal household of Elephant Kingdom. A surprisingly profound backstory, (including his Mom being SHOT DEAD by a hunter) most episodes revolve around King Babar teaching his young children using stories from his childhood. He was invented in 1931!

Hilda is a stunning and beautiful children’s story based in a semi magical world full of mythological creatures, ancient beings and the Cub Scouts! Very new with amazing animation and acting. Very strong feelings of wonder and curiosity. So cute and surprisingly deep!
-
Tumblr media
Found on Netflix
Similar to Hilda, wonderful animation, and totally unique storytelling, isn’t afraid to get a bit scary and very magical. Lots of talking animals and getting lost in the forest. Fantastical music too.

Amhrán na Mara is made by an Irish Animation Studio called Cartoon Saloon, everything they make is visually stunning, some of the most unique styles I’ve seen in film. Lovely, magical storytelling with strong themes of home, belonging and Celtic history and mythology. Lots of cute animal/human friendships!

The original 1990 Moomins tv show has a special quality to it that is hard to describe. Having all the lovely residents of Moomin Valley just living their lives and contemplating life though both lighthearted and scary storylines is just too much, I want to live in Moomin Valley forever!
-
Tumblr media
Found on Netflix
This is a bit different, but is super super relaxing. People outside of the UK may not know Caroline Quentin? I want her to be my best friend. She is so friendly, down to earth and funny that when her and her architect friend Pierres travel the world, visiting the amazing houses super rich people get built for them, it’s extremely satisfying to watch. All these homes are beautiful in their own way and designed for relaxation, really interesting to see

Cute animal co-existing in a big and varied population? Check. Main character constantly questioning her purpose in life, while developing intense coping strategies to survive the misogynistic, monotonous and overbearing work place culture that is constant in the day to day working life of many millennials living in Japan? ...err...check?
-
Tumblr media
Found on Netflix
Modest Heroes is a compilation of three short films on Netflix made by Japanese animation studio Ponoc. Really interesting and sweet stories that capture the home and daily life of three extremely different set of characters. Strong Ghibli vibes. Go watch!
-

This slow, relaxing, quiet show focuses only on a handful of characters. It’s stop motion and looks amazing. Very cute set decoration makes you want to live in that tiny flat with them. Very satisfying to watch, even if the main human character can come across as quite depressed at times. Super super cute!
Got any to add to the list? Here’s to March 20th 2020! Enjoy!

D'fhéach mé ar an scannán Amhrán na Mara le mo deartháir mar bhí an Amhrán na Farraige i m'intinn agus rinne mé dearmad comh áilleacht atá sé! Bhí na scéalta agus na carachtair sa scannán go hiontach agus thaitin mé an stíl freisin...
Ceapaim ba mhaith liom a bheith ag tarraingt tar éis ea...

Hi! So I'm a big fan of the Song of the Sea film, and noticed you tagged your recent post about it as "Amhran na Mara" (forgive me for the lack of fadas). I've seen the film and its main song referred to as "Amhran na Farraige" before, and I know Farraige means "Sea". I was wondering if there's a difference between Farraige and Mara, or if there's a certain time you would use one over the other?
Hello there 😊
Short answer, they're synonyms. Mara is the genitive form of muir (sea) and the same meaning can be attributed to farraige. Likewise, both farraige mhór and muir mhór mean ocean/open sea.
Long answer, I have no idea why they chose a different title for the Irish language version, what is sure is that the song came first along with the film and that for some reason the official title in Irish is Amhrán na Mara.
Tumblr media
My guess is that farraige was specifically chosen for its length to fit the song's line (Colm Ó Snodaigh/Kíla wrote the lyrics and helped write the tune), whereas mara was chosen months later by the dubbing studio cos it probably sounds a bit more poetic and idiomatic (I'm thinking about glór na mara - the voice/sound of the sea, but I'm sure there are tons more!). Now that I come to think of it, muir is also the term most often associated with merfolk and sea folklore in general (maighdean mhara/mermaid, ainmhithe mara/sea creatures,...), but it's all just speculation.
TLDR: unless it's an idiomatic expression I personally prefer farraige but either is fine!
Hope this helps :)

My translation #1 “Song of the Sea“ in Scottish Gaelic (Òran a’ Chuain)
Hello, everyone! it’s nice to meet you.
I’m Yúka, a Japanese girl who loves “PK”, “Moana”, and “Song of the Sea”.
I learn Scottish Gaelic and Irish.
I’m translating “Song of the Sea” into Scottish Gaelic nowadays.
I titled it “Òran na Mara” (edit: I changed the title into “Òran a’ Chuain” because of there’s same-named place).
It means “Song of the Sea”.
