I'll be completely honest with y'all I would kill a man and sell my left arm to watch Matt Smith's performance as Patrick Bateman in the American Psycho Musical live.
Ok I saw American Psycho the musical (I'm pretty sure it was the broadway version but I can't really tell)........ Uhhh I have some thoughts.
Okay, first of all, because It's a musical, I thought they were going to lean into the comedy and absurdity of American Psycho, but they didn't, which was really surprising to me. It's like, dreary, gorey, existential, and kind of slow, which is not really what musicals are typically known for. I can't really decide if I like that decision or not?? It was like super artsy and weird??? Idk man.
It had really really REALLY good staging and effects, pulling down a splash screen and then splattering blood on it when he killed Paul was the coolest thing I've ever seen.
But the songs........................are like really bad, everyone says the composer is like a broadway legend and I just??? It's so bad??? It sounds terrible actually?? The lyrics are terrible, and the backing tracks are terrible. I thought maybe they just sounded bad in the bootleg recording I watched but the album version might even sound worse holy shit. It seems like they think that electronic synths = scary, they all sound the same, gah, idk, I hate the songs. (Ok except for killing time that song could make me cry i think)
Conclusion: I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, It's not like terrible its just not what I expected, I thought it would be more campy and fun but it was kinda slow. Anyways, the guy who wrote riverdale wrote this play btw (And they preformed this play inside of a riverdale episode)
Guys will say "He's just like me fr" but dawg have you ever been paralyzed by the impending dread of a deadline while your brain loops killing time from the axed musical American Psycho. Have you.
