I love the band American Football. They’re so good. I love all the albums they’ve put out! I own all the major releases except for the First Year Demos record.

What gets me though is how much it just sounds like Owen.

Owen, for those who don’t know, is the solo project of founding American Football member Mike Kinsella. I ALSO love Owen! It’s a great sound and tugs at my heartstrings in many ways and is very very nostalgic to me.

I remember getting up on chilly fall mornings at like 6am to feed my neighbor’s dogs while they were out camping and I would blast the album At Home With Owen out of my dinky lil phone. It was one of those Samsung Galaxy’s that were the cheaper weird versions. I think it was called a Galaxy Ace Style? Anyway...

What bugs me is LP2 and 3. Especially LP2. I like the albums don’t get me wrong! But to me it really just sounds like Owen with bigger instrumentation. LP2, I will say, also I think has not great mixing (or mastering or whatever, idk which is the correct term).

I didn’t want another LP1 or anything or for them to be “stuck” to that style from back in 1999, but I was looking for something a bit more different than just the Owen sound with more instruments.

I do not know intricate musical thingies like “keys” and such, but if I had to guess based on my limited knowledge OF keys, it really sounds like Mike Kinsella sings in the same key for Every song, with very little variation.

LP3 is *better* at deviating the sound, but it still just sounds like Owen to me.

When I put on an American Football record, I wanna hear *American Football*, not songs that sound like they’re “by Owen (feat. American Football).”

That said I do like LP2 and LP3, I listen to LP3 specifically quite a lot actually (favorite song is Every Wave To Ever Rise, Elizabeth Powell’s voice is just perfect for the song), but that doesn’t mean I don’t have my gripes.
