Next mix (number 17), with some familiar faves (Kate NV, Cornelius, Altin Gün, Chemical Brothers) but mostly new to me. I jump aboard a modest hype train for Sweeping Promises, extol the virtues of outcast nerd girls in rap (Bbyafricka), and think about Cameroonian music and where its foundational sense of 6 comes from. Oh, and there's a completely bonkers synth solo at the end.

BEHOLD! Turkish psychedelic funk band, Altin Gün! Not the deepest cut in the world, but on the list of my favourite groups; Altin Gün takes folk songs and turns 'em into dance-y pop tunes. I don't remember how I got into this band, but had fell in love with and snagged "Vay Dünya" when it was a b-side single to "Cemalim." This was my first-ever 45!

I had the immense luck in seeing Altin Gün perform with El Khat last fall--an opportunity I never thought I'd have--but, sadly, Merve, their lead vocalist, has just recently left the band for other endeavours. They put on a wild dance party!!

Altin Gün have been getting raves for their sixth studio album, Aşk, and with the Turkish-Dutch psychedelic band’s North American tour in support of the LP winding down, everyone in last night’s welcoming Brooklyn Steel crowd found out exactly why.
