Lighting it up
On Christmas Eve we took a ride down "Christmas Tree Lane."
It's a .7-mile stretch of Santa Rosa Avenue in Altadena - about 15 miles from downtown L.A. - famous for its annual extravagant holiday light shows.
It's happened every year since 1920. The association that runs the show claims it's the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world. Who could dispute it ...?
As you can see from the photos, visitors get a little humor along with thousands of lights.

Callisto Tea House, 1359 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107
How nice to have a new tea house in the neighborhood and no, they do not serve milk tea. Callisto is a place to get enjoy a pot of high quality tea or if you’d like, they have gong fu service (a Chinese) tea ceremony and cold brew. They also have treats that pair well with tea, including sweet and savory scones, toast (they make their own sourdough bread), cookies, cakes, and assorted tea treats. You can also sign up for tea tastings.
You can choose your tea cup from the ones on the shelves. They also sell bagged teas, tea cups, and tea accessories.
Asian tea treats ($5): digestive biscuit, peanut brittle, almond brittle, hawthorne berry, dried pomelo peel, two milk cookies. Very nice – tiny bites for the most part but very flavorful. The flavors change your tea drinking experience. I liked everything – the crisp thin cookies, the sharp pomelo peel, the crunchy brittle pieces.
Pot of November Rain tea (black tea + cardamom), $6: Liked it – subtle cardamom flavor
The shop has a relaxing look and feel. The owners are very kind too. Even the music is soothing. There’s a parking lot in the back, free wi-fi, books to browse and some games too. The bathroom is nice.
5 out of 5 stars.
