Lighting it up
On Christmas Eve we took a ride down "Christmas Tree Lane."
It's a .7-mile stretch of Santa Rosa Avenue in Altadena - about 15 miles from downtown L.A. - famous for its annual extravagant holiday light shows.
It's happened every year since 1920. The association that runs the show claims it's the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world. Who could dispute it ...?
As you can see from the photos, visitors get a little humor along with thousands of lights.

Christmas Tree Lane is a 0.7-mile boulevard of deodar cedar trees in Altadena, California. The trees on the Lane, Santa Rosa Avenue, have been lighted annually as a Christmas Holiday display since 1920. The association that runs it claims it is "the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world.” Christmas Tree Lane was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1990, the same year it was also designated as California Historical Landmark No. 990. 🎄

Callisto Tea House, 1359 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107
Tumblr media
How nice to have a new tea house in the neighborhood and no, they do not serve milk tea. Callisto is a place to get enjoy a pot of high quality tea or if you’d like, they have gong fu service (a Chinese) tea ceremony and cold brew. They also have treats that pair well with tea, including sweet and savory scones, toast (they make their own sourdough bread), cookies, cakes, and assorted tea treats. You can also sign up for tea tastings.
You can choose your tea cup from the ones on the shelves. They also sell bagged teas, tea cups, and tea accessories.
Asian tea treats ($5): digestive biscuit, peanut brittle, almond brittle, hawthorne berry, dried pomelo peel, two milk cookies. Very nice – tiny bites for the most part but very flavorful. The flavors change your tea drinking experience. I liked everything – the crisp thin cookies, the sharp pomelo peel, the crunchy brittle pieces.
Pot of November Rain tea (black tea + cardamom), $6: Liked it – subtle cardamom flavor
The shop has a relaxing look and feel. The owners are very kind too. Even the music is soothing. There’s a parking lot in the back, free wi-fi, books to browse and some games too. The bathroom is nice.
5 out of 5 stars.

We celebrated Pride in 2023 by painting a couple of petite rainbows on the ground at the Altadena (CA) Senior Center. Thanks to Councilman Nic Arnzen and Liz Espinoza (giving me mad sassy side eye in the first pic) for organizing us, and thanks to my enthusiastic apprentice painter, Tianle Su! A group had already painted a crosswalk in ROYGBIV when we arrived in the early morning, and we worked alongside a group of sweet and great artists like Heather Hilliard Bond @hhbarts and Teresa Chandradibya @tchandradibya
There was also a fantastic art exhibit of the LGBTQ artist, Tony de Carlo inside the center as well. Super inspirational.
I kinda wanna do this image again, BUT REAL BIG. Let’s see if they have us come back.

Liz Espinoza, thanks for inviting us to chalk up some rainbows at Altadena Pride last June 2023! Also thanks to Altadena council member Nic Arnzen for coordinating the event with Liz. I wanna do this image way larger again in 2023.
As usual also thanks to pro painter Tianle Su!
