Because I mentioned my Heroes fandom time and once I start thinking about Heroes I will not stop, it remains funny as shit that Heroes was like, "Here's our serial killer villain. He's not a sociopath or mentally ill or any of that bullshit, he doesn't even need to resort to this to get what he wants, he's just a fucked up little freak obsessed with power and he can stop anytime he likes. We're going to give him an utterly incomprehensible redemption arc for no reason. And it's gonna slap."

every other day i make this post on twitter so now the tumblrinas get it. i greatly prefer the original evangelion series to the eva rebuilds and my main reason is because the rebuilds were too afraid to make asuka genuinely bitchy and not like, tsundere rude.

OHOHOHO. I am always ready to help enable someone's reread, anon!
The way I'm gonna do this I think is, I'll put down a list of what I think is worth reading if you want to follow the IDW Prowl arc in a way that hits the main beats that wind up paying off in retrospect, with the luxury of examining the entire continuity from the vantage point of it being complete.
I'll also mark some of this stuff as "optional". Some of this is optional because it is not very relevant to the overall arc, or is out of sync with later depictions in some way; some of it is frankly just optional because it's bad, and forcing yourself to read endless shit TF comics is something that should never be demanded of anyone with limited time on this Earth if you aren't the kinda freak who wants to. LMAO.
Finally: I'm gonna write this as though it's for someone totally new to the whole thing. Because that way I can have fun infodumping. Hehe.

Up front: Infiltration is a miniseries that is mediocre at its best and pretty bad at its worst IMO. It is, yanno. A Simon Furman comic, so.
Why am I putting this here anyway? One, it's the literal start of the IDW continuity and contains a shitton of stuff that will go on to be referenced through even comics like MTMTE. Two, it establishes Verity's character, which is obviously relevant for Wreckers later for our purposes here- and more specifically how she and Prowl actually know each other, which gives some context to their interactions. And three, it establishes the "original" Prowl characterization for IDW1, prior to Roche coming in and mucking about with him later on. Rather than be something which later retcons and developments undermine completely, this is more something where if you've been reading from the start, it makes it feel a bit less weird that every other character isn't constantly going 'why the fuck would we trust Prowl, though'. You get a sense of like 'oh OK, he was being Fucking Normal around them', haha.
Spotlight: Kup
Prowl is actually barely in this page time wise, but it still has big implications for stuff later down the line by way of setting stuff up, and since it is 1) only a single issue and 2) Actually Fucking Good, I'm putting it in. This issue works to help set up the eventual Prowl characterization we get, as well as his ties to both Springer and Kup. (Actually, I would generally say that if you've read Wreckers but not this, go back and give it a read, as it contextualizes a lot for the relationship between those three!)
[OPTIONAL] 99% of All Hail Megatron
This is a similar thing to Infiltration, really. Prowl is in it somewhat, it helps establish a kind of baseline characterization for him at this point in the comics. None of it is super important down the line but it gives more context if you want it for some later choices, and there's a few bits that establish stuff like e.g. his unpopularity with certain segments of the Autobots, that sort of thing. Also uhhh. Spike is in it! Y…ay. But I mean, he WILL be unavoidable in this overall trajectory; and he starts off here.
You can skip it though. Or skim it; again, it's soooo goddamn LONG. Sigh. You know, this series was what was coming out when I got into TF, it put me off IDW for years, hah.
All Hail Megatron #15, specifically
The one bit that's not optional because this is where his entire post-AHM characterization hinges, basically. The first half of this issue, which contains two 'coda' stories, is basically just one long inner monologue of Prowl showing himself to be someone who lies his ass off and manipulates people around him using his position and resources to do whatever he thinks is necessary, and it sets up a major plot point in Sins of the Wreckers with Kup and Springer. So, this is where Prowl goes from being kinda an asshole interpersonally to actually a war crimes man in-canon, haha. …well uh, sort of… we'll get to that later.
Last Stand of the Wreckers
Duh. He's not in this one as much as its sequel but this is still the first 'full' story to explore the version of Prowl detailed above and to cement him. He's an ambiguous little asshole whose presence in this story is less rooted in how much he shows up on the page proper, and more in how much his actions ripple out to effect other people.
Also like. Last Stand is great, it's just a good comic! Treat yourself to a (re)read sometime. Especially with the extras and the like.=
[OPTIONAL] Read all of Costa's run on the ongoing (#1-#31), inflicting horrific psychic damage on yourself
Prowl is in Costa's run of TF and it ties in to the above, sometimes controversially! It seems he was something of an author's favourite, honestly. Anyway it's awful. Actually doing this is a terrible idea. Costa's run of TF sucks so bad it actually kind of fascinates me, but 31 issues of terrible, badly-paced comics is way too much for most people, and rightly so.
The thing is though, Barber DOES pick up on stuff from this run in his exRiD stuff. He often makes sure to try and reintroduce it so you don't have to have read the Costa run to get it, but there genuinely is more stuff in there than you might assume given how much the fandom as a whole would go on to mostly just sort of ignore it. This includes with Prowl, who Costa seems to have latched on to a bit.
Of course, mooost of this run isn't about Prowl. So instead of doing a whole re-read, you can just read…
Read just issues #8, #25-29 and Spotlight: Prowl
Issue #8 is not actually an issue with Prowl in it. It's the issue where Spike kills Scrapper. This matters both because it gets picked up in Costa's run later, and also because Barber is gonna lean hard on a storytelling opportunity for this in early exRiD. Also, this issue is really awful, but will instill in you a loathing of IDW Spike that I think is part of being a well rounded person.
Spotlight: Prowl also sucks. It's basically a comic that exists because Costa didn't want to write the new Prowl characterization but everyone got mad he retconned it for his comic, because the Roche take from AHM's coda was wayyyy more popular than Costa's 'idealistic sort-of-noir-ish-not-really cop' take. Spotlight: Prowl tries to give an in-universe explanation for Prowl's complete personality 180 by giving us a story about how Humans Are Super Special or whatever. However, Barber doesn't retcon it, and in fact will treat this as an important if brief moment in Prowl's life in exRiD.
Issues #25-#29 are the 'Police Action' storyline which involves Prowl finding out about the above murder and confronting Spike about it. This betrayal will be something Barber also leans into very hard, though he's gonna recontextualize it a bit. Similar to the above, all this stuff is gonna get mixed up by Barber into a big old 'Prowl's having Issues around projecting his hopes for being better onto humans and getting burned' later on. So retrospectively, this is when Prowl's most recent attempt to turn a new leaf goes sour, in-universe.
The Death of Optimus Prime
This is the prelude to both MTMTE and exRiD and is sometimes overlooked when people talk about phase two these days. It sets up the new, phase two status quo for the ongoings. This is your introduction to Prowl as written by Barber and Roberts.
The early MTMTE Prowl stuff
Read the first issue, Shadowplay in its entirety, then at least issue #14 (the mnemosurgery/flashback one) from the Overlord arc. I talk about these on here all the time, whatever, you know the drill, it's Prowl And Chromedome Are Awful Exes ft. War Crimes AND Regular Crimes! Roberts has a take on Prowl that is actually pretty distinct IMO, it's fun to read alongside Roche and Barber's work in this period. They're not totally out of sync with each other, just... individual. (Sidenote: this, combined with a chunk of IDW1 fandom not reading exRiD in full or honestly at all, means that IMO a lot of disagreement over Prowl boils down to folks only knowing the Prowl in this comic and taking it as fully representative of the whole canon. Shrug.)
Robots in Disguise ("exRiD")
AKA 'the phase two ongoing where Prowl was one the main characters' so yeah, this one, obviously. This is where like… a good 70% of the Prowl stuff is in IDW, honestly. Anyway, Prowl is especially in focus at the start, where Barber gives us a lot of focus on him in the aftermath of the Earth stuff Costa did with him. The first arc of his runs through issue #16, the end of 'season one' before Dark Cybertron starts. (exRiD has a lot more arcs overlapping at once than MTMTE does, so its arcs tend to run along more issues as they take turns.) But he's around the whole time basically, right through to the end of Barber's time on IDW1. If you want to talk IDW1 Prowl, you basically gotta read everything Barber did with him. And if you want to understand it, you ought to read it fully.
(Note: exRiD underwent mandated name changes etc that mean at some point, the collected editions turn into 'The Transformers'. Use tfwiki if you get confused, haha. Also, Dark Cybertron gets its own trades as a crossover event- but that's the one everyone remembers, so I'll put it here. Buuut speaking of this comic being confusing...)
The Combiner Wars event, which includes but is not limited to exRiD, oh god this comic is so complicated.
There's an event that's set mostly around the exRiD parts of phase two called Combiner Wars. It includes some exRiD issues but is collected in a seperate trade called "Combiner Wars" and crosses over with the Windblade comics. Spoiler alert, Prowl is very important in it, because it deals with combiners and in exRiD he became a combiner. It's also kind of a mess because errrr, a HUGE amount of it was editorially mandated and in multiple cases basically required backtracking and retconning stuff to make work within what was requested for advertising purposes. Not... the series' highest moment, but there you go.
Sins of the Wreckers
Yaaaaay it's the Prowl divorce story! My favourite one!!! Anyway, you can actually read this one whenever after LSotW. The Wreckers stories exist as their own thing really. But this falls soooometime around, oooh, middle of exRiD, gestures at Combiner Wars, etc etc. (Basically: SotW was written while the ongoing was coming out, obviously, and by the time it was complete and being released, the timeline got a bit wobbly, so nailing it down to a super specific timeline in-universe is a bit 'eh'. The final page of SotW #5 was edited to reflect this but just read it sometime after CW, it's fine, whatever.)
This series actually has like. No meaningful impact on the broader universe's plot. But it has so many crimes and schemes! And divorce! And the one big thing: it's when Arcee gets properly sick of Prowl, after their relationship in exRiD was established throughout that comic's run up to this point.
The Titans Return event, mostly for the MTMTE bits, which I guess a lot of people skipped???
Same as CW except, thank god, smaller scale. Has its own trade, and the main bit of interest winds up being that the last two issues of MTMTE before it relaunched as LL were issues with Prowl in focus as part of this event. Apparently some folks reading MTMTE in trades these days have nooo idea these two issues exist because they're in a totally separate trade, oops. Anyway, Roberts puts Prowl on the moon and picks up some dangling MTMTE plotlines. TR makes no sense but these specific issues are fun because they are ridiculous in a way that is enjoyable to read if you just ignore the plot.
[OPTIONAL] Requiem of the Wreckers
...OK, fine, he's not really in this one. You should take the excuse to read it and conclude the Wreckers saga though, I mean. Why not.
Optimus Prime ongoing issues #1-7, #13-14, #22
I'm being nice and not telling you to read all of the OP ongoing even though I kinda want to. A lot of folks skipped out on that comic, even folks who liked exRiD, for a great many reasons. So I'll keep it to the essentials. The first arc includes some flashbacks to Prowl's early association with Orion and gives some insight into Barber's take on his backstory; he's not in every single one of those issues, but you may as well read 'em all, it's a full story. #13-14 is when Prowl comes back from his moon vacation and re-enters the exRiD playing field. And #22 is the issue that features Prowl that leads into Unicron, and. Well.
Sidenote: if the plots don't make sense this is pretty normal, and might not be meaningfully changed by reading the whole series, I'm not gonna lie.
Unicron (+ Optimus Prime #25)
Read the Unicron miniseries! It's what finishes off the IDW continuity and, crucially, is Barber's grand finale. Lost Light had its own ending where everything was at something of a remove, as a series that was able to exist a little more as its own thing. The other series, however, had Unicron. Prowl's in it, he does stuff. Some people hate this miniseries, I really like it, regardless it's the capstone to the entire segment of the comics Prowl has been a major player in. And then read Optimus Prime #25, the IDW1 universe's epilogue of sorts, which ties it up not so much in plot terms but thematically. Prowl gets his last word in there.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is this: COD was probably not made intentionally for us, but the cast has made it so, of their own free will.
They've taken military propaganda and remixed it square enix style for people who don't get to see themselves represented in media ever, especially as heroes. (allow me to borrow Elliot's wording, it's so so so important okay.)
Well, except Vova Makarov.
And, yanno, the fact that the boys are literal war criminals. But you know what I mean aha.

I’m so interested in your take about the level of obsession that certain fandoms invite based on their quality because you’re so right I don’t need to read hunger games fic I got what I needed from the series
But like also sometimes when something is rlly good too I wanna read fic just so I can be in that world a bit longer.
Like for example I love leverage. The og series is great perfect ending no notes. I loooove leverage fic though because it allows me to follow little rabbit holes that aren’t necessary for the overarching story. I wanna see them deal w their trauma yanno?
But then we got the stranger things stuff where not only do you want to explore those things bc you love the premise you also wanna just fix stuff bc the writers really just haven’t landed it
It’s so interesting to me that there’s a whole kind of in between genre for me (and presumably others) where the content is solid and enjoyable but I feel no real need to expand upon it in fic form

Yeah, it really is interesting to think about all the little ways people engage in fandom, especially fic. Like you said, the whole thing where you really like the world so you want to live in it a little longer? That's a lovely sentiment, I've thought and TRIED, but I usually read fics in that fandom for a day before getting bored.
There's the opposite extreme, where you don't necessarily get obsessed with it, but out of spite, you write something because jesus, how did the writers fumble that so spectacularly? (I did this with Alice in Borderland lmao).
And then the area where I usually live: the story has extremely compelling elements, usually for me it's gotta be both characters and the world, but there's enough plot holes and dropped plotlines that you can fuck around with forever, and enough left unfinished that you can just keep going. (this is Stranger Things to me).

For starters, MadaIzu. Like, ofc we didn't have much of them shown but a) Uchiha is incest anyway and I will stand by it and b) Izuna was shown to be the only one that stood next to Madara. Nobody, literally almost nobody in this series could ever achieve that, no matter how willing one was - and Izuna was, I assume, entirely here for Madara. Maybe even was one of few people that thought about him, maybe even had him wrapped around his little finger and Madara would do a lot for his little bro. Man.
MadaObi. WHERE DO I EVEN START like I feel like I am going crazy when I start thinking about it. They are connected on so many fields, Obito being his descendant, Madara getting his body, stitching it together (man, there was that one fantastic art with old madara and obito.... doing precisely that), literally putting his hands on this boy's heart and sealing it (POETRY), brainwashing into becoming himself and later using Obito for all his worth, giving him life and choosing when to take it away, and Obito starting to resists like jfc my brainworms. I like them both as also shit jiji and bratty mago. THEY ARE JUST SO GOOD FUCKKKKKKKK I AM GNAWING AT MY HOODIE LIKE A RABID ANIMAL AAAAAA
HashiMada. That's all. Although... I like it a bit darker, not in means of whump and such but I can't help but thing that Hashirama unknowingly stumbled on something that swallowed both of them. Hashirama may have best interests in heart, but he isn't a good person, and Madara... Madara has his own issues. More below.
MadaTobi is nice. I always found it hilarious how similar they are and yet so different, and I like to think that's why they are so appealing together. Those two are not alright but maybe that's why they could have a relationship that would be akin to watching a slow hurricane in a distance. Gorgeous but pity everyone in its path. Those lads have mental issues but both are crazy scientists, and both are prickly cats, yanno?

Well, more like mentally ill, not like those two things cancel out, but he really genuinely didn't question a moment when he heard a voice in his head say "do x thing" and he just fucking goes and does it. Disjointed Nona thoughts under the cut because I just read it and desire to Speak About It

Pyrrha Dve is insane and I love her so much.
Everything about Gideon/Kiriona made me unspeakably sad, its like... Gideon but not her at all, yanno? Like, there was no warmth behind any of the jokes she made and it just made her feel so bitter and lifeless and hollow. Great writing but so sad.
Like I would pay a million dollars for a snapshot of her perspective when Nona kissed her. Also Tamsyn Muir owes me a million dollars for emotional damages for having fucking SLEEPING BEAUTY happen in the middle of all this craziness I s2g. So really the million dollars evens out.
Also everyone who ever gave a hot goddamn about palamedes/dulcinea owes me $20 because like lbr here how much love can you have for some lady you’ve never met vs. the person youve grown up with and depended on I mean come on people
Everything about Nona, but the fact that she has pica somehow gave me the most feelings. Her pretending to be Harrow was so incredibly hilarious and I am the first one in my household to read it so I can’t share with anyone how funny that was.
Also speaking of palamedes and cam, this book really twists the knife wrt how fucking tragic gideon and harrow’s story is. Like, they are wedged so deep into an impossible middle ground, somewhere between the original Lyctors who did it super wrong and Paul who mostly(?) figured it out but just. The limbo they’re stuck in is ugh.
The fact that Gideon even though she’s a hollow version of herself sTiLl was like “where’s harrow” @ nona I fucking cannot.
Whoever called the fact that there would be a skeleton war joke, I salute thee
And speaking of the skeleton war, did anyone else really find Jod scarily relatable? Like he’s detestable obvs but in the exact same way I think any person is capable of being. In his situation I can’t say for sure I’d do anything differently, which is a very compelling thing for a very detestable character.
Interesting how this book makes it preeeetty clear how immediately every single Lyctor was plotting against Jod. Like, the Sixth one whose name I don’t remember had it early, Anastasia clearly was doing something hella early, Pyrrha was hiding out... so many of them had their foot out the door its almost the literal opposite of the Jesus/disciples narrative.
I also love how much and how little we really understand about the resurrection beasts. What the hell was one doing channeling Judith? I guessed in Harrow that they represented the nine planets, so I’m guessing that Nona/Alecto can understand them because she’s also a planet?
Speaking of all the “/”es going on there’s a fascinating undercurrent of like what the hell is gender in this whole book. Like... Paul but also Prince Ianthe Naberius and Prince Kiriona and Nona struggling with they/them for Aim and Coronabeth struggling with she/her for Pyrrha. I guess it goes hand in hand with the questions of identity and souls and body that is pretty central to the whole series
A friend asked if I liked the book cause I borrowed her copy and I don’t know if ‘like’ is the right word but like intensely compelling, enjoyable to read, I will be thinking about this for days so????????

This week's episode of Mandalorian went hard. I have so many thoughts but I cannot put them into words because I watched it at like 7am when I woke up, watched it, went back to sleep so it feels like half of it was a dream.
I have made the executive decision that I am calling out from work today as a mental health day/I need more fucking sleep. I also kinda like the idea of having, yanno, two days off in a row. So even though it's going to fuck my paycheck (because I am not making up these hours GDI) I think I need it.
EDIT: Spoke with work and I guess with the new attendance policy they just put down you can elect if you want them to use your PTO or personal time. So I actually can get paid for today. Which yay. Lets me burn some of my banked PTO so I don't lose it as I'm still actively exploring new jobs and I think I have like 6 days banked at this point. And then 2 days of unpaid personal time.
I'm going to go catch a 3pm showing of D&D movie. I was super tempted by the new Mario Bro's movie since I've heard it's a serotonin-filled colorful spectacle but I don't want to deal with kids talking and being...yanno kids. At a kids movie. That might be a late night only showing sorta situation.
So yeah, I'm going to do that, hopefully catch a nap and re-watch Mandalorian and come back with a more cohesive thought than just keyboard smashing.
Non-spoiler thoughts. I'm kinda getting a little tired of this recent trend of SW shows where they have some vague meandering plot for most of the season, get to the last two episodes and I guess have a collective 'oh shit we only have two more episodes? LETS SHOVE EVERYTHING INTO IT" and they got super hard.
For two episodes.
What about that random series of very dragging, could have prolly been cut down a bit episodes where the heroes have to do some kind of fetch quest or whatever? TBB Is INFAMOUS for this but honestly, last two seasons of Mandalorian have been, TBoBF suffered the same thing. Fucks sake it twook almost 1/3 of it's run time to dedicate to Mandalorian Season 2.5.
Andor I feel like didn't suffer AS MUCH with the pacing. I'm sure some people could argue the whole prison thing went on maybe a bit too long but it was such a glorious ride we all loved it and Andy Serkis too much to complain. Also Andor is one of the best SW series to ever be put out.
And I honestly could not tell you what the fuck happened in Obi-Wan Kenobi even thought I think it's been less than a year. I need to re-watch it but I want to say it had the same problem. Like last two eps were fire, what the fuck happened up till that point? Fuck if I can tell you. Something-something Kenobi was brooding and eternally suffering. Something-something Leia was sassy and does anyone at Lucasarts know how to write a kid who is just a dumb kid? Like, have you ever tried to reason with a five year old when they are tired and cranky? It's filled with escalating tantrums, tears and a lot of sulking. Which gets worse because eventually the kid gets so upset they forget how to actually communicate with their words and they are just a bundle of emotions.
I loved Leia but she was only like five or six and acted like a 10+ year old except for a couple of scenes. So yeah Star Wars has zero idea how to write kids. Prolly because kids are lowkey terrors and they would prolly trigger PTSD in half their audience if they made it too realistic.
Also wow that was a tangent.
My point being, not loving this waiting till the last two episodes to make these huge impactful plot bombs and maybe they need to work on their pacing and cutting of extraneous bullshit.

i wasn't expecting to see the return of so many swf crews, but i should not have been surprised bc i think they need someone to save the show's tanking popularity. mostly the matchups are pretty good, except for prowdmon that was a fucking WASTE of their skills holy shit. just jerk, eoddae, and ygx's are my faves! just jerk as always does an excellent job with the choreo but also incorporating the guest dancers' style into that choreo. the clockwork horror theme + very percussive music also suited both their styles really well, all in all just a very slick and well made package.
LOVE eoddae's intro with vogue (the song) and the picture frames!! really great and simple way to set up and image and it tells you what you're gonna get immediately. obvs both were the same/very compatible styles so there was no surprises there.
i actually liked wdbz's, but i think that's because it feels WAY more like a hook choreography than one of their own. it has a lot of the hallmarks of a hook choreo; there's a lot of big flashy formations that look very cool, but it still has the feel of looking at a series of images rather than a whole flowing choreo. granted i think that problem is much more minute and this is probably one of hook's best performances on the show(s), but also there's no real reason why it HAD to be wdbz, yanno? like as a crew they don't have a ton of character, and you could have swapped in bank 2 brothers ygx or even 1million here and it wouldn't have mattered much to the end product at all. i guess in a way that means they were successful in showcasing their guest dancers' style, but....eh. it doesn't feel as much like a collaboration as just jerk's or eoddae's.
1million had the toughest challenge of everyone lol, it's surprisingly hard to integrate latin into street dance styles bc it's predominantly partnered, and street styles are not. the only time i've seen it work semi-successfully is with waacking, which 1million did encorporate a little bit of. i think it was a great choice to use iron in the beginning bc it has a lot of heavy percussive elements that work great for syncing rhythms to, and i think they did a great job overall, given the difficultly of the task. i think they were probably one of the better choices for taking up this challenge in the first place so i'm glad that these guest dancers picked them.
bank 2 brothers...............prowdmon why. how could you do this to me. like i can sort of see some of their influence in having the concept be very literal and tied to the song + an unusual choice of song, but i just.....don't think b2b are at their level. imo they're the weakest crew on the show now and they don't have the same 1) skill level and 2) clarity of intention with choreo to match up with prowdmon and make this an equal collab.
i also did lke ygx's choreo as well, it's solid hiphop, and probably bc it was filmed by someone who was not mnet. i'm assuming it wasn't bc they were eliminated?

It's kind of interesting how in both the 2012 Black Rock Shooter show and Dawn Fall, Chariot (or Charlotte, but c'mon we all know it's Chariot) has been associated with easily the most disturbing and fucked-up arcs of the respective series.
With 2012, it at least didn't go to such an extreme, but the "sewing into Yomi's skin" stuff was still pretty damn uncomfortable, and felt like it got waved off too easily later. (Though admittedly I am overdue for a rewatch.)
But then in Dawn Fall it's been all the Smiley cult stuff, which is... I don't know. I kinda don't hate it, but I also kinda really hate it. I feel like the writers thought they were saying something about misogyny and sex trafficking and stuff, and the narrative is very clearly sympathetic to the victims and doesn't portray Smiley as anything other than the disturbing patriarchal freak he is. His death could have been given more fanfare, but it's still treated as an unequivocally good thing.
But at the same time, something about the whole thing still feels just, gratuitous to me. Shock and grimdarkness for its own sake, showing disturbing sexual violence just for the sake of being taken seriously. Immature mature content, yanno? Making him a murder-rapist to make us hate him, rather than making us hate him because he's just terrible in general. Even with how obviously and gleefully edgy BRS as a franchise has always been, this felt like a step too far in a way that just doesn't line up with the style of edge that's been present in previous incarnations. It's kind of ironic how the violence and fighting has become on some level sanitized with the nanotech-by-another-name stuff the title characters have going on, while simultaneously going far far further than ever before in this regard.
At the same time though, the Smiley arc clearly serves a few narrative purposes. It brings Strength and Dead Master back to BRS's side after their initial estrangement by giving them a common enemy to rally around, it serves as a vehicle (heh) to introduce Chariot, who's set up as going to still be relevant in the back half, (we'll have to see where that goes) and possibly also setting something up with Miya; the weirdness around her presence in Episode 6 was well, weird, and I have conspiracy theories that that might not be entirely over with, either. And of course, it served to further Empress's character development with the tragic outcome of Episode 3's rescue attempt. So in a lot of ways it's built into the show's structure and would be hard to remove or improve without drastically altering other things.
Despite all that, though, I just still think it's more of a detriment to the show than an asset, in terms of just basic watchability. Like I said, despite the clear intended "this is bad and it's supposed to feel bad", that doesn't stop it from, well... feeling bad. On one hand, props for not sanitizing how fucked-up cults like that can be. On the other hand, again it just feels incongruous and gratuitous that they decided to go that far with things in the first place. I feel like there could have been a way to achieve those narrative and thematic goals without going to such extremes, and the show as a whole would have been better for it. Now though, it's not something I can really recommend in good conscience, because the whole thing just feels so pointlessly excessive and gross, and the back half is going to have to be really really really amazing just to make up for that, let alone justify it.
I hope this makes sense, I feel like I'm kinda talking in circles here.
Point is, Smiley bad, was probably just a fundamentally bad call without better execution than there's been so far, and I hope wherever they're going with Chariot/Charlotte in the back half will have been worth it but I have my doubts.
Oh, right, that's the other thing. Why is it always Chariot? I hope that if there's any other significant BRS media made after Dawn Fall that includes her, they manage to break the curse of her always being associated with stuff that feels too edgy or the wrong kind of edgy for even this franchise. I really like her design(s), but I just can't enjoy her as a character like the others because of all this baggage.

Michael "Mickey" James Starr
-24, bday October 13th. Technically it’s October 12th, but he doesn’t celebrate it until the 13th. Reason why is his twin was born at 1:59, he was at 12:01. He’s weird about it.

-Trans man, bi
-Family wise...He doesn't care for his dad and the likewise for him. He sorta left after his parents got divorced when he was like 12. He never really bothered to get to know his kids, which kinda started the whole deal with Mickey.
-His mom, he loves her but she's more like Mitch but ten fold. She's super hyper and overbearing and tried WAAAY too hard so now he hates noseyness and opening up and REALLY values his privacy.
-Has a twin sister named Mitchell, who he doesn't really talk to much. They're pretty different and just can't agree to disagree on small things.
-THAT gave him his motto of "You don't bug me, I don't bug you!" when it comes to strangers! He's not easy to get to know, oops.
-Hobbies include watching horror flicks, perusing auction sites, drawing horror, reading comic books, and writing dnd campaigns.
-First pet was a rock he fed with stickers.
-Horror fanatic, has tons of props around his place that he takes GREAT care of. Some are even legitimate props from auctions! Yes he spends too much money on them.
-Runs a blog that's him reviewing modern horror flicks or series. It's not that popular but he doesn't really give a shit, it's more for him to yell into the void.
-His favorite horror is alien scifi. Thus, his favorite movie is Aliens 1985. He's got a crush on the Xenomorph
-Personality wise he's stone faced and quiet. Blunt and doesn't like to beat around the bush. He's honest to a fault, though. Just don't expect him to slam you with a bunch of ice breakers right off the bat.
-He REALLY perks up when he's talking about horror n scary n gross things, he has this thing where he'll run on and on with just one breath. He'll get more excited with each word. He's a passionate dude. Kinda rare to happen though since he's so mellow, and doesn't outwardly show his excitement much.
-Under all that stoic grumpness he's a huge cornball that reads romance novels and kicks his feet when the two people kiss after 10 chapters. He's also kept all of the crafts Mitch has made him, like the holiday cards or whatnot. He gets p upset if they get creased.
-Works at a comic book store in this megamall. He'll spend his breaks reading the most interesting looking ones! Shockingly hasn't been fired yet for his lack of retail smile n attitude.
-Fashion sense is a lot of t shirts and dress shirts over those t shirts. Usually it's some kinda graphic shirt but he does have a spot for the goofy ones. Lotta boots and sneakers and converses. He doesn't really try to look his best, more so wants to be comfy and casual. Though, he does like matching colors a lot.
-His types are mean stoic girls, desperate cocky men, and ppl who are generally tall. If someone he thinks is cute is nearby he'll just fucking. Leave as soon as possible HNHYTPJTYPYTKP
-He hates being tall bc he wants to be unnoticeable as possible
-When he came out and started to transition, Mick didn't talk too much about his feelings. At least at first, but he did go out with his mom and lead her around to what clothes he wanted. More so a silent vulnerability for him, an action rather than talking.
-He already had a wardrobe that fit him because yanno over time his style shifted. But he still wanted to do it with his mom. He was willing to share this thing with her, after all.
-They helped choose his new name! His mom immediately started calling him "Mickey" because he's her lil mousey baby uguuguuuuu [she dressed them up as mice for their first halloween and ever since she's called them her Minnies]
-ONLY Mitch and his mom and CLOSE FRIENDS can call him Mickey or Mick. He acts nonchalant about it but he likes his nickname.
