writing advice for newbies!

disclaimer: the advice i’m going to give (funnily enough) is not something that i always personally do. i’ve been writing both fiction and non-fiction for years, i only came to tumblr because i wasn’t satisfied with how i kept pressuring myself to write “high literature” after gaining awards and recognition for my stories. my fanfiction here in this blog...it’s unrefined, definitely not what i used to write before because i’m a lot less serious about it and i’m just writing freely. but the advice i’ll list below is personally some stuff that has helped me a lot in my entire writing journey! Some are technical, some are personal! down below will also list some tumblr related writing advice!

1. Keep writing! No one is born a great writer. Before I actually started publishing/posting my stories, I remember I spent at least five years writing the most random crap just so I can get a feel for what my style is. Plus, the more you do things repeatedly, it’ll come eventually like second nature to you and you’ll find the words are flowing. Keep writing, keep writing, keep writing! Even if you’re not satisfied with your first work, that’s okay, just keep going on!

2. Be mindful of what tense you’re using. NOW I KNOW I DON’T REALLY FOLLOW THIS BUT THAT’S BECAUSE I DON’T EDIT MY FICS LMAO, but you could totally do this! So in writing, we have “voices.” The narration will always use tenses of whether the entire story will be past tense or present tense and it’s important this remains consistent in your entire story. This one is TECHNICAL, this just help improves the flow and formality of your story. As for me though, I don’t really care about the tenses anymore because like I said, I just write freely with no regards for “creative writing techniques.” an example of past tense is: Suki jumped to Naoya’s arms. “My love!” she called, wrapping her arms around him. (RIP EXAMPLES) and present tense is: Suki jumps to Naoya’s arms. “My love!” she calls and wraps her arms around him. (this could be real flexible tho, this is just an example ehehehe)

3. Be mindful of dialogue tags! There’s a huge difference between putting periods and commas after dialogues. Like for example, “Suki loves Naoya,” she declared. If it’s followed by an action, the comma is best. Or example, Suki said, “I really love Naoya.” If the statement can stand alone, then it can be “Suki really loves Naoya./I really love Naoya.” There’s better explanations here! And one more thing, you should put the commas/periods inside the quotation marks. There’s more variations/explanations here but generally, this way of writing,,,example: “Suki really loves Naoya”, LIKE??? if it’s a dialogue, put the commas/periods inside the quotation marks.

4. PARAGRAPH BREAKS. I cannot stress this enough. There should be a variety in the sizes of your paragraphs. Long paragraphs should be followed by smaller ones, varied with medium paragraphs and then so and so forth. There’s no formal sequence that it should be LONG – MEDIUM – SHORT – MEDIUM – LONG, writing is flexible, just make sure you’re varying the lengths because reading long, chunky paragraphs with no end is equally annoying as reading paragraphs that are always 1-2 sentences and then a paragraph break.

5. Outline, outline, outline! Whether it’s long fics or short ones (excluding drabbles, I don’t think you need them that much) outlines will help you have a more solid feel of your story, and you can easily track your story flow when you have your ideas plotted out. or me, my outlines is in the form of Dialogue Outline, where I write out all the dialogues first so my pages will be just conversations then I’ll add the monologues/actions later. That’s personally what works for me, you can discover your own writing style <3

6. Research! Now this is pretty funny for me to say this because I don’t really do research, at least not the “how to effectively write this type of role” or whatever. Of course it’s better if you try to learn more about the concept you’re going to write about (like if you wanna do a vampire AU then read Twiligh – JK THAT’S A BAD REFERENCE, SORRY NOT SORRY, love the memes tho!) or you can do my own way of researching, which is reading other people’s fanfics! Not only do you get a vibe of how this character is like, but you also get to support other content creators!

7. You don’t need verbs all the time. Sometimes I see stories wherein ALL dialogues have “said” “screamed” “explained” on EACH line and here’s the key: as long as the readers can understand which character is speaking, you don’t need dialogue cues all the time.

8. PUT THE KEEP READING TAB. I cannot stress this enough, but please put the keep reading tab. Drabbles are fine without them, but if it exceeds maybe 400 words then you’re going to need that. Sure, it’s easy to scroll past a long text, but some fics are super long and without the keep reading tab that it can be quite a hassle to whoever sees it.

9. Have your own writing safe space. Now this could be more personal than technical, but I absolutely cannot write or focus when I’m in a public space or when I’m being bothered. So if you want to write, SHUT THE WORLD OUT and dive deep into your imaginations, let the noise of your fantasies be louder than distractions.

10. Take your time! I guess that would be my best advice. You don’t have to rush anything at all, and one more thing, DO NOT OVERTHINK! Maybe this is just me but I honestly don’t really try to dive too deep in the technicalities anymore :// I’ve been in Creative Writing class for years and it stressed me out that my writing teachers always told me “not to use big words because no one will understand that” or “don’t try to paint the picture too clearly because not everyone has that big of an imagination” and I was like ISN’T THAT THE POINT THOUGH, TO MAKE PEOPLE IMAGINE THINGS? but yeah anyways, maybe this is just me again, but I find that I write better when I’m not overthinking too much on how to write a “perfect” story. I don’t always have the prettiest words to use. I don’t always have the most intricate plot. I don’t always have the most poetic content that is “inspiring” or “moving.” Sometimes I write stupid shit that has no plot at all, and that’s okay. Just write whatever you want tbh, I’d say my biggest advice is to not worry too much about having the “perfect” story. It’s still great to do research and want to improve your writing skills, but hmm...I guess I’d say the most important thing is that you enjoy what you do!

11. “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” – Ernest Hemingway. This is one of my favourite quotes because it’s true, writing is both complicated and simple, but as for me, writing is something that I don’t want to stress too much about. There isn’t really an actual right or wrong, there isn’t a law, just some techniques that could help you improve, but at the end of the day, it should be about the steady state of progress or the “creation flow” that matters the most. Just write, that’s it. You’ll get there eventually and you’ll start creating magic before you know it. Just let the words flow and build, worry about quality later when you edit it. Or you know, if you’re lazy like me, just post it when you’re done LMAO. really though the BEST advice is to enjoy the process and not stress too much about it!

Testing the waters/ advice/ fan fic comin' at ya.

Warning: Long read.

Hello! Things have changed a lot on Tumblr since I was active here. I'm not familiar with all of the newer in house social rules, but I have been lurking. I believe I have an idea for the safety of myself, others, and my content. I'm excited to share my stuff!

So, let me introduce myself. Sorta. Juju is my internet persona. So, aside from my (funny af to me) Tumblr tag, I go by Juju. Now, let's get heavy. I've battled with depression, PTSD, and anxiety all my life and the gods blessed me with dyslexia. You know. Gotta top it off with something else fun. (Besides not having a metabolism, but whatever. I can work with that,)

About three years ago, I emerged from my severe decade long mental health crisis and because a semi functioning adult. I stopped writing for five years. I stopped doing a lot of neat things, but writing was my go to outlet next to video games. Sad times.

HOWEVER, growth is a thing. Perseverance is a thing. And my friend sat me down in Feb of this year to watch AoT for the absolute first time and...suddenly we were writing again because I fell in love with Reiner, Levi, and Erwin. I haven't had an anime crush since Trunks from DBZ, okay. I have fanfics of my OC and him but, the worlds didn't mesh well.

But the AoT universe was flexible in comparison. Certain aspects of the cannon story did mesh even if my story is some high fantasy bunch of magic mumbo jumbo. I wanted to see my OC and Reiner together so bad because, in my mind, they were kindred spirits and it just HAD to happen.

Also, this project was started because I needed to work out my world and back stories because I haven't touched them in so damn long. The best way to do that, in my opinion, was have my oc enter the AoT universe and have her explain her world, herself, and all the fun things she's had to do over the course of her stupid long life.

It's also a chance to practice inclusive writing to appeal to a wider audience. With that said, I will include as many disclaimers and side notes possible to appeal to everyone. I am open to gentle criticism paired with an article or a personal explanation if my reader has the energy to spare.

Please don't overwhelm me though. I'm still fragile myself and I will try my best. I just want to share my world and writing with everyone. I see so many wonderful works on here (including the smut. seriously. folks get poetic and there are certain sentences that are 10/10. ) and I just want to be apart of it.

I want to inspire someone the way the folks on here have kept me going since March/April. This fan fic will have very dark, psychological moments. There will be NSFW because it's just fun to write. I feel a lot of the story is heavy with dialog, so I apologize in advance.

ALL advice is welcomed. What issues did you face when you started posting your fanfic? What are some core disclaimers that I should always post? What is some overall advice you wish someone had told you before you posted your stories?

Ugh, Kitty...I’ve started to write my fic following your suggestions and they gave me more motivation, so I thank you for that. I cannot stop comparing myself to a writer that I really look up to, because she’s waaaay better than me and waaaay more poetic and it puts me down...(sorry If I’m annoying). Hi Anon! (｡´∀｀)ﾉ

I’m glad you got some motivation from my words! I know exactly how you feel about comparing yourself to others. There are many people who I consider better writers than me, and seeing their works really gets me heartsick. On the one hand, I love reading their stories. On the other, it makes me feel awful because I don’t feel like I measure up to them.

It’s even worse when the writers are over a decade younger than I am. I’m 34 right now, and there are 18 year olds out there who are out-writing me both in quality and quantity. It’s heartbreaking.

I don’t know the best way to break the habit of comparing yourself to others. I’m sure it varies from person to person, but I’ll tell you what I do:

First I get upset about it. I let myself feel all my feelings, whether they be angry or sad or upset or defeated or hopeless. I let it all out. Sometimes I even cry a little, if I’m feeling particularly down and worthless. I wallow in those feelings and allow myself to feel like shit.

But here’s the trick–I don’t let that go on for more than a day. The next day, I shove all that crap away and focus on my writing.

Because here’s the thing–the more you write, the better you’ll get at it. That’s honestly the hardest truth about it. You need to be writing (almost) every day and practicing your craft. You can’t get better at anything unless you practice.

That being said, here are some ways you can help your writing and get to where you want to be:

Follow writing blogs on tumblr. I follow many and even have my own writing blog where I reblog posts to help me out. If you want to check that out, it’s @inklingsinquietcorners. Everything is tagged so it should be easy to find.

Writing blogs have great advice, and also just a lot of different points of view? Everyone has different ideas on what makes a good story, and it’s good to expand your horizons.

Another thing you should do is read what you want to write. If you read in a genre you want to write in, you will pick up cues and sentence structures. It’ll help you unconsciously know what sounds/looks/reads better.

Befriend other writers!! (Which you’re already doing when you’re talking with me! XD) But it’s important to have a support group. Find other people who write and hold onto those friends! Do things like Word Sprints, Word Wars, beta-ing each other’s fics! All these things will help you out and build a stronger writing community.

Speaking of editing, it is CRUCIAL for writing a good story. You need to know how to edit your own work. And the best way to do that is to have someone else look at it for you. Finding a trustworthy beta is important. You need to find someone who is a better writer than you (or at least on the same level). Having someone else point out your mistakes will help you correct them. I can’t tell you how many “Aha!” moments I had after mistakes were pointed out to me.

You could use Grammerly for editing your works, but it’s a subscription based service and I haven’t used it myself. I am fond of EditMinion. Not only is it free, but it doesn’t crash my browser tab like the Hemmingway app used to. (Besides, the Hemmingway app was trash. It basically had you writing like Hemmingway, which isn’t necessarily Goals™, IMO.)

I hope some of this helps. I know how hard it is to write, especially when you’re first starting out. But keep up with it and don’t lose hope! You’ll get better at it! I promise!

Poetry Tag Game

thank you @plasticgardenicons for tagging me in this game.

When did you start to write poetry?

I think I wrote my first poem when I was 6 or 7 years old, a school assignment about Australian animals. I don’t remember it and I don’t have a copy. I was heavily assisted by my mother, who was never a poet.

I wrote a few poems in high school and showed nobody. I was an English Major in the early 70s at a small state college and wrote some poems there, badly.

I don’t think I touched poetry again until much, much later. I fell in love, disastrously, with a person who turned out to be imaginary, but he set me off again and I have written nearly every day since then.

Before this recent spate of poetry, such as it is, I was writing mostly stories; I’ve been working on two novels; I write science fiction erotica sometimes. Not much poetry until very recently, like the past year.

Do you write poetic prose, free verse, or use set forms?

Mostly free verse, though I wrote an ode recently that made me happy, and I write haiku fairly often, and I’ve been flirting with writing a sonnet recently. I have a few themes that would work well for sonnets and I’m putting them on the back burner for now. I’m open to anything, and the Muse, that little rascal, leads me by the nose wherever she wants me to go.

Name 3 main themes you explore in your poetry:

I write about loneliness a distressing amount of time. I also write about love, with seductive intent. Note that if you are a ginger, I will make you blush, but you won’t mind. Not naming any names here. Oddly enough, I also write about food. I like the food ones. Not much angst to be found there most of the time.

Name 3 things that inspire you:

Nudity; friendly banter with other poets; strong feelings I can’t express directly.

Name 3 elements of nature most often mentioned in your poetry:

The night sky; wind; birds, cats, animals in general.

Name 3 words you love:

All of them.

Name 3 words you hate:

None of them, except the ones that are misused such as “anymore,” (shudder), “breath” used instead of “breathe,” and “everyday” used incorrectly instead of “every day.” I try not to be unkind, except toward people special to me who need to know better. Then, I’m brutal. Seriously, if language is your main tool, sharpen it, oil it, store it carefully. Treat it like your bread and butter, which it is.

Well, I must edit this: I dislike any use of any form of the word, “get,” or “got.” It’s the worst kind of slang that substitutes inadequately for many, many more expressive words. Erase it from your vocabulary if you are a writer and care about your literacy. If you use the word, “gotten” fairly frequently, I will drop you and probably never look at your blog again.

Do you have a preferred time of day for writing?

No, although mid-morning seems to be when I have the time, have ingested enough coffee, and have managed to shake off whatever dreams I had the night before. I often write around midnight, too, when I am home from work and all the feelings have been boiling up on the ride home. It’s a feelings-heavy job.

Do you ever run out of words to write?

Not sure how to answer this. I can always write, but if it’s trivial or stupid or I can’t make it work the way I want it to, I send it to the oubliette and try to take a break. I don’t seek out the Muse. She comes at me and won’t let me keep it if I don’t jump at her bidding.

Does your writing ever make you feel vulnerable? If so, why?

Well, um, yeah. If it didn’t, it wouldn’t be honest, would it? And one of the reasons I use Tumblr is because hardly anybody I know in real life would know to look for me here. I’ve invited a precious, trusted few, but yeah, my poems make me squirm and blush and hesitate over the Post button damn near every day. Poets need to be brave.

What is your process for self-editing?

I write it as it comes out of me, then I read it out loud, obsessively, several times, changing things that don’t ring true or that are unnecessary. I’m sort of a martinet about unnecessary verbiage in good writing and that, along with poor punctuation and grammar, raise my blood pressure. I also read and reread my own work pretty much any time somebody “likes” it, as though I were reading it along with them. I know, weird. But it works for me and I have no explanation.

Do you have a poem that’s eluded you? That, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t write?

If I find that happening, I sit back and think about why it matters to me, what is it that makes me feel the need to force it. I have to satisfy myself that it’s necessary. I have never had the problem outlast that kind of scrutiny. Either I go off on a different tack or perspective, or I decide my reasons weren’t good enough, and abandon the project.

Do you have any other social media where you showcase your poetry?

Occasionally. I had a WordPress that got me into trouble, so it’s intensely private now. I also have another WordPress that is all about NSFW/Sexual themes. I’m “yuplisnin” there. And I’m on a few sites that specialize in poetry, but I don’t keep up with them. When I feel like I have a poem I need to show people, I share it on Facebook and/or Plurk. I have friends there who appreciate my work and I want to make sure they see what I wrote sometimes.

✨2017✨

i started this blog earlier this year as an outlet for my passions and occasionally posting some of my writing. all i had planned was freaking out about marvel and its cast in the tags, and if i found people who shared the same thoughts, great!

in all of my life, never had i expected to be here, friends with such kind, thoughtful, enthusiastic, wonderfully intelligent individuals. i’ve learned so much from each of you, and the community as a whole is a lovely place to talk and spend time.

thank you all for making my 2017 better, and i wish a happy and healthy 2018 for all of you!

1. What was your dream job when you were a child?

Oh well, My dream job? When I was in third year of elementary school, my history teacher explained us about Ancient Egypt and I swear I told almost everyone I knew back then that when I’d grow up I would be a egyptologist. Still today sometimes I dream about it: I loved Egypt and egyptian mythology and being an archeologist.

2. Tell me the best dream you’ve ever had.

The best dream I’ve ever had? Mmmmh... i’m not sure, but maybe there was this time I dreamed about being locked in the old gym of my middle school in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm and chatting with a ghost while playing chess with him. He was a pretty intelligent and funny ghost, though :)

3. And now the worst nightmare.

Oh. Hate this. I’ve had plenty of nightmares. The worst was that one I had since I was a little kid in where I’m blocked in this room that has no exit but a window too up on the wall from where it falls sand or water and I die suffocated.

4. Do you believe in marriage?

Yes. Definitely yes. I don’t believe in dates, though, but I often dream about finding a nice guy - then I skip the entire dating-thing - and suddenly being married with him. And I love married couple, they’re such sweeties! <3

5. Day or night? Why?

Night. I love night. I can see the moon and the stars and night it’s such a quiet time: no one can bother me or disturb me and the air it’s cold but oh so clear. I love night.

6. If you were Pris and you had to choose which goddess was the most beautiful (we all know this myth), who would you choose? Athena and her promise for knowledge, Hera and her promise for wealth and prosperity or Aphrodite and her for the love of the most beautiful person (of your preferred gender, I’m magnanimous) on Earth?

This is hard. Very hard. I think I would choose Athena and knowledge, ‘cause knowledge it’s one of the thing I prefer, but seriously, why this question? It’s a trap. Sincerely, I think I would cut the apple in three and then give each of them a piece... Booya! You didn’t see that coming Eris!!!! Wait, is it possible to cut that damn apple in three? Gosh, hope yes...

7. Best period of your life?

The best period of my life? I think it’s now. A part from those stupid little things I’m afraid about (like my italian teacher and the notes), this is the best because I got alot of friends and I didn’t think, back then, I would have had such a lot of them. It’s astounding! And I got to travel too. Yes, holidays, but when I was a child I was not too excited about it and when I will be out of school with a husband (hopefully) I will be too much preoccupied about money and those things to fully like a voyage.

8. Why did you choose your url? Is there a meaning behind it? (Please, don’t answer ‘because I had to’, that’s what I would do.)

You know, I’ve already told you about it. The ones I liked where already taken so tumblr decided it for me. But I like this one, though, it’s nice: myblacknightworld. Poetic. And also right, I love night and black and yeah. That’s it. No meaning behind. Sorry ^^”

9. Favourite historical period?

This is hard too! Uff, my favourite period? I’ve never thought seriously about it. Some years ago I would have said Humanism, but now I think I would say Middle Age: everyone thinks that Middle Age is a bad time for humans but it’s so full of wonders and I hate the fact it’s so underrated!

10. Would you prefer to live in a big city or in the countryside?

Countryside near a big city. Well, far enaugh from the city but anyway near enaugh

11. Do you keep a diary/journal? Have you ever kept one? Why?

Nope. In elementary school I had one, but I was not keeping it right, like I wrote in it just one time in a year (well, this is exaggerating the thing, but almost). And also, I don’t know why, I just liked the idea of writing thing like I was talking to someone...
