This 1984 Teen Titans comic was the exciting conclusion to a multi-part story where they were battling something called H.I.V.E. This was a cult of people in purple druid robes who led an international network of mercenaries and assassins, who lived in an underwater dome and were all named numbers. I realize that sounds cool, but it absolutely isn't.
They were started / led by some guy, but then he married a 22-year-old blonde woman who murdered him and declared herself the leader. And the rest of them - this band of amoral assassins - just let this happen, even as she declared "none of you matters but me," and killed them every time they "failed" her.
This is in the past tense, because as soon as Nightwing and Wonder Girl go down there to punch these idiots, the blonde woman electrocuted all of her remaining people, then committed suicide. She also built a giant red missile and shot it at Atlantis, but Aqualad grabbed onto it and turned it off.
The H.I.V.E. master plan was to 1) poison all the world's oceans, 2) ???, 3) PROFIT, so it seemed like maybe that plan was going to thwart itself, really. They only seemed to have robot guns and tentacles exclusively inside their base, and also an army of loyal commandos in purple gimp outfits. But none of these could operate or breathe underwater. And all of their assassins had already failed to kill the Teen Titans. Which, no offense, but probably should haven been their first indication that they really weren't ready for primetime.
I don't know for sure who was on the Titan team at this exact point, but I DO know that Cyborg and Beast Boy (aka Changeling at this point, because ugh) don't even go on this mission. They stay back at wherever-it-is-they-live so Beast Boy can have an emotional break-down over his ex-girlfriend (Terra, some girl with floating-rock powers and a bad costume) turning evil, while Cyborg yells at him. Then a woman with pink hair wanders in.
She tells Beast Boy he's hot, and this makes Gar feel better enough to agree to not turn into a green tiger and murder people. Which was his actual plan before she showed up.
Starfire goes on the mission. This happens to her:
...Aren't they all supposed to be like 16 or 17? What are we doing here, gentlemen?
There is also a guy on the team named Jericho, who has muttonchops, dresses like every "cool" bard in every DnD campaign ever, can't talk, and can do whatever arbitrary psychic thing the plot suddenly demands of him. I had to look him up because so does everyone else.
He is apparently the son of Deathstroke, who became mute when someone after Deathstroke slashed his voicebox. His psychic powers are a result of it doesn't matter. No they don't explain why he looks like THIS in 1984:
Aqualad is also here. With his girlfriend Tula, who is Aquagirl. Who is an Atlantean cave-woman, or something...? She doesn't do much besides yell his name, and her presence in no way stops him from talking about how hot but insane Starfire is. To Nightwing. Who seems fine with this.
Dick and Wonder Girl are both here to punch and yell exposition, and they are immediately out of punches! Dick spends a quarter of the comic in a tube trying to turn off robots, which he fails to do? Or then kind of does? I've read it twice now and I'm not sure even Marv Wolfman knew what he had going on here.
Raven turns into a black void to save the Titans from drowning at the beginning of the comic. After they get out to safety, she says she's used too much power to help anymore and Poochie's on out of there.
I mean, they DO have Wonder Girl, kicking people and talking about her upcoming marriage. Who needs the incredibly powerful witch? It's fine. And easier to draw!
The art is George Perez, so it looks great, even if all these teenagers look like sexy 30-year-old adults, and half of them spend most of the comic not doing anything. The costumes are technically awful but in that 80s way that is just wonderful now. But as a conclusion to some kind of story arc, this is as mid as mid gets. There is exactly one cool splash-page battle, and it means exactly nothing.
This comic might be worth $3.50 now. It was 75 cents when it came out.
...This implies we in 2024 value this slightly more than anyone did in 1984.

while we wait out a week of voting to see who will be advancing to round 4, here's some numerical neatness from round 2!
total votes: all together, the 27 polls of round 2 received a total of 16,454 votes. hot damn!
largest percentage of votes: we didn't see quite as many astronomical defeats as we did in round 1, with only one PC winning more than 90% of the votes in any one poll (unsurprising, the choices get tougher every round!), but there were still some pretty large disparities to be seen.

*Neverafter: while Gerard lost his poll against Rue, he was passed on by virtue of being the most successful losing character for the sake of keeping the pool even for round 3, meaning that Neverafter passed on 100% of its remaining characters by technicality.

Kinda bummed next week is already the finale, I'd love eight more episodes with these Little Guys (can't wait to see what Aabria's last name for them is gonna be). The Fifth Stoat is an f'd up lady. Tore her own sisters jaw off cause she wanted more power. What a sucky person. Also I have a hunch she might be a necromancer and that the suddenly still alive stoats from ep 1 are undead infiltrators. Anyway, I'm on pins and needles waiting to see how this conflict will resolve itself and if Tula and Bennett manage to seal the deal. Two plot resolutions of equal importance. See you next week for the thrilling conclusion.
I watched this ep way later than usual because I had class on a weird day so I was brain fuzzy and when we got to the fifth stoat stuff I Was like I'm sorry WHAT? Suddenly fully alert. Yikes!
We def glossed over the old stoats being alive very quickly and I would have more thoughts about that beyond, "I need to lock this hot stoat down"--though Tula absolutely needs to lock that hot stoat down. She's been through ENOUGH. Let her have a hot boyfriend as a treat!
Wild that we're at the finale. Can't wait to see where we land!

9. slow-dancing turning into an intimate embrace
trying something new for the first time!
Tula has to admit, the humans have quite a number of nifty skills to teach the stoats. Cooking is a big one; Tula never would have guessed that causing a fire on purpose could result in anything other than disaster, but rabbit tastes incredible when browned and tossed around with what the humans call "spices." She's also become accustomed to getting around on motorized vehicles, which Tara claims are toys for human children but the stoats find incredibly useful regardless.
But dancing. Dancing is one that took Tula by surprise. She didn't get it at first, not like Jaysohn, whose natural physical abilities make him instantly a star when the music comes on. (Music is its own marvel. What is it? It feels like the blue, but...different. Better.) Tara shows her how to wiggle her body, tap her feet, bounce and leap and twirl, and okay, this is dancing. It's strange, but it's fun, even if Tula doesn't think she's any good.
She prefers watching the kids dance, anyway, Lila and Jaysohn and her nieces and nephew. They have such fun with it, throwing themselves around with abandon to what Tara calls "Wham!" and "Madonna." They tug her into their dance circles around the radio with cries of "Come on, Auntie T!" and "Stop being boring, Mom!" So she dances with them, because she is alive, she is alive.
Until Bennett walks in, fresh from a hunt and smelling like sunshine. She pulls up short, face getting hot. "Bennett! Hi! How are things!" Why does she sound like this?
Bennett's face furrows. "What is...happening?"
"It's dancing!" Jaysohn shouts over the music, spinning Rosie around on his feet. "It's fun!"
"Dancing?" Bennett's ears twitch, his head turning to better hear the song.
"Do you know how to dance, Bennett?" Tara asks. She's sitting on the floor of Last Bast back against the wall, toes tapping together as she watches the kids jump around.
"I...don't...think so?"
Just then, the song ends, and a new one starts, this one slower, sweeter, like honey, Tula thinks. Tara nudges her with her foot. "Go on, dance with him!"
Tula chokes. "What?"
"Go, give it a shot."
On her hind legs, Tula walks over to Bennett, who looks at her uncertainly. She extends her paws to him, which he takes, and then they start to sway, a slow, awkward turn that isn't really in time to the music. Tula isn't sure who's more uncomfortable of the two of them, but considering it's her family giggling mischievously behind them, she's gonna say she is.
But then Bennett murmurs, "This is nice," and Tula nearly trips over her own feet.
"Is it? I mean, it is. Yes. Nice."
Bennett is new to dancing, but somehow he's the one leading her around, a slow, gentle spin that's making Tula feel warm in new, confusing ways. Before she knows it, the music is stopping, but instead of stepping apart, Tula leans in, half-draped along Bennett, who curls his front legs around her in the first hug she's had from a man since she lost Geoffrey. They stand there like that, holding each other, for a few breaths, until there's a loud, "OOOOOOOOOOH, THEY LIKE EACH OTHER!" and Tula coughs, stepping back.
"Well. That was...okay I should go!" Before Bennett can say anything, Tula bounds away, fur on fire, suddenly very sure that this "music" really is its own kind of Blue, after all.

If you had to give Garth a new friend group who would it be?
that's rough.....
because honestly part of his charm is that he's extremely maidenless... well not maidenless he Is pulling hot babes left and right but friends?? ooh boy,,,
i wouldn't want to take away the fab five from him, despite how poorly they treat him at times. However, i do think it would've been really cool to see him with the new teen titans! i completely understand why he wasn't with them at that point, like i get it. but just from a character relations perspective, i do think this would've been a natural next step if he wasn't so self-deprecating (and busy in atlantis). dick and donna were consistently the nicest to him out of the fab five so he gets to keep some of that previous dynamic. wally is also there but,, roy isn't!!! no offense to roy i like him on his own but he was a big reason why garth left in the first place so. yknow.
but anyway, garth does have good relationships with kori, garfield, and victor. and i guess raven too but we don't really see that,, like ever. he's obviously not close to them, but they're not mean to him. which is a big thing for garth! kori seems to hold him in high regard too, at least after he becomes tempest, so it would've been nice to see their relationship actually progress to the point where she trusts him like that. like in the titans (1999) issue 19 where she says she trusts him with her life. like. what the fuck!! there are also multiple issues where garth and garfield have a little friendship going on (that one panel where garfield yells at arthur gives me so much life adghlj). and there are a few cute moments between garth and victor.
i really don't think he'd become like,, besties or family with any of them, but if i really had to give him More friends, i think they would've been the safest bet.
within the confines of underwater,,, letifos Should come back. idc if they're dating or not, but she should just always be there. for Me, personally <3 i think it'd be hilarious if tula and dolphin also came back at the same time. it'd never happen but who cares. the four of them can be in some weird polycule together aldhg

i am so easy to fool. i had no bad vibes about the last bast until the trailer for next episode played. i was sitting there thinking, alright, they’re gonna team up with those stoats and the humans are going to attack and they’re gonna fight the people and win and tula is gonna finally get help and a life outside of taking care of her kids in the form of a hot stoat boyfriend and viola is gonna have her babies and those babies are gonna have the coolest cousins and auntie and grandma and also honorary uncle oliver and auntie teedles and nothing bad will ever happen again

Wentja Morgan Napaltjarri and her universe.
Wentja Napaltjarri was born at Malparinga about 1943, and grew up west of Kintore in her father's country, located in the Gibson Desert.
Wentja is the daughter of one of the founders of the Desert painting movement, Shorty Lungkata Tjungarrayi and one of his wives, Napulu Nangala. Wentja Napaltjarri has several sisters who are also well known artists; including step-sister Linda Napaltjarri Syddick (born c. 1936), adopted by Shorty Lungkata as a young girl, when he married her widowed mother. When Wentja Napaltjarri was young, her father and uncle, along with their families including Wentja travelled east in the footsteps of the Ancestral Emu Men of Tingarri cycles, out of the desert.
They travelled from water to water. It was hot weather time in the Gibson Desert and there was little water to be found. This area is dominated by high tali [sandhills], so knowledge of the exact location of kapi [water], whether hidden rockholes, claypans, natural springs, or soakages, was critical for survival. Wentja Napaltjarri and her family successfully navigated their journey out of the desert to join other relatives in settlements at Haasts Bluff Mission Outpost about 1948. The family then moved to Papunya around 1960. As with so many Pintupi families, Wentja’s extended family established a strong artistic voice in Pintupi culture. While at Haasts Bluff, Wentja met her husband, Ginger Tjakamarra, who was the son of the artist Makin Napanangka. The couple eventually moved to Papunya, where Shorty Langkata apprenticed each of his daughters.
Wentja’s first works were collaborative, helping out the men in the family with their work. While they painted the stories, Wentja did the dotting in-fill, characteristic of the Papunya Tula artists.
Eventually, Wentja lived at Watiyawanu [New Bore], Mt Liebig with her husband and with her children. Wentja began her own career there, painting for Watiyawanu Artists. Wentja mostly paints Tingarri and Kapi Tjukurrpa, the iconography for which has been handed down to her by her father. She also paints Tali [sandhills], Puli [rockholes], Watiya Tjuta [Desert Oaks], and other landmarks central to her Country, and her father’s Country. Wentja has a very distinctive style and her work highly sought by the Australian and international art collectors. Her work has been exhibited in leading Australian and international exhibitions, including the 2003 exhibition Masterpieces from the Western Desert, in London.

Any headcanons for BW Megs?
-He loves being pampered like the queen he is. Infe/rno is definitely the one feeding and pampering him obviously.
-Sassy feedee.
-Most of the fat is on the lower parts of his body (waist, hips, thighs, butt). Yes his T/rex mode definitely has gotten rounder.
-Relaxes in his hot tub to digest. He just floats with his rubber duck safely resting on his belly.
-He's definitely accidentally sat on Wasp/inator more than once.
-Taran/tulas had been trying to pitch him the idea of a diet. This ended up with Infe/rno going with Megs on morning jogs as "emotional support".

not to be anti-Ocean Master Helmet (I love that stupid helmet y’know) and this is kind of a hot take but I think it would be neat if Orm had a mask one day in comics like Tula’s except in silver instead of gold like hers
(also kind of similar to when his helmet broke)
idk I just think it would be an interesting thing to do so he doesn’t have to wear his helmet 24/7. He would still wear the helmet most of the time though. Maybe it could be a design used for when he’s a “good guy” lol

Do you have any reading recs for Tula as Aquagirl? I just read a few issues of the Wolfman/Peréz teen titans run that she appeared in and I’ve decided that she’s awesome and badass and I want to read more of her, actually. So naturally I came to the local Aquaman expert.
If not that’s okay too, don’t feel pressured to answer this.
I also adore Tula but I regret to inform you that Tula does not act as Aquagirl in very many comics. Despite her significance to Garth and his story arc, she’s not actually a major part of many storylines. She IS particularly charming when she appears in Titans comics tho (she’s absolutely seen as Garth’s hot older gf which like….I’m not complaining about because that’s exactly why she was created)
I would suggest reading Aquaman vol 1 and her role in Crisis. My hot take is that reboot Tula is really boring but is anyone surprised by that? No. Don’t read reboot anything.
Tula is great in Tempest (1996) and did you really think I was going to give a comic rec without mentioning that?

omg ok. sorry ivbe forgotten how to feel bad now that youve invoked my ocs. icarus is just some fucking guy. i cannot stress this enough. but theyre also pretty fucked divinely speaking!
so basically icarus is a direct descendant of enki the keeper. this is all fine and good except they hate it so goddamn much. they dont like enki at all. so they decided to dye their white hair black and travel the world to get as far away from their little galruk island as possible as basically a big fuck you to the god they dont care for. bevause their whole childhood revolved around this lineage and they dont want anything to do with it!!! so they travel
for a while icarus is just kinda...... out there. doing fuckall. but then kulzak takes notice of them n blesses them with immortality becayse this is actually kind of hilarious. they dont know theyre immortal but now they rlly cant die so thats a great plus !
the only way they actually connect to the mcd plot is......... really rather slim. their whole timeline lines up with season 1 and the fifteen year timeskip is spent wandering the world. their favorite region is tula because its hot and theres cat people. theyre kindof an idiot and anyone who meets them is actively shocked about how long theyve survived on pure dumbassery alone. theyre also a witch and everything they know is through trial and error. classically trained witches are horrified by their methods
