Before QSMP, I had DSMP

Before Spiderbit, I had Karlnapity

…

I remember when I first learned about Karlnapity really fondly, and it was genuinely the first time I’ve learnt about polyamorous relationships. I saw throughout stream clips that they all loved each other and had adorable interactions. They were fiancés and had plans on having a wedding

But it never happened

They lacked communication skills. Karl didn’t tell Sapnap or Quackity about the fact that he’s a time traveller and that he loses his memory every time he travels to the past. Karl and Quackity got into an argument because Karl forgot about him while Sapnap had to watch both of the people he loved dearly argue with each other. And yet, I still thought they’d pull through…

But it never happened

DSMP ended and they never got a happy ending, they never got to reconcile and actually communicate

They never got their wedding

So I did whatever anyone else would do when canon fails them, and read fanfics. Fanfics where they lived together in domestic bliss, fanfics where they met in a different universe but still fell in love, fanfics where they got their wedding

…

But then, something new came up

In all honesty, I knew about QSMP ever since Quackity announced it and it seemed really interesting too, but since I was (and still am) in High School, I couldn’t really catch up. So I mainly relied on liveblogs to help guide my way throughout its story. It wasn’t much but at least it was something. And I was semi-interested in what was happening on the first multilingual server in Minecraft

And then, June 1st happened

Cellbit proposed to Roier and they had plans on getting married. Part of me was excited that those two were gonna tie the knot and become husbands, but on the other hand, I had a feeling this might be karlnapity all over again. And low and behold, the wedding got called off

But, things went differently this time

They managed to reconcile after the wedding got called off (ngl I’d forgive my fiancé too if found out that my relative [which said fiancé murdered] was still alive /j) and they even went on a date. And then Cellbit proposed to Roier again, and Roier accepts

I finally managed to watch a QSMP stream live on the 16th of June, and it was one of the best things I have ever seen. People dressed their cubitos up for the big day, Cellbit walked down the isle to the alter where his husband waited for him, and they were pronounced married, they kissed each other and walked hand in loveable hand to where they had a wedding cake, they tossed their bouquets, and they sang a duet that forever changed how I listen to ‘The Reason’ by Hoobastank

They finally got their wedding

And I couldn’t have been any happier.

heya op from the karlnapity number 1 post, i want to hear the theories you have as to why it got so popular it would sound interesting!

oh wow did not expect anyone to actually want to hear about this. thanks for asking!

so first thing, in terms of numbers on this: when i initially looked at this, i guessed at popular poly ships and figured out from this that karnapity was big; this time, i used @/toastystats' analysis from may 2021 to figure out big poly ships and then cross referenced their current numbers with karlnapity's-- they're ahead by at least 1000 works from the (presumed) next biggest poly ship, Bucky/Steve/Tony from the MCU.

This is super impressive! DSMP on AO3 has been one of the fastest growing fandoms in the last couple of years (toasty has stats about that as well, as does @/ao3-anonymous who does weekly fandom growth stats) and has absolutely exploded in terms of amount of works, though it's a bit hard to quantify due to only receiving its own fandom tag recently. Still, competing with the MCU, BTS, & BNHA, to name a few fandoms, is impressive as it's still such a new fandom compared to how long they've been around and been able to gather works.

In regard to why I think Karlnapity is popular, and to compare it to other popular poly ships, I think there's a few factors. In no particular order:

#1 - This one's easy. DSMP is hugely popular right now, and Karlnapity is one of a few significant canon ships in the world of the server. Other big ships (DNF, tntduo, beeduo, etc.) have less canonical status or are in some way fraught with RPF issues.

#2 - The ship is M/M/M. If you look at the stats I link above from toasty, M/M/M by far dominates poly ships, with F/M/M a ways behind. As you probably know, ships involving women tend to be far less popular, and vice versa.

#3 - This is where we get into my actual juicy analysis. The biggest reason I think Karlnapity is huge is it's canonical status, which is BY FAR what distinguishes it from other poly ships.

Below is a list of the biggest poly ships, as of May 2021 (again, from toasty, linked above). Obviously Karlnapity has shot up in terms of stats, but this provides us with a solid basis for other poly ships.

Most of the other popular poly ships are non-canonical ships, with the basis of the ship being people want ot3s and there's three central characters in these pieces of media (Bucky/Steve/Tony, Castiel/Dean/Sam, Poe/Finn/Rey, Hermione/Harry/Ron). For BTS, it's a similar situation but instead of three main characters the band has 7 members.

The two ships that are canonical/semi-canonical (depending on your interpretation of things like word of god and possible retconning) are Karlnapity and Hardison/Parker/Eliot. I'll start with the latter; feel free to skip this paragraph if you don't want to read through me talking about Leverage.

If you're not a Leverage fan, you probably are not familiar with this OT3 and may be confused about its popularity considering it is a MUCH smaller fandom than the other ones (only ~9k total fics). Hardison/Parker/Eliot is also the #1 ship in the Leverage fandom tag, whereas the rest of these are generally quite a bit further down in the ship tags. The reason for this is that the relationship dynamic on the show is very intimate, I would say a majority of leverage fans ship the ot3 without question, AND the creators have on multiple occasions encouraged and endorsed the ship. Additionally, they have made the ship canonical (in a sense) by stating that the finale of the original show was meant to end with the three of them in a relationship, so they hold a semi-canonical, word of god status in that sense. However, for much of the show, only Hardison and Parker are explicitly dating and it is my understanding that in the recent revival that is still the case (haven't watched it yet, planning to soon). Still, it is far more canonical than most of the other ships on this list, which is why it's so high up despite being a smaller fandom, and this feeds into why I think Karlnapity is so popular.

Okay! Back to Karlnapity!

Karlnapity is the only ship on this list that has full, in-canon support for it being a romantic, polyamorous ship. That is, as you probably know, incredible rare in fandoms of this size. The three of them are romantically & phsyically affectionate (when they were together) and explicitly involved, which cannot be said for any other ship on the list above.

All this to say, the biggest reasons Karlnapity is so popular are that the fandom is hugely popular right now, the ship involves men, and the relationship is canon.

ok i really want to ramble about Schlatt in this au, he’s arguably the most interesting and put together character in the au, and he kinda ties all the different groups of characters (dream team, the fiancés, benchtrio, Charlie and Ted, Wilbur, etc) together, but i’m still in a big karlnapity mood so i’m sticking with them.

and yeah i’ll be talking some more about vore stuff but that’s not gonna be everything i swear

it’s all under the cut cause it’s long (of course it is i’m me and i’ve never shortened anything in my life)

Ok so i mentioned this in the tags of the previous post but in case anyone didn’t read those: Karl is a ermine hybrid. Wild ermines turn white in the winter to better blend in with snow. Therefore Karl’s hair, tail, and the fur on his hands, feet, and ears (which are rounded and animalistic btw) turn a really light platinum blonde/white. Yes this is because of the bleach-blonde Karl phase. Also because of the hybrid genes, when Karl doesn’t get enough sun (like in winter months), he gets pale quicker than most people do. He also has more animalistic feet and has finger and toe beans!

Anyway, Sapnap is big on noms in this au. Karl really likes dark, tight spaces cause of his instict to hide in burrows, so he is just predestined to like noms cause of his biology. Sapnap is more than willing to oblige him after he learns it’s safe (Dream tells him it’s alright, after completely making sure that Sapnap knows that if he ever tries to nom him, he’s a dead man. And Sapnap believes wholeheartedly that Dream not only means it but could actually kill him.)

Now for the interesting bit: Quackity could be nommed, given that he’s a shifter, but neither Sapnap nor Karl know he’s a shifter. Only Schlatt knows, cause of backstory stuff. But after Q’s trauma, which i mentioned in a previous post, he refuses to shrink. Being a shifter is pretty uncommon, but being a human with hybrid features is impossible. Thank god his boyfriends are idiots. Or rather, Sapnap doesn’t know anything about hybrids and Karl didn’t grow up around borrowers and even now only knows one other normal borrower (Dream), so how would he know?

Anyway, Quackity does nom Karl though. After some pleading from Karl and Sapnap trying to convince him it’s safe, he eventually relents. Not because they asked him to, but because he was getting just a little bit jealous of the time Sapnap and Karl were spending together.

After Quackity noms him a few times and he’s a tiny bit more used to it, pranks start. Karl hides in food, tries to force his way down his throat in the middle of the night, or even try to gaslight Q into swallowing him (as politely as possible, though, this is Karl we’re talking about).

Sapnap is in on it, too. He tries to get Quackity to admit that it’s nice (Quackity does think it’s nice, he won’t admit it), continuously helps Karl get in stupider hiding spots to get eaten from, and has even hidden Karl in his mouth and then kissed Quackity and Karl took that opportunity fairly quickly. Q was a flustered mess and wouldn’t talk to either of them for the rest of the day. He didn’t even let Karl out, he just didn’t talk to him.

Quackity was nommed when he was really really little, cause that’s normal for baby avians, but hasn’t been nommed since. However, he does have a crop, and he instinctually loves having things in it, especially living things. He used to hate that cause of how morbid it was and how much it made him feel like a monster, but after he starts going out with Karl, he learns that it’s maybe not so bad.

However, Quackity doesn’t put him in his crop that much. Normally he just swallows him down to his stomach like Sapnap does, cause if he noms him when Sapnap’s around, Sap would probably find it a bit odd that Q is storing Karl in an organ he doesnt have, and Quackity wants him to think he’s as human as possible. However, if it’s late at night and Sapnap is already asleep, Quackity sends Karl to the pouch. It’s not like Karl can tell the difference between the crop and stomach anyway.

Karl is pretty tall for a borrower, and his tail is fluffier and thicker than most borrower tails, so it can be a bit of a challenge to actually swallow him, but Q and Sapnap are nothing if not persistent. Well, Sapnap is. Q has an easier time swallowing things cause of hybrid reasons and birds are weird, but Sapnap is just built different ig. Anyway, Karl, being a bigger borrower, leaves a bump in both his boyfriends tums cause i’m a sucker for slightly larger than average prey. Sapnap’s tum is smaller than Q’s, so the bump Karl makes in Sap’s belly is just a bit more noticeable.

Sapnap loves this, he loves feeling the extra weight in his gut caused by the man he loves, and he loves walking or just doing any general movement cause it makes it easier to feel Karl snug inside him. He’ll nom Karl just go to the store or take a hike cause with every step he takes he can feel the minute jostling and steady breathes of his boyfriend, and he lives for it. He also wears hoodies a lot when he actually goes in public with Karl tucked away, cause he tends to absentmindedly rub the bump Karl makes and when he does this without his hand being hidden by a pocket he gets weird looks.

Quackity likes just about the opposite. He could 100% do without the extra weight in his stomach, and when he noms Karl he tends to just pick a place and sit there for a while, only getting up if necessary. He hates the swaying, drooping feeling in his gut, and tries to prevent that. Sapnap, as much as he loves it, knows how much Q hates it so whenever he noms Karl Sapnap makes sure to be around to get Q whatever he needs so he doesn’t have to get up. Quackity and Karl call that “simp behavior,” but Quackity loves the attention. Also, Q loves to just lay down and feel Karl. He’ll slow down his breathes and suck in his stomach slightly just to feel Karl better, and he loves it. It’s like giving his little boyfriend a hug from all sides, especially if Quackity decides he’s gonna lay face down. After all, Karl doesn’t mind getting a little squished, and he can feel him so much better that way. Q also rarely lifts his hand from his stomach when Karl’s in there. At least one hand must be over the tiny hybrid at all times, cause his instincts flare up at the internal movement and some primitive part of him (probably the part that sees anything being stored in him as a chick) says that whatever’s in there must be protected at all costs and damn if Q isn’t a slave to his instincts.

It doesn’t matter which boyfriend has Karl, the other will either be soft or make fun of them both. I’m also a big sucker for a third person in a vore scenario, so if, for example, Q sees Sapnap sleeping with a hand over a more full than usually belly, you’d better believe that Quackity is going to drop everything he was doing and nap with them. And if Sapnap wakes up to see Q asleep with his head laying over his stomach, he just takes a quick blackmail photo and goes back to sleep with his boyfriends. On the other end of the spectrum, Sapnap has on multiple occasions blasted and airhorn while Quackity was just vibing with Karl, causing all of Q’s muscles to tense and Karl to get squished. Quackity retaliated a few days later by pulling the same kiss trick i mentioned earlier, when he saw Sapnap about to swallow Karl so he kissed him and managed to pull Karl into his mouth and swallow him instead. Sapnap was a weird mix of kinda flustered, a little frustrated, and a lot impressed.

I’m now realizing that i didn’t talk much about what Karl thought about noms other than he instigated them most of the time (tho Sapnap is starting to rival him in that regard). Karl doesn’t purr like some borrowers do, but when he’s really happy and really stuck in his insticts he kinda chitters, and Sapnap and Q think it’s the cutest noise in the world. He also tastes a teeny bit sour, but mostly sweet and rich. Like if you turned a jolly rancher into ice cream. Karl also gets stuck in instict frenzies sometimes, and will give no warning as he looks for the nearest and most comforting enclosed space to be in. 99% of the time it’s one of the fiancés, no matter how far they are. Also, when i mentioned Quackity and Sapnap playing pranks on each other, Karl plays better pranks on both of them. He has covered himself in squirt-able sour candy, has brought stupid things into their stomachs, the whole nine yards. However, they always get back at him. He can’t count the number of times Sapnap has held onto the end of his tail in the midst of swallowing him.

all in all, the three of them have an interesting relationship that i adore and thank you for giving me an excuse to throw my vore obsessed brain’s ideas at my keyboard hsjskskshsj

Senior! He could’ve graduated early but 1) he wanted to stay in theatre longer and 2) he wanted to take more free AP/college classes.

Studying to become a law student! Yes, with that and AP classes and theatre and general life things, he is hating life a little bit at the moment but he will be okay. Everyone turns out okay in this AU /gen :)

By far one of the best actors in the cast. He’s inspiringly hard-working and has incredible on-stage instincts.

He’s very typecast as the comedic relief/sidekick, and while his instincts and skillset do work best for this type of role, he is also very capable of more serious roles. He wants more than anything to prove himself as something more than just a laugh in his final year with the theatre.

^ A desperate man is a dangerous man. Quackity’s not there yet, but he’s pretty close to his fucking limits.

PTSD! I have not worked out the specifics of this, nor do I currently intend to, but it is canon to the AU. He is extremely secretive about his struggles, but he has recently started therapy and hopes to open up to his loved ones soon.

Speaking of his loved ones… Karlnapity WINS in this AU! Those fuckers are in a healthy polyamorous relationship and it is fucking endgame, end of story.

…Except that is not the end of the story because it’s my AU and I get to chose the happy ending. Karl, Sapnap, and Quackity are all dating each other, and Quackity is also… doing… something… with Wilbur?

What the fuck is going on with Wilbur? Karl and Sapnap smile all goofy and tease that Quackity is totally in love with Wilbur. Tommy swears up and down he caught them making out in the props closet once. The culprits themselves claim they hate each other.

The general consensus on Quackity and Wilbur is that whatever’s going on it’s definitely fruity.

Eret and Quackity pretended to date each other as an elaborate April Fools prank last year, complete with a full week of buildup culminating in a massive scripted breakup in front of the entire theatre on April Fools day. This has since turned around on them, as to this day they get asked if they’re still together.

Schlatt and Quackity for real dated during the summer between sophomore and junior year. Nobody heard from Quackity most of that summer, and he’s never spoke of it since. He’s avoided Schlatt to the best of his abilities ever since.

Tubbo knows what happened. Tubbo knows everything that has happened to everyone.

Wilbur also knows. His knowledge is more assumption-based and not as complete as Tubbo’s but he does know.

(This is basically just the Manberg cabinet arc minus the politics and Schlatt dying.)

I will definitely do more for Quackity but this is really long already and I’ve got other ideas to put down, so enjoy this for now!

Fun dads! Karl is definitely the softest for you while Sapnap is the most attentive.

Karl is very playful and gets you all sorts of toys. He encourages you to play outside and just enjoy your time, leading you on tame explorations around Kinoko. He forages with you and helps you identify different kinds of mushrooms and plants.

Karl occasionally tells stories of times long past with foggy eyes and an odd tone.

He makes soup with you and makes you breakfast. He's not the best cook in the house but he does make good mushroom soup.

Sapnap likes to play rough, encouraging games involving sports or physical activity of any kind. You wanna play knights? He makes you a cardboard sword to swing around (no matter if you're a knight or princess), and he's the big bad dragon you've gotta defeat! He enjoys picking you up and swinging you around– of course he's never too rough but he tends to throw you around a bit.

He also likes lots of sports– soccer, basketball, football, etc. If you're an active kid, he'll play whatever you want all day.

Sapnap also makes sure you can defend yourself, and teaches you how to fight against mobs. He always keeps a watchful eye on you whenever you're out and about, but he knows you can handle yourself when night falls.

Quackity can be distant and quiet at times, but when he's around he showers you with gifts and praise. He gives you toys, expensive clothing, trinkets– basically whatever you want, he'll get.

He also tells you stories and brings back souvenirs whenever he goes to Las Nevadas. He often reads from books but also talks of his colleagues and any humorous incidents that have happened to him.

His softer side comes out in these moments– he loves making you laugh, seeing your face light up makes his whole week.

Quackity is banned from the kitchen, thus your days with him are spent going out and shopping or meeting up with Quackity's friends. He spoils you with anything you have your eye on, even if you don't ask for anything.

If you're more creative than active, Quackity gets you lots of books for you to read, on whatever subject you like. Space? Dinosaurs? Nature? He can get those. Fiction books, fantasy, horror? Sure!

Karl will gladly color or draw with you, taking great delight when you show him your drawings and making a big show of it.

"Oh, what's this?? Oh, [Name], this is amazing! Literally, like, Mona Lisa quality, what the heck! I'm putting this up on the fridge!"

Every drawing is posted on the fridge with little magnets, proudly displaying your creativity. Sapnap and Quackity both compliment your skills, Sapnap ruffling your hair or giving you a noogie.

"Look at our little artist!"

"Woah, the world's gotta watch out. We've got a master in the works."

Days where the whole family is together can be chaotic. Dinners are lively and you get a lot of attention. Sapnap is the main cook of the household, and food cooked by him is full of love for his family. If you're a picky eater, he caters to your needs, but encourages you to branch out if you ever want to.

If you fall ill, they're all there to support you. Sapnap tends to you at every complaint (albeit telling you not to be so dramatic), Karl makes you some soup, and Quackity gets your medicine.

Nightmares are similar-- Sapnap and Quackity both advise you to fight back against whatever scary monster is in your dreams. Quackity tries to comfort you by telling you it's not real, or by reading you a story. Karl offers to sit and listen if you want to talk about it, and gives nice, warm hugs.

George and Dream make money off twitch and youtube revenue. Dream specifically off youtube, where the content hes making for people is minecraft videos focusing on his skills and relationship with his friends that make it fun. George also makes youtube revenue where he does the same, and also from twitch. He doesnt sit dream down to make out w him on screen or purposefully make himself seem gay to get more donos

Also more than just dnf do this have you seen a single yard podcast im sorry to take us to the big picture but men think its the funniest thing in the world to suck and fuck each other like game grumps supermega yard podcast even all the way back to team crafted (merome FTW!!)

The thing they (dteam, dtk, this sphere of content creation) are selling is their friendships amd content. Dnf arent pretending to be dating, theyre just being themselves. Nobody seriously says karlnap are queerbaiting, or sylvee and hannah, or sam and ponk. Like its just a dumb as fuck argument all around in every way real people cant queerbait its for fiction and fiction only

so sorry to break into ur house like this but i need u to know that i am Still thinking about ur karlnapitybur post. dee rebelpeas You Get Me. aro cquackity and qpr tntduo yesyesyes. q who never stops loving karlnap but who has to leave them in order to do things right, to figure out what that love means, what shape it takes. lovelovelove the angle of tntduo where neither of them are trying to be Good Enough for each other, they've seen each other at their worsts and then some already, and they've stayed. so here they are together at the bottom of the world, building things up from the bottom. learning what it is to love, what it means to lean on each other, what it means to be loved by each other & others. they mean the World to me.

please break into my home ANY TIME to talk about karlnapitybur i always want to talk about it yes yes yes. you’re so right anon you Understand Me you Get It. i am shaking your hand soo enthusiastically. i can be soooo unnormal about cquackity’s relationship with. relationships and aromanticism and AUGH. to Me, quackity views being in a relationship and the specific things that looks like — the commitment, the affection, romantic, sexual, everything else — as an expectation, not even from anyone else but himself. and combined with his first real relationship being with schlatt, who expected nothing but perfect compliance and an ideal image, i think there’s no way q could have ended up with anything but this warped view of love as a series of expectations and services to perform. points at him This Guy Struggles With Emotional Vulnerability On Every Level.

and the thing is, i think karlnapity are three people genuinely good for one another who genuinely love and care for each other — it’s just that they all kind of suck a little bit and are each actively going through the worst shit of their lives, and rather than lean on each other to help bear one another’s hardships, they let it isolate them. quackity is wrapped up in his desire to prove that he’s meeting these expectations he believes are required of him (and even when he’s distant, he’s building las nevadas as this big show of still doing things for them, even if they never really wanted that; they just wanted him around). karl’s time-traveling is for them, for the people he loves, but there’s that same lack of reliance on the others to let them see it, or maybe fear that they wouldn’t like it — he loves them too much to let them stop him. and sapnap is the unquestioning protector, forever and always, without a listening ear to understand who he’s protecting.

I see God in healing bones

“Why didn’t you come to me first, Sapnap? You know George doesn’t know a thing about healing. Would’ve saved you a lot of pain.”

In the sanctuary of our homes

Sapnap sinks down in his seat, a deep blush spreading up through his neck and cheeks. He shouldn’t be embarrassed, but the feeling still washes over him as Karl lectures him on potion safety. He feels like a little kid, listening to the other man go on about the dangers of mixing up ingredients.

I see God in the wilderness

A few hours earlier, Sapnap had been exploring the Nether and made the mistake of falling face first into a lava pool. He’d run to George in a panicked daze, which also turned out to be a mistake. George’s solution was to throw a potion of healing at him, which would have worked…if it were actually a potion of healing. George had mistakenly grabbed a potion of harming, instead, leading to Sapnap being blinded.

(George apologized profusely and brought him to Karl.)

In our magnetism to recklessness

“Sorry…”

Sapnap’s voice comes out a little more timid than usual, and Karl seems to take notice, softening his tone as he speaks to Sapnap.

“It’s okay. Glad George got you to me before the damage was made permanent.”

Karl unwraps the cloth bandages around Sapnap’s head and stares. Sapnap’s face is marred with pink, but nothing looks too bad. He assumes most of the damage was done by the harming potion. Cloudy eyes stare back at Karl, and he can’t help but wonder what Sapnap can see right now, if anything.

After a while, it all runs together

“This might tingle a bit.”

Karl reaches into the little glass enclosure on his nightstand, holding it still until something lands on his palm.

Our stained-glass means nothing without light

A little butterfly, purple and black, painted with colorful spots, teal and orange and yellow and pink. It shimmers under the sunlight coming through the window.

Karl brings the butterfly up to Sapnap’s face, and it crawls onto the bridge of his nose, delicate wings resting over his eyes.

I see God in our damaged good

Sapnap wrinkles his nose. “Tickles.”

Karl laughs softly under his breath.

“Don’t touch it. It’ll take a few hours to get your sight back, until then you should rest, okay? You can stay here.”

But you see God in ways I wish I could

Sapnap nods and leans back.

They sit in silence for a while, until Sapnap speaks quietly.

“Thank you, Karl.”

“Of course, Sap.”
