#also it isn't cringy

I propose this as a prompt, feel free to ignore it if it's too cringy but some tropes are just too damn satisfying to ignore: during a quest, Nico loses all his memories of Percy (including that they're husbands) and can't even remember who is that beautiful stranger with sad green eyes. The only way to cure him? a true love kiss! (cheesy I know). What will Perseus do? seduce his husband back? (personally I think a Nico pov would be interesting but it's your call really, you can make anything interesting).
"Give. Them. Back." The man (Percy, he said his name was Percy) said as he gripped his sword tighter, pressing it against the god's throat.
Nico didn't understand what the big deal was. True, he may have some lagoons in his memory here and there, but he spent most of his teenage years not remembering his own mother's face. He still remembered Hazel, and Jason, and Reyna. The important things were still there.
So why was this Percy person so incensed with restoring his memory?
Zelus laughed at him.
"I didn't take anything, godling," he said haughtily. "The object I asked Nico to fetch for me had a powerful seal on it. Once he retrieved it, the seal moved, blocking the memory of whatever person he was thinking of."
"You did this on purpose," Percy said, standing back. "You just had to have your revenge on Nico!"
Nico blinked. Yes, he had done this quest for Zelus to not have the god of romantic jealousy mad at him but... the last time he remembered feeling that was back when his ex-boyfriend got too close to his patients, ages ago...
Why had it mattered to Nico to fix that now?
"The seal was placed by Anteros," the god spat at the name. "His magic can only be undone by a kiss of love returned."
Percy made a 'Ha!' sound and turned towards Nico, who closed his eyes as the god disappeared in an explosion of light.
"Hear that, Nico?" Percy said with a smile. He stepped closer to him. "I guess the way to bring your memory back was easier than we thought!"
"I mean, yeah, eventually," Nico said, getting a step back. He wasn't used to strangers cramping his personal space. "Thanks for helping me out, Percy, you really didn't have to."
Nico hadn't asked him. He had just asked him who he was when he found him louging on his apartment. A talk later and he had demanded to be taken to Zelus, sword-pen (neat trick, Nico wondered if he could write with it) already in hand.
Percy deflated and offered his hand again.
"Let's go back home, okay?" He asked gently. "We'll fix up everything there."
For some reason, he couldn't look away from Percy's eyes. Sea green, like the still waters in tropical paradises, but also darkened by a sadness that Nico couldn't comprehend.
He knew he lived with Percy, that was pretty obvious now, but why did he look so sad about Nico forgetting him?
He took Percy's hand gingerly and went back to the familiar shadow of his apartment. Before he could even find his center again Percy was hugging him, making Nico tense up.
"Um, Percy?" He asked awkwardly. "Are we... the kind of roommates who hug?"
It was very unbelievable. Nico didn't like people hugging him, much less people he wasn't family with.
"Right... Nico, can I kiss you?" he said suddenly. Nico's mind blanked.
He pushed him away.
"Um... listen, guy, you're cute, okay? Like, really, really cute," he said, looking at Percy lieing down on the floor with his legs spread and... yeah, that gave him some ideas. "And I know we live together but... I don't know you."
"That's the thing, Nico," he said. "If we kiss, you might remember me... we don't just live together. We're more than roommates."
"You mean like, we were dating or something?" He asked. He wondered how long they had been together.
"Try newlyweds," Percy said, a sad smile on his pretty face. "We got married three months ago."
Nico felt like he was kicked in the stomach by a cyclops.
"I married a stranger?!" He asked. "Why? I'm sure I'd remember that!"
"We're not strangers Nico!" Percy said, standing up. Nico backed away towards the kitchen. "We have known each other for years! I rescued you from Dr. Thorn with Thalia, I'm Tyson's older brother! We know each other!"
Nico paused. He looked at Percy again, trying to recall even a glimpse of him but...
Nothing. Just those amazing, beautiful, sad, green eyes.
"Okay, I can't believe I'm trusting you," he said. Those eyes wouldn't let him believe otherwise. "So if we're... married, that means us kissing is going to bring my memories back, right?"
Percy nodded. His sad eyes seemed alight with hope.
"Okay... go ahead," he closed his eyes and lightly puckered his lips. Bracing himself for the worst. He felt Percy's lips on his.
It was nice.
Very nice, actually. It was exactly how he liked to be kissed. Percy and him must have really loved each other.
A few seconds later, PErcy moved away, looking more hopeful than ever.
Nico shook his head.
"I'm sorry," he said. Percy's face fell. "It was a good kiss. Probably the best kiss I've ever had, but... I don't love you, Percy, I barely know you."
He expected many things, for those sad eyes to come back with a vengeance, for him to leave, ot maybe to get angry.
He didn't expect Percy to grin like a maniac and take his hand.
(Seriously, who did non-mindwiped Nico marry?!)
"That's okay, Ni," he said, thousand watt smile in place. "You fell in love with me once, you can fall in love with me again!"
"Huh?"
"Nico di Angelo, are you free tonight?"
Nico should say no. Nico should stay away and get used to the fact that he didn't remember his husband and maybe that was for the better.
But... he was trying so hard. And behind that smile, he could see some desperation in those beautiful eyes that had already charmed him...
He'd really like to remember this man, he realized. He'd like to know what he loved about him.
"As a matter of fact... I am."

i think the main issue with postal 3 (apart from the jank and uninteresting gameplay and plot) is just... they made dude too cool. they made him a duke nukem-esque cheesy action hero, instead of a pathetic little trailer creature whose life is so mind-numbingly ordinary that even the violence of the game feels like nothing. like, he's not a hero in any capacity, not even an anti-hero. he's just some fuckin guy messing around

Kirito: "...Oh right, Oniwaka-san. What should someone without any [fated connection] do?
Oniwaka: "...What?"
Kirito: "I know, I... can't make fated connections with anyone. Because this is the [Role] I was born with."
Kirito: "Tossed out like garbage the moment I was born. Without anyone caring about whether I lived or died, to ultimately die all alone."
Kirito: "For someone with this kind of garbage [Role]––really, what should they do?"
So the Chinese translation of that scene in Chapter 8 (emphasis mine).................
It's really interesting how differently he comes across here, compared to the English version. Here, he's a lot more resigned, honestly seems more hurt about it all. In the English version, his upset/resentment comes out a lot more spiteful. (May be of interest that for these particular lines, the Chinese translation seems closer to the original Japanese. I didn't check for the other ones though.)
He's also a lot more playful with Oniwaka in the Chinese version. There's this phrase he uses (讨厌啦) when Oniwaka asks him who he's working with (and Chinese Oniwaka doesn't say "bullcrap," he simply asks who told Kirito about all that) that's like... bordering on flirty, even though it's usually used in a joking manner. And his reply borders on self-deprecating lightheartedness: "C'mon, I don't have the ability/standing to work with people, you know my Role, I'm just being used. Of course, I'll just have to make use of them too."
The later lines are interesting too. There's the implication that MC themself will be the one severing their connections to those at their side. And Kirito doesn't really refer to MC as garbage: he equates their status (once they've lost all their connections) to garbage, but that's it. He doesn't call them scum either. His taunt ("How's it feel now, huh?") remains just as smug, but the vibe is more like someone gleefully interviewing an idiot on live TV while still maintaining an air of detachment/professional curiosity.
It's all very interesting to me. I would love to know how Kirito comes across in the original Japanese.

AI has literally been part of fandom for longer than some of the people currently whining about it.
Like, I wrote an AI assisted fanfic using Cleverbot all the way back in 2014. That's almost a decade ago.
I remember Botnik releasing its mainly AI written fanfic back in 2018 to generally very positive reviews.
AI dungeon has been around and on Ao3 since 2019.
Like, AI assisted or generated fanfics have been around for a while now. So can everyone please stop acting like they're this new and threatening thing? Like, they're really not.
Now that chatbots and the likes can form coherent paragraphs somewhat consistently there's bound to be more fics using them, which might be a bit annoying with regards to spam, but that's about as bad as it gets. And fandom has been growing and getting more, like, mainstream I guess, in general recently, so it's not like AI is the only thing to worry about there. Humans posting their own spam or non-fics seems to have gotten more common too. That's just the price of growth I guess, but it's not like that's an issue unique to AI stuff.
So can we all please freaking chill about AI fics already?

We all know that there's a lot of The Crane Wives music that can go along with des(s)ert duo's whole dynamic, especially in Double life.
For the Soul Unbounded take of the des(s)ert duo ending two: electric Boogaloo, I chose Unraveling by The Crane Wives and made a comic (loosely?) based on it/a small snidbit of my interpretation of the ending :)
Here's the snidbit, my interpretation of Grian has an off the shoulder sweater because wings :)

And here's the comic, click/tap on it for a better experience(sorry if you still can't read it...)

AO3 Etiquette -UPDATED
Based on both decent and not so decent replies, I have made some changes to my original post below.
It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:
As well as likes, kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished it, you liked it - so kudos.
If you really liked it, you should try to comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.
No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it (so use your notes to say if you want some constructive feedback). Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. No, posting it online is not an open invitation for that. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity and just want to share. Don't ruin that for them. I've seen so many authors just stop writing coz they can't handle the negative emotions the critism brings, and it's only meant to be a fun thing shared for free (pointing out tagging errors is not included in this).
Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.
There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.
For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.
The tag exception is if you don't want to tag a million things or spoil your story, you can rate it as "chose not to use warnings," and maybe tag the bare minimum.
Don't censor tags. How can someone exclude a tag if the word isn't typed out correctly? There are no content bans for terms so don't censor them.
If the tags are mostly content/trigger warnings, especially if they are things considered very fucked up or graphic, you might want to use "dead dove - do not eat" to ensure people know that you're not messing around with tags and what they get is exactly what you've warned them about.
Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLATONIC, like friendship or family.
Nothing is banned. This is an rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.
People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.
Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite or an exchange youve written for going public). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.
Instead of deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - consider making it anonymous or orphaning it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to your name anymore. If you still want to delete it, fair enough.
It's come to my attention that metaworks ARE allowed on AO3, which is something I wasn't aware of. So if you do post an essay or theory, please tag it as such so others can choose to search for it or exclude it. Art is also allowed.
The only reason this archive works is because NON ONE PROFITS. Do not link to your ko-fi or patreon or mention monetary gain in any way or you violate the terms and risk having your account removed. If anyone does link, it leaves the archive open to people claiming it's for profit and having the whole thing removed.
I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.
I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.

Sexism in TOS: Worst Offender, or Progressive in Retrospect in Comparison?
I see a lot of folks claim that TOS was the most sexist of the Star Trek shows by a landslide -- and while I agree that it definitely suffered from the sexism of the times, I also have other perspectives to share to give some food for thought.
I am of course not insinuating that TOS isn't sexist -- it is, but I have to ask folks to consider the breadth and depth of Berman's sexism in his run and ask yourself: Was Gene Roddenberry genuinely more sexist in his storytelling and delivery than Rick Berman?
I'm not telling you to feel one way or the other, but all I ask is that you hear me out and consider some perspectives and make your own balanced assessments. Nobody is obligated to share my opinion, but it means a lot just to have folks hear it and see their thoughts on the subject. So here is what I was originally responding to:
Tumblr media
Someone's response to this photo:
"Devil's advocate. This was a part of the popular form of cardio during the production time of TNG. Yes, it was heavily sexualised by men, but so is literally every other way women work out. Men have been caught taking pictures of women while trying to do dead lifts, running on tracks and working on sled machines. They post them online to share too. The fact is, there is no way a woman can be shown working out without it going there. And yeah,t hat includes the combat forms of workout they do in Star Trek. Just look at how Dax dresses when she spars with Worf. Yes, they're dating, but still, same goes when 7 does and any other female.
Aerobics routines like this were made dirty and cringy. This was what women wore then by and large. This is how the workout was done. We make it cringy."
My response to them:
"I respect your take, but I disagree on a few fronts.
The miniskirt was chosen by the TOS female cast, not the male cast, specifically requested by Grace LW and affirmed by Nichelle and Majel who would go on to vehemently defend the miniskirt over the years as comfortable and embraced by them.
Grace said it was comfortable and seen as a symbol of female sexual empowerment during the 60s and thought it would be a progressive garment (and turns out that it was, as it was later adapted and worn by male crew as a skant on TNG) -- FYI those were designed by a gay man and Gene approved them.
Tumblr media
This was also supposed to be Spock's TMP outfit:
Tumblr media
Literally lingerie.
We saw both Uhura (who saves Kirk in from Marlena Mirror Mirror) and Yeoman Landon (the first to initiate combat with a classic Kirk-esque kick to help the Captain being attacked in The Apple) carry out their combat training in their Starfleet uniforms without ever being made to change into any ridiculous workout gear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, I'd argue Jim Kirk was sexualized even more than the ladies of the week on the show and I saw his naked body more than anyone else's on a fairly regular basis. He wore red yoga tights while topless in Charlie X while the women wore full length gymnastic suits that covered their entire body. If anything, it went out of its way to avoid sexualizing women practicing fitness in those scenes and instead focused on Kirk.
Gene confessed that he asked to have Shatner filmed in suggestive/provocative ways to "give something to the ladies", so he -- as he said -- liked to "film him walking away" or have him conveniently busting out of his shirts in just about every episode as it were, because Shatner apparently had great assets. LOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gene made an effort to at least sexualize both if he was going to sexualize one, and he carried that attitude forward in wanting the m/m and f/f scenes in the background on Risa for TNG. He also insisted that the men and women wear skimpy outfits on THAT TNG planet. You know the one. LOL I mean the dudes even had on less than the women:
Tumblr media
Gene also gave permission to K/S shippers to have their conventions back in the 70s when he was asked for permission. Gene and Nimoy felt with all the skimpy outfits they had the ladies wear, why not let the ladies and gay men have their fun, too? It's how we ended up with moments like this:
Tumblr media
Yes, those are two people dressed up as Kirk and Spock's penises doing interpretive dance. Gene didn't give two damns. LOL
In my eyes, that was a very progressive take on Gene's part for the 60s. It was actually PARAMOUNT STUDIOS who had the big problem with K/S stories and vehemently tried to shut them down. Gene literally hired slash authors on his payroll and even had several slash stories/writers published in his official Star Trek books (The New Voyages & The New Voyages II).
I feel I saw Uhura and women in TOS engaged in more physical combat/altercations defending themselves that Troi or Bev were shown holding their own.
In fact, Kirk used to get furious when someone would "dress up" his female crew members without their consent (Trelane episode, Shore Leave episode) because like his male crew members, he wanted them to be treated professionally and to also have his male crew act professionally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Berman brought some of his own personal biases into Star Trek that in some ways regressed it. While TOS had blatant sexism and was called on it time and again, that show was made in the 60s -- a solid 21 years before TNG. We as a modern audience understood why some of it was cringe/sexist due to the time period -- look at any other media coming out in the 60s and Star Trek was miles ahead of what other shows were doing.
Compare that to Berman who was churning sexist stuff out when women like Starbuck and Scully were simultaneously on screen on other programs airing, and we had already had Sigourney Weaver and other strong women in Holywood playing respectful roles.
In my eyes, there was no need of the sexism seen in TNG but especially VOY and ENT. There was no excuse for it when other shows were writing women far better and a number of those weren't even set in the future like Trek was, making it age even faster due to having those dated perspectives frequently highlighted.
In the Center Seat documentary as well as "The Fifty Year Mission" book you will find cast members, writers and other studio alumni who attest to this. Some discussions from "The Fifty Year Mission":
"First, Berman was supposed to have been a real sleaze ball . . . According to Terry Farrel, he would go on constantly about how her breasts weren't big enough, how she should do something about it, and how his secretary was a good example to follow as she had huge breasts. She even had to have fittings to get larger bras, and that was all done at his behest.
Later Berman and Braga developed a name for Jeri Ryan's character prior Seven of Nine. They originally called the character "perineum" which if you look it up it is the area between the anus and the scrotum. Later they floated the name "6 of 9". I mean, what does it tell you about where these two were coming from in the development of this character if they had names like that put forward in all seriousness for her?"
Gene Roddenberry also had some of his own more progressive ideas for TNG cut or watered down by Berman. Roddenberry agreed TNG should have homosexual relationships and representation at a con in the 80s and insisted on it in a meeting with his writers -- something Berman later would not honor. Gene wanted the AIDS episode, showing m/m and f/f in the Riza scenes -- these were some of Roddenberry's requests to include in TNG that Berman later stonewalled.
Berman's era was sadly dated by his own misogynist bias, IMO, to the point that it can somewhat hurt the shows he worked on through his cringe egoism and blatant disrespect toward his female cast.
There is a reason why Gene could keep female actresses working with him and Berman had a revolving door of women that he couldn't seem to keep working for him -- he was abhorrent to women, on and off set. Gene wasn't perfect at all, he had a lot of issues himself -- but Berman was a whole other level. Just look at what he did to poor Jolene Blalock, Marina Sirtis and his toxic commenting on her body weight which exacerbated her struggles with eating disorders, or how he treated and talked to Terry Farrell.
Anyway, just some food for thought. I'm not saying anyone is wrong regarding a take like that, but there are a variety of ways to look at this. Gene Roddenberry isn't a saint by any means, but it definitely bothers me how folks will tote the Berman era as if it were the lesser of two evils or the more progressive depiction of women when I felt there were far more concerning portrayals of women in his era with far less justification.
(P.S: I don't event want to go near the sheer amount of "creepy old dude/villain preys on innocent/naïve/scared young woman or little girl" stories there were in Berman's era, either. But that's a whole other can of worms I can write about in a part 2.)
