what's been bugging me is how some people, especially steddyhands shippers, seem to ignore Stede's complete blind spot that is Ed. I've been rereading some post s1 fix-its, and it's amazing how almost every one of their reunions had Stede blaming Ed for marooning the crew and attempting to kill Lucius (same with ppl's expectation that there would be some sort of physical fight). And then he just. Doesn't.

Stede obviously cares for the crew. A lot. But the moment Ed's well being is in the picture, he becomes hyperfocused on Ed and Ed only. Obviously the crew told him about being marooned, but we don't see him mention that once in his letters. They reunite with Lucius, and yet all Stede talks about is Ed (and his poor portrayal on his wanted posters)- Lucius confesses about Ed throwing him overboard, and all Stede does is question 'why?', because he knows Ed wouldn't just randomly attempt to murder Lucius. The moment Lucius tells him Stede broke Ed, Stede is back to blaming himself, never Ed. He clearly cares about Lucius, because later in the ep, he tries to reconcile with him by giving him 'dating advice' and trying to save him from what happened to him and Ed, but Ed comes first.

We actually see it in s1 too, if only briefly, in s7 when Stede desperately tries to keep Ed abroad and becomes oblivious to the crew's concerns and problems and we get the iconic line "Eat and apple, for God's sake!" Stede cares, but Ed is at the front of his mind and it's hard for him to understand what could be more important.

In s02e03, he gets his ship and the rest of his crew back, but Ed is nowhere. Izzy is literally missing a leg and Stede just tells him to piss off.

And I've seen people questioning why Stede never questioned that, why he never bothered to ask about Izzy's missing toe or back scars or why he didn't care about the leg more. Izzy clearly lies again and tells Stede Ed shot it off because he told Ed he loves him, and yet stede just. Doesn't care.

And i mean, that question is valid. Because people see Stede as someone who's much more caring, more hero-coded. But Stede is far more a romantic hero to Ed than he is your general hero to the rest of the characters. Stede is selfish. Stede is blind-sided. Stede is willing to abandon his morals when it comes to Ed.

I think there are two reasons Stede doesn't question Izzy's Ed-inflicted-injuries, or any other, for that matter. First one is, Stede's blind spot for Ed. Yeah, Izzy got his leg shot off by Ed (not entirely true, but I digress), but there must have been a reason why. Yeah, Izzy got his toes cut off and hand-fed, but Ed had a reason. Stede knows Ed is not violent by default, so he knows something must have prompted him to do that. Is it completely justified? That's a differenr convo about people trying to portray Izzy as a victim rather than someone who kept pushing Ed over the edge until they were both too far.

The second is... Yeah, Stede just doesn't care. Especially about Izzy. Lie it's been pointed out, Stede just thinks izzy is a dick. He misnames him. He's rightuflly mad at him for selling them out to the english. He literally dreams about killing Izzy for that. Stede blames himself for abandoning Ed and everything that happened after (and yes, Ed's actions are Ed's actions, but that's how Stede sees it), but he clearly also blames Izzy for setting them up.

So, Stede sees Izzy's missing leg? Probably deserved that. Back scars, missing toe? Eh, probably deserved that, too, Ed would look absolutely lovely in a braid. Is that morally correct? No, but Stede isn't written to be a moral character. That's what makes him so real, and that's why so many other actors than Rhys would struggle making Stede sympathetic and likeable to the audiences.

That's not to say Stede doesn't see Ed's wrongs. He absolutely does. He just. Doesn't care that much in the end, because his love for all of Ed is that bright, to the point of being absolutely, utterly selfish. DJenkins said it from the beginning; this show is about Ed and Stede's relationship. Stede doesn't question Izzy's injuries bc in the end, it just doesn't matter to him when Ed is in the picture

OFMD Critique: the Handling of Female Characters, "Girlbosses," and Dropped Polyamory in Season 2 (aka Why the HELL did you give Zheng Yi Sao that ending?)

For this one, I kind of just want to gesture at the ending of 2x7 and the entirety of 2x8 and scream at the top of my lungs, "What the FUCK was that SHIT?"

But I already did that when the finale itself came out, so instead I'm going to stay calm and give a genuine critique (though still as rambly as always).

The handling of this show's women is...questionable. I think the only woman that was handled 100% well is Mary in Season 1. No real notes there. I love her and how her storyline is written to bits.

But in season 2, all 3 major women characters (Archie, Zheng Yi Sao, and Spanish Jackie) have their storylines hamstrung by romantic plot lines.

In Archie's case, the romance plot works. Not every character needs to have a subplot. The bits that flesh out her character are well integrated into the story, whether that be her first kiss with Jim directly leading into the fighting to the death plotline/Jim finally standing up to Blackbeard or the lines "you have hope, it's cute," "this is just kinda how things work," and "they just kind of get away with it, you know" (though it still pisses me off that that last one goes unchallenged in the narrative) being used for plot progression, or are fun character details, such as all of the snake cult hints. (Do I wish that the poly aspect of her, Jim, and Olu's dynamic was better executed so that I didn't feel like the tealoranges plot was yanked out from under my feet? Yes. Of course.)

But as for Zheng Yi Sao?

The treatment of this character makes my blood boil.

See, I'm not opposed to her having a romantic plotline. In fact, I think it could have been fun. A woman can have romance and power. 2x7 even looked like it was building to that sort of conclusion, with Jim, Olu, and Archie joining her crew in one of the very few actual canon implications of poly (though no confirmation, sadly- have y'all seen the info about the deleted scenes that could have confirmed it? I can't believe so much ended up on the cutting room floor.) But then the end of 2x7 strips all power from Zheng Yi Sao.

The show pulled one of the most powerful pirates and most accomplished women in history (also a woman of color, btw, a fact which only doubles the weird fucking undertones of her treatment as a character) into the show only to strip her of her power, shove her into a romantic plot line on a ship where she isn't even a captain, and expected me not to pick up on ANY of the fucked up optics of the writing? The fact that we end the season with Zheng and Spanish Jackie both losing their power as pirate queens in exchange for setting them on a ship with only one singular boyfriend grinds my fucking gears, man.

There are ways to give Zheng a romantic plotline without it making her an idiot (ala what happens with Olu in 2x3) or making her lose all of her power (ala the finale). Jackie's case is less infuriating, but it does remind me of the fact that a lot of the casual poly/open relationship rep from the first season got stripped from the second season (and before you come at me with the Zheng/Olu/Archie/Jim storyline, look me in the eye and cite to me any concrete canon evidence we have of it. I ADORE the fanfic as much as the next person, but I mourn the lost potential every day. Check my previous tealoranges meta for that- I might write a long version of it sometime). Lucius and Pete lost all their open relationship implications and Jackie's husbands are dropped from the finale in favor of her running off with the only one who gets a name.

I understand that they probably wrote Zheng Yi Sao this way to show Stede's growth as a Captain by showing that he brings more flexible ideas to the table (which, by the way, is completely undermined by the fact that his plan actively kills Izzy in the process), but they really should have thought through the...everything in regards to the implications of writing Zheng Yi Sao this way. Because if you bring in one of the only female characters with speaking lines onto this show, a Chinese woman at that, make romance actively make her stupid, have her be fooled by a white man (who, by the way, kills THOUSANDS of unnamed women off-page in explosions and it's just kind of treated as a plot point for the whole Zheng/Auntie/Stede/Izzy/Ed comparison which gives me the ick), strip her of her fleet and her power, and then have the GALL to not even make her the Captain of the Revenge at the end of it all? I'm not sure I trust you to handle her legacy, much less write women in general.

TLDR; Writing a very queer show does not resolve you of sexism.

My s2 au rambling

It's 2am and I should be working on my paper soooo

Listen. So we leave the break up boat angst as it is. I can't deprive my babygirl of his suicide attempt (it's my depression bias, ok?). BUT. No traumatizing Lucius. It was unnecessary, they didn't commit to it anyway, they just tormented our boy for nothing, so no, no trauma for Lucius. He got somehow rescued shortly after being thrown over board or something. He isn't traumatized, but he's seriously pissed at Ed. (he's not with Zheng in this au atm or Stede uses different ship to get to the Revenge idk)

The rest of e1-3 can stay the same I guess... Ed gets resurrected by the power of love and hope, but then remembers Stede hurt him and tells him to fuck off. Now, what if Ed went ashore with only Buttons? Like, I get people being unsatisfied that they turned him into a seagull, and so we didn't have him anymore, but I find his scene with Ed in the forest really touching.

So Ed meets Anne and Mary and he can realize he doesn't want a relationship like theirs, how forcing yourself to be something else for your partner would just end up in both of you hating each other. Ed calls Mary out, Anne burns it all down, Buttons is there. Buttons transforms into a seagull, proving to Ed that change is possible, you just have to believe. But now he's alone in the forest, so he goes back to Anne and Mary and they go, somehow, to the Republic of Pirates, Mary and Anne to get back to piracy and Ed decides to visit Jackie (since we know they're friends).

[DRAFT: what about them finding Zheng on their way? Like on a sea, somehow. Let's say they were traveling in a dinghy and were let on board. I want Lucius to be somehow there and he and Ed being awkward, Ed trying to avoid him, because he doesn't know how to deal with this kind of situation and Lucius being pissed. Ed also could help as a navigator with his cloud knowledge, he could be their Buttons! Ed could help with towels and actually like it, but Lucius would be suspicious, because last time he saw Ed acting like that he almost died. Ed just tries to chill, tries to figure his shit up, but is haunted by his guilt and self hatred, he tries to not think about it. Lucius starts to notice him hiding his negative feelings, acting as if everything is fine and peachy, "look I'm folding stuff". He doesn't care about Ed, doesn't want to, but as time goes by, his empathy starts to make him not being able to just ignore Ed's suffering. They were friends, kinda, before. He knows how emotional Ed actually is. Jim also almost killed Lucius, but they were fine after that, so maybe he could cut some slack... He begrudgingly tries to talk to Ed, but he obviously says everything is fine. Ed actually avoids any kindness, feeling like a monster after everything he did, which only makes him more miserable. He tortured Izzy, he traumatized his crew... Stede came back, but should he? Maybe it would be better if he never came back, if they left him to die there...

Idk how to go there, but I want Lucius to help Ed deal with his emotions, knowing that Lucius is the emotionally intelligent one, and was helping him like this in the past. He wouldn't be so nice to him as before, still keeping a grudge, but he's too empathetic to just ignore him. Lucius gets to know how twisted Ed's coping mechanisms are and how lost he is, they get to know each other better (Lucius always knowing who he is vs Ed just starting to discover that).

MEANWHILE Stede and Izzy could have the same adventures as e4-5 (I guess idk what to make Stede do in this version of e4, but idc rn). Stede and Izzy could bond and have more interactions with the crew. I'd also love to see more of whatever that gaze Izzy gave Stede in "Bonnet, we need to go" scene. Izzy realizing his life could be different, better (just like Ed in s1e4), Stede getting attached to Izzy. I also want there to be addressed how Izzy tries to ignore Ed, ignore his existence. How he never talks about him. I'd love for them to have a talk similar to that one in e3 ("Allright Bonnet, have it your way"), where it comes out that they both feel responsible for what happened with Ed, like, how Stede feels responsible for Everything that happened, and Izzy'd be like "oh fuck off" and try to persuade him, it's him who's guilty, somehow comforting each other that way.

Oh! And Stede's crew could be trying to find Lucius. They'd have their adventures, but while searching for Lucius. And also Oluwande could help the break up crew with their trauma, since he's the most emotionally intelligent in this group.

So yeah, Ed and Lucius could become friends and Lucius could help Ed with the whole self identity thing and Stede and Izzy also could become friends (they could go into pining direction, but I wouldn't make them boyfriends at this point, it's too soon), Stede and the crew could help Izzy becoming his own person and developing some self worth as a human being, and Izzy could help Stede realize he doesn't have to be something he isn't just to please other people, because Izzy was the one to see Stede in his more cringe moments but also the surprisingly successful ones (he and Oluwande). Izzy knows what's under the mask Stede puts on around other people, that he isn't so nice or composed as he'd like people to see him, and so his acceptance of Stede would be so meaningful +Izzy's a cool pirate so also that.

Dunno what next, but for calypso's birthday and Ned Low's attack I'd like Ed and Lucius to be with the crew, because I want Ed's angst and I liked the idea with this being Lupete wedding. And it'd be bad to make a party before finding Lucius.]

Rewatching all of the episodes released to do last minute, 11th hour thoughts

Season 2 episode 1

Just realized Rickey calls himself an “odd bird” which is fitting with the episode title

Also realized that Rickey says “I know everything about you” but instead melting Stede like whenever Ed said, it just pisses him off

Still can’t get over the way Ed says “and these are the kids” and “hi all”

“Vibe on this ship is poisonous” ——-> “turn poison to positivity”

Still crazy he was at sea for 88 days…the idea that the tally marks were for Stede is sad but that it’s also for the record makes it sadder

I wonder if the indigo will ever come back into play

Also it’s interesting that Ed never did anything about Fang crying

Episode 2

Seeing cleaned up and chipper Ed hurts with the context that he wants to die…also every moment with Ed when he’s interacting with Frenchie is just….ooof yeah he looks gorgeous but damn those eyes are dead…like when he says “was someone injured” and “panto”

Idk what to think about Stede’s lack of expression when Lucius says everything that happened was his fault…I mean he does let out a hell of a sigh at the end of the scene

I like Archie’s earring

Does ed feel any guilt at the moment when Jim says “he was your friend “ or was it still just pure anger

Also, Zhang saying “you’re doing great” totally has the “doing great sweetie ❤️❤️” vibes

EPISODE 3

Stede face when he starts to climb over the rail breaks my heart every time

anyone else notice how gentle ed is with his hands? Like when he places them on the table as Jeff during the gravy basket, when he places them on his lap when visiting sick Izzy, when he crosses them in s1e6 when Stede tells him they should do a fuckery

The heartbreak coming on to Stede face when he sees Ed hurts

Wonder if ghost Hornigold is a foreshadowing for living Hornigold coming

Also love the Zheng tries to seduce Olu with a sword

Aww Jim grabbed Archie’s hand when they were escaping the cell

I’m never going to stop yelling about how ed grabs Stede hand at the end of this episode

Also is This Woman’s Work season 2’s The Chain? Either way I tear up

EPISODE 4

I think Ed’s first expression when he wakes up is confusion, of course. But also maybe a little omg you’re here…for a minute, lol. Then he gets pissed. Anyone more eloquent then me have any ideas?

I so wish the cast could talk about this show so we could ask them who voted to kick ed off ship and to keep him

Love that Lucius points out that ed never actually said I’m sorry to them, he’s right and I hope he gives them proper apology later

So Ed’s emotion and breaking of his voice but also the YouTuber quality of it….anyone have any thoughts?

Ed’s apology and the whole “restore my reputation” hits different with Taikas fuck up, doesn’t it?

Still going crazy over Ed’s face when Stede says it’s a long story. Is he sad? That stede feels like he should stop talking? Or what…

I love ed setting boundaries, well done and Stede’s instant acceptance

Gosh but I do love Bronson Pinchot. I first saw him as Mr. Toomy and I love that he brought that energy here

Watched OFMD, I have thoughts and feelings, and here be my outlet, whoopee. Spoilers, livewatching ramblings and screenshots ahead

Oh yeah Izzy focus, because I am me :)

Ep 6:

I've wanted Ed and Izzy to talk again for episodes but -

Bro, he confessed his love to you and you shot him down like a dog. Then knowing he loves you, you wanted him to end your life, which he refused. He tried to end his life instead, stripped of all meaning in life. You do not fucking get to be snappy with him, you were supposed to be the first one to talk,. Yes I am bitter, shut up- Kudos for Izzy being the bigger man (heh).

Everybody is just adressing Stede as their captain. Frenchie's eyes nervously flick to Ed from time to time though. Ed just heaves in annoyance. This guy really just hates his life atm. He's the most disconnected from the crew, like they tolerate him but his only social contact is Stede basically. And somewhat Izzy. Speaking of, it feels like a role reversal to season 1 where Izzy was the one kind of isolated on board

You stole the thunder you little drama queen. But man he can SING T_T it's so soft..... and a love song....

This season has a really mixed vibe inbetween funny and dark. Like, this ep is very artsy but they're also being tortured, i almost felt like I was watching a bit of Hannibal

If you think I am going to make this about Izzy, you are absolutely right!!! (I guess Ned and Maggie are Captain and first mate too, so I am definitely drawing the parallels) Because I think most of the issues between Ed and Izzy stem from Ed seeing him only as his First Mate and not Izzy, to the point where Izzy wasn't a person anymore. And now that Ed doesn't want to be a pirate anymore, the First Mate following around is a thorn in his side, and he fails to see the loyal friend underneath the front of the First Mate

Ned not caring about whether Maggie dies, because she deserves death if she can't do her job (tie a proper tie). Yeah I am thinking about Ed shooting down Izzy and replacing him immediately. "You're mercenaries, you don't have feelings." Yeah, hm.

Stede is an absolute handsome charmer in this season, I gotta say.

Ned: "You used to be a killer" Hm not so sure about that. Not the way everyone thinks at least. I am actually not sure if Edward ever killed anyone after his dad and the one person during the raid. His flashbacks were of these two murders at least (and the almost murder of izzy) so I am guessing there weren't anymore off screen murders?

Ed giving absolute zero shits about Ned's taunting, but Stede steps in, my man is manning up.

I find the difference between Ed and Stede so fascinating. Ed, who feels like his whole life went downhill after he killed and who wants to run from his life as a pirate, versus Stede who has been taunted for being weak, who wants to prove his strength and become a proper pirate. They are progressing in opposite ways.

"See, that's why he likes you. Because of your bumbling amateur status" I wonder if Ed feels like he corrupted Stede, sort of like Stede was afraid he ruined Edward at the end of season 1.

Izzy the killer being like "Give him a minute. First kill is always a mindfuck." and Edward going to check on Stede anyway, makes me wonder when Izzy first killed. If it was for Edward or if it was on his own. And if it was for Edward, if he checked on him, because I think probably not. And judging by the way Izzy stares into nothingness as Ed goes to check on Stede... yeah, no.

EMOTIONALLY LOADED KISS AGAINST THE WALL!!!!!!!!!! hell llloo

Can't help but feel sad tho with Izzy continuing his love serenade as Stede and Ed make out. Singing about how "It's only him for me, and me for him for life. He told me, he swore to me, for life." while the guy you're in love with is hooking up with another. I swear if the ring he wears around his tie was a promise form Ed I'm gonna be so devastated, I really really hope it isnt. :')

And now about the crew finding out about Stede's pregnancy, just how EXACTLY do they find out? And what the fuck does Izzy do about the situation?

If male pregnancy isn't normal in this universe then I'd imagine him being confused and pissed that Edward and Stede are getting a kid, I also remember something about him liking kids on one of my asks that you answered?

Oh and I KNOW Lucius is also the reason the two got together, so how would Lucius react to finding out? And also how would everyone react if Stede and Ed allow the crew to be the baby's uncles?

I bet some of them would have some kind of weird reaction like Buttons and others are absolutely happy that they get to be uncles 💖💖

He is! We all love Ed, lol.

I really have to think about it. I honestly like the idea of them knowing before Stede or Ed do. I’m imagining a scenario kind of like that of the first episode, in which the group is planning to mutiny. But instead, it’s then discussing what the hell is up with one of their captains. He’s lacking around, vomiting, placing, mentioning pains, getting snippy, just acting weird (“Or weirder than usual,” as Jim supplies). Frenchie proposes that he’s been cursed, while Oluwande suggests that the captain just picked up some bug on land.

“Aye, it is a bug. But not some little critter insect one can squash under your foot. Though I suppose you could, if you feared no retribution.” Button ends up interrupting and informs the crew, quite simply, that he can sense the reality of a pregnancy. Everyone is shocked but, once they think about it, they suppose it makes sense.

As for Izzy, I don’t think he would be present for this. But he finds out about it later, still before Ed and Stede. He’s watching as the crew starts behaving differently to Stede, fretting about how he’s feeling, that he be careful how he walks. Hell, the Swede would probably one offer to chew Stede’s for him (“What if those bites are too big and choke the little one!?”). He finally orders them privately to give him answers before someone finally spills the beans. He is thrown for a loop, horrified that there would not be concrete proof that Blackboard and Stede fucking Bonnet had sex, and yet another thing pulling his captain away from piracy. However, as I did mention, Izzy is very soft when it comes to children, so he does come around with time.

I think Lucius would find out when the crew does, but he outright gags at the thought. I suspect that Lucius isn’t a fan of babies and is just thinking about how much more work he’ll have to do, scribbling down everything the little thing gets up to. Plus now he’s fending off Black Pete’s suggestions that they try to have a baby, which he will not allow in the slightest. Still, he remains quite supportive of Stede and is happy that he’s so excited when he finds out.

Our Flag Means Death Finale

Spoilery edition. I.e. Where I try to be somewhat coherent. Despite the fact I'm fucking vibrating and both incredibly pissed and also so pleased and also fucking scared and just...ANGRYHAPPYFULL.

Okay. So. We got it. We won. We got the kiss. It was everything we were hoping for, but it happened in the second to last episode so you knew they were gonna fuck it up but we HOPED they'd end happily but NO because fuck everything they needed to give us a cliffhanger.

So I HATE losing the beard, first of all. I guess it's like, metaphorical, but I don't even like people with facial hair and I am a SIMP for Blackbeard. Like without the beard he looks like Taika Waititi, which is fine, nothing wrong with that, but he's too familiar honestly. With the beard he's Ed. Yanno?

And okay, it made total sense that Stede freaked out after the kiss (not really BECAUSE of the kiss) but because his family thinks he's dead and he thinks...he ruined blackbeard. I think that's really what it came down to. He thought he owed his children and MAry and that Ed and his crew would be better off without him.

And he's 100% wrong about that.

Still sad about Doug and the fact that Mary didn't start a lesbian harem while he was gone. But everything else about MAry is literal perfection. She is fucking top class, ultimate, I want her and I want to be her. Literally perhaps because I realized if I just got a vest I can cosplay her. Okay and a wig. I have a month before HAvencon, can I make a vest by then? Normally yes but my back is FUCKED RN.

Anyway. So much to be said about Sad Breakup Ed the Emo Rockstar. Well, okay that much. WEARING STEDE'S ROBE.

Seriously, though, Ed it's not like you confirmed nothing happened to Stede. You didn't go check on him or make sure he wasn't dead or captured.

But anyway, the conversation with MAry when Stede finally realizes, or finally admits he's in love. And says it's a HE. OMG all the gay fairies got their wings. It was pandamonium in the group chat.

Okay, all I'm going to say about Izzy Hands is that he so badly needs a Dom. He's way too into Ed choking him, and even Ed feeding him his fucking toe.

Like, honestly, as much as I was screaming no, I'm also really glad we got Dark!Ed angst because that's really what I've been wanting from this ship and didn't think the show was going to give me because it's all Rom Com. So, PROVIDED that Lucius is really okay, I'm fine with it because it's so meaty to explore.

Speaking of Lucius, NO HE CAN'T BE DEAD I DON'T ACCEPT IT NO. Like this show wouldn't do that, right? The most queer of queers? They wouldn't bury him, right? Surely he's actually alive. Like Fang actually saved him or something.

And the fucking FLAG and the hearts the silk from his mother was a red herring actually the hearts are made of Stede's clothes.

Finally, THANK GOD they gave us the gift of showing us Ed crying after all that because otherwise there would be so much speculation and we'd have to wonder an argue about whether he has actually lost himself again. But no, baby's just broken and trying to shut off the hurt with violence and returning to his former persona.

The fact that he looks like the worst mall goth ever with that face paint isn't helping though. Again, it's symbolic, yeah. But really, ed? Fucking drama queen.

Seriously, though how was that last episode SO FUCKING FUNNY and SO FUCKING TOUCHING and also SO FUCKING FULL OF PAIN. Like, if the show was capable of going THAT HARD the whole season they need to stop holding back.

Also once again, if we don't get season 2 someone has to die.
