I actually think that China views his beauty as more of a curse than blessing? Because of all the unwanted attention it gets him and the entitlement that some countries act like they have to his body, time, and labor, to the point where even if he refuses to do something on reasonable grounds they would act like he's being a total bitch.
That's interesting honestly I haven't thought about it like that before! I can only rlly see it for the early modern to modern era tho, wrt gender dynamics and China's own place in the world. Back when he was so powerful he was seen as divine, beauty among scholarly men was celebrated and admired, I've always thought he would be pretty comfortable in his beauty - beautiful scholarly men in China itself would be respected and among fellow countries, he's still one of the most powerful, even faraway traders who fall in love can only try to make him smile before getting dismissed if they get annoying. If anything I wonder if he'd be more irritated by how courtly officials might treat him, other countries are ants to him, 天朝, but courtly officials who are overly infatuated w him and act like perverts and are constantly around him would be annoying 🤧
Of course, there are eras where he's not the most powerful and at that point, it'd definitely be a curse, he gets conquered every once in a while by groups specifically dedicated to conquering him after all. I imagine the Qing dynasty was one of those cursed times jfkldghf
I do think it makes sense in modern day, he's clearly pushed around by the rest of the allies in canon (side note: why is does tvtropes do a better job on China and allies relations than the wiki omg he gets so bullied and harassed and treated like a maid by them and it's literally never brought up on the wiki) and expanding that, imo many western countries these days are also uncomfortably entitled to him, even as he grows more stable. On an individual basis as well, in modern-day his pretty face probably gets him a lot more bad attention than in the past 😶

You know that post about the characters' kinks (idk if you rbed it or someone else)?
I think it's mostly right about a-yao. he def would have a power kink (i was origanally sold on this by a topping from the bottom chengyao fic), but i could also imagine him enjoying some pampering in sex. the phrase 'princess treatment' comes to mind (although i think that phrase might be a spa thing).
and this complements the ships
like. imagine lxc servicing him. for once, lxc's isn't having to make choices where the options are Thing That Will Hurt People A and Thing That Will Hurt People B. JGY is getting some well deserved time not thinking about which role he has to play in the social hierarchy. it's all just cozy hours that he and JGY have squirrelled away.
nmj gets to express all his Mother hen instincts while simultaneously getting laid! he can let go off all that Important Leader BS and be soft and tender with the person he wants to take care of.
also. i know people talk abt jiang cheng being a praise-kink having sub who cries during sex (very true and not at all shameful), but i'm sure some gentle service topping would make him very happy. he's making jgy happy! a feat rarely accomplished by man. he's doing a good job even if he's the one telling jgy *he's* doing a good job. jiang cheng loves projects and 'make a-yao feel special' is the best kind of project.
then there's wrh. the perfect man to tell jgy he's perfect and make him feel pampered and special. specifically because of jgy's daddy issues. if he's at a point where he actually trusts wrh, i'm sure jgy would love this.

I don't remember the post you mention (so it probably wasn't me who reblogged it lol), but I totally agree with you!
I'm sure that JGY would normally be one great power bottom, even a mean top XD, as he absolutely has a thing for control, and I firmly believe that it comes basically from his need to feel safe: the more in charge of a situation, the safer he is. And he would enjoy that!
But I also believe that if he was to trust his partner enough, he would let himself be taken care of. Or at least it would be something that would do him good, even if he would be hesitant about letting someone else do the work for a change and being shown that he can receive without having to earn it.
And yes, it works well in the context of ships.
LXC would certainly appreciate having the worst dilemma he has to face being where to start pampering JGY xD. He's a kind and gentle person, so doing his best to shower his A-Yao in affection would be like second nature. Making a loved one feel good, what a joy!
There are not a lot of chances for NMJ to show his tender side, and he is also one to appreciate hard work and reward it accordingly, not to mention he is very protective. There's the saber spirit too, so having something else to distract him from that, making him focus on little A-Yao fully would do him well too.
With JC I think it's a situation similar to JGY in some regard, not so much about control, but about feeling fully accepted and reassured, and being a top is another way to achieve that: procuring someone pleasure, making them feel safe with him, lower their guard and trust him, seeing the effect he has on someone and being encouraged. JC is also a protective person who is fiercely devoted to the few he holds dear, caring for JGY is a sense a very personal thing bc they share so much similar baggage. Also he just likes to know he is doing a good job.
Oh, WRH. As you can imagine, this one is my favorite in this scenario bc of how much it would mean coming from him XD. Just imagine you are a smol guy who everybody looks down on and who has to continuously prove himself... and THEN you have the most imposing, powerful man caring for you, servicing you, telling you how perfect you are, how good you are... it'd be easy for him to crash you, and YET here he is, pampering you, validating you, making you feel like the most special person bc how could you not be when you have This Man telling you about how he would burn down the world for you :').
I can see it all being very playful and sweet with NHS. He is known for being a lazy guy who would normally prefer himself getting pampered, but him doing it for JGY would feel like a fun experiment, and I imagine NHS of all ppl being one JGY would trust easily (if we don't include canon ending lol). Maybe not having a lot of faith in how would NHS perform a first, but being pleasantly surprised and it's all giggles and jokes. All part of his evil plan to get JGY to relax and stop worrying about work!
OMG XY. Tbh I can only see these two having some nasty, disrespectful sex XD, JGY trusting the delinquent enough to actually be intimate with him, but XY is too much of a wild card to be fully service top imo, much less a gentle selfless one that would pamper him. It would still be a good session of catharsis tho :P.

What do you think Jin Guangyao needs the most in a romantic partner?
Hi there! Sorry for the late reply ^^;
Honestly? Given canon, I think this little guy needs first and foremost to feel respected by his partner, the assurance that he is seen as an equal despite his background and baggage.
I'll also say that he'd need to trust them, and while trust is a staple of any relationship, in JGY's case, the fact that he is aware of the things he had to do throughout his life, feeling like he is not going to be accepted by his partner would already nulify the first requirement of respect.
Can't feel respected when he is convinced that his partner is going to think less of him, or even stop loving him if they were to know everything about him. So even subconsciously he is working on the assumption that he isn't an equal to his partner if he feels like he cannot share this part of him with them.
So the perfect romantic partner for him, in my opinion, would have to be a person that not only treats him like he isn't either inferior or superior, but that can also show enough open-mindness and... let's call it grayness of morality for him to feel like he is going to be understood if/when he opens up about the less flattering side of him.
Also validation. It's very important that he is told that he is, in fact, a good boy on a regular basis :')

Just wanted to say that I appreciate the hive-mind my little twt circle has when someone just randomly posts about a ship and we all go full seagulls "ship ship ship", commenting on the ship, retwting about the ship, sometimes even stuff from years ago.
It has happened twice already this week and it reminded me of why I do fandom at all ;u;

Other than nieyao, what are your favorite ships for JGY and NMJ?
Oh my dear anon, where should I even start!
This fandom has made me a multishipper since there are so many fascinating dynamics going on between the characters, and they are all so wonderfully and painfully interconnected. There are many ships I enjoy for these two, but I'll go with the favorites you asked for or we'll be here all day lol
I'm a huge 3zun lover, so for NMJ, my other favorite ship would be nielan.
Now, for JGY is a bit trickier since this little guy is my bicycle and I ship him hard with most of the cast or something XD. I'm very, VERY into xiyao as well... but I have to go with ruoyao here: it's spicier and risque, with room for a wide range of scenarios (also Meng "daddy issues" Yao much lol), and I'm just the kind of person to be biased towards the underdog in any situation and it's obvious which one is the much smaller ship here :')))))

What about Ningyao. WN didn't seem too disturbed by his time in Jinlintai so like, I like to think JGy took mercy on him. Maybe they were friends during sunshot. Maybe WN helped JGY out in Qishang. Maybe JGY apologised for what JGS did and had him do to WN. Maybe he was sad that WN wasn't fully cognizant with the nails, because that'one less friendly person to talk to :(
I must give it to you, your brain is bigger than mine bc I didn't really consider that one before. But that's mostly bc the way my allyao agenda works is that it would take significant interactions MY had with others that he has stablished dynamics with, and run with it (is it really my fault he's connected to so many ppl in this story??). Ningyao may be leaning on crackship territory, but let's see!
It's an interest approach, yeah. I think there's not a lot to be done during the time WN was being held by the Jin, we are never told what happened, but regardless, poor guy was rendered pretty much a mindless beast around that time...
But then again, I don't think timeline would have made it possible for them to interact much before the end of the war either.
Iirc MY went to join the Wen after the fall of Lotus Pier, and by then WQ and her fam had been appointed to the supervisory thingie something, meaning they probably didn't have much contact with Nightless City.
Still, we have little detail of how the war was actually going, especially after JC regained control of Yunmeng. So it could be possible that that made the Wens there retreat back to Qishan??
In any case, it'd be fascinating to see MY interact with perhaps the gentlest Wen. I'd imagine that that fact alone would be a breath of fresh air when you are appointed as chief torturer, especially as the war was approaching its peak and the end was near.
There's still the fact that JGY knew of the prisoners camp, where he must have known WN was. He had just been acknowledged by his father, so he probably considered not smart to risk getting thrown out so soon idk.
Regardless, always entertaining to have food for thought :D

you are not alone in finding something deeply compelling about ruoyao 👀 like at the end of the day i am ride-or-die for xiyao, but there is still just something so /CLENCHES FIST, deeply satisfying about seeing meng yao granted both dignity and respect at this point in his life... even if that sect leader *is* wen ruohan.
And I'm so happy to discover that!! Ahhh this has turned out to be the ruoyao day for me and I couldn't be happier TuT
Oh, I'm an allyao shipper at heart, there's just something about this little simpled guy, especially when it comes to xiyao. In fact! I replied to this other ask some time ago about how xiyao and ruoyao are actually very similar in essence.
But there's also Just Something about the most powerful man of their times favoring this little underdog that had had everything against him since he was born. As you said, it's just satisfying to a whole other level to see MY not only be given his due, but way more than he could have asked for bc this is freaking WRH! MY wouldn't just be getting unconditional acceptance from him (and I mean fully unconditional, he would never have to lie to him about killing someone, he'd probably get praised for it lol), but the world in a silver platter too if he asked for it!
Someone refuses to drink from a cup MY poured? Throw them out, plain and simple!
Someone insulted his mom? There's no diplomacy here, that mf is getting gutted.
JGS? Oh hoho let's see how fast Lanling can burn :)))))
I firmly believe that MY is a good person at his core, so it's not like he would go around asking daddy to deal with whoever looks at him funny, but isn't it just So Nice to know that the possibility is there? That someone can truly protect him not just from physical harm, but from the scorn that had followed him all his life. Who's gonna dare question WRH's choice of a new furen?? Shouldn't that be enough of a sign that there's something more to that boy??
Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if slowly the gossip itself started to shift, if subconsciously to avoid WRH's rage,. Suddenly, the fact that he is an unrecognized Jin starts to be more frequent in conversation than who his mom was. Hell, give it some years, and there would be some who would even question the whole "son of a whore" thing bc that's just how society works.
I just think MY deserves to be the one and only person to be on the receiving end of the affections of a man everybody else fears and venerates, that he is just this special bc poor little guy has had it rough enough despite how hard he tries, so I'm not letting him settle for anything less than the man with the power to rule the world

Asdfghjkdfgh w-why yes, I may have one or ten thoughts about them, hi!! Thank you for unleashing my unhingedness :'D
Btw I'm gonna be using mostly the novel for reference here.
So, WRH. First of all, I'd have liked canon info of him, and I know he's just there to fulfil the role of the evil villain during the first part of the story, but I have honestly come to enjoy his character and how ridiculously OP and unapologetic he is. Just a good old classic bad guy that thrives being one.
That being said, I do like that the few info we have also shows that he can care about others. It's very rare and god knows what even are his standards or requirements for that, but something I have discussed with others before is how little he seemed to care about social conventions of his time, like the fact that both MY and WQ were high ranking members of the sect because of their talent and capabilities, and despite being a son of a prostitute and a woman, respectively.
In this vein, i think CQL did him a great diservice putting her and WN in pretty much a hostage situation. That's not to say that he would have take kindly to that branch of the family going against him, but there's a difference between betrayal and actively harming valuable elements for no reason.
(Also the fact that donghua made him a DILF lol)
NOW, going back to the matter of MY, it is very much stated in the book itself that when every other servant had to fall to their knees in WRH's presence, MY was allowed to remain standing and look him in the eye. I know this was just to show how good a job he did earning WRH's trust but asdfghjsdfghj it still does things to my brain!!!
Just how impressed and pleased was WRH with MY to allow him to be so close and take so many liberties??? Also when NMJ was captured and MY was taunting him, WRH intervened when it seemed like NMJ could harm MY. LIKE. I think we can all agree that WRH would be very capable of just letting a random drone be killed for his entertainment, but ACTUALLY and ACTIVELY getting MY out of harm's way??? And they even joked about that together afterwards AAAAHHHH!!!

I don't think it's a stretch to assume that WRH could have seriously considered MY as his new heir since his sons were dead. I mean, the guy probably thought that he would live forever but STILL. And in any case... MY could have been Wen furen.
Like. C'mon!! MY is the poster child of daddy issues (alongside JC), you telling me that he wouldn't have thrived with an older man that recognized his talent and encouraged his natural drive and ambition instead of looking down on him for not staying as the bottom feeder he was "born" to be??? If MY would have changed sides, they would have conquered the world!! And THAT'S what I love so much about this ship!!
Ok, I'm a crazy allyao multishipper, but I have a HUGE soft spot for the ship that would have given MY everything he wanted: safety, power, recognition and care without him having to either give up his ambitions or turn the other cheek and be diplomatic bc society was never going to see him as a worthy person. But as the partner of WRH??? No one would ever be so stupid as to look at him weird ever again!! That's something no other ship can do for him: give him the head of anyone who disrespects him or his mom!!
Also there's this post iirc about how the good guy love interest would always choose what's right over you, but a bad guy love interest would set the world on fire for you and honestly? My poor little meow meow deserves that level of insane devotion after everything he had to go through and how devoted he can be in turn ;u;

I have a question unrelated but is Iggychu quite popular in the Chinese fandom? I heard that NiChu and RoChu were the most popular ships in Mainland but I had a Mainland friend who was an IggyChu shipper, in the Spanish/latino fandom RoChu seems to be the most popular HWS China ship.
It's decently popular yeah! Like I'd say the most popular ship from what I've observed on ao3 and lofter (I don't check weibo often and I only look for my own ships on bilibili) is Rochu by FAR, the 100% most popular ship in Hetalia, no one comes CLOSE to its crazy popularity, and then after that is UKUS (which appears to be second in the JP fandom too after UK/JP), and then after that, Amechu and Rusame/Amerus are also decently popular from my observations. I also see FrUK/dover quite a bit but I'm not sure about exactly where it falls bc I don't rlly seek it out and it's not as in your face as UKUS is. These are like the kings, but Iggychu and Nichu are also pretty popular despite maybe not being in the top 3 and usually get a good amount of content on lofter every week, like 100+ articles, I'd say Iggychu is slightly more popular than Nichu in my experience? Might be diff for weibo/twitter tho these are based on ao3 and lofter numbers only.
In general allyao and allies/yao have a decent following, enough so that you won't go hungry wrt content, it's possible to find pretty niche yaoyao pairings (altho i dont see much indichu or romechu :')) and I have an entire folder of allies/yao longform CN smut bookmarked so. yeah. def relatively popular. All the mains x yaoyao is more popular there, I've read Frachu and Gerchu for an example lol tho side characters I've seen less of... oh and Korchu is more common there than in English fandom afaik.
I'm not that surprised Rochu is big in the Spanish fandom loll it's probably the biggest China ship in all fandoms I've seen xD
