The Lesson (2023)
Tumblr media
Summary: Aspiring author Liam Somers (Daryl McCormack) takes a tutoring position at the house of famous author J. M. Sinclair (Richard E. Grant).
Fine but simple three-hander with gorgeous scenery. McCormack apparently determined to have sex with every esteemed middle-aged European actress.
Rating: 3.25/5

The Lesson    [trailer]
A young author takes a tutoring position at the estate of a legendary writer.
The pace is a little too slow due to the fact that there's not enough story for a whole film. Which gives you time to think about the more contrived elements of the story, like, the server in the next room or his ability to remember whole texts.
The cast still makes it watchable. It's interesting to see Julie Delpy in a more mature role.

i watched the midwich cuckoos and while i had more questions than answers, i would give it a 7/10. i was very confused as to why it had such low ratings on imdb and...wow. and this country really tried to say it was not racist. these reviews by the way, are a response to the diversity in the show. (the original novel had them all blonde with blue eyes, here the kids look different but are clearly the same, explained as having 100% dna from the host mother).

the ironic thing is, it's all under the guise of being more 'believable'. they're all screaming as to why the show would showcase a diverse community where everyone lives together in 'harmony' when, as these lovely people have demonstrated, they would not. they're yelling it's 'woke' because the town wouldn't be that diverse because they're racist so they wouldn't allow it.

I really like the sixth gif, in which the hostess is reflected on the window thing when Sky is talking in unison with her. It's a nice touch. I am also very normal about the use of the word coward in this episode.

The Arthur as the sun comparison is never not going to kill me. Especially because Alice Troughton, a director of the show shot a scene with him as Apollo in mind.

sometimes my mind goes back to Alice Troughton calling Colin "a fantastic rider" and I'm not sure what that says about me

"Midnight" thoughts
i'll be honest i did not super enjoy this rewatch. everyone was so goddamn stupid and annoying it was kind of hard to sit through
i do like bottle episodes and wish we got more of them. donna has a nice relaxing spa day and the doctor tries to go on a field trip and has the worst day of his life. i like how he short-circuits the various bits of entertainment so that they can all talk to each other instead, it was cute. we briefly see rose on one of the music video screens when the doctor's back is turned
bus stops and something outside starts knocking. it starts with two, the dad knocks back 3 times and it repeats, the doctor knocks 4 times and it repeats. there's only one thing i think of when i hear 4 knocks and i'm not sure if it was an intentional reference or not
so the power goes out briefly and something enters the newly divorced lesbian and she's frozen, unable to do anything except repeat what everyone is saying. first normally, then it speeds up so she's speaking at the same time. it's suitably creepy and interesting that this thing is learning, mimicking. i also like that we never see it, learn nothing about it, and have no idea what it is or what it wants. the professor continually insisting nothing could possibly live on midnight just pissed me off, motherfucker do you know what lives in deep sea vents?! have you seen what tardigrades can do?! extonic sun or not
it's a classic hysteria story, like the house md episode set on an airplane. if i were there i would simply not become hysterical so it's hard to relate to these people, lol. eventually the doctor gets possessed too and they go to throw him out the airlock but the hostess realizes the thing never left sky so she murder-suicides them and everyone is saved. the doctor asking at the end what the hostess's name was and no one knows cause they never asked was a good touch
i think i must be spoiled from the last episodes or something cause everyone felt so goddamn annoying. no one was likable and i would have started throwing hands with that annoying ass couple like immediately. i do want to give a shoutout to colin morgan, who was cast in "merlin" bc of his performance in this episode, and the professor who was played by david troughton, son of patrick :) the episode was also directed by alice troughton but she has no relation
so yeah, kind of mid (-night) tbh. really curious about how i'll feel about the next one as i've never rewatched and didn't get all the hype last time

Every time I watch the Merlin audio commentaries I fall more in love with Angel. Actually! Let me rank the cast and crew based on how much I enjoyed listening to their commentaries:
1. Angel Coulby: Amazingly funny, sweet, and witty. Plays off of whoever she's with so well, 10/10 all the best commentaries are the ones she's in
2. Bradley James: Never takes it seriously, loves to have a laugh, isn't afraid to criticise the show but it's clear that it comes from a place of love. Sometimes I wish he'd talk more about the episode but alas
3. Katie McGrath: Will always say what's on her mind, though what's on her mind is usually a bit raunchy. She's unapologetically here to have a good time and she'll fight for Morgana with her dying breath and I respect that
4. Rupert Young: Genuinely loves being a part of Merlin and it shows. Very witty, makes the commentaries feel like you're listening in on two friends watching tv
5. Anthony Head: Very sweet guy, loves to turn a bit camp in his commentaries, always wants to laugh
6. Alice Troughton and Julian Murphy: The two crew members who manage to balance being factual with being funny, they have an interesting rapport with the cast which is fun to get a glimpse of
7. Alexander Vlahos: Silly and loves to run with a joke as far as possible, probably would be higher if he was in more commentaries
8. Colin Morgan: Quite serious and only really likes to talk about the show from Merlin's point of view. Wish he'd talk more and be a bit more personal about his own feelings
9. Richard Wilson: Bless him he's trying his best, not sure he quite understands what audio commentaries are. Spent the whole of one episode just recounting the plot
10. The rest of the crew: Will give you all the behind the scenes facts but I swear if I hear one more time about whether a shot was taken in France or in Wales I will cry
