Harris’s producer having to fucking scroll past multiple videos of James Somerton to get to actual original queer creators is like, heavy handed on the symbolism yeah
(fyi there’s a playlist on the video for the creators mentioned and more)

I totally understand people's concern for James Somerton, but genuinely what has he ever done to deserve this much sympathy. This man has owed the public two things: money and silence. He has given the public 4 non apologies (2 on his old patreon, 2 videos), and a constant string of self-deletion implications. He has offloaded any and all responsibility for things he did onto other people and made it very clear he isn't even smart enough to just steal all the money, take the L, and go away. Before that all he was doing was leading a one man crusade against anyone who didn't want to join the James Somerton pity party, and he's still doing it but more destructively because everyone finally sees the kind of person he is. I keep seeing people post well wishes and hope he will have a safe life, but you won't even get that me. I don't have the energy to care about This Person. I hope everyone this selfish idiot triggered this week has been taking care of themselves. I hope the people he harassed have been able to see they are and always have been bigger than him. I hope everyone who helped expose him understands that you did a necessary thing. I hope his former Co writer never has to speak to him again. And i hope nothing he does ever works ever again. I wish him nothing but existence.

James Somerton sucks, obv, but one plus is that Hbomb's video highlighted the phenomenal queer creators from whom Somerton stole. I'm already in love with Shanspeare, Khadija Mbowe, Alexander Avila, Kaz Rowe. These are just the creators that appeal to me personally, but YouTube never even told me they existed. I doubt I'm the only one and I really hope the creators that were ripped off are seeing a boost in their views and subscribers.
I mean, clearly I'm enjoying watching someone get their comeuppance in real time, but I'm also supposed to be working on being a better person and blah blah whatever, so I'm trying to focus on the high road part of this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So James Somerton can fuck off forever. But I think the really amazing part of the story is the part where Hbomb showed how we can work together and lift each other up instead of only competing and stealing and tearing each other down. It's nice to see it.

guysssss please watch Alexander Avila's latest fucking banger, I've been getting into his videos along with a lot of yall post-plagiarism and you(tube) folks going down the queer recommendations list
this was such a fuckin incredible analysis on the truly bonkers journey of what was essentially an IRL truman show that a lot of us lived through, topped off at the end with
AN INCREDIBLE FUCKING VOCAL PERFORMANCE OF MILEY CYRUS'S 'THE CLIMB'?????
I am not joking when I say I've watched this video several times thus far and I dont even want to think about how many times I've listened to his cover on spotify

So, I've been told that this is Tik-Tok, and that I'm also supposed to hate it because it's supposedly giving the youth transexual autism. And you know what, that upsets me, because that's my job. - Alexander Avila

In light of ..... recent events, I thought it best to remake that recommendations post I did quite a while back. This is a playlist put together by Hbomberguy and it has quite a number of excellent queer video essayists + some people James Somerton plagiarized. I wanted to add a few people to the list.
Jessie Gender - I cannot recommend her enough. She covers issues facing women as well as trans, nonbinary, and autistic people. She also discusses other marginalized communities (Got this info from her YouTube bio). She analyzes media through these lenses while remaining empathetic and often delivering a nuanced take. HOWEVER, that's not all. Jessie does insanely well researched videos about Sci-fi (shout out Star Trek) and other "geeky" topics. She's working on a short film right now so the channel has kinda flatlined. Go give her some views!
Yhara Zayd - I haven't watched them in a bit but Zayd does videos analyzing media, often through the lens of race. Special shout-out to their "The Day Rue 'Became' Black" vid! Their work is eloquent, well researched, and you can find their sources listed in the bio of vids.
Philosophy Tube - Do I even need to say anything??? Go check out the play she wrote, "The Prince." You can find a recording of it on Nebula. I haven't watched it yet but I plan to.
Anyway these creators (and the ones of the playlist) are only a few of the great people analyzing media, talking about queer history, and more. These lists don't even include the numerous writers from whom James stole from. They all deserve support and I hope they get it. If you have any more reccs (including articles), list them below!

I've been getting more into Alexander Avila's Are They Gay Series, because of HBomberguy's James Somerton videos. Cannot recommend more, very good analysis, and beyond that it is so entertaining to see the formula of Alexander putting forward what a ship that is only controversial due to the fact it is gay, having to clarify no singular moments or acts makes the characters inherently gay, going slowly mad at the writers and audience of the show due to the sheer amount of thinly veiled gay subtext surrounding the 2 characters, and having to clarify interpreting characters as being gay is morally different than assuming real life people for people with tumblr level reading comprehension.
