any tips on making moodboards? I been trying & am not very good lol
*cracks knuckles* boy oh boy do I have some tips! or more like a walkthrough i guess?
The first step is to find a good app. I've found InShot to be simple to use (for photos, collages, and videos.) It's available on both android and apple, and while there is a paid version [which takes away ads, gives a few bonus filters, and removes the watermark from video files,] I've found it works just as well to use the paid version. It allows for many different layouts and canvas sizes, and up to nine images.
Next, find images! Think about what kind of moodboard you want to make, and think of some things that are iconic for it. For example, a Wonderland themed moodboard might include clocks and mushrooms and teacups, while a Rapunzel themed moodboard might include flower crowns and chalk drawings. I've found the best way to find an image to use is to google "[thing] aesthetic" or "[color] [thing] aesthetic." I've also found it can give the eye a nice break to include textures, like "[color] crochet blanket texture" or "wooden plank texture aesthetic." It gives your moodboards an almost palpable feel when put together properly.
Once you've found all the images you need, compile them into one image using the collage function on the app. Be sure to pick a layout and size you like. A basic 3 by 3 square is typical, but you can expand beyond that! Some layouts might even let you make some images cut off on the diagonal, or make one image larger than another. Also, this isn't insta; there's no law saying your moodboards have to be square- you could even make them the right size for a phone/computer wallpaper! Make sure to use the in-app crop feature to custom crop them so they're focused on exactly the part of the image you want them to be on. It also helps to rearrange images with a little symmetry (balancing similar colors, shapes, or patterns in opposite corners, thematic elements on opposite sides, ext.)
Next, edit each image. Yes, all of them. Yes, individually. No, don't just slap a filter on it. Trust me, this is so worth it! Here's a before and after of a moodboard's editing phase:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Find whatever "adjust" button your application uses (on inshot it just says "adjust)" and then tap the individual image. Play around with the sliders until you get the look you want for it. This is probably the most time-consuming part of the process, but trust me, it's worth it! The unique, custom filtering of each image will make a difference.
I recommend playing around with the sliders until you find the ones you feel most comfortable with. I tend to use sharpen, vignette (VERY sparingly!) hue, saturation, tint (usually just for green or purple moodboards) warmth (especially for red, orange, or blue moodboards,) contrast, and lightness.
Once you've edited all the images in your moodboard, tap "save" to download it.
Now, most people would be finished right now, but not us! One of my top secrets to making moodboards is, once you've made your moodboard, edit the whole entire thing together- again, using the adjust sliders instead of filters. Editing the whole thing at once adds this rich, uniform feel to it, making it one collage instead of a bunch of images. As an example, here's a moodboard I've made, before and after the bonus filtering:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing I wanna say: whether you're posting on tumblr, insta, or pinterest (or all three, as I do, because I have too much free time,) you can always add alt text! Accessibility should be the standard, and when you add alt text, blind/vision impaired people who use screenreaders can know what your moodboard's about! If you don't know what to write in the alt text box, click the "alt" button on the above images, and you can read the description I used and base it off that!
Lastly, have fun! If moodboards aren't fun for you, don't feel pressured to make them! If you get a request for one you don't want to make, you're totally cool to deny it. Have a blast, babe!

Good food all around but manger named jimmy wasn't the most friendly and wasn't willing to be a team player to the restaurant. Very scrumptious. Perfect lunch after riding all morning. Ordered a pepperoni pizza and cheese sticks and was very impressed. Some of the best pizza I've had in a long time. I would definitely recommend to any one looking for an amazing pizza place. This place was not a good experience. It looked like something out of a horror movie. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the customer service was good. I walked in to the bar area to meet up with my sister in law and her husband. The bartender completely ignored me That's okay, I operate a bar back home and I have patience and kindness. She was very rude to us the whole time. A few other things happened but it's not worth it Clean place for pizza at snowshoe. Great atmosphere and menu is good. Staff is pleasant and takes good care of customers. This was my first stop during my visit to Snowshoe, it was a quick and easy lunch before hitting the slopes. I had low expectations because its pizza at a resort. Staff was super friendly, welcoming and attentive. We got our pizza is a speedy manner. I was surprised with how great it was. The crust was fluffy and there was a generous amount of toppings. We were so pleased with this first experience we knew at that moment we were going to have to come back before our two day stay was over. We went again for dinner and go the exact same thing. So I can only speak on the Hawaiian pizza. If you're into fruit on pizza you must get the Hawaiian. The pizzas, 3 different, weren't good - terrible crust covered with black soot on the bottom, skimpy flavorless toppings, and overall way below the mark of being even decent. Came on a Saturday night during early ski season. The place was pretty packed but we got seated quickly we were there around pm. Really enjoyed the pizza, it was a little greasy but delicious. Our server was nice and the atmosphere was good. The cocktail menu was on the pricey side. I ordered the draft porter which was nice. Would come back again if we were wanting pizza. Great pizza! Crust is fantastic with lots of toppings Try the salad for two with their delicious feta dressing to start. So good! The toasted ravioli appetizer was really good. The pizza really good and unique choices of toppings. The beer selection on craft needs to be expanded. The wait staff was very attentive and had a good experience. Definitely the best pizza in The mountain!!! This is a avg pizza place. It was a tad greasy and the crust seems to be house made which is probably the best part of the pizza. The Pizza Slice. Some more self-indulgent writing! Mainly because of a post @zestyzealot reblogged a while back and inspired this piece.
(This is the post I’m referring to!)
Enjoy!

Marinette huffed as she placed the last crystal bead onto the hem of the black skirt in her hands.
Bringing it to eye level, a wide smile graced her lips, a smile breaking as Marinette giggled to herself as she watched her vision become reality.
Finally! After four long and exhausting days, it was done. When she started on Monday night, Marinette wondered if this project would get in the way of her weekly sleepover with Alya. Thank God it didn’t.
Placing the skirt on her bed, Marinette smiled as she took a picture of her latest piece for her new collection: 12 o’ clock.
That’s when the hatch on her floor opened up with a creak, Marinette watching as her father poked his head into her room. Why was he here?
“Marinette, there’s someone here looking for you.” He said, giving a side glance down below. “Please tell me he’s just a school friend and not another boy you asked to model for you.”
“Dad, I already told you, Luka is Juleka’s older brother, he- wait, he? It’s not Alya?” Marinette asked, wondering where her best friend was at.
Yes, Alya gave her a heads up that she was running late for their sleepover, but she wasn’t downstairs yet? And her father had said ‘he’ instead of a guy friend’s name, so… who exactly was waiting for her downstairs?
Because despite only saying the name once, her father tended to commit to memory the names of all of her male friends. “What does he look like?”
“Well, he’s a bit on the short side,” Tom started, “has green eyes, tanned, wearing a turtleneck with some of those suit pants-”
“Slacks.” Marinette helped.
“Those,” Tom corrected himself, “and he has a dog with him.” Tom ended, watching as Marinette mumbled to herself.
Marinette didn’t know anyone with a dog, nonetheless with that type of fashion, causing Marinette to start pacing around her room, racking up some idea as to who it was that was in the living room. “He called the dog Titus, if memory serves me correctly. Or if I heard correctly for that matter.”
That caused Mari to stop in her tracks.
A turtleneck with slacks, a Great Dane named Titus, tanned skin...emerald eyes.
“No. Way.” Marinette quickly motioned her father to go down the ladder, quickly following him into the living room, her eyes widening upon seeing her theory be true.
There, standing inside the Dupain-Cheng living room was Damian Wayne with his dog, Titus.
“Took you long enough.” Damian said, adjusting the duffel bag on his shoulder. Titus wagged his tail as he saw his boy open the bag and give him his toy.
Just then, the door swung open, Alya panting as she dropped to the floor as soon as she walked in.
“Girl, you wouldn’t believe who I just saw! There, as soon as I turned the corner of where I lived, I saw the Damian Wayne with his dog, and- why is he in your living room?”
“Seeing as you finally caught up,” Damian said, walking over to Alya, handing her a heavy plastic bag. “Take care of Titus while we’re out.”
“We?” “We?” “We?!”  Alya, Tom and Marinette spoke at the same time, although Marinette’s came out as a squeak.
“Did you forget what you told me?” Damian waved his phone that was in his hand. Marinette watched as he showed her a tweet...her tweet in particular, Marinette now going into a state of panic. “You invited me to egg-” Marinette screamed, her cheeks flushed in embarrassment as she lowered his phone and dragged him out the apartment, leaving behind a confused Tom and a giddy Alya.
———
“You actually read that?” Marinette asked once more, covering her cheeks as they walked towards the park square.
“I did.” Damian hummed as he adjusted the egg cartoons under his arm, a dangerous twinkle in his emerald eyes.
Marinette let out a silent screech, confusing Damian. “Did you think I wouldn’t read it?” When he saw her nod, he sighed. “I read every comment left under any post I write. Sure, I don’t respond to any of them, but your comment… seemed… interesting.”
Marinette wanted to disappear into a black hole. Damian actually read that stupid comment she had left under his post.
It was a post from earlier that week - a picture Damian had uploaded from the recent animal shelter he was volunteering at (as well as funding).
Another post about an animal up for adoption, this time, a hamster named Louis.
Marinette was scrolling through the comments under the post after retweeting it, when a particular one caught her attention.

<3 ACNH is Life <3 @eliza_beth
Replying to @Real_BloodSon I have a pet chicken and just wanted to ask if the candle method is a good method to check for egg development.  If so, then are they safe to eat? If not, what’s a better method?
-
Everyone knew Damian loved to offer help when it came to animals -as it was no secret- but something stupid inside of Marinette thought she should do the only logical thing in her mind.
She commented on it.

Deadlines Are Approaching @a_mari_not_bug
Replying to @eliza_beth and @Real_BloodSon If it turns out that it is a good method, can I have some eggs? I’ve been wanting to egg someone's house as of late. @Real_BloodSon care to join?
-
Marinette didn’t think he would actually read it, let alone actually come. Wait…
Damian lives in the US, not France, unlike her.
So how did he know where she lived, let alone reside?
“How did you know where I live?” Marinette asked, realizing they were finally at the park, right across from the targeted house, not even realizing that she had brought him over to the house in question.
Damian blinked, setting the cartons down onto the bench.
“Tsurugi told me.”
“You know Tsurugi. As in Kagami Tsurugi?” Marinette asked, wondering where he had met her friend.
Damian nodded.
“We met during the semifinals for the international fencing competition.”
Oh. So that’s how they knew each other.
Damian let a smirk grace his lips. “Obviously, I won.”
Marinette simply looked at him in awe, causing Damian’s ego to soar more. Of course, that didn’t overcome the other feeling he had inside his chest.
After all, there was no way he was going to tell her that he has been following her account for quite a while.
So using the amounts of aesthetic pictures, selfies, bakery promos and mini photo shoots, it didn’t take long for Damian to pinpoint where she lived.
That’s not following Damian. It’s called stalking.
Okay Drake, but in his defense:
1- it was his side account that he uses for his own personal interests.
Damian didn’t exactly like having thousands of people following him because he was a Wayne. He wanted to be followed for being Damian.
2- he had been following her for quite a while.
Two solid years to be exact.
After exchanging social media accounts with Kagami, Marinette was one of the few people Twitter recommended to follow.
Marinette peaked his curiosity when Kagami mentioned Marinette being the person behind her “lucky” fencing bag. (Although, she didn’t want to admit that she used it as a luck charm.) It was an all black duffel bag, enchanting golden embroidery that collected to a single dragon.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Kagami had provided. A girl in her grade from her school in France, who designed the most intricate designs Damian had seen. (Yes, he has seen all of her sketches and final products of the things she had designed…yes it did involve scrolling through her photos and accidentally liking all of them as he went…)
3- it was too late to press that “follow” button when he already kinda didn’t do it as soon as she followed his own account.
When he finally noticed that she did already follow him, he didn’t know what to do. Should he follow her back?
“Not yet.” Dick had told him. But just how long did he have to wait? He was stupid for listening to Dick’s advice and he definitely wasn’t going to follow her back now. Or should he?
“So,” Marinette started again, looking around the area, scanning to see that no one saw them. “Have you ever done this before?”
“As in egging a house?” Damian watched as Marinette nodded, wondering if this was her first time doing this. “No, but it shouldn’t be any different than throwing snowballs.” Damian compared, remembering last year’s winter.
Jon had managed to convince the Wayne’s and the Kent’s to do a snowball fight.
The Wayne’s obviously won.
“Guess you have a point.” Marinette replied, attempting to vision Damian’s analogy. She picked up an egg and looked at it and then at the window of the person who had been causing her turmoil these past few days. “Are you… are you sure you want to go with this?”
“Aren’t you?” Damian asked, awaiting Marinette’s signal. He had perfectly balanced a dozen eggs into the nook of his arm, one being juggled in his other hand.
He was ready and from the twinkle in his eyes, eager to throw.
Marinette found herself smiling, letting out a laugh as she grabbed a few eggs herself and balanced them in her hand.
“Between you and I, I've been dreaming of doing this for the longest.” Marinette said with the biggest grin Damian had seen her with that night. “Ready?”
“Always.” Damian replied, mirroring her grin as the two looked at the target, Marinette throwing the first attack.
-
Bonus:
Marinette hummed as she doodled in her sketchbook, her mind wandering to last night’s events.
She hadn’t known how much stress she had built up thanks to Lila and her constant need to be the attention of everything.
The messes Marinette had to clean up due to Lila causing disorder during class and after class, all because of Lila and her gazillion and one ‘medical’ problems.
Marinette didn’t realize how emerged she was towards throwing eggs -with great accuracy- towards Lila’s bedroom window until she threw her last egg.
She remembered how satisfying it was to have thrown all of those eggs at the window, that glee when Damian smiled at her.
How happy she was when Damian complimented her for her graceful and precise throws despite the low lightning of the park lights.
Marinette placed her pencil down as she finished adding some last minute touches to the coat she had finished designing when Alya slammed her hands in front of her. Marinette quickly looked up at her friend, tilting her head when she was met with twinkling eyes.
“Did you hear what happened to Lila last night?” Alya whispered, causing Marinette to quickly tense.
“N-no? What happened?” Marinette asked, closing her sketchbook.
“Her house got egged. Well, her bedroom window did.” Alya corrected herself, watching as Marinette let out a gasp.
“No way! Poor Lila.” Marinette looked over to Lila, watching as she was surrounded by their classmates to gather to listen to her woeful story. “Who would ever do such a thing?”
“Beats me.” Alya said, looking at Marinette, a faint smile on her lips. “You and Damian wouldn’t happen to have been involved-”
“Us?” Marinette instigated, causing Alya to lean forward. “You think Damian and I would do something that stupid and not think of the consequences that awaited us? No way.” Marinette denied, causing Alya to sigh.
“Should’ve known you wouldn’t be up to it. Only you would step down after overthinking about the consequences.” Alya said as she patted her head before taking a few steps from Marinette. “Not like anyone would know who it was since the security cameras of the area seemed to have gone off at that time, strangely enough. Maybe if I hear what Lila has to say about the event, I’ll get some hints as to who it was.”
With that, Alya left to go and listen to Lila, leaving Marinette by herself.
Finally alone, Marinette let out a sigh, feeling her back relax. She felt as a smile rose to her face.
Giddily, she took out her phone to send Damian a text when a Twitter notification caught her attention.
She quickly checked it, her smile growing even more. She went back to sending Damian a text.
You bugged the cameras last night?
Damian: A necessary precaution.
Marinette giggled at his response.
Also, I saw you started following me. Now we’re mutuals!
Damian liked your message.
Damian: It was only a matter of time, seeing as we egged your enemy’s home.
More like someone I dislike.
Damian: Same thing.
Damian: Query. Would you like to join Titus and I for a walk at the park?
Sure! Class ends at 3. Meet you then?
Damian: Titus and I would await you then.
Marinette grinned as she placed her phone away as the school bell rang, signaling the beginning of class.
She couldn’t wait to spend time with her newfound friend! Who knows what mischief awaited the two!

omg hiiiii i am here from cat (@luvdsc) wondering if you could offer any advice about college apps 🙏 especially about the uc piqs? thank you so much i hope ur doing well!!!!!!!!
yes yes hello friend !! 💝 miss cat directed you to me because i did my college apps last year !!! (yikes one year passed already?? why does that feel ages ago 🤧)
first of all, congratulations on making the decision to apply to college !! i know it’s been hard for a lot of people our age to figure out the college situation recently, so i’m proud of you for choosing to take the extra step this summer to buckle up and write those essays 💞
i’ve compiled a few tips on answering the PIQs (i was actually in the middle of typing this up when i received your ask haha), but some of them can be applied to other essays, as well !! they’re all under the cut (because, unfortunately, being brief is not my forte) 😊
(and for reference, the prompts i chose were #2 (creativity), #6 (subject), #7 (community), and #8 (anything) !!)
tip #1: understand the prompt.
before you even begin writing, it’s important to understand what the question is really asking. for the UC PIQs, this will look different depending on which four prompts you decide to do.
in question one, for example, they want to know about your skills in leading others, but notice that they’re also curious about your resolution abilities and teamwork experience. or in question two, they don’t want to know that you paint and that you love painting—they could be asking how resourceful you are, how you think outside the box when you have an idea.
once you know the question you’re going to be answering, you can move on to brainstorming!
tip #2: write down three (3) key takeaways.
these are like the most basic, not-even-a-sentence answers you would give to each question. so for me, in response to question eight (“what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for the UCs?”), my answers were perseverance, courage, and character. i had a story about that, so i wrote about my experience with martial arts.
i recommend you do something similar. decide on three things that you want to communicate to your audience, and write them in the footnote of your document. your goal is to cover all three points so that, if anyone were to read your essay, they would walk away understanding those three things about you.
i found this strategy really helpful for keeping my essay streamlined while writing—if a sentence didn’t relate to any of those main points, i would cut it since those words would take up valuable space in the word count. stay focused on what needs to be in this essay, and if you have extra words left in the word count later, you can add those details back in.
and once you’re done with your essay, make sure to refer back to your takeaways and check that you covered all of them sufficiently!
tip #3: highlight your stories.
i sent cat an ask a couple days ago with a few pictures of my response to an end-of-year college counseling survey that referenced this tip (you can find it here). basically i said that, when choosing what topics to write about, pick things that interest you! if you get excited talking about it, your audience should get excited about reading it, because they’ll pick up on the passions you have and then everyone’s excited !!! :D
i’ll tell you a secret: everyone you meet, everyone you see, has countless unique experiences that few others may have. me? i spend hours making mashups out of kpop songs. i earned my black belt years after a traumatizing experience during training. i get russian harry potter and spanish dr. seuss books from the library. and i created a collaborative online google photos album for my classmates that now has thousands of entries. although these aren’t necessarily unique to only me, they’re still special enough to the point where, when you put them all together, you get a better image of the person i am, and what i value.
so find a story, a habit, a hobby that makes you different, because i believe that everyone has them. give them some food for thought, or that one-liner that sticks in their brain and won’t go away. and remember: these stories don’t all have to be extraordinary—they should be about people or moments of special value to you, because that’s what matters.
personal tip: when i was brainstorming ideas, i decided that the best way to get ideas out there was to go on a rant (because sometimes it helps to just have a conversation with yourself !!) and i recorded myself, so i could replay what i said !! this was so so crucial to me finding my own voice for writing essays. notice the way you word things when you talk—a good line or two may make it into the final draft :)
i found it helpful to read sample essays as well! they give a lot of great ideas on the kinds of topics people write about. (also, it’s kind of fun, because who doesn’t love a good story?)
but the people reading your essay won’t be there to just enjoy your story; what they really want you to do is to tell them what you learned from your experience. they want to know whether you’re teachable and willing to grow both as a student and as a young adult. so make sure to take note of the life lessons you learned, experience you gained, character you built, etc.
minor tip on ending your essay: if you’re telling a story that happened in the past, then close with what you learned and how you can apply that to your life moving forward. if you’re telling a story that has no definite end yet (like a passion or dream you have), you probably don’t have everything figured out (and you can say that in your essay!), so it might be better to close with your hopes for the future.
tip #4: ask your family for help.
peer-editing is one of the most effective ways to detect errors and inconsistencies in your writing, because, after staring at your essay for so long, you might gloss over glaring contradictions. for all of my essays, i printed them out and asked my parents to help me revise them. we’d meet every other night (or every night, depending on how much time was left) to review and discuss improvements.
i actually kept some of those printed drafts (only the first and the final ones for comparison), and let me tell you from experience—you’re probably going to have a lot of drafts (i think the most i did was seven? but you don’t need to go that far!). this part of the process does take some time, so remember to be patient and kind to yourself :) these essays won’t happen overnight!
enlisting the help of others also helps keep you accountable. one of the struggles many seniors face while writing essays is just... setting aside time to do them. and even though the constant reminders from your parents will definitely get repetitive and a bit stress-inducing, i can tell you from personal experience that i’m so glad they did; otherwise, i don’t think i’d have my essays done in time :’)
while writing college essays is challenging, your family will be there supporting you each step of the way. chances are that they’ll have their own pointers to pass on to you, since they probably remember doing this process themselves! and, out of everyone in your life, they probably remember the most about you (because you probably don’t remember much when you were four or five), so they might have a couple starter ideas for topics when brainstorming. you can rely on them for their advice and their experience.
tip #5: self-editing.
here’s the part that takes the longest time.
use action words. this is probably something you’ve heard all throughout elementary school where they didn’t like you to say “said” because it was “boring”… but honestly, the difference between “doing my own version” and “infusing it with my personality” could go a long way. also, use words that you would actually use in an essay—then it’ll have your own special flair, and not sound like it’s taken from some stuffy 80s textbook!
here are some of the words i used (once again, you shouldn’t use these words if they don’t sound like something you’d write/say): potential, overlay, wrestle, launch, analogous, weave, infuse, experiment, outlet, revel, fascinate, satisfaction, pursue, expand, distinction, capture, range, archive, engage, beyond, build, adversity, cultivate, preserve, commit, explore, convey, naturally
also, be on the lookout for repeated words. i once wrote an essay without noticing that i used “hope” three times in the same paragraph. don’t do that! use synonyms :) personally, i tended to run short on synonyms, so i always kept a tab or two open on my computer reserved for searching up new words.
side note: unfortunately, during my search for synonyms, i discovered that thesaurus.com just didn’t give me what i was looking for. i highly recommend using wordhippo instead; it has so many more options and they’re grouped by the different definitions of your word! i found the synonyms i needed really quickly and it was very satisfying!
avoid the passive voice! my teacher gave me this tip for theses or any other college-level writing. here’s an example of the passive voice: “there was a large part of me that wanted to turn back.” that’s twelve words taking up precious space in your word count! instead, say something like, “i considered turning back.” you’ve just freed up eight words :)
tip #6: final revisions.
this is the step where you fine-tune your essays. meet that word count.
read your writing out loud. does it sound like you? it should. every writer has a different voice, and you need to ensure that yours is pervasive throughout your essay. feel free to use contractions—not only do they reduce your word count (this was a good thing for me, since i had a problem with getting under 350 words), but they also give a more casual tone to your essay, as if you’re telling a story to someone in the room.
next, pretend to be an admissions officer and have someone else read your essay to you. do you get excited hearing about this student who shares your name? if you do, there’s a good chance the real admissions officers will love your essays, too. this also gives you a chance to review to your essay as a whole. pay attention to the overall flow. is there a clear beginning and end? do you resolve the issues and overcome the trials you brought up? listen to it as if it’s a story, and take this time to enjoy what you’ve written. you worked hard!
final thoughts / encouragements.
oh my goodness, did we make it to the end? honestly if you did, thank you so much 🥺
okay but despite my relatively optimistic tone throughout this post, i’m still going to be honest with you—the college essay writing process is difficult. it requires you to look inside yourself and analyze the “why” behind some of the things that you love, and that isn’t easy to do at all. it’s intellectually and emotionally challenging, because not only do you need to use so much energy writing, but you also have to dig deeper to understand yourself, and that’s not easy, either.
but i wanted to encourage you, too. no matter what you may think of yourself at 12am, 2am, 4am writing these essays, believe you have a personality that others love and will love when they meet you. you are an interesting person with unique experiences who deserves to share your thoughts with others. you have so many people behind you, supporting you during these next few months. and when you find that you can’t write any more, remember to take time to care for yourself. have a warm shower. go to bed early. i could go on and on about why sleep is good for your brain but i’ll spare you the details in this post 😉
one last thing: keep the bigger picture in focus. remember, by december or january, you will be finished with most of the application process. that’s no small accomplishment. you can do it. 💝

sabrina @lanwangiji, my love, tagged me to share my process of making this typography edit! check out her explanation of her the untamed edit and her edit tag.
1. PLANNING
i once opened lyrics edit requests so i can learn and practice typography. this edit was a request as well. i asked them which lyrics they wanted to have and the colors they’d like. since i got several requests and it was hard to keep tabs on them, i made a trello board so i could organize everything. i’m still using the trello board for every edit idea i have, the board makes my life easier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
above is what i filled the card in the board with. basically just information of the requests.
1.1 INSPIRATION
once i got the request, my first thought was to find the vibe the song/lyrics exude. “it’s an old curse” screamed witchy vibes to me, so i went to pinterest to find some inspirations. at first i was looking for witchy poster designs and i came across this. i liked how it has smoke-ish graphic and i thought the smoke suited the “old curse” lyrics. and tbh pinterest is a rabbit hole, they gave me suggestions after suggestions, like this and this which became my inspiration for the color palette (i added the gold from those pics) and the sun moon design gave me the idea to incorporate space stuffs too. i somehow landed on this too, and because i wanted to include space theme, i made a simple phases of the moon. ultimately the hero of this edit was the lyrics, i didnt want the graphics took the center stage. i was inspired to make a crystal ball and do this kind of typography but after several trials i couldnt get the the typography right, so i scratched that idea and went with the space theme instead.
1.2 PICKING COLORS
after i was feeling inspired enough, i went looking for the right colors. i usually just type “color name” and “palette” on pinterest. example “dark grey color palette” and i chose the one i liked best. when the request only asked for 1 color, i always searched for either a complimentary or contrasting color to give it a jushz, to add sprinkles. that’s why i added gold on top of the dark grey.
1.3 FINDING FONTS
this is the hardest part. the fonts play important role to the design. they need to convey the vibes of the lyrics, in this case witchy/magic vibe. i needed to find fonts or font just as magical and a bit whimsical. tho i hoard fonts... i like to use new font for every typography edit lmao sue me.
i highly recommend going to creativemarket free goods site, pixelsurplus font freebies and behance to search for fonts. i always use 100% free fonts, that means i can use it personally as well as commercially. creativemarket gives me desktop license for the fonts, which means i can use it for commercial as well. the reason i do this because i want to open an etsy shop someday, and i want to have the right license when i sell my stuffs. i almost never buy fonts bc they are expensive lmao.
the fonts in used are “Vintage” for the main typograpy (i think i was a freebie from creativemarket) and “Morganite” for the title of the lyrics and the name of artist.
2. CREATING
once i have my materials and ideas, i open my illustrator and hope it doesnt crash every 5 min.
for this kind of typography edits, i use 600x700 px. tbh i dont like using 540px, the suggested tumblr size, as the width bc to me it doesn’t look as good in quality, so i up the px. but more on this sizing later. i utilize the artboards function in illustrator, and i use 2 artboards.
i use illustrator (ai) bc i’m working with vectors. when i work with vectors, the graphics/texts or whatever im making in ai wont become blurry or lose its quality when i enlarge or shrink it. in compare to photoshop, i need to make for example the moon graphic very big, so i wont lose the quality when i reduce and enlarge it again. with vector, i can start small and when i expand it, it’s still as good as when it’s tiny.
2.1 GRADIENTS
i started with the gradients first. i created a rectangle as big as 600x700px and with the “freeform gradient” tool in ai, i played with the colors. below is the color palettes i used
Tumblr media
2.2 LYRICS AND GRAPHICS
once the gradients are done, i worked with the lyrics and graphics right away. when i first doing this edits, i made typos a lot lmaooooooo. so i copy and pasted the lyrics on top of my artboard, so i wouldnt have any typos.
i had 3 layers in my ai. one for the inspo pics and the OG lyrics. the rest for the edits themselves. i broke up “It's an old curse/dreamers diving headfirst” into to parts, hence the 2 more layers
i almost always started with the lyrics first then the graphics. but for this edit, i made the smoke first so i can layout where my text would be.
tbh the process of making the lyrics is a trial and error. i tried bunch of different stuffs and i chose whatever the best. but i worked like methodically, i made sure i finished the first part of the lyrics first then i could move on.
i was lucky with this font “vintage”. the font offers me several glyphs like these
Tumblr media
and i chose the one at the bottom. you’re very lucky if you find a font and they have glyphs.
excursion: glyphs vs fonts
glyph is an individual character. It might be a letter, an accented letter, a ligature, a punctuation mark, a dingbat, etc.
A font is a digital file which is used to display a typeface, which contains the entire upper- and lowercase alphabet as well as punctuation, numbers, and other special characters.
after i was finished with all the lyrics i added some graphics to make the edit pretty like small stars or dots. i added the song title and the artist too, sometimes at the bottom sometimes at the top. and i added my watermark put it as small as i could and made it a bit invisible but still can be seen.
2.3 EXPORTING
exporting! this is where i’m going to go deeper with the dimension of my work. in ai, i always choose to save with “export as screens” function. it automatically divides the artboards i have and save them separately. i always save as png, bc the size is smaller than jpg but can maintain the quality.
now the export tab looks like this
Tumblr media
see the formats? i always scale up my edits, 2-3 times the original artboard size. reason is, to maintain the quality. i have tried to save it as original, 600x700 px, but it turned out a bit blurry. bc everything in ai is vector, when i scale up it doesnt lose the quality. BUT once i save it as png, it’s not a vector anymore, and when you zoom in until a certain degree it’ll be pixelated. that’s why i always scale up, to avoid it becoming pixelated when it’s just zoomed 1 or 2 times.
2.4 FINAL TOUCH
i opened my photoshop and also pray it won’t crash. import the png of my edits, add some grains/noise. the reason i use photoshop is, the noise filter is way better than in ai. it’s smoother somehow. and then i export my edits.
(i have a timelapse of how i made one of my edits, it’s not this one, but it’ll give you a better visualization. find it HERE
3. POSTING
now the hardest parts are done, we go to posting!
i uploaded the 2 posters on tumblr as photos then i wrote the captions. for this typography edit, i always chose another lyrics that i like from the same song for the caption. i bolded the lyrics, add link to all of my typography gradient edits.
i always use this link to color my caption. i usually choose 3-4 colors, and i took the colors from my edit. but this was not until recently lmao. before i just took a guess and looked for similar colors that match the edit, but then i thought “why didnt i just use the color in the posters lmao”
ok after i have my html code for the caption, i go to this site to replace the “;” with “ “ so tumblr can read the code.
i’m not one who puts their edits in draft, bc i just cant wait to post it. i have to option here, either i post it immediately when the time is right (i usually post between 4-8) or i schedule it, if im finished before 4.
i put all the necessary tags and click post! i am done finally!
i’m tagging:
@thetriangletattoo for this amazing series
@deludedandlostcause for this impressive gif
@half-lightl for this spectacular edit
@gayndrew for this stunning drawing
@thechampagnelovers for this cool collage

Nutshell Cleromancy in a nutshell (or: a beginner’s guide to cleromancy)
Hi, I’m Lucy! I’m pretty new to witchblr, but I’ve been practicing witchcraft for a while now and I wanted to share with you all a specific technique of fortune-telling I’ve come to use regularly in my personal life and for others: nutshell cleromancy.
What is cleromancy?
Cleromancy is defined as ‘divination by throwing dice or any such marked objects, like beans, pebbles, or bone.’
What can I use cleromancy for?
Anything you’d use other divination for! Guidance, help, insight. It’s not as detailed as let’s say tarot, but it is more specific in answering simpler questions.
Is cleromancy really witchcraft?
As it is a form of divination, yes! It is like tarot or any other form of divination based on ‘randomness’ in which we prescribe meaning to a seemingly random occurrence and believe that fate or another power has guided the ‘random’ event.
Is cleromancy a new thing?
No, not at all! Although it has taken many different forms through the ages and cultures, people have practiced cleromancy for centuries. It’s present in ancient cultures all around the world.
Why use nutshells?
In history, a lot of cleromancy was practiced through the reading of bones or seeds, emphasizing the importance of the use of objects related to the cyclical nature of life. I was taught to use nutshells, and have had great results with them more so than say pebbles or plastic dice, which is a clear signal to me.  However, like many forms of witchcraft, cleromancy is a way to express your personal connection to fate and/or higher powers, and you should decide on the proper tools to suit your own traditions and craft.
Is cleromancy culturally charged?
This is a hard question to answer, but an important one! The modern witch must take care not to appropriate other cultures and take into consideration the historical contexts of all practice. I know ‘casting of lots’ or a form of reading thrown bones is mentioned in the Hebrew bible, and this is one of the reasons I have shied away from using bones in my own cleromancy. I am not aware of any cultural history behind the use of nutshells for cleromancy, but if anyone does know of anything like that, please let me know! It is our shared duty to make sure we are respectful to all cultures.
What materials do I need?
The beauty of this practice is that it is, in its essence, very bare-bones (get it?). You need a few nutshells that meet some criteria I’ll specify in a bit and that’s it. Of course, if your practice requires you to use certain other materials (crystals, candles, herbs etc.) in your rituals those should be used in your cleromancy process as well. Now, for those criteria:
The nut shells you pick must be able to lie flat on one side. Walnut shells, pistachio shells, that sort of deal. Nutshell cleromancy is about which side of the shell lands upwards, so it’s important that your shells have a defined top and bottom.
If your shells of choice have an inherent asymmetry (as pistachio shells do, for example) you need to use matching sets. This doesn’t mean you have to use both sides of one nut, but for every ‘left-facing’ shell you have to use a ‘right-facing’ one as well.
How many shells do I need?
You’re gonna need 4 shells at least, but you can expand your ‘hand’ as it’s called. In essence, this is what you need:
One marked shell. Many nuts, when you buy or harvest them, have natural imperfections. One of these shells can serve as your marked piece, but if your shells come without any apparent deviants, you can mark a normal shell by carving, colouring or otherwise altering it. Keep in mind you have to be able to see the deviancy from both sides of the shell.
Sets of normal shells. Whether asymmetrical or not, you should use an even number of normal shells for cleromancy. Two shells (one set) is the minimum, but you can use as many as you want. Just keep it even and keep in mind that more shells are more difficult to interpret.
Broken shells. For every set of two normal shells, you need a single shell fragment or broken shell. These still need to be able to lie on one of two sides.
This is an example of a possible hand:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A photo showing pistachio shells laid out on a wooden table. There are three sets of two shells, three fragments of shells and one shell that bears an orange/brown discoloration. /End ID]
I have my shells. What do I do?
A cleromantic reading has three stages: the question, the throw and the reading. I’ll discuss these separately:
For the question stage, you take a question in mind that you want the answer to. As the nature of nutshell cleromancy depends on the dichotomy of up and down, it will best serve you to phrase your question in a way that allows for two answers and no more. A yes or no question works very well for this, but a choice between any two options is fine. Don’t worry, you’re not limited to extremes: the reading of the shells accounts for degrees of certainty/severity. I’ll explain this later.
Now, for the throw: take all your shells in one hand, shake them an even number of times around and let them fall down gently on a flat surface like a table. If you have an altar space for your practice, that’s the ideal spot! If you have any actions you’d like to incorporate, such as lighting candles or saying incantations, do them before you throw the shells. When your shells have all landed, the actual reading can begin. That’s the fun part!
When reading your shells, these are the basic principles:
Your marked shell is your most basic answer. If you asked a yes or no question, hollow side up means yes, and hollow side down means no. If you asked another question, you have to make sure beforehand you establish which side up is which answer.
Your normal shells represent a degree of certainty/severity. The more shells have their hollow side up, the more certain/accurate your divination will be. If they all land hollow side up, it’s bad luck to ask more on the subject or ask again. Any other results welcome more questions on the subject, so don’t be afraid to specify your question and throw more than once until you get an all-up result. If they all land hollow side down, you might want to consider rethrowing with the same question another time or using another form of divination.
Your fragments represent clarity. The more they land hollow side up, the more likely it is that your answer is straight-forward and should be interpreted that way. If the majority of your fragments land hollow side down, there’s likely a second meaning or a deeper layer to your answer. Throw again if you’d like, unless all your normal shells landed the same way (as described above).
Can you show us an example of a throw?
Of course! I’m so glad you asked. I’ll be using the hand pictured above, with three sets and three fragments, as I personally find this to be a good balance between specificity and readability.
For my example throw, I’ll use a question related to my garden. This will be my question: Should I harvest my nettles soon or let them grow further? Because this is not a yes-or-no question, I’ll keep in mind that the first answer is hollow side up, and the second answer is hollow side down. Now, let’s throw! Here’s the result:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: The shells lay scattered on a wooden table. The marked shell is facing downward, as are three of the normal shells and one of the fragments. This leaves three normal shells and two fragments lying face up. /End ID]
As you can see, the result favours letting the nettles grow. It has a normal amount of certainty in this, 3 shells, but there is another factor to be considered: the majority of my fragments is lying face up, which means I should think a little on this question. For me specifically, this means I’ll be using my nettles for something else than I was planning on.
Anything else I should keep in mind?
There’s a few little notes and thoughts I have, so I’ll put those here:
Nutshell cleromancy is great for the visually impaired witch! This is because it relies on the shape of the shells on the table, which can be determined by touch. Of course, you would need to alter your marked piece in such a way that you can feel the marking, but that’s very doable.
I tend to re-use my shells, as I don’t have a nut tree or something like it and nuts from the store are a rarity for me. However, the witch I learned this from buries her shells after every few throws and selects a new hand, which might fit well into your practice.
You can sort the shells once they’ve fallen onto the table, so that you have a clearer picture of how many of everything there is.
There is more to reading shells. When you throw shells, they might fall onto each other and overlap, forming patterns. I might make a post about some of those if you guys are interested!
And that’s the basics! The process of throwing shells is very quick and gives great insight, so I highly recommend it to all of you! Let me know if you have any questions and/or are interested in that follow-up on multi-shell patterns. Until then, stay well and happy!

How to make money from a Mini Farm: a mini series
Due to the popularity of my post on how to make money from your mini farm, I’ve decided to go point by point and expand on each one
Selling eggs for eating
1) Hens only, roosters forbidden
If you selling eggs for consumption, they will be easiest to sell if they are unfertilized.  This is what the consumer market is used to, and some people are grossed out by eating what could become a chick. Though studies are unclear if eating fertilized eggs is any different than eating sterile eggs, some studies do show that there are more amino acids in fertilized eggs.  You could easily market your fertilized eggs as free roaming hens living a natural fulfilled life and sell these eggs to people who are willing to pay more for their eggs to come from happy hens.
2) Know your laws
Egg laws are different from state to state.  You’ll need to be sure to check the regulations for your particular area and comply with them.  You can see a comprehensive list of each states laws governing selling eggs on the National Egg Regulatory Officials website – NERO.
3) Keep track of how many eggs your hens produce
It’s good to have an average weekly egg count.  Knowing your average and your personal use will let you determine how many eggs you’ll have to sell each week. Traditionally, eggs are sold by the dozen or half dozen.
4) Packaging your eggs
You have a few options when it comes to packaging your eggs; but again be sure you comply with the regulations for your state.  First, you can put your eggs in containers similar to those you find in stores.  As an environmentally friendly blog, I recommend that you ask friends or family for egg cartons or post on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace requesting used, clean cartons.  You could also ask your buyers to bring their own containers and offer a discount if they do.
5) What to call your eggs
When you are selling eggs you need to know egg terminology. Hens can be cage-free – still contained in a specific area.  Or free-range – given nearly limitless access to plants, bugs, dirt, etc.  Then you have to consider the feed offered. What about organic?  Soy free? You’ll need to decide where your eggs fit in.  Remember your hens are not free-ranging chickens just because they are not in a cage. The pricing of your eggs can vary a great deal, depending on the options you offer.
6) Pricing
In Phoenix, organic, free-range, soy-free eggs go for $7-$8 a dozen at the Farmer’s Market; and they sold out.  But you’ll need to do some market research.  Start with your local stores, farmer’s markets and then check ads on Craigslist or local Facebook groups.  Make sure you’re pricing with the market.
But remember if you’re offering a superior product you can charge more, but you’ll need to back that up with the reasoning.  People love to see where their food comes from.  Keep pictures of your hens and I encourage you to make a Facebook business page for your hens so that people can click through the photos and see that you’re not just all talk.  It helps to have a picture of their feed bag available so people can see the ingredients and quality.
7) Finding your customers
Start with those you know.  Put an offer out on your Facebook or Instagram with what you have available.  You might consider a Craigslist ad or putting up a flyer in a local community area. If you have a lot of eggs you might consider renting space at a local farmer’s market – but you will need to adjust your prices to cover your expenses.
8) Growing your business
So what do you do if selling eggs is taking off and your hens can’t keep up? Well you can limit your orders and keep a waiting list for future clients if someone decides to stop buying.  You can always consider adding girls to your flock – but weigh out the profit to expense and time for care.  Remember that although they have a reputation for being stupid, chickens are living creatures who feel happiness, fear, excitement, and sadness.  Make sure your hens are all well cared for before increasing your flock just for profit. If you are starting to get stretched thin, you can always set up hens with friends who would like eggs in payment for caring for a few chickens in their space; they get their set amount of eggs for the work and you get the rest to sell.

Do you have any tips on drawing hair? I’m trying to distance myself from cartoony blob hair but it’s really hard!!
I feel you, hair is super hard to figure out- here’s some insight into how I do mine
1. Instead of focusing on fine details like individual strands I, like you, like to focus on solid shapes with solid colour filling. But instead we’re creating the idea of hair with either: Lines of movement (a few drawn lines indicating how the hair flows) and/or Light (using solid chunks of colour as shading or highlight)
Tumblr media
1.5 Unless I want to focus on it as a stylsitic thing, it’s usually not necessary to draw strands as it can be a bit messy looking- ‘clumps’ are a good alternative
Tumblr media
2. Continuing with shape, the silhouette of the hair AND how it frames the face gives it a lot of personality. If you’re feeling stuck with ‘cartoony blob’ definitely look up different hairstyles, maybe sketch yourself a little index of styles and take note of whether they use curves, points, or hard edges
Tumblr media
2.5 Looking at lines of movement again, how your hair falls (or doesn’t) can make it look more natural. To figure these lines out I like to find whatever force is acting on the hair (gravity, space, water, hands) and draw down to that direction, splitting (like water) when it makes contact with the body or anything else.
Tumblr media
(of course like with any ‘rule’ you can try ignoring it or doing the exact opposite to get a more dense, gravity defying look)
3. When I shade hair I like to start with the darker sections then movie to lighter details. I only really add extras dishevelled strands or highlights right at the end when I have everything else figured out
Tumblr media
4. Lines again! For me this one goes for everything not just hair, but varying line width, line colour, having lines taper off into blur, or even lineless work instantly gives my pics more flavour (definitely think this ones helpful for changing the cartoony vibe)
Tumblr media
5. Different types of hair act differently, and I don’t mean only long and short, straight or curly. Straight hair can be silky and fall close to the person, or it can be frazzled and will fall straight out in an arc instead of down. Curls can sit in large ringlets or tiny coils. Conditions also dramatically change hair- wet hair plastered to the skull or swirling about underwater. Try drawing shapes around the head and filling them in with hair that fills it up
6.  I would definitely recommend life drawing hair or even tracing it from photos, it’ll really help you see and understand how it all falls, especially if you find curly hair confusing (in general life drawing, studies, and even looking at things and expanding your ‘visual library’ does wonders for your art)
Tumblr media
6.5 Also generally with curls I like to follow this pattern though, and placing them along my Lines of Movement where I think necessary
Tumblr media
‘Cartoony’ hair (particularly in tv shows) is usually defined by its solid outline and colour, no real details because thats a lot of work and the silhouette is whats important. So with your drawings, your hair can absolutely still be simple and not-the-focus, but you can certainly offer a bit more flavour :) no wrong answers
Hope this all makes sense and is helpful! Here are some other artist refs on hair that I’ve found helpful:

🖤 studyblr intro 🖤
oh hey, it’s Felix, your new favorite (*maybe*) nonbinary bookworm. after admiring studyblr for a couple years and determining my goals for the upcoming year (dear 2021, let’s get our shit together, maybe??), I thought it would be helpful for me to start my own studyblr.
about me
i go by Felix, which I stole from one of my favorite books of 2020, FELIX EVER AFTER by Kacen Callender, about a demi-boy
i am nonbinary/gender fluid and use they/them pronouns ONLY
I’m a librarian in real life, and am struggling to figure out what I might want to do with my life in the future and possibly go back to school for since most of the time I don’t enjoy my job
interests
music--I mostly listen to pop, honestly. I’m a huge swiftie (EVERMORE <3 <3 <3), think Lorde needs to come out with a new album, and can’t get enough of Miley Cyrus’ new album
journaling--I love to bullet journal and probably have too many trackers. this year I’m thinking of starting a reading journal as well, which may get some features on here
reading--I love to read! I used to read solely YA but I find I’m growing less interested in those books and want to expand my reading horizons in 2021.
academia
contemplating going back to school for
art history?
digital marketing
museum or archive studies
social justice
why a studyblr?
For many reasons, including
The pandemic has caused my library system to operate on an a/b team schedule, so I’m home every other week and professional development learning is now the biggest part of my job and I need some motivation to actually watch webinars and take courses
I want to document my explorations with experimenting with other genres while trying to figure out what type of books I like to read now
I want to explore other career options that I might like to pursue in the future and go back to school for
Honestly I’m super bored since the library isnt’ in person and taking some free courses would definitely be a good use of my time

Vertebrate Wings, PART 6: Details

Elbow Spines
I was admittedly a LOT more anal about elbow spines in the past. No way no how, I didn’t accept elbow spines in any way, shape, or form. Nowadays, I’m simply wary of elbow spines. I still believe whole-heartedly that a proper wing will have enough membrane stability and surface area all on its own, without the need for an elbow spine. BUT I can absolutely see the aesthetic charm in certain designs, and elbow spines can make sense if designed properly.
The interesting thing is that there ARE real-life “flying” animals with elbow spines—anomalures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I honestly wish I had skeletals to show off but I can’t find any, so if anyone has anomalure skeletal photos/diagrams I’d greatly appreciate it)
Technically these animals can’t “fly” but glide, much like the similar (but not necessarily related) flying squirrels, who also happen to have ‘spines’ at their wrists.
Tumblr media
Even the recently discovered Yi Qi could be used as comparison, with their highly-elongated wrist spines.
Tumblr media
Despite these real-life animals with wing spines supporting their membranes, there are still ways to do wing spines wrong, so keep these tips in mind if you want to add elbow spines to your creature’s membranous wings:
  1)      Animals with these spines are GLIDERS
The living animals with similar spines—flying squirrels and anomalures—are gliders, NOT powered flyers. IE—these animals don’t flap or otherwise move their arms/legs in very complicated motions; their limbs/spines are almost exclusively built to keep the membrane taut during gliding. While we can’t know of the Yi Qi’s specific style of flight at this point, I have reason to believe they were also gliders, not flyers. Again, I can’t prove this for certain, it’s just what I can reason out from what’s currently available about the species.
Either way, evidence points to the idea that these sorts of spines (at least supporting the main body of a membrane—yes I know about pteroids) are exclusively found on gliders, not powered flyers. This makes sense, given that spines don’t have joints, so they wouldn’t give membranes NEARLY the same flexibility and precision as fingers. But since gliders don’t necessarily need that kind of precision, this doesn’t hinder their “flight”.
Now, this fact on its own doesn’t negate the possibility of elbow spines on a powered flyer, but it is a cautionary reminder to take proper integration into account, which the following points will describe.
  2)      Spines are NOT fingers
Elbow spines are not endemic to arm structures—the structures wings evolved from. Thus, an elbow spine would have had to evolve into a wing design for the express purpose of membrane stability and/or widening the membrane surface area.
There is absolutely zero reason an elbow spine would have a claw, pad, or otherwise be implied to be a modified finger. Fingers are based exclusively on the hands (and feet, if you want to get technical), and would NOT migrate down to the elbows just to expand the wing membrane. Hell, even most of the ACTUAL fingers of bat wings don’t have any claws (besides the thumb of course) because claws on the tips of wing fingers are usually useless, since there’s no feasible way to use them for clinging, digging, or scratching purposes. Plus, claws/padding add unnecessary weight to the tips of the wing fingers, which SHOULD be the thinnest/lightest part of the wings, sans open membrane. Claws are only really useful on the shortest, front-facing fingers of bat wings.
However, I will acquiesce that jointed spines aren’t entirely unbelievable. I personally don’t know of any real-life animal with jointed spines, but I don’t think that joints would be necessarily exclusive to fingers. Unlike claws or pads, joints would provide a distinct purpose to the wing by allowing the spines more malleability and delicate control of the wing membrane shape.
  3)      Try not to interrupt the elbow joint
Again, I would appreciate an anomalure skeleton here in order to see exactly where the elbow spine attaches on the arm, but I guess we’ll have to wait on that.
Sans the anomalure (whose elbow structure is impossible to see under the fur), I don’t know of any cases of real-life animals with 3 different, independently-moving bones sharing the same joint (I’m not counting wrists/ankles here considering the specialty of the carpal/tarsal-based joints).
As it is now, I advise caution when placing the base of the spine at the elbow. It may certainly work, especially if the underlying bone/cartilage base of the spine “floats” a little ways away from the elbow itself, as can be seen in this EXCELLENT Dragon skeletal by Sammy Torres, yet again--
Tumblr media
But please, do NOT slot the elbow spine directly INTO the joint between the upper and lower arm.
Tumblr media
This would block the range of joint flexibility and important muscular connections between the upper and lower arm.
  4)      Try to form a paddle
As explained in the Membranes and Feathers section, a bird’s remiges are ONLY based in the bone of the lower arm and hand sections. This helps to form a more stable “paddle” out of these sections of the wing, while other feathers (tertials, axillaries) simply close the gap between the body and the remiges.
While feathers shouldn’t be conflated with membranes, I think in this instance they provide a decent reference for spine placement, since many birds are powered flyers. Thus, if the spine isn’t based at the elbow, I think basing the spine on the lower arm just past the elbow itself would work just fine.
Either way, definitely DON’T put a spine on the UPPER arm—it would just be useless. The membrane is already so close to the body on the upper arm (considering how short the upper arm typically is compared to the lower arm) that any extra stability or widening of the membrane isn’t going to do much good. Plus, it would be rather uncomfortable to fold a spine against the body on the upper arm.
Wrist Spikes
(Not to be confused with spines, which I use to refer to projections that support a membrane. See above sub-section for those)
This is yet another anatomical detail I was MUCH more anal about in the past, before learning that many real-life birds actually do have wrist spikes called wing spurs (and clubs, spikes, etc.).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some have even retained claws on the ends of their fingers.
Tumblr media
The claws are the easiest to understand—they’re retained from birds’ clawed ancestors. The spikes and spurs, however, are a bit novel to our human understanding of anatomy, as they can sprout from the metacarpals, carpals, or even the radius of the arm!
The takeaway here is that these spurs/clubs/etc. are used exclusively as weapons (whether against their own or other species). Thus, they are firmly based on an already-present bone (either the carpal, metacarpal, or radius), and don’t move independently. They don’t provide any help in clinging, nor can they fold up against the wing like bat thumbs.
(I highly recommend checking out Darren Naish’s articles on wing spurs if you want a much more in-depth analysis of wing spurs in different bird species)
Just keep the basic anatomy of the hand in mind if you add wrist spikes. For example, if your wing has a thumb, then you’d likely need to base the spike on the radius rather than the wrist bones, or else the spike would interfere with thumb movement. Also be careful not to interrupt the front-edge membrane when adding wrist spikes—wings still need that membrane to function, whether they’re being used for battle or not.
Palms
Now I know I said in the Basic Anatomy section that bats don’t have palms-- just wrists carpals and extra-long fingers. This is likely because of what I discussed in that section about proportions-- the longer bones forming bases of the fingers provide stability to the fingers, while the carpals simply hold all the fingers together at one point, allowing for rotation and flexibility. A proper palm may end up destabilizing the wing, since the base of the hand needs long-bone stability, but the bones of the palm would be shorter than the bases of the fingers.
However, this is merely a possibility-- while palms aren’t technically accurate to real-life bats, I don’t think they’re necessarily impossible, if designed right.
Namely, we need to keep in mind weight and shape.
The wing palm should NOT be too thick/wide relative to the wing arm, since the overall mass of the wing thins out across the arm, from shoulder to wrist. thus, if you slap a heavy palm on the end of the wing, it’ll throw off the whole balance of the wing.
Shape also affects the stability of the wing-- the leading edge of the palm may need thicker support against oncoming air currents, while the trailing edge might thin out some to help with aerodynamics.
So, we can assume that a humanoid palm would be too thick with padding, too large proportionally to the arm, and not shaped correctly for flight.
Instead, I would suggest a couple options.
You could slightly emphasize the wrist space the bases of the fingers share, making for a round, unobtrusive palm. Hell, you might even be able to argue the palm is *just* the carpals, depending on how you draw it-- it’s just a little wider than on bats.
Tumblr media
Or, you could lean into a longer, but more asymmetrical palm, with a thicker leading metacarpal, and the rest of the metacarpals shortening/thinning in progression.
Tumblr media
Just remember that with either design, the palm should still be fairly small compared to the arm.
Thumbs
When thumbs aren’t being used as a base for feathers like a bird’s alula, they’re usually used for clinging. As it turns out, clinging is more effective when the knuckle of the thumb rests against the object being clung to, thus this knuckle gets a lot more padding than the rest of the finger.
Tumblr media
This padding could even be compared to the paw pads of a cat or a dog, especially when the thumb is used as a resting point when bats are on the ground.
Tumblr media
While I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a sin to model a wing thumb after a human thumb, it does make more sense to model wing thumbs after bat thumbs so they can properly cling and support a membrane.

Amazing Recent Desires!
Evening
Its Ishida Ayumi
The Hello! Project concerts in Hiroshima
the 2nd day is over thank you very much
Tumblr media
I still have photos of the cake
The song I'm singing for this Harocon is,
ah,
I thought I'd talk about it but,
If you were still going to go to the concert, you may be like, I don't want to know it! right
Well then first, lets talk about fried momiji! lol
Thats right-- Today for the first time in my life I was able to eat my long-desire, fried momiji--
I've come to Hiroshima a lot, but I haven't eaten it.....
By the way fried momiji,
Do locals also eat them a lot?
......Sometimes I'll line up sakasama on the table <3
Ah, its been a while now I've wanted to eat fried hyoutan
When I went to the arcade with friends, I would eat it every time.....
With that, fried momiji,
Since I don't know when I'll be able to eat it again,
red bean, custard, cheese there were 3 flavors
I heard Fukumura-san recommending the cheese one
I wanted to eat it
But if its momiji manju, its red bean
I wanted to eat it
with that, I had 2 of them
there were a lot of members that bought 2 lol
It was delicous~
I see~
the slightly sweet dough was delicious also its unconditionally crunchy deliciousness fried food is a sin.........
This long-desired momiji,
I was so excited, I was in high-spirits,
In the back seat on the bullet train, I could hear BEYOOOOONDS Eguchi Saya-chan and Nishida Shiori-chan saying Ishia-san...I'm surprised...
I'm that person
is what I said lol
I'm a pretty playful person <3 lol
Tumblr media
Well then,
I'll write about my song!
So, those that don't want to know from here, see you ayumin <3
Thank you very much
I wont write the songs title! just talk about the atmosphere!
The song that I'm singing this time,
During practice, I was imagining what kind of world it was......
what came to mind was,
In a world with men and women involved, then it becomes a song that makes me sad,
changing it a little,
For parents, a world in which the child is standing on their own, its sad but, its like there will also be feelings of support
Always when I sing it, no matter what I end up trembling with nerves after all,
Perhaps that sadness is put in front.....
Thinking about it myself, so today for just a little bit,
I tried singing it in a way that would include some of the support being sent out, consciously, I sang it like that
This song, its easy to imagine the image of it from the lyrics, conversely expanding it is difficult, is it stereotyped? thats how it is huh
Its interesting to break it down
breaking down the stereotype, its really difficult though
From the stereotypes that are around myself......
that is, I think its already decided,
its hard to break that kind of thing
its not decided like, this is still the impression of it!
Its really interesting to watch the 3 in 15th generation change, I think its inspiring
I'll do my best
see you ayumin <3 https://ameblo.jp/morningmusume-10ki/entry-12615200393.html

Okay, I'll bite. How and why did you learn to code?
HI LIN thanks for biting this is a story that tells you quite a lot about me as a person
so some background: my parents are both in compsci. they're the late 80s, early 90s silicon valley crowd, they've both had their fair share of established companies and startup-hopping, and my brother and i grew up here
my brother is about 5 years older than me and took to coding like a fish to water (like a duck to water??) which is to say he started programming on scratch at the tender age of.... i don't even know, honestly, maybe 9? too young for me to really remember, and he's been a compsci prodigy ever since
but then. then there was me.
now i do love scratch. when i was little i always copied my brother (not in like a cute way, in a 'if he can do that i can do it too' mindset that meant my third grade teacher REALLY struggled to find book recommendations for me that i hadn't already read. since my brother was above his grade's reading level, and i would read whatever my brother read. yeah that's the kind of kid i was/am)
so naturally i did what he did. i programmed on scratch, i did advanced math courses, i was in CHESS CLUB (i am so bad at chess by the way. i am not good at it. let's establish that. i think i beat my dad once and i genuinely don't know if he let me win or not. i never beat my brother so in that respect i failed. but i'm better than my mom so there's that)
HOWEVER. around fourth or fifth grade i was like hey. maybe i want to like... forge my own identity. and not just turn my life into 'do whatever elder brother does BUT BETTER.'
and thus began my campaign to NEVER DO ANY CODING EVER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND WHILE I'M AT IT FUCK MATH
this gets long so there’s more under the cut sjflsghf
there are two problems with this. the first problem is my inherent pride and the fact that, despite my best efforts, i am actually decent at math and too proud to intentionally fuck it up. so i wound up in honors math. that made part 2 of my independence campaign a little difficult.
the second problem is that my parents were just as determined for me to learn to code as i was to avoid anything to do with coding for the rest of my life
(the third problem was actually a serious problem for this goal. and that was that in seventh grade, when i had a required compsci class where we learned basic, i found myself... enjoying it. HORROR OF HORRORS.)
so i was quite vocal about my anti-math stance and my determination to explore other avenues of life, to which my parents responded by listening with bat-ears whenever i talked about my compsci class and/or my love of spreadsheets so that they could jump on it and say 'YOU KNOW, COMPUTER PROGRAMMING IS JUST LIKE THAT, I THINK YOU WOULD REALLY ENJOY IT' whenever i said something remotely applicable
and to which i responded, of course, by plunging ever deeper into performing arts because fuck compsci, except when it's basic, because then i understand everything because of messing around w scratch when i was little and it's easy and i'm ahead of the rest of the class and can stare into space while the rest of them struggle with closing their parentheses (which is not to say i never messed up my parentheses. i totally did)
now, my brother, because he's a nerd, went to compsci summer camps where you'd spend a week or two learning some program or language. he did things like java and c++ and then would come home and use this knowledge for robotics club. like i said. nerd.
but my parents sensed a golden opportunity. namely, 'if we can get birl to go to these camps, she will actually learn programming things (not just being ahead of the class and spacing out in basic), and we'll probably get her to agree since it's only a week and she can do cost benefit analysis'
and, because i CAN do cost benefit analysis, i agreed to that deal. i'd go to a few of these camps, and then we'd agree that i was done with my parentally mandated computer science requirement. i learned some 3-d modeling, i learned to use unity (which involved some c+ as well), and i learned some java, and all was well. the camps were like 5 days long. we mostly worked on self-directed projects so i could do whatever the hell i wanted (and i made some pretty cool maze games if i do say so myself-- one of them in unity and one of them as a text-based game in java)
and.... horror of horrors....... i didn't hate it.
(of course i didn't want to go BACK any more than i had to but i also didn't hate every moment of those weeks)
so we were out of the woods right?
except no. we weren't.
because here's the thing. my high school ALSO had a computer science requirement. we had to take at least a semester. there were 3 levels offered: AP compsci, normal compsci, and then easy compsci (not its actual name) for the people who did not give a single shit
obviously i wanted to take the last one. my parents really wanted me to take AP but were willing to settle for normal. you will notice there was no overlap
i wrangled my way out of taking AP because that was a year-long course and i didn't have space in my schedule (my parents are wonderful in the sense that they didn't want to infringe on my actual interests to force me to do compsci which meant i had LEVERAGE)
but we literally wound up discussing it with the dean of students who was like 'well if you're capable of AP and just not taking it for schedule reasons then easy compsci would probably be boring for you!' which was an unhelpful take, thanks EVAN
but i did get my way by virtue of volunteering with a progressive tech organization in lieu of taking regular compsci, so i took easy compsci (in which i used scratch again, yay nostalgia, and also briefly flirted with html) and also wound up learning to use squarespace which is criminally easy but you can make it look like you're an expert
and all this while i was getting better and better with spreadsheets due to my own individual love for spreadsheets that near as i can tell, nobody in my family shares (my dad does have a lot of spreadsheets but his aren't as detailed as mine and he doesn't include data validation so HA)
all of which (plus my ap calc and stats classes) combines to mean that while i would not be able to just sit down and write you some code, if you give me access to stack overflow and tell me what language it's supposed to be in i can probably figure it out. especially now that i've become familiar with python by accident (well, more by my desire to write fic)
and because now i'm stuck in a rut, my current internship is with another civic tech company and that's probably what i'll wind up doing next summer as well. i don't actually work on software but i do comms which means i need to be able to have conversations with the engineers so i've been learning on the job. i know so much help
SO. with regards to my fic, my parents would both be thrilled because i taught myself some of a new programming language (python) and disappointed because i taught myself some of a new programming language with just stack overflow and some time and all i'm using it for is fic.
but near as i can tell we finished that battle long ago. it was a resounding victory for birl and i continue to expand my technical talents into areas like photo/video editing and CRM tools.
thank you very much *bows*
