#again a slap to keeley

it was incredibly frustrating to see keeley once again be the pacifier between roy and jamie. it's been three seasons and she's still having to deal with their jealously and conflict. like, why do the writers oppose her having healthy relationships romantically and platonically?

Hi! I’m such a huge fan of your Ted Lasso fics! I completely agree that there’s not enough Roy Kent fics out there. I was wondering if I could request a fic where Roy has feelings for the physiotherapist on the team and she has feelings for him too, and he’s all upset after his final game because he won’t be able to see her anymore and he’s worried she’s upset because he undid all her hard work rehabbing his knee, but it’s all sweet and yearning. I know that’s a lot so if it’s not your thing, absolutely no worries!
i've been meaning to get to this one, because i really like it!! and i just want to thank you for ur support because ur user pops up a lot in my notifs and i appreciate you so much <3 also i've made up roy's injury and keeley is with jamie in this ahaha | 2k words (!!), tw language, hurt/comfort
Roy is barely holding himself together.
He sinks down onto the bench in the dressing room and stares straight away, eyes burning. It's like his whole body is on fire and he knows if he held his hand in front of his face, it would be shaking. He doesn't try it, instead curls his hands into fists, clenching the bench below him.
He's fucked it.
His knee. His career. His life. It had been coming, he knew, but he still expected to have a year or two left in him. Some time to come to terms with his whole world coming crashing down around him. Instead he does one stupid fucking tackle on Jamie fucking Tartt and now he's done. Even the crowd had known it. The thought of them chanting for him brings back a lump in his throat.
He sees a shadow at the door and hangs his head. Knows the outline of you too well to pretend it's anyone else. You've come to shout at him, or slap him around the face, or maybe mock him. Whatever it is, he doesn't want to hear it.
You enter silently other than the door clicking shut behind you, but Roy doesn't look up to greet you. He keeps his eyes on the floor.
"I don't-" he clears his throat when his voice comes out all hoarse. All wrong, "I don't want to hear it. I fucked it, I know, and I don't want to fucking hear it."
You don't respond, instead walking further over to him and crouching down in front of him. He'd waved you away on the pitch, surprised that you'd let him stand up and walk off. He didn't look back at you when he did, knowing all he'd see would be disappointment.
You've got your physio bag, he notices, and you're unzipping it, rifling through the contents.
"There's no point. Get out, Y/N," he tries again, voice more desperate this time, "Please."
"Would you just shut the fuck up?" you say suddenly, louder than the quiet room deserved. You sigh, at yourself it seems, but Roy is frozen in place. He'd prepared himself for you to come and shout at him, but still hadn't expected you to really do it. You never shouted.
Still, he did as he was told, because he was too stunned to argue with you.
You get an icepack on his knee immediately, grumbling under your breath but he can't make out the words. There's some gel that you rub on too, and that eases some of the pain he's in, not that he can bring himself to say thank you. When you've properly secured the icepack to his knee, you finally look up at his face.
"You might have hurt yourself more by refusing that stretcher, you twat," you spit out, and he can see the anxiety swirling across your whole face, "Why do you have to be so..."
You trail off, scoffing to yourself without finishing your sentence as your gaze drops back down to his knee. Roy is tired and in pain and frustrated - all three of which were reasons for not wanting to have this conversation right now.
"Reckless? Fucking stupid? Old as shit? It's just what I fucking am, alright? I couldn't let that shit score, and now it's over. Fucking all of it."
He hears his voice get small towards the end. You're back looking at him and shaking your head before he's even finished.
"For the season, yeah. Then we get back to fucking work, Kent. We can start you on the slow stuff, rebuild the strength. I can assess whether you'll need an op-"
"Y/N."
"Don't," you say harshly, pointing up at him, but there's a break in your voice he doesn't know what to do with, "You're not done."
"We both know that it's my fucking ACL. Two years recovery time, more 'cause I'm fucking ancient. It's over."
He sees the tears in your eyes then. Fuck. One minute he thought you were unbearably angry with him, now you were on the verge of crying? He felt slow in a whole new way, unable to keep up with where this was going.
"You've worked so fucking hard," you grind out, "It can't just...if I'd done more on your knee the last few weeks maybe...We knew it was a problem. I could have-"
It hits him like a freight train when he realises all your anger is directed at yourself. That you're blaming yourself, not him. He gulps, watches you staring off in the direction of Ted's office as your tears fall.
You've worked together ceaselessly this season. He needs a lot of treatment in a lot of areas nowadays, not that he likes to admit it. You've been there every step of the way, poking and prodding and kneading out every knot, but also laughing. Eating the occasional breakfast when he comes in early for you to work on him.
He's not sure he's ever been this into someone before. Where it's crept up on him slowly and then washed over him all at once - about a month ago when Phoebe visited Richmond. Seeing you with her was like seeing some kind of future he never thought he'd have.
He still didn't think he'd have it. This injury was proof enough that good things didn't have a habit of coming his way. It was why he'd kept quiet about it ever since he realised rather than pouring his heart out to you.
"Hey," he says gruffly, completely out of his depth, "You're blaming yourself? I thought you were fucking livid with me."
Your eyes shoot back to his despite their bloodshot nature. Despite the situation, he watches as you giggle in disbelief.
"Angry with you? When has that ever fucking happened?" you say wetly, wiping at your face with rough fingertips, "I'm your physio, Roy, I'm meant to prevent this shit. And fix it. And now I can't fucking do either."
A fresh wave of tears bubbles up over your eyelids and travels down your face as you let out a sob. It's the first time he thinks about another side effect of his career ending - he'll have to leave Richmond. All the people he's come to love, despite really not wanting to. That would include you.
With an instinct he didn't know he had, he reached out to tug on your hand. You looked up at him in surprise, but he helps to pull you up with a small groan when you don't really let him take any of your weight. He guides you to sit next to him on the bench, so you do, sniffling uncontrollably.
"You've done a fucking lot for me these last few years. Especially this season. Don't fucking beat yourself up about this. I'm the one who made the stupid tackle."
"He was through on goal. You stopped him."
"And it might not make a fucking difference."
"It might," you try, crying slowing down as you switch into protective mode. He's seen you do it many times, but it never fails to bring warmth to his face, "Look, if I can't beat myself up, neither can you. Let's just blame the fucking universe, yeah?"
He considers it. Sounds like a good way to vent his frustration without falling into a spiral of self-hatred, but it might also get you to stop crying which is all he wants in the fucking world at this moment.
"Fine. Fuck the universe."
"Fuck the universe," you agree, bumping your shoulder lightly into his own, "Now would you start crying, please, so I'm not the only one embarrassing myself?"
Roy smiles despite himself at that, happy when he turns your way and sees you smiling too.
"I'm going to cry later, in the privacy of my fucking home," he says, wrapping an arm around you because it feels like both the right time and the right place, "Like a normal fucking person."
"Fuck you," you laugh, wiping your chin with the back of your hand. Roy spots a stray tear on your collarbone and reaches to smudge it away without thinking. You shuffle closer to him, his arm still around you, and put your own hand on his thigh.
Roy's brain short-circuits.
"I'll be leaving," he says, sudden even to himself, "Can't fucking stick around if I'm not playing."
"I know," you say softly, tucking your head into his shoulder. He can't let his own head rest against yours, because he knows he'd get too comfortable. Knows he'd never want to move again.
He takes a moment. He knows what he wants to say, he's just not sure he can.
"I don't want to fucking leave," he gets out through gritted teeth, but he's left out the most important word.
You. I don't want to fucking leave you.
It's stuck in his throat as he peers down at the top of your head, still resting on him. He kicks himself inwardly when he can't get the extra word out before you start talking, index finger tracing gentle patterns just above his knee.
"Yeah, I don't want you to fucking leave either," you say, as if you're admitting something terrible. He can tell you're watching the movement of your own hand to avoid looking up at him. "You won't stick around, join the coaching staff?"
"Fuck no," he barks out, feeling you chuckle against his side, "I couldn't do that shit."
"You could," you insist, "But it's okay if you don't want to. I just thought maybe I could look after you if you did."
He tries to move away from you to look at your face with a smirk, but you stay rooted to the spot and stop drawing your patterns on his leg abruptly.
"Your knee! I meant look after your fucking knee, Jesus."
It's now or never. He's so sick of never saying what he fucking means around you, but if he can't do that, he'll settle for the next best thing.
"Do you make house calls?"
It's the worst line he's ever used. But you're here rather than watching the end of the match, and your head is on his shoulder, hand on his thigh. He wonders if maybe, his luck might be balancing out, if maybe you'll understand what he's trying and failing to say.
"Huh?"
He stifles his own chuckle at the confusion in your voice. Willing himself to just fucking do something, he takes your hand from his knee and holds it in his own, clasping on tightly. There's a spike in his heart rate when you grip his hand right back.
"I'm asking-" he begins, hoping you can't hear his heartbeat, "-if you do house calls. To look after my knee, and shit. Once I'm gone."
"Oh."
You've definitely understood his meaning. In past months, he'd be tearing his hair out over trying to read between the lines, probably taking it out on Ted or Jamie or Isaac or whoever was nearby to be shouted at. Now he's positive, as you cling to his hand, that you know what he's trying to say.
Even if he's not sure of your reaction yet, there's already a weight lifted from his chest. And whatever that fucking gel you put on his knee was, he hasn't felt the pain in it since.
"As a club physio, no," you answer slowly, but he knows that's not the end of your sentence, "No house calls. Also no going into the dressing room during a match, no putting numbing cream on an injury just cause you don't want a player in pain, no holding a player's hand."
He's grinning now. Maybe because you can't actually see him doing it, but then he locks in on something you've said amongst the floating feeling that's taken over his body.
"Wait, you put fucking numbing cream on me?"
"You're welcome," you retort, "My point is that I've clearly broken a few rules for you already. So, house calls it is. For the sake of your knee."
He squeezes your hand.
"For the sake of my fucking knee, yeah."
And because it doesn't feel so scary anymore, he puts his head on top of your own and reminds himself that he was going to cry later, not now. For now, with your hand lodged tightly in his own, he decides to think about that future he didn't think he'd ever get, instead.

tw domestic abuse
13 year old Jamie flinching when his dad puts his hand on his shoulder because the force of it makes him bend.
17 year old Jamie having a black eye for two weeks after his dads been around again and insisting he got it during a match and the ref just didn’t see.
19 year old Jamie in a serious relationship for the first time and she drags her nails down his arm hard enough to break skin in a small argument. She smacks his face three days later.
20 year old Jamie who’s just had a wine glass tossed at his head from a girl who thought he was cheating, he wasn’t but that doesn’t seem to matter.
21 year old Jamie who had a secret boyfriend for three months until he gets shoved into a wall for not wanting to be the first out player because ‘Jamie think of both our careers, we would be icons’.
23 year old Jamie who’s had maybe the healthiest relationship of his life with Keeley being at a bar for the first time after they break up, he gets his face slapped by a girl who thinks he was flirting with her boyfriend.
27 year old Jamie in a relationship with Roy and the first time they really argue he throws his hands in front of himself and closes his eyes when Roy gestures.
Roy fully freezes and steps four feet back and asks Jamie to open his eyes. Jamie who honestly didn’t realize his eyes were closed looks shocked. He asks Roy why he’s so far away now.
Roy looks like he’s about to cry, Jamie lunges to him holding his face asking what happened. Roy has to stutter out a ‘you flinched’ and now it’s Jamie’s turn to freeze. No one has ever brought up the flinching before, taken advantage of it? Yeah. Ignored it? Definitely. Asked in a voice that’s about to cry? No, no that’s new.
He insists he’s fine, he knows Roy would never hit him. Roy looks at him like he’s lost his mind and refuses to brush this off. They talk for hours, Jamie tells Roy everything. All the ex’s, everything his father has ever done, ex teammates who slapped backs too hard to be friendly.
Everything.
By the end they are both crying and Jamie has agreed to talk to a therapist. When they go to bed that night Roy is terrified to grab onto Jamie and pull him on top like he normally does. Jamie has no such issues and rolls right on top of Roy, head tucked into Roy’s neck like every night.

roy kent at his wedding! obviously he’ll do the first dance but do we think afterwards he’d end up partying and dancing to the wedding playlist with his wife? does he cry when she walks down the aisle? I need all of the thoughts xx
Roy wasn't at all nervous when it came to your wedding. He didn't care if he tripped or something went wrong. All he cared about was marrying you, making you Mrs. Kent.
He watches as the wedding party do the processional. Then, the wedding march began to play. Everyone stands and it was now your entrance.
You appear at the end of the aisle, your arm looped around Ted, your father figure and man who brought you and Roy together.
You look absolutely beautiful. The way your dress just makes you even more gorgeous and angelic looking. Roy can't believe it. He wipes at his eyes, trying to not let any tears fall.
"I gotchu, grandad," Jamie, his best man, pulls out a handkerchief and offers it to Roy.
Roy slaps it away and grumbles, "Fuck off." He looks back at you and sees you giggling and shaking your head. Love and tears in your eyes.
When you get to the other end of the aisle, you give Ted a hug and place your hand in Roy's outstretched one. You hand Keeley your bouquet and place your other hand in Roy's.
He squeezes your hands gently, "I love you," he rasps.
"I love you too," you say beaming, and you look to Coach Beard, your officiant, to start.
_________________
Roy wasn't much of a dancer, especially after he messed up his knee. However, he did indulge you in the first dance, holding you close and swaying you to the music.
He participated in a few dances here and there, but he mainly sat on the side watching you have fun with your family and friends. You were jumping around and having fun, dancing with Keeley and Rebecca. Your smile is so wide and Roy felt that feeling in his chest again, the one he felt when he realized he was in love with you. His body feeling warm all over.
He downs the rest of his beer and stands up with a grunt. He makes his way over to you and your smile seems to grow bigger when he joins you.
You sing along to the song playing and he twirls you around, the lovesick smile on his face.
He can't wait to spend forever with you.

giggling and blushing cause im thinking about sitting on Ted’s lap
Mmmm. It's so cute. He's got such a sittable lap. I'm gonna take this a couple directions so hopefully it makes you giggle more. Let's goooo!
---
Relationship: Ted Lasso x reader
Warnings: Light, light smut/teasing
---
Nate offered to drive you all home after the pub, but given that Nate's car is very small -- since he sold his fancy schmancy sports car -- you didn't have a lot of space to go.
"You may need to choose a lap," Beard says, looking at your face as you scan the options. Ted is closest to the open door.
"Hop on," Ted says, slapping his thighs.
Your dress is riding up your thighs a little when you take a seat, his chest against your back. A speed bump in the road and an urgent "Sorry!" from Nate meant you almost hit your head on the roof of his tiny car, your butt landing right over Ted's...
"Ooooof," Ted sighs, his hand instinctively going to your waist.
"You OK there darlin'?" he whispers, making you blush. You smile and nod. Beard rolls his eyes.
You and Ted have been flirting for a while now. Nothing official has happened. But everyone around you can see it. It's palpable.
When Nate swerves to avoid, ironically, a rude sports car that cuts into his lane, your hand grips Ted's thigh and his big hand is back around you, his arm roped a little more around your middle.
"Sorry," you murmur behind you, but Ted blushes and shakes his head. 't's alright," he answers quietly.
Nate drops you off first, and you hop out of the car. Ted walks you to your door.
"Until next carpool," he jokes, heading down your steps and waving goodbye. Your heart skips as you close the door to your flat.
...
Your second time on Ted's lap was a total accident.
You were riding with the team to an away game at the insistence of Rebecca and Keeley, who were coming along to make it a girl's weekend.
You were up getting something from your bag in the overhead when the bus lurched and caused you to tumble backward. You almost gripped the handrail, and when you missed that, went for the back of the seat behind you, softening the blow of your ass and landing on Ted Lasso's thighs.
"Well hello again, this is familiar," Ted smiles, his hand on your back. "You OK?"
You nod, blushing hard. "Yeah, Coach, sorry about that..."
He smiles and leans closer, Beard asleep next to him.
"I don't mind a bit," he whispers, raising an eyebrow at you. Before you pass out from a racing heart, you pop back up and return to your seat.
...
The third time on Ted's lap, you were on his couch. His hands on your back, yours against his broad chest. Your lips exploring each other.
Ted Lasso is a really, really good kisser.
In the past two weeks, your flirting turned into a couple of dinner dates. Then a game night at your flat, where he lingered behind and you confessed how you felt in the kitchen.
Now you're goin' steady with Ted.
But tonight's movie night was a rom-com and it was OK to start, but you leaned against his chest, and then you kissed, and then before you knew it, you were sitting on his lap, your hands unable to keep off each other.
"I like when you're on my lap like this, darlin'," he murmurs as his lips move down your neck.
"Yeah?"
"Mmm-hmm," he admits, his hands on your waist, stroking your curves. "The first time you sat on my lap, I thought I was gonna explode."
You giggle and blush.
"I loved sitting on your lap in that cramped little car," you whisper, your eyes closed as his lips kiss and suck on your neck. He brings you back to his view.
"How do you feel about this?" he asks, his voice low and husky.
Your hips grind against him, making his breath hitch and eyes darken.
"I think this seat is my favorite."
---
*fans self* Cute n' spicy. Who doesn't love that on a Friday? This was a lot of fun. Ted is so cozy -- he'd be so cute to sit on but ooooh, facing him? HOT. HOT. Thanks for the prompt, friend!

Angst Prompts: Roy/Jamie
Prompt by @novelbear *Their full list here*
when you want to introduce them to someone but you have that slight hesitation before saying "they're a friend."
"you called me your friend." "was i not supposed to say that?" "you really think i'm just your friend? after these last few weeks?"
A/N: usually I write flirty, sexy, happy RoyJamie but I feel like shit so you're getting sad prompts today. (Ficlet under cut)
Tumblr media
“This is Jamie, my …friend.”
Friend, friend. It feels like a slap in the face, because it is. Because Jamie is not going back in the closet for anyone.
Not for Man City. Not for Love Island. Not for his fucking father. And sure as hell not for Roy fucking Kent who Jamie had been considering, exclusively for weeks now, as his boyfriend.
“Yeah. Hey, how you doing mate,” Jamie says diplomatically, through clenched fucking teeth as he shakes the hand of some old fuck Jamie could care less about.
*
He’s fully trapped in his head by the time they reach the restaurant.
“You’ve been quiet.” Roy says, and Jamie struggles to make eye contact.
“Have I?”
“Eerily. Usually can't get you to shut the fuck up.”
Any other day, in any other mood, the comment would have rolled off Jamie’s back. Roy and Jamie teased each other constantly. But right now, after the ‘friend’ comment. After so much time listening to the hateful insecurities whispering venom in his ears, it just feels like a kick to the gut after he’s already down.
“Fuck you Roy,” he says, louder than is polite for a half full restaurant, but it at least the message gets through. Because Roy’s eyebrows shoot to his receding hairline and his mouth drops open in shock.
“Whoa, hey. The fuck’s going on?”
Jamie scoffs, pushing his hair back for something to do that's not destruct.
“The fucks goin on? You called me your ‘friend’ Roy. To someone important to you. Is that all this is? All we are? It’s been months Roy!”
Roy is stunned, embarrassed, and angry. Jamie’s spent enough time looking at this assholes face to understand the nuances in his expressions.
“I don't want to talk about this here,” Roy says, probably thinking he's compromising but it just sets Jamie off. He stands and leaves the restaurant without another word.
*
Roy stares at the empty place across from him for another second before tossing cash on the table for the drinks and getting the fuck out of here. He can already hear all of the chatter in the restaurant escalate as more seconds pass.
He needed to talk to someone. Jamie, ideally, but maybe after he’s cooled down a bit.
He wished Keeley wasn’t the first person that jumped to his mind. Only because it wasn't fair to burden her with news of a second failed relationship after he was the one who ended theirs.
“Fuuuuuuuuuuuucccck.”
*
Jamie goes home. And he drinks. He hates himself for it, but, well, he’s already at the bottom of the well, can’t get any lower than this right?
*
He loses track of time, and how much he’s drank. Of how many pictures he's taken of his body and dick as revenge postings to maybe piss Roy off more. They don't go any further than his camera roll though, because the liquor makes his eyes heavy and he’s asleep less than 5 minutes later.
*
Waking up alone is one of the worst feelings in the world in Jamie’s opinion. Especially once he's in a relationship. And now, after 5 months and 16 days, he’s grown accustomed to waking up against Roy’s frame. To falling asleep with his light snoring in his ear.
Waking up alone, hungover, because your actions may have ended yet another fantastic relationship? Take the worst feeling in the world and compound it by 100.
Jamie isn't getting out of bed today. Maybe not even this week. Maybe he’ll quit the team all together. It would save him the embarrassing feeling of seeing Roy everyday. Of explaining to everyone how they went from best friends to enemies again over night.
He thinks about calling his mom. But then he remembered she and Simon were out on holiday till the 19th.
The last of his hope for a good day is dashed.

if requests are open, can i request jamie having a lightbulb moment realizing he’s into a male reader who’s very obviously shy/in love with jamie please? it doesn’t have to be that he realizes he likes guys but it could be? if you’re uncomfortable writing mlm relationships you can completely ignore this! no pressure ^_^ thank you!!
thank you for this! i've been itching to write jamie x m!reader! i hope you enjoy <3
"Don't get it, bruv," Isaac grumbles. "You buy 'em flowers, you take them to dinner, and they still won't get the hint. Women are fuckin' complicated."
"Men aren't exactly a walk in the park, are they?" Colin grumbles, his arm around Michael as his boyfriend presses a smiling kiss to his cheek, already familiar with this story. "This guy here spent months, months! Taking me out on dates before I realized we were dating."
"That might just be a you thing, hermano," Dani snickers, the guys laughing with him. "But I agree with Isaac. I always do the same when I have a crush on a girl: I make her a playlist of Mexican baladas and cook recipes from scratch. They never get the hint."
"Open communication is sexy," Michael pipes up behind his beer and murmurs of agreement fill the restaurant.
It's late, close to midnight, but Sam's always lenient enough to lend them the space for as long as they want. Everyone shares their own techniques of conquest: Rich gives them an expensive wine from his personal collection, Van Damme writes them notes about every little thing and leaves them scattered where they can find them, Jan Maas starts reading up on Dutch poetry.
At some point it's Jamie's turn to share, and he shifts a little in his seat at the sudden attention.
"Um, well," he stutters, playing with his napkin and ripping it into small pieces nervously. "I get touchy, I guess? Like, not in a creepy way, I just. More casual contact, you know? Like I'm drawn to them. And I laugh. I laugh a lot. Everything is funny, all of a sudden."
"That's everyone with a crush, though," Colin reasons. "There's gotta be something specific, no? Michael started wearing funny socks when we were dating, for some reason."
His boyfriend pipes up in offense, cheeks coloring. He says something about Colin listening to Britney Spears and binging The Kardashians when in love, which, for some weird ass reason makes sense.
Still, the momentary lapse in conversation isn't enough for the attention to slip off him, and Jamie keeps being badgered for information until he cracks. "Alright, alright! I guess I. I don't know, I. You know how I hate sharing my food. I guess I don't mind much when I'm... you know. In love and shit."
Finally, that's enough for the guys to move on to their next victim, but Jamie's thoughts stay stranded on his own answer. How did he know? He used to share plates with Keeley when they were dating, though his jaw would always clench a little in annoyance whenever she dipped in her fork without asking. It was a sanitary thing, really.
No, it was (Y/N) who sneaked into his mind when he said that. But that's different, ain't it? They've been friends forever, and it's different with guys, right? So what if Jamie doesn't care when he steals some of his chips or when he steals half of his sandwich when they're lazing around at his place? It doesn't have to mean anything.
But less than fifteen minutes ago he'd slapped Moe's hand away when he reached for chin chin out of Jamie's plate. And, like, Moe's his mate, Jamie would go to war for Moe, but still. Still.
"Shit," Jamie says softly to himself, the puzzle pieces inside his brain slipping into place. Again, a little louder. "Shit."
"What's wrong with you?" Isaac nudges his shoulder, quietly, thank God. Jamie can't bear to invite his entire team into his sudden romantic realization.
"Nothin', nothin'," he thinks about afternoons spent with (Y/N) in comfortable silence when everything else in the world was wrong; his mind too mean, the fans too opinionated, his efforts on the pitch not good enough. Fuck, Jamie has been a proper dumbass, hasn't he? "Just- I gotta go. There's somethin' I need to do."
He says his quick goodbyes and pokes his tongue out playfully when it gets a bunch of boos and disappointed whines from the guys. The cold Richmond air hits him full in the face as he leaves Ola's, brows furrowed as he texts.
hey u still up?
Jamie bites his lip as a response comes through seconds later.
yeah? Thought you were out w the boys tonight
His fingers hesitate before pressing down on the screen, fear be damned.
just left
any chance i can come over?
(Y/N)'s texts are quick, casual.
Of course. always
Everything okay?
Against all odds, Jamie smiles. He has a growing suspicion the night might turn out better than he ever hoped.
alls brilliant
ill be there in 20

Oh, look, more Ted Lasso 3.1 thoughts
So many. Let's go to the bullet points:
Rebecca thinking she's fine about the whole Rupert and Nate thing and clearly NOT being okay with it to the point of wanting Ted to be an asshole in response to Nate, but then, when Ted is Ted, Rebecca's realization comes from Keeley PRAISING her for a decision she didn't even make. But Rebecca realizing through Keeley's genuine praise (because Keeley wasn't there) that the best decision is to let Ted be Ted was just a really great, layered Rebecca moment.
Keeley's office doesn't look like Keeley. The neon sign does. Her wardrobe does. Those people in that office? The couch furniture in her own office? None of that is Keeley. That is Keeley thinking this is what it looks like to go into corporate PR with investor money. I look forward to watching furry pillows and glittery accessories take over the office as Keeley finds her confidence in a different phase of her career.
We all fucking know Roy is the one who decided they needed a break, and Roy, you fucking walnut. I get it. I look forward to the story of it. But the story is Keeley saying, "If I put this off again," and trying to comfort Roy, and Phoebe, smart nugget that she is, knowing stupid when she sees it. Keeley has agreed to this break up because Roy thinks it's needed, and she has no doubt spent a lot of time trying to talk him out of it. They deserve each other wholly, and I can't wait for Roy to get slapped in the face with that.
The himbos are doing great. So proud of all of them. But, yes, especially Jamie but also Richard making clear that a fine wine is not an expensive wine. But also also, all of our boys.
I love you, Jan Mass. You keep up being Dutch, kiddo.
Beard being proud of Ted for learning soccer shit and also knowing how long to wait before getting back on the bus with a toad venom-addled driver is just the perfect dichotomy of Beard.
I have a lot of thoughts about Ted's actual relationship with Henry (clearly positive and happy and healthy) and what he thinks the relationship is (distant and unhappy because he's not physically there), but if I go down that road, I'm never coming back. In short, I hope that part of Ted's journey this season is realizing he is a great fucking father and that physical distance doesn't change that.
Ted calling Sharon for a clearly planned session right after dropping off Henry? That is fucking PROGRESS my friends. And not just that, but also he doesn't question Sharon setting time boundaries OR setting personal boundaries.
I LOVE that Sharon allows him to ask personal questions because the personal connection is absolutely what Ted needs. And I love that she refuses to give him clear answers and doesn't rise to the bait he tries to set out with 'You usually say no'. The way he asks the team and the sport then asks the number of Australians, then guesses rugby, and Sharon confirms NOTHING? That's top-tier therapist shit. And we all knew she was that good, but now Ted clearly knows it too and TRUSTS it, more importantly.
I didn't notice until gif sets, but they named the stadium after Earl. Which. Shut up.
Higgins having matching Keeley mascara on his shirt makes me SO HAPPY. Because it tells you without showing you that Higgins and Keeley are still close and caring about each other. And Rebecca and Higgins having a moment about it is so NICE. Just NICE. It's fucking NICE.
I mentioned Sharon's boytoy in another post, but I want to repeat it because 1) she deserves it, and 2) he shows he deserves HER because he's wearing headphones while she talks to a client, and he doesn't take them off until after she walks in the room, clearly off the phone. He respects her as a professional. This is very important and excellent.
I am going to find Rupert and kick him in the balls as many times as I can in one minute, then I'm going to take a five minute breather and start again.
The isolation of Nate at West Ham (alone on the escalator; not answering to a polite hello; standing far away from his co-coach on the field; working far away from the locker room) is intentionally uncomfortable for us as an audience. We're used to a very collaborative coach in a close-knit environment. But that's not Nate's story. Nate's story is one of thinking isolation and arrogance will save him from his worst self-fears. We all know that shouldn't be his goal, but it isn't about how WE know he's wrong. It's about NATE figuring out he's doing it wrong.
There is no fucking way Rupert didn't know it was Nate's car when he towed it. New guy. New car in the fancy lot. Does he ask, though? No. That would be healthy. Instead, he sets it up so Nate can see he's disappointed in him without him saying it (a common abuse tactic), and then lovebombing him with a new car as a way to tighten his control (another common abuse tactic). He also encouraged Nate's worst tendencies to build a sense of safety that isn't actually there because Rupert will absolutely use those same groomed instincts at a later date against Nate (more abuse tactics).
I hope Rupert gets him by a team bus is what I'm saying. And I want Nate to be driving it and do it on purpose, frankly.
I don't want it to be Rebecca only because she's beyond that point of her anger. But I def want her to be a character witness for Nate.
I want Ted to stay in England. He's talking a lot about how he doesn't know why he is where he is or doing what he's doing. And I know a lot of people hope he goes back to Kansas. But that's not my hope. My hope is that Ted will realize he's doing great stuff with these boys and that he's a great dad even with physical distance, and he finds a new love and appreciation for himself that is directly connected to making this huge, confusing, and messy leap to go to England.
You can do something dumb (run to England to escape your failing marriage) and learn that while your instincts may have been dumb, the overall result is positive and good for you.
Which, also, could be Nate's arc this season. He made several dumb decisions about being a source and going to West Ham, but the end result could be, "Oh, shit, I don't want to be this shitty person." and then he can grow and change on a similar but different path to Ted.
Okay, that's enough. That's very long. I get a lot of feels.

well. that was an episode of something alright.
no but truly whatever is happening is so fucking disappointing wrt the emotional journey and catharsis for these characters, and honestly i feel condescended to as an audience member and as a football fan. you can't just slap an isolated didactic speech over a heart tugging score and call it story telling, you can't take an 11th hour 180 turn while ignoring the characters for 10 episodes and call it character development, and you can't take a story of mass working-class fan protests against club owner greed and give it to a rich white lady as her slay girlboss story without it being actually gross.
sorry but this was 63 minutes...of what exactly?? just going through the story lines in some kind of vague order of least to most consequential for sam, keeley, roy, rebecca, and nate and this gets long so under the cut it goes:
sam - what was this supposed to even be? ok so you bring back edwin akufo for the superleague story (which by the way, changing this to the akufo league instead of the story's inspiration the european super league - which was proposed by white european billionaires - is some level of racism i can't even...) to do what? get some laughs in by retreading the grudge? putting sam through the ringer again for...??? what was the end result here? like i'm genuinely asking bc i don't understand what i'm supposed to get from his being all smiley and putting the nigerian national team photo in his locker? he's happy because jamie gave him a shout out and that's good enough for him? what the fuck is this even supposed to mean?
keeley - what was the purpose of any of this genuinely. the amount of time we spent with kjpr and i have no idea what keeley does, if she's good at her job, how she's built her relationships with her silent co-workers. when she was at richmond we got to see her in action and her stories brought out not only her own character but other characters we cared about. keeley has been utterly passive this season - her biggest moment of agency was hiring shandy and that was exploded and scrubbed from the narrative. everything else from jack to the leak to being defunded just happened to her and she cried about it. and now rebecca's swooping in to refund her again and genuinely what is even happening here? the conflict for her character that was set up last year was that she was experiencing success in a completely new way and she was scared she wasn't going to live up to it and the conflict between the work she felt she needed to do to live up to expectations and how that would affect other relationships in her life, especially that with roy. how was that addressed? at all? we've seen her nebulously stressed, we've been told she's working a lot without being allowed to experience what she's doing, we've seen her try and emulate both ted and rebecca without success, and what? what else? a couple of looks between her and roy? her getting picked up and put down by a vc funder both financially and personally? what kind of synthesis has she reached here???
roy - which brings us to roy. we get the 'i'm talking about my football career but actually i'm talking about my relationship with keeley' in the chelsea episode which was great because it set up a conflict for roy this season - the idea that he cuts and runs to put distance between himself and moments of vulnerability to avoid possible failure and as a result never truly engages and enjoys experiences or people in the moment. great brilliant amazing love it -- what the fuck happened. i feel like you can vaguely connect something about how his training jamie is teaching jamie not to do what he did - to actually give his emotional all to his development as a footballer instead of detaching when things were at there most frustrating with zava there. that where roy used his anger and gruffness as a mask, jamie was using his cockiness but both to the same end of detaching from a situation they felt was out of their control. but i feel like i'm carrying a lot of water with all that, and while yes there have been moments of roy being more open this season, he's for a lot of it been relegated to weird comic relief if you can even call it that? (sorry but the rope monologue and the dick string training are both fucked up and weird and went on for way too long). he pulled a ted at the press conference (and told someone else's miscarriage story hmm)? he and keeley have been kept apart for the entirety of this season so like....i don't know? what was this? a fake holiday to wedge in a scene with his sister, phoebe and jamie? an epiphany that he was a mess? that he caused damage? and he writes a letter and now everything's good roykeeley back on track? the fact that they were kept apart for the majority of the season just feels like.......was any of this actually sorted through? did we experience either of these characters interact in any way where they challenged each other in this journey? that lead up to this reconciliation? this culmination feels so unearned.
rebecca - and speaking of unearned, the entire set-up for her arc of getting the fuck over rupert and finding joy in the team without it being about someone else was there. from her rashness in swooping zava from under rupert's nose, to her yelling at ted about winning, the 'him-you-mean-them' conversation, her maniacal behaviour at half-time during the west ham game. but where was the move out of this? she met a guy on a boat? she..........what??? how have we seen her grow out of this moment? what have we seen besides this deus ex machina of....what? remembering a story about rupert's childhood and bing bang boom - oh he was just a child once too? and the end, job's a good'un? fast forwarding through the total football catharsis short-shrifted rebecca, too. if the football is the expository tool to reveal things about our characters, the idea that a strategy that puts a singular thing at the focus to the detriment of everything else is bad for football and it's bad for people is a great narrative device. but...just as we're being told and not shown that it's working on the field, we're getting the same treatment off. rebecca is realising that the community both in and around the club is more fulfilling than a psychic's quote unquote predictions and using the club as a tool for narrow-focused spite -- ok show that??? show her reactions to the fans attending training. show other small moments where she enjoys the game? puts the club above embarrassing rupert at all costs? that moment with higgins talking about possibly firing ted bc of the winless streak could have been a glimpse of that but it was thrown away instead (but to be honest, how much of that is a retreading of her journey in s1?). so what do we get instead - girlbossery with, i'm sorry, a really fucking beyond heavy-handed moment with seeing her young self in the mirror? that does what? tells us that she's able to stand firm in a room full of men? did we...not know that? that she realises she's in it bc she loves the game? does she?? again, by not seeing the moments of total football triumph, we missed out on the opportunity to show her falling in love with the sport and becoming a true fan, not just an owner. if that's even what i'm supposed to be getting from this!!?? not to mention that her big moment of realising passion for the beautiful game was more important than her spite was directly ripped from the headlines but completely twisted. as i mentioned before, in april 2021 a bunch of white european billionaire club owners did indeed try to form a european super league out of a closed group of 12 of the richest european clubs, but clear cash grab wasn't stopped by a rich white lady having a moment of #selflove and altruistic benevolence, it was stopped by a mass protest of working-class fans pointing out the clear capitalist greed of the move:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
nate - and god if all of this isn't just a slap in the face to nate's character arc. again, the set up of the first two seasons was clear and great! nate's struggle with self-worth especially rooted in his inability to live up to his father's expectations; his being bullied and undervalued and then clinging to someone who was giving him the affirmations he was craving, his projecting those unresolved issues onto ted who both couldn't live up to those expectations, and who made his own mistakes as he struggled through his own personal turmoil and mental health issues. the way all of those unresolved issues and referred anger came to a head for the both of them in nate's exposing ted's panic attacks to try and hurt him the way he felt hurt. and then falling into the arms of someone who was ready to exploit nate's talent and insecurity for his own gains. it's so good! it's so fucking good that it's bananas that we barely get to see any of his reconcilation play out! we get the beginning with rupert's emotional manipulation on display...and then what? nate is sidelined for the majority of the season! he's absent in some episodes altogether! HE QUITS HIS JOB OFF SCREEN AND WE GET NONE OF HIS INNER THOUGHTS AS TO WHY EXACTLY AND WE'RE LEFT TO DO THE WORK OF FILLING IN THE BLANKS??? we get that tell-not-show moment with his family with his dad's map, but like then there's no significant interaction between nate and his father until this episode? we get most of nate's personal development through his relationship with jade instead of diving into his relationship with his parents and teasing that out to build up to the emotional cathartic moment in this episode? there's so much untapped complexity in nate's arc! that tension with his parents, how the pressures both his father as an immigrant and himself as first gen are amplified by the pressures of rigid masculinity. how his father felt the need to stifle that creative sweetness in himself to make sure nate succeeded and had the best opportunity because of the combined pressures of race, class, masculinity, and feeling out of his depths when faced with his son's brilliance. nate's conflict between expressing his own softness and creativity v his feelings of the expectations of masculinity and success. so much of that could have been drawn out instead of sidelined and then infodumped and concluded in a few minutes of one episode! look! nate plays the violin aren't you feeling emotions? so many minutes of nate laying in bed and so few of the exploration of his and his father's dynamic that was set up to be the hingepoint of his frustration, insecurity and anger that manifested in his ruptured relationship with ted and richmond! and it's back to the total football -- that jade is part of his development isn't a bad thing! showing nate as becoming fulfilled both familially and romantically is actually good, esp for a character of colour! the idea that a healthy life is a full life with many different elements of one's community playing in tandem and concert to build towards a fulfillment and joy! but like...ok??? do so that???? and not all in one moment with All The Right Words At The Same Time???? what the fuck man this feels so fucking surface level and i just with the sheer amount of minutes given to episodes this season, what the fuck were they spent on if not this???
i'm sorry, but epiphany moments like the four (four!!!) in this episode work in romcom movies because we have 90 minutes with the characters. we accept certain shorthand for character growth because we understand the constraints of the narrative framework. it's bananas and fucking lazy to think that's OK for a serial format, especially one that's ballooned in time over the past season! what the fuck have those minutes been used for except for apparently spinning the fucking wheels on all of these development arcs until the last saccharine moment? aren't you crying with emotions, hmmmm?????
none of this feels earned and i feel genuinely gross at being thrown a few Emotionally Coded scenes and being expected to have my little heartstrings pulled enough that the squandered and self-indulgent mess of this season - that threw all of this character development into the trash - doesn't matter. we've spent years with these characters, the first two seasons carefully set up deep conflicts that should have been given careful and deep resolutions.
instead this episode gives us a naked ass and insists that it's clothed in glorious tie dye.
it's a naked fucking ass. and whatever patchwork loincloth the last two episodes whip up, it can't make up for the wasted potential, laziness and self-indulgent disaster of jason sudeikis's showrunning.

ted lasso 3x02 thoughts
Listen, I think we can all agree that this episode could pretty much be titled ‘Trent Crimm: Return of the Crimm’. I’m not even a big tedpendent girl but this was definitely their time.
I loved seeing Trent back at Richmond! It’s going to be great having more of James Lance on the show: one thing I did think was that Trent had definitely lost a little bit of his customary swagger – he’s back at Richmond but he’s no longer dominating the press room, he’s very much now in the jock-dominated locker room where the Roy storyline made it clear that he no longer has that commanding power that he did in the world of journalism (James Lance’s headcanon that Trent got into sports journalism because his dad wanted him to be into football – Trent is both of that world and not of it - lives in my head rent-free), and the entire arc of this episode was a really interesting way of easing Trent into this scene.
Being a non-sports, non-celebrity, non-rich person, the one gripe I often have with Ted Lasso is it very much takes the rich celebrity jock-ish status of the team as given – of course the himbos are justified in being paid ludicrous sums of money, of course it’s funny and not unsettling that Jamie thinks of non-celebrities as ‘muggles’. So having Trent, who’ll be the first locker-room-regular to come from a more academic, working-a-regular-non-sports-job-background, will be an interesting dynamic switch.
Roy’s entire arc with Trent just stabbed me in the heart. I always knew there had to be more to the ‘you’re a colossal prick and you always have been’ line and now I feel so freaking vindicated. And whoever pointed out that Roy refused to carry on the cycle of condemning teenage players back in s2 as a pundit…argh.
AND HE CARRIED THAT REVIEW AROUND WITH HIM FOR TWENTY-ODD YEARS. (Apparently the British comedian Eric Morecambe did a similar thing: carrying an old bad review of his first television appearance with him for the rest of his life despite reaching unparalleled success in his heyday. *sniffles*)
The one thing that was slightly jarring about Trent’s return was it felt like everyone (except for Roy) was surprisingly chill about him being at Richmond, considering that he was the journalist who broke the story about Ted’s mental health problems (Keeley even mentions gunning for Trent in the S2 finale). Of course, Ted being Ted we can assume he did a lot of sticking up for Trent at the time, but this only turns us back again to the big, painful, heart-stomping elephant in the room…how much does the rest of the Richmond crew know about the leak? And if it does ever slip out, how exactly is that going to go down?
On that note, I was under the impression that we only had to suffer more of Rupert if we also got more delicious Nate angst and arcs into the bargain. The fact that this week we had Rupert’s gross manipulations and no Nate is just a slap in the face.
(Anthony Head remains so wonderfully evil though.)
Zava! I’ve been hypothesising about him since leaked pictures of the first West Ham match hit Twitter, and I’m really interested in seeing where he goes…though, I’ll be real, right now he strikes me as just a prick. And not even a dumb, amusing prick like s1 Jamie (who I knew I was going to have a grudging soft spot for back when he piped up about the snacks being shit), but just…a prick. We’ll see though. I’m also really looking forward to seeing Jamie’s reaction to Zava: if he doesn’t like sharing the spotlight with another ace, or if it’s seeing the primadonna beneath the glamour and not wanting Zava to hurt his team.
And speaking of Zava’s hire…Rebecca’s takedown of him was magnificent, and her ability to be dragged into dodgy business decisions just to one-up Rupert are being played for laughs right now…but let’s be real, this show always plays things for laughs before turning the tables on you. Which basically means: this is going to hurt like a motherfucker.
Also REBECCA WAS THE OTHER WOMAN?!?!? God, that adds so many layers to Sassy telling her she’d hurt people while with Rupert. I cannot wait to find out more about that, it’s already hurting my heart.
DANI SCORING A GOAL WITH HIS FACE. Also his puppy dog excitement about Zava, which I’m sure won’t come back to bite him in the arse later.
I love how Higgins is basically the Richmond equivalent of Varys – he has his contacts everywhere, and no secrets are secret from him.
Keeley and Barbara! Honestly, I’m quite here for where this is going – Barbara’s attitude in this ep unkind and, let’s be honest, pretty classist when it came to Shazza(? Keeley’s model friend?), but also you do need someone to be boring and sensible and check the numbers when it comes to running a business. I’m hoping they keep working together well.
And that moment when Keeley watched Roy come back to Chelsea *lip wobble*
Actually, that entire Chelsea return moment…
AND the knowledge that Roy left Chelsea and Keeley because he couldn’t bear to be left… That revelation hurt. Not even Ted batting his eyes cartoon-anime-style could take the sting out of that kick to the chest.
Jamie continuing to go from strength to strength by trying to comfort Roy (unsuccessfully) in this episode, in his own unique fashion. ‘Old people are jumpy because of the war’ was incredible.
Not nearly enough himbos in this episode, I’m sorry to say, but the scene where they react to Zava, Trent, and Roy breaking up with Keeley was a thing of absolute beauty. And Beard’s shriek at the news was both hilarious and justifiable.
I’m also fascinated by the choice to have the himbos identify the best tactic to fight back at the Chelsea match, rather than Ted – it’s the second time in so many episodes when someone else has stepped up to do something which would traditionally be Ted’s role, and I’m wondering if there’s a pattern here. (And if there is, how Ted – who’s clearly uncertain about his place at Richmond – will interpret that.)
God, I almost nearly forgot that this was the episode where we found out that Isaac is a student of kinesics (Renaissance man!) and apparently regularly checks out Roy’s arse. Here we were all thinking Colin would be confirmed queer this season…is McAdoo about to sneak in from under our noses?
Also the post-gym scenes made this the episode where I realised the Greyhounds are definitely sporting a somewhat more...athletic look this season. I may have to put together some s1 v s3 comparison pics to be sure about this. Stay tuned.

You said Jamie spends the off-season injured, is this because of something with his Dad and the aforementioned horrors or is it a coincidence in addition to the horrors? And if this is a spoiler you don’t want to share then I was never here.
Aw yessss! A question! I LOVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE THINGS I AM WRITING.
There are definitely some key developments that I am keeping under wraps, but I will Neil Gaiman that shit if it comes up. As it stands, this topic is very open for discussion! In fact, it comes up in the very next chapter-
cut for spoilers
So in this fic Jamie's injury is actually a holdover of the injury he got in Mom City. The top of his foot hit a very fast moving ball on a downward trajectory midair and hit at a very unfortunate angle. He's lucky he didn't break anything, but it did do some soft tissue damage (I am paraphrasing here because I have not put all of my medical jargon notes into order yet). It wasn't the worst injury to have, but it was definitely a 'safer to stay off it' injury. A 'you may want to take it easy' injury.
With West Ham and the final game literally around the corner, taking it easy wasn't an option, and everyone agreed to play him anyways.
So post-season comes around and Jamie is like 'thank fuck. I need a break. And Dani isn't in town, and even though I told Keeley I was sorry things still feel weird, and Roy and I just had a big weird fight so he probably could use a break from me. Good thing Isaac and Colin invited me to go on this weird history hike thing in Malta.'
And then he pops in for his post-season physical and upon seeing that he actually has even less range of movement in his ankle than he did immediately after getting injured, the physios break into Gollum-level amount of chanting 'my precious's and slap his foot in a walking brace for a minimum of two weeks. They have a regular amount of concern for What Will Happen To Them If Jamie Tartt's Foot Is Broken. A reasonable, regular, understandable amount of concern. Especially given who the new gaffer is.
This is a thing that becomes a big topic moving forward- how the physicality demanded by the sport means that most teams have players playing injured by the end of the season. For Richmond, it's not just Jamie's foot. It's also Dani's knee (the knee surgery that he left for is from ongoing complications from his original season one injury) and O'Brien's butt (again, an old injury) and Sam's legs (we'll pretend I've decided what injury just know he has one).
Then you add in someone like Roy, who now has permanent mobility issues with his knee. And he's the one in charge of all these fuckers now.
To complicate matters, their Total Football strategy largely and predominantly focuses on Jamie being able to play. And after the epic meltdown he had in the boot room, Roy is now very conscious of how goddamn lucky they were that they didn't completely burn him out last season. Hell, they're lucky they didn't burn out most of the first string.
So a big part of the Diamond Dogs strategy sessions ends up focusing on answering the question of what their plan is for the next year. Because they want to win the whole damn thing. Everyone wants to win the whole damn thing. They were so close. But also, as Roy already told Jamie in chapter one, that burn out thing? Yeah, that's not fucking happening again. Not on his watch.
Then, there's Jamie. Foot in a boot. Summer plans cancelled. Stuck in Richmond where the physios can poke at him. And he can't even use training as an excuse to go bother Roy because he can't train right now.
As for The Horrors, well. The message he sent to his dad weeks ago just flipped from 'sent' to 'read.' The Horrors in this case are overwhelmingly mental and emotional, because Jamie is doing what he thinks he was told to do. Forgive his dad. That is what he is trying to do. And it is eating him alive. It is grating him across the asphalt. He is tearing himself to pieces trying to make it happen. He is crawling over glass, trying to make himself do this thing that his mind is screaming at him not to do. And he is trying his best to be okay with it, but he is really really viscerally not okay.
That is The Horrors here.

First time Jamie realizes he’s a girl soemtimes, go
Oh, I be cycling through ideas on this constantly, most of them almost entirely incoherent lmao. I'll slap together a Top Current 3 for ya right quick.
1. As A Child
I mean like a wee bairn. Like Phoebe's age. This is also pre- James "coming around" so it fully starts out as one of those feel good fluff pieces of yeah I always knew my parents did everything right I transitioned in kindergarten and all the neighbors applauded. You know. In this version, Jamie/Georgie picked the gender neutral nickname on purpose.
This one continues to not be an angst fest even when James does start coming around. Homophobia and transphobia go hand in hand with misogyny, so I'm certain James is those too. However he's also arrogant and careless, and if you add on substance abuse probably not very present.
So, for this one I'm saying James just... never knows lmfao. Jamie just fully consciously is like That's None of His Business and it's almost laughably easy to keep it from him, with very little distress on Jamie's part. Did you ever see ND Stevenson describe that being closeted was (for a while) like having a fun secret and every time someone used his assigned pronouns he felt like he was getting away with something? Like that.
Later, it doesn't so much feel like that for Jamie anymore just because as an adult and then especially as a famous adult he has to keep it on the down low much more extensively, somewhat in order to continue keeping it from James and somewhat to avoid the whole Circus due to the fame part (and also probably he has some vague worries about if he'd still be allowed to play in a men's sports league). It starts to feel a lot more like a closet that way.
But! That doesn't last very long either because James gets seen off after Wembley because fuck him and a yearlong streak of no contact is something to celebrate 🩷 + things went pretty great for Colin + fuck the haters + his environment is truly so full of love and support now it's back to the same level it was in the Before James times so it's easy all over again. He always knew and he transitioned in kindergarten and then he transitioned again at 25 and the football club applauded, etc.
2. Dating Keeley (the First Time)
The way Jamie in canon describes his relationship with Keeley, she was the first domino for him and Ted came second. She saw an even greater Jamie inside an already great Jamie, she made him cultured, she took him to plays and shit, and she taught him to stop getting in his own way as much.
And as per my interpretation, she also taught him at statistically significant amount about intimacy and sex. So... why not also gender?
His egg cracks in a totally mundane moment of non-sexual intimacy with Keeley at Keeley's house, maybe snuggled up on her couch with her furry pillows, maybe watching TV or maybe painting each other's nails or maybe she's reading to him or he's trying to make her laugh.
I think in this version he doesn't really officially Come Out to anybody. He just... starts being a girl sometimes. He's comfortable with his name and he's as comfortable with 'he' as he is with 'she' and that doesn't really change circumstantially. So he just sort of starts gradually incorporating whatever gender affirming stuff he likes into his daily life (both as a man and as a woman and as someone who has no strong feelings on the gender aspect but loves the performance, as relevant). It's literally just. A complete non-issue, once Jamie himself decides he's chill about it, which again happens pretty quickly after James shuffles off this narrative coil because Jamie is resilient and brave and proud and sucks up supportiveness like a sponge.
Roy, Keeley, and Georgie (and by extension Phoebe, Rebecca, and Simon) eventually kind of pick up on it just from being around Jamie so much and seeing him interact with femininity enough that they can't help but notice that it Fits him. Maybe one of them calls him a girl or uses 'she' for him as a joke (i.e. like "girls, you're both pretty" from Roy when Jamie and Keeley are bickering or something like that) and see the way it makes him glow. But he hasn't asked for anything in particular, and he doesn't seem like he's hiding anything, you know he doesn't seem to have that ache like Colin talked about, so... unless he tells them otherwise they just mix in the new pronouns and carry on.
3. When Everyone Points Their Gaydars at Him (LMAO)
This is literally just. alsfjkasfkks. "Someone else in this room is probably gay," and they all look at him, and just instantly POP oh shit there's a reason for that huh? Damn. Anyway, we don't have time for that halftime's almost over. Also that's one of those things where if you realize it that suddenly, either you blurt it out without ever thinking the words you say or else you don't and still don't think any words. His whole entire self is like okay. More on that later.
In this version, he does Come Out. He's not really nervous about it because, again, This Kind Of Thing already went great for Colin + support sponge. And also because it's funny, innit. I love in-jokes, I'm about to make one.
No one is surprised, in this version. They all have basically the same experience as Jamie had when his egg cracked. Oh yeah, that's what that was. Oh, also! The team together like mad-libs together a Frankensteinish approximation of Ted's "we don't not care" speech that no one who wasn't there would be able to comprehend a lick of (RIP Isaac and Roy).
Once again I do not know how to end the post. Thank you for the ask.

their love for each other. <3 they're such a nice match.
Tumblr media
You're a douche, but I love you anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can you believe they're in love now?
Tumblr media
Tbh, I'm surprised about how easygoing and calm Roy is in 1x01 and here. He's more emotional somehow in s3? With more emotions bottled up?

I'm sorry, he has a yellow iphone in s1? Ok then.
Tumblr media
Jamie just can't sit straight from DAY ONE. Also, Sam is playing Nintendo. Niiice.
Tumblr media
Just yesterday I wrote a post about Jamie being brave for finding his true inner voice and trying to communicate with people. What I find precious is that, aside being mean to Sam and occasionally to his fellow players in s1, Jamie is trying to communicate with Ted anyway, since ep1. Ted asks a question if the snacks are tasty enough, and Roy goes, "Jesus Christ." Jamie, however, walks up to Ted and easily answers. Ted nods to him in gratitude, like, "Thank you. It's noted and will be fixed."
In 1x01, Jamie is ready to go as Keeley walks in, "Sorry, Coach, she ordered me waxing. [...] Unless you want me to stay?" and he ACTUALLY waits for Ted to answer him. It's a show's base for Ted to be awkward and tell Jamie, like, "No, you can go", but if he said that, "Actually, I need you to stay for a moment", I'm sure Jamie would stay. When Jamie is on his way out, he nods to Ted and bumps fists with him in a high five manner.
Like, it's nice gestures. Jamie is actually a nice kid underneath all that abuse and trying to act up to cover for the consequences of that abuse. I'm not saying being mean is justified if you were abused, but I do understand where it's coming from with Jamie. I love this kid.

Jamie's caaar. Keeley will occasionally be Jamie's driver, but she still gets to use that car whenever and however she likes. I'm glad that Jamie's salary allows him to treat people he loves like THAT. Himself, too, obviously.
I forgot how mean Rebecca is in s1, wow. It's like she's a completely different woman compared to s3.

Rebecca & Keeley. <3 Keeley is such a sweetheart.

Can someone explain why the hell did I suddenly fall into some het/bi ship so hard. Like, I always liked Jamie during first two seasons, I just screamed about it on twt instead of tumblr. But jfc, the moment s3 started airing, it's like I turned into a different person (or maybe I finally allowed myself to enjoy this ships in this universe). Maybe it's also bc I binged the first 2 seasons on my own and didn't participate in the fandom. Then there was such a big gap between s2 and s3, and now I'm watching s3 every week and marinade in it, so it's kind of dragging me into this void.
Like, I ship them. Absolutely unironically. S3 Jamie and Keeley kissing when? When you have your ships/ot3 and you'll go down with them.

Again, he participates. He communicates. Roy wouldn't even get involved (many from the team wouldn't tbh), but Jamie? Sorry, but he's a sweetheart as well & I love him with all my heart.
Tumblr media
Jamie winking at Keeley, then gently slaps her ass. It's ridiculous that I like this ship this much, really. S3 is gonna murder me and drag my corpse around by the end of it.

Pub dates. <3 They're so wholesome.

Your husband best friend holding your coffee while you play with a teen in a park. <3 They're really cute.

Roy/Jamie prompt: AU after Keeley sends them both packing when they ask her to choose between them. Instead of getting kebabs they are both still super mad at each other. They go back to Roy and their tempers boil over again. They brawl like in the movie Mr & Mrs Smith, until Roy realizes how much he’s actually hurt Jamie. Then they are making love like Mr & Mrs Smith did right after they stopped brawling.
Oh my god
As soon as one of them really starts bleeding Roy realizes and stops. They are both strong so there’s some damage to them and the house.
He reaches out to Jamie who slaps blindly at Roy, but Roy just grabs Jamie and yanks him into a hug. He starts whispering apologizes and that he doesn’t know how they ended up like this. Jamie pulls himself back and basically thinks that it can’t get much worse if he kisses Roy right now, so he does.
That works incredibly well and suddenly they and ripping clothing off and Roy is pushing Jamie over the back of the couch.
The next morning when Jamie wakes up in Roy’s bed he’s almost positive that Roy will kill him now. As he starts to roll forwards he realizes that Roy’s arm is around his waist.
He’s pulled backwards into Roy, he shivers at how strong Roy still is. Roy moves his hand up Jamie’s chest over the hickeys he left last night and ends up just holding Jamie’s throat.
He pulls Jamie’s head back to see his face. Jamie’s pupils are black, he is fighting everything in his head right now. Roy just smiles and leans to kiss him.
They loose another few hours together.
When they finally make it out of bed they actually talk. They both apologize and agree that it was really stupid, the fight, not the sex. Jamie suggests they see therapists and Roy agrees, they spend the rest of the day on the couch just talking. When it’s night time again and Jamie goes to leave, Roy uses his big boy words and asks him to stay.

WIP WEDNESDAY
welcome back to Who's WIP Is It Anyway, where the word count doesn't matter and weeks of research will end up becoming a single sentence! today with your host, Me, offering a snippet from Ideal Lasso Spin Off Feat. RoyJamie Fic, aka 'roy kent gets bullied by a bunch of nwsl lesbians, deserves it'
Over the course of his career Roy’s had a few different agents within the same firm, but he likes his current agent the best. She doesn’t much like conversating, she’s not a fan of speculation or gossip, and she trusts Roy’s own instincts about whatever offers are made to him whether they happen to be career moves or otherwise. He’s only met with her in person a grand total of twice, and he only hears from her when there’s something for him to hear about.
Roy makes sure she gets a ridiculously ornate basket of posh goodies every year for Christmas for her trouble and temperament, and he always gets a thank you card promptly after New Year’s in her exactingly perfect cursive. He literally could not ask for better, and he doesn’t plan to.
Which is why he always gives her infrequent e-mails the proper attention they deserve.
The title of the e-mail is ‘Friday Round-Up’, and Roy gives it a perfunctory scroll around eleven while he waits for the kettle. It’s the sort of day where he’s not expected anywhere by anyone; Nelson Road’s a ghost town as nearly all the team makes the most of the early weeks of between seasons time, Roy’s sister and niece fully occupied by work and school, and Keeley—
He puts her out of his mind again immediately. Roy hasn’t spoken more than a word or two to Keeley since the disastrous night Jamie and himself had wound up at her front door, and he can’t imagine she would want to hear from him now. A lifetime of teaching himself the sort of off-the-pitch social cues most people just seemed to instinctively know never prepared him for the bone-melting embarrassment of being completely off the mark, of being so incorrect that you might as well have traversed off the map entirely.
Sure, Roy knew now that his belief that Keeley and himself would end up back together wasn’t him reading the situation and signals appropriately, but something more akin to wishful thinking. The most mortifying and horribly revealing sort of wishful thinking.
‘—benefit both parties to meet face to face in the upcoming weeks to discuss the potential advantages of your inclusion on our coaching staff, as you come highly recommended by Coach Lasso—’
Roy abruptly pauses his halfhearted navel gazing and rereads the body of the e-mail over again, and then once more. He flips out of his email app to his contacts, slapping his thumb over Ted’s contact once, and then twice to press ‘call’.
“Why the fuck is a Kansas football team offering me a job?” He demands as soon as the line picks up.
There’s a soft pause, and Ted replies with, “I do not remember ordering a Roy Kent wake-up call, but you know what, I’m not mad about it. Though I think I would like a, just a pinch of clarification. But a pinch like my gramma would use a pinch of shredded cheese for potato soup, y’know, an amount you feel with your heart.”
With a perverse sort of anger at the sensation, Roy feels his annoyance slowly shrivel up as Ted continues being Ted at him from the other side of the Atlantic.
“Sorry,” he grunts finally, eying his kettle like it’s personally wounded him. “It’s not too early? I’ll call back.”
“Oh no no,” Ted says, and makes a noise like he’s stretching his way out of bed. “And miss whatever this is? Not on your life, Fanny Brice.”

No thoughts, head empty just - 🌟 clingy ted 🌟
Ohhh, clingy Ted. I'm a big fan of touch and snuggling and all those cute disgusting things couples do. And I feel like Ted would love to show you off and be wrapped around you at every opportunity. Right? Right. Some little snippets of how clingy Ted can be. Let's goooo!
---
Relationship: Ted Lasso x reader
Warnings: Mostly cute and fluffy
---
Your plane left early. Too early for Ted to be up, honestly. But he insisted on driving you to the airport and got out to get your bags, and then hugged you tight, kissing your lips softly.
"I'm gonna miss you, darlin'," he murmured, his voice deep and sad.
"I'll be home in three days, Teddy. Just a conference!" you tried to cheer him up, but since the two of you got together, you spent very little time apart.
He loved having someone who enjoyed being around him. That was new to him.
And you loved having someone you enjoyed being around, too. It was new to you, too.
Both of your prior relationships had ended with people who felt you were both "too much." But you weren't too much for each other.
As soon as you got to your gate to wait to board, you had a text:
"Miss you already, darlin'. The bed is cold. Counting down the minutes. xoxoxoxoxoxo"
And for three days he texts you the cutest and most innocuous things.
The coffee's not very good today. How's your coffee?
Rebecca asked me to ask you where you got your handbag from the other day.
I miss you so much my heart aches.
Don't watch the new Bake Off without me.
Oh, I want to watch the new Bake Off but I'm waiting for you.
TWENTY FOUR HOURS LEFT
And, sprinkled in there, plenty of selfies of his smiling face, or pouting face. Especially at night in your far-too-empty bed.
...
When he picked you up from the airport a few days later, he practically lifted you off the ground, hugging you and kissing you all over.
"Get a room, Lasso!" an irritated passenger shouted at him, making him grin and offer back a wave.
"Home?" you ask and kiss his lips, and he smiles. "Home."
You get in the door, change into cozy clothes, and lay in your bed for a minute, so happy to be back in your space. He crawls in behind you, wraps his body around yours and tucks his knees the crook of your legs.
His lips kiss your ear softly, and he hums happily to have you in his arms again.
...
The next night you're at the pub with your friends, and he's got his arm around your waist, or around your shoulders, or holding your hand. He just wants you near. Always.
"God, Ted you act like you haven't bloody seen her in a decade!" Keeley chides, taking a sip of her cocktail.
Ted looks over at you and grins, kissing your lips gently. His mustache tickles and you smile and blush.
"Well, three days felt like a lifetime," he adds, kissing your cheek, your hand on his chest. "Besides, gotta show off this perfect creature any time I can!"
Roy grumbles about PDA. Keeley slaps him.
"Oi! I wish you were a bit more lovey-dovey with me, Roy!" she jokes smirking at him, and he puts his arm around her waist and smiles.
Ted holds your hand on the walk home, looking at you with a big smile.
"What are you gawkin' at?" you ask with a blush.
"The most beautiful thing in the world," he answers, pulling your hand to his lips to kiss it.
...
At home, you kick off your shoes and plop on the couch to turn on a movie, and Ted sits right next to you, his arm around your shoulders, bringing you to his chest. His lips kiss the crown of your head.
When your arm ropes over his tummy, he leans down, curling the both of you together even further.
"I love this," he says with his deep drawl. You tilt your head in interest.
"I love being curled up with ya, or holdin' ya, or touchin' ya," he adds, his hand coasting up and down your side.
You lace your fingers through his and smile up at him.
"I love it too. I love you most of all."
---
This was cute. I could almost do another post of just headcanons of how Ted always has to have his hands on you. He just adores physical touch and it's even better when it's reciprocated. Thanks for this adorable prompt, my lovely friend!
