The African Lilies are so beautiful today with their spiky white flowers in the shape of spheres. They are originally from South African but grow amazingly out here in Ireland do to the earths natural rich clay and sandy loams, and it’s mild winters.

A range of Agapanthus cultivars are flowering including Agapanthus 'Enigma' (African lily) which is a bicoloured cultivar with white flowers, that are pale blue at the base. These plants thrive in containers needing a moist but well-drained growing media or soil in full sun. Some species and cultivars are not fully hardy, and may need protection in winter.

Hates being too cold and wet in the winter. They will be reluctant to flower if allowed to dry out after flowering in late summer. Flowers over a long period. Suitable for containers. The Agapanthus have provided a good display this year but are beginning to fade. However, the almost spherical heads of semi-double flowers from Agapanthus 'White Heaven' (African lily) continue to attract the bumblebees. This cultivar has a compact habit ideal for containers but may need some winter protection.

The African lily is a flowering plant from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. It has a short narrow stem bearing a central flower stalk, ending in an umbel of bright blue, fragrant funnel-shaped flowers. Though visually delicate, it is a deceptively tough plant. It performs well in both partial shade or full sun.
