Mwah-ha-ha-ha!!!! You thought you escaped didn’t you! you thought you’d be free but no, it’s time for another episode of: Fausto! reviews! things! *uproarious applause from me and no one else*
and on the sixteenth day of reviewm-
nah, fuck that christmas shit. i’m so fucking sick of christmas.
anyhoo, today’s review is, surprisingly, not of a poorly animated children’s cartoon, not a cheesecake filled anime, and not a book. it’s a review of my experience being off tumblr and all social media for 3 months after unwillingly having my brain rewritten to associate being on tumblr with getting fat by an ed tumblr post from the trending page.
i was avoiding making this post because i didn’t want to jinx myself, but since i was banking review posts i thought i might as well cram this one in there too.
my anxiety is gone.
it’s honestly kind of scary how not anxious i am. fortunately it’s scary and not anxiety inducing, lol. feels dumb to find out the endless stream of comedy and memes was affecting my health but eh, it is what it is.
i also noticed at one point that i was no longer waking up hungry or needing to snack between meals to make it through the day. gone are the days of eating then immediately brushing my teeth and going to bed and being hungry again before i was able to fall asleep.
so i guess tumblr was making me anxious, anxiety makes me excessively hungry; so no tumblr equals no anxiety equals normal hunger. basically the worst part is, the stupid idea that “tumblr is making me fat” was correct.
golly gee whizz, i think i found a solution for the ed side of tumblr.
it’s also like my executive dysfunction is better, somewhat. instead of thinking “i need to do X” and finding out that there’s 13 steps between me and doing X and freaking out over each and every step and how each step could go wrong i’ll either think “whelp, i’m not doing 13 steps fuck it.” and then i stop worrying about it or else i go “god damn it have to do 13 god damned steps fucking step 1 stupid god damned thing to do and here’s 2 and 3…” etc etc etc. basically i can muscle my way into getting up and doing the steps if i throw profanities at it the entire time. so still a coping mechanism but i am getting more shit done.
also tumblr is still crashing on me. it’s a gamble whether or not the next dash page will load. sometimes it just freezes up. fucking crashed on me a few minutes ago when i reported a bot that was in my inbox during the reporting of said bot. was crashing on me back in september/october. was crashing on me during my brief returns during the hiatus. i had hoped it would have gotten better but who am i kidding this website only gets worse not better. unsurprisingly, not knowing whether or not clicking the next page button will take me to the next page or crash is anxiety inducing. so the cards are stacked against me for coming back with any regularity. got some stuff in the queue, hopefully see y'all at valentines day. toodles!

NEW GAMEPLAY!
... ish. It's the same family, but they'll be living the adventures of @bobapplesimblr's A Zesty Kind of LEPacy: Game Packs this time! There has been a huge time jump for this, so let me give you a bit of background:
Fausto fled the farm he grew in as soon as he was able to and moved to Copperdale to start a new life on his own, despite being a teenager. As evil and mischievous as he can be, he devoted himself to be the town's new terror until he met Kaori, his high school sweetheart. He got her pregnant shortly after they became an official couple, and those 16 year olds did al it was possible to raise their baby daughter, Camila, in the best way they could. Now, after 10 years of lots of high and lows and living cramped up in a micro studio, the family decided to move into a new place and get Camila away from Copperdale's teenage drama. They just settled in Newcrest and are hoping it'll be the place their little outdoor lover can call home.

Viddying the Nasties | Zombie Holocaust (Girolami, 1980)
Tumblr media
From my last viewing ages ago, I had strong memories of exactly three things. One, the guy jumping out of the window, followed by the cut to the mannequin being dropped and its arm coming loose. Two, Ian McCulloch taking out a zombie by shredding its face with the blades on a boat motor. Three, the villain’s amazing put down when his plan has been revealed.
“Yours is a typical example of median intelligence. Enough to discover the existence of my secret but absolutely incapable of understanding it.”
Otherwise I remember finding it pretty dumb and bad and not enjoying it very much. I suppose the movie being dumb is still true with this latest viewing, but I had a good enough time this time around.
This is mostly notable for combining the cannibal, zombie and mad scientist genres, and to its credit, it very much does that. The cannibals we get right off the bat, and they are what leads our heroes to go off to the island to investigate further. One of the reasons I’ve watched as many of these cannibal movies as I have is that I enjoy jungle adventures even in morally queasy forms. I must say that I did not feel the voodoo of location in the jungle scenes here, as the characters hang out in not particularly dense stretches of woodland and rarely see any animals. (Although that last bit is in the movie’s favour, as we thankfully get no animal cruelty, something that other entries in the genre offer up depressingly readily.) The shooting locations on this movie’s IMDb page don’t list anywhere near the equator, so that might be why.
The zombies get introduced later, and as you can guess from the poster, they look like shit, although the groaning sound they make is pretty creepy. And the mad scientist reveal comes pretty late, although it’s not much of a surprise if you know the movie by the Dr. Butcher, M.D. title. All of this stuff is pretty goofy, but I must note that there’s a lot of pretty gnarly looking gore, so people normally into these things should have a good time with it. It also helps that you get a Nico Fidenco score, which was apparently mostly recycled from Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, but nevertheless gives this a nice atmosphere. Fausto Zuccoli’s cinematography is much more stylish in the New York scenes oddly enough, not that means the parts of these movies that are normally boring are less so this time around. And you get a pretty game cast, with such recognizable faces as Ian McCulloch, Donald O’Brien, and Alexandra Delli Colli, who wears a number of amazing outfits and eventually gets painted up like a flower child by the cannibals.

☂ Deity of Misfortune
CIOCANA. The mischievous deity of misfortune. Their smile is like molasses, sickly sweet as if to ensnare. Despite what their domain suggests, they're playful and charming, and follow where thrill goes -- but there is a startling sharp look in their eyes, as if measuring the world. Judging it in its entirety. They don't like what they see.
LINEAGE. They are the child of Mirabella, the deity of weather and natural disasters, and Giulia, the goddess of the moon and stars. Ciocana's siblings include Rodas, the god of commerce and wealth, and Fausto, the deity of wine and gratitude.
APPEARANCE. Artfully tousled black hair and dark, intelligent eyes. Their lips are always twisted into a mocking smile. They like to wear bountiful fabrics and laces of black or dramatic red to wear over their dusky skin. They stand at 5'9 / 175cm.
PERSONALITY. Bold, adventurous, charismatic, good-humored, forgiving. // reckless, cynical, overly independent, bitter, distrusting.
RELATIONSHIP TO MC. Although Ciocana aims to cause chaos and trouble for others, any mischief towards MC is relatively lighthearted. They seem to sense a kinship with MC for both being outcasts; for this, they're more open to being truthful to them that they don't offer anyone else.
AMONG MORTALS. Many in higher circles and ambitious city-dwellers fear the deity of misfortune, as if a force of evil that threatens their hard-earned success. Surprisingly, however, they seem to have a small, but dedicated following within the commonfolk. Depending on who you speak to, they're either a deity who rains bad fortune by their mere presence, or an entity who protects others from hardship in spite of their reputation.
TESATA DICERAGA. Common people typically offer their abundance, such as extra wheat or money they receive, for thanks to Ciocana for protecting them during bad times and giving back during good times. For wealthier folks, however, they tend to avoid worship of them.
NOTE. Tesata diceraga" means "sacred information" within the language of the world, which is specifically to refer to the lore of the gods.

Mexican Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa: From Migrant Farmoworker to Neurosurgeon
Tumblr media
Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa is a world-renowned neurosurgeon and researcher who specializes in brain tumors. Originally from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa was just nineteen years old when he came to the United States. According to a CNN profile, he worked as a migrant farmer until he enrolled in university, graduating from the University of California at Berkeley when he was 23. Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa went on to attend Harvard Medical School and began his career at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he led the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Laboratory and published extensively on the role of stem cells in brain tumors and their potential impact in fighting brain cancer. Today, he is Chair of Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, where works in the clinic and leads NIH-funded brain cancer research. Over the years, he has had many scientific accomplishments, including developing new software to help identify tumor areas with the greatest malignant potential and developing new and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa insists, “I just think of myself as a regular guy.”
“I’ve never been one who declines adventure,” he says.
Early life
The oldest of five children, Quinones-Hinojosa as a child had nightmares that he had to save his mother and siblings from fires, floods, avalanches, says his memoir, “Becoming Dr. Q,” which he co-authored.
His interest in medicine may have stemmed from this sense of responsibility, along with his baby sister’s death from colitis (the memoir is dedicated to her).
Short visits to California’s San Joaquin Valley, where Quinones-Hinojosa’s uncle Fausto was a foreman at a ranch, is where he worked at age 14, he spent two months there pulling weeds, making money to bring back to his family.
“That hard-earned cash proved that people like me were not helpless or powerless,” he wrote.
His uncle agreed to let him work a short stint again at the California ranch to supplement his income. A plan began to form in his mind.
Passage into the United States
Quinones-Hinojosa had $65 in his pocket when, the day before his 19th birthday in 1987, he decided to cross into the United States.
Risking arrest, deportation and even death, Quinones-Hinojosa had a plan: He would cross the border in a “Spider-man climb” up an 18-foot-fence, hop over the barbed wire and make a leap into California, he wrote.
With his uncle’s assistance, Quinones-Hinojosa ended up back in the fields in the San Joaquin Valley. The vast farming terrain was teeming with corn, grapes, tomato, cotton, cantaloupe, broccoli, cauliflower. He lived in a trailer.
“There’s a lot of sentiment against immigration nowadays, but at the time, when I came, the U.S. needed my labor.” Quinones says.
Quinones-Hinojosa remembers driving a tractor and seeing agents of the Immigration and Naturalization Service pass by. They would take other workers away, but somehow, he avoided being caught.
Quinones-Hinojosa had wanted to make enough money for his parents and siblings – who later came to the United States as well – and intended to go back to Mexico after saving money. “When you’re making $3.35 an hour, you realize that that dream is going to take a lot longer,” he says.
A different education
Quinones-Hinojosa spent two years at San Joaquin Delta College, taking classes during the day and continuing work for California Railcar Repair in the afternoon.
Quinones-Hinojosa got offers from several universities, he recalls. He chose University of California, Berkeley, because of the scholarship the school offered, but also because he learned it was the epicenter of a social movement in the 1960s. He enrolled at age 23.
But the environment wasn’t entirely supportive. A teaching assistant once told him, “You can’t be from Mexico. You’re too smart to be from Mexico.” He said nothing, but the comment stung. These words would later spur him on to prove people like this wrong.
Next stop: Harvard Medical School. When he matriculated, the U.S. population was about 18% minority, but faculty at medical schools was only about 3.7% minorities, Quinones-Hinojosa wrote in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine. While a student, he earned his U.S. citizenship in 1997.
One of his medical school classmates told him no one could pronounce “Alfredo Quinones,” and suggested he change his name to Alfred Quinn. Instead, he lengthened his name to Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, honoring his mother’s family.
“Alfredo is an outstanding surgeon, and takes very humane and very skilled care of patients with brain tumors,” says chairman of the department of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “His mission is to not only deliver the best possible care, but also to do cutting edge research in order to better understand the diseases and to ultimately find better therapies for those diseases.”
Despite Quinones-Hinojosa’s prominent career, longtime friend, a professor of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, describes him as down-to-Earth: “He’s easy to talk to to. He puts his hand out to shake your hand, and it’s this wonderful warm grip. He’s super friendly. Nothing at all pompous about him.”
Operating on the brain
As a migrant farmer, Quinones-Hinojosa’s work was full of hazards. With the machinery he operated, a wrong move could mean his finger or hand might be gone; he could even have lost his life. One machine he sat on, for picking tomatoes, he called “the astronaut chair.” He had to manage it with both hands and arms.
These days, at Johns Hopkins, he has a different “astronaut chair” – where he sits in the operating room, using his hands, feet and mouth to control instruments and a microscope.
“All that practice began when I was working in the fields,” he says.
Quinones operates on about 250 brain tumors every year. He uses his operating room as an extension of his laboratory. He wants to learn the motor pathways of the brain, what makes the cells “move like spiders” and how to attack them.
He’s working on a method to use human fat cells to fight brain cancer. From the fat, researchers derive mesenchymal stem cells, which appear to be effective in identifying cancer.
“It’s almost like you give a hunting dog something to smell,” Quinones said. “We give the cells the smell of cancer juice and they go back and chase these cancers incredibly well.”
You can tell how much Quinones-Hinojosa loves what he’s doing now by the way he talks about the brain.
Brain cancer, he says, is “the most devastating disease that affects the most beautiful organ in our body: the brain. I’m biased because I’m a brain surgeon."
A patient of 56 years of age of Annapolis, Maryland, learned she had large brain tumor – a non-cancerous meningioma – in 2008. Nervous about her first appointment with Quinones-Hinojosa, she found him to be “a ball of energy,” who was confident that she would be OK.
“He’s just so kind and so friendly and he feels like he’s somebody that you’ve known all your life,” she said.
The morning of the surgery, Quinones-Hinojosa eased the patient's fears. “He told me, ‘No matter what happens in the rest of the world, I will not leave you, you are my concern,’ ” she remembers.
“I guess that’s the thing that makes him so kind and so compassionate, is where he came from,” she said.
In some ways, Quinones-Hinojosa, now 45, is a “regular guy.” He wants his three children – 7, 11 and 14 – to be happy. He tries to exercise to keep himself in good shape, especially for the half-marathons he runs with patients to raise money for brain cancer. He uses the expression “holy guacamole.”
There have been so many moments in his life when a combination of luck and determination carried him through.

The Tresor family is a powerful one, the mind and money behind a huge munitions corporation that sells the arc weapons used by police, military, and even adventurers. Although she comes from a branch family, Lucky's father still wields an insane amount of power. As the 7th child of Fausto and Iliana Tresor, she was faced with an insurmountable amount of pressure, expectations that she could never have met with her mental state. 5 years ago, after flunking out of charm school as her last chance to earn a place in her family's good graces, Lucky ran; because she knew that what they were going to do with her would be worse than death. Tresor Munitions is the backing power behind the ill fortune that has been affecting the Casatriste guild and its members. Now, it's all out in the open, and her fellow adventurers are left to figure out if they still trust her.

Tumblr media
A karmoskerekeknek szentelt "játszótér"? Lapozz a folytatáshoz! World Championship of Custom Bike Building, a különleges motorkerékpároknak szentelt rangos "világbajnokság" színhelyéül szolgál. Car on the Beach-nek, a nagy amerikai autós találkozónak is, amelyen több mint 200 amerikai gyártmányú autó gyűlt össze. A rendezés? A Cruisin' Magazine és az Old School Garage, a pordenone-i székhelyű csapaté, amely meleg fogadtatásban részesítette az Olaszország minden részéből, sőt külföldről is érkező számos szektor klubot, valamint számos "független" résztvevőt, akik sietve érkeztek. Lapozz a folytatáshoz! Minden bizonnyal több ezer kilométert tettek meg a nyeregben a Nagy Motorosok, akik péntek este a világ határain tett hőstetteiknek szentelt konferencia főszereplői voltak. Most a 2024. május 9-12. közötti hétvégére, a 38. Biker Fest International rendezvényre került sor. Előbb azonban Padovába repülünk az American Dreamre (október 13-15.): várunk benneteket!ket! Day Six: It’s All About The Chelonoidis Niger
5:45 am comes around very quickly when you are on holiday. But, after a quick shower and breakfast, our group of Boobies were in the Zodiac and headed off as the sun rose to see the Chelonoidis Niger, or Galapagos Island Tortoise. We had to leave early as the day was going to be a busy one.
We disembarked at Santa Cruz Island and boarded a bus to take us to the highland where thousands of these incredible creatures still roam free. There are 12 living sub-species of these huge vegetarians of the 15 thought to have been here before human interaction. They can grow to a top weight of 700-800 pounds with most mature and older males reaching weights around 300-400. Ages of these behemoths are hard to calculate, but most estimates are in the 175 range. The notion that you can tell by counting the rings on the shell, sort of like tree rings, is a myth. These tortoises are born with a fixed number of rings on their shells and with time, the rings eventually fade away with the oldest ones having basically smooth shells. They eat grasses, plants, and cactus and can go very long periods without having to eat anything or drink water at all. This ability has made it possible for these animals to thrive in the 5 to 6 months of the dry season when there is little to eat and even less to drink. But, history tells us that this made them easy pickings for the human invaders who almost drove them to extinction. Sailors found that these docile creatures could be easily caught and stacked in the bottom of their ships providing protein and fatty food for at least a year. The logs of whaling ships alone attest to the fact that 100,000 tortoises were taken off the islands between the period if 1784-1860. Conservation scientists estimate that the total haul was closer to 300,000. There are now about 30,000 total, due to the efforts of strict penalties for capture and species rewinding. For the last 75 years, over 10,000 have been reared in captivity and released into the wild.
They are free to roam anywhere they choose and most live in areas inaccessible to humans. Many, however, roam across private land and these are the ones that we were searching for. The bus took us to someone’s farm and we roamed about, and after not too long, we’re fortunate to see many. Some were lumbering along, some sleeping in the ponds that dotted the property. Some big, some very big. All magnificent. And again, like all species we have encountered so far, oblivious to our being there. It was a lovely way to spend a lovely sunny morning.
The company that owns and operates our boat offers four four-day routes around the islands. We were booked for the first two of them, but for many of the folks on board, this was the last adventure of their route. We said goodbye to some of our new friends as they headed back to the airport on Santa Cruz for their journey home.
For Diane and I and the rest, this marked our halfway point. So we boarded the bus for a journey to the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Center, started by The Charles Darwin Conservancy on the other side of Santa Cruz Island. This is where we saw what they actually do to sustain and increase the wild tortoise populations of all of these islands. First there was a delightful museum which explained what they do there (especially delightful as the place was air-conditioned and the day was quite sweltering once we left the highlands). Tortoise eggs are taken from the wild from each of the species on each of the islands and raised after approximately 5 years into their natural habitat. So they are bred in the wild and raised in captivity, ensuring that they are safe from any predators in the only stage in their life when predators are an issue. The program has been incredibly successful with upwards of 85-90% success rate. Program managers see a day in the not too distant future when the program may not be necessary. Well done!
Also in the facility are some older giants that have been rescued for one reason or another, nursed back to health, and allowed to depend their golden years at the facility. If you are looking for someplace to donate some extra cash, you certainly should consider this place.
One of the things that I thought was most interesting was one particular species, the saddleback tortoise, a native to seven of the Galápagos Islands. Its shell tilts skyward just behind its head enabling it to stretch its very long neck high in the air to reach the leaves of taller bushes on these islands. The Spanish who first encountered these creatures thought the shells resembled saddles and gave them the name for saddle at that time, “galapago”, and eventually that is where the Islands got their name. Also, it is said that this stretched out neck on one of these creatures at The San Diego Zoo is where Steven Spielberg got the idea for the neck and head of his and our beloved E.T., The Extra Terrestrial.
Alejandro gave us an hour or so to walk back to the bus through the small town near the tortoise center where Diane and I had a refreshing beverage by the seaside before boarding the bus for the journey back across the island.
I had always wanted to see these magnificent animals. What a great day.
More to come…..

Is Gabe still friends with Ángel as adults?
I can see Ángel being the ‘fun uncle’ to Fausto
Omgggg, thank you so much for the ask!!
I thought about it, and yes!! Gabe and Ángel are still friends! I'll just make Ángel to leave Avalor to explain why he's not with Gabe during the canon events, but! I also have a super vague idea of writing their reunion, even though I need to finish "Was Born To Lead" first.
And yes, Fausto, in fact, calls Ángel "tío Ángel", and they're very close, because they actually have some things in common <3
