Unhinged mama

I have a question. Since the system in TPN is so messed up, what if there is an UNHINGED woman who became a mama in one of the 4 plantations? think about it. Is it possible that the children would be abused by their mama before they will be abused by the system she suffered and grew up? Yes, Isabella and sister krone are lowkey unhinged and are good at hiding it. but what if there was a mama who was completely loses her sanity and couldn't hide it anymore? How will the kids react to that? it is obvious it will affect their scores. Hence more and more kids are getting shipped. The kids would not get over the fact that more and more siblings got "adopted". they will be very sad about it ofc. How will the higher ups do something about the rapid decease of children in one of the plantations? They will obviously ship out the mama and probably immediately promote one of the sisters as their new mama. is it possible that this could lead the children to discover the dark truth?

I feel bad for the poor kids. But I need an tpn au about this.

sometimes this does leads me to a question...HOW DID THE KIDS IN GOODWILL ORPHANAGE DISCOVERED THE DARK TRUTH?! did something like that happened? was their mama very unhinged? did they followed their mama and their "soon-to-be-adopted" sibling? and was it out of curiosity to meet the parents or did the same thing happen in Conny's adoption day? but instead of ray planning this to happen, it really did happen on accident. WE NEED MORE INSIGHT OF THE GOODWILL KIDS!! WE NEED MORE DINA, LUCAS AND YUUGO BEING BADASS KIDS!!! what if they are the golden trio like emma, ray and norman? or what if they just scored high enough and get to live longer?

i can definitely imagine yuugo being a rebellious child, lucas being a very good boy and dina getting drag into their mess and shenanigans. I can see her as the only one who can stop the boys from fighting and keep them in check. They probably were the ones who discovered the truth first and planned an escape. since they don't have someone like ray who lowkey knows everything, I REALLY WANNA KNOW HOW DID THEY FIND OUT!! UGGGHHHH!! I NEED ANSWERS!!!

182 Days of TPN - Day 82

Chapter 82: “Master of the Hunting Ground”

It may be all the chatter about emotions leading them to act recklessly and them calling each other idiots, but they’re giving me serious RE vibes right now.

Not a common thing to have a demon give you a round of applause but these kids certainly deserve it.

All of Zack’s best moments once again only taking place during flashbacks, aahhh.. why?? And Bayon is such a bastard for carrying this bloody spear around. Such a menacing way to scare them further.

His subordinates informed him about Emma, Ray & Yuugo before this hunt began, so the fact Bayon somehow figured out there had to be another adult already hiding out here is a bit impressive.

I knew this whole communicating-without-words-while-being-chased-by-demons thing seemed familiar.

What made y’all think you could outrun a demon? A wild demon, maybe, but an intelligent once such as Bayon? Nah.

This predicament is almost as harsh as when Yuugo held Emma at gunpoint and offered Ray the choice to save her or leave the shelter without the WM pen. Both such difficult spots the boys were put into but thankfully didn’t have to make a clear decision in the end due to their enemies getting attacked.

Bless these kids for caring so much about their adoptive dad, but I don’t think Lucas would appreciate them giving up their lives for him. Also don’t believe Nigel would’ve pulled the trigger on her either. If anything, he could’ve aimed the gun a bit higher to shoot at Bayon instead, but even then that move would’ve been risky. Bayon still has his mask on so it wouldn’t do much damage and he could easily move Gillian in the way a bullet in time.

Yeah yeah, thank you Pepe for coming in with the smoke bomb, huzzah, but how could you leave my man Zack behind? (I know he sends Pepe off himself in ch84, but this is pretty much my initial reaction every time I come back to this chapter.)

2) my three favorite characters and why I love them so much:

I should preface this by thanking you for my most recent microcrisis, AKA the abrupt realization that somehow, somewhere along the line... the Theatre Kid Agenda™ has discreetly overtaken my top 3 list.

Speaking of the list:

1- You thought this would be Yuuya, but as it turns out... it's Yuuya! lol.

I'd go ahead and wax the usual poetry about the layers and symbols and all that jazz, but you've already seen me gush about that several times over, so I'll just focus on the babyboy factor for once instead. Yuuya may not have wet kitten energy even at his angstiest, but he sure is a sunshine bean of debatable genuity, and that's just as adoptable!

Looking at him alone is enough to make me want to offer comfort ok. I'm stuffing him in a blanket burrito and shipping him off to my place for a long, long break and some overdue therapy. We can cope with life together, cry a little, cry a lot, bake sweets to recuperate, melt into happy little puddles after a good treat, and then nerd out about theatrics and play a few duels to test silly strategies! This kid is my Son and he deserves all the best things in the world, so for every bit of pain he goes through I'm giving him a truckload of comfort.

2- You may have noticed this in ARC-V Month, you may have picked up on it through my sporadic, scattered mentions of the guy, but if not, then here's a fun fact: I have more than one ARC-V blorbo.

Introducing the central piece of a great many of my conflicted thoughts, confused feelings, paradoxical opinions, abrupt perception shifts, and eventual (semi-)begrudging affection that had me questioning my taste in pixels for like a whole year:

...Zarc.

I've known this fucker for 5 years, hated him for a solid 3, and then woke up one winter day in 2023 and realized that oh shit, he managed to land himself a spot in blorbo tier. Is this what people mean when they say a character grew on them? Were my feelings playing the most long-winded joke on my mind for 4 years? Trust me, I don't know. What I do know is that maining his deck was definitely an endearing factor, and so was the 3rd ARC-V watch (this is where I started uncovering most of the easter eggs I know about the show, so perhaps the build-up made me a touch biased over time, but I genuinely found the 136-139 marathon more entertaining than annoying for once. We speak not of 140).

TL;DR: I think the lettuce clown is neat. Past me would have a stroke if I told her I'm a Zarc apologist now tho.

3- Super Duper Ultra Hyper Extra Mega- ok I'll stop now.

Sawatari is actually the one surprise in this list to me because, huh, I didn't realize how much I liked him over other nearly as cool characters until I put them side by side and pondered who brings me more joy when on-screen. I thought 3rd place would be someone like Yuugo, maybe Serena, but it seems I've taken a spontaneous shine to the banana peel?

(Help how does this keep happening why am I weak to clowns lmao)

See, Shingo's character may be on the simpler side by virtue of being the... designated comic relief, but that simplicity is part of his charm! The mix of charismatic and pathetic aura is a also rare thing, you know- It's not easy to be so cool and cringe at the same time and make it feel natural. That takes skill.

And speaking of skill, Shingo has my respect for always putting up a good fight, even in the games he loses to all sorts of jobber bullshit. He's a genuinely good duelist and a great entertainer, and I love that for him!

10) how many fics I've read that are set in it (approximately and making exaggerated guesstimates):

Guesstimate: Around a thousand. I've been around the fandom long enough to read all sorts of fics on ff.net and Ao3 (among other sites), and it sure feels like I've seen a lot, looking back.

Actual number: Approximately 600, rounding down. On Ao3 alone. Huh, I was expecting the number to be like, 200, so this is not too far off, actually! Maybe the reason the fic count feels higher than it is because the memorable reads tend to be REALLY long multichapters. Why are these so common in the ARC-V tag, by the way? Is it the allure of crossovers? The canon divergence AUs?

(The answer is both, and a few other factors as well. Good for us, I say! Longfics are a serious test of commitment, and I'm glad to see and follow so many talented and dedicated authors!)

Find Me On Neverpeak Mountain - post-canon fix-it where Ray decides he will get Emma’s memories back if he has to find the seventh wall and kill the unpronounceable demon there to do it. Norman agrees that this sucks but wants to respect Emma’s choice, terrified that pursuing this will incur a new cost and make things worse. Also, they keep this a secret from Emma for way way way too long. She doesn’t have her memories, but she’s plenty competent.

[no title yet!] - medieval fantasy au: Emma is the adopted daughter of Yuugo and Lucas, but Lucas (apparently) died in battle years ago. She is training to be a knight like her dads. Ray is the son of the woman who runs the orphanage Emma was at, and they became friends and kept up the friendship after she was adopted (or so it seems. the orphanage is pretty sketchy and Ray is in on it in some way. plus his mom wants him to spy on Emma for her for some reason.). They started getting too busy to spend time together so they agreed to meet in a field near their houses late on Thursday nights. They happened to meet a boy there one night who told them his name was Norman and that he snuck out. The three of them become friends and make it a semi-regular tradition, but, on the night of Ray’s twelfth birthday, Norman doesn’t come and he never comes again. Norman had told them that he had been very sick ever since he was young, so Ray says that he must be dead and they should stop coming there, their schedules have cleared up enough that the two of them can meet during the day. However, when fourteen-year-old Emma goes with Yuugo to watch him compete to work with the Royal family, Emma sees Norman. Except, he’s the prince, and apparently his "real" name is James Ratri II.

Honeysuckles and Edelweiss - technically-could-be-canon-compliant-until-the-end Hanahaki AU. Ray has Hanahaki for Emma and Norman from near age 10. Emma is honeysuckles. Norman is edelweiss. He decides it’s pointless to tell them at the orphanage since he’s gonna kill himself long before the flowers can (the symptoms don’t get strong enough to risk death until one is around 16). When he’s out with Emma, he’s not sure about telling her. At first it’s because he’s scared that, if she doesn’t reciprocate, she’ll blame herself. But, as he gets the sense that she does reciprocate, he decides that confessing to her and getting the surgery to remove his feelings for Norman would be miserable, and that he wants to wait as long as he can and then get the surgery for both flowers when they’ve made it to the ending Emma will find for them by then. Good thing he’s waiting, hoo boy, because Norman’s alive, lol. By now he’s not totally confident, but finds it pretty plausible they both reciprocate. He considers confessing, but when he gets a good sense of Norman’s state he decides that they should wait for Emma to win and for them to make it to the human world. Of course, then Emma is gone. He decides waiting would be a mistake and knows they will find Emma, so he confesses to Norman. He reciprocates and finding Emma becomes doubly important to him when he learns Ray also loves her. The big canon divergence is that, while the promise was the same in word, she remembers as soon as they find her because this is my fic I can do what I want. Also Ray isn’t there because, at this point, he’s sixteen, and the symptoms have gotten bad enough that traveling that far is not safe for him. She gets there and reveals she’s known all along but trusted him. Of course she reciprocates. There’s a bit more that happens next that I’m still working out. I think Norman and Emma are, shockingly, the holdout here. They’re both dumb about it and Ray helps them work it out which is unbelievable to everyone (especially him!). Also Ray is in a wheelchair because his lungs have been through a lot, Emma’s memory is much less functional than it used to be, and Norman has epilepsy, and they all help each other adjust to life after they’ve spent so long feeling like they have to be perfect specimens.

Too Slow (bad title) - Emma manages to disable Norman’s tracker and slam her broken leg into the ground before Norman can stop her. The plan is ruined, and a panicked Norman is forced to do what he can with the time given to them. He, Ray, and a decent amount of children manage to get out, but not Emma. Phil and Sherry get out too, but not Jemima, Thoma, and Lanni. Emma can’t be a Mother now, not that she would if she could, and she declares that she would rather die than allow anyone else to die for her. Norman is completely disillusioned about Emma’s beliefs, and Ray is totally shattered. I’m torn on whether Emma lives or not. Probably. Meeting her again will be even more emotionally confusing for the boys than meeting Norman in canon, and I wanna see that. Phil’s gonna have to step up big time in this one with both Ray and Norman being useless for quite some time.

[no title yet!] - Originally written to be a oneshot nightmare that Ray has, but I like it too much for that now. Basically, Emma finds out Norman and Ray are both planning to sacrifice themselves, and she makes the decision to sell their entire plan out to Mama. She sees Mama’s view at least in part, and says that she will make sure nobody escapes or dies trying. Her only condition is that Mama recommend her to be a Mother. She declares that she will be better at it than her, and that nobody will ever learn the truth because she will be so much better at loving her children and making them truly happy. Ray overhears all of this and desperately tells himself that it must be some gambit Norman came up with. It’s not. So now Ray has to find a way to try to get Norman to believe Emma can’t be trusted, which is gonna be a hard sell, of course. Plus, no matter what, both of them are determined to get her out even if they have to drag her kicking and screaming, which may well be necessary.

Left Is Alright

or: Handedness in The Promised Neverland 👈👉

Apparently I‘ve got too much time on my hands (hah!), and while re-reading the manga I made several discoveries about handedness I wanted to share with you.

First of all, about 90-95 % of the human population are right hand dominant, which is mirrored in The Promised Neverland with a large majority of the characters being right-handed.

Now it gets (more) interesting – the few left-handed characters we met throughout the story. First and most prominent of them all would be Norman; using his preferred hand was even a major plot point later one when he noticed someone in Lambda had to take the same daily tests as him, but left the pen on the right side of the pad, instead of Norman, who left it one the, well, left side.

Now back to other left-handed characters – for example, Smee. Although we can‘t clearly see him using his left hand while writing in the manga, the anime did so:

(sorry for the low quality😑) and with this, we can conclude Smee‘s left-handed.

Another character that is presumably being left-handed is James Ratri aka William Minerva; the way he wears his watch on his right wrist leads me to this conclusion, since you‘re usually wearing your watch on your non-preferred hand.

Additionally, in the inside cover of Volume 2, we were able to see William Minerva write with his left hand too:

Also adding Adam here, since we see him (once) stitching up his teddy bear with his left hand:

(Isn’t it impressive how a big guy like Adam can now handle fragile objects like needles and is also able to sew after only two years? 🧸❤️)

Which further makes me believe Norman and Adam are clones (in one way or another), maybe even from the same source… the same left-handed source, even?! (looking at you James >>)

It‘s also stated on several sites Leslie‘s left-handed, but… I couldn‘t find any evidence for that claim? As seen in the anime, he‘s playing the mandoline as a right-handed person would do, so I actually doubt he is left-handed (of course if he‘s actually left-handed and we learned about that in the novels, I‘ll take it all back, but it‘s quite complicated to find a source for this).

Last, but not least – Lucas! Because, well, there are no other options anymore than using his left hand (thanks, Leuvis).

I think it‘s safe to say Lucas wasn‘t left-handed before, but having to rely on his only hand left (hah! unintended pun again!) he counts as left-hander, too.

By now you may ask „But Snickers, that‘s no hot tea and not interesting at all!“ and I‘ll answer you proudly „yes, I know, but now we get to what, or better, who I truly wanted to highlight“. 😅

Yes, exactly.

Yuugo.

He‘s nowhere stated as being left-handed, presumably because he‘s seen on various occasions using his right hand, handling guns or doing other tasks.

But that‘s not how he‘s introduced, because:

Threatening the children with a knife, merely scratching Emma‘s cheek with a bullet as intended, carrying his gun on his left side all leads me to one conclusion: Yuugo‘s ambidextrous. He can use both hands as quite as good, an attribute only around 1% of world’s population shares, which means it’s even rarer than being left-handed!

The question remains, why did Yuugo foremost used his left hand during his introduction arc and later on his right hand? It’s speculation by my side, but I would blame it on this:

Yuugo is a sentimental man who cares a lot about others, even if he can’t quite show his feelings properly most of the time. Still feeling guilty about what happened to his family and especially Lucas, I could imagine he didn’t wanted to hurt the children with the hand that carried a part of Lucas with him, no matter how much he resented the Grace Field-escapees. As soon as Yuugo accepted he’s now the adoptive father of 15 very noisy, very annoying but also very his children (more or less🤔), he started using his right hand with the glove way more often, even to the point you could guess he’s right-handed and nothing else.

In conclusion: We got several left-handed characters in The Promised Neverland, but only one (know) being ambidextrous, Yuugo.

Or maybe I’m just pouring too many thoughts into this topic, who knows?

Yuugo and Rin, 25, for the ask

I wasn't sure how you feel about AUs and divergences, so I made this canon compliant: younger Yuugo and Rin, having an adventure together.

"Yuugo, why are you crying?"

Yuugo sniffled. Rin looked at him with the mix of pity and exasperation her best friend often provoked. He was one of the sweetest people she'd ever met and she cared for him deeply, but the fact remained that his problems were, at least half the time, the result of something he'd done to himself.

"Come on," she told him. "I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong."

"I don't think you can help," Yuugo said through his tears. "I don't think anyone can."

"Try me," she suggested.

He sniffled again and tried to pull himself together.

"You know how Haseo got those new cards?" he asked.

Rin knew. Getting new cards was such a rarity that it generally caused talk among the children in the orphanage for days afterwards. This latest batch had been a windfall: a couple of boxes of booster packs had fallen off a truck when it hit a pothole and a door had shaken loose. Someone had scrounged them for the children to play with, and everyone at the orphanage had gotten a few packs. It had been better than Christmas. But Haseo was the lucky one, because one of his packs had contained a rare card, making Haseo the celebrity of the moment. Luckily, Haseo was a good natured boy, or all the attention might have gone to his head.

"Well, I got into an argument with some of those guys who run with the gangs on Short Street," Yuugo went on. "They challenged me to a duel today, and Haseo offered to let me borrow some of his cards so I'd be sure to win."

Rin began to see where this was going. The Short Street gang was, in her opinion, nothing but a bunch of juvenile delinquents, a pack of losers who spent more time trying to convince people of how tough they were than actually doing anything worth mentioning. In this part of town, even committing actual crimes might have gotten them some respect, if they'd committed them against the right people, but the Short Street gang seemed to think that picking on orphaned kids was about their speed.

"Did you win?" she asked.

"Of course I won!" Yuugo huffed. "You think I'd let them beat me? But they saw what kind of cards I was using and started pushing me to hand them over, which I wouldn't have even if they had been mine. So then they started trying to take them by force..."

"And now they've stolen Haseo's cards," Rin concluded.

Yuugo shook his head. "Nah. If they'd done that, I'd just go and steal 'em back. But they were making noise and I was yelling and we were kind of, you know, scuffling, and Security showed up and said we were fighting. They arrested some of the Short Street guys and took the cards as evidence."

Rin winced. She knew what that meant in real life terms: the Security men had taken the cards and would doubtless either keep them for themselves or sell them for a profit. Either way, Haseo was never going to see them again.

"So now I'm stuck," said Yuugo. "If I go and tell Haseo what happened, he'll be upset and he'll never loan me his stuff again, but if I go after the Security guys, I'll just get in even more trouble. I might even get arrested! There's no way to win this!"

Rin thought about the matter for a bit.

"Maybe," she said. "Can you help me get some stuff? Not steal," she added quickly. "But I need my good dress, and some of Matron's makeup and stuff."

"I can probably do that," said Yuugo. The dress was to impress potential adopters, kept in storage most of the time, so she wouldn't get it dirty, but getting it down from the attic was no great challenge. Borrowing some of the matron's costume jewelry would be a bit more of a challenge, but it was still well within Yuugo's range. "What do you need it for?"

"To look respectable," said Rin. "Don't worry. Just leave everything to me."

Rin waited and watched. For the past few blocks, she had been stalking the Security officers who had taken Yuugo's borrowed cards. She hated to just stand by and watch them while they hassled the people of her neighborhood, most of whom were nice people whose only crime was to be born on the wrong side of town, but she didn't dare intervene. If she jumped the gun and acted too soon, her act probably wouldn't come off, but if she took her eyes off these men for even a moment, she might never find them again. All she could do was creep along through shadows and over rooftops, holding the hem of her dress in one hand to prevent it picking up even the smallest smudge of dirt.

At last, they reached the edge of what Rin might have considered her territory: the place where the slums she had grown up in began to give way to more respectable neighborhoods. She made sure of which way her targets were going, and then hurried around the block so she could be seen coming back in the other direction. She looked around, feigning worry, then brightened as she let her gaze fall on the Security men.

"Oh, thank goodness!" she cried, hurrying towards them. "Please, officers, I need your help!"

The officers looked at her, and she looked up at them with her most appealing look. She had to admit, Yuugo had done sterling work. He'd filched a lipstick and some nail polish, as well as some hair clips and a pearl necklace. With his help, she'd managed to turn herself into a reasonable facsimile of a pampered rich girl whose whims should be taken seriously.

"What can we do for you, little lady?" one of them asked.

"I was playing in the park with some of my friends," she said, allowing a quaver to creep into her voice, "and some rough men came and stole some of my cards. Can you help me get them back, please?"

She looked at them appealingly. Maybe it was because she was genuinely concerned, but they seemed to believe her act.

"Can you describe these cards, Miss?" asked the officer who seemed to be in charge.

Rin nodded. Yuugo had given her the extensive list. He might be a bit airheaded in some areas of his life, but he had an excellent memory when it came to the cards he'd been playing. When she was done with her recitation, the officer nodded.

"Well, you're in luck," he said. "We caught some hoods fighting each other and one of them had your cards on him."

He reached into his pocket, beginning to take them out, but his partner stopped him.

"Wait," he said. "How do you know she's telling the truth? She could be in league with them!"

"What are you talking about?" the other officer replied. "Just look at her! Those are real pearls she's wearing! Her nail polish isn't even chipped, and you think she could be one of those delinquents? You need to get your eyes checked."

Rin managed to coax out a sob and rubbed at her eyes. "How can you say I'm one of those awful people? That's mean!"

"Hey, hey, don't cry!" said the second officer, sounding frantic. He fumbled a handkerchief out of his pocket and offered it to her. "I didn't mean it, really. Anyone can see you're a very respectable young lady."

Rin dabbed at her eyes with the handkerchief. The other officer offered her the cards, counting them all out carefully.

"Thank you so much!" she said. She gave them each a hug, thinking to herself that she was going to have to wash this dress before she washed it again. Still, it was important to keep up the act. She waved to them both as she skipped away and made herself vanish back around the corner.

A few minutes later, she was climbing back over the orphanage fence. Yuugo was waiting for her there.

"You were gone a long time," he said, as he hustled her back inside to change. "Did it go okay?"

"No problem!" she assured him, flaunting the cards. She grinned. "And I stole a Security officer's handkerchief."

"Awesome," said Yuugo. He gazed at her with idol worship in his eyes. "But I bet it wouldn't have worked if you weren't so pretty."

She blushed. "It was just the dress and stuff. Anyone could have done it."

"If they were brave and smart enough," said Yuugo. "<I>And</I> pretty. And there's nobody as smart and pretty and brave as you."

He really means it, she thought. She turned away, trying to hide how warm her face was becoming.

"Come on," she said. "Help me get rid of this stuff before Matron comes in and notices."

He helped her out of her borrowed finery, and then he scampered off to put everything back where it belonged. She pulled her day clothes back on and flopped back onto her bed. Now that it was all over, she felt drained.

Stupid Yuugo, she thought, smiling a little. Imagine getting himself into such a fix! All the same, it had been kind of fun, pulling the wool over those officers' eyes. Somehow, life was always fun when Yuugo was around. Lying there drowsing, she could only think to herself that if she stuck with Yuugo, her life would be nothing but adventures.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'd be dead. There's nothing deep about it, I'd be dead ahah. It's not even about wits, look- “answer a question within ten seconds”? I'd be lucky if my anxiety and adhd allowed me to just understand the question within ten seconds. If I didn't die like that, I'd probably set myself on fire to allow others to escape. If I didn't die like that, I'd definitely somehow get myself killed to save the others. Either way I'd be dead. Living is hard ahah.

That is if I was born in GF. If I was born in another farm and later shipped to GP... I don't know, I was going to say that I would try to fight to survive, but truth to be told I have very bad stress management and if I found myself in such context I would probably let myself be killed by poachers. I mean c'mon, who wants to live in that world. Also bonus points for the fact that being killed by poachers automatically makes me save one child, since the number of children they hunt every day is fixed.

(Ok this got very depressing very fast ahah. I hope you'll appreciate the honesty tho?)

It's hard to say what relationship I would have with the others because... Right now I'm older than they are, and it's difficult to think about them any differently than #instant adoption. Maybe I would bond with some of the oldest GP kids because we're similar in ages? I can imagine getting along well with Oliver because both of us would be older siblings who would do anything to protect their big family ahah.

No child would ever be my enemy because? They're freaking kids, they can't even answer for their actions. I would probably have interactions with them of this kind:

That's also why I think he's the character I better understand the thought process of. But look- Ray has found a reason to live and not give up, right? So there's hope for me as well. The first character I fell in love with: Norman. I saw that baby saying "good morning" in chapter 1 and I adopted him

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: probably Don. At first I only saw him as a comic relief character without a personality but after getting to know him better I can now say that I would die for him. fucking adorable cinnamon roll

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: There really isn't many characters I don't like in Tpn but maybe Lewis? I know a lot of ppl loved him (and even simped for him-) but I never really liked him ew

The character I love that everyone else hates: PETER RATRI. I cried for him. I loved his character arc and I think he's one of the best Tpn villains with a deep backstory and not just "the Rat" as everyone in the fandom calls him :'D

“We Were Born”

So, this special chapter was.. nothing like I expected when we first learned about getting another extra TPN chapter? I was hoping for more backstory on another character, like the last three extra chapters gave us, but this new one was completely different (and a tiny bit of a let down if i can be honest?). I know placing this in the usual tag might throw people off, since literally no one from TPN shows up in said chapter (aside from Emma on the cover) but since it's done by Shirai & Demizu and is considered to be a pilot chapter to the series itself, I'm gonna chat about it anyway.

As you would expect, the world in this chapter is also unforgiving. There are no demons to be seen here, but civil wars that last centuries, where it’s the people themselves who kill each other. “Violence and criminals rule the city. Could you believe such a place exist on Earth?” (even though this place is fictional as well but.. *glances at Roanapur* yeah, i can believe it.) All joking aside, I think that this harsh world could parallel the human world in which Peter Ratri and Alex talk about in TPN ch173 & ch180 respectively.

Okay, so for our characters now.. is it me, or does Rita remind anyone else of Emma? I mean, I understand that's the whole point and probably why the two of them were on the cover together, but come on, look at that smile of hers! Even the eyes are like Emma's. The whole idea of living in foster care and how useful Rita strives to be towards others are obvious comparisons as well.

And Leo has, of course, jumped his way straight into my heart and no doubt earns his place there by the end of this chapter. This man just gives me serious Yuugo vibes and I'm all for it.

Honestly though, not only do I see similarities between Leo and Yuugo, but with Ray as well. The three of them are fully aware that the world they're living in is hell but as a sort of sole survivor among their family and friends, they question their own lives as they're tormented by those very people they lost.

As the focus moves back to Rita, we're faced with a very familiar reveal, but the truth still managed to shock me nonetheless. The man who wanted to adopt Rita only considered doing so in hopes to save Margo's life, his own daughter, with the help of Rita's organs. This setup reminds me heavily of the movie “The Island,” and you don't know of it, I'll give a quick summary. In the movie, the people live in an isolated community and are told the outside world is too dangerous to live in, with the exception of one island. Occasionally, one person is chosen via a lottery to leave the safe community and go live on this island to have a normal, free life away from everyone else.. forever. We later find out that these people are nothing but the clones of wealthy sponsors, who plan to use them for their own organ transplants, surrogate motherhood and other medical reasons, because who else would be a better compatible match other than yourself, right? So “winning the lottery” means these clones are essentially being lead to their own deaths instead. Hurray for false hope!

And as we would expect, Father is completely aware of this and enjoys revealing the truth to Rita way too much. I don't want to say he's the male counterpart of Isabella (because i actually love that woman and she's redeemed herself) but yeah, you see their roles are one in the same when it comes to being honest at least.

But Father also reminds me of Peter, especially here. I instantly thought of that one panel from TPN ch172 when he's like “An idiot! She’s an idiot!” So this goes without saying, but I hate both of them.

Leo on the other hand.. oohh, I simply love him! Go ahead and tell me those words of his wouldn't be perfect for Ray. Or Yuugo. Hell, literally anyone Emma saved could say this and I would cherish it just the same.

I'm genuinely sad this chapter will probably never be adapted into anything because I would love to see this man animated.

AND THIS ENTIRE SCENE! None of the TPN cast may be included anywhere in this story but the essence of the full-score trio is on full display here! Norman when Rita says she wants to live, Emma when Leo speaks about life's meaning and making your own choices, and Ray when Leo promises to live and even kicking down the door.

The chapter ends decent enough I guess. Father is seen limping away, so it’s fair to say Leo beat him up pretty good, which is fantastic. Leo stays alive after saving Rita, who appears to be helping other children. We see Margo too, and since Rita is off on her own, it sort of implies that Margo is still ill and won't live long. She doesn't seem upset by it at all though, since she overheard the conversation between Leo and Rita about living, Margo decides her meaning to life will be to write a story, which most likely alludes to TPN itself.

(hmm, no tpn backstory in sight and yet i still managed to ramble on quite a bit about this chapter. surprising. can we count that banner as a slight emma cameo though? because i am.)

my opinion on the tpn adopted siblings, we dont know how the other kids grew up together. Emma constantly calls them her siblings, so we know her view. But when isabella grew up on her farm, we dont know if they were raised to think of the others as their siblings aswell, same about lucas and yuugo.

Romantic feelings between characters is not a foreign concept in TPN, and it really annoys me when people get genuinely angry at fans who ship characters together. If shipping these characters isn’t something you feel comfortable with or want to do that’s totally fine! But there is a reason why so many people ship different characters in the series, and it’s not because they like incest ships--they genuinely don’t interpret certain character’s relationships that way. Below the cut, I’ve attempted to highlight why I think shipping these characters is largely a nonissue.

Canonically, we know that Norman loves Emma in a romantic way and there is a good amount of contextual and subtextual clues which point towards Emma feeling the same way about Norman (even if she is not aware of it yet). For me personally, I cannot view the relationship between these two as simply sibling love. Norman does not view Emma as a sister.

You would have to write an entire meta in order to accurately cover the scope of their relationship because it is quite central to the story (or, at least, Norman’s character, as it dictates the actions he makes) but here are some other, quick examples I wanted to include.

The way they cling to each other:

Norman is also very fond of cradling Emma’s face:

Norman being the one to drag Emma back to life after Leuvis impales her. She sees Isabella and her family as well, but Norman is separate from them which seems to suggest that she, at least subconsciously, views him differently:

To me it is very evident that they are not “siblings”, y’know?

I think you could make a case for Ray and Emma being just sibling love, but I also think you could make just as strong of a case for it not being sibling love. This one is very much up to the reader’s interpretation as it is not explicitly stated as being either, and is heavily based on subtext.

We also know that Yuugo loved Dina romantically

In addition to it being explicitly stated, we also see that Dina’s name is the only name underlined on Yuugo’s wall, showing that she was more significant than the others in some way. Also, when the Glory Bell gang is finally reunited in the afterlife, Dina cradles Yuugo in her arms and he grasps onto her like a lifeline.

As for the ship of Yuugo and Lucas, I don’t think there is really much canonical basis for it, but it is my favorite ship of the series regardless simply because I am a sucker for ships between two completely broken people who learn how to love again through each other and the “Team Mom, Team Dad” dynamic T.T I think there is so much potential for exploration between these two characters and endless fanon content to be created.

As for how the Glory Bell kids view each other, this might just be a translation thing, but Yuugo exclusively (or nearly, exclusively) refers to the group as his “friends”, though I do think the GB kids felt like they were a family.

Isabella likely loved Leslie romantically.

I say likely because it isn’t explicitly clear what kind of love it is, but I’m highly banking on it being a romantic love, because 1.) She refers to Leslie separately than her home/family in these panels. 2.) the two character’s for Ray’s name ( レイ ) are made of the first characters of Leslie and Isabella’s names (Leslie: レスリ , Isabella: イザベラ) 3.) She carries Leslie with her everyday through his song and lives on for his sake

The editor of the manga ships Anna and Ray, and Shirai and Posuka say that they purposefully left Ray/Emma and Norman/Emma ambiguous and up to interpretation. (I don’t have the receipts for this unfortunately because I was stupid and didn’t think to save them but I swear I’ve seen this confirmed, if someone has screenshots pls send them to me so I can add them here c: )

The point stands though that none of these characters are blood related, some of them view the others as siblings and some of them view them not as siblings. Plus, it’s fiction and, as Shirai and Posuka have said, it’s up to interpretation. Again, ship what you want or don’t ship at all. I just wanted to explain a bit about why I don’t understand why people think it is weird for others to romantically ship these characters together (not saying that you do this, of course, you sent a very polite message thank you :> )

Ray all the way. His character arc, the way he changes throughout the story, his interactions with other characters and the constant, underlying pain in him catched my heart really soon and makes me think of him so often. Truly a blorbo ❤️

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)

Zazie. I can‘t describe it properly but this 2m tall five year old boy catched my eye and heart the second he appeared in the manga. I only wished we could learn more about him and how he does now in the human world.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)

Ayshe and Zack. Ayshe because she‘s awesome, got a wonderful design and interesting backstory as well as a complicated history with the heroes we never really witnessed cleared up, and Zack because he was the only adult on the search for Cuvitidala with a bunch of kids – the potencial we never got to see! Additionally, he was part of Lucas‘ original adopted children and that makes him just as special as Oliver, who we got to learn way more about.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)

James Ratri. When he finally got his anime debut I screamed internally (and sadly to others ears, externally too). Just look at him and tell me what's wrong with my weird obsession for this very dead guy 😭

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)

Yuugo. He‘s truly the most pathetic character in the whole series. I can love him dearly the one second and get major second hand emberassment for this guy and I think that‘s wonderful.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)

Peter Ratri. Put him in the plinko and let him fall down forever. He deserves it.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)

By the way, thank you for writing the Can You Hear the Sea fic and Giver fic (those two are my favorites!)

Wow thanks ! (^^)/ I’m honoured to be trusted enough to give fic recommandations ! I mostly choose my authors currently, so I will do something similar here.

@piperemerald : (Piper_Emerald on Ao3), Mostly Norray. One of my favorite authors in the fandom! She planifies everything in her fics, which means you are guaranteed to have a good and smooth reading, I once got so caught up in one of her works that I missed my subway station. Incredible writing, but most importantly very good characterization, all her characters feel human and real (which is something I appreciate a lot). I would love to just recommend all of her fics right on the stop but it would be too long, so I’ll simply select a few ones.

Falling For Your Voice (Norman/Ray, rated M, Emma/Violet and Yuugo/Lucas as backgrounds ships) : Modern Life AU where Norman is a renowned singer and Ray a famous but anonymous writer, the both falling in love with each other through the words in their works. What I said about the author is still the same, incredible writing style, amazing characterization, at the same time funyt, tender, and kind of heartbreaking too. It was the first fic I read from her and I have no regrets. 11 chapters of pure bliss. I want to also precise that, while rated M, there’s no explicit sex scenes despite having mentions of it. And all characters are aged-up of course.

An Hour To Midnight (Norman/Ray, rated T) : Coffee Shop AU. I... Don't really have nothing more to say to describe the work. I want to spoil as less as possible because there’s a ton of little details that I love in this one-shot. It’s a coffee shop au, but a really good one. One of my favorite work by the author. If I only have to say one thing to recommend it: Ray is dislexic and I live for that.

Now, I will stop there for Piper_Emerald, but I could also recommend Language Barrier and Pomegrenate Seed as well as Cursed and In The Next Mile too. All Norray. And all amazings. But this time I prefer to let you check by yourself.

Now then , to our next author: @justanotherbnhalover (hi) (7FlyingPancakes7 on Ao3), like previously, mostly Norray. No, I don’t have a bias because we get along, I sincerely love her fics a lot. It depends on the fic more this time, but I particularly adores the AUs she makes and the universes she creates around it, they are not just good fics, but good stories too. Her writing style is amazing, able to capture every little thought of her characters like she is putting us in their heads (not excluding intrusive thoughts too). The writing style is what captivates me a lot too, she just creates sentences that makes you shiver.

To Die For (Norman/Ray, rated M for… explicit reasons) : What can you do when a serial killer falls in love with you? THIS FIC. THIS FIC. I have a personal history with fanfics depicting unhealthy relationships, and THIS FIC is awesome. Not only its a clear example of how far the author can go with writing intrusive thoughts, but also a great thriller. Will Ray discover that Norman is the killer? Or will Norman manage to fool the person he loves for his whole life? WHO KNOWS. The fic isn’t finished yet, but I would recommend you to read it anyway.

This Song Is For You (Norman/Ray, rated T) : Mermaid AU where Mermaid Norman gets charmed by Ray’s singing. A very interesting take on a Mermaid AU ! But it’s not just the context, the story itself is good. Unlike other fics, it’s not as mystery centered as others, but the Mermaid universe is enough to get completely into it. Not only that, but again, a very good writing, and as funny as always too... I love Mermaid stories so be prepared yourself to be given more.

Now, I could’ve recommended other fics, but TSIFY is the only finished Mermaid fic (hence why I recommended it) and I wanted to propose something else besides Smile (While You Can), though I still recommend it too.

Another author (and finally not Norray, at least I’ll choose some that are not Norray) @amaikana ! (hi) (amaitori on Ao3 for non explicit works). Very productive author ! ... Does not finish their multi-chapters fic a lot though. (Think of them as this book entirely made of first chapters). But every single one-shots are a ray of light in the darkness (mostly because some of them are very funny). Is mostly focused on slice of life short stories, so it’s also nice to take a break from all those angsty fics! I would categorize her as the “feel good” author. There’s some angsty stuff, but the majority of the works are mostly fluff.

Blue Eyes (Gen, rated G, some Rayemma on te side but nothing more) : Cute stories about Ray and his new adopted brother Norman. A serie of cute one-shots with Norman being 6 years old and Ray 10. Like I said, very good to feel good, it’s adorable, it’s funny, and it’s about kids.

Chance Among the Stars (Norman/Emma, rated T, Ray and Norman are biological brothers) Fate/Stay Night Heaven’s Feel AU. It’s more than just because I am a Fate fan, but this fic is genuinely one of her best works. It’s filled with emotions and magical lores and it’s cool as hell. Also, I like angst.

And that’s it because those are mostly really short one-shots or series of one-shots so... it’s better to see for yourself ! :D (Also lots of OT3 to my joy).

Now, we will go into the territory of fics that I read without checking the author’s other works a lot. It’s not that I dislike the author’s other works, let’s just stay I mostly remember the fic (and only started to do it by author recently too).

I got a ticket to another world (Norman/Ray, rated T, written by heismysoulmate) : Norman adopts a very strange cat. A cool fantastic one-shot and a cool short story overall. The characters are interesting, and the relationship development is good.

pushing youth to the limits (Norman/Emma/Ray, not rated but definitely M, written by sugacookies_with_tae) : A cleptomaniac, a murderess and a depressive on a road trip. It’s what I’ll say to summarize the plot, because if you’re like me, you’ll think “wow, it’s either really good or really bad, I’m going to read it”. Spoiler: it’s good, it’s good in the type “who cares?”. I don’t know how to describe it, it’s just a bunch of fucked up kids trying to live and it’s somehow interesting? Wow. (Also, if its plot comes from a K-pop music video. I watched it, and uh... actually don’ t. It’s not that the music is bad or the clip is bad, it’s just that you might try to compare it to the fic, and I honestly prefer to just enjoy the story.)

love me like you do (Ray/Emma, rated T, written by isshun) : Actors AU. I don’t know what else I have to say to describe it, it’s just good. The author alternates between the actors living their life and what people say on the internet with very realistic tweets. It’s super cute and very nice, and slow-burn too. A very good one-shot overall.

Deep Blue (Norman/Ray (YES AGAIN), rated T, written by NanamiChiLovesYou) : Mermaid AU, Little Mermaid AU, Ray, a mermaid, transforms himself into a human in order to find a way to protect his family who still lives under the sea. This fic has awaken a lot of us to Mermaids, and for good reasons. It’s very good. The whole transformation thing is perfectly executed, all characters are intersting... And it’s unifinshed (*goes sobbing in a corner*). But it doesn’t matter, because it’s just awesome ! Unlike with TSIFY, the universe is less developed in order to focus more on the characters and their interactions, which definitely gives another vibe.
