Hi there, I hope you are having a great day/night! I just wanted to say that I love the way you write Eloise. You portray her character beyond perfectly! 🥰 I can’t help but be my gay little lesbian self for her witty and sarcastic attitude.
I would be eternally grateful to you if you could please write an A-Z relationship post about her. You wrote such brilliant ones for the bridgerton brothers, I’d love to read one of El.
Relationship A - Z: Eloise Bridgerton x Reader
A/N: Um, of course - I’d love to do that? Thank you so much for giving me an excuse to sit down and actually write this. And also, thank you for your incredibly lovely and kind comments. I know people say it a lot, but it genuinely does mean the world to know my writing is being enjoyed by people - especially when it comes to my fellow LGBTQ+ peeps. This comment has left me smiling all day... Hope you enjoy! 💕
Tumblr media
----
a - actions. what sort of things do they do to show they love their s.o?
She acts at ease with you, which is the clearest sign to all that she loves you. It’s like how a *spicy* cat suddenly acts like an innocent kitten around their owner, whilst simultaneously looking at everyone else like they’re plotting your demise.
Eloise never usually lets her guard down, not even around her family, which is why it means so much to you that she sits close to you, rather than pushes you away. That she immediately offers you a chocolate from the box she’s eating, whilst swatting her siblings’ hands away. That she listens when you say something, even if she doesn’t agree, rather than making some sassy remark or shutting you down as she does most people.
She also apologies to you when she’s wrong - something you once heard Colin swear would never happen, not until hell froze over.
She always supports you, as well. No matter what, she will be there, ready to fight anyone who has upset you or even so much as disagreed with you - consequences be damned. She is ride or die, and her fierce loyalty makes you feel very loved.
b - beginnings. how did the relationship begin? how has it changed?
I feel you would intrigue her, when you first met. Whether it’s your shared interests, your outspoken nature, or even perhaps your willingness to call her out … you would have to catch her attention somehow, and be deemed worthy of her time, regardless of whether you met as children or as grown women.
Also, Eloise probably wouldn’t acknowledge, or even understand that she was falling in love with you. Not at first. It would keep building and growing until she wakes one night and it hits her like a lightning bolt. She can’t live without you - and not just as a friend, but as someone who is her other half. Her partner. Her equal.
After that revelation, it’s a matter of mustering up the courage to actually tell you how she feels, and allow herself to risk the possibility you do not feel the same.
c - comfortable. how comfy are they with each other? peeing with the door open or closed? or would they rather keep the mystery?
Eloise would probably be more reserved at first. After all, old habits die hard and being a Bridgerton - one of seven at that - has made her used to maintaining a sense of privacy, lest she risk her siblings mocking her or exposing her to some embarrassment at the worst possible time.
It would take her a while to realise she doesn’t have to be that way anymore, nor does she have to maintain the wall she keeps in place to protect herself from the outside world. She can be entirely herself with you and knows you won’t abuse her for it.
d - dates. do they consider dates to be important? what kind do they prefer?
Dates are important for Eloise, but in a different way to her siblings. After all, she can spend time with you whenever she chooses, but it’s the thought behind the activity organised that means so much, rather than the activity itself. It’s a chance for you two to show how much you know about one another, and to have a new adventure together- whether it be sneaking your way into a talk about Mary Wollenstonecraft after you told Eloise how much you’d enjoyed reading her work, or letting Eloise teach you how to shoot so she has someone not actually afraid of competing with her (unlike her cowardly brothers - her words).
e - engagement. how would they propose? who would even pop the question?
Depending on your gender, you would propose if you were a man - but not until she informed you that she was ready to receive such a proposal. She’d also probably tell you exactly how to do it, even if she knows you’ll likely go rogue and surprise her for the satisfaction of keeping her on her toes.
However, if you are female, I think it could go either way. You’d definitely discuss marriage, or at least permanent companionship - and again neither of you would pop the question until you knew the other wanted you to.
f - fundamental. for them, what is the most fundamental part of a relationship?
Respect. Respect for one another, with neither feeling the inferior or the superior where possible. You are partners in everything and the comfort that brings you both allows your relationship to flourish. It means listening, trusting, and being considerate of one another and your feelings.
g - gratitude. how do they show their appreciation for you?
As I say, Eloise is a ride or die kind of person and makes no secret of it. She is constantly grateful to have found someone just as committed as she is, and does not take it for granted. She is keen to thank you verbally whenever you do something, and to leave you notes around the place expressing her joy and gratitude that you’re in her life. They’re often in code, in case someone else finds them first - but that’s part of the fun, knowing the two of you have a secret means of communicating.
h - home. a random domestic headcanon.
After sharing a room - and a house - with her many siblings for so long, Eloise takes great pride in personalising her own space. It’s just another means of exercising the control she has so longed for, which is why you permit her to collect and display whatever ornaments or items she wishes - even if she has questionable taste, as the slightly demonic looking bird (you think it’s a bird) on the mantle piece proves.
She also enjoys having a house full, so will often invite Penelope and Colin, and Benedict and Sophie, (and all their offspring) to come join you. She enjoys the chaos, and trying to corral them into performing theatricals for the entire gathering (something you all get roped into in some way or another).
i - infinite. do they believe their love is endless, or is there something that could break it?
With several siblings, and Penelope, happily married before her, I think Eloise knows how powerful love can be. However, with what happened with her mother and Francesca, I think Eloise knows life can be fleeting and that love should be cherished - even if she spends a long time being afraid of letting herself be vulnerable enough, and risking the possibility of being hurt as a result.
Tumblr media
However, once she finds you, and realises how much better her world is for you being in it, she understands why people let themselves be vulnerable. Her world is better for the love you bring, regardless of how much time you two may have to enjoy it.
j - jokes. who's the funny one?
Her. 100%. She’s endlessly sarcastic and has a witty remark prepared at all times - a fact that has caused you to snort into your tea or glass of champagne more than once when in polite company.
It only gets worse when she and Benedict are in the same room. You half think, in another life, they’d have had a fine career together on the stage.
k - kiss. how do they kiss? favourite type?
Eloise secretly loves when you decide to kiss her in a bid to silence her from talking, whether it be in an argument or if she is rambling - as she is prone to do. It’s rather effective, to be honest, and the way she blushes afterwards is adorable.
When it comes to returning the favour, Eloise prefers giving you short, gentle kisses, normally when she enters or exits a room. They come so easily and naturally, that she does them without even thinking. She enjoys being able to be affectionate with you, and to demonstrate her love for you - especially when the others are around. There is nothing quite so funny as watching her go from being soft when pecking your cheek or lips, only to whirl and sass whichever sibling is vexing her.
l - longing. who's the clingy one? how are they with long distance?
Surprisingly, I think Eloise would be the clingy one. We’ve seen in the books how she acts when her family and friends start to marry off and disappear.
She’s very social, and is the kind of person that, once she loves someone, she loves deeply and whole heartedly. You become important to her, and therefore she struggles if you’re not there. She’d write to you every day if you had to leave her for a while - even if it was only a few days.
m - marriage. do they wanna get married?
Depending on your gender this may or may not be a possibility for you. However, Eloise isn’t exactly desperate to race you down the aisle anyway, so it wouldn’t be such an issue at first. True, as time goes by, she’d probably start to envy the way her siblings get to claim their lover as theirs, and finally agrees to getting married. (Ultimately, she can concede that those women that are married do tend to have more social freedoms than unmarried, so if anything it is an advantageous move on her part…or so she says when asked by her siblings…)
She would at least wish commemorate your union with some kind of symbol - be it a ring or just getting to sign her name on a piece of paper. Just something to solidify the fact that she has something special of her own, with someone worthy of her. It doesn't matter whether that's in a chapel in London, or privately between the pair of you in some far off European city.
n - nicknames. what ones do they like?
El. Eloise. My love. Just anything not too insipid, nor - heaven forbid - her full name. Just as her mother did when she was small, calling her by her full title is a sure signal she is in, or about to be in, trouble.
o - over the top. are they ever ott? or are they more low-key?
She’s a Bridgerton, so of course the answer is yes. She can be loud, dramatic, and doesn’t care what anyone outside of her family thinks of her but that’s part of her charm and one of the many reasons you fell in love with her. She’s also less OTT in comparison to some of her family, but you love them all dearly and treasure the fact that your life will certainly never be boring in their company.
p - picture. what's their favourite picture of them and their s.o?
One more relaxed, rather than a formal portrait. It would be something like a casual sketch done by a street artist, of the pair of you, in the park on a warm summer day. It’s the first one Eloise claims she truly recognises herself in, seeing her true self shining through, compared to all the forced and frivolous paintings she’s stood for as part of her family’s wishes.
q - quintessential. what is one thing they would refuse to compromise in their relationship? what's a deal-breaker for them?
Respect. Plain and simple. You are both individual people with equally important thoughts and feelings. Together you make a team, but she is one half of that and if you can’t acknowledge that then she has no time for you.
r - rage. who is the most likely to start an argument?
… Eloise. Do I even need to answer that? She’s just so hot tempered and hard headed that she finds herself starting rows, even if she doesn’t mean to. However, the one thing about her you can always rely upon is her willingness to apologise as soon as she’s cooled down enough to realise her error. She’s also surprisingly forgiving if you do ever start a row.. but you can bet she’s kept a tally of who won on a scrap of paper somewhere.
s - sickness. who gets sick most often? what are they like when they’re sick?
I don’t think Eloise would get sick more than a usual amount. However, I feel she is the stubborn kind of person who denies being ill until she physically cannot any longer - especially if one of her siblings is first to remark upon it. Then, she’ll insist nothing is wrong and try to carry on as normal… until she ends up passing out somewhere or almost coughing up a lung. Then she quickly gives in to your tender care and allows you to shepherd her to bed, even if she says she’ll be right as rain by the morning.
t - tattoo. would they ever get matching tattoos with their s.o, or a tattoo for them?
No, not given the time period. If this was modern Eloise, then possibly as an act of rebellion. However, not in Bridgerton as it is.
u - understanding. how understanding are they? or are they a little difficult?
Eloise can be very difficult, but that doesn't mean she isn't willing to understand something. It might take her a while, and patience on your part, when explaining something or trying to convince her to see something from someone’s else's way of thinking. However, she more often than not will come around and at least consider another way of viewing things - even if she still (deep down) believes her way to be superior or correct.
v - vases. do they buy flowers?
I don’t think she is overly fond of them herself but if you like them then she’ll have some grown for you in the garden - or in the greenhouse 😅 (I’m trying to avoid a Philip joke here hehe)
w - wandering. do they wanna travel? or immediately settle down?
Eloise would wish to explore. After all, being with a companion or married both allow women greater freedoms - something she’s longed for. So you can bet she has her bags packed as soon as possible, ready to explore and see the world far away from London and the rigidity of the Ton. That, and no one will know who you are which is the ultimate freedom of all.
x - ex. how many exes do they have? any horror stories?
Eloise doesn’t really have horror stories as she doesn’t really have any exes. True, she has tales of the suitors she has sent packing, most of which are highly amusing (especially when Penelope or Benedict re-enact the tales for you). She also has Theo (if you’re going off the tv series) but I feel you’d understand the pain that that brought her, as her first genuine romantic relationship. It also showed her that it was alright to love and that there are people out there worthy of risking the hurt for.
y - you. favourite thing about their partner?
Your spirit. Let’s be real, you'd have to have a strong one to engage with Eloise Bridgerton, but also the world in general. She loves how you aren't afraid to stand up to her or tell her when she’s in the wrong, just as you are willing to fight off anyone who has anything remotely bad to say about Eloise or yourself. You know who you are and you know what you want from the world and you aren't afraid to go out there and take it.
z - zeal. how excitable are they? who's the calm one?
Oh, Eloise is the excitable one - even if she’d deny it. She’s a veritable ball of energy and doesn't seem able to stay still for very long. There’s just too much to see and do, and so little time.
Also, once you meet the rest of the Bridgerton bunch you realise that it isn't that much of a surprise really. If anything, she’s one of the calmer of the lot... and that’s saying something.

Yesterday left us with the promise of some truly stupid shit (the best kind) and today's episode delivers on that promise!
Paulina discovers that Abe — her husband of almost exactly one year, the mayor of Salem and recent amnesia victim — is missing. In true Paulina fashion, her reaction to this is to flail her limbs for awhile and yell at everyone around her.
What happened to you, Paulina? You used to be cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kayla and Marlena have lunch together at the pub. Marlena asks about this alleged virus outbreak she heard about at the hospital and quickly realizes that, since this information came from Nicole, it must have been a lie. Kayla, ever the professional, does not tell her old friend what she knows about Nicole because of HIPAA and just... you know, basic ethics. Good job, Kayla!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Nicole and her lies, Eric confronts the former about the latter and gets confirmation about her pregnancy. So now, including Marlena (who has almost certainly worked out what's happening based on the clues she has), that's like 8 people who know about this and are not EJ (one of the baby's potential fathers.) I'm sure he's going to feel great about all of this when it inevitably comes out.
Eric, for his part, reacts with kindness and compassion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at the hospital, Sloan yells at Rafe for letting her brother get away. Then Rafe yells at her because somehow — still! — this is all Sloan's fault(?!)
Tumblr media
The brother in question is escaping via the only exterior location in Salem that isn't the town square. This is either a pleasant park where you can take your kids or it's the seedy bad part of town where you can get stabbed to death. It really depends on what episode you're in!
There, Colin runs into Leo, who mistakes him for one of the Hot Cops (no, seriously) and makes about 30 dick jokes before realizing who Colin really is. Then he remembers he works for a newspaper and tries to get an exclusive story, or "scoop," but Colin the psychotic, girlfriend -abusing attempted murderer doesn't take kindly to this idea for some reason(?!?!)
Then Leo just says the word "penis," in case all of that other extremely subtle material got past you, and Colin leaves in disgust. Finally I have something in common with this guy!
Tumblr media
Nurse Kim Coles drags Abe back to her home, where she continues the ruse that she's definitely his loving wife, Paulina. She introduces him to her stuffed cats, which is a sure sign that she's nuts since, as TLo pointed out, the show could not possibly afford to rent this many actual cats to make that point.
Honestly, I'm impressed they even did this much. I'll be very curious to see how they repurpose these props to get their money's worth in the coming months. And if you think I'm being unfair there, might I remind you that the Duke the Bear costume made a fresh appearance only weeks ago?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abe, for his part, has some fucking amazing reactions to all of this.
Tumblr media
Back at the hospital, Paulina does what she does best (yells at Rafe) and panic-attacks herself right into a hospital bed herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicole calls Kayla to say she has the DNA swab she needs and Kayla agrees to just cut her lunch short with Marlena so she can run to the hospital and get the test going. This is the chief of surgery at a hospital that, per this very episode, has at least ten floors. And this is not even factoring in that Kayla was recently dead. Surely there's someone else who can do this.
And then — and then! — Nicole has the audacity to ask how long it's going to take to get the results.
Tumblr media
Sloan bumps into Leo, who informs her that her brother just went thataway and also would you mind standing here while I make some more dick jokes?
Sloan would mind doing that, it turns out.
Tumblr media
Then Nicole returns to the ancestral home of the DiMeras, where EJ says some extremely kind and compassionate things. And she entirely fails to tell him about the baby she's carrying that might be his. Again. Still.

I feel like I spent the whole of October in a reading slump. This is 30% because I overdid the fantasy in September, 30% because I wanted dark, deep books but didn’t have the focus for the lush historical stuff I usually go for when I’m in that mood, and 50% because I started my month by reading Echoes and kept spooking myself so that book alone took two weeks.
My reading tastes/needs meant that nothing in my pile of ARCs appealed except for The Curse of the Marquis de Sade, and my library failed to deliver more than one of my New Release Holds, so I actually managed to get through a decent number of books from my physical TBR, which is nice. (Except that I have to find space for them on the normal bookshelves now.)
My desire for dark books also turned into an accidental Spooktober, with three books featuring ghosts, one with witches and goblins, two true crime, and a picture book about a witch. Most of the rest of my list was picked as palate cleansers. I think this is the first time I’ve been even semi-deliberately reading to match the season? It was a neat experience but I’m not sure it’s something I’m going to be sticking with. I can see Christmas-in-December or Romance-in-February getting old fast.
The library’s back on form for me though! I pick up three books and two DVDs tomorrow, so at least the first week or two of November are planned out for me. Though I really do need to do something about the ARCs…
And now, my usual “most worth it to me” list, which only has one book I don’t really recommend and it’s not the one on the bottom*:
Highway of Tears - Jessica McDiarmid Northern BC, disappearances, murder, apathy, racism, pain. - Indigenous subjects, 🇨🇦 - warning: missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, systemic racism
Witch Hazel - Molly Idle Hilda helps Hazel with housework. Hazel shares her memories. - warning: character death Mushroom Lullaby -  Kenneth Kraegel A cozy bedtime tale about mushrooms (and mushroom houses).
Echoes - Ellen Datlow (editor) A collection of ghost stories, mostly modern. - reasonably diverse authors and POVs - warnings: abuse of adults and children, murder, xenophobia, suicidal ideation, enclosed spaces
Confessions of the Fox - Jordy Rosenberg The adventures of Jack Sheppard, 18th-century thief and trans man, as annotated by a hapless, Marxist professor. - 🏳️‍🌈 protagonist, Indo-British and Black secondary characters, 🏳️‍🌈 secondary characters, 🏳️‍🌈 author, #ownvoices - warning: child abuse, misgendering, racism, blood
Not Good for Maidens - Tori Bovalino Lou’s grown up with secrets, but now her best friend is kidnapped (by goblins?) and the secrets are coming out. - 🏳️‍🌈 protagonists, 🏳️‍🌈 secondary characters, Black and Indo-British secondary characters, blind secondary character - warning: gore
Ghostland - Colin Dickey What ghost stories can tell us about American history and culture - warning: torture of enslaved people
Hazel's Theory of Evolution - Lisa Jenn Bigelow New school? Losing a best friend? Mom pregnant after two miscarriages? Not talking about the hard stuff’s worked well for Hazel so far. - 🏳️‍🌈 protagonist, 🏳️‍🌈 secondary characters; disabled, Japanese-American, and Black secondary characters; 🏳️‍🌈 author, #ownvoices
The London Nobody Knows - Geoffrey Fletcher A celebration of the whimsical and overlooked sights of London, in the 1960s. - warning: classism, moderately pro-Empire/colonialism, uncomfortable depictions of minorities
The Girl in the Green Silk Gown - Seanan McGuire Rose Marshall’s gotten protection from Bobby Cross, but he’s found a way around it. Now she’ll do anything to get back to normal. - 🏳️‍🌈 author
The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes - Cat Sebastian Rob is blackmailing Marian. Marian’s plans to escape her marriage go awry. Kidnapping each other is a completely normal and logical next step. - 🏳️‍🌈 protagonists, 🏳️‍🌈 secondary characters, 🏳️‍🌈 author, #ownvoices
The Curse of the Marquis de Sade - Joel Warner The history of 120 Days of Sodom, and a French financial scandal. Out in February 2023. - warning: mentions of sexual violence, rape, pedophilia, and murder
All the Discworld's a Stage - Terry Pratchett Stage adaptations of Feet of Clay, Unseen Academicals, and several Rincewind novels.
High Times in the Low Parliament - Kelly Robson Lana, a happy-go-lucky scribe, finds herself working for the fairy-created Parliament. If Parliament don’t get its act together soon, everyone living there drowns. - 🏳️‍🌈 cast, 🏳️‍🌈 author, #ownvoices, 🇨🇦 - warning: abuse
Currently reading:
The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle Victorian detective stories - major disabled character
 - warning: colonialism, racism

My Ted Lasso Re-watch: S1E6 (part 3)
Two Aces
Keeley makes a Pavlov's Dogs reference. But if the only good thing about her relationship with Jamie was the sex, then I can understand why she ended the relationship.
Keeley dropping truth bombs on Jamie. Because he doesn't recognise people genuinely helping him because his dad was always pushing him to dominate. He's thinks it all manipulation because that's probably what his dad does.
1st proper conversation between Sam and Rebecca. Sam just wants to do good and earn his fame and money legitimately. And Rebecca only considers joining midnight bonding session because how much of a sweetheart Sam is. I mean you try and say no to him, it's impossible and why the hell would you?
Roy is secretly a softie. And leaving home at 9 to move to a new city, yeah that's scary. I like hearing stories about Roy and his Grandad, he's seemed like a good figure in Roy's life.
Sam wanting to join the Nigerian team. He'll get there but isn't helped by one annoying, rich prick.
Richard kept sand from the beach where he first slept with a supermodel? Okay, you do you, buddy.
Nate values something because a girl was nice to him once. Something that probably does not happen all that much.
Rebecca putting in that day's newspaper because she is trying (and failing) to move on from her marriage. I say failing because people who do successfully move on don't plot revenge against their ex that involves a whole business being destroyed and a lot of innocence people getting caught up in it as collateral. That's not moving on, that's being a fucking bitch. It's all well and good saying fuck the haters when it comes to the press, but if her plan worked she would be even more despised by the press.
Cindy Clawford is a fantastic name for a cat. Sorry for your loss, Higgins.
Isaac and his duck pen is fucking adorable. Please can he have a new one?
They speed through the rest of the background actors, though I am interested in all the stuff they put in and why.
Colin putting the keys to his current car in, is peak himbo. Beard's question is valid. How did he get home?
Jamie joins in. His mum is wonderful, as we find out in season 3 and a better influence on Jamie than his dad. Jamie is the way he is because of his dad's need to look good in front of other people. He's not trying to get Jamie to win because he cares about him, he's doing it so he can look good and claim Jamie's accomplishments as his own. His dad's abuse towards him over shadowed his love for the game.
We never got to see what Ted and Beard put in? We were robbed.
Yeah, don't burn stuff inside, do it outside, and safely. Don't need anymore forest fires in the world, because I know that's been a fucking thing.
Higgins cares more about the team the longer he spends time with Ted. He might have been hesitant to go along with Rebecca's palm in the beginning, but after spending time with the team and Ted and Beard, he genuinely cares about them.
Dani is back and he's fine. Good, because I would go full Dean Winchester on any ghost who hurts Dani.
Jamie being the one to start the chant shows him wanting to be apart of the team. Ted was getting through to him, with Keeley's help.
Rebecca shrugging off the coat because she doesn't want to be associated with the team in anyway, and is off to get rid of Jamie.
The team is happy and and all seems well until Ted finds out what Rebecca did. And he is pissed off for the second time this episode.
Ted let's slip that he bakes the biscuits for Rebecca. I think we should have gotten a more shocked reaction from her. She went to lengths to find out where the biscuits came from and finding out that the man you've been trying to ruin has been baking them for you all along, that's got to be a bit of gut punch. All I'm saying is we needed a couple more seconds on Rebecca's reaction.
Everyone is devastated that Jamie is gone, because the team needed him, despite his shitty behaviour. And Dani is a sweet cinnamon roll to try and cheer up Ted, Beard and Nate.

It's pretty wild how neoliberalism, particularly social media discourse and thinkpiece journalism, has turned a valuable concept like toxic masculinity into yet another racist gender binary.
Take, for example, Ted Lasso.
As a cultural norm, toxic masculinity does not always require top-down enforcement through physical violence. It's not just the guys at the top of the hierarchy who are beating toxic masculinity into people. People throughout the social hierarchy keep toxic masculinity going through subtler means, like language and organizational structure.
The Ted Lasso fandom (and many journalists covering the show) have simplified this to "toxic masculinity is when lower-status men say mean things."
And because toxic masculinity has become a binary, this means that the only "bad" masculinity resides in mean-saying, lower-status men.
Everyone else is exhibiting "good" masculinity. Even when they're enacting physical violence and call other men bitches.
At the end of the day, what this does is stigmatize characters who are less traditionally masculine--as defined by white norms. And, crucially, it grants a free pass to characters who fulfill the ideals of traditional white masculinity.
And that's how we get this bizarro world where men of color, particularly Nathan and Sam, are hyper-scrutinized for using their words and expressing their emotional needs. And where white characters like Beard and Roy are beloved for bottling up their feelings and threatening/using physical violence.
Roy headbutted Jamie so he could hug him after. If that's not toxic masculinity, I don't know what is. But the fandom doesn't have time to unpack that. It's too busy arguing that Nathan calling Colin a motel painting is somehow worse than Colin physically attacking Nathan everyday for god knows how long.
I'm not trying to reverse the binary here, making Nathan good and Roy toxic. The problem is that we are thinking about masculinity as a good/toxic binary. People--including fictional characters--relate to masculinity in ways that are far more complex than merely good or toxic. We lose so much when we reduce masculinity to just another binary.
Also, the good/toxic binary--like binaries in general--is a tool of white supremacy. So maybe let's knock that shit off.

Worf is a wonderful character because, on the one hand, yes, he chose to live in what amounts to the RV parked in DS9's driveway (like the surfer dude from Step by Step), and found great comfort in its austere solitude.
But he also 100% would not buy a property if the finishings weren't original to the house.

Do I think Nathan Shelley is unredeemable? No, not all.
Do I want to watch Nathan Shelley prostrate himself at the feet of a club (a business) that has exploited and abused him for years? Not particularly.
Do I want to pay Apple to see Nathan Shelley earn his way back into the good graces of rich, white people who treat him--at best--like a fucking child? Nope, I'd rather bathe in gravel.
Fuck redemption. Fuck some top-down notion of morality. Gimme reconciliation and mutual accountability.

I'm just minding my business on my lunch break, trying to savor a few moments of solace in the bustling chaos of the office, when x decides to make my midday sandwich a lot less digestible. He strolls up, bold as brass, seeking my profound wisdom on the intricate dance of romance. I mean, really? Do I emit the vibe of a seasoned dating guru?
In front of my entire team, he unveils his quest for love counsel, completely oblivious and unbeknownst to him my questionable dating history – like that time I tolerated a man who thought physical abuse was an acceptable form of communication. Oh, and let's not forget the somnambulant escapade with an ex who had a peculiar fetish. According to him, consent is optional if it aligns with one's peculiar predilections. Not exactly credentials for Cupid's advisory board.
To add a splash of absurdity to this charade, the guy is a whole fifteen years my senior. I'm left pondering what peculiar rites of passage the Gen Xers engage in. Amidst his quest for love, he drops the bomb that he's on a race against time to conquer a checklist of fifty exploits before hitting the half-century mark. At 49, he's got his sights set on the Andes Mountains.
As he rambles on about his bucket list, my mind drifts to more pressing matters – namely, my unfulfilled yearning for an Andes candy bar. You know, the one with those charming mountains on the packaging? A moment of whimsy amidst the absurdity of it all.
Yet, amid the lunacy, a spark of inspiration ignites. I crave my own checklist, one that transcends the mundane. To outlive my father and face the challenges with unwavering courage – now that's a list worth crafting.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 02/07/2022 (Drake, Taylor Swift, Charlie Puth)
Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” is at #1 for a third consecutive week. It may be on its last legs – or it could just be the start – but for now, welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
Rundown
As always, we start with our notable dropouts, songs exiting the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. Off of the debut, we say farewell to “Falling Back” by Drake but there’s no need to worry about Drake because Drake will be back with another Drake song by Drake debuting high on the Drake—I mean, chart. Otherwise, we say goodbye to “Yet to Come” by BTS, “Churchill Downs” by Jack Harlow featuring Drake, “Thousand Miles” by The Kid LAROI (just as it starts to grow on me), “BMW” by Bad Boy Chiller Crew, “Down Under” by Luude and Colin Hay and finally, “STAY” by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber. Rough week for The Kid LAROI, I suppose, and though “STAY” is still a good song, I can’t say it didn’t overstay its welcome.
What are always infinitely more interesting are our gains, as on a slower, more low-profile week like this, you’d except some traction from songs already charting. Of course, we don’t start with that, given that there are three returning entries gaining momentum from the Glastonbury festival which had some... notable performances to say the least. “N95” by Kendrick Lamar is at #75, “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo is at #74 and headliner Billie Eilish’s “Happier than Ever” is all the way up at #31. Now in terms of notable gains, songs moving up five or more positions from last week, we have actually not as many as I expected, but there is still “Call Me Every Day” by Chris Brown featuring WizKid up to #53 off of the album boost (more from him – or not – later), “No Excuses” at Bru-C at #40 (it’s his first to reach the top 40), “Vegas” by Doja Cat at #35, “I Ain’t Worried” by OneRepublic at #24, “Seventeen Going Under” by Sam Fender at #20 also thanks to Glastonbury and outside of the top five, that’s pretty much it, and I can’t say I have strong opinions about any of these songs.
That top five this week does include a big gain, as while we can scrape aside “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra at #5, we can’t ignore “BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyoncé getting its first full tracking week at therefore boosting up to #4 in the top 10, where I suspect it’ll stick around for quite a while. The rest of the top three is pretty routine: “As it Was” by Harry Styles at #3, “Afraid to Feel” by LF SYSTEM at #2 and of course, “Running Up That Hill” at the very top.
Just like a few weeks ago, there will be no Off the Charts section this week, mostly because, well, if I did it this week, there’d be only one album to discuss on the next, so considering that I’m kind of burnt out as is, I gave myself a good week to catch up with everything so I can discuss all of these records the next week, which seems fair enough to me. With that said, I guess we can just move onto our new arrivals.
NEW ARRIVALS
#66 – “Till The Wheels Fall Off” – Chris Brown featuring Lil Durk and Capella Grey
Produced by Kifano Reque, Fridayy?, RoccStar and Yacoub Kawaja
I don’t think I’ve made a serious review towards a Chris Brown song since “No Guidance”, and before it’s put into question: yes, I do listen to the songs and I largely consider them such a nothingness that I don’t need to bother validating any kind of effort and talent that is put into the music of such an abusive hack. Sometimes it’s unfortunate too – I like Lil Durk’s verse here – but if the rest of the industry isn’t willing to blackball him, I’ll speak for people who don’t stand this guy or his five-minute pleas for pity (seriously, if it weren’t for Durk, this’d be insufferable). Therefore, I took suggestions: who should I review instead? Well, I haven’t heard enough of either Cochise or $NOT to decide if I really like either of them, but Olivia suggested their collaboration “Tell Em”, and well, it’s a damn good song. The “rage beat” here feels oddly muted, so much so that the pulsating bass over the laser synth kind of overcompensates, with Cochise demanding that you turn him up in what is pretty much the only coherent thought in his entire colourful performance. The song is arguably just one trick played well, but considering that Cochise is constantly switching flows, the chorus has that little fake-out and unconventional bassline, and $NOT for once doesn’t sound devoid of personality, I’d argue it’s got many tricks up its sleeve as not to overstay its welcome. Cochise’s goofier delivery on the final flow gives this formless, ethereal song some genuine bounce and whilst I’d prefer for a more enveloping mix or an outro that isn’t a full cop-out and actually a conclusive finish that doesn’t leave a sour taste in my mouth, most of the song is just a pretty damn good “rage” song. They’re more compelling than Yeat is at least, and I do want to hear more from both, Cochise especially.
#64 – “Psychic” – Chris Brown featuring Jack Harlow
Produced by Albi, Preme, DeeJayM0 and Nick Cassidy
Well, Chris Brown sounds like he’s choking on Auto-Tune on this one, so Piran suggested that I listen to “SNAP” by Rosa Linn, an Armenian singer who represented her country in Eurovision this year, ultimately placing 20th in the final. Whilst the song wasn’t successful at the song contest, it has gained a bit of second traction and I understand why: the songwriting is pretty simple and at times generic but the counting gimmick is fun enough and Rosa Linn can sell the content with a lot of exhausted frustration – she sounds really good on this. My problems lie somewhat with the production which sounds like someone got into Mumford & Suns way too late and delivered a pretty folkish guitar strum alongside the drums that make this sound more like music for a car advertisement than for an international song contest, especially with all the reverb. Regardless, it’s a decent song, and absolutely a catchy one, with the melancholy pianos and buzzing synths coming in at the end that actually add a lot more to this mix, even if I wish they were a bit louder. As is, I don’t mind this at all, but you see how much more fun that was than it would be reviewing Chris Brown? Thankfully, now we can move on.
#63 – “Carolina” – Taylor Swift
Produced by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner
I don’t even know what Where the Crawdads Sing is, but apparently Taylor liked the movie enough to provide an original song for its soundtrack. It also makes sense to me why because skimming the plot seems to draw some parallels: the book and its film adaptation are about a girl growing up isolated in North Carolina, and given that Taylor’s folksier side has of recent been very willing to get into bittersweet, haunting territory I could see this working. With Taylor’s intimate vocals placed at the front of the mix alongside the guitar plucking that feels somewhat improvised through the song given the mix and how often it just stumbles across itself, it definitely does create that image, especially with lyrics about places that she will never go. There are definitely direct references to the plot that I just won’t get here, but the threatening idea of your past constantly sticking to you like “Carolina stains on the dress she left” is one that resonates outside of the film’s narrative. There’s not really much to say about this song at least for me, but the strings gorgeously complement Taylor’s vocal riffing in the bridge, and the outro that takes a dark turn is downright scary yet kind of badass at the same time. I’m not sure if that serves the same purpose as the film or the book, which could be a depressing snoozefest for all I know or care, but this is a great song.
#51 – “From the D 2 the LBC” – Eminem and Snoop Dogg
Produced by Eminem
I’ve seen this praised as a “return to form” and sorry, but I just can’t get behind this. Eminem and Snoop Dogg squash a beef no one knew or cared about in order to shill for NFTs, and this song is supposed to be a celebration of the duo resolving their differences in the name of our holy crypto scamlords. I’m imagining Em, Snoop and Dr. Dre as the nudist scam aliens from Futurama and it makes a lot more sense to me than these Bored Apes. I guess I should talk about the song itself, but aside from a decent string line that really is reminiscent of classic Eminem, I don’t find much to like in the production, which has a pretty basic piano melody and a really overblown bass that kind of disrupts any of the momentum this beat could have had. Eminem, despite his vocal mixing being all over the place, delivers a pretty okay verse that goes on for way too long but does emulate some of the classic Eminem... or more accurately, the Music to be Murdered By-era version of what he thinks is “classic Eminem”, including the corny punchlines that don’t hit because he hits you over the head with a baseball bat called “the joke”, and the supersonic flow that just gets exhausting. So, maybe Snoop Dogg can save the day? Well, he tries, awakening the calmer-flowed, weed-loving Snoop into a rarer and more energetic cadence that I’m not sure he can pull off that well, especially with the overuse of punch-ins that just makes it sound like an Eminem verse in another man’s voice, except without the corny punchlines, but at the sacrifice of not saying anything that interesting. Snoop’s flow is good enough for me to say that he kind of carries this, but I’m not a fan of it overall. Maybe with a better beat this would have been something at least worthy of being placed on Encore but as is, I hope someone performs “right-click save-as” on this song. My account been hacked. All my apes gone.
#48 – “My 24th Birthday” – Dave
Produced by Dave
Well, happy birthday, Dave. I know it’s a bit late but the format of this show didn’t really allow for me to know in advance. This is a sequel to his 2017 track that celebrated his 19th birthday and with that, I realise time is going quickly enough to drill a hole in my head without me noticing. Oh, and this is mostly a good song. Dave as a rapper tends to be more observational, even in his flexing, and you can tell the Drake influence in his meandering thoughts on fame as well as his name-dropping, but unlike Drake, Dave actually dares to be conscious and tackles how systematic racism has affected his community as well as gave him greater admiration for his mother, who proved to him some of the biblical teachings that he could have seen as surreal, not because she preached religious doctrine but because that if his mother was able to feed as many people as she could with just the bare essentials, God could too. I like how the sole verse here isn’t fully realised and you can tell he’s still unsure of some of what he’s saying, which adds a more human depth to this that’s honestly refreshing and prevents it from being pretentious or droning. There’s some fun wordplay towards the middle too, like how he can’t be with “grasses” so he gets AstroTurf, and he has to have watches in different timezones, but by the end it gets damn near devotional and it all feels genuine. It helps that the production is pretty good too, with the chipmunk vocal loop in the back and the somewhat wirey, bouncing production, so its six-minute runtime doesn’t feel as tiring as it should be, though once again I do have some problems with Dave’s more monotone and unchanging flow as always. I love the content here but the delivery feels way too rehearsed to really do it any good: a couple of other, more emotive takes could have really made this special. I’m still pretty happy with this, though I can’t see it lasting very long as a result of its runtime and structure, or lack thereof.
#41 – “Left and Right” – Charlie Puth featuring Jung Kook
Produced by Charlie Puth
Now for something a lot less personal: Charlie Puth. BTS is fully on hiatus given that there are solo projects coming out, so I guess Puth took the opportunity for his newest intricately-crafted underwhelming pop tune to have some sales behind it. Sadly, it’s kind of terrible. With a lot of Puth’s work, I can say that it’s well-made and thought out but the panning left-right effect is just dumb, not clever at all, and not in a way that’s fun because the song isn’t fun, it’s a breezy breakup track where Puth can’t sell any kind of emotion amidst the tuning, so I honestly can’t tell if it’s bitter or just passive. The pathetically distorted bedroom-pop drums hit about as hard as a feather, and the unmoving guitar lick is aggravating, even when it has some genuine bassy angst to it in the chorus, so whilst all the clever drum fills and obviously great mixing and multi-tracking hit with a generally pleasant touch, it all feels like showing off because he is incapable of making a song with any genuine charm. When he was a douchebag in Voicenotes, it worked because at least it was a clear, coherent idea that he wanted to push through. Here, it’s just been replaced with an airy transparency where it sounds like Puth has a focus group plug-in for his DAW. Jung Kook sounds good here but is severely underused, as he would have been a great breath of fresh air from Puth, yet doesn’t even get to harmonise in the chorus, so his addition becomes pretty much pointless, especially since he doesn’t have a writing credit, so this really is not notable in any way other than being pretty damn bad.
#30 – “Sticky” – Drake
Produced by Carnage and RY X
And we couldn’t end the episode on a good note after that, could we? This is one of the worst songs off of Honestly, Nevermind despite the fact that he’s actually rapping, mostly because Drake has no idea where to go with his flow on this minimal house beat that makes no sense for the content. There’s nothing melancholic here which would make the glitchy vocal loop have any resonance, there’s nothing tense here to excuse the constant jam of the bass and kick which doesn’t sound awful but never feels like it resolves effectively, and no one other than Drake is having fun so the shifting drum loop in the breakdown and gang vocals just undermine any of Drake’s attempts to be either funny or “intimidating”. It feels like a joke at Drake’s expense, especially with his breathless, lazy flow and cadence here that sounds downright awful, and even if that is the point I don’t think Drake fully understands how insufferable and not clever he’s being in these bars. I didn’t know Virgil Abloh, but I fully doubt that he would agree with Drake’s statement that after his death, he came back through the embodiment of Drake. You can tell in that humble sample he brings in that Abloh wouldn’t want to have this messiah presence, and even if he did, to claim that Drake is his “second coming” sounds a lot more like arrogance than tribute, especially when the lyrics you have to back up your prophecy is that you didn’t change but instead “millioned”. Screw this.
Conclusion
It’s only fair that Drake gets Worst of the Week for “Sticky”, right? This wasn’t a good week by any means, but given that I can’t really dishonour songs I didn’t even review, I suppose the Dishonourable Mention instead goes to Charlie Puth for “Left and Right”. The Honourable Mention is obviously “My 24th Birthday” by Dave, and it’s no question that Taylor Swift gets Best of the Week for “Carolina”, as those two really did stick out. As for next week, it’s probably another slow one, and I doubt that any of this will last to see it. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!

ted lasso fic. ted lasso/rebecca welton. rating: e. 12k. for @klovenhooves for the RomCommunism Discord Secret Santa. Happy Holidays! tw: implied/referenced abuse (rupert), body insecurity
in the low lamp light i was free
In the eight months they’ve been together, Ted’s heard all manner of reactions to his relationship with Rebecca.
Keeley screamed, Beard nodded once and gave him a thumbs up. Roy took him aside to say that if he ever broke her heart he would rip his legs off and feed them to his neighbor's cats, and hadn’t looked at all amused when Ted pointed out that would probably make them sick. The press have gone back and forth: one day they’re Richmond’s king and queen, the next it’s a conflict of interest and they should both be fired. He’s had strangers in pubs come up and tell him he’s a lucky man, and old friends he hasn’t spoken to in years call up to ask if she has any hot friends. The team has been largely supportive, if a tad apprehensive at first, but as the months have gone on and nothing has really changed, they’ve settled into it, even gently teasing him about how “adorable” they are when Rebecca comes down to the locker room to ask what he wants for dinner, or to remind him they have a lunch with her mother.
They’ve been careful to avoid too much PDA at work, careful to keep a boundary between what the team sees and how they actually are at home; but he’s caught Jamie’s eye once or twice when Rebecca has given him a parting kiss on the cheek, seen the way Colin’s face softens when he catches them holding hands before a match.
It comforts him to know the team has their backs, and for the most part they’ve managed to keep themselves safe in a bubble of their own making, often choosing to order in instead of dine out, keeping a respectable distance at public events.
But tonight had been different—a private fundraiser for an old friend of Rebecca’s father, no press allowed. Just fifty or so people milling about a ballroom, eating hors d'oeuvres and drinking too much wine.
And he’d enjoyed it, at first—the freedom to put his hand at the base of her spine. To lean in to whisper in her ear. He’d loved the way she’d touched him frequently, or slipped an arm around his waist while talking to another couple, or looked at him without trying to mask the fondness in her eyes. It was pleasant and almost fun, with Rebecca whispering into his ear about who was who and their dramas.
She’d introduced him to a woman named Annabelle, the wife of her father’s friend, and it made him feel a bit giddy, the way she’d put her hand on his arm, said so easily, “This is my partner, Ted.”
—and then Annabelle had laughed.
Rebecca had frowned, and Annabelle caught it, blinked. “Oh, I—sorry, dear, I thought you were joking.”
There’d been just a hint of steel in Rebecca’s voice, an entirely too innocent, “Why would I be joking?” that made Annabelle pause. But then she’d shrugged, and waved a hand, and said,
“Well, he’s a bit different from your usual type, isn’t he?” as if he wasn't standing right there, and she’d tilted her head to the side, pointed out a younger man in a sharp grey suit currently talking the ear off one of the caterers. “Luca spilled the beans, I’m afraid.”
Rebecca had whipped around, and the man looked up, his face brightening as he abandoned the woman, hurrying across the room. Rebecca’s hand had tightened on Ted’s arm, and he could tell her smile was plastered on, but she’d stiffly accepted the somewhat lingering kiss Luca had pressed to her cheek.
When she pulled away too quickly, he’d pouted. “Rebecca, I haven’t seen you in ages. You stopped calling.” He’d batted his eyelashes, and Rebecca was quick to say,
“Luca, how lovely to see you. This is Ted, my partner.”
Luca had frowned—“Business partner?”—and Annabelle had stifled a laugh.
“No,” Rebecca had said shortly, and it took Luca longer than Ted thought strictly necessary for his eyes to go wide.
It was shock, easily identifiable, but to his credit Luca had snapped his jaw shut and held out a hand, his grip firm but polite.
“Nice to meet you. I was wondering what kept Rebecca away.”
Beside him, Rebecca had tensed, and Ted laid a hand on her back in what he’d hoped was comfort. But Luca still looked skeptical and Annabelle amused, and they kept looking at each other like there was some great joke he wasn’t in on. It wasn’t until he briefly excused himself to use the restroom, decided to take the roundabout way back, that it made sense. The three of them had their backs to him as he approached, and he’d heard Annabelle scoff.
“Be serious, dear—an American?”
“I am serious, and Ted is lovely.”
“Of course he is. He has to be, to make up for that horrid mustache.”
Ted had winced, the remark slightly soothed by the way Rebecca had jerked back, and he’d heard her sharp, "Excuse me?" before Annabelle continued,
“You usually have better taste. Weren’t you seeing that good looking fellow, the young one; Sal?”
“Sam. And no.”
“Pity. Now he was a pretty one,” she’d said, and Luca had laughed—
“Standing right here.”
—and Annabelle had squeezed his arm. “Of course you are, too. I’m just saying, Rebecca, you shouldn’t sell yourself so short. There are plenty of other, handsome fish in the sea. There’s no need to tie yourself down to someone so—”
And then Luca had caught sight of him and nudged Annabelle and Rebecca had turned, her expression so stricken, so terrified, that he’d pretended he hadn’t heard. Rejoined the conversation with a smile, kept up his usual affability, and ignored the way Rebecca kept looking at him the rest of the night. She was looking for any sign, he knows, and he’d done his best to hide it from her, the way the words ricocheted around in his head.

What I Read in July 2021
Oh, man, this is gonna be a long post. I bookmarked 33 fics, all of them Harry Potter related, with a few cross-overs.
Forget-Me-Not by Lomonaaeron *favorite*
Plot: Harry isn’t the Boy-Who-Lived, but his parents still died, and Albus Dumbledore, concerned that Death Eaters might seek the boy’s death, cast a powerful charm on him to make wizards ignore him before Harry was left with the Dursleys. Except, with the Elder Wand in play, the charm was far too powerful, and made others essentially forget Harry existed when not directly interacting with him. Sorted into Ravenclaw at Hogwarts, Harry lives a contented life with no one either loving or hating him…until the charm breaks on his seventeenth birthday, and he’s suddenly plunged directly into the middle of a living world at war.
Characters: Harry, Theo Nott, Dumbledore, Neville, Ollivander, Lupin, Rabastan Lestrange, Ron, Hermione, Draco, original non-human characters, Peter Pettigrew, Umbridge
Relationships: Harry Potter/Theo Nott
Warnings: none apply
Tags: ancient runes, socially awkward Harry Potter, Ravenclaw Harry Potter, Harry Potter is not the boy-who-lived, angst, romance, horcruxes, muggleborn registration commission, blood magic
My Notes: I inhaled this in one sitting and then cried for like 10 minutes afterwards, it’s so beautifully written, it became an instant favorite
*complete*
He Turned Around by ChipOfftheOldSoul *favorite*
Plot: When the Goblet of Fire spit out Harry's name that Halloween night, he was told to join the other champions. Instead, he turned around and walked away.
Characters: Harry, Snape, Draco, Ron, Hermione, Victor Krum, Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini, Crabbe, Goyle, Daphne Greengrass, Fred & George, Marcus Flint, Millicent Bulstrode, Tracey Davis
Relationships: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter; Harry Potter & Severus Snape; Draco Malfoy & Severus Snape
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse, mentioned homophobia
Tags: book 4, good Severus Snape, good Draco Malfoy, good Slytherins, smart Harry Potter, Dumbledore bashing, manipulative Dumbledore, past child abuse, runes, slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers, Slytherin Harry Potter, Hogwarts House re-sort, no Ron bashing but he’s not great for a while
My Notes: I’ve already read this twice in less than a week period and I cannot wait until it’s updated (hopefully it’ll be updated) and I absolutely love the way it’s written and Harry’s characterization. I also very much appreciate that there won’t be Ron bashing, I’ve read too many Ron bashing fics, but I am here for all of the Dumbledore bashing!
*incomplete* [last updated June 2021]
Stars by LilyIsAwesomerThanYou
Plot: When Snape discovers Harry's abusive past during an Occlumency lesson, Harry panics. Snape is forced to take care of him in the aftermath. Mentor/guardian fic. As always, no slash.
Characters: Harry Potter, Severus Snape, Dumbledore, Ron, Hermione
Relationships: Gen
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempt, depression
Tags: Severitus, angst, drama, past abuse, hurt/comfort, mentor Snape, guardian Snape, occlumency
My Notes: Snape is a dick in this one, and so far he has not gotten any better, just a warning, but there’s some great Harry angst going on here (that’s why I bookmarked it). Yeah, Snape is pretty evil in this one, there’s some victim blaming and just straight up verbal abuse from him.

violet hill by rejectedreality
Plot: Where Harriet Potter is Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes’ soulmate.
Fandoms: Harry Potter & MCU
Characters: Bucky Barnes, Harry Potter, Steve Rogers, Hermione, Ron
Relationships: Bucky Barnes/Harry Potter; Steve Rogers/Harry Potter; Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers; Bucky/Steve/Harry
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse, emotional/psychological abuse
Tags: fem!Harry Potter, soulmate-identifying marks, age difference, angst with a happy ending, it gets worse before it gets better
My Notes: this is so, so, so fucking beautiful! I am straight up in love with this fic, and I am so sad that it hasn’t been updated for a few years because there was so much potential. There are some hints at underage couples, as Harry’s 15 while Bucky and Steve are adults, but nothing actually happens.
*incomplete* [last updated 2017]
trapped in a blue haze by MourningElegance
Plot: “And in that moment, Draco knows. He knows that all his deep-rooted suspicions about Harry’s childhood are terribly, horribly true.” As their relationship grows, so do Draco’s misgivings about Harry’s past.

From the Dungeons by huntersg1rl

Characters: Harry, Draco, Blaise, Pansy, Daphne, Snape, Narcissa, Lucius, Sirius, Remus, Pomfrey, Dumbledore
Relationships: pre-Harry/Draco; Severus Snape & Harry Potter
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse
Tags: Slytherin Harry Potter, Good Severus Snape, good Lucius Malfoy, good Narcissa Malfoy, manipulative Dumbledore, POC Harry, animagus transformation, wizengamot, politics and culture
My Notes: YA’LL! This one is so cool! It’s going under some major maintenance at the moment, so it’ll be a bit of a wait until it gets going again but I recommend reading it immediately before the changes get enacted. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Harry’s a BAMF in this series, especially when we get to book 3
*incomplete* [this is a series, first three parts are completed, last updated February 2021]

Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, major character death, attempted sexual assault, implied/referenced child abuse, suicide attempt, kidnapping
Tags: Dumbledore bashing, Weasley bashing, Hermione bashing, Harry runs away, Snape bashing, not so evil Voldemort, trouble magnet!Harry
My Notes: this one is really good and it features a Harry and Dobby friendship. I’m gonna spoil it right now, Hotchner is Harry’s dad, I hate it when it doesn’t state it in the tags

The heir of something or other by diregewithoutmusic
Plot: When kids in the Slytherin Common Room tossed jeers at the pudgy feet of Millicent Bulstrode, Harry rose up to do something about it. This Harry, now one of Snape’s own, got fewer House points lost but many more detentions– it had never been the colors on his hem that Severus hated. This was not wishing Harry an easy path. This was not wishing the boy a warm House. This was Harry, three weeks in, sleep deprived and considering running away and going back to Privet Drive. This was Harry in the back of Potions class, blank-faced under Snape’s disdain the way he’d perfected under the Dursleys’s torments. When Quirrell shouted “troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know,” and Harry overheard that there was a girl in the bathroom crying, he still ran off to make sure she got out okay. He hesitated first, at the back of the little pack of Slytherin first years (at the back so that no one could get behind him)– he hesitated. And Millicent Bulstrode, who could never quite keep her tummy tucked in enough, could never brush all the cat hair off her robes, never quite keep her temper in check, hesitated, too.
Characters: Harry, Millicent, Colin Creevey, Hermione, Dennis Creevey, Luna, Ron, Draco, Astoria, Daphne, Pansy, Neville, Susan Bones
Relationships: gen
Warnings: major character death
Tags: Slytherin Harry, canon typical violence
My Notes: this made me cry. It like actually made me cry. I don’t cry when I read fanfiction, but this one actually made me cry, it’s been two weeks and I still feel like crying thinking about this fic, but that being said it’s written so beautifully.
*complete*
Conditionally by Lomonaaeren
Plot: Harry finds out that he's Snape's son. It goes as badly as possible.
Characters: Harry, Snape, Dumbledore, Sirius, Hermione, Ron, Seamus, Umbridge, Rita, Neville, Voldemort
Relationships: minor Lily/Snape; Harry & Snape; Hermione & Ron & Harry
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, suicidal thoughts, minor character death
Tags: Severitus, present tense, powerful Harry, Snape is Harry’s biological father, unhealthy coping mechanisms, independent Harry
My Notes: wow this one made me so mad for Harry. Sirius and Remus are not Harry’s friends, nor Dumbledore. Be warned, as good as this fic is, you will be very angry at all the adults in this fic. Snape isn’t a loving father type, and their relationship isn’t the greatest but it’s better than nothing by the end.
*complete*
Harry Potter and the Secrets Within by WhoWroteThis
Plot: Harry Potter is a very special, but very abused little boy. When a giant drags him into a world unknown, he'll need all the help he can get to understand his newfound belonging. Lucky for him, he has a snake, a dragon, and a horde of protective allies on his side.
Characters: Harry, original animal characters, Snape, Draco, Lucius and Narcissa, Portrait Salazar Slytherin, Basilisk, Blaise, Hogwarts ghosts, Quirrell, Voldemort
Relationships: Harry & Voldemort; Harry & Draco; Harry & Snape
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse, internalized homophobia, implied/referenced alcohol abuse, suicide threats and thoughts
Tags: Harry Potter needs a hug, parseltongue, Harry Potter has a pet snake, powerful Harry, metamorphmagus Harry, good Malfoy family, Slytherin Harry, slow burn, Slytherin politics, Hagrid bashing, Hermione bashing, Ron bashing, Dumbledore bashing, rituals, centaurs, dragons, cats, snakes
My Notes: I will literally never be trustworthy of the basilisk after reading Antithesis but I have to admit the basilisk in this fic is pretty great
*incomplete* [last updated August 2021]
The Tainted Blood of the Father by StarLight_Massacre *favorite*
Fandoms: Supernatural & Harry Potter
Plot: Harry has broken away from his chains after the Dursleys go too far. A simple desire to make a withdrawal from Gringotts leads to something much larger and exposes more than he ever knew about himself. A rushed, impulsive trip to America changes his entire life as he might have just found himself a true family to call his own.
Characters: Harry, John Winchester, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Bobby
Relationships: Gen
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, implied/referenced child abuse, attempted sexual assault
Tags: Awkward Winchesters trying to deal with Harry, cinnamon roll Harry
My Notes: The dynamic between Harry and the Winchesters shouldn’t work this well, but they absolutely do. Harry is a little Sam, he acts so much like him it’s so cute and everyone finds it so cute. Really great amount of angst and hurt/comfort. Doesn’t deal with the wizard side of things that much but I expect that’ll change in the upcoming chapters. Author has stated they don’t know if the Winchesters ever will find out that Harry’s a wizard, however, so keep that in mind
*incomplete* [last updated April 2021]
On a Pale Horse by Hyliian
Plot: When Dumbledore tried to summon a hero from another world to deal with their Dark Lord problem, this probably wasn't what he had in mind.
Characters: Harry, Death, Dumbledore, Hermione, Remus, Voldemort, Ron
Relationships: Gen
Warnings: none
Tags: master of death Harry, dimension travel, summoning rituals gone horribly wrong, godlike Harry, Dumbledore bashing, crack treated seriously, does major character death count as a tag when the major character is Death?
My Notes: so absolutely creepy, I love it so much, our Harry is not really all that much like Harry at all because he’s an immortal eldritch being of horror
*incomplete* [last updated 2018]
tell me whether he is dead by LullabyKnell *favorite*
Plot: Harry suffers a few side-effects of dying but not dying. “Hey, can someone help me with this? The mirror in the bedroom’s stopped working for me. “What do you mean ‘the mirror’s stopped working’?”
Characters: Harry, Ron, Hermione
Relationships: Harry/Ron/Hermione
Warnings: none
Tags: post-canon, epilogue what epilogue, post-battle of Hogwarts, post-Deathly Hallows, haunting, implied/referenced character death, gen or pre-slash, fluff and angst, oblivious Harry, master of death Harry
My Notes: so fucking brilliant, this author literally never misses, the relationship between the golden trio is so fucking cute and I love them so much

A New Place to Stay by DebsTheSlytherinSnapeFan *favorite*
Plot: Harry Potter is called up to Dumbledore's office and told he was being moved elsewhere to keep him safe. He no longer has to stay at the Dursley's, but Dumbledore tells him he has to stay with Severus Snape. For a few days it seemed like a bad idea. Until Severus Snape uncovers the truth of who Harry Potter really is and what he's been through. Watch as Severus does as nobody else has done before him. He takes care of Harry. Watch him flourish into who he was meant to be, a boy with the heart of a Gryffindor and smarts of a Slytherin. The Dursley's, Umbridge and Dumbledore had better watch out Severus is out for revenge. Spy or no spy, Severus is not allowing anyone away with hurting Harry.
Characters: Snape, Harry, Dumbledore, Neville, Luna, Hermione, Ron
Relationships: Gen
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse
Tags: Severitus
My Notes: I’ve read so many of these types of fics that even though this is more than 300k words I can’t remember a single thing about this but it must’ve been good because I labelled it as favorite, so

truth’s like blood underneath your fingernails by Choices_We_Make, questionsthemselves
Plot: "Slytherin would do well, help you on the path to greatness," the hat seems to be coaxing him, but for something that can read his mind, it sure doesn't seem to know him very well. Harry doesn't want greatness. He doesn't need his name in lights and on everyone's lips. He wants meals, hot ones, whenever he wants, with people that he likes and that like him. Friends he can have adventures with, huddle under the blankets with at night and laugh with. People who might think… think he's worth something. In which Harry is sorted into Slytherin, and Snape deals with the fallout.
Characters: Harry, Snape, Draco, Theo, Blaise
Relationships: Harry & Snape
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse
Tags: Slytherin Harry, Severitus sort of, angst with a sort of hopeful ending, Snape discovers abuse

Harry Potter and the Immortal’s Playground by May_May_o_o
Fandoms: MCU & Harry Potter
Plot: Living forever isn't all it's cracked up to be. Harry Potter learns the meaning of immortality when everyone he loves dies again and again after becoming the master of death. After millennia of love lost, Death sends him to "Elsewhere" in order to give his master something new and different. Harry emerges from ash in New Asgard. What's a man like Thor to do but offer the traveler a home?
Characters: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Death, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Clint, Natasha, Loki, Thor, Bruce, May Parker
Relationships: Harry/Ginny; Thor/Harry; Harry & Avengers
Warnings: PTSD, suicide attempts
Tags: master of death Harry, magically powerful Harry, panic attacks, hurt/comfort, post-snap
My Notes: I don’t usually like Harry paired with any of the Avengers other than Peter, but Thor and Harry are so soft and written beautifully, I love this author so much
*incomplete* [last updated June 2021]
Another Mind Game by May_May_o_o *favorite*
Plot: Harry’s occlumency reveals his disturbing home life which sets off a chain reaction that cannot be undone. Snape finds himself begrudgingly caring about the bespectacled boy, Harry discovers what it's like to have adults who care, and Hermione finds herself becoming an accidental crime lord. Draco Malfoy is very much along for the ride, in all senses of the word. A ridiculous blend of hilarity and tragedy, Another Mind Game is the multi-faceted fanfiction you didn't know you wanted but will absolutely adore. Featuring a sassy Harry Potter, good friends, and a great deal of sarcasm.
Characters: Harry, Neville, Hermione, George, Fred, Snape, Ron, Luna, McGonagall, Dumbledore, house elves
Relationships: Draco/Harry; Hermione/Ron; Snape & Harry
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse; presumed suicidal (it makes sense when you read it)
Tags: mentor Snape, strong Harry, sassy Harry, slow burn, fluff and angst, Dumbledore bashing, crack treated seriously, Snape adopts Harry, protective Hogwarts, magically powerful Harry
My Notes: favorite, absolute favorite, read it three times already and it’s only been three weeks! The endnotes are so funny and add a lot of levity to the story

Characters: Harry, Snape, Dumbledore
Relationships: Harry & Snape
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse
Tags: traumatized Harry, miscommunications, Snape adopts Harry, sickfic

The Freak Who Lived by DeviantHufflepuff, Zaharya
Plot: When Harry's name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, he is kicked out of Gryffindor Tower by those he thought of as friends. It isn't until Snape finds him that the truth comes out about The Boy Who Lived.
Characters: Harry, Snape, Pomfrey, McGonagall, Viktor Krum, Fleur, Cedric, Draco, Neville, Blaise
Relationships: Sirius/Remus; Harry & Snape; Harry/Blaise
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, implied/referenced child abuse, PTSD, trauma induced age regression (not intense), suicidal thoughts
Tags: book 4, Severitus, Snape adopts Harry, panic attacks, seer Luna, Harry needs a hug, McGonagall is basically Harry’s mom, manipulative Dumbledore but he’s not evil, big brother Draco
My Notes: Snape is pretty cuddly in this one, he’s not shy with feelings and showing Harry that he’s loved which is nice and a nice change from other Severitus fics. Don’t be off-put by the age regression tag, it’s super low-key, there’s only a couple throw-away lines about it.

Stinging Nettle and Milking Pails by Oceanbreeze7 *favorite*
Plot: Are you a witch or / Are you a fairy? / Or are you the wife / of Michael Cleary? “The fairies will do wicked things sometimes,” Harry murmured gently, “Steal the milk when they get a chance, or skim the cream off the milk crocks.” “Do they ever steal anything more?” Luna asked him rhetorically. Harry couldn’t answer.
Characters: Harry, Luna, James, Lily
Warnings: author chose not to use warnings
Tags: wrong-boy-who-lived, Harry has a twin, dark fairy tale elements, fairy tale style, druids, fae and fairies, James and Lily live
My Notes: Oceanbreeze7 should straight up be a horror writer. This is the writer who wrote Antithesis, the fic that I was literally unable to finish because I was too heartbroken, and they did not disappoint with this one! It’s so good! It’s so horrific! It’s so heartbreaking!

Sarcasm and Slytherin by orphan_account *favorite*
Plot: After ten years of misery with the Dursleys, Harry Potter learns that he has magic. Except, in this story, it's not a surprise-the only surprise is that there are others like him. Including his twin brother, Julian Potter, the savior of the Wizarding world. This isn't the Harry you think you know.
Characters: Harry, Theo, Blaise, OMC, Hermione, Ron, Neville, James Potter, Luna, Daphne, Snape, Dumbledore
Relationships: none
Warnings: implied/referenced child abuse
Tags: wrong-boy-who-lived, Slytherin Harry, Harry has a twin, Slytherin politics, no pairings before 4th year, potential Dumbledore bashing, James bashing, potential Snape bashing, Draco’s still annoying
My Notes: I’m not sure why it’s now an orphan account or if it will ever be updated, but I’ve seen a lot of people on reddit compare this with Prince of Slytherin (a series I haven’t read because I chose this one over it) so be cautious of that. I straight up want to murder James Potter, though, so that’s a nice thought. I finally finished it! I started this back in early June and I miss it a lot, I spent many hours reading this.

The ones that seek and find (six years in the relationship of harry and luna) by Terapsina

Hi! I’m a big fan of your work!! I am looking for more but unfortunately I feel like I have read all yhe good Harry Potter docs on Ao3. Do you have any recs?
Sorry for the delay, I just know that whenever I make rec list it usually ends up taking a while.
With that, Harry Potter fics are a big genre. Just saying Harry Potter in general really isn’t that specific to me so this is across genres/character focuses/you name it.
Also, as usual, I’ve been on fanfiction longer and have amassed more favorites there. Some of these are cross posted to Ao3. Similarly, a lot are unfinished, this personally doesn’t bother me but if it bothers you take heed.
Also, you’ll see my embarrassing obsession with Tom Riddle. So, heads up for that.
Stepbrother (Tom Riddle/Hermione Granger, period piece, in which the two remind me a lot of Nabokov)
Cat Among the Pigeons (Tom Riddle/Lily Evans, Psycho-Pass Detective AU, in which I am a beta actually so my promoting this goes without saying)
Til Death Do Us Part (Tom Riddle/Harry Potter, Voldemort wins AU, which for me does very well with the concept of immortality and what exactly Tom is supposed to do after he wins)
This Tangle of Thorns (Tom Riddle/Hermione Granger, modern AH AU, a full on Nabokov inspired fic which I enjoy because Lolita)
Delusional (Tom Riddle/Harry Potter, sort of. Harry wins the war, goes crazy, checks into a mental hospital. Or he’s not crazy and Voldemort is as unkillable as Palpatine.)
Harry Potter and the Natural 20 (OC insert, D&D inspired, shameless crack. I mostly enjoy the beginning of this but it makes me laugh enough to recommend.)
