Currently Reading: Too many things, but I’m slowly working on it. We’ve got: what the hell did i just read / futuristic violence and fancy suits (jason pargin), where i end (sophie white), dracula (bram stoker), my heart is a chainsaw (stephen graham jones) and the last two volumes of trigun. However, my copy of family business (jonathan sims) just arrived so we’ll see what will happen next

Para: Coffee Break || Kyla & Wren

“Hi, Manny,” Kyla greeted the barista as he prepared her usual order- a vanilla bean frap with extra vanilla and two shots of espresso, plus strawberry purée and raspberry syrup to make it pink. It satisfied her on an aesthetic level as well as on a caffeine level, and it was a cold drink that was basically an adult milkshake, so it was refreshing during the day. It all combined to making it the best drink. She grabbed a straw and opened it, blowing the paper wrapper off of it and into the trashcan. “Thank you! See you soon!” She used the straw to doodle a heart into the whipped cream at the top before going to sit down; seeing someone her age and approaching her. “Hi! I haven’t seen you here before. Are you from the institute or do you live nearby?”

Interview with a Character!

For this interview, we have Kyla Bateman, a lovely young woman from a countryside farm in the untamed woods of the northwest. Recently, Kyla has had a bit of a, shall we say “location change,” and we’re here to get to know her better!

1. Are you named after anyone?

My maid’s name, Asher, was from my grandmother on my father’s side. She was a lovely woman, the one who taught me how to sew. So I am Kyla Asher Bateman.

2. When was the last time you cried?

A few days ago— but it wasn’t bad! I cry when I’m stuck, or angry, or even when I’m embarrassed. This time had been a passage in a book with so many new words that I had to keep pausing my reading and search for them, it was all very frustrating. And of course Aure— the lord of the forest walked in and thought he’d done something wrong, haha.

3. Do you have any kids?

No, and I don’t want any. I saw what my mother went through with my younger brother, and I’m not wont to repeat that.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

I try not to. It was...discouraged at home, and the Fair Folk here don’t seem to understand it? It passes over their heads, and some of them even get upset with me, they relate it to lying. His lordship has begun to pick up on it, but he’s got a long road ahead.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Aside from their face? Perhaps their hands. Funnily enough, that was one of the first things I noticed about— um, anyway. Anything that sticks out, usually. Like Gregory’s earrings or Sveta’s hair.

6. Eye color?

Just brown, the color of soil.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

I’m not sure what a movie is, but I love to read scary stories! Especially the ones with happy endings. So can I choose both?

8. Any special talents?

I think I have an aptitude for magic, specifically transforming spells. I don’t know much, but his lordship says I’m advancing rather quickly. I’m always learning, with him.

9. Where were you born?

Like my brother, I was born at home, in my parent’s bed on a horribly rainy night, and I lived my whole life on that farm.

10. What’re your hobbies?

I do love to sew, and I’m not good at it but I find I enjoy reading as well. His lordship still hasn’t taken me traveling with him, but I would love to see the sights as he does.

11. Have any pets?

If the animals on the farm count, then at least two dozen, haha!

12. What sports do you play/have played?

Sports? Oh! Recreation. I never had the time. After schooling I’d always be called back home to help with the chores, so I suppose I could count the labor I did there. I harvested crops, fed the animals, brought in and chopped firewood, among other things.

13. How tall are you?

I’m…not sure. I took my father’s height, and was taller than my mother by the time I turned 16. But in the years following, I didn’t think to measure myself. I’m sure there’s a rotting door trim somewhere at home with marks of my height on them, but I can tell you that if I stand on my toes, I can just barely touch his lordship’s shoulders when I stretch my arms.

14. Favorite subject in school?

Oh I loved everything in school. I loved to learn, to hear about new things, new discoveries and points of view. I especially loved hearing stories with the most fantastical creatures in them— and I suppose I’m living such a story now!

15. Dream job?

As a girl, I’d always dreamt of opening a dress shop in town, where I’d see enough people to keep the business running, but not too many like in the city. It would be nice to have such a thing, but many of the Fair Folk don’t wear clothing, so I think my customers would be very few, haha.
