This was very much fuelled by my recent re-watch of Downton Abbey, and the idea would not leave me alone.

“Were you ever going to tell me?” She asks, her eye fixed on him, unyielding in her gaze. He sighs and goes back to folding the shirt in his hands dropping it in the bag in front of him.
“I wrote you a letter,” he replies, picking it up off of the small end table near his couch and he hands it to her. She snatches it from his hand, the envelope crumbling slightly as she folds her arms again, “It explains everything.”
She chuckles humourlessly, shaking her head at him, “You really weren’t going to tell me to my face? You were just going to leave?”
“Em,��� he sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose as he’s forced into a conversation he’d tried to avoid for both of their sakes, “You would have tried to talk me out of it.”
“Of course, I would have,” she exclaims, stepping closer to him, shaking her head, “It’s war, Aaron. I read the papers I know what’s going on over there,” the next words catch in her chest, scratching at her insides as they make their way out, “You could die.”

All My Ships
(with some added context sometimes)
Claire Kincaid x Jack Mccoy (Law and Order), tbh this was the first relationship I saw that made me have butterflies and squealy feelings after something bad happened to me, and made me think about entering another relationship some day. They just had this chemistry and the looks they gave each other, i hate it was never officially confirmed expect maybe in like season 9, but tbh I've never watched past a bit of season 7 cause Claire was my OG, my fashion inspo, my raison d'être.
Sybil Crawley x Tom Branson (Downton Abbey), the way they killed her off, absolutely heartbreaking I've never managed to fully watch that episode again. They deserve to be happy in Ireland with all the babies they want and her career, with the perfect husband who backs her up whenever.
Hermione Granger x Fred Weasley (Harry Potter), I can't even remember why I started liking these two, it was so long ago probably came across a fanedit or a fic by accident. I just love the funny one and serious one matching, and finding that they're actually more similar than you think. But a PSA to everyone interested in this ship, writers sometimes don't say if Fred lives or dies in their fics and getting to the end thinking these sweet characters who love each other are going to get through this with the author being pretty unclear about the final battle only to be hit with "it's been two months since Fred's death" BOOOO!!!
JJ x Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds), specifically in fics where she doesn't get in a relationship with Will, or it doesn't get to the point where they have Henry, not a huge fan of the honorary uncle/aunt then becoming the kid's stepparent trope. I also don't like to watch the show much anymore bc I worked in that field and when it's real on your desk everyday, watching that mixed with the sappy family stuff (also garcia, not a fan) is not enjoyable anymore.
Ellie Bishop x Nick Torres (NCIS), thank god a lot of their episodes were after Abby left, no offense to Abby lovers but dear god she's pushing 50 at the end, act like it??? I think I'm just into hot people bantering with each other.
Keeley Jones x Jamie Tartt or Roy Kent (Ted Lasso), we only saw J&K together at the beginning when he was more of a prick, but the new and improved Jamie I think could be a good match bc they have similar personalities. I liked Roy and Keeley together, they were really different but a lot of what each other needed. I loved pretty much everybody in that show, except Nate. Nate can go fuck himself.
Emily Rhodes x Aaron Shore (Designated Survivor), ok maybe it is just workplace romances, these guys had some banter, on opposite sides of issues, but why did the writers decide nah we're just playing she's going with Seth, no real buildup on that.
In summary: Workplaces romances, or romances that occur when two people are forced to be in the same environment. I've never had an office fling, all the men were way older than me and in much higher positions, the few that weren't yeah no thanks, or like a summer camp forced encounter thing but I live vicariously through these people having to be professional in public and absolutely smitten in private and seeing it melt through. I'm also sucker for the guy loves her more and realizes before she does.
These aren't all the ships I've liked in my life. I was in middle school during this site's most infamous shipping thing, can you guys guess what I was reading on my phone after I was supposed to be asleep? Here's an abridged list of some of the ships I've liked over the past 10ish years doing this: Sherlock/John Watson, Destiel, Doctor(10)/Rose, Dan/Phil, and those are just the really big ones that made it through the preteen fugue state, I do get a mini heart attack every time someone in my day-to-day life mentions any of these expect doctor who.

Undercover
The Naval Crime Scene investigation come across a con man that’s working, they enlist the help of the BAU.
Word Count - 1192
Characters - Reader x BAU x NCIS
‘How long am I going to be doing this?’ You asked, placing the necklace around your neck as it held a small camera.
‘Only long enough to get enough info.’ Emily said, handing you and ear piece. You looked in the mirror, looking at your outfit. The red dress, coming down to your shins, a decent length, with heels the outfit, sophisticated and elegant. You flicked your hair off your shoulders and tucked it behind your ears.
‘Here we go.’ You sighed as you walked down the hall with Emily behind you. As you made it into the room where everything was set you saw Morgan and DiNozzo dressed and ready to go. Hotch stood and walked over to you when you entered.
‘Morgan and DiNozzo will be with you, in the hall positioned with the audience.’ You nodded listening to him as you checked the camera was working.
‘Remember he’s dangerous.’ Hotch told you. You looked up to him with a raised eyebrow.
‘I know, don’t so anything you wouldn’t do.’ You said to Hotch as you picked up your clutch up.
‘See you on the other side.’ You said as you left the hotel room.
‘Are you sure she’s up for it?’ DiNozzo asked.
‘Why would she not be?’ Hotch quizzed.
‘I don’t know… she’s too…’ DiNozzo started but couldn’t find the right words.
‘Innocent?’ Morgan commented.
‘Sweet?’ Morgan came beside him. Tony nodded and Morgan laughed
‘Just wait and see.’ Morgan said patting his shoulder.
You watched as he entered into the stage, clapping along with everyone else. A s he stood still on the stage looking over everyone. As he stepped of the stage, you heard Hotch in your ear.
‘He’s going to ask you a question about your past, and why you want to further your business career.’ You took that in, watching as Tyler walked along the row.
‘Sell me this pen.’ He asked, the man two seats to your right. You heard Aaron and panicked voices as they learned that he had changed his way. As he made it to you, you smiled up to him.
‘Sell me this pen.’ He asked, you took the pen, running it between your fingers, you looked up at him and you could feel everyone watching you.
You reached into your bag, grabbing a bit of paper. Handing it to him, he took it.
‘Do me a favour? Write your name or number on the bit of paper.’ You said as you sat up straighter.
‘I don’t have a pen.’ He said smirking at you, you placed the pen end in-between your thumb and forefinger. He took it.
‘Exactly, supply and demand.’ You told him, smiling as you heard whispers around you. He smiled before nodding.
After he had gone around the whole audience, he walked back down towards the stage he spoke
‘Those who sold me the pen, come and join me on the stage.’ As you stood up and fixed your dress, you walked along behind him, once he was on the stage, he dropped a hand for you to grab onto, you pulled yourself up into the stage, smiling as he let go of your hand, not before gentle brushing your wrist gentle with his thumb. When you turned around and looked at everyone else, you noticed there were five men and only you.
As the audience sat and watched you, you felt a hand on your back.
’This ladies and gentlemen, this is who will be the boos of you.’ He told them, you looked over the audience and saw Morgan and DiNozzo sitting admits the large audience Derek tapped his ears and you nodded slightly.
You and the other 5 men walked into the mansion, you at the front of them, beside Tyler. Your heels clicking throughout the hall.
‘This is where you’ll be working, looking over everything.’ Tyler said, everyone started walking towards the desks.
‘Not you darling.’ He said, you cringed at the name but you turned around and smiled sweetly at him.
‘You’ll be working with me.’ You nodded and headed towards the office with him. As you entered his office, he closed the door behind him.
‘So what do you need me to do?’ You asked him, sitting yourself on his desk, crossing your ankles together.
‘Sell the higher stuff, they were just copying you, you were the only real one who could sell these items.’ He stated.
‘What are the products?’ You enquired, he started walking over to the wall, when he pressed a button it opened and a safe appeared. He typed in the code and it opened, you looked over the packets of the white substances.
‘We need confirmation of what it is.’ You heard Hotch, you took a step forward.
‘Is that what I think it is?’ You quizzed him.
‘The purest and finest in the town.’ He said confidently, you couldn’t help but smile, knowing this was all on camera.
‘Why me?’ You asked him confused.
‘You have the balls to do what’s needed, plus a pretty face won’t harm anybody.’ He commented, you smiled sweetly at him as you walked closer to the cocaine.
‘We’ve got everything we need, try and get them to the front door.’ Hotch said, you stood up form looking at the cocaine.
‘When do I start?’ You asked him.
‘Tomorrow.’ He stated, you nodded.
‘Good, I want to take everyone out for drinks.’ You told him as you looked over all the men, slouching at their desks.
‘Now?’ He asked confused.
‘If it’s okay with you, of course.’ You said to him, he smiled and nodded.
‘Let me tell the boys.’ He said you nodded and watched as he went out and told them, they all cheered and started heading out.
‘We’re coming now guys.’ You said quietly, as you joined onto the end of the group, watching as they all made their way downstairs to come face to with Derek, DiNozzo, Hotch, Gibbs and Ziva.
’Freeze, arms above your head.’ You heard Derek said, you stood behind all the men, watching as the five raised your arms but Tyler didn’t, he started to turn, but you were there.
‘You knew?’ He asked, you nodded. Anger took over his face, he stepped forward coming towards you. You braced yourself for him hitting you, but as he swung his left arm you grabbed it, twisting and bringing him to the ground.
‘You’re under arrest for suspicion of profiting through contraband notes, cocaine and conspiracy to commit murder, anything you do or say with be held against you…’
‘You.’ He cut in, you tightened his handcuffs and he let out a yelp.
‘During the court of law, you can have an attorney present if you cannot afford one, you may have one provided.’ You finished, watching as the group of men watching you with wide eyes. You grabbed his collar and started leading him out the door, towards one of the patrol cars.
‘You were right.’ DiNozzo commented to Derek, Derek smirked has he handcuffed one of the men.
‘Yeah, false elusion.’ Derek said as him and DiNozzo walked out together.

Twilight Zone” Part 2
AN: Another one shot in the Twilight Zone Universe. Not sure if I’ll come back to this universe or not but I sure do love it.
Pairing: Gibbs x fem!reader
Original Story
“I just . . . I don’t see why I need to invite everyone over.”
You roll your eyes as you continue preparing food. “It’s a Halloween party Jethro. Lord knows a bunch of my friends are coming, you should have some of yours too.”
He leans against the counter, his arms crossed against his chest, “I get along great with your friends.”
You laugh at that. “No. Try again. You say hello. Stick around for about twenty minutes and engage in small talk where you let out a few grunts, and then you go find the kids and spend most of the night with them.”
He leans over, “Yeah. . . well I like our kids.”
“This year, it’s your people. Abbey helped me create the guest list. Apparently, you’ve even managed to make friends outside of NCIS.”
His head whips towards you, “Excuse me?”
“Agent Fornell. Lieutenant Colonel Mann. And Jenny had quite a few other people from within NCIS to invite.”
He groans, “I hate that you and Jenny have become friends.”
You snort, “No you don’t.”
The simple fact was, you and Jenny had clicked. After several moments of shocked silence after your first meeting she had walked over to you and started a conversation. There had been no talk about Jethro, just random things. The two of you had started doing a girls' night after which Ziva and Abbey had started to join in.
Other than that, your interactions with NCIS were still next to non-existent. And you had been sick of not being involved in such a major part of Jethro’s life, so this year you had dedicated your annual Halloween party to his friends.
“All I’m saying is Daisy is six and Grayson is eight. We don’t have many trick or treating nights left with them. I think we have two until Grayson wants to go off with just his friends.”
“Which you won’t allow because of sick twisted people.”
He shrugs, “Aaron and Mike are all ready to go into stealth mode. And if I get really desperate I’ll send Ziva.”
“Overprotective dad, party of one.”
“And this is supposed to be Jamie’s last year trick or treating and he doesn’t even want to go.”
Ahhh. That explains it. Jethro has never been very good with the kids growing up. When Aaron had done the same thing, he had pouted for two days straight. And the day Aaron had decided to go to George Washington University instead of UVA or William and Mary, Jethro had taken him out to buy new baseball supplies.
You wash your hands and then go to him. You wrap him in a hug and he hugs back. “Kids grow up Jehtro. It’s part of life.”
“We should have had one more.” He grumbles and you laugh.
“Well. You still have me.”
He smiles at that and looks down at you, “I’ll always have you? Right?”
“Damn straight marine.”
He smiles and swoops down to kiss you. When you pull away you follow up with one more kiss and ask, “Can you handle the dishes? I want to make sure Daisy and Grayson are ready to go.”
“I’ve got them. Go ahead.”
You head up the stairs to see what’s going on. Aaron and Mike are waiting in the hallway and you pause at the sight of them. They haven’t dressed up in years, and the sight of them right now has your lips twitching. They’ve obviously raided Jethro’s closet for old NCIS and NIS clothes. They have the windbreakers on, along with the ball caps. Underneath they’re in jeans and button down shirts.
You lean against the wall, “Are you trying to give your dad a stroke?”
Aaron smiles, “Daisy asked us to dress up.”
Ahh. That explained it. None of the men in your family were able to tell that little girl no. “I see. What about Jamie, Gray, and the princess herself?”
Aaron shrugs, “Jamie was a bit more resistant until I asked him to do this for her.”
You lean against the railing and wait. Jamie is the first one to come out. He has on his “nice clothes”; slacks and a button down. Along with an NCIS jacket and hat that are much too big for him to wear.
You stifle a laugh. Jamie was eager to grow up and be just like his big brothers. “How do I look?”
“Very official.”
He beams and goes to lean against the wall, copying Aaron’s stance. You wait several more minutes before going to knock on Grayson’s door. You had bought his costume this year, and you knew what waited on the other side of the door. When he steps out dressed as an over muscled Batman he does his best to look menacing. There’s a quick, “I’m Batman.” And some coughing before you direct him to the wall.
Finally you go to Daisy’s room. You knock once and the door flies open. You smile at the sight of her. She’s beaming. In fact, she’s been beaming since she found this costume. She’s nearly vibrating now that she has it on. You look back at the boys who are all smiles. And before you can say anything she yells out, “I need to show daddy!” And runs down the stairs.
The boys quickly follow, leaving you behind. You scowl. You had created each of those kids from scratch, had gone through labor to breathe them into the world, and they were excited to show Jethro their costumes? Figures.
You take the stairs quickly, and arrive downstairs to find Daisy hugging Jethro’s leg while he straightens your boys' NCIS uniforms. You had expected some sort of dismissal. He had never wanted the boys to think of NCIS as the family business, and you doubted they would. But you can also see a spark in his eye. “If you’re going to wear the stuff, wear it right boys.” He looks up at you and smiles, “This is good brand awareness.” You roll your eyes, “And did you see? We have a giraffe in the house? I told you we could have fit that eight food Christmas tree.” Daisy giggles. “And we ap[arently know Batman. The next time we’re stuck on a case, I can call in extra help.” Grayson beams. And you smile.
Daisy tugs on Jethro’s sleeve, “What are you going as daddy?”
He pauses for a second, before he straightens, “The boss.”
He makes a show out of putting his NCIS cap and wind breaker back on. He points at your three oldest boys, “I’m boss tonight. Got it?”
The three of them answer together, “Got it boss.”
You can’t hold back the laughter this time. You’re saved from having to say anything by the doorbell ringing. You frown. Trick or treating isn’t due to start for another half and a half. “Jethro, can you get the candy?”
“On it.”
You head to the door, and instead of kids you find, “Tony.”
The young man smiles and moves in for a hug. “Mrs. Gibbs!”
You smile and pat his back, before you hear Jethro yell, “Dinozzo! Get off my wife!”
He withdraws immediately, “Sorry boss!”
A scowling Jethro comes up behind you, “You’re early.”
“Am I?”
He is, and he knows it too. His eyes focus on Jethro’s NCIS gear, “We got a case boss?”
“No. I’ve got a new team.” He jerks his head to the kids.
They all call out greetings and Tony smiles, “Cool. Mini Gibbs!” He slips inside. Over the next half hour more and more people arrive early. You suppose the draw of seeing into the personal life of Leeroy Jethro Gibbs is too hard to resist.
Ziva is the next to arrive. She’s only wearing a witches hat, but it’s enough. McGee follows dressed as Spock. And then there’s Abby, she arrives dressed as Marilyn Monroe. She makes a huge deal about the kids’ costumes. Jenny is up next. She isn't in a costume, but she smiles at the sight of the kids, “I see I have some new agents.”
“Daisy asked them to dress up, and none of them know the word no when it comes to her.”
“Ahh. Well, I’m going to go introduce myself as their director and all.”
You laugh and send her on her way. Ducky and Jimmy come next. Ducky is dressed as a train conductor, and Jimmy is in plain clothes. You watch in amusement as your husbands’ people interact with your family. It’s a nice sight. And despite his grumbling you can tell Jethro is happy to have them here, even if no one else can tell.
“Okay. Time for me to take these guys trick or treating.”
And there’s his escape. Abbey jumps up and down, “Can I come? Please!”
Daisy joins, “Yeah daddy, can Abby and Ziva come too?”
Daisy has been positioned in between the two women all night, and in that time she’s managed to capture their hands and not let go. There’s something soft in Ziva’s eyes as she watched Daisy. She has a soft spot for your daughter.
“Fine by me.”
Jethro stops by you on the way out, and swoops down to peck your lips, “I will be back.”
“I know. You’re a bit like a boomerang like that.”
He smiles, and this time when he kisses you, he cups your face. When he pulls back he whispers, “Love you.” Against your lips.
You smile as he follows the kids out. You turn back around to find a stunned room of people looking at you. You close the door, “He’s not special agent Gibbs all the time, you know.”
Tony winces, “Until about six months ago, I was pretty sure Gibbs was a robot who ran on coffee.”
There seems to be some sort of agreement amongst his friends. You go back into the living room right as the doorbell rings. “Can someone get that?”
McGee volunteers, “I’ve got it Mrs. Gibbs.”
You listen as you search for what you’re looking for. Apparently Agent Fornell and Agent Mann have arrived. You smile as Fornell asks, “So, is she real or a blow up doll?”
You come back in with what you needed, “I’m very real, I assure you Agent Fornell.”
The balding man’s eyes go wide, “Dear Lord. I thought you were pulling my leg Jen.”
“She wasn’t.” You settle on the couch, and place a photo album on the coffee table. “This might help you with separating the man Jethro is at work with the man he really is.”
It’s Ducky who reaches forward and opens it. The first picture is of you and Jethro at a carnival. It had been your third date. With cameras not as readily available back then, you didn’t have as many photos of you and Jethro together. There are, however, plenty of your wedding, of him with the kids as newborns, and him in uniform. There are more and more of the two of you together as you had begun owning cameras. In each of the photos Jethro is smiling and happy.
You leave them to continue looking through it as you put out the food. An hour later Jethro and the kids are back. You listen as Fornell and Mann rib your husband for some of the silly photos they had seen. Ziva and Abby make a mad dash for the photo album. You listen as Jethro tries to defend certain photos and as the kids add in their own two cents.
You’re in the middle of getting out even more food, because agents put it away, when Jethro’s arms circle your waist, and he kisses the back of your head. “I love you, have I told you that recently?”
“Every single day since we got married.” You turn in his arms and kiss him, “I love you something fierce marine.”
Jethro just smiles, “You realize this mean they’re going to be over for every major holiday, right? They don’t know the meaning of personal space.”
“Just call them what they are Jethro: Family.”

You matter - Aaron Hotchner x fem! reader
A/N: So a lot of you seemed to like my last one about hotch and trust me i have plenty more! I also have some for spencer and am currently writing a mini series for derek so if anyone’s interested in that let me know. Enjoy. Warnings: Mentions of a case, swearing Word count : 1,762 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I sat in the lobby of the hotel; my head held in my hands. This case had taken a toll on all of us. All we wanted to do was to get back to Quantico and get a goodnights rest in our own homes, in our own beds. But apparently mother nature had other plans. A storm had been brewing all night – thunder, lightning, rain – the whole lot. So, we’d been made to stay another night in the local hotel. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad hotel. If anything, it’s one of the nicer ones we’ve stayed in throughout the years, but the frustration from not being able to go home grew in all of us. I was so wrapped in my own thoughts I didn’t notice someone taking a seat next to me.
“You okay?” Hotch’s voice made me jump. I placed my hand over my chest.
“God you scared me.” I said chuckling. Hotch smiled at me.
“Sorry, you just looked like you could use the company.” He replied. I sighed.
“Yeah. I guess I could.” He studied my face for a moment. “
Are you okay?” He seemed hesitant in his words. Mine and Hotch’s friendship is quite a casual one. We occasionally see each other outside of work, I’ve even watched jack for him when Jess wasn’t able to. Hotch had confided in me with some of his deepest secrets. Nightmares, regrets, worry’s about not being a good father. But I listened. We’ve never discussed my thoughts, my feelings. And that’s okay. I don’t want to be a burden to him, or any of the team. So, whenever they had a problem, I would sit and listen. I’d comfort them, try my best to give them advice or simply let them get their feelings out. But when it came to myself, I push all those feelings down. Until my key hits the door.
“Hey.” Hotch nudged my arm. I hadn’t realised I’d been gazing at the wall ahead of me, once again caught up in my own thoughts.
“What’s going on? Talk to me.” He said softly. I ran my fingers through my hair and sighed.
“It’s just this case you know. I get that our job is to get inside the mind of these psychos, but I can never understand why people hurt kids.” I explained.
“We can never truly understand why these people do what they do.” Hotch replied.
“That’s not true. In most of our cases, I do understand. I’m able to see the reasons as to why they kill. I never agree with them before you think I’m insane.” Hotch chuckled stiffly at my words.
“But when it comes to kids, I never understand it. There’s no logic, no sense to it. And this case especially. As if torturing them wasn’t enough, why then display the dead bodies for the family to see? I mean the families have been through enough, the child went through enough. I thought this guy would have some shred of humanity left not to fucking humiliate and scar them all afterwards.” I could feel the anger building up inside of me. There’s something I hadn’t told the team. And now it was about to come bursting out.
“I know they have no emotions. I know they don’t think the right way. I know that biologically that there is something wrong with them. I know the facts. But it still bugs me. And the fact he was fucking laughing when we brought him in. That sick bastard.” I stood up and started pacing. Tears were threatening to spill from my eyes as I ran my shaking hands through my hair trying to cling on to any sense of calm I had left.
“I hate him.” I spat. All hope of remaining collected went out the window. Hotch stood up and came towards me.
“Y/N, listen to me calm down.” He reached out to place his hands on my arms.
“No. This isn’t fair. Abbey didn’t do anything”
“Abbey? The last girl he killed?” Hotch asked but I ignored him.
“She was seven. SEVEN HOTCH. All she wanted to do was go to school, live her life, play with her friends. Instead, she ends up being kidnapped, brutally torched and murdered then get’s her dismembered body presented on her front lawn like she was some kind of abstract art.” I was hysterical at this point. Crying, yelling – I couldn’t stop myself.
“I hate him. I hate him. I hate him.” I pounded my fists against Hotch’s chest with every sentence, until I eventually wore myself out and collapsed into his arms sobbing. He held me, letting me get everything out. I could feel his hands gently rubbing my back, soothing me. We were now crouched down on the floor and at some point Hotch must have moved us to a corner somewhere as his back was resting against a wall. When I eventually stopped crying, I noticed I was half sprawled across his lap. I didn’t have the energy to stand so I just shifted myself, so I was comfortable and able to face him. He gently brushed the hair out of my face. I couldn’t meet his gaze. I was embarrassed to have lost it like that.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.” He replied, softly
“Can I ask you a question?” I nodded at his words.
“Why is this effecting you so much? I understand this case has been a brutal one but it’s not the first time we’ve dealt with this level of torture. It’s certainly not the first child killer we’ve dealt with. So, what’s changed?” He took my hands in his and begun to rub small circles around them, offering me a small sense of comfort. His tone was soft. I could tell he was asking from a place of genuine care for me.
“I knew her.” I confessed. Hotch’s hand stilled on mine. “She was my niece.” Hotch looked slightly puzzled at my words.
“But her parents, they’d never seen you before?” He asked.
“Well, you know how they told you she was adopted when she was a child? And that her birth mother passed away a few months after they took abbey into their care? Her mum was my sister. Making abbey my niece.” I explained in a low tone.
“H-how long have you known?” Hotch questioned.
“I’ve known for a while. I knew before we took the case.” I replied.
“You knew this entire time and you didn’t say anything? Not even when we found her?” Hotch sounded shocked.
“I just couldn’t face it at the time. We needed to find the Unsub and I didn’t have time to let my feelings get in the way. They weren’t important.” I said looking at the ground. Hotch sighed . I felt him placed his finger under my chin and gently guide my eyes up to meet his.
“Listen to me okay, your feelings matter. They will always matter. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for you to have seen that yet continue to work the case and I’m deeply sorry for your loss. But please, never hide your feelings from us. From me. You’ve helped me on countless occasions, and I apologize if I haven’t made you feel like I could return the favour.” I shook my head.
“No this isn’t you Hotch. I know I could’ve mentioned it to you. I just –“ I hesitated before continuing. Hotch continued to stroke my hand softly.
“I’ve spent so long having to just deal with my emotions alone. I’ve never really had anyone who cared enough to listen, so I’ve just learnt to keep it to myself. So now I have you, a-and the team, it’s just hard to open up you know?” I explained. Hotch gently reached up and placed his hand on my cheek. My eyes fluttered closed as I leant into his touch. I didn’t realise how much I craved his touch until now.
“I understand. But I hope you do know that you can talk to me. About anything. Whenever you need me, just come, and find me. Yeah?” I nodded slightly at his words. I could feel tears beginning to slip from my eyes again. Hotch slowly wiped them away with his thumb.
“Thank you. For everything.” I whispered.
“You don’t need to thank me.” He replied in soft tone, smiling at me. “I love you too much to watch you suffer alone.” His voice was low, almost at a whisper. My eyes snapped up to meet his.
“Y-you love me?” Hotch sighed at my words.
“I’m not expecting you to feel the same, but you needed to know that you’re loved. By no one more than me.” He explained. I just starred at him trying to process what he’d just said. I’d had feelings for hotch ever since I met him, but I’d never been 100% sure until now. Slowly, I leant forward and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. It wasn’t long, but enough for him to know I reciprocated his feelings. As I pulled away, he looked at me slightly shocked at my actions. I looked at him nervously. Maybe he didn’t love me. Maybe he was just saying to make me feel better. Shit, what had I done? Before I could regret my choice any longer, Hotch leant forward to reconnect my lips with his but this time it was deeper – with a lot more passion. He cupped my face in his hands softly, as if he was scared to lose me. I shifted on his lap, so I was essentially straddling him. I felt him smile against my lips as he placed his hands just above my hips, holding me close to him. My fingers interwind in his black hair tugging slightly. Eventually we had to pull away for air.
“Hotch I-“
“Aaron. Call me Aaron.” He said cutting me off by placing his finger to my lips. I smiled at him. The smile he returned to me in that moment was brighter and fuller of joy than anything I’d seen in the past. My cheeks flushed red as I suddenly became shy, so I leant forward and buried my head in the crook of his neck. This caused him to chuckle, sending warm vibrations throughout my chest. He wrapped his arms around me and held me flush against him. We stayed like that for a while, just enjoying our newfound love for one another.

All's Fair - Chapter 1
Emily and Aaron have loved each other since they were children. War might be the thing that finally brings them together, but it could also be the thing that tears them apart forever.
A Hotchniss AU, set in 1917 and beyond.

This is something I've been working on for a little while, and is very much inspired by a recent re-watch of Downton Abbey.

April 1917
Emily had always loved the spring.
The sun was warm when it hit her face, and the days were longer. Leaving her more hours to spend wandering her mother’s estate. Just her and a book as she escaped the expectations she would never live up to. She’d walk as far as she could away from the house and find a spot to waste the day away, hoping that somehow, in some way, her life would turn into more than this.
She sits in amongst the grass, one hand holding up her poetry book and the other running through the daises she had chosen to sit by. They were her favourite flower, something beautiful in their simplicity, of how they grew wherever they could.
“You know they’re weeds, right?”
Emily rolls her eyes playfully as she closes her book and puts it down next to her, looking up at the man who had disturbed her peace, the only person she’d ever allow to do so.
“You tell me every spring,” she replies, putting her hand over the top of her eyes to block out the sun so she can look up at him, a smirk on her face, “Shouldn’t you be working, Aaron?”
He shakes his head at her, his hands on his hips as he looks down with a smile she liked to think was just for her.
“I would be if my boss's daughter wasn’t right in the way of where I’m supposed to be working.”
She looks behind him to see the lawn mower, and scrunches up her nose, “That sounds very boring,” she says, patting the grass next to her, “Come sit with me.”
“Em,” he sighs, “You know I’d love to but-”
“Please,” she says, smiling tightly at him, and turning serious, “I could do with a friend today.”
They’d grown up together. He was only three years older than her, the son of her mother’s old caretaker. When they were kids, the difference between their lives, between what was expected of them both didn’t matter to anyone. The fact she was the only heir of the estate and he was the son of the live-in caretaker didn’t matter. It still didn’t matter to her and Aaron, and Emily knew he was one of her only friends. He was the only one she completely trusted to have her best interests at heart. Everyone else she knew through her mother, and there was always a seed of doubt about their intentions.
After Aaron’s father died, he was the obvious option for the job - he’d watched him do it his whole life, much more hands-on with the work than his brother Sean ever had been. It was then, Emily just shy of her 20th birthday, that her mother suddenly deemed her friendship with Aaron inappropriate, and tried to stop them from spending any time together.
It was one of the reasons she’d walk the grounds for hours, keeping him company whilst he worked, wanting nothing more than to spend time with him.
She knew she loved him, and that he loved her back, but they could never acknowledge it. Trapped in the lives they’d been forced into by chance and happenstance.
Aaron sits down next to her, never one to be able to say no to her, and picks up the book she’d discarded on the grass. He smiles as he reads the title from the front page.
“Mountain Interval by Robert Frost?” He asks, his eyebrow raised at her as she rolls her eyes, reaching for the book he purposely holds out of her reach, “You and your poetry.”
“It’s one of the few things I can enjoy around here that Mother approves of,” Emily says, sighing as he opens the book in front of her, giving up on trying to get it back, “Plus, she can’t read French as well as I can, so I can buy all the racy ones and she won’t know.”
Aaron chuckles at her, “Robert Frost though? A bit more…simple than what you usually go for.”
She smiles as she flops back onto the grass, looking up at the sky. “That’s why I like it,” she explains, turning her head to look at him, “Just because it’s simple doesn’t make it any less beautiful.”
He returns her smile before looking back at the book, reading the first page to himself as they fall into companionable silence before he reads the last few lines out loud.
“Two roads diverged in a wood,
And I− I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference”
Emily ignores the flutter in her belly as she so often did when he was around, the pull towards him that she felt all the time. So much between them went unspoken, and she knew it always would. That nothing could happen between them, that a fantasy life where she got to be happy with him would always be the road that they could never travel.
“Well,” she says, swallowing down the lump that had formed in her throat as she covers it with a smile, “If you get bored with being the caretaker of the estate, you could have a career in professional poetry reading.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he deadpans, finally closing her book and handing it back to her.
“Actually,” she says, sitting back up, “I refuse to let you do that. What would I ever do if you weren’t here.”
His smile falters for a second, guilt he knew he deserved to feel like a vice around his heart. He thinks of the letter he’s already written her, one he’ll leave for her to find after he’s gone. He knew she was the only person who would be able to talk him out of it, his love for her his Achilles heel, so he’d kept it from her. Asked her mother to do the same when he handed in his notice just a week ago.
He brushes past it, “Why do you need a friend today?” He asks, and her initial response is a sad smile.
“I’ll give you one guess,” she replies humourlessly, looking back down at the daises on the ground, playing with the soft petals of one between her fingers.
“Your mother?” He asks, and she chuckles.
“Isn’t it always her,” she sighs sadly, shaking her head, her body still thrumming with anger over the news her mother had so casually delivered her over breakfast, “She…” she clears her throat, looking up at him as she continues to gauge his reaction, “She told me this morning that one of the Doyles, Ian, asked for my hand in marriage,” she swallows thickly, “And she accepted the offer.”
Aaron feels like his world had come to a stop, his heart seizing in his chest at the mere thought of her married to someone else.
“She…she did what?” He chokes out, his hand balling into a fist. He thinks of the letter he’s already written for Emily, of the look of relief on her mother’s face when he handed in his notice that suddenly made more sense.
“I’ve only met the guy once,” she exclaims, pulling her legs up to her chest, her skirts pooling around her as she wraps her arms around her knees, “He spent the whole night staring at me.”
“How can she do that to you?”
She laughs humourlessly, resting her temple on her knees to look at him, “For the same reason she’s always been able to do anything, Aaron. Because she can. Because I’m close to becoming a spinster-”
“You’re 25,” he replies, his frustration breaking free as he clenches his teeth. It makes her feel better in a twisted way, that he was so affected by the news. It felt nice to know someone else cared so much.
“Well, as she’s said multiple times, she was already married and had me by my age,” Emily replies, “Apparently he’s going to do it officially in a couple of weeks, and it is expected that I say yes.”
“This is insane Emily, it’s 1917. Surely you have a choice these days.”
“Women like me rarely have a choice, Aaron,” she says, sadly closing her eyes to force back the tears she refused to shed, “I have a duty. I was born with one. And that is to marry someone and have children.”
He sighs, shaking his head as he leans forward, and he places his hand on her shoulder, squeezing tightly.
“I’m sorry, Emily.”
“I’m sorry too.”
She thinks it might be the closest they will ever come to admitting in another life, they could have had more.

She barely eats any of her dinner, excusing herself early to her room, her sadness a heavy weight in her stomach. She’s sat on her bed, a book open on her lap, simply staring at the wall. A knock on the door snaps her out of it, and she sighs.
“Come in,” She says, relieved when it opens to reveal JJ, an everpresent kind smile on her face as she steps into Emily’s room, “Oh JJ, I’m glad it's you.”
“Your mother sent me up,” she says, sitting on the edge of Emily’s bed, “She’s worried,” she smiles as Emily rolls her eyes, “She is my boss,” she shrugs.
“Technically Rossi is your boss,” Emily says, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips as she mentions the head butler, “And she’s his boss.”
“Semantics,” JJ says waving it off, picking an invisible bit of lint off of her maid’s uniform, “Are you ok? It can’t have been an easy day.” She asks, and Emily knows she genuinely cares. She was her friend, another member of staff from the house who she knew she could trust.
“Not really,” she admits, closing her book and sighing, “This whole thing with the Doyles is just…it’s ridiculous. We all know the rumours about Ian, he’s a vicious-”
“Wait, what are you talking about?” JJ says, tilting her head as she furrows her brows, “What about the Doyles?”
“Mother told me…” she drifts off, a sick feeling dropping in her stomach, “Wait, what are you talking about?”
JJ hesitates for a second before starting, “You know it’s being reported we’re joining the war in Europe?”
“Yes,” she says, her stomach twisting even further, “I read it in the paper, what's that got to do with anything?”
“Hotch has…well he’s signed up to join the army,” JJ says carefully. It takes a moment for her words to register, for their meaning to wash over Emily.
She stands up, scrambling off of the bed, “He’s done what?”
“It’s the talk of the house,” JJ says, standing up too, “He handed his notice in a week ago, Rossi has advertised for his role. I thought he would have told you.”
Emily chokes out a bitter laugh, “No,” she says, shaking her head, “No, he didn’t tell me.”

He knows it's her the second the door to his home opens, her furious footsteps down the path unmistakable. One of the many things about her he’d recognise anywhere. He turns to look at her, unsurprised to see the fury on her face, the way her arms are tight around herself.
“Were you ever going to tell me?” She asks, her eyes fixed on him, unyielding in her gaze. He sighs and goes back to folding the shirt in his hands dropping it in the bag in front of him.
“I wrote you a letter,” he replies, picking it up off of the small end table near his couch and handing it to her. She snatches it from his hand, the envelope crumbling slightly as she folds her arms again, “It explains everything.”
She chuckles humourlessly, shaking her head at him, “You really weren’t going to tell me to my face? You were just going to leave?”
“Em,” he sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose as he’s forced into a conversation he’d tried to avoid for both of their sakes, “You would have tried to talk me out of it.”
“Of course, I would have,” she exclaims, stepping closer to him, shaking her head, “It’s war, Aaron. I read the papers I know what’s going on over there,” the next words catch in her chest, scratching at her insides as they make their way out, “You could die.”
He places his hand on her elbow and she pulls away from him, the first time ever the always too brief physical affection between them felt too much to bear.
“Emily, I know that, but I have to do it. It’s the right thing to do. It’s my duty, just like you were talking about earlier.”
“Don’t talk to me about duty. And screw the right thing to do,” she shouts, not caring that she sounded selfish, like the spoiled brat everyone always mistook her for. “What about me? You’re really going to just leave me here? If you die…” she drifts off, aware she’s on the precipice of saying one of the many things they never talk about.
Aaron reaches out for her again, his hand on her shoulder. She doesn’t shake it off this time, the tension visibly leaving her body as he touches her.
“If I die…” he says, leading her into saying what he already knew. What he’d written in the letter she had crumbled in her hand. One of them had to say it, and she’d always been braver than him.
“If you die, I’ll spend the rest of my life missing you,” she admits, a crack to her voice as she says it, her eyes shining with tears he knows she won’t shed, “I can’t lose you, Aaron, I…I love you. You know that. Surely you know that.”
For a moment, the world stops. He can no longer hear the chirp of the birds outside his house or feel the warmth of the fire behind them. All he can see, hear or feel is her and this moment they’ve been avoiding for years. The air is thick with it, with the admittance she can’t take back.
“Emily-” he starts, cupping her cheek as he wipes a tear away from her skin. He’d never been quite this close to her before, had never felt the soft skin of her face. She cuts him off, shaking her head at him slightly.
“And I know I’m about to be engaged to someone else, and that there are so many reasons this can’t work, but…I do. I have done since we were kids.”
“I know,” he says, leaning forward so his forehead is against hers, something so intimate about it she heaves in a deep breath, “I know you have, and I love you too.”
“Then stay,” she says desperately, pulling back to look at him, “Stay here and we’ll figure it all out. We can be together.”
“It isn’t that simple,” he replies, desperate in an entirely different way, “I’ve signed up now, if I rescind that I could go to prison for desertion,” he feels a pang in his chest as her chin trembles, the force of the emotions she’d been trained since she was young to hold back clearly taking their toll. “And what about your mother? About the Doyles?”
“I don’t care about any of that,” she says, reaching up and cupping his cheek, “I don’t care. I don’t love him, this is just some business deal my mother has cooked up because she thinks me being married will make me more upstanding…” she drifts off, her desperate rant fading as it turns into an idea, “That’s it. That’s what we can do.”
Aaron uses the hand on her cheek to make her look at him again, confusion colouring his expression as their eyes meet.
“What are you talking about? What can we do?”
She smiles at him, a familiar glint she always had in her eyes when she teased him for being dense.
“We can get married.”
