Tumblr media
Three more days go by, everyday there is a new livestream. You look worse and worse each time, the light in your eyes drifting away, the hope dying away. You have been forced to fight one more time, and it
ended the same way. You gave the poor boy mercy in the final moments of the fight only for him to end his life. You did everything you could to get him to stop but nothing you did made him turn the knife onto you, so you laid on the ground once more holding the young boy in your arms as he bleeded out. On the days you wouldn’t fight he would come in and take his anger out on you, trying out some new knives he had, your body is nothing but a meat sack covered in bruises and scars. You grew tired, no longer fighting against him, the sas has long left you as you wait for the impending end.
~~~
Aaron paces the room as his mind spiralling, it's been over four days since they took you, and concentrating is getting harder with each minute passing. The team got a new lead this morning, Garcia, Reid and Morgan are sitting in the other room going through the geographic profile once more, while the rest of them map out what the next moves of the unsub could be. So far deadends keep being hit but new hope has been lit inside the team, everyone seems to be pushing through the fear of losing you, everyone but Aaron. The door flies open, making everyone's head shoot up as Morgan and Garcia stand there looking shocked.
“We got the location, we got him” Garcia gasps breathless as she sprints into the room carrying her laptop, quickly followed by Morgan and Reid.
“What, you're sure?” JJ eyes brighten up, leaping into action.
“Positive, three hours south from here there's an abandoned underground gymnasium that has a huge pool, there's only two entrances into it” Garcia speaks quickly, Reid lays down the map, pointing it out.
“Also its a 7 hour drive from where they found (Y/n) many years ago, he could have ran from there” Reid adds.
“Let's go then” Hotch orders, and in a split second the team is sprinting out of the room.
~~~
Your energy is gone, you don’t care about staying alert anymore, when you're alone all you do is sleep. Your mind's way of escaping as your body works on healing itself. Someone yanks your head back, waking you up, a quiet noise of pain slips through your lips.
“Morning sunshine” He laughs as he walks in front of you, his sickening smile is one thing you will never get used to.
“What now?” sighing softly, as you stare up at him, as he kneels down staring at you with interest.
“It's time for another fight sweetboy” His chuckles grow louder when you don't react. He’s done it, he’s broken you, there is no strength of fight left inside of you any more.
“Fine, where is he?” You groan softly as he unties your hands, giving you time to stretch, rubbing your sore wrist.
“He’s coming” He smirks at you before removing your chair, and climbing out of the pool, setting up the camera and lights before the door opens.
“Ah Victor, you’re here” He grins at you as your face falls.
“Yes sir” A dark cold voice response, before walking closer making himself visible. He’s grown, he’s bigger than you now, a lot stronger by the looks of it too. His eyes are dead and when he glances at you, there is no look of recognition as he meets your eyes. The boy you once knew is gone, and that's your fault.
“Are you ready, Jupiter?” Ma’am giggles, your eyes glance at her, not even nothing beside Ryan before.
“I’m not fighting him” You shake your head at them.
“Making it easy for me” He smirks darkly at you before jumping down into the pool, his eyes never leaving yours.
“Ryan you don’t have to do this” You try to reason with him, staying still.
“That's not my name” He hisses at you, his eyes narrowing.
“It used to be, do you remember me?” You take a deep breath stepping forward.
“No, I don’t” He scoffs, he slams his eyes shut before reopening them with new rage.
“I bet you do, and you don’t want anything to do with those memories because I hurt you when I left you, Ryan” You speak calmly but firmly keeping eye contact with him.
“Bullcrap, I don’t fucking know you!” He snaps at you, his body lunging towards you, you dodge him.
“Don’t hide from me” His smirk darkness as he watches your slow movements, focusing on your limp.
“Why not, you're analysing me because I’m slow because I'm injured and that's the only way you can beat me” You smirk back at him, knowing his techniques, having discovered them together.
“Oh I could beat your ass easily” He chuckles, advancing on you.
“Lies Ryan lies” You smile at him, watching as a small light appears in his eyes for two seconds. Two seconds of hope then suddenly, he’s got you. A few quick hits in your face and chest to disorientate you, blood drips from your mouth as he eases up for a moment and then you can hear his yells.
“I don’t know you, I don't know Ryan!” He screams as he goes back to using you as a punching bag. You manage to get your leg out, tripping him over as you gasp for air, climbing on top of him, doing your best to pin his arms down.
“You do know Ryan, It's you, and I’m (Y/n), come on man we used to be best friends” You argue, watching as anger flares into his eyes.
“I don’t fucking know you” He snarls at you, and in one quick movement, he flips you both over, winding you. His hands wrap around your throat, pressing down hard as you struggle to breath, forgetting all your training. You try your hardest to find words to speak but nothing can get past your lips, soon everything starts growing darker.
“Forgive you” You cough up, it's barely loud enough as you give up fighting. What is there to fight for anyway, no ones coming to save you anyway. Soon darkness overcomes you and you feel yourself floating.
~~~
It's cold, a cold feeling on your cheeks as fresh air fills your lungs. You gasp, your body shooting up, pushing the coldness away from you, blinking rapidly as your eyes adjust to the dark room.
“(Y/n), (Y/n), It’s okay it’s just us, It’s JJ” A firm but calming voice calls to you, before something soft touches your shoulder. Your head spins around, your eyes landing on her, a weak smile crawls onto your face, before falling away.
“I..I'm dead aren’t I?” Yours words are barely audible as you stare at her, the new hope fading away.
“No, you're alive, we got you” She smiles softly at you, rubbing your back gently.
“Y you came for me?” Your voice wobbles as tears start filling your eyes, a sob begging to escape.
“Of course we did kiddo” Another voice speaks beside you, moving your head slowly you spot Dave kneeling down beside you, wrapping his arm around you which you lean into.
“Th thank you” A sob leaves you as you reach a hand out to JJ, taking her hand in yours earning a soft sadden smile from her.
“Always, we are family” She smiles at you before helping you up. You lean on them both for support, before your eyes scan the room, stopping on the body just a few feet from you.
“Ryan…” Your heart breaks as you stare at him, and the blood pooling underneath him.
“I’m sorry (Y/n)” Dave's soft voice pulls your attention to him and his guilt filled eyes. You can’t focus on that now, you just can’t, you give him a quick nod.
“Let's get the hell out of here” Gulping thickly as you let them lead you to the side of the pool, taking your time.
“Rossi, you got him?” A loud voice calls from the doorway before four agents make their way inside the room.
“Yeah Morgan we got him” Rossi calls back, beckoning him over. Morgan and Prentiss quickly make their way over, smiles of reliefs flooding their faces as their eyes set on you.
“You are a site for sore eyes” Morgan chuckles softly, holding out a hand as you try to climb out, him and Prentiss grabbing your arm gently pulling you up.
“Good to see you too, Morgan” Smiling weakly, leaning into him as Prentiss helps pull the other two up. His arm wraps around you as you use him for support, resting your head on his arm, earning a few back rubs from him.
“Hey, your boss is calling for backup there's more kids than they thought” One of the swat agents speaks up, his hand on his comas.
“Go, we’ll get him out of here” Rossi orders, nodding at Morgan and Prentiss.
“I can get myself out, go help Hotch” You wince a little, pulling away from Morgan's support.
“Not tonight (Y/n)” JJ smiles before wrapping her arm around you once more.
“We’ll see you on top” Prentiss smiles, squeezing your hand before following Morgan and the other agents out.
“You two should go help, I got this” You look down as you speak.
“No kiddo, we aren’t leaving you” Rossi smiles, before taking your arm, helping support you.
“We are never leaving you, ever” JJ chimes in, smiling sadly at you. You smile weakly at them before nodding.
“Then let's get the hell out of here” You declare, a small chuckle leaving you as you let them lead you out.
~~~
You never thought cold air would feel this good, you shiver uncontrollably as you sit on the back of the ambulance, watching your team and swat bring the boys up out of that hell. The normally empty field is filled with flashing lights from police cars and ambulances, your eyes scan the area as you wait for the two members of your team still yet to appear from down below.
“We saved those boys, we saved them!” Her screeching voice causes your eyes to flash over, spotting her in the custody of Morgan. Your eyes meet his and they are filled with anger and hatred, he smiles forcefully at you. Followed behind them is the man you hate the most, he stays quite his eyes scanning the area, stopping once he sees you a gut twisting laugh escapes him as he stares daggers at you.
“You're a waste of talent boy, should have killed you when you were just a kid boy” He screams at you, making Rossi yanking him forwards, his eyes darkening on the man in front of him. You don’t take your eyes off them until you watch them get put in separate police cars and the doors slam closed and their screaming stops. You take a deep breath and the air tastes more clean, a smile pulls at your lips as your eyes meet Rossi, his are filled with sympathy as yours fill with hope. It's over, it's over for good. You turn back to watch the entrance, watching the last few agents walk out, Reid walks out carrying a young boy aged seven in his arms. Your heart breaks as you see the boy cling to Spencer, the tear stained face, but then your heart soars, leaping to your feet as Aaron finally appears. You don’t care about the pain radiating throughout your body as you push your body forward, not caring about the tears sliding down as you focus on him.
“Aaron” You scream out, and he stops spinning around to look at you, his face fills with relief as he walks towards you, faster than his body could take him.
“(Y/n)!” He exclaims, watching as you fall to your knees as you reach him, falling forward into his arms. He lowers you both to the ground gently, his arms wrapped around your body firmly as your body shakes with sobs.
“It's okay, I got you, you're safe now” He strokes your hair as he comforts you, holding you closely. He whispers words of comfort as you cry into his chest, he holds you for a long time allowing you to let it all out.
You two sit there for a long time, even after all the tears have long dried.
“Hey we need to get you checked out” Aaron whispers as he runs his hand over your back.
“Stay with me?” Gulping thickly as you look up at him.
“Always” He smiles, kissing your forehead before taking your hand and pulling you up. “Always” He repeats as he leads you back to the ambulance where Emily and Rossi now wait.
“You two going up to the hospital?” Emily smiles softly, she can’t help but feel relieved every single time she looks at you.
“Yeah” You nod, leaning into Aaron's arm wrapped around you finding comfort in his touch.
“Good, I texted Garcia she's on her way there now, she's worried about you” Rossi adds, smiling lovingly at you.
“What.. Penelopes here.. Why?” You look up at Aaron confused only to watch his face fall.
“Because she cares for you, we all do it's why we are here” He smiles softly at you, before helping you into the ambulance, where the EMTs are waiting.
“Oh, right” You gulp a little, before sitting back down, your eyes staying on Aaron as he sits beside you.
~~~
Once you get to the hospital you don’t get time to have a break before you are wheeled straight into having x-rays and other tests. You are away from Aaron for hours, and it hurts they keep prodding you and questioning you, it's exhausting. Finally they take you to room, and you're alone, fear creeps into you as you wait for Aaron, your heart races faster every second you're alone.
“”Oh my gosh, you're here” She squeals as she runs into the room, her eyes brightening up as she spots you, rushing towards your side being careful not to touch you.
“Penelope” You breathe out, fresh tears sprouting to your eyes as you see the queen of sunshine. “Gosh I missed you” You let out a small whimper as you reach for her hand, her eyes widen before quickly capturing your hand in hers.
“Oh my love, I’m right here” She smiles at you before sitting down, never letting your hand go.
“Where's Aar?” You whisper, feeling groggy from all the drugs.
“He’s talking to the doctor first, sweetie, but that brings us to something” She smiles cheekily at you. “WheN did you start calling him Aar?”
“Before he kissed me” You chuckle softly, closing your eyes as exhaustion starts taking over. You never saw Garcia's mouth fall open, her eyes almost falling out.
“Um Garcia everything okay?” Hotcha asks as he walks in worry filling him instantly.
“Uh yep everything is fine sir” She quickly collects herself, smiling softly as she stands up. “But I should let him rest, you staying here tonight Hotch?”
“I will” Hotch smiles as he notices you still gripping Penelope's hand tightly.
“He's warming up” Penelope comments, glancing down at your hand.
“That he is” He smiles more, moving to your side, sliding his hand over yours, so you can finally let Penelope go.
“So is that why you two kiss?” Penelope can’t hold it back anymore as she makes her way to the door. Hotch's head shot up, catching her knowing look, he can’t help but smile back.
“Goodnight Penelope, keep that to yourself okay”
“Got it boss” She giggles as she leaves.
~~~
The next day goes by slowly, they keep taking you away for tests. Checking over your wounds and changing the bandages, it felt exhausting everyone kept asking you questions and dragging you away from Aaron. Why can’t they just let you rest, why can’t you just go home, all you want to do is go home and deal with the aftermath of this case. Finally the nurse wheels you back into your room, leaving you alone, you're not sure how long you have laid on your bed staring at the ceiling for. But the tears keep flooding your eyes as you realise the team now knows your deepest darkest secret, your job is in jeopardy and all you want is Aaron. Aaron to hold you, Aaron to tell you that everything will be okay, you know it's wrong to crave someone like this but you can’t help it. You aren’t ready to lose him, he won’t want you now that he knows how damaged you are, he won’t want you around his son now knowing what a cold blooded killer you used to be. You didn’t realise the machine beside you was beeping away until someone entered the room, making their way towards you urgently.
“(Y/n), you're okay” Aaron sits on the edge of your bed grabbing your hand, your eyes flash towards him. You're hyperventilating, gasping for air as you squeeze his hand, shaking your head as you try to speak.
“I can’t, can’t breath” You whimper softly, his eyes soften as he pulls you into his arms, rubbing your back gently.
“Listen to my heart beat darling, copy me okay” He speaks delicately, his voice as sweet as honey. “Deep breaths, in and hold for three seconds” He takes a deep breath, as you copy him. “And out” He blows out, smiling softly as you copy him. “Just like that darling, and again” He takes a deep breath, listening closely to you, falling silent as you work on your breathing.
“Thank you” Breathing out slowly, as you glance up at him with a tear stained face.
“Don’t need to thank me” He smiles lightly at you, laying down on your bed, pulling you with him. To his surprise you don’t argue instead you cuddle up to him, entwinding your fingers with his.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He murmurs, his free hand running through your hair.
“Yes, but not today” Sighing softly as you close your eyes, your mind finally feeling empty.
“That's okay, later then get some rest” He smiles a little as he takes in just how peaceful you look.
“Stay with me?” Your words mumble together as sleep takes you.
“Always” Hotch smiles, kisses your head softly.
~~~
The doctors finally discharge you and give you permission to fly, so now you and Aaron are on your way to the jet where you're meeting the rest of the team. You haven’t seen anyone since they reduced you, you know they are going to have questions and alot of them, but you don’t want to answer them, you just can’t. You’re staring out the window, lost in thought while Aaron drives, he can’t help but keep glancing at you, worrying about what's going on inside your mind.
“You want to talk about it?” Aaron asks, his eyes focusing on the road.
“The team is going to have questions” Sighing as you rest your head on the window, watching the world go by.
“They will, but you don’t have to answer them tonight” He replies, before adding. “They will wait as long as you need”
“What about Chief Strauss?” Looking over at him, as the anxiety of her questing and debriefing fills you.
“We will have to face that tomorrow morning” Aaron does everything in his power to keep his eyes on the road and not look at you, he doesn’t want to see that broken look in your eyes, because he knows if he does you two won’t make it to the jet.
“We?” Your voice is lower, he can barely hear you but he does.
“Yes we, Im not letting you face her alone, whatever happens we will deal with it together” He gives you a small confident filled smile.
“Thank you” You return that smile lightly, but it doesn’t meet your eyes, other things playing on our mind.
“What else is going on inside your mind tonight?”
“I…It’s nothing” Shaking your head as you look back outside.
“Whatever it is, I can help”
“Even if it's stupid?”
“Yes even then” Aaron chuckles softly, earning a small laugh from you.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight, normally I love it but the thought of going back to my apartment tonight, it's unsettling…” You struggle to find the words, ending up playing with your fingers as you speak. His hand reaches out capturing your hand with his, a smile slipping onto your lips as his fingers linking in with yours.
“You can stay with me tonight, whenever you like to” Aaron's voice is soft as he pulls up to the runway.
“Thank you Aar”
~~~
The flight goes by quickly, you and Aaron get there before the rest of the team so you drag him to the couch, settling in and accidentally falling asleep with your head resting against Aaron's chest before the rest of the team arrives. You somehow woke up halfway through the flight, the rest of the team also asleep, Aaron deep asleep with his arm wrapped firmly around you. You can’t help but smile, feeling safe in his embrace as you scan the jet, seeing the team all spread out sleeping and a guilty feeling starts to eat at you. How could you ever think they would leave you there, how could you think that hiding your past from them was a smart idea when things started turning south feels wrong now. But that's behind you now, and it may seem silly but you feel so much closer with them all, and knowing that you have to answer all their questions is something you no longer dread. Smiling to yourself as you snuggle back down, falling back asleep in Aarons arms, knowing at one point you’ll have to deal with the way your heart throbs with his touch.
“(Y/n) wake up” His voice is soft as he rubs your arm, trying to get you to wake up. Grumbling softly as your eyes slowly open, groaning quietly as your eyes adjust to the lighting, the jet is so bright but soon your eyes fall on Aaron, smiling sleepily at him.
Hi” Yawning softly as you sit up, stretching a little.
“Sleep well there?” Derek smirks, sitting opposite you there.
“Like a peach” Chuckling softly as you see the team sitting opposite you.
“Sorry, we are about to land” Aaron smiles apologetically as you stiff back another yawn.
“Its fine”
“Here, It's also time for your meds” JJ adds, passing you over a bottle of water and your pills.
“Oh right, thanks JJ” You smile politely before taking them, swallowing down the pills and the water. You can feel the team's eyes on you, and the guilty feeling re enters you, slowly you pull the bottle away meeting the eyes of your team.
“Look I know you guys have questions—” You start, suddenly feeling defensive.
“We just want to know if you're okay?” Emily speaks, her eyes filled with concern that when you realise they don’t care about what you did, their looks are ones full of worry and concern a new feeling fills your chest. A small smile filled with love and affection fills your face as you think over your answer.
“Honestly no I'm not, I got a lot of healing to do a lot of things to work through, but give me time and I’ll be okay” You lean into Aaron as you answer, smiling a little.
“If you ever need anything, we are right here okay” Morgan smiles kindly at you.
“Just give me time and patience” You smile back at him, enjoying the way Aaron rubs your back in comfort.
“We can do that,” Rossi nods, giving you a light smile.
“Are you going to be okay at home, I know you don’t have a bed and its not good for you to rest up only on a couch” Reid adds in, staring at you with concern.
“You don’t have a bed?” JJ eyes almost fall out, giving you her best mum look, causing you to feel sheepish.
“Um no but i’ll be fine”
“Bullshoot, you will stay with me. I have a spare room” Garcia speaks up staring at you firmly, daring you to argue with her.
“Um I appreciate that, but I don’t need to”
“You are not sleeping on a couch” Emily shakes her head. “Its either my place or pens so pick”
“Look I appreciate it but I already have a place to stay” You smile shyly at them.
“Wait you have other friends” Morgan gasps dramatically. “Who?”
“Me” Aaron laughs at the shocked faces of the team, everyone but Rossi and Garcia.
“Huh, fine, can't argue with bossman then” Garcia smirks, looking away.
“That's settled then” Aaron smiles, before picking up his phone. “It's Strauss, she says we get the next few days off” Aaron smiles as his team cheers quietly.
“Does that mean we did a great job, or are we in trouble?” Rossi jokes, turning to Aaron.
“Both” Aaron half jokes, glancing down at you, feeling you tenses up.

ONE MONTH LATER.
You hadn’t seen the team since they all had dinner at Dave's house a few days after they got you back. It was a small celebration, you opened up them just a little bit, you all grew closer that night. Sadly the day you got back you were suspended pending an investigation, you talked with Strauss and she told you there wasn’t much she could do, because it was all out of her hands, but it didn’t matter to you because you had a plan. Today you finally found out what the decision is, and so after your meeting you head down to the BAU floor. Yes the team is out of town on a case, but luckily they are on their way home tonight and Dave is throwing another dinner tonight to celebrate the good news of yours. So you make your way to the one person you can’t wait to see anyway, because four weeks without seeing her beautiful smile is too long, you knock lightly on her door.
“Come in” She calls out, her voice full of happiness.
“Good afternoon Penelope” You smile as you push her door open, she gasps while spinning around in her chair, smiling up at you with excitement.
“It's youuu, you have come to see me” She exclaims, grinning up at you, climbing to her feet, holding out her hand for a small high five. It's your guys' small ways of saying hey, but instead you dismiss her hand, and pull her into a small hug.
“I missed you” Smiling softly as you feel her freeze only for her to quickly hug you back giving you a small squeeze. Penelope swears her face is going to fall off with how much she is smiling right now, she never imagined you would ever give her a hug and she can’t help but enjoy it. Closing her eyes as she soaks it in, holding herself back with the way she wants to squeeze you tightly.
“You're hugging me” She giggles, dancing just a little before you pull away, a big smile across your own face.
“That was okay, right?” Your smile falters a little as you double check with her.
“You can hug me whenever you like my love” She grins more. “But um what brought that on?”
“Well I want to be less scared of physical touch so I thought what better way to start working on it to give in and give a hug to someone I’ve been dying to” You shrug your shoulder, trying to act like its no big deal as your body tingles with the feeling of someone's else touch.
“That's a big step, I'm proud of you” Penelope smiles more at you, her heart soaring at the look of the new you. She knows she only saw you two weeks ago but you have changed even the energy around you. You cut your hair, it's more short now, and you look like you glow, there's a shine behind your eyes. You’re clearly sleeping more and eating regularly, looking after yourself is finally starting to sink in for you and she couldn’t be more proud.
“Thanks pen” Smiling back at her.
“So how did your meeting go?” she sits back down, as you grab her spare seat.
“It went really well, I can’t wait to tell everyone tonight at Dave's” You smile, enjoying her presents, soon you two just start catching up on everything that has been happening.
~~~
A soft knock on the door indicates that Aaron is here, smiling as you grab your phone making your way towards the door, opening it quickly glad to see both your boys there.
“Hi (Y/n)” Jack grins up at you, you can’t help but smile back as you bend down to give him a quick hug.
“Hey kiddo, oh I’ve missed you”
“You saw him the other day” Aaron teases as you pull away, smirking as you turn to him.
“What, is that your way of saying you didn’t miss me, Hotchner?” Smirking lightly as you tease him, enjoying the way he pulls you into a hug.
“Never” He chuckles softly, kissing your cheek lightly, sliding his hand into yours as he pulls away.
“Lets gooo, I wanna see Henry” Jack giggles as he leads you both down the hallway. You can’t help but laugh at him, he definitely does have his Dad's patience.
“We coming Jack” Smiling over at Aaron as you follow the boy closely.
“So the meeting with Strauss, how did it go?” Aaron asks you, glancing at you, his concern with how quiet you have been this afternoon growing. You were meant to text him, but he never heard from you.
“It went great, I’m no longer under investigation and i’m all clear to return” You smile slides away as you reach the car, Jack gets in leaving you two outside to talk freely.
“Are you still doing what we talked about?” Aaron speaks softly, his hand rubbing your arm softly as you lean against the car.
“I think It’s time Aaron, it's just going to be hard” You can’t help but sigh heavily as you lean into his touch.
“I know, but you need to do what's best for you and I will be right here beside you every step of the way” Aaron declares, smiling lovingly at you.
“I know, thank you and I mean it Aaron. You have been my rock the past few weeks” Smiling up at him.
“It's the least I can do, you need to know how much I care for you” Aaron smiles as he slides his hand gently on to your cheek, cupping your face gently as you lean in giving him a quick kiss.
“I appreciate it, now come on we need to go see our team” Smiling as you pull away from him, biting your lip as you climb into the car.
~~~
“You made it” JJ squeals softly as you walk in, you’re trailing behind Aaron and Jack. Jack is quick to run outside where Henry and half the team is.
“I did” Smiling lighty you walk over to her, Emily and Reid.
“How have you been?” Reid asks, smiling a little.
“I’m okay, so over resting all the damn time” Laughing softly, your heart melting with the comfort of being surrounded by your family.
“I remember that feeling, but you have to look after yourself” Emily gives you a stern look before sipping on her drink.
“Im trying” You reason, biting back a groan.
“We know, but we also know you” JJ smiles, a motherly look in her eyes.
“How did your meeting go today anyway, when are you coming back?” Emily presses on to her burning question, the one thing everyone tonight has been dying to now.
“Can we just wait until everyone is around, I don’t feel like repeating myself a million times” Forcing out  a chuckle as you watch the hope and excitement fade out of your three friends eyes.
“That bad huh?” JJ sighs, turning to the others.
“No, no it's not bad” You smile, glancing behind you at the incoming footsteps.
“Here, you don't have a drink yet” Rossi speaks from behind you, turning around smiling up at the man.
“Thanks Rossi” Taking it from him taking a deep breath as your fingers brush over his, glancing up you spot the rest of the team making their way over.
“So (Y/n), when are you getting your ass back” Derek grins up at you, Penelope and Aaron following him over.
“That's a complicated question” Sipping on your drink as you go over your answer, grateful to have Aaron coming to stand beside you. You can do anything with him beside you.
“What does that mean?” Penelope's eyes widen, fear entering her at the thought of her family breaking up.
“Look if Erin is giving you a hard time I will talk to her” Rossi automatically defends you, everyone's mind racing.
“No, Strauss isn’t the bad guy here, in fact she has been extremely helpful” Taking a deep breath before you continue. “I’m no longer under investigation, in face I’m welcome to return but I don’t want to, It’s my turn to move on, and look I know I owe you all so much for coming to my rescue, but I can’t do this job anymore I want to do something different with my life now” Your words come out filled with regret and guilt, your eyes full of sorrow as you talk, meeting everyone in your team's eyes. You have never felt closer and further away from them as you do right now, today is the start of a new beginning.
“You’re leaving us?” Garica's eyes tears up, her heart racing.
“Look, we understand why you want to leave, but is there anything we can say to make you stay?” Emily looks hopelessly at you, but a small proud smile pulls at her lips.
“Nothing, but hey I’m still going to be working at the FBI just not with the BAU anymore” You sigh, the feeling of sadness squishing your heart.
“I hope you know this doesn’t get you out of team nights still” Derek smiles at you, he knows how hard this decision was for you to make.
“Oh I know” Laughing softly.
“So what are you going to be doing instead?” Rossi smiles at you, a lovingly proud look in his eyes.
“I'm going to be the new FBI forensic scientist, so you guys will still have to work with me occasionally” Smiling at them, joy refilling the room.
“Oh, you’re taking over for Mary?” Garcia's face fills with excitement of course, she’s the one who works closely with that team more than the others.
“I am, so you guys can’t get rid of me that easily” The room fills with laughter once more.
“So that means you’re still coming to team nights right?” Reid asks. “You can’t just leave us all”
“Of course I will, plus” Smiling up at Aaron, catching his eyes his own smile grows as he gets the hint, his arm automatically wrapping around your waist as you lean into him. “Plus as your unit chiefs boyfriend I’ll be around more often” Pulling your eyes away from Aaron you glance around at the rest of the team, everyone's faces seem to be a mix of happiness and shock.
“Oh finally” Rossi cheers, laughing at the shocked looks around him.
“Wait, wait what” Morgan's open mouth slowly turns into a grin. “Seriously, you two thats awesome”
“Oh I knew there was something going on, I told you Emily” JJ smirks at Emily, who shakes her head smiling.
“Congrats you two” Emily smiles.
“That's so great, I'm happy for you both,” Reid smiles.
“Um Penelope, you're awfully quiet” You smile over at her, meeting her mischief filled eyes.
“I have been dying for you two too finally admit, I mean after you told me you kissed him months ago I have been waiting” She squeals.
“Wait, I told you, what, when?” Your eyes widen as you rack your brain trying to think.
“At the hospital when you were all drowsy from the medication” Aaron smirks down at you.
“And you didn’t tell me this, traitor” Smirking at him teasingly as you kiss his cheek, earning a bunch of awws and laughs fill the room as Aaron blushes deeply, which he returns with a stern glare at you.
The night slowly moves on, all full of laughter and chatter as the team all catches up and demands all the gossip on you and Aaron's relationship. Which you don’t mind at all talking about, happily opening up with your team. The only family you will ever only need by your side.

Ever since Penelope had found that positive pregnancy test in your bathroom, she had all but  demanded to throw you a baby shower, much to your protest. Now, seven months later, that’s how you find yourself here at the roundtable surrounded by your BAU family and your husband, celebrating the little bundle of joy that will soon make her arrival in a couple of months.
When you open the gift basket from Penelope, the tears start falling. Sitting in light pink tissue paper, was a gray stuffed bear with your baby’s name on the front of it. Beside the bear, lies a rolled up baby blanket that Pen had handmade herself along with an assortment of bottles and pacifiers. What catches your eye though, is a picture that sits just to the front of the basket in a pink picture frame; a photo of the team, taken at Rossi’s the day you found out you were pregnant. At the bottom of the frame in gray sparkly handwriting (probably Penelope's), it says, “We love you, Baby Hotchner.”
“Why are you crying, momma? Is sissy okay?,” Jack asks, tugging on your dress and crawling into your lap, softly putting his head on your stomach.
Running your fingers through his blonde locks, you move his head to face you. He’s frowning, serious even, as his brown eyes stare up at you – all but the blonde hair, he’s a spitting image of Aaron. Letting out a teary laugh, you sigh, “Oh baby, she’s okay. She’s perfect. I’m just extremely happy…” you pause, wiping the unshed tears from your eyes, and hold him tight. “I love you, this little girl, your aunts and uncles, and your daddy so much… so so much. Your little sister is loved already, and so are you.”
Jack lays his head back down and giggles, “I love you too, momma. But can I tell you a secret?” Lowering your ear down to his level, he sits up and whispers, “You’re squishing me.” Laughing, Jack wiggles out of your grasp and runs out of the room, with Uncle Dave trailing not too far behind.
As the shower is winding down, Derek, Spencer, and Dave start helping Aaron carry the gifts out to the SUV while the girls clean up. Jack takes his Captain America action figure and some crayons upstairs into Aaron’s office and once you make sure he’s situated and occupied, you walk back to help clean up. Taking the rest of the cake to the kitchenette, you’re abruptly pulled out of your thoughts by the overwhelming smell of Axe body spray filling your senses – it’s a smell you know well, and can only mean one thing – Brad, your ex, is for whatever reason, on the sixth floor.
Turning around, you hold onto the cake a little tighter than normal and muster up all the courage you have to talk to him. Not that you want to; the last thing you want is to see your ex at the BAU and not where he belongs — in counterterrorism, four floors down – but you know if you don’t say something, he won’t stop until you do.
He looks worse since the last time you saw him. His hair is grown out and touching his ears, slick with grease against his scalp. He looks like he hasn’t shaved in months (not that he ever took care of his facial hair when you were with him, but that’s beside the point), and the suit he’s wearing looks like it’s two sizes too big.
“What are you doing here, Brad?,” you ask, resisting the urge to roll your eyes at him.
He steps closer, and when he speaks, you can smell the stale coffee on his breath. “I heard a rumor that you were pregnant and wanted to come see how you were doing. Can’t believe you didn’t invite me to the shower. So who’s the lucky guy?”
Scoffing, you shake your head and take a few steps away from him. “I’m married now, and that’s none of your business.”
“Oh sweetheart,” he says, smirking and walking around you like a shark, “that’s never stopped me before.”
“Is there a problem?,” you hear him before you see him, and you’ve never been happier for your husband's impeccable timing.
Turning around, you give Aaron a small smile that doesn’t quite meet your eyes and he takes the cake from you, setting it down, and settling his hand comfortably on your lower back. “Everything’s fine, Aaron,” you explain, crossing your arms, and sending a glare in Brad’s direction, “He was just leaving.”
Brad stares at Aaron as if he’s sizing him up, and smirks. “Aaron huh?,” he shakes his head, and laughs wryly. “You’re on a first-name basis with your Unit Chief? Hmmm.. I should have known you’d sleep your way to the top.” Aaron’s stern gaze is fixed on Brad, and when you glance back at him, he realizes he said the wrong thing.
Aaron towers over him as he takes a step closer, their noses almost touching. “Out.” His voice is low, dangerous and for the first time in your life, you hope to see a fight break out in the middle of the bullpen. The man that once prided himself in being a “real man” swallows thickly, takes a step back and, for a quick second, you see fear flash in Brad’s eyes.  Aaron grabs Brad by the collar of his shirt and pulls him forward. “I said, get out. You won’t like it if I have to repeat myself… and if I see you around this bullpen or anywhere near my agents, I will see that you’re fired and arrested on federal charges. Do I make myself clear?”
Suddenly let go from Aaron’s death grip, Brad falls back and stumbles. “Crystal, Sir. I’m so-”
“Leave!,” Aaron cuts him off, voice booming throughout the entire bullpen, and you watch Brad run for the stairs. Letting out a breath, you shake your head and smirk.
Aaron brings his hand behind you, rubbing circles on your back and cupps your face with his other hand. “Sweetheart, Are you alright?” He searches your face for worry, for stress, anything he can find to give him an excuse to run down the stairs and beat the shit out of the man that thought he could talk to you like that, but finds nothing… nothing but, arousal? Your eyes are dark, hungry as you look up and grab him by the tie, bringing him into a heated kiss. With burning lungs, you let go and come up for air, still staring at him like he’s your prey.
He chuckles and wipes the corner of his mouth where your lipstick stained his face. “What was that for? Not that I’m complaining, but you never kiss me at work.”
“Because, SSA Hotchner,” you put emphasis on his title, play with the lower part of his tie, and look up at him through your eyelashes. “... you have no idea how hot you are when you’re angry.”

“You swore to me, Hotch.”
These are the first words that have come out of your mouth since he’d put himself in harm's way to save you. They make him flinch, the use of his formal nickname stinging as you say it. He knows that you calling him Aaron is a luxury, something that he shouldn’t have gotten so used to but it's hard when it rolls off your tongue so easily.
You’re right; he had promised to keep the boundaries set and he’s a man who prides himself on keeping his word. Yet, he’d overstepped at the first sign of you being in danger since this had all started.
He sighs in defeat, “I know and I apologize for letting my emotions get the best of me, but I couldn't pretend that I was okay with that.”
“I’m a capable agent, I’ve proven myself here,” You say firmly.
He feels guilty, not only for breaking his promise but that his actions have you doubting yourself. While your words scream confidence, your eyes say otherwise.
“I know that.”
You cross your arms against your chest, not satisfied that he understands yet, “I wouldn't be on this team if I didn't have the qualifications.”
“Honey, I know.”
“That was so embarrassing. And it felt like you didn't trust me.”
Hotch bristles at that, his mouth setting into a frown, “Me saving your life was embarrassing?”
You glare back at him, unphased, “You know that's not what I meant. If it were Derek or Dave or even Emily, this would've gone much differently.”
“I made the call that I felt needed to be made. I can admit that my judgment in making that decision was clouded, but you're not just an agent to me, you’re…” He trails off, unsure what to say.
He knows what he wants, but you haven’t initiated more, leaving him to assume that you’re happy with things the way they are. He tries not to let that settle in his heart, focusing on the fact that you want him around at all.
“Your fuck buddy,” You supply and somehow his frown sets deeper.
“We’ve talked about that, I don't like when you call yourself that.”
“Well, it's true, it’s all I can ever be,” It comes out of your mouth just a whisper, arms tightening around yourself.
Silence falls between the two of you as you both sit with your own guilt.
It feels wrong to push him away given the circumstances, but this is exactly what you didn’t want. You didn’t want him treating you differently, even though your feelings for him have deepened. You didn’t want anyone weaseling their way into your heart the way he has. You can only blame yourself for getting involved with a man that’s efficient at anything he puts his mind to though you’re sure he wasn’t trying to make you fall for him. He’s your boss and while you’re in a compromised position engaging in whatever this is between you, you know that he would never approve of a real relationship. Right? That thought process all you need to decide to cut things off.
“Can we not argue, not after that? Please?” You ask softly, trying to extend an olive branch to him. You dare a glance at him and find that he's already looking at you, answering your question with a weak nod.
“Come here,” He holds his hands out to you and you quickly close the space between you. He squeezes your hands firmly before letting go and cupping your face in his hands. “You’re sure you're okay?”
“A little shaken up, but that’s a given. I’m okay and I’m here, Aaron. You feel me,” You place your hands over his.
His eyes drift away from yours as he speaks, “I couldn’t think straight.”
“I know me either, but it's fine because we’re right here,” You reassure him, lifting to the tips of your toes to ask silently for a kiss.
When he captures your lips with his, he can taste it. Taste the goodbye in how you feverishly try to consume him, and in every move afterward. Your fingers thread into his hair, your body a solid line of hot heat against his. There's a novelty to the desperation in your movements as you work yourself and then him out of his clothes.
With each pause, each longing look, each reach for him he can feel you breaking the bonds that you've created. Even in his recognition of it, he can't say no to you. He craves your body, often falling asleep to the thought of being deep inside of you. He tumbles into bed first, enamored with the sight of you soft and naked above him. The two of you kiss some more, slow and wet, and he lets himself get lost in you.
At least there’s one last time, is all he can think to himself when you straddle him.
When you whine his name over and over, sweet like honey, he closes his eyes and tightens his grip on your hips, trying to ingrain both the sound and feel of you into his brain. You bend to kiss him, your hips coming down against him over and over, taking him like you’re made for it. It takes little time for you to ride him to your peak, clenching tightly around him as you moan wantonly on top of him. Your orgasm triggers his, and he clutches you close as he fucks his release further into you.
Neither of you speaks again, he just submits to you when you slant your mouth against his, letting him slip out of you. He will gladly let you take and take until he has nothing else to give.
“Thank you for saving me, baby,” You whisper eventually, your lips brushing against his skin, still damp with sweat.
He melts under the sweetness in your voice, “Anytime.”
When you fall asleep in his arms the familiar waves of loneliness wash over him and he grows empty. It hasn't hit him this hard since the two of you began this, but with you slipping out of his fingers it comes back more powerful than before. He tries to keep himself from drowning in it, peering down at your face. Lost in your serenity and beauty, he wonders how you'll be once the two of you part.
Will things go back to the way they were before this? He hadn't known that you were attracted to him, didn't know you looked at him as more than your superior. You treated him the same as everyone else and cared for him just as thoroughly as you did everyone else— unafraid of the boundaries others set because of his title. Unafraid to break the rules when you detected his well-hidden attraction towards you.
Would you still care for him like that? Still buy him his coffee and donut when you stop for the rest of the team? Still bring him tea when you make yours when the two of you are the last two up on the jet? Stay behind to help him finish reports because you’re just as dedicated to the job?
After hours of overthinking, he finally succumbs to sleep, wound tightly around you as the two of you rest.
Morning comes too quickly, both of you groaning at the sound of his alarm. His waking up early lends itself to your situation, allowing you enough to cuddle and kiss before either of you need to get up and get ready.
He lingers as long as he can, knowing that he’s just one goodbye from lonely. Before he leaves your room he pulls you into a kiss abruptly, causing you to squeak into his mouth. He swallows that noise and everyone that follows eagerly, his fingers firm at the base of your neck.
“What was that for?” You ask breathlessly when he finally pulls away.
“I’m just glad you're okay.”
Your expression softens, guilt planting in your chest, and you treat him to another kiss. What you both know to be your last kiss, though neither of you have spoken the words.
There's a gray filter that settles over his life after that day. You're another failed attempt at connection. With the divorce and limited contact with Jack, he does what he does best– work. It gets easier to see you day in and day out because he grows more numb to life as time passes.
You’re the first to notice the change in him, though you feel strange bringing it up to the others. Reid immediately agrees with you, and Morgan wonders out loud if Hotch hasn’t been laid in a while. Wanting to steer the conversation away from that, you account it to losing Haley and the lack of time he gets to spend with Jack. All of you take your turns trying to take care of him. It's take-out containers when one of you notes he hasn't eaten, or another cup of coffee when his eyes look a little too glazed over. You take on more reports than before trying to lighten his load but he stays late anyway.
You hate seeing him like this, hate that you're the cause of it all but this is for the best. It's not that this isn't hard for you, you care for him more deeply than you'd ever planned to. But a relationship with a coworker, let alone your boss, isn't ideal. It would make everything more complicated and you’ve had enough of that in life.
As time drags on, your loneliness starts to fester inside of you. It doesn't matter how many dates you end up on, or how many people end up in your bed. When you’re finally alone after all the encounters, you’re left with yearning. That yearning lets the doubt that’s been locked up in the back of your mind free, and you're finally able to be honest with yourself.
You miss him and you're not sure that there's anyone who could fill the void that’s appeared since you left him. It takes weeks to work through your guilt and hesitancy, but eventually you decide to tell him how you feel. Even if he's moved on, you have to let him know. He has to know that he's worth every complication that could come from a relationship with him.
The perfect opportunity rolls around; a Friday night that you've decided to stay late, nothing else but work to do. You walk into his office with a stack of reports ready to be completely honest.
“Got these reports for you, sir.”
He gives you a stiff nod, keeping his eyes trained on the files you placed on his desk, “Thank you.”
It's a clear cue to leave, and for a moment you lose your gumption, turning around and heading towards the door. Absentmindedly, he lets out a sigh, soft and heavy at the same time, and you stop in your tracks, facing him once more.
When he realizes that you’re still here, he peers up at you, eyebrows knit together in confusion, “Is there something I can do for you, agent?”
His stare almost turns your body to jello but you straighten your shoulders with a deep breath, “Have you eaten?”
“I’m not sure how that’s relevant.”
“Just answer the question, Aaron.”
His eyes widen at your use of his first name, and his bottom lip sweeps over his tongue before he answers, “No, I haven’t eaten.”
“There’s this diner this guy I used to see told me about. He never took me though…”
Hotch can’t help the smile that pulls at his lips. The diner you’re referencing is one 5 minutes away from his apartment that he’s mentioned before. He had never taken you because that felt too much like a date, and he didn’t want to scare you away.
“This guy sounds like a drag,” His voice is monotone and you struggle to hold yourself together.
“He can be a little intense, but I don’t know.” You shrug playfully before continuing, “I really care about him. Could see myself being with him for the foreseeable future if he was interested,” You move closer, trailing your finger across his desk.
“He’s definitely interested,” He rises to his feet, coming around the desk to stand next to you.
“Oh, so you two have had a little chat?” You feel your face growing warm under his gaze.
“We’ve had plenty of chats.”
You don’t hesitate to close the gap between you, pressing your lips firmly to his. His hands find your hips immediately, pulling you tightly against his body. He’s licking into your mouth, desperate for the taste of you that he’s been missing for months. As always, your fingers are in his hair, knotting into the silkiness as you anchor him to you. You'll never take moments like this for granted again, melting into him as he kisses you breathless
“I’m sorry, for everything,” You mumble against his lips once the kiss breaks.
He shakes his head, shushing you gently, “It’s alright.”
“It’s not, I shouldn’t have walked away. I got scared.”
“Feeling like these are scary, I understand. Just don’t do it again,” He adds playfully and you look up at him, giggling against his cheek.
“Won’t happen again, sir,” You answer cheekily and he squeezes your hips, long strong figures gripping you tightly.
“Let me finish up here, and then we can head out?”
“Give me more work, I’ll help if I can so we can get out of here earlier,” You offer, eager to leave and talk through everything with him.
“You know what, let’s just call it a night now. Did you drive here today?”
“No…could I…could I stay over at your place tonight?”
His cheeks turn a muted, delicious shade of pink at your question, “I would really like that.”
You lean in for one last kiss before heading back to your desk to pack up your things. Hotch beats you, joining you at your desk with his go bag. You look up at him in surprise, nervous about the few stragglers in the office seeing you together. But he just gives you a reassuring smile, holding his hand out to you.
“Ready?”
For less loneliness. For not being afraid. For spending time with him unapologetically. For caring about him openly and honestly. You're ready for it all.
“Ready,” You say as you slip your hand into his.

Wonderstruck || Aaron Hotchner x fem reader
Hi besties missed you besties!! This is a little something sort of inspired by LDSK-- I was watching it and couldn't help but think how crushed I would be if I was in Spencer's shoes, lol. Not a direct au, just a little something adjacent to it!
and a huge thanks to @spacecowboyhotch for beta-ing this for me!
tw: misogyny, epithets against women, arguing, typical cm canon content.
wc: 2.1k
“He’s a violent misogynist. Sending her in might distract him enough to give us an opening,” Rossi says, mulling over Spencer’s suggestion to send you into an active hostage situation in an attempt to de-escalate.
“I’ll go,” you say, reaching for a vest. Hotch’s hand shoots out in front of yours, keeping you from the stack of protective equipment.
“No you won’t. He’s a violent misogynist. I’m not sending you in to become a defenseless target.” He says, his jaw set.
“I’m not defenseless!” You argued indignantly. “I’ll have a vest and a gun, not to mention half the FBI as backup.”
“I don’t like the risk. There has to be another way,” he insists.
“Hotch, it’s the best we got,” Morgan tries to reason with him.
“It’s fine. It’s the job. I can handle it,” you plead to your boss. He holds your eye contact for a moment, your hopefulness appearing to soften his steely gaze.
“Go get a discrete comms for under your vest. You won’t be able to hear us but I need to be able to hear you to know if things are okay on the inside,” he relents, and you scamper off to prepare yourself.
Once you’re ready, Hotch insists on walking you to the door of the compound.
“It’s very important that you don’t try to prove anything to him. If he asks you to sit with the other women, sit and acquiesce and attempt to negotiate subtly from there. And if he escalates, stand down. We are getting plenty just from your comms,” he counsels, placing a hand on your shoulder and taking care to look you in the eyes.
“I’ve got it, Hotch. I’m gonna be fine,” you nod.
“I’ll see you when it’s over, then.”
“See you, Hotch.”
You step into the compound and walk down a long hallway before you make it to the room where the unsub is holding the hostages.
You knock gently, opening the door and introducing yourself.
“A woman? From the FBI? Ridiculous,” he scoffs.
“I know, but the sooner you and I work things out the sooner I can get out of your hair,” you say sweetly.
“I’d sooner blow this place up than yield to one of you,” he sneers, and a look at the collar of his shirt reveals that he means it— you can see a few threatening wires coming through.
“What do you need from me to avoid that? I’m happy to oblige anything I can.”
“How about you sit down and shut the hell up, and the FBI gets me a passport and a helicopter.”
There’s another knock at the door and you whip your head around. “This is supervisory special agent Aaron Hotchner, I just want to talk,” he says, swinging the door open.
“Supervisory, huh? You sent the girl in?”
“Not by choice,” he scoffs.
You bite your tongue. It was true, you supposed, but you hadn’t expected him to tell the unsub that.
“And look what good it did you. These women, they get too big for their britches and they think they can start to question our god-given authority.”
“It’s ridiculous, dealing with this one whining and complaining about my orders. She doesn’t belong here,” Hotch sympathizes.
You think you might throw up. You always liked Hotch, admired him, and you thought the two of you had a mutual respect. Thought.
“She’s a real spitfire, that bitch, thinking she’s good enough to be law enforcement. I bet she’s a real pain in the ass.”  The unsub continues.
“Don’t I know it. Always late, cares more about her outfits and her hair than her work. She ever should have made it to my department to begin with.” He snarls.
You’ve been late a couple times, yeah, but you didn’t think anyone had noticed. And sure, you liked to look nice, but who didn’t? And it never got in the way in the field. You take a deep breath, fighting to keep your emotions at bay.
“And she’s not a kept woman, I’m sure,” the unsub scoffed.
“Of course not. It’s like you said, who’d want to keep a mouthy brat like her around.” He agrees.
While you want nothing more than for Hotch to turn around and cuff this guy so everyone can leave safely, you secretly hope you don’t make it out so that Hotch never sees that you’re crying. You wouldn’t give him that satisfaction, the bastard.
“Between the two of us, if you wanted to give the whore some long-overdue discipline, I’d be happy to turn and look the other way.”
“I don’t think she can be helped, but I suppose it couldn’t hurt, either,” Aaron rolls his eyes, crossing the room and grabbing you harshly by the shoulders. If he can tell that you’re crying, he ignores you. Burn in hell, Hotchner. He pulls you away from the other women.
“My Glock is in my ankle holster. You need a clear shot to the thigh or the head,” he mutters as he drags you. It takes you a minute to put it together, but you nod once you realize. “You need to struggle so he’s distracted.”
“Get off of me,” you protest, squirming against Hotch’s grip. His fingers dig into your skin and the tears continue to roll down your face. He slots his knee into the back of yours, toppling you off balance and into the ground.
“Learn to be obedient, you dumb skank!” The unsub bellows, but Aaron’s body crouching over you  gives you enough cover to unsheath his gun and make a quick shot to the unsub’s thigh.
He falls out of his chair and Hotch rushes to cuff him, while you work on freeing the hostages. You wipe your last tears away as you escort them out of the building— you had a job to do now, and whether or not your unit chief thought so, you were damn good at it.
The rest of the team is waiting for you at the compound doors, and they help get the victims over to medical. Morgan moseys over to you as you help the last person in your group into an ambulance.
“Alright mama, your turn,” he says, taking you gently by the arm, and you just follow. Morgan tilts his head in surprise. “You okay? You must be hurting if you aren’t even going to put up a fight about medical,” he says as he lifts you onto a gurney.
“I’m fine, Derek. Just do me a favor?” You ask as the paramedic begins his assessment.
“Whatever you need.”
“Don’t let Hotch anywhere near me.”
He’s a bit taken aback by the request. “Kiddo—“
“Derek, please,” you interrupt him before he can argue.
“Alright,” he relents.
“You should be okay, miss,” the EMT says. “You’ve got a few bruises and you’ll probably feel pretty exhausted once the adrenaline wears off, but I don’t see any reason that you’d need to be admitted to the hospital unless you’re in any pain. Just rest should do it.”
“Great, thank you,” you say, hopping off of the gurney. “Take me back to the hotel?” You asked Derek.
He grits his teeth. “You go sit in the car. You don’t have to talk to him, but I need to let Hotch know that you’re okay before I take you back— I’m not facing his wrath if I don’t,” he explains with a wry smile.
A few hours later, you were tucking yourself in after a long, hot, tearful shower, Netflix on in the background and your laptop open in front of you. Your cursor hovered over the transfer request form as you chewed the inside of your cheek. A knock at the door— presumably the room service you’d ordered— distracts you from your dilemma.
You swing the door open with a polite smile, and immediately crumple when you see all six feet and two inches of your unit chief standing in the hallway.
“Respectfully, Hotch, I really don’t want to talk to you.” You tell him, attempting to close the door, but he blocks it.
“Are you okay?” He asks, looking you over. Suddenly you feel small in your ratty old sweatpants and college tee.
“I’m fine, but Morgan already told you that.” You remind him.
“You’re not injured, but that doesn’t mean your okay.” He says, and he looks so concerned that it makes your blood boil.
“Fuck off, Hotch. How dare you ask me that. Just go back to your room, I’ll finish my transfer application and we can both pretend I was never here,” you say, stepping away from the door and hoping he’ll get the message. He follows you in, instead.
“What?” He asks, shock and hurt in his tone. “You can’t transfer.”
“You have a lot of nerve showing up at my door to begin with,” you continue.
“I don’t understand,” he says, bewildered.
“I get that I’m new here, but I really thought I was proving myself. And as my supervisor, I would have appreciated some feedback if you didn’t feel the same way,” you argued bitterly.
“What do you mean?” He asks.
“Maybe Emily was right when she said you don’t trust women as much as you trust men.”
“Is that what this is about?” He asks, and he almost laughs. You swear you could hit him.
“Of course it is! How could you say those things? Everyone says you’re such a hardass. I never believed them, and it turns out they were wrong. You’re worse. You’re cruel, you’re mean. Get out of my room.” You’re being loud, too loud, but you can’t bring yourself to care.
“Y/n, I didn’t mean a word of that,” he implores.
“Oh, sure,” you scoff.
“It was a strategy. I had to empathize with him. You know that,” he reminds you, his tone begging you to believe him.
“Even at that, why did it come so easily? Why were all of my worst qualities right at your fingertips? Why was it so easy for you to find reasons to discredit me?” You bite back.
“It had nothing to do with you. All of that came straight from the unsub’s blog, Garcia found it after you went in.”
The revelation hit you like a ton of bricks. You could only let out a sheepish, surprised little “oh.”
“You’re an exemplary agent. I wouldn’t have let you go in if I wasn’t certain of your abilities,” he says, putting both of his hands on your shoulders, staring at you to make sure you were looking at him too, to make sure you believed him.
You couldn’t, not yet. “Why’d you push back on me going in, then? Is it because I’m a girl?”
“No.” He says resolutely.
“Then what is it?” You goad him on.
“It’s not that,” he says through gritted teeth, no longer able to look at you.
“Tell me why, then!” You exclaim. “Tell me.”
“I didn’t want to send you in because I care for you. And because the thought of something happens to you scares me.” He admits, his voice only hairs above a whisper.
“Oh,” you gasp out. “Oh.”  It’s like all the air has left the room, and the two of you are suspended in time.
“I’m sorry. I know that’s inappropriate.”
“Hotch,” you start.
“If you still want to submit a transfer application, I understand. I’d be happy to write you a glowing recommendation.”
“No,” you say, reaching out to take his hands in yours, taking three quick steps so your toes are practically touching.
“No?” He asks trepidatiously, ducking his head closer to yours.
“No,” you answer. “I think I’d like to stay right where I am.”
“Thank god,” Aaron breathes against your lips before he kisses you. He wraps his arms around your waist and draws you in closer, and you curl your fingers into the cropped hair at the base of his neck.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper. “I’m sorry for thinking you could really believe those things.”
“You have nothing to apologize for. I’m sorry for not making it clearer how in awe I am of you constantly, as an agent and as a person. I am… wonderstruck by you, constantly, but I’ve done my best to hide it for the sake of professionalism. I’ve done too well, it seems.”
You shake your head. “You did what you thought was best. I couldn’t ever blame you for that.”
He smirks. “Luckily for us both, I know better now,” he says as he leans back in to kiss you again.

“Have you eaten?” Hotch asked as he towered above you on the catwalk.
His voice startled you, making your heart sputter in your chest. You spun around in your desk chair and sat back in it to see him. Your eyes traveled slowly up his frame until you met his eyes, and smiled.
“Or should I say, are you hungry?” The only thing he has seen you eat today was an orange at lunch and several cups of coffee throughout the day. He wanted to change that because he cared more than a boss should.
“I could ask you the same thing,” you quipped, fiddling with the pen in your hand.
You only saw Hotch leave his office, maybe twice today, and one of those times was for coffee. It wasn’t like you were keeping track, the desk you were assigned to was parallel to his office, so you saw whenever he came and went.
He smirked, head falling forward to look at his feet. “Would you like to get dinner with me?”
Your eyes went wide, smile wavering. Hotch stuttered, clearing his throat as his face reddened. “I didn’t- That's not what I-” He pinched the bridge of his nose in embarrassment.
“I know what you meant, Hotch,” you said, waving your hand in the air. “And yes, I would. I'm starving. I just need five minutes.”
He nodded, heading back into his office. You smiled to yourself as you turned around. You wouldn't have said no, if he really was asking. Sure, he was handsome, caring, selfless, funny when he wanted to be. It was just a matter of time before you fell head over heels for him, and you slowly started to feel it happening for a while now.
Exactly five minutes later, Hotch came out of his office with his briefcase and over-coat in hand. You slid your coat on and slung your bag over your shoulder.
“You ready?” you asked, flashing him a bright smile.
He nodded, and gestured for you to go first, his hand falling to your lower back. His hand lit a fire under your layers of clothes, your knees almost faltering as you walked. He stood behind you, while you waited for the elevator in silence.
“Y’know,” you said, breaking the silence. The elevator doors opened and you both stepped in. You faced the doors, not bothering to look at him as you spoke, “I wouldn't have said no.”
His head swung towards you, his brows furrowed. You felt his dark eyes bore into the side of your head, eyes pleading for you to look at him. You were so sure he was about to tell you off.
“Do you mean that?” he questioned. His voice was like a warm hug that completely consumed you.
You slowly turned your head towards him, eyes traveling up his frame until your eyes met. Your heart pounded in your chest as you both studied each other's face.
“I do,” your voice barely registering. He smiled, like actually smiled; teeth and dimple showing. You thought you were going to melt, a weight being lifted off your chest. You let your head fall forward, the corners of your mouth turning up. You thought your heart was going to fall out of your ass.
“It's a date then.” He took a half step closer to you, and from the corner of your eye, you see his hand leave his side, a pinky ghosting the side of your hand. You interlaced your fingers with his. His hand swallowed yours whole as you looked down at where you connected. You couldn't tell if the rapid pulse you felt was yours or his.
When the elevator doors opened, you stepped out first with Hotch in tow behind you. “Does this mean I get to call you Aaron, now?” you asked, voice echoing against the concrete walls.
He squeezed your hand a little tighter, a smile forming on his face. “It does.” He led you to his black SUV and opened the passenger door for you, while taking your bag from your hand.
That was something else you loved about him, he was a complete gentleman and never purposely made you feel uncomfortable. He always checked in with you after rough cases, asking if you needed literally anything, all you had to do was ask. And everytime you wanted to say him.
“What kind of food are you in the mood for?” he asked, sliding into the driver's seat.
You shrugged your shoulders. “I don't know, something greasy, like deep dish.”
“There is this pizza place downtown, off of F street, I think you’ll really like,” he said, pulling out of the parking garage and onto the main road to the highway. “Plus they have the best garlic knots I've ever had.” You hummed at the thought of sinking your teething into some good food.
Aaron stretched his arm across the center console, holding out his hand. You beamed as you interlaced your fingers with his, holding his hand in your lap, while your other hand traced random shapes and patterns on the back of his hand.
For most of the 45 minute car ride, you both sat in a comfortable silence with the radio playing softly in the background. You asked him about Jack, and if he had any plans for the weekend. He didn't, since Jessica took Jack to Hershey park.
Once in the city, Aaron found a parking garage near the pizza joint. As he paid for parking, you stood near the steps that led up to the street to wait for him. You couldn't help but to watch him. He looked so delicious in the black suit perfectly tailored to his physique. You lick your lips. He took the ticket from the machine and stuck it in his jacket pocket.
Walking the few blocks, Aaron grabbed your wrist, stopping you on a quiet street corner. You turned to him with your brows pinched in confusion.
“What's wrong?”
He shook his head. “Nothing, I just…” he sighed. He slid his hands around your waist, pulling you into him, eyes flicking down to your lips. Your head spun, all your senses being filled by him. His hand came up to your face, cupping your cheek. The pad of his thumb swiped just under your bottom lip as he licked his lips. You softly whimpered, your eyes fluttering shut.
“Kiss me. Please,” you muttered, your breathing picking up.
Aaron closed the distance between you, brushing his nose softly against yours, and pressed his lips to yours. You brought your hands up to his sides, trying your best to bring him closer than he already was, humming against his lips to deepen the kiss.
“I just wanted to tell you, you are the most beautiful person I have ever encountered,” he marveled. Your cheeks heated up as you pressed your forehead into his chest.
“Quite the charmer, you are, Aaron Hotchner. If I didn't know any better, I would think you are trying to seduce me,” you said, looking up at him through your lashes.
“Is it working?” he grinned, brushing his fingers through your hair. You leaned into his touch.
You laughed and shook your head. “It is, but I can smell the pizza place from here, and I'm more hungry for food than for you.”
Aaron smiled, throwing an arm around your shoulders as you wrapped an arm around his middle, and headed towards the pizza place.
You picked a booth in the corner, while Aaron ordered a pepperoni deep dish pizza for the both of you. Instead of sitting across from you, he scooched in next to you, placing the order number on the table, and a hand on your thigh.
“You smell good,” you hummed, wanting to be drowned in his cologne. You cross your legs, trapping his fingers between your thighs.
“So do you,” he countered, giving your leg a squeeze. His nose found the crook of your neck, taking in a deep breath, before pressing an open mouth kiss to your skin. You thanked the universe you put on black dress pants that morning.
Aaron was right, it was some of the best pizza you've ever had, since moving to the city. You both decided, instead of walking back to his car and calling it a night, you guys would walk to the greenway between the Washington monument and the Capitol.
Ever the gentleman, he walked closest to the street, hand intertwined with yours. Every time you guys stopped to wait at a crosswalk, Aaron would pull you into him, peppering soft kisses all over your face and neck.
As you passed the FBI’s DC office, you asked him, “How long have you felt like this?” You could see his cheeks pinken under the streetlight.
“Since your first case with the BAU,” he confessed. You stopped walking with your mouth agape. You snatched your hand from his, playfully hitting his chest.
“That long,” you exclaimed in surprise. “And you didn't say anything?”
He raised a brow, pressing his lips into a flat line. “Oh yeah? And what about you? You couldn't keep your eyes off of me for the first two weeks you were here.”
It was your turn to blush as you smiled. “I asked you first, and besides, I did say something. This is a date, isn't it?” You took his hand again, and continued walking.
Aaron chuckled, pulling you closer to him. “It is.”
You guys sat on a bench that faced the Washington monument, gazing at what little stars you could see from the city’s light pollution. He watched you observe your surroundings, a smile on your face the whole time. If you wanted the moon, he’d do everything in power to do so. You were so beautiful, and nobody could ever change his mind.
“This is officially the best day ever,” you sighed, leaning your head against Aaron’s shoulder. He pressed a kiss into your hairline.
“I wholeheartedly agree,” he smiled.

pairing: aaron hotchner x fem!bau!reader
summary: you and aaron are friends with feelings more obvious than you think. or: 5 times the team suspects you and hotch are dating +1 time they know it.
word count: 6.6k
warnings: friends to lovers, the team being a little nosy, pining idiots!!!, probably inaccurate descriptions of bau jobs (for the plot!), a very small injury, a birthday, a first kiss, and fluff!
a/n: hiii this one has been a long time coming so thank you guys for being so patient with me!!! and special thanks to the anon who requested this one! i hope u guys enjoy it and please please let me know what you think <3 ily
Aaron Hotchner was never someone you thought you could be this close to.
Coming to the BAU, you’d been intimidated more than anything. As Unit Chief, he’s got a reputation that’s hard to ignore. Professional, brave, cold when he has to be. His success and talent were undeniable, and all you wanted to do was prove that you belonged there, too.
Then, you really met him, and he surprised you in a way you hadn’t expected. Hotch was kind right off the bat, welcoming you to the team with a smile that felt like some sort of prize.
He was an excellent boss. Understanding and protective, quick to defend anyone on the team like they were his own family. Except, he was so much more than just your boss.
Now, you’d call him your closest friend, someone who’s number you’d call if you were in trouble. He’s your closest friend and yet you feel so much more for him.
It started slow, a friendship blooming the way a plant does with just enough sunlight. It was a shared smile here, a nudge of the shoulder there. It grew to be a seat next to him reserved for you on every plane ride.
Today, it’s eating lunch with him in his office.
Aaron usually works through lunch, more eager to get things done than he is to worry about skipping a meal. Somehow, with two tupperware containers in your hand and a sweet smile, you’d managed to get him to take a break.
“Whatcha doing?” You’d asked.
Hotch looked up from his paperwork then, dropping his pen because you were in his doorway. “You know, Unit Chief business. Reports.”
“Sounds like you have time for lunch, then.” You set the containers down on his desk, making sure to avoid the papers he’d just been working on.
“I should really get this done-”
“Hotch,” you stopped him, “you and I both know that you’re always ahead on this stuff because you stay here so late. Lunch won’t set you back.”
With a shake of his head and the biting back of a smile, a simple twitch at the corners of his mouth, Aaron agreed and stacked his paperwork off to the side.
That’s how you’ve ended up in the chair that’s usually on the opposite side of his desk, only now it’s tugged to be next to his. Your knees touch every so often when one of you shifts, and the warmth stays with you even when the contact is gone.
“Sorry it’s nothing fancy,” you say as he opens the container you brought for him.
“Don’t apologize. It’s great.” Hotch has a way of saying things that make them sound true, no matter how few words he uses, so you accept it.
“Okay, good!” There’s a small silence, a lull as you both take your first bites. “Can I help with anything?”
Aaron looks from the paperwork to your face, your eyes already on his. “You don’t have to do that.”
“I want to,” you reassure him. “I think sometimes you forget that you aren’t the only one who can do this stuff.”
He knocks his knee against yours. Purposeful this time. A silent ‘thank you.’
“Like you said, I’m ahead anyways. I’ve got it.”
“Come on, Hotch. I’m already done with my report from our last case. I’ve got time. Let me help.”
He’s always been reluctant to accept help, to ask for it, but when you’re asking so sweetly, when it’ll give him an excuse to spend more time with you, it’s hard for Aaron to say no.
“Alright. You help for an hour, that’s it.”
You grin at him, like his acceptance of your offer was some kind of gift he’d given you. Your nose crinkles a little with it, and his hand flexes in his lap, like he’s fighting not to reach out to you.
“Okay, put me to work, boss.”
“We just started lunch,” he says, a little chuckle puffing out.
“Have you ever heard of multitasking, Agent Hotchner?”
Aaron laughs, shaking his head as he reaches for one of the files in the stack he’d made and hands it to you. He’d call everyone at the BAU a friend, but there’s something different, something more about how he’d describe you.
He’s grown closer to you than he usually lets himself get to people, like you’re the only one with the right tools to break through walls he’s put up. You see each other outside of work (on the rare days you aren’t working), and still, he feels like it’s never long enough.
Hotch briefly wonders if he could just move your desk into his office. He shakes off the thought and what it might mean.
Head bent, you’re now focused on the work he gave you, and Aaron takes the chance to admire you. His eyes flick over your profile, the light hitting your cheeks, the flutter of your eyelashes every time you blink.
As if you could feel his gaze on you, you turn towards him and smile—a small, closed-mouth smile, but a smile all the same—before turning your attention back to the page.
When you take a pause and take another bite of your lunch, a small drop of sauce lands on your thigh. “Oh, shit.”
Aaron grabs a tissue from the box on his desk, wrapping it over his fingertip before wiping the small spot from your leg, his finger a spark against you even through your pants.
“Good thing you wore black,” he says, tossing the tissue in the garbage. His hand, however, stays on your leg, and though the touch is light the weight of it feels the opposite. Heavy, huge.
“Good thing you’re here to clean up after me, more like.”
Your eyes meet, and you share a smile with Hotch the way you often do. Mid-conversation, across a room, it’s a smile you sort of reserve for each other.
In the main office below, Derek, Spencer, and JJ stand together, watching the interaction through the window into Hotch’s office. You and Aaron seem to be in your own bubble, completely unaware of your small audience.
“They’ve gotta be together,” Derek is the first to speak, waving a hand towards the office where you and Hotch are talking. “I mean, come on.”
“I don’t know,” JJ shrugs, “they both seem kinda clueless.”
“We probably shouldn’t speculate about them,” Spencer, always the sweetheart, says. “But, statistically, Hotch never eats lunch. Just saying.”
JJ pats Reid on the shoulder, huffing out a laugh before she heads back to her desk.
You stay in Aaron’s office much longer than an hour that day.
-
Punctuality is important in the BAU. Really, if you’re not early, you’re late. You’ve always got to be ready, wheels up in ten, or five.
You suppose that doesn’t really apply to outside-of-the-office parties at Garcia’s.
It’s rare that you’re all available at the same time, from late nights at the bureau to families, it’s tough to make your schedules line up when you aren’t working, which is why whenever she can, Penelope likes to host drinks for the team.
You’re on your way there now, or, you should be. Instead, you’re getting ready in your bedroom while Aaron waits in your living room.
Hotch has offered to drive you to these things every time, and with every offer, comes your easy answer of ‘yes.’ He’d been outside in his car for five minutes before he decided to call, because you’re usually in his passenger seat within seconds of him pulling over by your building.
The ringing of your phone had your eyes blinking open, squinted against the sudden brightness of your TV. You’d accidentally fallen asleep, and, still disoriented, picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“Hey, everything okay?” It’s Aaron’s voice on the other line, and you pull your phone away for a second to check the time before sitting up quickly.
“Shit, Hotch, I must’ve fallen asleep. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s alright, I can wait for you.” He’d wait as long as you need, he thinks. The thought passes through like a leaf blown in the wind, freely, randomly.
“Have you been waiting long?” You ask, fingers tugging at a loose thread in your pants.
“No, don’t worry. Barely five minutes.”
And he still wanted to check on you.
“Why don’t you come in? My couch is probably more comfortable than your car, right?”
“You sure?” He checks, like he hasn’t been to your place before, like you’d ever not want him there.
“Get in here, Hotchner.”
You hung up before he could reply, and he laughed to himself in his car before shutting it off and doing exactly what you’d told him.
So, now, you’re rushing to find an outfit while Aaron sits on your couch by himself.
Even though he’s in the next room, you can feel his presence around you, the steady security he gives you, the warmth that seeps out of him even when he tries to hide it.
You settle on a knitted sweater, a skirt, and some tights, which you realize as you tug them on aren't the speediest of options, but it’s too late to change your mind now. With your hair figured out and the mascara that had smudged during your nap fixed, you step back out into the living room.
Aaron made himself at home while you were gone (he often feels that way with you, at home), sitting on your couch with his arms spread across the back. He looks better than he should there, suit stretched across his shoulders, and you have to clear your throat to snap yourself out of it.
“Okay, sorry again for the delay. I’m ready to go.”
He looks up as soon as you walk in, eyes skimming over your legs and the tights wrapped around them, your waist, up your neck. His gaze lands on your eyes the way it often does, like magnets.
He shakes his head, “don’t be sorry. We’ll be what they call ‘fashionably late.’”
You laugh, because who would’ve thought that the words ‘fashionably late’ would ever come out of Aaron Hotchner’s mouth.
“Who taught you that one, huh?”
“I like to keep my sources anonymous.”
“Well okay, then. Let’s go be fashionably late, Hotch.”
He lets you lead the way to the car, only jogging up ahead to open your door before you can reach it yourself.
During the drive to Penelope’s, you take control of the music with little objection from Aaron, and when it gets to a song you know he likes, you sing along, encouraging him to do the same.
“Let’s hear it, Agent Hotchner.” You hold your fist out like there’s a microphone in it, looking at him with a grin on your face.
“I can't sing.” Aaron’s fighting off a smile, because you’re sitting beside him, not too shy to sing along, being all cute and, briefly, he thinks about reaching out and grabbing your hand and holding on.
“Sure you can! Everyone can sing, come on.” You unfurl your faux microphone-holding fist and tug on the knot of his tie, “loosen up a little.”
And, because you have some way of convincing him of things—first lunch, now this—he humors you by joining in for one chorus of the song. When your eyes light up a little, and your grin only widens, he can’t bring himself to be too concerned of how bad he probably sounds.
By the time you’re at Garcia’s door you’re a solid hour late, yet you and Aaron walk up to the door with matching smiles all the same.
“I’m getting you to do that every time I hear that song now, I hope you know.”
“That was a one time special,” he says. He reaches over your shoulder to knock on the door. His hand brushes against you, featherlight and quick, a crackle over your skin.
On the other side, Morgan says, “must be the lovebirds” when he hears the sound.
You and Aaron don’t hear him, only broken out of your little shared bubble when Penelope opens the door. “There you guys are! I made your drinks but the ice might be melted by now. You know, ‘cause you’re late.”
You know this is directed towards you more than it is Hotch, because Garcia’s a little intimidated by him still. You also know she’s only joking, and greet her with a hug before stepping in.
Aaron isn’t far behind you, though at these things, he never is.
You’re met with warm greetings from the team when you walk in, and you chat for a bit, but it isn’t long before things split off into smaller conversations. They all know that Aaron drives you to these things, and, as profilers, they’re also all able to see the way you look at each other, the way the knot of his tie sits lower than usual.
In the corner, Emily leans over to Derek, saying, “usually it takes at least two drinks for Hotch’s tie to look like that.”
“I told you, they’re together,” Derek shrugs.
“I don’t think they know that,” Emily replies.
This time, Aaron hears them, and he can’t help but look towards you in the room the rest of the night, thinking and thinking and thinking.
He ends up deciding that they might have a point. That maybe, that shift in his heartbeat when you’re around isn’t nothing, isn’t just friends.
-
The flight home from a case always feels the longest.
On the way there, you’re packing every hour with information about what’s going on, talking to Garcia, reading police reports. You’re all on edge, eager to get out there and help and do your jobs,
Then, on the way home, with another case solved, all you’re thinking about is going home, sleeping in your own bed, and time seems to go slower.
If your name happens to be Aaron Hotchner, you’d spend the plane ride home doing paperwork that actually can wait.
You and Aaron sit next to each other on pretty much every flight, though the seats have never been assigned. It’s an unspoken thing, like your names are written on the fabric of the same two seats on the jet and that’s just the way it is.
The first time was early on in your time on the team. It was a tough case for you, and Hotch seemed to know it without you having to say anything, so, when you got on the jet to come home, he smiled that small, twitch of his lips smile at you and nodded at the seat next to him. You’ve been sitting there ever since.
Today, your flight is on the shorter side, but feels long the way it always does. Trying to keep yourself occupied, you pull out your earbuds and shuffle your playlist, hoping that the songs will speed things up.
“Sick of me already?” Hotch speaks up when he notices your headphones.
You tilt your head to look at him. He looks tired, the way you’re sure you do, too, but never any less handsome. His eyes are soft where they meet yours, paired with a hint of a smile that you’re always able to catch.
“Sick of you, Hotch? Never.” You nod at the file he has open on the small table, “just didn’t want to distract you.”
“I thought you enjoyed distracting me. Always telling me I work too much.”
“‘Cause it’s true,” you say. “That doesn’t mean you listen.”
“I listen to you more than I listen to most people.” Aaron’s voice is gentle when he says it, the words sinking in and melting you just a little, sugary sweet. It could mean absolutely nothing, but with the way he keeps his eyes steady on yours, you don’t think it does.
“Listen to this, then,” you hand him one of your earbuds, and his fingers brush yours when he takes it from you. “But you can’t make fun of me if a musical soundtrack comes on, okay?”
“Okay,” he huffs a small laugh, and you feel a little brighter. “I promise.”
You’re aware of the team having their own conversations in the rows in front of you and Hotch, but you can’t bring yourself to join in, because you and Aaron are sharing your earbuds and his head is bent just a little closer to yours. It’s delicate, and you’ll do your best not to break it.
You talk a little longer, until it naturally fizzles out and Hotch is back to working on his files and you’re bobbing your head along to your songs. Only now, Aaron sits closer to you, his arm against yours.
He’s not sure what to do with his newfound realization that his feelings for you run far deeper than friendship. All Aaron knows is that he likes the feeling of you beside him, and that he’s planning on keeping you there as long as you’ll let him.
It’s quiet between the two of you aside from your occasional ‘this is a good one,’ and his hum of acknowledgement.
Eventually, you’re relaxed enough that your eyes grow heavy, the sleep you’ve been lacking suddenly catching up to you, and when you hit a patch of slower songs you’re fighting to stay awake.
When your head lulls onto Hotch’s shoulder, you jerk your head up, “sorry, Aaron.”
His chest does something funny. A jump. It’s not often you call him Aaron, and he’d listen to the sound of his name on your lips on a loop if he could. Because he can’t help himself, he scooches himself even closer to you.
He decides to call you something different, too, saying, “it’s alright, honey.”
You’re too sleepy to really read into that one, all you feel is the flutter in your stomach and Aaron’s hand on your head, gently guiding it to his shoulder.
When he’s sure you’re asleep, Hotch looks away from his files and over to you. Your cheek is squished against his shoulder, your lashes fanned shut. He thinks you’re the prettiest girl he’s ever seen.
Aaron doesn’t even feel the smile that spreads over his face as he reaches up and pushes your hair away from your face. He’s completely unaware of the eyes that catch him, far too focused on you.
Emily turned around when she realized she hadn’t heard your voice in a bit, and she did it just in time to catch Hotch’s movement. Instead of saying something, she turns back around and shakes her head to herself.
Hopeless, she thinks.
Sleep doesn’t come so easily with this job, with the things you see, so Aaron can’t help but try and stay steady for you, and if that leads to him letting his eyes close and resting his head on yours, then so be it.
It’s not until the end of the flight that the team checks on the two of you. As everyone stands and grabs their go bags, they notice the two of you, asleep next to each other, earbud wires hanging between you.
“Should we wake them up?” JJ asks.
“Hotch doesn’t get enough sleep as it is,” Spencer chimes in. “Neither does she, actually.”
Of course, Derek finishes with, “let’s leave the lovebirds to it,” before the team gets off the plane.
It’s only about twenty minutes later that Aaron does wake up, but he feels more well-rested than he has in a while, even with the kink in his neck.
Blinking his eyes open, he’s met with an empty jet and the comforting weight of your head on his shoulder. “Shit,” he sighs.
He debates waking you, ultimately deciding that you’d probably rather sleep in your bed rather than the seat of the BAU’s jet. Reaching up, he pulls your earbuds away, setting them on the table. With a brush of his fingertips to your cheek, he coaxed you awake.
“Hey, honey,” Aaron’s nearly whispering, like he’s afraid to scare you. Or, maybe, he’s convinced that if he moves too quickly, too loudly, this whole thing will fade away as if he’d been dreaming. “Wake up, we’re home.”
“Hm?” You grumble, scrunching your nose when he brushes your cheek again.
“We fell asleep, but we landed.”
“Oh, god.” You sit up properly, lifting your head. “I’m sorry, Aaron. Hotch.”
“Aaron is good,” he eases you. “Come on, I’ll drive you.”
Sleep-hazed, or maybe just happy that he can be Aaron to you, you agree easily and take his hand when he offers it, letting him lead you to his car.
-
You’ve been spending more time at Aaron’s ever since that flight. In the car, he’d convinced you to stay over at his place in the guest room, since it was closer. With your go bag already in his car and heavy, sleepy eyes, it was hard for you to do anything but agree.
It’s another slice of his life that he’s let you see, and you can’t help but feel like it means something, like you’re stepping further and further away from being coworkers who are friends and towards something different. Something more.
That flight feels like the catalyst, the thing that caused things to shift into what they are now.
Aaron’s couch is much more comfortable than yours, and though you’ve yet to spend the night again, you’re sitting there with him at almost every chance. The time off you get is rare, and Aaron wanting to spend it with you sends flutters to your stomach whenever you think about it.
You feel like you know him better, getting to see his space, how he chose to decorate, what colors he likes, which ones he doesn’t. You also know what temperature he likes to set his thermostat.
“Do you enjoy living in a refrigerator?” You ask, hands tucked into your sleeves. “Just wondering.”
Aaron laughs, a small huff, “I think you just run cold, honey.”
He’s been calling you that a lot, too. Honey.
“No way, Hotchner. Your house is what runs cold. Or maybe you’re cold-blooded.”
Not with you, he thinks. Years and years of doing what he does, Hotch might even call himself cold when he’s thinking a little too hard. But never cold with you. He thinks that might be impossible for him.
“Shhh, don’t tell anyone my secret,” he says, his arm brushing against yours from where he sits next to you on his couch. “Where are you cold?”
“Can’t feel my toes, Aaron. I might be out of commission for the next case.”
“Well we can’t lose our best girl, can we?” Best girl, he says. Like he means it, like it’s simple. “I’ve got some thick socks you can grab. Bottom drawer.”
Just like that, he’s cracked another wall of his down even further, giving you permission to go into his bedroom as if you’ve been in there a thousand times.
“Really?”
“Unless you’d rather not feel your toes-“
“Okay, okay,” you stop him, unable to fight your smile. “Thanks, Aaron.”
When you stand and head towards his room, Aaron can’t stop himself from thinking that you belong there, in his home, his room, his life. You fit in so seamlessly he wishes you’d never leave.
He stands up too, because the couch suddenly feels sort of empty without you beside him, without your warmth. He walks over to his thermostat on the wall and turns it up for you.
You’ve always thought that you can tell a lot about a person from where they live, and seeing Aaron’s bedroom now solidifies it. His place does too, but there’s something about his bedroom that feels much more personal.
Here, there’s more of him, little bits of his life scattered around. A picture of him as a kid with his parents on the dresser, the newspaper’s crossword sitting completely finished on his nightstand, his bed neatly made.
You smile at the framed photo before slipping the top drawer open and finding the pair of socks he’d been talking about. As much as you’d love to snoop, you don’t want to invade his privacy in any way. Besides, from Aaron, even a glimpse of his space feels special.
You slip on the socks before you leave his room, letting them bunch at your ankles.
As soon as you walk back into the living room, Aaron’s phone rings. Glancing at you softly, almost apologetically though he’s got nothing to be sorry about—you work with him, you know how important a call can be—he picks it up.
“Hotchner,” he says, holding it to his ear. His voice is different this way, more professional, controlled. Never any less pleasing to hear.
He’d wanted to say something about how good you look in his clothes when his phone rang, Garcia’s name flashing on the screen. Aaron wishes it was someone else, only to spend more time with you this way.
“Sorry to call late, sir,” Penelope says. “We’ve got a case. Missing kid; it’s urgent.”
“Don’t be sorry, Garcia. We’re on our way.”
“Wait, we?” She asks, curious as always.
“What’s going on?” You ask Aaron.
“Got a case. I’ll drive, honey.” He lets the pet name slip, like it’s a habit.
On the other line, Garcia’s grinning to herself in her office. She’d had a suspicion of who on the team Hotch would be with outside of work, and hearing your voice, and his use of the word ‘honey’ all sticky sweet, she knows she’s onto something.
“Oh, that’s ‘we,’” Penelope’s voice teases. “Tell her I’ll see you guys soon!”
Aaron shakes his head, fighting his smile. “Bye, Garcia.”
He hangs up and looks from his phone to you, your eyes already on him, corners of your mouth tugged up just a little like you’d heard what Garcia said, heard the lilt in her voice. Like you liked the idea of you and Aaron being a unit. We.
He likes that idea, too.
Back at the BAU, Garcia calls Derek next, who picks up with his classic, “hey, babygirl.”
First, she tells him that he needs to come into the office, that they’ve got a case, then, “you’re never going to believe this.”
Penelope loves to talk, and Derek’s happy to listen, so she tells him about how you’d been with Aaron when she called, and that you were on your way together.
“I give them another week, max, before they’re holding hands when they come in.” Derek laughs, because he can see yours and Hotch’s feelings so easily, plain as day, and he loves to be right about things.
“How mad will Hotch be when he finds out that we talk about his relationship?” Penelope’s mostly joking, only a fraction concerned.
“If the boss didn’t want us talking about it, he shouldn’t be so obvious, sweetheart.”
Once you arrive at the office, you don’t catch Penelope and Derek’s shared looks behind yours and Aaron’s—who happens to be carrying both his and your go bag—backs.
And if anyone notices the loose socks around your ankles, they don’t say anything about it.
-
You’re not supposed to go off on your own unless it’s absolutely necessary. You know that, the team knows that. Aaron, who is always trying to keep you as safe as possible, enforces it.
You guess that this time might be up for debate.
When it comes to what you do, you have to trust your instincts most of the time. And today, your gut told you to make a decision that might not have been safe, but to you, it felt like what you had to do.
Aaron had been on the phone with you, trying to figure out a way to make the car drive any faster to get to you. He’d heard it in your voice, in the tone of it, that he couldn’t convince you to wait for someone else to show up.
“I have to do this, Aaron,” you’d said. While the team would normally probably tease him about you calling him Aaron, as if it isn’t his name, they’d known not to interrupt this time. “You know I do.”
“You don’t have to.” His hands tightened on the steering wheel as he spoke. “We’ll be there soon, alright? Just-”
“I’m sorry.” And then, you hung up.
In the end, going in when you did had been the right move. A life had been saved, and you’d slowed the guy down enough that the police were able to arrest him when they arrived. All it cost you was a cut and a bruise on your cheek.
So, your instincts weren’t so bad.
Aaron, however, disagrees. Logically, he knows that he would’ve done the exact same thing you did, knows the rest of the team would’ve, too. But when it comes to you, he has a hard time thinking logically.
After you hung up on him, all he could do was breathe and breathe and breathe over the heavy thumping of his heartbeat and the worry spinning in his head. He drove the quickest he could manage, the car silent inside. A static.
It’s not that he doubts your abilities—he’s always thought you were incredible, even before the friendship, even before now—only that the idea of you being alone with such a bad man makes him feel sick.
He’d take your place in a heartbeat, if he could, just to make sure you’d be safe.
By the time he and the rest of the team get to the scene, you’re walking out of the building with a hand pressed to your cheek and a paramedic leading you to a nearby ambulance.
Aaron spots you right away, his eyes scanning the small crowd through red and blue lights and conversations surrounding him. When he spots you, everything goes quiet.
His first thought is, thank god she’s alive, then, it’s fuck, she’s hurt.
Without a word to anyone, he heads over in your direction right away. He meets you at the ambulance, where you sit on the small bench inside while the paramedic presses your cheek with gauze.
“Honey.” It comes out in a breath. Relief and pain all at once.
You look over to him, his hair a little messy, his eyes wide and roaming all over you like he’s checking for any other injuries. He cares about you, and it’s written all over him.
“Aaron. I’m okay.” You hold a hand out, and he grabs it, sitting beside you on the bench in the ambulance. “Promise.”
For now, he nods, letting the paramedic do their job bandaging up your cheek. When they’re finished, they hand you a spare bandage saying, “it’s gonna bruise, and it might feel sore for a bit, but you’re all patched up.”
The paramedic leaves after that, probably going to check on other people. The lights inside the ambulance seem to cocoon you, a bright difference to the darkness outside.
The first thing Aaron says is, “let me see.”
His hands reach for your face, rough fingertips gently holding your jaw, tilting you so that he can look at your cheek. It’s a little swollen, discolored where you must’ve been hit. There’s a furrow in his brow, something that looks like a pout on none other than Aaron Hotchner.
“Hey,” you grab his wrists, but his hands stay on your face. “I’m fine.”
Aaron’s always worried, he’s always cared about you and about everyone on the team, but this is different. He was usually able to hide things much better than this. Much better than with you.
Now, all he sees is the tiny bloodstain on your shirt and the bandage on your cheek. All he feels is your hands squeezing his wrists and your eyes locked on his.
“You should have waited,” he says. “I could have been there.”
“Hotchner,” your deadpan tone is intact, which he’ll take as a win, even if it’s directed towards him. “You and I both know you would have done the same. I had to.”
One of his hands shifts to cup your non-injured cheek. Normally, he’d be much more composed while working, but he can’t bring himself to care about how he must look right now.
“I know you did,” he tells you, because he does. “I just wish that you didn’t. I don’t like seeing you hurt.”
Your stomach is tumbling, rolling, your heart doing silly things in your chest. You can hardly feel the pain of your cheek anymore when his hand is on the other, his palm warm against your skin, his gaze even warmer.
“I’m hardly hurt, Aaron. Just a scratch.”
“Right. One that required medical attention. That’s more than just a scratch, honey.”
“If you say so, Hotchner.”
He shifts his hands so that they fall into your lap, palms up and fingers instantly finding yours, tangling together perfectly. Like puzzle pieces.
“Good job, by the way.” Hotch rubs his thumb over your skin once, back and forth. “You did the right thing.”
“Learned from the best,” you say.
You’re both oblivious to the fact that the team is watching from a distance, and that the two of you look so lovesick it’s ridiculous that you haven’t spilled your feelings yet. You’re both absolutely fucked.
Where she stands with the team, Emily shakes her head, “I haven’t seen Hotch like this since… ever.”
Beside her, JJ merely shrugs, like it’s obvious, “yeah, they’re in love.”
Spencer looks at you and Aaron in that ambulance with a smile. “The odds of you guys being right are very, very high.”
-
+1
Aaron Hotchner was never the biggest fan of birthdays. Was never big into the cakes and making wishes, the song and the presents and the fuss of it all.
When he started at the bureau, it stayed that way. Days off were rare enough as it was, so he’d always work on his birthday. And while he kept the signed cards from the team, he treated it as any other day. Nothing special.
This year, you’re on a mission to change that.
While it isn’t the first of Aaron’s birthdays you’ve spent with him, it’s the first one since the two of you have grown as close as you have, since you’ve felt the way you do. You’re just hoping to make it a good birthday for him.
You’ve roped the whole team into it. Decorating the conference room with streamers and balloons and a sign that hangs crooked on the wall, bringing in a cake that reads ‘Happy Birthday Hotch’ in frosting, and keeping it all a secret.
Of course, you’ve all already said happy birthday to him, and you’ve got a present stashed under your desk for later, but you’ve been doing your best to act natural even when the anticipation of your surprise for him eats at your stomach a little.
Surprises are a tricky thing, and there’s no way of knowing whether he’ll like it or not. You’ll just have to wait and see.
While in his office, the team had made it seem like they’d all left for the day, saying their goodbyes to Hotch. Instead of leaving, though, they’ve been hidden in the conference room waiting for you to bring him in.
“Aaron,” you say, knocking on his office door. “I think I lost an earring. Do you think you could help me look for it?”
Because you’re the one asking, Aaron says, “‘course, honey. Where do you think it is?”
You smile, because he’s fallen into your trap easily, because you know that he probably would search for an earring with you if you’d actually lost one.
“I remember having it on in the conference room, so maybe there.”
He stands from his desk, gesturing for you to lead the way with his hand held out. You grab onto it before he can drop it, tangling your fingers and leading him behind you.
Aaron lets you guide him, and when you open the door to the conference room and flick on the lights, he’s met with the team’s grinning faces and a chorus of, “surprise!”
For a moment, he’s speechless, frozen in his spot in the doorway with your hand in his.
No, Aaron’s never been the biggest fan of birthdays, but maybe that’s because nobody’s ever done something like this for him. You came into his life all sweet smiles and now you’re throwing him a surprise party? He’s never ever liked someone the way he likes you.
So much that like is spilling into a four letter word and he’s happy to let it.
You know him well enough to know that he doesn’t like being the center of attention too much, so the only people in the room are those of the BAU. His closest friends. And you, his favorite person.
Before he can say anything he’s being spoken to by the team, getting a ‘happy birthday, boss,’ from Derek, a spill about how hard it was to keep this a secret from Penelope, a grin from Spencer, a tip about how you’d organized all of this from Emily, a squeeze to the shoulder from JJ.
When he finally gets the chance, the others split into their own conversations, Aaron tugs you aside to the corner of the room.
“You did all of this for me?” He asks, head bent to catch your eye.
Although you’d caught the signature Hotchner smile—closed-mouthed and quick—when he saw the surprise, you’re nervous about what he might say. You worry that you’ve done too much, that he’d been pretending to like it for your sake.
“I’m sorry if it’s a bit much,” you start, anxiously tugging at your sleeves. “I wasn’t sure if you liked surprises, I know not everyone does, but I wanted to do something for you because I care about you. A lot. And birthdays are meant to be celebrated, you know?”
Aaron can’t help but let a smile spread over his face as you speak; a real smile. His heart is light, his feelings for you melting through him like the soft pink of cotton candy. He doesn’t think you could ever do anything that he wouldn’t like.
“I’ll clean it all up, too, I prom-”
Your rambling is cut off with his lips on yours. He’s kissing you.
It’s soft, the press of his mouth against yours, and it takes you a second to push back. It stays delicate, a dance between the two of you like you’d practiced a million times before.
His hands skate down your arms to hold your hands, weaving his fingers with yours, squeezing like he’s making sure you know this is real.
You feel it all over, your stomach tumbling, your heart beating in a rhythm that thumps his name. Aaron, Aaron, Aaron, over and over.
It’s a kiss worth a thousand words that you haven’t said yet, a kiss full of feelings and meaning and you know it, just by the way he does it, because you know him and he knows you. It’s you and Aaron, and it feels like the beginning of something huge. Of the rest of your life, maybe.
When he pulls back, Hotch rests his forehead against yours, giving your head a gentle nudge, locking his brown eyes on yours.
“It’s perfect,” he says.
The next thing you hear is Derek Morgan cheering, “I knew it!”
Similar words come from the rest of the team.
“Finally,” from Emily.
“About time,” from JJ.
“This isn’t surprising,” from Spencer, who smiles while saying it.
A sweet, “yay,” from Penelope.
Distracted by Aaron kissing you, you’d sort of forgotten they were there. Bashful, you tuck your head beneath Aaron’s chin, forehead against his collar. He simply tightens his hands around yours.
And when it’s time for cake, this year, Aaron Hotchner makes a wish on his birthday candles. He wishes to spend every other birthday just like this. With you.
thank you so so much for reading!!! if you liked it, please please please consider reblogging/commenting and letting me know what you thought! love you <3

IN RUINS
Tumblr media
PAIRING: spencer reid x fem reader
SUMMARY: spencer reid has always had something against you. during a particular case, spencer snaps and says something he shouldn’t have said leaving you in ruins. but what happens when your in danger and he still hasn’t explained why he reacted the way he did. will he have the time?
“ what happened?” hotch says standing infront of the big white board that had some very gruesome pictures of 5 victims splayed out on a park bench. he’s standing tall and strong with his hands crossed in his dark grey suit. he’s looking at you and spencer, who’s walking in right behind you slamming the door close.
“ It’s her fault.” spencer says quickly moving to the other side of the room opposite you, trying to get as far away from you as possible.
you take a deep breath in trying your absolute hardest not to roll your eyes and cross your hands in annoyance and disappointment. “ it’s not my fault reid-”
“ woah woah what the heck happened?” morgan says pushing himself back in the precinct chair watching you and spencer. he looks at spencer, he sees the strong look of disgust and annoyance spencer is shooting at you. he looks at you, he notices you looking at spencer with a disappointed look.
“ she told the unsubs family we are after the unsub-” spencer spits out looking over at hotch, waiting for him to yell at you or lecture you.
“ wait spence we don’t even know who the unsub is. what do you mean?” jj says turning her head to look at spencer confusion written on her face. “ exactly! thank you jj!” you reply throwing your hands up.
“ michael miller is our unsub hotch.” spencer says completely ignoring your attempt to reason with him, his eyes stay on hotch waiting for him to snap at you or just lecture you. “ wait a minute i thought michael miller had a solid alibi.” morgan says laying back in his chair resting his arms on the arm rests. “ he does have a solid alibi it checks out-” spencer cuts you off. “ it does not check out!” spencer says.
“ yes it does! hotch we asked his dad who confirmed his son came home at 8:30 pm from football practice.” you say growing impatient looking at hotch, hotch’s eyebrows are furrowed tightly. his arms are still crossed listening to you and spencer bicker back and fourth.
“ just because his dad showed the tiniest bit of concern about his son when the fbi showed up to his doorstep does not make him a reliable source, just because you never had a dad who showed any bit of concern and now when you finally see a dad care about their kid does not mean you should not fall into their trap just because you never had a trap to fall into.” spencer spits out finally looking at you.
he watches as your expression hardens. he watches as humiliation and embarrassment fill your once determined eyes, the determined eyes who tried to reason with spencer at-least 4 minutes ago. 4 minutes, that’s how long it takes for your perspective of someone to change. he watches as your eyebrows tremble, a habit you have when your trying to fight back tears. he watches as your throat trembles too, probably trying to fight back that agonising choke you get when your about to cry.
the entire room goes quiet. spencers gaze remains on you, slowly watching your soul shatter because of his words. your gaze remains on spencer, slowly feeling your soul shatter because of his words.
the door that spencer slammed close 4 minutes ago opens, rossi and emily walking in. “ michael millers alibi checks out. we’ve got pictures of him at football practice from 5pm to 8:25pm. he wouldn’t have had the time to commit the murders.” rossi says opening the door for emily. “ also his teammates described him as an extrovert and outgoing which is not what we profiled the unsub to be.” emily says with her hands inside her pockets nodding looking at everyone surrounding the table.
“ i feel as though we interrupted something.” rossi says eyeing everyone in the room raising an eyebrow in confusion. he could feel the tension. emily could too. which is why she immediately looks over at morgan for answers. morgan looks at her for a split second before returning his gaze on you.
“ y/n-” spencer attempts. he tries to bring himself to take a step towards you, but it’s like his words somehow built a barrier between you and him that he now can’t even physically cross. or maybe he’s just scared that if he takes a step towards you, you’ll take a step back. away from him.
you swallow the gut wrenching feeling of tears crawling up your throat. you look down to your converse. “ i’m gonna go…uhm get coffee.” you say turning around immediately walking towards the door. “ excuse me.” you whisper pushing past rossi and emily.
“ oh wonder boy..” garcia says through the tv screen, her bright purple tinted lips which usually wear a bright smile on her face now wearing a frown. her tone disappointed as she presses her heart eye fuzzy emoji pen into her cheek. “ i uhm did my usual background checking on the uhm..list of potential unsubs and a uhm…scott anderson has a sketchy background. i’ve just sent his file to you my pretties.” garcia says stuttering quite a few times finding it hard to sneak her usually bubbly nicknames into the conversation after what had just happened. “ thank you garcia. jj take y/n and check out scott anderson.” hotch says looking at jj his arms finally by his side.
jj nods standing up walking towards the door “ i-i can go” spencer says turning his body towards jj. “ stay.” hotch replies his voice stern and bold. he looks at spencer his eyebrows furrowed.
jj closes the door. “ sit.” hotch says to spencer pointing to the empty seat at the table, spencer slowly walks towards the seat sitting down. “ you shouldn’t have said that spencer.” hotch says crossing his hands. “ hotch-” spencer attempts but is quickly cut off, “ i’m not finished. I get it. your worried spencer. your scared-”
“ hotch-” spencer is cut off once again. “ you may think your hiding it well spencer but your not. we know the unsub is targeting female victims which have similar features to l/n. if your too close to the case spencer-” it’s spencer’s turn to now cut hotch off. “ but i’m not too close to the case hotch!” spencer replies. he wanted the similarities between you and the victims to only be in his head because he wanted only him, himself to notice the similarities between you and the victims. you both have the same hair color, hair length, both considered to be attractive, both have similar personalities, and similar taste in clothing. he didn’t want it to be true. but now he knows that they are, and they’re not just in his head he’s even more worried.
“ your stuttering spencer. you do that when your worried or nervous.” emily says pulling a chair from the table. spencer shoots his eyes away from hotch to emily’s. his gaze softens a bit, emily’s tone wasn’t like hotchs. it wasn’t as stern or bold. it was rather understanding and gentle. “ i just cant control myself around her.” spencer says looking down at the picture of the fourth victim who had been wearing the exact same pair of converse your wearing now. “ well your going to have to learn how to control yourself pretty boy. you shouldn’t have said that.” morgan says looking at spencer. spencer sighs hiding his face in his hands. “ i just..god i’m so stupid.” spencer groans rubbing his tired eyes.
“ stupidity is what ended my third marriage.” rossi says crossing his hands leaning against the bulletin board with a small chuckle, morgan looks at rossi and laughs. “ well thank god pretty boy isn’t married. he’d be the new rossi.” morgan says tilting his head to the side looking at spencer trying to lighten the mood, spencer who still has his head in his hands. there’s a million thoughts going through his head, all of them are about you. all of them are about how he should apologize. is he even allowed to apologize? will you let him apologize to you? would you accept his apology? what if you didn’t? did he just ruin his friendship with you? no screw friendship, he doesn’t just want to be friends. he wouldn’t be as sensitive as he is to this case if he just wanted to remain friends. he’s in love with you. spencer reid is in love with you. and he just potentially ruined any slight chance of ever having you know that he loves you. just because he’s stupid and didn’t think before he spoke.
“ are you okay?” jj says both hands on the steering wheel turning around to look at you next to her, in the passenger seat. your heads turnt towards the window, your picking at your nails. a habit of yours. you turn to look at jj and nod. “ yeah i’m fine why wouldn’t i be?” you ask tilting your head to the side with a confusing smile. you know exactly why your not okay. but for some reason, you just can’t bring yourself to actually be upset over it. what’s there to be upset about? what spencer said is true. he’s not wrong. why are you making excuses for him? what he said was not okay. totally not okay. why do you have to make excuses for every male figure in your life for when they’ve done something wrong? why do you always make them the victim and you the villain. you just don’t wanna lose them right? because you know that if your the victim and their the villain they’ll never apologise and the entire relationship will disappear, it always does.
“ what spencer said-” jj is talking in that tone, that tone that she would speak in whenever something was wrong. in a motherly kind of tone. you immediately shake your head, “ it’s- it’s fine jj really, i don’t care. can we just please forget it ever happened? lets just work on the case.” you say running a hand through your hair biting your lower lip trying to stop your voice from trembling, you know when your about to cry and you have that heavy feeling in your throat? you swallow it hard. you turn your head to look at the window not waiting for a response from jj. jj clears her throat, “ no yeah of course.” she nods smiling turning her head back around.
“ this should be it…” jj mumbles stopping the car, parked infront of a 2 story cabin. you unbuckle your seatbelt and open the car door. “ it looks like no one’s home, there’s no car. we profiled that the unsub would have a van or a truck..” jj says closing the car door looking at the house. “ maybe he wouldn’t leave something so valuable to him outside, to the eye of the public. he’s possessive he thinks the entire world revolves around him he probably thinks someone would try to steal it.” you reply reaching in your pocket for your id. jj doing the same thing. you two walk to the front door, you in the front,
you knock on the door. you put your hand against your hip waiting for the door to open. “ we should ask the neighbours. maybe they’ll know-” you knock on the door again. “ scott anderson. fbi.” you say knocking on the door again. jj puts both of her hands on her waist. “ looks like he’s not home-” your cut off by the door swinging open.
you immediately turn your head around. “ scott anderson?” you ask looking at the man infront of you. you know it’s scott anderson, penelope had already sent his id picture on the drive over. he looks at you, then looks at jj. “ who are you..” he says looking directly at jj. “ i’m agent l/n with the fbi and this is agent jareau. do you mind if we come inside?” you ask smiling holding up your id.
he doesn’t even bother looking at your id. “ yeah whatever.” he moves to the side, making room for you and jj. you nod turning around to look at jj. she nods. you step inside jj following you.
“ do you live alone?” you ask analysing the house, its organised. weird for someone that’s his age. “ uhm yeah i do. what’s wrong with that?” he asks crossing his hands. you chuckle, “ no no nothings wrong with that, i also lived alone when i was 17.” you reply smiling. “ i’m 19.” he says looking at you, eyeing you up and down smiling. “ your pretty organised for a 19 year old.” jj says raising an eyebrow also crossing her hands smiling. “ guess i was just raised that way.” he replies rubbing his lips together. you nod. “ how were you raised scott..if you don’t mind me asking.” you say looking around the house. “ yeah scott how did you manage to score such a house at your age. do you work?” jj asks grabbing a picture frame. “ no i don’t work-” he turns to look at jj. “ put that down.” he snaps speed walking to jj. you immediately reach for your gun.
“ right..sorry. you don’t like people touching your stuff.” jj replies throwing her hands up in defeat. he snatches the picture frame. he grabs it caressing it gently, jj looks at you with wide eyes. you raise an eyebrow in confusion. “ scott. why do you have a picture of my colleague framed?” jj asks looking at the frame scott’s holding. your eyes widen.
“ oh god oh god. where’s y/n and jj?” penelope says aggressively tapping on her keyboard. “ what? what’s wrong?” spencer is the first to respond shooting up from the office chair just at the mention of your name. “ they’re at scott anderson’s why?” hotch says turning around, away from the white board to the tv. garcia starts tearing up, “ i-i did some deep digging and scott anderson has a blog about y/n..” garcia says in a shaky tone. no. no. no. no. no not again please.
his heart stopped for a split second. his hand start sweating. the air has been sucked out of his lungs. why is it so hard to breathe? why is there no air to breathe? there’s a million thoughts running through his head, they’re still about you. but now they’re worse. your in danger. your with the unsub. the unsub who has already killed five people. your in the same house with the unsub. the unsub who has a blog dedicated to you. and the last time you saw spencer you were teary eyed. no it can’t be the last time. no. please be safe.
his sweaty shaky hands reach for his phone. he clicks on your contact. hotch grabs his phone and immediately calls jj. spencer immediately puts the phone up against his ear. it rings. rossi and emily immediately stand up, “ penelope send us the address to scott’s house now.” emily says walking to the door. it’s still ringing. spencer starts biting his nails. his hearts pounding. the ringing of the phone case is haunting him. what is happening on the other side of the phone. why aren’t you answering. you always answer the phone. why is it still ringing? y/n why aren’t you answering.
“ god damn it!” spencer shouts into the phone as it keeps ringing. morgan stands up, “ hotch we gotta go.” he says standing up shoving his phone into his pocket.
the ringing stops. spencer’s heart stops. his breathing stops. everyone in the room looks at spencer waiting for any kind of confirmation. “ y/n you’ve gotta get out of there with jj!” spencer says stuttering with a shaky voice. hes scared. hes so so scared. hes never been more scared in his life. it’s quiet. why is it quiet? why aren’t you answering? what’s wrong. god y/n.
“ hey mom.” you reply. spencer takes a deep breath in. he stops biting his nails. he wipes his wet fingers on his pants. his hearts racing. your in danger. why are you calling him mom if your not in danger. oh god. he feels like he can’t breathe again. he can’t focus. he can’t do this. he can’t do this. he can’t do this without you. breathe spencer. she’s in danger spencer. she’s all that matters.
“ y/n. god i…” he chokes. “ you already figured it out didn’t you.” he says his throat feeling scratchy. he hears you giggle on the other side of the phone, your laugh erupts the butterflies in his stomach. under any other circumstances he would absolutely hate the butterflies in his stomach and would be mad at you for making him feel such way. but now they bring a sense of comfort, they make him feel normal for a split second. that this is not that big of a deal, he’s just calling the girl he really likes and he got butterflies from hearing her beautiful laughs.
“ yeah of course. i called aunt lizzie for her birthday mom i’m not stupid.” you respond. god your voice is so beautiful, but he can hear it. he can fear the slight fear in your voice. maybe other people wouldn’t hear it, but he can. spencer can. and it’s killing him. it’s tearing his heart apart. it’s making his legs shake. “ d-did he hurt you- is he gonna hurt you?” spencer says gripping his jeans tightly. he hears you laugh again, “ yeah mom.” you say.
he feels his legs going weak.

wait your new hotch blurb got me thinking what about they got secretly married and everyone knows that hotch is married they just don’t know it’s to bau!reader because he seemed very genuine in the wanting privacy so (after complaining) they respected that, and maybe one of the team members sees hotch and bau!reader kissing in the hallway of a hotel or something and confront him about cheating on his wife
"How could you cheat on your wife?"
Penelope's harsh, degrading accusation hits Aaron directly in the chest, through the layers of stoicism that he's come to forge over the years of working in criminal investigation and straight to his heart.
All Hotch can manage is a, "What?", and Penelope's eyes dim further.
"Don't do that, Hotch. I saw you. I saw you and Y/N kissing in your office. How could you do that to your wife?"
She looks so crestfallen that Aaron's chest actually aches, so unprepared to see the famously bubbly Penelope Garcia close to tears. Close to tears because of him, no less.
Aaron might have chosen his words more carefully if he hadn't been so startled by Penelope's unusual devastation, but his jumbled brain forgoes its job and his mouth takes over, uttering the thoughtless statement, "That's- that's what she's there for."
And in his mind, it's true, if not the complete truth. You are there for him to kiss, you're there to be kissed and loved and appreciated and cherished, but he's momentarily forgotten that Penelope doesn't know that you and his mystery wife are the same person, and his words so easily warp into possessiveness and disregard.
Her face contorts into a mixture of disgust and rage that could take out a serial killer, and he seriously considers recruiting her as Chief Lecturer of the BAU, "Hotch? How- how could you say that? That your wife is just- just some thing to wait on you while you run off with someone else? You- Aaron, I can't believe you, I thought you were better than that!"
She tries storming away, tears budding in her eyes but Aaron catches her elbow, ignoring the way she flails and squirms at his touch.
"Let go of me!" She tearily demands, but he grabs her by the other arm now, holding both of her shoulders.
"No, Penelope, listen-" He tries, reminding himself to send her to Derek later for a self-defense lesson, because the weak shoves that she's pushing at his chest with do very little.
"No! No, I'm tired of listening to men," She shrieks, "You were supposed to be better than that, Aaron! I trusted you, you were supposed to be the kind of man that I could admire, and- but you're not! You're just like the rest of them, you're some egotistical, possessive, heavy-handed, domineering son of a-!"
"Y/N is my wife." Aaron cuts her off, his voice slightly raised, but not harsh. Never harsh, not to the sniffling mess of ruffles and glitter in his arms that handed him her resume on pink stationary all those years ago.
She falls silent, finally, but her lips still tremble. Aaron squeezes her arms tighter, not rough but comforting, "Y/N is my wife. We married privately late last year. We kept it secret for safety reasons, but I'll admit we didn't need to hide it from all of you. I was not cheating on my wife, I would never-" He thinks momentarily of Haley, of the gut-wrenching sound of her cell phone ringing with a call she wasn't brave enough to answer in front of him, "I would never do that to Y/N."
It's a lot of new information to process, and Aaron grants Penelope all the time she needs to work through it. When her red-stained lips part again she breathes, "You married Y/N?"
"I did." Aaron nods, and though it's not the time to smile, he can't help that a ghostly one flits over his features at the mere thought of the day he'd married you, "I'll show you pictures when we're done here. Penelope, you can trust me. I don't blame you for accusing me- in fact, I'm glad that you did. I'm glad that your loyalty isn't blind. But Y/N is my wife, and that's why I kissed her."
A very wobbly, "Oh." Is all that Penelope can manage, and she sniffles again, staring at his tie rather than his face as he holds her steady in the hallway. He's glad that they've both shown up early for the day, but you're due to return with coffee for the three of you any minute now, and he offers her his pocket square to wipe beneath her eyes.
"You said-" She chokes out sheepishly, voice unsteady as she smears the tears off of her cheeks, "You said you have pictures?"
That's how you find them when you return, seated on the couch in his office peering down at his phone. You have to set the tray you'd been carrying down on Aaron's desktop before you can properly greet either of them, but you're immediately alarmed by the tears streaked over Garcia's cheeks when she stands to face you.
"You-" She starts, not giving you a second to speak, "-are a rat! You got married," She gushes, and Aaron chuckles deeply from beside her, standing and pocketing his phone.
"You got married to our boss, and you told me nothing," She hisses, but slumps so easily into your chest for a hug that you're more than willing to give her.
"I'm sorry, Penny," You gush, squeezing her tight, "We just- we were worried about safety. The more people we told, the more dangerous it would become, so we didn't share it with anyone. But- but we should have told the team, I know."
She sniffles and you draw back to pick up her drink from behind you, sugary and pink and topped with a thick layer of whipped cream, "I got you a drink. Forgive me?"
"Reluctantly," She tries scowling, but she's never been very good at it. She takes the drink from you huffily, jamming the straw inside and taking a drag at the thick liquid. It's barely nine in the morning, far too early for the concoction she's sipping, but she nods after she draws back from the straw.
"This is delicious," She decides, "And you two are traitors, and I'm telling everyone about this."
"You should," Aaron laughs, stepping up behind you to press his shoulder to your own. It's comforting just having him there, and you relax against him as Penelope takes her leave.
"I mean it," She warns, wiping another stray tear from her cheek and sipping at her strawberry drink, "I'm telling everyone. I'm- I'm gonna hire some guy to fly a plane over the city, and the banner is gonna say, 'Y//N Y/L/N and Aaron Hotchner got married without me'."
"That's fair," You nod, not bothering to bite back a grin as she lingers in the doorway of Aaron's office.
"And so help me god," She narrows her eyes at you, once more falling just short of intimidating, "If you try to take some extended-sick-leave time, and I find out you're hiding a pregnancy from me? No amount of frappuccinos in the world will make up for it!"
"Noted," You call out as she leaves, and Aaron's hand comes up to press against the near-indiscernible bulge of your belly before the door even clicks shut.
"She's good." Aaron observes, and you reach for your own non-caffeinated drink with a grin that's hard to drink through.
"Let's tell her about the baby at lunch," You propose, "I think she's more than earned a secret to keep."

hi, i have a request for hotch if that's okay with you :)
when they're on the jet, yn is smiling a lot at her phone so the team starts to tease her because the think that she has a mysterious boyfriend. and she does, but he's sitting right next to her and he's also wondering who's making her smile like that since it's clearly not him
tysm!
Hotch is trying hard to award you your privacy, but your smile makes it difficult. You're actually squared away from him despite sitting in the seat beside him of your own free will, your phone to your chest, a huge smile curved across your cute mouth. 'Cute mouth', Hotch thinks to himself with derision. He's thoroughly whipped for you. It might not work out.
You've been secretive and strange on your phone for an hour now. With nothing left to do but wait for the jet to touch down, you can watch whatever or text whenever you want. Hotch just wishes it wasn't so distracting. Who are you texting? He feels ill.
"Who's that?"
The dam finally breaks. As soon as Morgan asks, Emily pipes up, "Yeah, who is it?" as Rossi laughs and declares, "I know that look. Young Y/N's in love."
You side eye Hotch. "Workplace harassment," you say.
"Who is it?" Hotch asks.
You gawp but laugh at his unprofessional questioning, pressing your phone screen tight to your chest. "Hotch, it's–"
"Your not-so-secret boyfriend? Come on, we all know you have one," Morgan says.
"I know you know, you're like sharks," you say, giving them all a great long look.
For weeks now, you've glowed. This overzealous smiling and laughing is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Your nosy coworkers can't hold back their curiosity any longer. Hotch was stupid enough to think that your secretive dates and nights spent curled in on one another might be the reason behind your new hopped up sprightliness, but apparently not.
"So you admit it!" Emily cheers.
"Maybe. But it's not what's happening on my phone."
"Well, what is it?" Spencer asks.
They've leaned in on you, a circle of eager faces. Your sudden decision to admit you —maybe— have a boyfriend is as much as anyone's gotten out of you in weeks. If anyone could tease the truth from you, of course it's Hotch, and so the team looks to their leader pleadingly.
He's not sure he wants to know. "They won't leave you alone otherwise," he says, hoping that his expression shows his leniency. Your secrets are your own if you want to keep them.
You smile at him. Again, he thinks you have a cute mouth, and that he's biassed but you definitely smile sweeter at him than anyone else. You and Hotch know something the others don't, amusement like light behind your irises. "I'll show you," you say smugly, "and only you, Hotch."
"Typical," Morgan murmurs, sitting back on the couch.
Hotch clenches his sweaty palms beneath the table. "Alright."
You lean in against his shoulder. Your phone turns on, and he's taking deep breaths as you click to your photo app, and then an album labelled with a simple, '<3'.
It's photos of him. Most he knows you took, sitting across from you in dark restaurants or kneeling in your apartment putting together a new set of drawers. Your giggles begin in earnest as you swipe through them to a more recent photograph. You couldn't have taken it more than a week ago, when he'd stayed the night with you by accident, too tired to leave. His face is slack in sleep. He realises it's a video when you click a button and the sound of crinkling fabric plays from your speaker. In the video, you unbutton the tight collar of his shirt, stroking his neck briefly with a loving knuckle. The video moves down to frame his arm, his hand clinging to your other one like a sucker.
Hotch looks up from the video and blinks at you. Your hand on his sleeping neck, the sound of your tired laughter —he can't not smile. "Oh. That's…"
"What did you show him?" Morgan asks, his voice coloured with both amusement and frustration. The team echo his question.
"I can't kiss and tell," you say, still tucked up by his side.
"I think it's best if you don't, L/N," Hotch agrees.
He'd lose all credibility.

Tumblr media
In the bustling chaos of the BAU bullpen, Aaron Hotchner sat at his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration as he sifted through the multitude of case files scattered before him. A usual sight for the unit chief. The harsh fluorescent lights cast stark shadows across his features, accentuating the lines of exhaustion etched into his face by years of chasing monsters in the dark.
You sat by his side, a silent sentinel amidst the whirlwind of activity. Your own workspace dedicated beside him cluttered with documents and crime scene photos. The faint aroma of stale coffee hung in the air as you both delved into the intricate web of clues left behind by the latest serial killer to plague the streets. It was always so easy with him, your husband. The way the two of you were able to bounce ideas off each other was like none seen before.
The tension in the room was palpable, a heavy weight pressing down on everyone present as they grappled with the enormity of the task at hand. Each unsolved case seemed to loom over them like a specter, a constant reminder of the lives lost and the justice yet to be served. Amidst all the usual chaos, Agent Sarah Miller made her presence known. Her arrival heralded by the soft click of her heels against the linoleum floor. She moved with a confidence that bordered on arrogance, her youthful exuberance a stark contrast to the world-weary countenances of her colleagues. She had no idea what she was getting herself into.
Sarah's eyes lingered on Aaron as she sauntered past his open aired desk, a knowing smirk playing at the corners of her lips. She was young, ambitious, and hungry for success. Her gaze fixed on the formidable figure of the BAU's leader like a moth drawn to a flame.
Despite Aaron's cold indifference, she persisted in her attempts at flirtation, undeterred by his lack of response. Her tactics were shamelessly transparent, her words dripping with false sweetness as she sought to capture his attention. Agent Sarah Miller yet again walked past Aaron's desk, her gaze lingering on him for a moment too long before she turned her attention to you. There was a subtle flicker of annoyance in her eyes as she took in your presence, her lips curling into a barely concealed sneer.
"Hey, Hotch," she purred, leaning against the edge of his desk with practiced ease. "You must be tired of staring at all those files. Why don't you take a break and grab a coffee with me?" Her eyes kept looking back to you in brief flashes to gauge your reaction. You decided early on after her brazen attempts that you would give her none. A layer of disgust masked on top of the doe eyes she was attempting to give your husband was meant for you. She was very forward, you had to give her that one.
Aaron's response was polite but firm, his tone devoid of any warmth. "I'm sorry, Agent Miller, but I have work to do," he replied, his eyes never leaving the papers in front of him.
Undeterred, Sarah flashed him a flirtatious smile, her gaze lingering on him expectantly. "Maybe some other time, then," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness before she finally strolled away.
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at her blatant display of interest, the subtle scoff escaping your lips as you returned your focus to the files sprawled across your desk. "Some profiler she is," you muttered under your breath, the sarcasm dripping from your words like venom. It was a small act of defiance, a way to vent the frustration bubbling just beneath the surface as you watched Sarah's failed attempts at seduction.
Your comment earned a small smirk from Aaron, his lips quirking up in amusement as he glanced up from his work. His eyes met yours, a silent acknowledgment passing between you, a shared understanding of the absurdity of the situation. In that fleeting moment, you found solace in the unspoken reassurance that he was not blind to Sarah's antics, nor was he unaffected by them.
As the tension in the room continued to get heavier, you exchanged a knowing glance with Aaron, the unspoken bond between you speaking volumes. It was a silent reminder of the unbreakable connection that bound you together, a tether grounding you amidst the disarray swirling around you. In that moment, you drew strength from the knowledge that no amount of flirtation from the new agent could ever hope to rival the deep-seated love and loyalty that defined your marriage.
But beneath the surface, resentment simmered, fueled by the blatant disrespect for the boundaries of your marriage. Each lingering glance, each flirtatious comment served as a reminder of the fragile line Sarah was treading, unaware of the storm brewing beneath the calm facade. Yet, as frustrating as her antics were, you knew that the true test of your marriage lay not in her misguided advances but in the unwavering trust and devotion you shared with Aaron. A bond that would withstand any challenge thrown your way.
You had to give the girl credit. She certainly didn’t stop. It was not even an hour later that the girl came crawling right back to him. In the dimly lit bullpen of the BAU, the seasoned agents huddled together, their eyes darting furtively around the room as they exchanged knowing glances. Reid, Garcia, Morgan, and Prentiss stood in a tight circle. Their voices hushed as they leaned in conspiratorially.
"So, who's going to crack first?" Garcia whispered, her eyes sparkling mischievously behind her glasses.
Prentiss smirked, crossing her arms over her chest. "My money's on Y/N. She's got that poker face down pat."
Reid nodded in agreement, adjusting his glasses. "And she's got a wicked sense of humor. I don't think she's sweating it."
Just then, Morgan, ever the observant one, interjected with a grin. "You know what, I'm with both of you on this one. Y/N's handling this like a pro. She's probably just waiting for the perfect moment to drop a witty comeback."
The others turned to look at you, noticing your bemused expression as you observed the scene unfolding with a mixture of amusement and annoyance. The new agent, eager to impress, leaned in a little too close to Hotch, her voice dropping to a suggestive whisper. "So, Hotch, any plans for dinner tonight?"
Hotch glanced up from his paperwork, his expression remaining impassive. "Just finishing up some reports, Agent. Nothing planned."
Undeterred, the new agent persisted, fluttering her eyelashes coyly. "Well, if you change your mind, I know this great Italian place down the street."
Hotch merely nodded, returning his attention to the file in front of him. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you, Agent."
Behind his back, the BAU members couldn't contain their laughter, stifling their giggles as they watched the new agent's attempts fall flat. It was clear that Hotch was immune to her charms, his focus unwavering even in the face of relentless flirting.
As Sarah retreated, finally somewhat defeated, the BAU members exchanged triumphant looks, their silent bet settled. Hotch may have been unflappable in the field, but when it came to dodging unwanted advances, he was truly a master of his craft. And you, well, you were just enjoying the show, your amused smile barely masking your annoyance as you watched the scene unfold.
Tumblr media
The breaking point came during a particularly intense case, where the unsub's erratic behavior had everyone on edge. You felt the adrenaline coursing through your veins as you moved cautiously through the dimly lit corridors of an abandoned warehouse, every nerve on high alert.
In the heat of the pursuit, Sarah's impulsive decision shattered the fragile equilibrium you had struggled to maintain with your team. Ignoring protocol and disregarding the safety of the team, she charged ahead recklessly, her actions sending shockwaves rippling through your ranks. Bullets flew past you like angry hornets, the deafening roar of gunfire echoing off the walls as chaos descended upon you.
It happened in the blink of an eye, a split-second decision with far-reaching consequences. A bullet sliced through the air like a deadly whisper, its trajectory aimed straight for your chest. But thanks to the protective barrier of your bulletproof vest, the impact was nothing more than a forceful shove, the fabric absorbing the blow with a sickening thud. The impact knocked the wind out of you, pain searing through your body as you stumbled backward, clutching your chest.
As the adrenaline faded and the reality of what could have been sunk in, fury ignited like a wildfire within you. You rounded on Sarah, your voice a crescendo of anger as you unleashed the pent-up frustration that had been building for weeks. Each word was a dagger aimed straight at her heart. Your tone laced with a venomous ferocity that mirrored the intensity of the emotions raging within you.
Coughing up blood, your vision blurred as you struggled to make sense of what had just happened. Anger surged through you like a tidal wave, drowning out the pain as you staggered to your feet. With a primal roar, you lunged at Sarah, grabbing her by the collar with a strength born of desperation.
"What the fuck was that?" you yelled, louder than you ever had before. And certainly not in front of the team. Your voice raw with fury. Each word was a thunderclap, reverberating through the warehouse like a warning shot. "You could have killed me! Or them! Do you even realize what you've done?"
But Sarah's response was a defiant sneer, her gaze unwavering in the face of your righteous indignation. "I did what needed to be done," she spat, her voice laced with arrogance. "I'm not afraid to take risks to get the job done."
The words were like a slap to the face, a cruel reminder of the recklessness that had nearly cost you everything. With all your rage, you shoved her away, your hands trembling with anger as you struggled to contain the tempest raging within you.
"You're a liability," you growled, your voice a low, dangerous whisper. "And if you ever put my life, their lives,” You pointed to Spencer and Emily behind you, “in danger again, I won't hesitate to take you down myself."
As you stood there, trembling with fury and pain, the rest of the team made their way over. You still hasn’t seen Aaron yet but the rest of them looked on in shock and disbelief. Derek surged forward, his strong arms wrapping around you as he pulled you back from the confrontation. "Easy there Y/N," he said, his voice low and soothing as he tried to calm the storm raging within you. "Cool off."
Emily and JJ exchanged worried glances. Finally, Aaron found you after too many moments of losing it in front of everyone. His eyes widened in alarm as he took in the sight of blood staining your lips, his heart clenching with fear at the sight. "What happened?" he demanded. His usually calm voice was laced with urgency as he reached out to gently touch your arm. His fingers trembled against your skin, his touch a comforting anchor in the swirling chaos of the moment.
Still reeling from the confrontation and the shock of narrowly escaping serious injury, Spencer stepped forward, his voice calm but tinged with urgency. "Aaron, Sarah made a nearly fatal mistake," he said, his words cutting through the tension like a knife. "Her impulsive actions endangered everyone on the team, especially Y/N." You were thankful he was willing to step in because you weren’t quite sure if you had the right words.
Aaron's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenching with barely contained fury as he turned his gaze on Sarah. The air around him crackled with palpable anger, his protective instincts kicking into overdrive. "Is this true?" he demanded, his voice cold and steely as he pinned her with a hard stare.
Sarah shifted uncomfortably under his intense scrutiny, her bravado faltering in the face of his unwavering gaze. "I...I was just trying to apprehend the unsub," she stammered, her voice wavering with uncertainty.
But Aaron's patience had worn thin, his temper flaring like a raging inferno. "You made a reckless decision that put the entire team at risk," he snapped, his voice echoing off the walls of the warehouse. "Until you can prove that you're capable of following protocol and putting the safety of your teammates above all else, you will not be back in the field."
The weight of his words hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the consequences of her actions. Sarah's expression fell, her defiance crumbling under the weight of his judgment. It was a harsh lesson, but one that she would need to learn if she ever hoped to earn back the trust of her colleagues and prove herself worthy of wearing the badge.
As Aaron turned away, his attention returning to you with a renewed sense of protectiveness, you couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the unwavering support of your team leader and husband. But as you tried to catch your breath, a sudden coughing fit wracked your body, drawing Aaron's attention back to you. Concern flashed across his features, his eyes narrowing with worry as he stepped closer, his hand reaching out to steady you.
"Hey sweetheart," he murmured softly, his voice a gentle caress against your ear as he brushed a strand of hair away from your forehead. "Let's get you checked out, alright?"
You attempted to speak, but the coughing fit continued, leaving you gasping for air. So, you shook your head in protest. You were fine and you knew it, but the damn bullet hit you right in the lung leaving you gasping for air. Aaron's worry deepened, his brow furrowing with concern as he knelt down beside you, his hands hovering anxiously over your shoulders.
"Honey, just breathe," he urged, his voice filled with tenderness as he placed a comforting hand on your back. "We'll get you to the hospital, and they'll take care of you. I promise." It wasn’t usual that he dropped those sweet terms of endearment to you in front of the team, but he couldn’t really care. Not when he could’ve lost you.
Despite your protests, Aaron's determination remained steadfast. With gentle insistence, he scooped you up in his arms, cradling you against his chest with a strength born of love and concern. "You're going to the hospital," he declared, his voice unwavering as he carried you towards his SUV. “I’m not taking no for an answer sweetheart."
As Aaron settled into the driver's seat beside you, his eyes flickered with concern as he stole glances, his hand reaching out to brush against yours in a silent gesture of reassurance. But despite his unwavering determination to get you to the hospital, you couldn't help but feel a stubborn sense of resistance bubbling within you.
"I'm fine, Aaron," you insisted, your tone tinged with frustration as you crossed your arms over your chest. "This is incredibly dramatic. You’ve been hit in your gear too."
Aaron's expression softened at your words, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Maybe I am," he admitted with a chuckle. "I also know what it feels like honey. I’d rather be safe than sorry."
You shot him a playful glare, unable to suppress the teasing smile that danced on your lips. He cared for you, truly. Every inch of himself loved you more deeply than even you could have fathomed. You also knew that love bore stubbornness and there was no talking him out of what he knew he had to do. You were just along for the ride now. "You just can't resist playing the hero, can you?" You spoke up after a moment of silence between the two of you.
Aaron chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he glanced over at you. "Guilty as charged," he replied. "Always remind me never to get on your bad side," Aaron quipped, a lighthearted smile playing on his lips as he attempted to alleviate the tension that hung heavy in the air.
You managed a weak laugh trying your hardest to hide the pain radiating from your chest. However, so grateful for his attempt to lighten the mood. "You looked like you were about to take matters into your own hands back there," he teased gently, his voice laced with affection.
The image of you, ready to throw down with the new agent, brought a genuine laugh bubbling up from deep within you this time. "Well, she did have it coming," you admitted with a mischievous grin. "But I guess I'll let you handle the heroics this time."
As the laughter subsided, Aaron's expression turned more serious, a hint of regret flickering in his eyes. "I'm sorry things got so heated," he said softly, his voice tinged with sincerity. "I should have stepped in sooner. I thought she was harmless. Dealt with her type so many times before." He sighed, running a hand through his hair before finding your hand and lacing his fingers within yours.
You squeezed his hand, a warm smile spreading across your face. "It’s not your fault you’re such a silver fox," Tossing him a wink you couldn’t help but to tease him right on back. It’s how you knew everything was going to be just fine. The two of you had dealt with so much worse and come out even stronger, this would be nothing but a minor blip on your journey together.
Aaron laughed at your playful comment, a warmth spreading in his chest at your familiar banter. "Ah, so you're saying my charm is both a blessing and a curse," he retorted with a grin, his gaze softening as he looked at you.
You nodded, a fond smile playing on your lips. "Something like that," you agreed, feeling a surge of gratitude for the ease with which you could navigate even the toughest moments with Aaron by your side.
As the car glided through the streets towards the hospital, a comfortable silence settled between you, punctuated only by the gentle hum of the engine. Despite the events that had unfolded, you found solace in the quiet intimacy of the moment, knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead, you would face them together. With each passing mile, you felt the weight of the day begin to lift from your shoulders, replaced by a sense of reassurance that only Aaron could provide. His unwavering love and support was everything you needed. He guided you through the darkness, illuminating the path forward with hope and determination.
As you arrived at the hospital and Aaron helped you out of the car, you knew that this was just another chapter in your life together. You couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the man beside you, your literal partner in crime, your rock, your everything. Together, you were truly unstoppable.

The day goes by fast for the Bau, the day doesn’t have enough hours before the sun is setting again. They checked out a place today hoping you would be there but instead they found nothing, not even a sign that anyone used to be there. Garcia also isn’t getting anywhere tracking their Ip address, and they haven’t gone live since this morning. Currently the team is sitting around the table eating or more like picking at their dinner as they throw out more ideas.
“We got his face on camera, Garcia has it circulating through all facial recognitional searches” Morgan adds, sighs as he stabs his noodles.
“She won’t find anything, he’s been doing this for years there will be no recognition of him for the past twenty years” Rossi huffs quietly staring at the photo of the unsub on the board.
“Maybe not, but she can put him through her system and make him appear younger then maybe she will get a hit” JJ suggests staring at the wall, her body feeling numb.
“Good idea, when she lands get her straight onto that” Hotch instructs looking over at Morgan.
“Will do” Morgan nods at him.
“When does she land?” Emily asks, glancing over at Morgan who automatically checks his watch.
“In twenty minutes, I should get going. I promise her I’ll be waiting by the gate when she lands” He smiles weakly standing up. No one argues, everyone knows those two come in a package.
“Hey can I come for a ride, I could use the fresh air” JJ looks up at him, feeling exhausted.
“Sure blondie lets go” Morgan smiles a little as they walk out.
~~~
The night goes by with Reid, Rossi and Hotch narrowing down their comfort zone, while Garica and Morgan go through making the unsub appear younger and running him through everything. JJ and Emily, run through their notes of the interview of some of the victims families they talked to today, coming to some conclusions that they wish they never had to. Once it gets too late and the room is filled with nothing but yawns, Hotch finally sends them home, his heart racing at the thought you have been gone for 36 hours. Everyone leaves silently hating the idea of going back to the hotel while you're missing. Once Aaron is alone in his hotel room he sits at the small desk in the corner of the room, pulling out his notebook and a file as he gets back to work, doing his best to distract his mind from the hopelessness look in your eye. You don’t think they are coming for you, no, you don’t think he is coming for you. He is, and he won’t rest until he has you back where you belong. His mind runs back to the night, the night he regrets letting you go. The night he confessed to you, that he enjoyed having you in his life more than a boss should. That he doesn’t normally allow an agent to get this close to him or his kid, and he definitely doesn’t allow his agents to cuddle up to him on his couch watching movies, or kiss him that one night. He also doesn’t allow an agent to push him on cases like you do, he doesn’t allow an agent to bring a case to him like this and get away with using his FBI statutes to get information he’s not entitled to. He doesn’t allow it, so how the hell did he allow himself to let you worm yourself into his heart, and why the hell did he let you leave that night. Aaron doesn’t realise there are tears sliding down his face, hitting his notes until there's a sharp knock on the door. Quickly he pulls himself together, wiping his face as he takes a deep breath steadying his heartbeat as he looks through the peephole. Of course it's Dave he groans to himself, wondering if he could just go to bed and pretend he’s asleep to make him go away.
“Open up Aaron I know you're there” Dave smirks, staring at the door with a knowing look. Ever so slowly Aaron opens the door, his face hard, showing no emotion.
“What's up Dave?” Aaron sighs lightly, acting tired blocking the doorway.
“Don’t what's up me” Dave rolls his eyes as he pushes past him, walking straight in.
“Oh sure come on in” Aaron says sarcastically as he closes the door, he somehow allows his guard down around Dave. Dave moves to the middle of the room then turns around, staring at Aaron, his body stiffens under Dave gaze, crosses his arms in defence.
“What do you want Dave?”
“You want to tell me what's going on with you?” Dave stares at him, his eyes staring a hole into his soul.
“What do you mean, my agent is missing? I'm sorry if I’m a little on edge” Aaron snaps at him, the tears threatening to come back.
“Today you keep referring to him as your agent, you keep refusing to say his name” Dave sighs, noticing the tension threatening to break on Aaron's face.
“Dave” His name is barely above a whisper, it's a warning. “Get out”
“Not until you open up and tell me what's happened between you two” Dave pushes, taking a step forward as he spots a tear escaping down Aaron cheek as he looks away.
“Aaron its me, talk to me”
“I can’t lose him Dave, not after Haley” His voice breaks as he speaks, sitting down on the bed.
~~~
“I invited him to a soccer game of Jack one day” Aaron breaks the silence, his eyes focused on the wall opposite him. Dave is sitting at the desk, watching him quietly, he wishes he could hear this under better circumstances.
“I didn’t think he would come, you know how closed off he is. He had a rough case and I wanted to make sure he was okay during the weekend” Hotch takes a deep breath as he thinks back.
You didn’t want to get out of bed this morning, but you promised Hotch you would go to his son's soccer game with him. Apparently because you have been on the team for over a year and a half now and you still haven’t met his son yet which is a call for concern, apparently. Slowly you dragged yourself out of bed and got ready for the day, driving to the soccer field and stopping for some coffee and um a hot chocolate, because kids like hot chocolate right? You double asked yourself as you drove to the field, earlier than Hotch had told you the game was but he said he would be there early for warm up seeing as he is the couch. You pull up into the car parks, noticing a spare park beside a familiar car so you quickly park before getting out, and making your way through the field finding your boss setting down a bag and some bottles and a kid who seems to be a mini version of him holding a ball laughing beside him.
“Morning” You call out to them, your eyes focused on Hotch as he turns around with a smile growing on his face.
“You're earlier” He points out, walking over to you.
“I know” You smirk softly. “But I brought coffee, and a hot chocolate for the little child”
“Thanks,” Hotch smiles. “Jack, this is (Y/n) my coworker”
“Hi,” Jack mumbles, looking down.
“Hey kid” You smile awkwardly, before picking up the coffee and offering it to Hotch.
“Thank you, you didn’t have to” He smiles warmly as he reaches for it, his smile fades as you jump slightly at his movements.
“Oh it's no problem” You focus your smile to stay put. “Sorry” You quickly apologise, gulping quickly as you turn to Jack as you hand him his drink. “This is for you Jack”
“Woah, it's huge!” Jack exclaims, taking it. “Dad only ever gets me the small one, thank you”
You can’t help but laugh softly. “It's because I’m better than him” You tease.
“That's because I have to deal with the sugar rush later,” Aaron groans, smirking at you.
“They get sugar rush?” You look at him confused, your eyebrows pinching together looking cute according to Aaron.
“They do, you don’t know anything about kids do you” Aaron teases you, laughing as he sees his son struggle to hold the cup without dropping it.
“Oh nothing, I don’t like kids” You shrug, as you watch Jack not realising Aaron is currently staring at you with his eyes full of hope.
After the soccer game, you three went out for ice cream, the day was full of laughter and joy as you got to know the Hotchner boys. The next few weekends the same thing happened, you went to the game, then an afternoon activity with the two sweetest boys. About six months pass by, when an incident with Jack processes to push you and Aaron closer.
You are currently watching Jack's first game of summer soccer, cheering for him from the side lines, a huge smile takes over your face as you watch him. The pride grows in your chest as he scores another goal, glancing over at Aaron by the side lines, the proud dad looks on his face as he claps loudly with the clipboard. The game is close, the team only needs one more goal and the game is theirs. The game goes by quickly with both teams playing well for kids, your heart is pounding when you see Jack got the ball lined up for the goal and the referee is about to call the game, but then he kicks and he gets in just as the game comes to an end. The team all screams and cheers with excitement, running towards their parents to celebrate, except Jack. He’s sprinting towards screaming that he’s won, before he’s jumping at you, wrapping his arms around you. You freeze, your smile falters as he touches you, but then you look down at the small boy in your arms and you smile before wrapping your arms around him, the tension in your chest breaking apart.
“You did amazing kiddo” You smile widely as you hear heavy footsteps approaches, pulling away from Jack as you glance up to meet his father's gaze, a worried look on his face quickly fades to a relieved, happy look.
“They played great” You smile at him, but your smile doesn’t reach your eyes as Jack pulls away, causing Aaron to worry internally.
“They did, you did so great buddy” Aaron looks down at his son, with loving eyes as he ruffles his hair.
Later that night, you three have had a movie night and now Jack is asleep in his bed as you and Aaron watch a less kid friendly movie, while chatting away.
“I’m sorry if Jack made you uncomfortable earlier” Aaron glances at you as the conversation from before dies away, your eyes stay glued on the tv.
“Um when?” You gulp, you know what he’s talking about, but you don’t want to talk about it.
“When he hugged you (Y/n), I know you don’t like physical touch”
“It's fine, It happened and it didn’t suck” You shrug, ignoring the way your body tenses up.
“(Y/n), If you want me to tell him not to do it again I will” Aaron speaks softly, watching the upset and agitated look flash over your face as you glance at him.
“Don’t do that, I don’t mind hugging him. What, am I not allowed to hug people just because I’ve never hugged someone before!” You snap at him, anger and sadness welling up inside you.
“No, I didn’t mean that” Aaron smiles sadly at you, before reaching for your hand that lays on the couch in between you both. Your freeze, your eyes focusing on his hand closely but you don’t pull away. He slowly intertwined his fingers with yours, taking a deep you slide your thumb over his, a small smile pulling at your lips.
“You said you haven’t had a hug before?” Aaron keeps his voice light as he speaks, holding your hand softly as he looks up at you.
“Not since I was young” You talk quietly, looking into his eyes as you speak. “I know I’m not normal Aaron but I’m trying I promise” Your voice almost sounds like you're begging when you speak, your voice wobbles as your eyes water just a little.
“I know you are, I see you and you are doing a great job” Aaron reassures you. Holding back the automatic urge to pull you into a hug and tell you that nothing can hurt you anymore and that you're doing a great job and just how far you have come. But he can’t do that, because you're not ready for the praise nor ready for the way he wants to hold you and even if you are he would break the thin line of professionalism he is trying to keep between you two.
“I am?” Your face lights up a little, a smile tugging at your lips.
“You are, do you remember when you first joined the team?” Aaron smiles as he watches you, the way your eyes slide to the wall as you think back.
“Yeah.. You kept getting mad at me”
“Mad isn’t the right word, I was concerned for you. You barely slept and never ate, you drank more caffeine than Reid and that’s saying something” Aaron jokes lightly, causing you to chuckle softly.
“Okay, but I still do that most weeks”
“Still less than you used to do, and that's an improvement” Aaron squeezes your hand softly, which makes your smile grow just a little. “You also used violence a lot more when arresting an unsub, you don’t do that so much anymore you have more control over your temper” His words sink in slowly, your heart melting as your eyes meet his, allowing his sweet words to break your walls down.
“That one is hard, anger and violence is all I knew growing up” Your words are barely above a whisper as you admit that, squeezing his hand a little.
“That's okay, because you are still young and you are still learning” He smiles as his thumb brushes over your hand. “Also back then you would never let me hold your hand, or even hug my son”
“Maybe it's more because you two mean something to me rather than something else” You gulp as you admit your feelings.
“Well you are welcome here whenever you like” Aaron smiles as he looks at you, his eyes filled with love as he stares into your own. He feels himself falling for you, he knows it's wrong but right now Aaron doesn’t care, because he’s never seen anyone with such beautiful eyes before.
“Can.. Can you hug me.. I want to try it” You push the words out of your throat as the nerves start to get involved. Aaron smiles softly, his arms wrapping around you, pulling you down and into his chest. You take a deep breath, half laying down in his arms, closing your eyes as you focus on his heart beat, and the warmth his arm produces.
~~~
“You two got really close?” Dave pulls Aaron back to the present.
“Six months Dave… That night brought us even closer but six months it stayed like that” Aaron voice breaks as a tear slides down his hands shaking. “And then he pulled away, something was going on but he refused to tell me what and after one night.. That night he.. He kissed me” Aaron takes a sharp breath as that memory invades his mind the way you cupped his face as you ask him sweetly before your lips are capturing his.
“What happened?” Dave watched him concernedly, his eyes focused on Aaron's body language.
“He fell asleep in my arms, and the next morning he was gone, I tried to talk to him at work and he told me that he had to refocus on work, he didn’t have time for friends, I let him go Dave, I knew something was wrong but I also knew that he’s not right, he doesn't understand relationships or love, now I know why” Aaron looks up at Dave, his heart breaking.
“This isn’t your fault Aaron” Dave reaches out, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“I know Dave but–” Before Aaron could finish there's an urgent knock on the door pulling the two mens attention away. As soon as the door opens Garcia and Morgan are walking in urgent looks plastered over their faces, both carrying their laptops.
“They are going live” Morgan breaks the silence, before glancing at Hotch who is quickly drying his face., jumping to his feet quickly. All four of them gather around the laptop where the loading screens disappear and your bloody face fills the screen making Aarons insides screaming.
~~~
You are left alone for hours after being tortured, they only stopped after you screamed out the name they branded you with. You pass out at one point, your body and mind begging for a break, and against the hardest you try you black out. A sharp pain flies across your face, bringing you back to the hell you're in. Blinking rapidly while your eyes adjust to the bright light shining down at you, your eyes finally adjust landing on the man in front of you.
“Ready for round two Jupiter?” He chuckles at you, his grin is one that will forever haunt your nightmares.
“Why don’t you untie me and I’ll show you just how ready I am” You glare up at him, anger and tiredness sitting in your chest. He grabs your chin pinching it hard between his thumb and pointer finger, his eyes icy cold as he stares into you.
“Oh that's the plan, we’re going old school” A sickening feeling fills your stomach as his grin grows.
“No, not again” You spit at him, fear filling you knowing that's their plan to break you.
“Bring him out” He yells out, letting your chin go as the door on the other side of the room swings open, your stomach drops. She walks in, followed by a younger boy who seems to be in his mid teens.
“He’s too young no” You shake your head vigorously, your heart pounding. He looks so strong, but you know you're stronger even in your current state you could beat him.
“You killed people when you were younger than him” He laughs. “Hell you are our youngest killer after all”
“Shut up” You snarl at him, your eyes flickering towards the video camera.
“Just enjoy the fight, let yourself remember the joy you used to feel” He smirks as he grabs the camera and lights moving them out of the pool before he climbs out.
“Hey, aren’t you going to untie me then” You glare up at him, your eyes glace at the kid as he approaches, his eyes are dead but focused on you. To him you aren’t a person just a chore for the day, he just needs to get you over with so he can have dinner and go to sleep.
“He will do it” He smirks at you, before the boy jumps into the pool.
“Julian, remember the rules” Ma’am calls to the boy, her eyes flickering to yours. Her’s are filled with excitement, she can’t wait to see the next show.
“Yes Ma’am” He nods, before approaching you, untying you quickly before backing up to his corner.
“When
I say start you two better give everyone a good show my lovies” She sings out to you two before giggling sickly, holding the camera zooming in on you as you stand up your eyes trained on the boy. You won’t attack him, just keep him busy until he gives up.
“Three, two one, go” Her smirk darkness as the boy lunges at you.
~~~
He’s a lot stronger than you thought he was, after a few rounds of dodging and making him chase you around the pool, he’s managed to land a few strong punches on you. Eventually he gets you down, his fist colliding with your face too much for you to think straight and soon instinct takes over. Your legs wrap around his waist, flipping you both over as you manage to get a few hits on him, he stops moving as you put pressure over his throat. A soft laugh escapes you as he starts relaxing under you, his eyes soften as fear invades them as he struggles underneath you.
“Please don’t” He coughs his words out, but they aren’t enough to stop you.
“That’s it Jupiter finish him” She cheers for you, your stomach drops as her voice sets in. Shaking your head as you eyes meet him, you quickly let his throat go as he stops struggling under you.
“That's not my name” You growl glancing at her, before looking at the scared boy under you. “Take a deep breath kid, you're okay now” You speak softly, guilt eating at you. He nods quickly, taking deep breaths as you climb off him, holding out a hand for him, pulling him up to his feet. Sliding his arm over your shoulder as he uses you for support, you glare up at the two viewers.
“You can try as much as you like, you're not breaking me” You breathe heavily as you try to catch your breath. You are pretty sure your ribs are broken along with your nose, more blood drips down your face.
“Bullshit” He snarls out as he jumps into the pool with you, storming over.
“Can’t break me” You smirk at him just a little.
“You won that fight, and winners here only win one way” He glares murderously at you, before you have time to process anything he lunges at Julian. A sharp howl leaves the young boy's mouth, your eyes widen as he pulls away, blood dripping from the knife in his hand.
“No!” You scream, your hand flies toward Julian side, where the stab wound is, pressing against the bleeding as you lay him down.
“You won, deal with it” He laughs bitterly as they walk out, leaving you two alone.
You hold the tears back as you press against the wound, looking into the young boy's frightened eyes.
“It's.. its going to be okay kid” You try to pull yourself together, as the boy stares up at you.
“It's okay” He coughs out weakly. “They can’t hurt me now”
“That's right they can’t” You whimper, a tear sliding down as the light in his eyes start to fade.
“My sister here, she's beside you” His words are barely above a whisper now, goosebumps make your arms tingle.
“Go with her kiddo, be safe now” Tears slide down as his chest stops breathing and you can’t move. Eventually you pull your hands off him, and collapse onto your back sobs racking through your body. That should be you, no one is even looking for you, this is your fault.
~~~
The team sits in silence as the live ends, Garcia keyboard is the only sound that fills the room. Tears are sliding down almost everyone's face, guilt, fear and anger fills everyone. The rest of the team had come and joined the other four earlier on, everyone had to watch your fight in silence, their hearts breaking at your screaming. The way you fell to your knees trying to keep the boy alive, then it ended, and no one knows how to proceed.
“Penelope, do you have a location?” It's Dave that breaks the silence, his eyes landing on her. Her body is shaking as she cries but she carries on typing on her laptop.
“No, but.. But I’ve got it narrowed down, and I tapped into their viewers, maybe we can’t get something off that” Her voice is shaky as she tries to push through it.
“Baby girl” Derek gently takes her hand, worried about her shaking.
“I.. I’m sorry” She sobs, falling into Derek's chest who holds her closely, his own tears sliding down.
“Everyone take five minutes, then back to the precinct” Aaron orders, his eyes still focused on the screen, his heart falling apart. In a quick minute JJ and Reid are running out of the room, needing time to themselves.
Everyone knew the timeline had been cut shorter, if they make you fight again, Aaron knows you will give yourself up, he can’t let you do that.

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Walking through the threshold into your shared home, Aaron sets his briefcase down and tosses his keys into the bowl by the door. Shrugging off his jacket, he walks into the kitchen and looks at the clock.
10:00PM
He sighs, turns on the coffee pot, and silently hopes he can finish the reports before you realize he isn’t in bed yet.
While the coffee is brewing, he grabs his briefcase and retreats into his office, throwing his jacket over the chair. Taking the case files out, he sorts through them. One of them in particular made even Jeffrey Dahmer look tame - three women, brutally raped and tortured in Chicago with body parts that were sawed off antimortem and thrown into the Chicago River. Flipping through the file, Aaron realizes how thankful he is that you don’t have to see the gruesome and disturbing parts of his world.
It's the harsh beeping of the coffee pot that finally pulls him out of his thoughts. He sits down the file, pads into the kitchen, and reaches for a coffee cup out of the cabinet.
He reaches too fast, hand brushing up against the scalding pot and he yelps, jerking back as his brows furrow further together.
He doesn’t see you come out of the bedroom at the sound of his scream, and as you go to ask him what’s wrong, he puts his hand on his forehead and scoffs. “Motherfucker, can you not?,” he asks, sending a deep glare in the coffee pot's direction.
Still standing behind him, you can’t help but laugh, and Aaron raises his eyebrows and turns around.
“How long have you been standing there?” he asks, crossing his arms and running his pointer finger and thumb over each other.
Still giggling, you walk towards him and wrap your arms around his torso. “Long enough to hear you shit talk an inanimate object.”
Feeling of your warm body flush with his, he wraps his arms around you, rubbing circles on your back. “I’ve had a long day,” he mumbles into your hair. “I couldn’t help it. What was so funny? That stupid thing burned me.”
Raising your chin to his chest, you look up at him with a grin. He looks so boyish like this - his jacket is shed, the tie he once had in pristine condition is now loose and wrinkled around his neck, there’s a slight pout on his face from you making fun of him, and his hair is tousled like he had been running his fingers through it - he looked cute.
“It’s funny because out of all the things you could curse at, you chose a coffee pot,” you answer, raising up and giving him a soft kiss. “Honey, you go to work everyday saving lives and making sure the scum of the earth pay for what they do, even if that means you get hurt. I’ve seen you come home some days looking like you’ve been hit by a bus,”
He laughs, and leans down to kiss your forehead.
“You act like it’s nothing and take it in stride. Hell, Aaron you’ve been shot at, blown up, stabbed,” you emphasize the last word, feeling his grip become tighter around your body. “… and the coffee pot is what set you off? Of all things?”
He shrugs, pulls you tighter and buries his nose in your hair, kissing your scalp, “It was a reflex… and I might be a little tired.”
“How about instead of doing paperwork, you come to bed with me and I’ll get you out of that suit and into some comfy pajamas, hmm?,” you whisper into his shirt.
He puts his head into your neck and growls, nipping at your throat while his hands move down your waist, grabbing your ass. “Mmm my sexy wife is going to undress me, huh?,” he mumbles, taking your earlobe between his teeth, “I like the sound of that.”

When he asks you to stand next to him at his wedding as his best person, there isn’t a universe where you can say no. Funnily enough, it’s almost 5 years to the day that’s become the most dreaded of your life. The day you realized how deeply you felt for him. It isn't on purpose but when that day rolls around it's a known bad day, like an omen. He’d asked you just a few hours after he asked Haley to marry him on a whim. Your entire world had been tilted since you’d fallen in love with him but now it's turned upside down.
You get to wear a special dress. Haley helps you pick it, she has an impeccable taste that you trust. It's gorgeous, classic with a little bit of sparkle. For just a moment as you get dressed in it on the big day, you wonder how he’ll feel about seeing you in it. Usually, you don't let yourself fall into daydreaming about how things could be, it helps keep your feelings locked up. They’re almost a completely separate entity at this point.
They don’t feel like that when you walk down the aisle, gripping the bouquet of roses, eucalyptus, and baby’s breath tight. He looks as handsome as ever and young, looking like a love sprung, recent college graduate that he is.
When you join him up at the altar he turns to you, grasping your hand, “Thank you for being here with me.”
“Of course, you know I wouldn’t miss it.”
If you were in your right mind, your knees would buckle as you watch her walk down the aisle. But, you’ve prepared yourself for this day. Coached and coached and coached yourself into the delusion that you can handle this. You can watch him tie himself to her in this way, pledge himself to her, and whatever family they’ll build together. You can and you do.
He pulls you onto the dance floor later that night and you can’t help but smile at how happy he is. If either of you is being honest, he rarely lets himself be truly happy. But as the two of you glide around the dance floor you don't see any hints of his perpetual sadness in his deep brown eyes. When you ask him about it he says he can't feel it either.
That makes it all worth it to you. You know better than anyone else what his past holds and how it’s kept him from believing in himself and his deserved happiness. You can’t think of a better reason to resign to your fate and you start to scour the crowd for the guy Haley talks about setting you up with.
Once you’re home at an indecent hour, you peel yourself out of the dress and put it in a box you label goodwill. You never want to see it again.

Sink or Swim || Bonus Blurb
Tumblr media
Hi besties long time no talk <3 This little blurb fits into September!
series masterlist
contains: discussion of sickness and doctors/medical appointments, mention of food
wordcount: 1.5k
When you’d first started with the BAU, a three-day case nearly felt like a vacation. In and out of a place before the work week was done? It was like you barely even left, your routines completely unaltered. If the timing was right you wouldn’t even miss a workout class.
Your life is so, so different now. With kids to think about, you felt every hour you spent at work after 5pm in your bones. The kids don’t think anything of it, which usually helps to soothe you, but when Bridgette called you on the second night and said that Lexie had been fussy and in pain since she finished her course of antibiotics right before you left, the weight of every hour since had felt like torture. By the time the jet touched down at Quantico, your skin was crawling. It was around 7; you knew that most of the team would stick around to finish their after-action reports, and Aaron would likely stay even later to review them, but you just couldn’t take it anymore.  After settling the things at your desk, you walked up to Aaron’s office, entering and closing the door behind you without knocking.
“Babe?”
“Yeah,” he answers without looking up at you— he’s not trying to be dismissive, just focused on the task at hand.
“D’you think it would be okay if I went home? I just keep thinking about Bridgette and Lexie cooped up these past couple days– it seems like maybe the antibiotics didn’t work, and I’ve been torn up thinking about her in pain,” you say, feeling a little silly. You know you don’t need to explain it to your partner, but you feel like you owe your boss an explanation. “I can bring my after-action report home, or I can get it done first thing tomorrow—”
“First thing tomorrow is fine,” he says, looking up at you now, but he’s still all business. He rises from his chair when he makes eye contact with you and crosses the room to wrap his arms around you.
“She’s okay, hon. She’s sick, but she’s okay. The first time Jack caught something while I was away I was a mess.”
“So it gets better?” You sniffle into his chest, and you feel his half-chuckle more than you hear it.
“Not really, no. You just get better at managing it,” he tells you, dropping a kiss to the crown of your head. “Go home to our girl, she needs you.”
“Love you,” you tell him.
“Love you too,” he says. “I won’t stay too late here.”
“See you at home,” you say before you leave his office, quickly gathering up your things and leaving Quantico behind for the night.
You can hear Lexie’s cries through the front door before you’ve even fished your keys out of your purse and you physically crumple. Your poor baby. You rush in, and Bridgette’s face washes over in relief when she sees you.
“Oh, honey,” you say, and you’re not sure which one of them you’re talking to. Alexis is making her displeasure clear, but Bridgette looks a lot worse for the wear. You cross the threshold and take the baby from her.
“I was going to take her to the doctor tomorrow morning, I made an appointment. She had Tylenol about two hours ago, I’ve been doing my best to keep her comfortable but—”
“Honey, relax,” you tell her soothingly. “She’s sick. Her discomfort is not a personal failure,” you remind her, parroting a phrase Aaron’s said to you in your less confident moments. Lexie quiets at the sound of your voice and the sensation of being in your arms, although her face is still twisted up in pain. It just about breaks your heart.
“Thank you,” Bridgette smiles. “Can I help you with anything else?”
“God, no. You’ve been here for days. Feel free to grab something to eat before you go; I’m sure this one has kept you occupied all night, but you’re off the clock. I’ll plan to take her to the doctor in the morning and you can get some sleep. Jack was okay for you?”
“He was an angel as always. I left him in bed, told him he could finish the chapter he was reading and that he should shut his light off and go to bed after that.”
“Thank you,” you smile. “We could not do this without you, truly.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she smiles back, grabbing her things and leaving you alone.
It’s not the first time you’ve been solo with the kids, not by a longshot, but you’re a little intimidated, and thoroughly exhausted from a tiring case. Lexie still in your arms, you head to Jack’s room, finding him asleep with the lights on and his book splayed on his chest. You smile fondly at him, gently maneuvering the bookmark into the book and the book onto the nightstand with one hand before switching off the light.
“Alright sweetie. Do you think mama can get changed into her pajamas?” You ask Lexie in a little hush as you bring her into yours and Aaron’s bedroom, placing her on the mattress briefly as you reach for more comfortable clothes. Lexie makes her displeasure known immediately, squawking out a cry.
“Oh, Lexie-loo, I’m sorry,” you coo. “I know you don’t feel good,” you say, reaching out to place one hand on her stomach as you use the other to shimmy out of your work pants and into a pair of pajama shorts. Your touch calms her, but only having one hand doesn’t exactly make undressing easy. You manage to change with minimal incident, scooping Lexie back up as soon as you’re done.
“You’re tired, my baby. So, so tired,” you say, more to yourself than to her, as you bring her into her dark nursery and settle into the rocker. “Shhh, shhh,” you attempt to soothe her to sleep. She fights it every step of the way, stubborn girl, but her droopy eyelids win out eventually– you rise gingerly, attempting to transfer her to the crib, but she senses the loss of you in sleep and lets out a renewed, piercing cry. You’re overwhelmed and overstimulated, and willing Aaron to come home by the sheer force of your mind.
“I know, sweet girl,” you say to her, leaning your body over the crib so that you can reach in and rub her back. “It’s okay, my girl, just rest,” you tell her, continuing to rub circles over her soft skin. “Shh, shhh,” you comfort her, even after she stops crying. She’s not asleep yet, you’re sure of it. You’ll just have to rub her back a few minutes longer.
The house is quiet when Aaron makes it home later that evening, but the lights in the kitchen and the living room are still on, which is unusual. He takes his usual route through the apartment, setting the alarm and checking on Jack, who was sleeping peacefully. Lexie’s room is next, and he’s surprised to find you there, bent at the waist and halfway in the crib, sleeping as soundly as the baby. He smiles a little, coming up behind you and placing a hand on your back, where he was certain there would be soreness tomorrow morning.
“Honey,” he whispers.
You wake with a jolt. “What?” You whisper out urgently.
“You fell asleep with the baby,” he orients you.
“Oh, sorry,” you squint against the sliver of light from the hallway.
“It’s fine, angel. Is she okay?” He asks.
“Bridgette made an appointment for her. It's her ear, still, but she’s grabbing at the other one now.”
“The infection probably spread before the antibiotics kicked in,” Aaron tuts.
“We should get out of here before we wake her.” You say, stumbling towards the door. Aaron just chuckles, reaching out to stabilize you with a hand at your waist.
“How long was I like that?” You ask him once you’re back in your own bedroom.
“Not sure. I left work about an hour and half after you did.”
“Need a sick day,” you muttered into your pillow, but Aaron’s able to make it out. “I told Bridgette I’d take her. I think the past couple days were tough.”
“She’s good to us,” Aaron says.
“Our baby’s in pain,” you frown.
“Her mom’s home, so that helps,” Aaron reminds you. “She fell asleep in her mom’s arms, and she’ll see the doctor in the morning. The best thing we can do for her right now is make sure she has rested parents in the morning,” he says as he hurriedly changes into his own pajamas so he can join you in bed, clicking off the light before he does so.
“G’night, Aaron. Love you.”
“Love you.”

I LOVE the idea of protective Hotch constantly having an eye out for younger bau!agent who’s literally sunshine personified and the complete opposite of him!! Do u think u could write something along the lines of that—maybe him protecting her from something or just their dynamic?
i also love protective hotch!!! tysm for the request i hope u like it baby :D | 1k of fluff, tw for a small burn!
You’d been surprised when you got a job at the BAU. You didn’t have that much faith in yourself at first. Not to say you don’t believe in your skills, but it’s a widely known part of the bureau. A lot of people wanted the job.
And then, there’s Agent Hotchner, unit chief and intimidating though you’re sure he doesn’t mean to be. You were insanely nervous at the beginning.
That was before you started, before the team welcomed you as the new media liaison after Agent Jareau became a profiler. You met Garcia and her collection of fun high heels, Reid and his never ending supply of facts, and you sort of fit right in.
Hotch became much less intimidating. A kind man who cares so deeply for his team that you couldn’t help but like him the way you do. Not to mention the dynamic that built between the two of you.
The small things he does for you that are impossible to ignore. A hand covering the edge of your desk to protect your head when you were searching underneath it for a dropped paper clip, the way he physically places himself between you and danger if he ever gets the chance.
He’s always there, protecting you in ways both big and little, and you enjoy it more than you should.
It’s even brighter on nights like tonight. Drinks and snacks at Penelope’s after a tough case. Nights when you get to call him Aaron instead of Hotch, when he smiles and laughs freely without restraint.
The beep of the oven cuts off yours and Garcia’s conversation, and when she shifts to take care of it, you stop her, “I got it! You’re already hosting, just relax a little.”
“Thank you,” she smiles, squeezing your arm as you walk by.
The smell of food in the oven hits your nose as you walk into the kitchen, humming along to whatever song spills through the speakers.
You pull the oven open, reaching in without thinking and touching the pan with your bare hand. You drop it quickly, metal clanking as it falls back onto the rack in the oven.
“Shit!” You say it loudly, and then, even louder, addressing the team in the next room, “I’m okay!”
They all laugh a little at your reassurance, and then, like they know he wouldn’t let anyone else check on you before him, pretty much every set of eyes in the room lands on Hotch.
He shakes his head and heads to the kitchen, because he would’ve gone either way.
“You okay?” He asks, finding you with an oven mitt on your non-burnt hand, reaching into the oven, and your burnt hand shaking by your side.
“Oh!” You set the pan of nachos on top of the stove and slip off the mitt, turning off the oven and looking at Hotch. “I forgot oven mitts were a thing for a second there. Burnt my hand, I think.”
He’s on you in a second, his hands gently grasping your injured arm, pushing back your sleeve and guiding you over to the sink. His hold is light, never bruising even though you know he has the strength to do so.
It’s the kiss of sunlight on skin.
Aaron turns on the sink, places his fingers under the water to make sure the temperature’s okay before guiding your hand under the stream.
“You still took out the nachos first?” He asks, even when he knows that’s what you’d do, because of course you’re worrying about everyone else before yourself.
“I didn’t want them to burn.”
You’re trying to be brave, though your hand hurts so much there are tears misting your eyes. You’re bouncing on your feet a little to try and deal with the pain.
“How bad does it hurt?” Hotch checks.
Aaron’s felt this sort of protectiveness over you ever since you started. A little younger than him, this ball of light that’s come bursting into his life. You’re always the positive one, even in the darkest situations and he can’t help but want to shield you to keep it that way.
There’s this thing in his chest that tugs and tugs when you’re around, that makes him stand next to you in any room, in front of you in darkness.
“It’s okay,” you say, though your voice cracks a little. “I’m sure you’ve seen much worse, Hotch.”
“Aaron,” he reminds you gently, “and you don’t have to pretend. It’s alright if it hurts, I just wanna help.”
The sink running mingles with the music coming from the next room, the background noise to your moment with him.
“You could bring the nachos out? I told Garcia I would, but we see how that turned out.”
“Okay, I'll bring them out.”
“Don’t forget oven mitts!”
He huffs with a smile, somehow always surprised with how easily you can turn something around. A smile on your face even with tears shining in your eyes and a hand that’s surely stinging.
Aaron carries the tray of nachos and drops them off, then turns to Penelope, “you have a first aid kit?”
“Oh my gosh! Yeah, bathroom cabinet, I can grab it.”
“It’s alright, Garcia. I’ll get it.”
“Is everything okay?”
“Don’t worry. Nothing major, I’m taking care of it.”
He grabs the first aid kit and heads back to the kitchen where you’re still holding your hand under the stream of water.
“Okay,” Aaron sets the kit down on the counter, opening it and then turning off the tap. “Let me see, honey.”
The word melts into you, sticky sweet, and you hold your hand towards him, palm up.
He starts by drying your hand with a piece of paper towel, pressing your skin lightly. His other hand is under yours, his palm against the back of your hand a painkiller in itself.
You hiss when he hits a sensitive spot, and he’s quick to apologize, his voice low and quiet. “Sorry. I’m sorry. Almost done.”
“It’s okay, Aaron. It's not your fault I thought I was heat-proof.”
“You’re cute.”
A smile spreads over your face, your head tilted down to stare and his hands around yours. You watch him spread some Polysporin over your burn, his fingertips featherlight over your skin, soft apologies leaving him every time you flinch a little.
By the time he’s done, the first aid kit shut on the counter, you’ve both forgotten about the rest of the team in the next room. Aaron’s happy to bask in your sunshine.
