Can't stop thinking about the episodes the winchesters childhood is shown to us and their development.
1×18 "something wicked" - he prepares dinner for Sam. Not something a nine year should do alone in a motel in the middle of nowhere. So he's not a kid, but also not an adult, not quite. Though he cooks, he still hid some food for himself. That is the "big sign" of dean not ready to mature yet. Not ready to be Sam's everything.
Yet with Sam they take it to a different direction, almost in attempt to compare how unfair their treatment from John is. While he let Sam watch TV, in the other room he gives dean a shotgun and repeat their mantra: keep Sammy safe, shoot first ask questions later. Sam eats the cereal, dean is never seen eating. Always on guard, never a kid. And at the end, of course, John huged Sam and blocked his ears so he wouldn't hear him... yelling at his other son.
3×18 "a very supernatural Christmas" - flashbacks to point out Sam's innocence is gone. He is nine and no longer a child. But the episode also brings out dean's most memorable trait with Sam- protecting him from all harm. He tries his best to cover up after John, stays awake for the whole time, not missing for more than a few minutes. And by accepting the amulet Sam originally wanted to give to John, dean kinda accepted his role as a mother, father, brother, ect.
Sam in these flashbacks having his first moment of distrust in the thing they should always trust - family. "All we got is each other", "all I have is you boys," but I don't remember the exact quote. Sam's already having a hard time believing anything his family told him, and that episode really helped me knowing his difficulty better. He wasn't freaked out, like most people - he was sad, frustrated, angry. He hates to be lied to.
Really considering keep this going with all the flashbacks episodes.
