What would happen if their mate died/was killed:
Not including Ysabeau, Miriam and Fernando as they’ve already lost their mate ❤️ but I’m including ocs for Baldwin, Gallowglass and Hancock 🥰
Tumblr media
Matthew: He would let the world burn to find whoever killed Diana. And he’d make it hurt, getting his revenge. There’s nowhere her killer can hide. Even if the death was accidental. Matthew wouldn’t care, all he’d care about would be to find and end the person, his blood rage taking over his entire mind, fogging any sort of consciousness or better judgement. And at the end he might want to join her.
Diana: If Matthew was killed, you’d better pray you can fight Diana. Seeing what she did to Benjamin, she wouldn’t spare you, whether or not she’ll make it hurt depends though. You might get lucky and she’ll just kill you, like with Benjamin—or she’ll drag it out.
Baldwin: There’s no place on heaven or earth in which you’ll be saved. This man is skilled in killing, and in strategizing said killing. He will kill first and grieve second.
Nora (oc): If you wonder how Philippe suffered, you should stay away from Baldwin as long as Nora is in his life. Should he die, you’d wish your own end would come swiftly. She will make it hurt, but wouldn’t kill you, just break you, bit by bit, until there’s nothing left.
Delphie (oc): She will call on Zeus, Hades and any God or Goddess who would listen, begging for Baldwin to be returned. When that doesn’t work, she’ll want revenge. And it will be painful for the ones at fault. At the end they would want it to just be over with.
Minerva (oc): She’s lost a husband before. But loosing Baldwin might be what actually kills her. She wouldn’t be able to go through the loss again. Whether it was back in their own time, or during present times, she would follow him into death without a second thought.
Gallowglass: This man might be a big teddy bear, but should you cross him, you’d better be good at hiding. And if you kill his mate — Oh BOI! This man never really gets mad, but he will quickly let his anger take control, and kill you in an instant, no hesitation.
Lyra (Julie’s oc): She wouldn’t be able to process it, the grief hitting her harder than either of her parent’s death (might have to do with her parents death being self-inflicted, even if they were accidental). If Gallowglass gets killed, she would never recover, bringing the grief with her to the grave. No flowers will ever grow again from her magic, depending on her strength, she might even stop practicing magic all together.
Catriona (oc): She would be inconsolable, turning to her dad and Fernando for support and guidance, unsure what to do, wishing she could get him back. She’ll hit the depressed part of grief pretty fast, and has to get help doing the most basic things.
Marcus: Our token healer would switch to a cold blooded killer should his mate get killed. He definitely protects those he loves, to the very end. Don’t cross him. He knows ways to kill and make it look like an accident, a suicide or in some cases, the body will never be found, just a note stating said person had run away to be with someone.
Phoebe: If it’s human!Phoebe, she’d bargain, trying to sacrifice herself so he could live. If it’s vampire!Phoebe, specifically newly turned Phoebe, you should be careful, she’ll drain you before you can stop to think.
Hancock: Like Gallowglass, Davy is a gentle giant, but cross him and it would be the last thing you do. If you kill his mate he’ll let you bleed, feeding, stopping, feeding again, to drag it out until you die from blood loss.
Annie (kinda oc): She’ll go through all five stages of grief. Not sure what to do to change the outcome. She wants justice, sure, but doesn’t think it’s right to sink to the killer’s level by killing them. Someone else would probably do the killing in her honor.
Valeria (oc): She’s not nicknamed the Bloody Mary of Barbados for no reason. Wrong her and you’ll be dead within hours, and that’s a promise. You think her maker was bad, Val learnt from the worst, watching the ways Louisa made others suffer. She’ll make it painful, and dragged out.
Patience (kinda oc): Patience definitely does not live up to her name. If you cross her she will not be patience with you. She’ll have your head and/or blood before you have a second to think. She might not have blood rage, but she does have some underlying anger issues that would have come both from her father’s years of abuse while they was human, and from watching her family suffer after Matthew and Juliette killed most of her nieces and nephews. Kill her mate, and you’ll be 6ft below in no time.
Ransome: This man might look calm, and scarily so. He’s already lost so much from his grandfather and Juliette paying New Orleans a visit. So should you take out his mate/life partner, you better write your will and get your affairs in order, because judgement day is close.
Jaqueline (kinda oc): She’s a kind, soft spirit. That being said, she’s got a unique gift only a limited amount of vampires have, that and a very close friendship to some of the strongest witches and vampires in New Orleans. Jackie might not be the one to kill the ones who killed her mate, but if you cross her, you’d wish she was the one delivering the blow.
Benoit (Julie’s oc): Ben is very much his father’s son. Born, raised and reborn a soldier, he’s a skilled fighter and killer. Should you have the misfortune of killing his mate, you might find yourself in an old, abandoned castle real fast, with some medieval torture methods waiting for you. Like Baldwin, Benoit will kill you first and then grieve second, heck, even join her in death if he can.
Amelia (Julie’s oc): Amelia has a heart of gold, she would never hurt anyone. She’d go through the five stages of grief, but instead of acceptance, she’d join her mate in the afterlife, knowing without him there’s no sense in going on with life. He’s her whole world, and as she can’t avenge his death, she’ll join him instead. That being said though, if she looses her mate you better run—Miyako is not as forgiving as her sister-in-law.
Verin: It’s inevitable that he will die. Ernst isn’t exactly getting younger. But should his death be unexpected, or rushed…if Ernst is robbed of his end, Verin will tear the person who did it into pieces.
Ernst: He thinks the world of his never aging wife. Should she meet the end, especially in his old age, he wouldn’t be far behind in joining her. The grief would be too hard on his heart, after all he’s loved her for years.
Pierre: His heart would simply break, shattering into a milion pieces. In simple terms, his life would be over, he’d leave Sept Tours, and the de Clermont family, unsure of what to do with himself. Pierre loves with his entire being. He thinks the world of his mate, and without her, to him life has no more meaning. He wouldn’t get revenge though, that would be all Gallowglass and Jack’s doing. His «sons» would do it for him knowing he wouldn’t hurt anyone (unless for feeding) because it’s not what his wife would’ve wanted.
Hyacinth: Being a somewhat «public» figure, Hyacinth know’s she can’t kill his killer, not that she would’ve know how to. She would lock herself away, grieving until she had no more tears to spill, and then she would just lay there, wasting away until she can be with her love again. Like with Pierre, someone else would get revenge for her, but would make sure it wouldn’t come back to hurt her or her family’s reputation. It would either be Jack and Gallowglass or Matthew, heck even Francoise, the older woman adores Hyacinth.

A Matter of Blood
OC Halloween Challenge 2023
Day Three: Born In The Wrong Century
Movies depend on a lot of things, but time and place helps create the ominous feel for it. Like Crimson Peak that belongs to the revival gothic period of 1880s or Jason Voorhees waking up on a spaceship in the year of 2455, give your character(s) a new decade to explore and even monsters to face.
Surrounded by vampires who have lived through so many different times, there’s not really a time that Chizzy, Alina and Monty would want to go back to themselves – and because of Diana, the adventure would be fully possible if they so wished. That being said, even going back to the roaring 20s would show differences for them.
Chizzy would still be living in America, hearing stories of the War in Europe and part of her wondering if they couldn’t do something to help with it all, but also stress baking an awful lot. She’d never cross paths with Monty and Alina, so there’d be nobody to rein in her anxieties as much as the former does.
Alina would probably cross paths with Marcus when sneaking in to help with a fight that she has no right to be a part of. Her stubbornness, and his realisation of it, would probably be the only thing that stops him from dragging her away from the battlefield because it would only cause more problems for people. His concern for her would be obvious to the likes of Sooty, but still it is something she wouldn’t notice.
Monty would be in battle beside them, gently teasing his best friend about the woman he is now looking out for, along with trying to keep the secret of Creatures. Monty would also probably get into a lot of trouble for flirting and telling too many jokes when they need to be serious.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

Part Fourty-Seven
Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century
Also on AO3
Martin could not be certain exactly how old his daughter had been when he found her; she was small, which made things more difficult, but his best guess set her age at around six months.
Yvette was lying on her stomach in front of a mirror hanging low against the wall of the office. Martin had made it himself in Venice thirteen years before, when he'd been mucking about with a new technique. Instead of using the usual method of blowing bubbles, he'd figured out that blowing glass cylinders and unrolling them was much less time-consuming, and resulted in fewer imperfections. Glass mirrors could be warped quite badly if poorly-made; there was a reason why most people prefered to use polished metal.
Yvette was big and growing bigger, her now-brown eyes matching her hair. She was even talking now, babbling nonsense to herself at all hours and giggling.
She had propped herself up on her arms and was talking at her reflection, chubby fingers gently probing the mirror's surface. She looked over at Martin and gabbled a question, her hand curling up so that she was pointing at herself in the glass.
'Yes, that is you bādikridjo' Martin smiled and sat down on the floor next to Yvette. He tapped her reflection and she followed the movement. 'That is Yvette.'
Her head jerked up to look at him, recognition in her eyes.
Martin's heart stopped.
'Yvette.'
She shrieked, a beaming smile on her face.
She knows her name..
Martin leant down and kissed the top of her head. 'Yvette.'
She wiggled, bumping his chin with her forehead.
________________________________________________________________
You will never read this letter because it will be thrown into the coals when it is finished but I am lonely and I miss you and I have too many thoughts stoppered up in my heart.
Yvette has begun crawling. I placed the doll you gave her at her christening before her and she pulled herself up to it. I do not know how I will be when she begins to walk-
________________________________________________________________
Martin had turned away for a split second when he heard Loyse gasp; turning back he was shocked to find Yvette sitting upright on the floor.
'A prank, surely? ..Loyse?'
'Not at all m'lord, watch!'
Loyse picked Yvette up under her arms and gently lay her down on the floor on her back. Yvette squawked in protest, rocking herself over onto her side and, using both hands, shakily managed to push herself up to a sitting position again.
Loyse and Martin clapped and cheered, and Yvette copied them, giggling and shrieking as she smacked her chubby hands together.
________________________________________________________________
I burn
I am bored, and drunk, and Yvette is asleep in her cradle. Why have never I never asked you whether you like men? I miss you. I am foolish.
Yvette remains permanently attached to her doll, though she has several more toys to play with. She knows you now, and other people, and can remember who she likes and dislikes-
________________________________________________________________
'There is my little flower!' Blanda cooed.
Blanda, Merula, and the rest of the family had arrived months ahead of Yvette's birthday to make up for missing her baptism. Obviously Martin didn't know precisely when Yvette's birthday was, so he had arbitrarily picked January 11th.
Frederick tickled Yvette's chin so that she looked up at him, and blew a raspberry. When Yvette laughed and took a deep breath to copy him, Frederick quickly turned her face back towards his mother so that Yvette blew a raspberry at her aunt.
'Oh!' Blanda said, with exaggerated outrage, 'Oh! How rude!'
Yvette giggled and slapped her cousin's knee, and blew another raspberry at Blanda as she sat down with everyone else at the dining hall table.
'Would you like to see Cousin Lottie?' Frederick asked. Yvette nodded and Frederick picked her up under her arms.
'Here you go!'
Frederick's wife Lottie was built like an egg. She had been the daughter of a bookbinder in her first life, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of swans. They had met while strolling through a park, and became mated within a week.
'Good morning pet!' Lottie placed a kiss on Yvette's cheek and gave her a cuddle. Yvette leant into the hug, resting her head on her shoulder. 'And how are you this morning?'
'Amm-mm-mm-mm-'
'I am very glad to hear it' Lottie held hands with Yvette as the ten-month-old shakily stood on her lap.
'She is getting very good at that' observed Martin, as he came into the room. He gave Yvette a quick kiss on her forehead and smiled.
'ɸatīr is very proud of you.'
'Ada!' Yvette beamed back at him.
Everyone froze.
'Did she just..' Big York looked stunned.
Lottie pivoted around to face Martin, holding Yvette around her waist.
'Who is that?' Lottie asked, pointing. 'Is that ɸatīr?'
'Ada' Yvette repeated quietly.
Martin picked her up and hugged her, trying desperately not to burst into tears.
________________________________________________________________
Dear Lucius,
I would like to formerly invite you to Yvette's first birthday. Christmas is before the official date I have chosen for her, so for this year alone I have decided to combine the celebrations-
________________________________________________________________
The castle was alive with candlelight and laughter, mummers prancing through the crowd wearing animal masks and playing instruments. Peasants and nobles mingled respectfully, while their children chased each other round the tables.
A raised platform had been erected at the top of the hall for the high table. Martin stood in the middle of it, at the front, and clapped his hands. The crowd fell silent, turning to look up at him expectantly.
'Thank you all for coming! It warms my heart to see you all holding to the spirit of this sacred tradition,' Martin raised a glass, and rest of the room followed. 'Merry Christmas!'
He drank deeply, then waited a beat until the room focussed on him once again.
'As many of you are aware, I have recently become a father. And as it will shortly be her first birthday in the coming year, I would like to take this opportunity to present her to you all tonight.'
Yvette toddled her way slowly up the ramp to the front of the stage, her tiny hands gripping a wooden frame on wheels. Loyse walked behind her, keeping her hands at her back in case Yvette stumbled.
Polite applause broke, several women and young girls cooing as they clapped. Several men cheered. A serving boy at the back of the hall set down his tray, and slipped away unseen. Blanda and Merula joined their brother and niece, their own children and spouses respectively lining up alongside them.
Yvette reached out and grabbed her father's hand, smiling down at the crowd of children that had pushed to the front of the stage to see her better. Martin raised his glass.
'Once again, Merry Christmas!'
Author's Notes
Glass mirrors were EXPENSIVE because they were time-consuming and difficult to make.
"The evolution of glass mirrors in the Middle Ages followed improvements in glassmaking technology. Glassmakers in France made flat glass plates by blowing glass bubbles, spinning them rapidly to flatten them, and cutting rectangles out of them. A better method, developed in Germany and perfected in Venice by the 16th century, was to blow a cylinder of glass, cut off the ends, slice it along its length, and unroll it onto a flat hot plate." Wikipedia
"In 1318, the Venetians—who boast a history as able glassmakers— attempted to introduce the craft of glass mirror-making to Venice with limited success. According to popular tradition, a German man, who has remained anonymous throughout the ages, recruited two Venetians and one Muranese (Murzio Da Murano, Niccolò Cauco and a man named Francesco) in hopes of sharing his techniques." AAV Barbini Specchi Veneziani
I know it says "a German man" but history gets things wrong all the time so I figured who cares!
bādi (sweet) kridjo (heart) - sweetheart
Allegedly "The earliest known use of the noun sweetheart is in the Middle English period (1150—1500). OED's earliest evidence for sweetheart is from around 1290, in St. Kenelm." Oxford English Dictionary
There is no difference between a baptism and a christening. The words can be used interchangeably.
ɸatīr = father (it is pronounced atir but obviously Yvette has trouble pronouncing her T's)
Mummers were wandering actors and musicians who were often paid to take part in medieval religious plays, holiday celebrations, and other important events. They would often wear animal masks, or even actual animal heads, while performing.
"Walking aids for young children have existed in Europe since the Middle Ages. The earliest type was a railed panel or an enclosed frame on wheels, designed to be leant on by the child. By the 17th century this design had developed into a structure that enclosed the child firmly, more like a modern baby walker." Victoria and Albert Museum

❝ The wolf who wins is the wolf you feed. The evil wolf feeds on anger, guilt, sorrow, lies, and regret. The good wolf needs a diet of love and honesty, spiced up with big spoonfuls of compassion and faith. So if you want the good wolf to win, you're going to have to starve the other one. ❞

Seasons Greetings
A/N: I know it's been a while since I wrote anything and this may not get traction because it is two OCs in a fandom, rather than established characters, but I hope you'll give this a shot! If you missed the bios on these two, you can read it here!
This covers the Spending Xmas Alone in @storiesofsvu bingo!
Also, let me know if you'd like to be on the taglist for these two!

Pairing: Benoit Montclair x Amelia Dansworth
~~~~~~~~~~
Amelia sat at her desk, typing away. Though it was Christmas Day, she had decided to come into the office--there was work to be done and if she didn't do it before New Years, she'd be worried for the whole vacation.
Besides, she wasn't doing anything for Christmas anyways; just sitting in her flat, drinking hot chocolate and watching some cheesy romcom on tv.
This seemed less pathetic. At least she thought so.
Suddenly, there was a soft knock on her open office door, and she jumped in surprise; she was supposed to be in the office alone today while everyone was off for the holidays.
But standing in the doorway was none other than Mr. Benoit Montclair, looking handsome as hell, even with his brow furrowed in concern, dark eyes on her.
"I thought everyone had the next week and a half off?" he said gently in his deep voice. He came into her office fully, standing in front of her desk.
Amelia blinked at him before responding, "they do--we do. But I wanted to finish this little financial snafu and it couldn't wait until the new year--"
"So you decided to come in on Christmas Day? No other day would suit you?"
She couldn't help but notice how he skipped over the "financial snafu;" did Mr. Montclair really trust her that much?
"I, uh, I don't have any family or anything to celebrate with. So, I thought I'd just get this done now." Heat rises to her cheeks, so Amelia switched it on him. "Why are you here, sir?"
Ben gave her a curt smile, lips pressed in a thin line. "My father is a workaholic and my sister lives in Japan."
"Oh...I'm sorry...."
He shrugs. "I don't really celebrate the holidays, anyways. And, like you mentioned, there is work to be done."
Running out of things to say, Amelia goes quiet. Her eyes slowly roam over her boss; from his Italian leather shoes, up his tall frame, and taking in his expensive suit--it probably cost more than her rent for a full year.
But what stopped her scan was a white envelope clutched in his hand.
Ben's eyes followed hers to the envelope, and he holds it up, glancing at it as if he also forgot he was holding. "Oh!" he started, "when I saw that you were logged in on site, I thought I'd bring you your Christmas bonus--so you wouldn't have to wait for the post like everyone else."
"Thank you, sir!" Amelia replied in shock. She had been looking forward to her bonus; it helped pay some of the end-of-the-year bills.
He walked closer to her desk, arm outstretched. But just as Amelia reached out for it, he flipped it out of reach. Confused, she looked up into his face, and he smiled softly at her.
"Do me a favor? Take the rest of your vacation off. I don't want to see yo here again before the new year, understand?"
The intensity in his dark eyes paired with that soft smile has her melting. "I--yes sir. And, um, you too?" She wasn't quite sure why she added that, but she couldn't stop the words from tumbling past her lips.
Ben's smile grew, showing a line of pearly white teeth. "I will try my best. It's hard when you're the boss."
And with that, he held out the envelope in his long, thin fingers. As soon as Amelia took it, Ben turned and headed out the door.
"Happy Christmas," he called over his shoulder before disappearing down the hallway.
"And happy new year," Amelia replied, sitting back. With her boss's departure, she felt a tension leave her body.
Shaking her head to clear it, she started typing again. But the thought of her Christmas bonus sitting on her desk kept pulling her attention. She knew she had to look at the amount, so she could better plan her bill payments.
Amelia used her envelope cutter to break the tape and opened it to reveal the cheque inside. But as she gazed at the amount, she almost dropped it in disbelief.
Her normal paycheque was £5000 a month; about £1k more than an entry position. She had been expecting a £100 bonus. Instead, she had received double her monthly amount.
This could pay bills for a few months! she thought, a lump in her throat. There had to be some mistake--but no, also in the envelope was a letter.
Eyes skimming over the words, Amelia found that Mr. Montclair gave her that bonus--as well as "other, faithful employees," the letter said--out of his own pocket.
It took her a few moments to process before she was able to continue working. But the rest of the day and well into the night, Amelia had a floaty feeling about her.
What if Gallowglass grew out his hair again--but longer, down his back--and he teaches Lyra how to do warrior braids?
Ooooo I want him to grow it back out! 😍
I feel though that Lyra might want to surprise him by learning it herself. Doing some searching in books, online, or talking to Diana, Ysabeau, and Miriam for inspiration.
Once the women of the family all know what she's planning, Freyja jumps in and just "You should have come to me first Lyra, these women, love to bits, don't know how to do propper warrior braids, especially not the ones from Gallowglass' time. I'll teach you."
The two bond over many nights practicing, while Gallowglass is none the wiser about his mates intentions.
Fic Rec Weekend List!
(was meant to post yesterday but Wash Day took long!) but without further ado, some fics I think you should very much read!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Right Bridgerton by stellata
Benophie is my life and love, but if you know me, you know I love a good crackship and Edwina/Benedict are one of my new faves. This is already a really fun fic, featuring Anthony and Benedict fighting over Edwina whilst Kate and Mary laugh in the background and Violet sighs.
Bridgerton and Sons by @newtonsheffield
Love this dearly, and everyone should read it! A brilliant modern Bridgerton AU.
This Town by @viscountessevie
You should read all of Sahara's fics anyway, but this is such a well-written exploration of John and Francesca and Frannie's grief. May have you sobbing.
Hope by TooYoungToFeelThisTired
Edwina's first ball after her scandalous first season doesn't go as planned. Panic attack but she luckily has a knight in shining armour!
Ragnall & Astraea, 1269-1270 C.E. by TheModernTypewriter
This series continues to have me in my feels and Addison is back and this time in Sept Tours. Can't wait to see the rest of her time.
A Touch of Homesickness and Dear Miss Marina Thompson by @isdathriantionnsgnadh
I love these fics! A Touch of Homesickness is a crossover of ADOW and Bridgerton in which the good Doctor Whitmore meets Miss Edwina when she's unwell and works to help her. Already so cute and so much fun.
Miss Marina Thompson is the story she deserves!! George and Marina fall in love and learn more about her family and her mother. Just in love with it!
Only You Always by @tiffanytlee  and The Embers of Our Love by cococris (@dreamofme9) are permanent fixtures lol.
What do you think Baldwin’s reaction would be to someone (Nora, maybe?) giving him flowers or a gift?
Tumblr media
He’d be stunned at first. Not used to actually get anything.
But Nora is insistent, standing there with her arm stretched out with the gift or bouquet in hand.
«What’s this my love?» He’d ask, moving closer to her to look.
«A gift. Happy birthday love.» The smile on her lips so soft he couldn’t help but lean in for a small kiss.
«It’s not my birthday—»
«I know that—but no one knows when it is, so I’ve designated it for today.»
A laugh left him, more surprised than anything. «Nora—»
«Happy birthday Lucius.»
Baldwin wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in for a hug, a soft «Thank you» leaving his lips.
The date became an annual day of celebration, the twins and Arielle especially loving that they had a day to celebrate him.
A Matter of Blood Story Introduction
Chizzy had always been taught that Creatures were supposed to stick to themselves, that relations between them wasn’t a positive but rather something to avoid. She was happy with that, happy with the friends she had in her own coven and even the occasional question from Diana about the whole thing. However, when her best friend moves to England, and Chizzy learns that there’s more going on there that meets the eye, she begins to realise questioning what she’s always been taught might be exactly what she needs to do.
The Driscoll family had always been tasked with keeping the peace between Creatures, with protecting them and humans from what might happen if the truth came out. But it’s a responsibility Alina never really had to bear the burden of because of her age, because things were quiet in the Creature world. As tensions rise amongst the Creatures, and Alina finds herself drawn into family drama, the impact that the Driscoll name can have on situations is something she finally realises the weight of, and how underprepared for that responsibility she really was.
All Monty wanted was a quiet life. A life where he could enjoy the simple beauty of things, where he could make art and ignore tensions slowly making traction in the Creature world. But a quiet life is easier said than done when your best friend’s family is at the centre of all the drama. Monty quickly finds himself joining the fight for change; finds himself falling for a witch when romances between Creatures is frowned upon; finds himself actively working to alter the course of history, rather than simply letting it pass him by.
The world slowly swam into focus. A heavy weight felt as though it was baring down on me, forcing my shoulders down and making it nearly impossible to lift my head.
‘What happened?’ I ask softly, forcing myself to sit up; to ignore the wave of dizziness that comes with the simple movement.
‘You’re alive.’ Marcus’s voice is scarcely more than a hoarse whisper.
I barely have time to open my eyes before I see his dark hair and he’s hugging me. But the gesture is tentative. There’s no force behind it, surprising given the speed with which he moved towards me.
‘Of course I’m alive,’ I mutter, before trying to pull away. ‘Marcus, what if I’m bleeding?’
‘You’re not,’ he says, a dark conviction behind his words that have me forcing my hands between us and pushing him away.
‘Marcus, what happened?’
Only now he isn’t completely covering my view, I can take stock of where I am. We’re out in the open, countryside on all sides. It’s not somewhere I recognise, but the fresh air is enough to force my thoughts to focus. To draw my mind back to what happened.
Benjamin. The sanatorium place. The –
My eyes dart to the place on my arm where he’d injected the needle; a far more menacing contraption at the end of it than those used when I’d wanted to give blood. Somebody has put a plaster over it, but I can still see the blood smeared around the area. A glaring reminder that it wasn’t all simply a nightmare.
‘Hey,’ Marcus says softly, his fingers feather light on my chin as he guides my attention away from my arm and towards him. ‘It’s OK.’
I wet my lips, wanting to ask how he can be so certain, but the words stick in my throat. The consequences of Benjamin having my blood are too great.
‘One pint,’ Marcus tells me, his voice filled with a bitterness that his attempt at clinical doctor can’t quite hide. ‘Sooty found it. It was marked up.’
All I can do is nod. The relief unfurling in my chest is welcome, but it does little to alleviate the concern coursing through me. There’s no guarantee that that’s all of it. Not guarantee that my blood hasn’t somehow injured one of my friends simply in their quest to protect me.
‘Alina – What are you doing?’
Despite the wave of dizziness, the darkness that crowds the edges of my vision, I force my hands to the floor and attempt to stand up. ‘Getting up,’ I tell him through gritted teeth.
‘Alina,’ he warns, but I glare at him as best I can.
‘I have to do something,’ I say, grateful when he braces a careful arm around my back; as he offers out a steadying hand. ‘I can’t sit around.’
There’s a tick of annoyance in the clench of his jaw, a soft tightening of his fingers at my waist. But it’s a testament to everything that’s happened, the understanding that’s settled between us, when he bites back whatever argument he’s desperate to voice, and instead merely helps me to stand.
All I can hope is that nothing worse has happened to the people I care about, simply because of the Driscoll name.
Part Fourty-Six
Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century
The house had been a whirlwind of activity since Martin had first brought Yvette home. Estienne had spent of his time cooing over the baby and worrying about the list of things that she would need. Josselin had rolled her eyes and gone down into the town, muttering something about over-emotional men.
Sister Rosaline hadn't been able to abandon her duties to join the household as Yvette's wet nurse, but she'd passed on the details of a second woman, Loyse, who had accepted the position. She was off somewhere now, setting up her things and sorting out the belongings of her own son, Jaquob.
Martin smiled. The boy had been hovering over Yvette all day, even letting her sleep on his lap while he held her hand.
Her first friend.
Yvette was awake now, eyes roving over her room. It was, temporarily, in the guest quarters while extensions to his tower were completed. There was a wooden cradle in the middle of the room - oak, covered in tangled vines and small birds - and a basket in the corner for dirty swaddling, but for the moment the room was bare of decoration.
'Do not worry,' Martin said softly, 'We shall have some tapestries cleaned and brought up for you.'
Yvette looked up at him, eyes rolling up immediately to stare at the ceiling then over at the window. Martin brought her over and held her up to the glass.
________________________________________________________________
'For the baby,' Miriam smiled, passing Martin a small wooden box.
Martin had given Yvette a proper Gaul baptism during their ride home. Now he had to pay for a Roman Catholic service to make everything legal and above board.
Matthew leaned over Martin's shoulder as he unboxed a silver spoon. The spoon was carefully engraved with YB, the letters entwined by tiny curlicues. 'That is beautiful!'
Martin leaned in and hugged Miriam. 'Thank you.'
'Of course! Anything for my favourite god-daughter.'
The guests parted behind her as Baldwin stepped through.
'Speaking of favourite god-daughters' Miriam murmured.
Yvette was gazing, enraptured, up at Baldwin as he carried her around. They had taken to each other immediately; Baldwin scooped her up and called her pignora, and Yvette shrieked with laughter for the first time ever and buried a tiny hand in his hair.
She was still playing with it now, winding copper strands through her fingers and watching the light play across them. Baldwin had a pinched expression on his face; as they drew closer Martin could smell why.
'All yours' Yvette cried out as Baldwin passed her to Martin, her big blue eyes filling with tears. Baldwin looked as though he'd been stabbed.
'Let us get you changed and Uncle Baldwin can carry you again' Martin kissed Yvette on the forehead as she started to sob, and went off to look for Loyse.
****
'What has happened?' Baldwin asked, as Matthew and Miriam blurted out 'Are you alright?'
'I asked Loyse to show me how to dress Yvette in case I ever need to in future.' Martin passed Yvette to Baldwin; he looked pale and green at the throat.
'And?' asked Baldwin, pointedly ignoring Miriam's unsublte shakes of the head.
Martin shuddered and turned even paler.
****
Later that evening, after the celebratory feast had died down and the guests had gone to bed, and Yvette had finally been peeled off Baldwin and put to sleep in the new nursery, Martin lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling.
Seeing his best friend holding his daughter, it was like - rītije - Martin swallowed the lump in his throat.
A future so tantalisingly close he could picture it as easily as breathing lay just in front of him on the other side of impossible and it was killing him.
Before, when it was just the two of them, - and isn't that a knife twist into his guts- he could pretend that it was fine, that meaningless hugs and stolen glances were enough to close the chasm in his chest.
Now though...
Now...
Now.
'He loves her too..' Martin rolled over, clenching fists into his pillow as he started to sob.
Author's Notes
From my research into medieval childrearing, it appears that nappies weren't used during the period. Instead, the child's swaddling acted as a kind of onesie plus, both clothing and diaper.
"...The most idiomatic and Roman of endearments is pignus. A pignus is whatever one gives as bond or security for a debt, or to assure appearance in court, good conduct, etc. By extension, a person who is a pignus can serve as a “collateral” or “hostage”—for example, in diplomacy between two states. When applied to children, as it sometimes is in epitaphs, in poetry and other emotive contexts, pignora casts them as “sureties” or “pledges” of the love of the parents, assuring the reality of their marriage. But in such contexts it has no legalistic flavor. Often the best translation is simply “dear ones” rather than something more literal, like “little guarantees.”" - Dickinson College Commentaries
Silver spoons: "In many religions, the christening of a baby is an extremely important occasion and one marked with a good deal of ceremony and hope for the future. It’s the moment shortly after birth where a child is named before their God and welcomed into the church as a newborn.
Many faiths have their own form of christening and celebration, but all these occasions tend to involve buying a gift for the new child. In many cases, this is a silver artefact or nicknack such as a spoon, box or bookmark.
There is a rich history for gifting silver christening spoons and it stretches back to Medieval times, perhaps even before then. The original reason for this was not because silver was a valuable metal but because it could help ward off evil and protect the child. The spoon later became a way to wish a child health and prosperity for the future and was highly symbolic.
As silver became a more valuable commodity, its gifting was more generally seen as a matter of prestige. It said something about your status in life and who you were. This is where the phrase ‘born with a silver spoon in their mouth’ came from, with all its negative connotations.
Today, giving a silver christening spoon remains part of the tradition and is usually given by a close family member such as a godfather or mother, brother or sister. The spoon can vary in design from the very ornate to a simple motif but it is normally engraved with the initials of the recipient child." - Edinburgh Silver
rītije/o - copulate (I'm using this as a stand-in for 'fuck' because the Proto-Celtic word list, which sadly is no longer available online, didn't have 'fuck' on the list).
