The cafeteria was a mess of noise, so much sound never really felt possible and yet it always seemed to surprise Mia no matter how many times she dared step foot in the place. But Belle had needed food, and a sly smirk had lit Robin’s face that was impossible to ignore.
‘King of the freaks,’ came a cheerful jeering voice, and instantly Mia’s attention shifted to Belle. A small smile was growing on her face, something almost shy about it.
‘Yeah, some things never change,’ Robin said, and Mia glanced towards Eddie. Despite the chaos of the canteen, his gaze lingered momentarily on Belle as he lowered his hands from his head.
‘I think Tink knows that,’ Mia teased softly, glancing back to Belle. A slight flush had flooded her cheeks as she looked to Mia.
‘Cafeterias are the same everywhere,’ she noted dismissively. ‘Please tell me the food improved though.’
Robin chuckled, slung an arm over her best friend’s shoulders. ‘Of course it didn’t,’ she said, gently guiding Belle towards the line. ‘But I don’t think we’ll get scurvy.’
Mia scoffed, glanced briefly back to Eddie. Perhaps Robin’s decision for the detour rather than sneaking off campus for food wasn’t such a bad thing.

‘Eddie?’ Belle asked, watching the figure jogging towards her across the car park. She still had her helmet balanced carefully on the bike, the one that she’d saved for and bought herself.
He stopped at the other end of the bike, puffing slightly but attention locked resolutely on her.
‘I’m sorry,’ he said once he’d caught his breath. ‘I shouldn’t have kept asking about everything. It was a dick move. You don’t owe me anything.’
‘Eddie,’ she said softly, taking a step closer to him. Part of her craved to tell him everything. To finally offload the truth of the last few years to somebody. If anybody wouldn’t judge her, it was him. She knew that. And yet she was terrified. He might have been called a freak by society, but she felt like one sometimes because of more than that.
‘Everything all right, Clary?’ Steve’s voice pulled her back to the present, and she glanced over her shoulder. He stood, framed in the doorway of Family Video, expression unreadable. After a few months working together, she recognised the soft concern in his voice; the tentative olive branch.
When she returned her eyes to Eddie, there was something curious behind his eyes. A question as he raised his chin slightly. Belle looked down, unable to take the scrutiny directly.
‘All good,’ she called back, glancing to Steve, hoping he wouldn’t hear the waver to her voice.
He lingered, before ducking back into the shop.
Eddie loosed a soft breath. ‘You don’t have to tell me anything,’ he reiterated gently as she looked back at him through her eyelashes. ‘But I’m here if you ever want to talk, yeah?’ Belle swallowed, wishing she could admit the affection she had for him; how much those words meant. Instead, she offered ‘Thanks, Eddie,’ and hoped it was enough for the moment.

Hearing voices wasn’t normal, Belle had always known that, always knew that admitting Axel was back would only land her back where she’d started. But now the voice’s owner stood before her, a towering figure that might have been worrisome even without all the other connotations.
‘It’s good to finally see you,’ Axel offered, though there was something condescending about the tilt of his head; he looked down at her with a smile on his lips she didn’t like.
‘Who are you, Axel?’ she asked, feeling her heart beat a nervous tattoo against her ribs. Part of her hated him, hated the part he’d played in her moving away. And yet part of her couldn’t hate him. He’d made sure she wasn’t alone during the darkest time of her life.
‘A friend,’ he said, smile faltering ever so slightly; the barest hitch of his voice separated the words. ‘I’ll see you soon?’
It was pitched as an almost tentative question, and yet Belle wasn’t sure how much say she would have in another meeting. In his voice bouncing around in her head again.
‘Belle?’ Tey’s voice was sharp with concern, it pulled her attention over her shoulder.
And, unsurprisingly, when she glanced back, Axel was already gone.
With a sigh, she started back the way she’d come, towards her brother’s voice. ‘Right here, Tey.’

‘You look handsome.’ Wayne’s words had not been what Eddie was expecting, and yet they kept circling his brain. He was in one of Wayne’s old suits, but in his usual trainers because the suit was already too much, and he hadn’t dared try tying the tie yet.
Would the Barrows agree? Or would they shut the door in his face as soon as they realised his surname was “Munson”?
‘You’re actually going to stand there all night, aren’t you?’
Belle’s softly teasing voice dragged Eddie’s attention back to the present. She was casually leaning out one of the upstairs windows, barely showing him the top of the dress she’d been so secretive about. Even Robin, who Eddie had tried to ask about it, had been surprisingly tight-lipped. Though, retrospectively, she probably knew no more than him and Mia would’ve been the person to ask.
‘And earn Moreno’s wrath? Ha,’ Eddie called back, taking a few steps away from the door. ‘I’ll just –’
The front door snapped open, and Eddie’s attention turned towards it guiltily. He felt the flush rushing up his face, heating his ears.
‘Phones exist. Tin cans and string. Mon dieu, you two are awful,’ complained Mathieu, motioning Eddie into the hallway.
Belle yelled something back in French that Eddie thought was rude. A clipped reply from a voice he assumed belonged to their mother only confirmed it.
Mathieu smirked at Eddie, but there was something shared there rather than it being at Eddie’s expense. He found he couldn’t help returning the gesture as he stepped into the house.
‘I’d give you the big brother talk,’ Mathieu offered nonchalantly as he eased the door shut, ‘but Belle’s probably got me beat in the threatening department.’
Eddie scoffed softly. ‘Moreno dubbed her Tinkerbell.’
Mathieu’s blue eyes lit with amusement. ‘She did? Oho, I knew she was good.’
‘Only because Hellfire is Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.’
Eddie’s attention snapped to Belle as soon as she’d started speaking. It trailed her as she descended the stairs, even as her gaze remained on her brother. Where her hair was normally down, she had pinned half of it up with a few curls bouncing around her face. The dress she wore was long, and the colours were like fire, other than the black bodice.
‘There was a girl,’ Eddie was distantly aware of Mathieu saying.
A small smile, something almost shy about it, curled onto Belle’s face as her eyes flicked to Eddie.
‘Ronnie graduated,’ she said, before finally stopping in front of Eddie. Even in heels, she was still considerably shorter than him. ‘You look handsome.’
‘You look beautiful,’ he said, swallowing before taking her hand and bowing to offer a kiss on the back of it. Anywhere else, the gesture might have been theatre, but in that moment it simply felt right. He made a mental note to thank Mia for setting up the little school dance for the theatre department, for extending the olive branch to Hellfire because it was their space too.
‘No later than midnight,’ chimed up Mathieu.
‘Wouldn’t dare,’ Eddie vowed, offering an arm out for Belle.
She poked her tongue out at Mathieu before taking the proffered arm. ‘The loose tie’s a nice touch, I like it,’ she offered softly.
Eddie grinned, because even if they didn’t get to graduate together, at least they would have had this night.

A Knife's Edge / Music and Lyrics Story Introduction
Belle Barrow thought her return to Hawkins would be quiet. She’d hoped she could simply make no waves and her transition back to school would be simple. What she hadn’t expected was for one Eddie Munson to not only be glad for the return, but for it to be an accusation of murder against him that finally uncovered some of the questions she’d had about Hawkins. But with the price for those answers seeming to be death, Belle begins to wonder if perhaps living in ignorance wasn’t the easier option after all.
Eddie hadn’t expected the disappearance of one Claribel Barrow to affect him as much as it had, and yet he’d spent months questioning her brother and best friend about where she’d gone. His concern hadn’t shocked Hellfire all that much, but they had to admit there were times when they wondered if Belle hadn’t met the same fate as Barbara. So, upon her return, it’s safe to say Eddie is glad to see her. Glad that her smile hasn’t changed. A smile that he’s in desperate need of as he learns about the darker side of Hawkins.
Following the events of the Mall that left Mia in no doubt about the burden her best friend had taken on his shoulders, she’s determined to make the most of the quiet moments. Even with the threats that had made Steve’s life hell finally appearing to have abated, Mia is still traumatised by the events, and the knowledge that she wasn’t able to help him through his own introduction to it all. And, with feelings towards one Robin Buckley raising their head, Mia’s final year at school looks to be an interesting one.
Between hoping the Upside Down had finally been destroyed, being glad her best friend, Belle, is back at school, and her own growing feelings towards Mia, Robin has a lot on her plate. Couple all of that with the fear of graduation breathing down her neck, the one thing Robin didn’t need to be bundled on top of it all was a supernaturally caused death. But that exactly what she finds herself faced with, and the decision on telling Belle the truth about what really happened – and how she knows Eddie isn’t behind it – is something she never saw coming.

Eddie saw the dark circles clinging beneath Belle’s eyes and wished there was more he could do to help her. Barely a week back in Hawkins and for him it was like nothing and everything had changed. On the one hand, seeing her had been enough to make the world stop. He wanted to tell her all those feelings that he’d previously tried to ignore; to admit the fear that had run icy fingers down his spine at the prospect of her really being gone. And part of him worried for once she might baulk at his honesty; that she needed the jokes to make things easier.
‘Have I got something on my face?’ Belle asked, hand straying to her lips.
‘No, shit, no,’ Eddie said hastily, forcing himself to look away from her. There were still times when it didn’t quite feel real that she was back. That for the first time they might actually have classes together.
‘Eddie?’
His breathing hitched ever so slightly. There was something about the way she said his name that he’d never quite been able to put his finger on. Some people made his name sound like a curse – for better or for worse; some of Hellfire made it so reverent it hardly felt like they were talking to him. But Belle Barrow almost made it sound like poetry. A song he’d never get tired of hearing.
‘When did you last sleep?’ The question tumbled out of him before he could think of anything else to say. His concern was easier to stomach when not looking directly at her, when he didn’t feel the urge to protect her quite as keenly.

Axel looked at Belle, and for the first time since she’d first seen him, she thought there was fear in his eyes.
‘What is it?’ she asked, voice softer than her rage screamed for. Him being there was something she thought deserved all her anger, and yet the reaction to being face-to-face with her was something that shocked the emotion into concern.
‘Nothing,’ Axel said, shaking his head as if to clear his thoughts. And while a little of the cloud of fear disappeared, a hint of it lingered. A hint that was impossible to ignore because it was too bright.
Belle scoffed softly, shook her head. ‘Yeah, you’re not getting away with that.’
A wry smirk flashed across his lips, a brief look of his usual arrogance. But it was there and gone in the blink of an eye.
‘Axel –’
‘Please,’ he whispered, cringing ever so slightly, ‘don’t call me that.’
‘I thought it was your name,’ she said, wondering if perhaps she might get actual information from him.
‘No,’ he said, taking a step away from her. ‘I…’ He shook his head, a flash of annoyance in his eyes that she knew, for some reason, was at himself rather than at her.
‘What is it?’ she asked, knowing that if she pushed him too far he might never tell her anything. Part of her had always wanted him to disappear. He was a lingering reminder of the worst time of her life. And yet part of her had found a kind of comfort in having him there when everybody else seemed so far away.
‘Don’t go looking for him.’
Belle recoiled as if the words had been a physical blow. ‘You can’t ask me to do that.’
‘But –’ he started, taking a step closer. But something must have flashed behind her eyes, because he retreated almost instantly. Ran a hand through his hair so that parts of it stuck up at awkward angles; it was a look she was familiar with from Tey.
‘He looked for me,’ she reminded him, voice firmer than she’d been expecting. An end to the conversation if ever she’d heard one.
Axel had obviously noticed the tone as well; he bowed his head. But not before Belle noticed the look of fear seemed to brighten in his eyes. She wasn’t sure if it was of her, or for her. Nor was she certain which of those options would have been worse.

Eddie fiddled with the lapels of his jacket, and wondered why he was doing this again. The jacket was out of Wayne’s wardrobe, the only formal thing in the caravan and looking the age it was. He guessed his uncle hadn’t worn it since his parents’ wedding, and wondered if it was worth “loosing” it before returning home. Ridding them both of the memories that were better left behind.
‘She said you were coming.’ Tey’s voice was filled with soft amusement, and earned Eddie’s full attention in an instant. He was dressed up for the wedding as well, but his suit looked newer, looked as though it had been bought specifically for the event. Not that Eddie minded, he just worried the Barrows might. ‘Didn’t believe it.’
‘Why?’
For a moment, Mathieu surveyed Eddie with a critical eye, the smile dimming ever so slightly. But the look was there and gone in a flash. ‘Didn’t seem like your scene.’
‘Eddie!’ Belle’s excited greeting pulled their attention towards her, towards the stairs she’d somehow managed to descend silently.
Eddie couldn’t help staring. Her hair was pulled into a plait which hung over her shoulder, small flowers dotted through where strands overlapped. Flowers which matched the soft lilac colour of her dress, of her eyeshadow. The dress itself hugged her hips before skimming to knee length, a ripple of material cascading down her side, gems glittering in it.
‘You look beautiful,’ he said, unable to keep the words from tumbling from his lips. Not caring that her big brother was standing there.
‘Thanks,’ Belle said, moving a hand to brush down her plait, but staying it before she made contact. ‘You don’t scrub up too bad yourself.’ The smile on her face was bright, was enough to almost completely undo Eddie’s composure.
‘Comport toi bien,’ Tey murmured, before slipping through the doorway to his right, leaving the two of them alone in the hallway.
Belle rolled her eyes before slowly making her way down the stairs. She stopped just in front of Eddie, the heels drawing her up just a little. That small smile danced on her lips still, the one that made Eddie’s heart stop. Made him wish there was more he could have done while she was gone. Made him realise that he really had had feelings for her.
Eddie swallowed.
‘Thanks for agreeing to come,’ she said, slipping her hand into his and giving it a squeeze.
‘Thanks for inviting me,’ he said, pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek. Perhaps agreeing to go to a wedding wouldn’t be so bad after all.
