The End and the Death: Part 3
The story begins 6 years ago when I was bothering my little brother one night. I had spent the night at my parents’ house over the summer (he was home from college) and he was just trying to get some play time in Warframe. In an effort to get rid of me, and he told me to read Horus Rising, and to only come back if I got bored.
I did not. In fact, that night I read the entirety of the first book and spent the next morning begging for the next. I’ve written extensively over the years about my experience with Warhammer (if you click the tag “Djem reads Warhammer” you can track my rollercoaster over the years) but the thing that I have been waiting for since I first started was the end. The End - and the Death.
You see, I am a unicorn. I have, despite my years both on the internet and in nerd fandom, not actually ever encountered details of 40k. Part of this is because Games Workshop, and Black Library by extension, are both utterly terrible at marketing. They seem to approach Warhammer with a “if you know, you know, if you don’t, may God be with you” approach that means that unless you actively go hunting for information (and if you are careful to avoid fandom circles and not read the afterwords of novels) it’s actually remarkably easy to spend the last 6 or so years having absolutely no clue what the hell happened at the Siege of Terra—or after it. (For context, I have both played the Space Marine game and owned the Roboute Returned model for basically the past 6 years and I neither knew Roboute was dead or that he had come back, because neither mentions either. Yeah, I know.)
Before 3 days ago, I knew the following information only:
1.       The Imperium survived
2.       The Emperor, if not alive, was at least known and venerated as a god
3.       Space Marines were still a thing, albeit organized differently
4.       The Primarchs, at least the loyal ones, were known in the future (if not still physically present)
5.       Xenos and man still fought
6.       Chaos still had a grip on the galaxy
7.       Horus lost
And that was about it. I didn’t know what happened to the primarchs after Horus was defeated (who survived, who died etc). I didn’t know what happened to the Emperor. I didn’t know how the Imperium came to be reorganized (although I did possess enough ability to discern, via context clues, that Roboute was at least responsible for the Codex and probably the reorganization of Legions into Chapters). I didn’t know what happened to many of the characters I had come to love and hate after the war was over. I knew virtually nothing. I didn’t even know if certain dead characters were actually dead.
As of 3:00 pm on Saturday, following the completion of EaTD3, I knew the following:
1.       The Imperium survived
2.       The Emperor “lived” to be venerated as a god
3.       Space Marines were still a thing, albeit organized differently
4.       The Primarchs, at least the loyal ones, were known in the future (if not still physically present)
5.       Xenos and man still fought
6.       Chaos still had a grip on the galaxy
7.       Horus lost
If you are noticing a particular sameness to the lists, it’s because End and the Death volume 3 told us nothing. In fact, it told us less than nothing, because at least nothing would be something. But EaTD3 was 400 pages of walking and a fight, and it ended so abruptly I didn’t even have time to realize it was over.
I realize, to many, that because, other than lore implications, EaTD3 had to only serve to answer canon questions which have been evolving for the past 30 years, the novel simply ending when Horus died is hardly an issue. Most people know what happens next, they’ve been immersed in the lore, they may have even already read what happens to most of the characters. I realize that I am a unicorn. But regardless of knowing or not knowing, this book was a book. It wasn’t a lore guide or a codex. It was a novel, and it was a novel that was the capstone of, if not the entire Heresy, then at the very least the Siege. The fact that it was written by the man who started the series, the man who made me fall in love with Warhammer, meant that, perhaps, I expected something more. I expected a novel, an ending to the characters and stories that I had loved for the past 6 years, not an abrupt closing to a story that remains unfinished. This is the end of the Heresy, and while for most characters the story doesn’t end here, we needed closure. Catharsis. We needed a denouement.
The fundamental approach I think was flawed. The story should have been written as though no one knew what was happening, as the ending of a story, not a list of lore points that wrap up one era to introduce a new one. We needed to look at characters that mattered, if not in the Heresy as a whole, at least in the Siege, and we needed to end their stories. We needed to look at characters who have been important since the beginning, and make sure that their stories continued to matter until the end.
EaTD3 gave us none of that. Oh, it was beautifully written of course. Dan Abnett is nothing if not a wordsmith, and as usual his books are a pleasure to read. His grasp of language and his ability to turn a phrase or coin a term are second to none, but this book, for perhaps the first time, left me wanting more.
EaTD2 was an emotional rollercoaster. I think I cried at least every two chapters—even recounting certain moments later had me tearing up with the grief and loss and sacrifice and heroism. But it ended as abruptly as this one dead—Sanguinius dead on the floor.
I think that is what got me most about this book—the lack of feeling. For a man who can make me tear up over the emergence of a tank from the mists on Calth, I was expecting a deep wellspring of emotion regarding, well, almost everything, but instead, I was left feeling hollow. Dorn retrieves the skull of Ferrus Manus, and we don’t even see it. He just pops it into a grocery bag and hands it off to a random Blood Angel and that’s it. The Emperor’s near death is mostly ignored, with the focus less on the man himself and more on figuring out how to rig up a makeshift pallet. Sanguinius’ body is an afterthought left to his sons, and Garviel Loken is killed in a GOT style death that makes you wonder if Abnett had simply run out of steam. This novel was, in short, a couple of fun easter eggs on a series of lore points long known and oft debated, and was, in the end, nothing more.
What follows is a list of my particular issues, not in any particular order: (hyperlinked bc tumblr gets mad at me when I write too much)
Sanguinius
Right Scene, Wrong Person
Waste of Time or Too New?
Needed More (+ weird things)
Garviel Loken

Note
I was listening to another podcast at some point a while back where they had an interview with you guys to advertize re: dracula coming out. And you guys said some stuff about Lucy that hit a weird nerve with me as a history buff.
So the VA described her as polyamorous, and it triggered some conversation about how her character gets pretty maligned for it. And that last part is an adaptation issue not present in the original text.
See, victorian era courtship did not come with a presumption of exclusivity the way modern dating does. You were not off the market until you were formally engaged to be married. So the general gist of it for upper and middle class folks (like the Dracula characters most likely are) is that there is this thing called the social season. And during the season there would be all kinds of parties and events where you would meet people. And the general structure was that if you went to a dance, you should dance with a lot of different people. Get a sense of the eligible bachelors/bachelorettes. And if you were a young man, you would be expected to go and visit each of the young women you danced with that night at some point during the week after. If you hit it off, you would then start courting (visiting back and forth attending other events together etc). But, as I said above, it wasn't exclusive. So a man would court a few women, and a woman would be pretty disappointed to only be courted by one man. As the season went on couples would get engaged (anding any other ongoing courtships).
So Lucy's situation, in its original context, goes something like this: Lucy is pretty and charming. A perfect victorian maid. She has many suitors. Three of them decide she's the perfect women for them. They each want to pop the question but they are good gentlemen so they agree to all ask her the same day so she can choose between them on her own terms. She is thrilled because of course she is. Any woman in her position would be! But! Before she can make her choice Dracula comes to steal her away. She gets terribly sick and dies. But then she is not dead after all. She came back all wrong and corrupted. Even such a bright, innocent, young woman as Lucy is not immune! It's tragic what she becomes.
By the time early film adaptations roll around though, courtship was mostly replaced by dating especially in America where it hadn't been so institutionalized. And now there is an assumption of exclusivity. Those poor men being strung along by that harlot Lucy when in the end there can be only one husband. No wonder she fell victim to Dracula's charms! And like, that was the exact opposite of the point in the books. But the culture was too different by that point to read the same way. So Hollywood made Lucy an example instead of a victim.
But yeah. I heard the polyamorous comment, and had a weird mix of "yay poly representation! That rarely happens," and "put that woman back in context, or so help me!" So when I saw you guys had a blog, I had to send a little mini rant. Feel free to disregard.
Thanks for the historical context! It is hard with historical texts to keep from bringing your modern ideas to our interpretations, but as an almost completely queer crew, it was hard to ignore the subtext in:
LUCY: Why can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble? But this is heresy, and I must not say it.
That’s what we’re talking about, we’re talking about subtext in a very sexy very queer-coded book. I believe the VA you’re talking about is Beth Eyre? As a professor, she knows this too and is playing with it in her performance. And she does brilliantly.
We’re not changing the text, as we’ve said before, we’re just having fun with what’s already there.
We’ll talk some more about this in our bonus eps, which I’m very excited about.

Rose's Day of Asks
Ok. I know I already sent you one. But now I really wanna now your answer to this one too. So pick the one you prefer.
Characters not actors. Let's put together a TTRPG group for a one shot. Who are you inviting?
Have a great Day💜
Yay! Thank you for giving me this question!
On behalf of socially awkward, queer autistic kids everywhere, let me introduce you to my one shot party:
Shin, 3 Will Be Free
Quiet, kind, nerdy, smart-ish, lucky, and in need of friends? I think Shin would be a perfect candidate for a one shot. He seems like the kind of player who might not say much at the beginning, but would get ahold of the game quickly, would be comfortable with the improvisational aspect of a TTRPG, and would probably come out of his shell the longer he plays.
Tumblr media
Heart, Moonlight Chicken
This is very much so that he has a reason to get out of the house. Honestly, Heart has been severely undersocialized the last few years, and has mostly stuck around Li Ming and Li Ming’s community since then. I’ve set entire parties up before just to give people better access to a queer community, I would 1000% set up a one shot just to give Heart a chance to make friends outside of Li Ming’s social circle. Plus I genuinely think he would be good at it.
Tumblr media
Aylin, 23.5
The hardest part of recruiting Aylin to play a TTRPG is getting close enough to her for her to listen to me. But the second she is presented with the knowledge that she could play…mm….Githzerai or some sort of Dark Heresy style game where she has any opportunity to play an alien, I think she would be there.
Tumblr media
Zhou Zi Shu, Word of Honor
You know I almost put Wen Kexing on here, because he’s a #dramaticbitch but he’s the type of #dramaticbitch that would probably be annoying for everyone else at the table. Zhou Zi Shu, however, is a smart, charismatic #dramaticbitch with a modicum of self restraint, and I would absolutely refuse to let him play a monk or fighter because I will not be arguing with him about martial arts. Thank you.
Tumblr media
Im Han Te, Sing My Crush
Im Han Te gives off the kind of jock-who-secretly-loves-nerdy-shit vibes that I think he would absolutely kill it in a TTRPG group. Not only that, but I fully can picture him getting in to mini-painting as a hobby. He’s also sociable but not imposing and clearly has a penchant for adopting introverted queer kids so I think he’d be a great resource for the other people in the group, and he’d 100% help them figure out the rules if they didn’t know how to play.
Tumblr media
Erika, KinnPorsche
Would I allow Zhou Zi Shu to play a martial class? Absolutely not. But, Erika? Oh she’s only allowed to play a gunslinger. Mostly because I think she deserves to have even fancier and more badass guns in her arsenal. Also you know she’d come up with such a badass character, and she’d make my life a living hell in the best possible way if I was GMing the game.

I know the aesthetic is "everyone is filthy and bleeding and the worlds are all polluted and rotting and everything is awful all the time" but considering one of the Ruinous Powers is literally the god of filth and disease, it would make sense for the Imperium to have a culture of purity and cleanliness actually
"To despoil the Emperor-given body of humanity is heresy of the gravest order! You wash your face young lady or the pox-father will strike you down with zits before the Sanguinalia dance!"
People on ships probably have ritual cleansing periods based on the Terran day-night cycle, Ultramar has Roman-style public baths where the Ultramarines hang out
Of course since this is 40k they're going to be absolutely unhinged about it
Commisars shooting soldiers because they're not keeping clean enough when there's mud and blood and death everywhere and they've been fighting orks for the last solid day
Men dying of thirst so the general can have his twice-daily bubble bath to show his piety
The Sisters Hospitaller do canonically daube their armour in 'protective' incenses and ointments, either for genuine protective reasons, weirdass Imperial superstitions or maybe just so they can smell pretty while they're stalking through crowded wards saving lives or torturing injured heretics before executing them with bolt pistols I don't know (her ass has NOT agreed to medical neutrality!)
so I like to think that, like we say "sing yay many verses of this song while washing your hands to make sure you've done it long enough" they're doing the same with Imperial hymns
(not sure about the Militarum's doctors since they sometimes lean into "ghastly WW1 field hospital" vibes, but the SH's actually study new things and have access to medical texts and research mutation and xenobiology so I think they have a grasp of medical sanitation and PPE, most Astartes probs do too)
Picture a Astra Militarum doctor, Sister Hospitaller and Spess Mehreen Apothecary all stood by hand-sinks singing as they wash their hands:
Happy those who do not follow the counsel of the wicked, Nor go the way of sinners, nor sit in company with heretics. Rather, the law of the Imperium is their joy;    the Emperor’s law they study day and night. They are like a tree planted near streams of water that yields its fruit in season...
Some Astartes or Battle-Sisters do the whole "fight gloriously for days without rest against impossible odds until relief comes" thing that happens every week or so like clockwork and realistically come out the other side absolutely filthy and rancid, so they flagellate themselves half to death for failing to meet the ritual bathing criterias needed to maintain their divinely-granted human forms because they're terrifying religious fanatics

Magnus' Chinese Name is Pretty Neat
I got myself a Magnus the Red kit, yay!
I was looking at his box and I noticed the translations of his name. French/Spanish/Italian are pretty straightforwardly 'Magnus the Red'. The Japanese one basically says 'Thousand Sons: "Red" Magnus'. Then there's the Chinese one that I couldn't really read. So I applied a bit of dictionary research, and found out that the translation is pretty nifty.
Tumblr media
It starts off fairly predictably: 千 (qiān) - thousand 子 (zǐ) - son/child
Then we get an absolute banger pair: 红 (hóng) - 'red', but also 'revolutionary'. Which I guess makes sense in the context of Chinese political history, but coincidentally works pretty well for the Horus Heresy too. I'm definitely going to stop saying 'traitor primarchs' and start saying 'revolutionary primarchs', hehe. 魔 (mó) - conveniently means both 'demon' and 'magic'. Perfect for Magnus.
So, 'Thousand Sons' and 'Red Demon'. That certainly checks out. Then we get into transliterating 'Magnus'. 马 (mǎ) - this means 'horse', which sounds a bit weird until you see that it also denotes a piece in Chinese chess and also the knight in Western chess. Like, yeah! He is definitely a chess piece in a big game. That's bang on.
格 (gé) - this has a bunch of meanings, but the one that really caught my eye was 'to study exhaustively'. Yup, he sure do.
努 (nǔ) - this means 'to exert/ to strive'. Ough, he tries so hard. (I'm not crying, you're crying.)
斯 (sī) - this one puzzled me a bit, it has some general meanings like 'this' or 'such', and is used for emphasis. But it also means 'to lop off', and I wondered if it's a reference to his lost eye?? Bit of a stretch, I'm almost certainly missing some nuance here.
But anyway, I thought that was kinda cool and interesting.
The final disclaimer here is that I only ever took beginners Mandarin like ten years ago, and my ability to look up Chinese characters in a dictionary is based on having learned to navigate kanji in Japanese. So if there are any actual readers of Chinese out there who would like to improve on my interpretation, I would love to hear from you!

What is your take on the best reading order for Salamanders-stuff?
I starteed with the first half of the Heresy, jumped to Vulkan's Primarch-novel after Unremembered Empire, read the "let's bring him back"-arc of the Heresy, Read the 40k Omnibus, returned to the Heresy ... and that was NOT ideal!
So, what would you recommend? And, what aditional 40k-books besides the Omnibus do you think are esential?
TL;DR - I'm not the best person to ask because there's a lot I haven't read, but imo, if you're not invested in the Horus Heresy, go straight to Nick Kyme's series. Salamander Omnibus, or better, pick up the Lords of Nocturne set that includes Rebirth. (Coming out this Spring!) Alternatively, read Forge Master first and then go to Tome of Fire. If you are invested in the Horus Heresy already, maybe starting there is better, but again, I'm not the best person to ask about that.
Long answer below!
To be honest, I'm not sure I have a good answer for this because any time anyone discusses reading orders, I always think "Whatever order keeps you interested and reading is the best." 😅
Also, I know this is pretty much a crime, but I haven't finished the Salamander-focused Heresy-era books. I... Really struggle with the Heresy, tbh. I fell in love with 40k through a tabletop RPG set in the 41st millennium, and I still tend to think of the Heresy as a quasi-mythical thing that happened in the distant past. Currently, I use the Heresy-era books I have as reference material, but I recognize that not completing them leaves huge gaps in my knowledge. I plan to get through the Salamanders ones (and a few other 30k books, including Josh Reynolds’ ones!) this year.
I read the Tome of Fire series around 2019 and have gone back to various parts since, but I haven't fully reread it. I should do that. I've reread Rebirth a few times, including recently, because it hits juuust right for me. Also, I have a physical copy. 😅
I don't feel super qualified to answer because of all that, but I suppose my recommendation would depend on whether the reader jives with Nick Kyme's writing or not.
If they already like 40k and don't mind Nick Kyme's style, (like you and me, yay!) the available choices are either the 40k Salamanders books or the Horus Heresy. Unless a reader is already invested in the Heresy series, I'd say pick up the Lords of Nocturne collection that's coming out this April, as that will contain the whole of his Salamanders series, several short stories and Rebirth. (Finally! Maybe people will actually read my favourite Salamanders novel now.) Alternatively, the old Salamanders Omnibus has most of the same material, but without Rebirth.
After that, they have three choices: Dive into the Horus Heresy, go for David Annandale’s Primarch novel and/or his Space Marine Battles Book Forge Master, or follow me into the sad world of scrounging for snippets in codexes and White Dwarf. 😭
That being said, I honestly think the 8th Edition Codex: Salamanders is worth a look for readers, despite being game-focused. There are lots of fiction snippets in there. Would be fun to see fanfic authors expand some of them... FFG's Deathwatch RPG sourcebook also does a good job at setting the vibe, though it's older and a little out of date.
There are some solid short stories out there too. I love Burden of Angels, but the two by Graham NcNeill in Shattered Legions are pretty good. (Shattered Legions might be another good way in, hmm.) Artefacts was an interesting read, I really liked Vulkan's voice in it.
For people who struggle with Nick Kyme's style, reading David Annandale’s Vulkan: Lord of Drakes and/or Forge Master might be the best way in. Personally, I found Vulkan: Lord of Drakes a bit strange and didn't finish it, but although I've only just started Forge Master, I'm enjoying it so far. It's from the PoV of a techmarine and the first Chapter contains a description of Nihilan's forces besieging Heliosa. If someone read that book first and then moved onto the Tome of Fire, they might be a bit better primed to roll with the story. I think Overfiend also has a Salamander in it, but I haven't read that one yet. Also, Annandale’s debut The Death of Antagonis was Black Dragons-focused, but I haven't read that one either.
One more thing a reader could do is find media relevant to conflicts the Salamanders were involved in. For example, there isn't (as far as I'm aware) a Salamanders-focused novel set during the 3rd War for Armageddon. However, by reading about that conflict in general, a fan would come to understand a bit more of their favourite Chapter's history. (This is why I was asking for material related to the Talledus War recently!)
Sorry I couldn't give a better informed answer! Maybe I'll have a more fleshed out opinion later this year. 😊

can i ask for more info about magnus in eisw? he is my beloved blorbo 🥺
yes! EISW Magnus is VERY fun, I'd say they're just vibing but they're actually plotting so much that it's accidentally playing into Tzeentch's hands
during the psychneuein chaos on Prospero, Magnus manages to get stung and, in opposition to jokes about intellect devourers, his brain is pretty tasty to bugs. he pretty much immediately goes down, partly because Tzeentch takes this as their opportunity to grab him
after ten thousand years/just a couple of IRL seconds in Tzeentch's endless noneuclidean torture maze, Magnus makes a deal and then proceeds to sit up and burn out their own eye (and the psychneuein larvae, of course). between the brain damage and the Tzeentch gameshark attached to their brain, randomly feeding them information, this makes them really, really fucking weird. I've made jokes about them suddenly knowing Amon's genetic structure is identical to some guy who died over two thousand years prior on another planet, referencing the horus heresy, just having the wikipedia page for damascus steel pop up in their head, etc
the one thing they DON'T know is what Tzeentch is or what the deal actually means, since it wasn't exactly a negotiation, it was just being worn down until they did what it wanted. chaos gods don't care about contracts! this kickstarts a very strong and frantic curiosity regarding it, which is why they make a habit of collecting favours from their siblings (or straightup blackmailing Alpharius Omegon, since they know some stuff that would probably get them executed)
also, you know how cheetahs are ridiculously anxious little creatures, so zoos give them emotional support dogs to take clues from so they're less anxious? that's Magnus and Leman, Magnus is the dog. they're very good friends. Magnus is less good friends with Mortarion but she kidnaps him for real before the heresy for a Fun Quest Into The Warp!! Yay!!! and they do end up eventually bonding a little, enough so that she takes some pretty drastic measures (past the kidnapping itself) to keep him alive until they can try and find a solution to his whole deal

i'm gonna ramble about sepherine now cuz i'm obsessed with her and i love ramble okay YAY
she was like, for sure a very good soldier. part of a minor order but content with going unrecognised and under the radar because she was happy to be serving higher purpose (the emperor and the purging of heresy) and she was eventually promoted to (the sole) legatine (of her order)
over time contempt for space marines started slipping into her mind, the fact that while she had to work and train and fight for decades to reach her position space marines were simply (in her eyes) Given that level of power irritated her to the point of opening the pathway for chaos
this irritation lead to anger and left her dissatisfied, first with the space marines and then with the sisters themselves. she felt she was more than worthy of being a canoness, more worthy than their current canoness. she spread this feeling among her own squad and slowly started swaying the sister superiors who weren't under her command to her side
after an oversight in command from the canonness lead to about a dozen sisters dying (an impactful number to this smaller order) sepherine took the opportunity to launch support for a full coup, slaying the canoness (and her palatine) and installing herself as the New canoness
it was only Now that she fully revealled that she (and her squad) had turned away from the emperor and had pledged themselves to tzeentch. the other sisters had already gone too far to be welcomed back into the imperium, assisting her in her heretical coup and installing an acolyte of tzeentch as a canoness so she forced them to decide either to worship tzeentch or to get a bolt in the head
ok rambing over yaaay

Here, have some "smoll Isaac in love with Dracula before he could even lay his eyes on him" for the heart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born to simp for the Dark Lord. <3
I can't believe I was granted the opportunity to unironically call Isaac a baby
but here he is, a baby <3 he's so cuuuuuuuute
look at him, look at his big smile, so happy to have embraced heresy, so giddy to commit blasphemy, all ready to grow up into a twisted adult doomed to die young in the name of a sensless sacrifice <3 he's all "yay, Dracula! :D", unaware that his psyche is going to be shattered in a million pieces in 10 years or so
the fact that he kinda looks like Ted (who, btw, apparently had red hair as well) just drives home further how this poor boy never had the chance to live a normal life <3
Tumblr media
Also this is just him in a nutshell. He's genuinely trying to comfort the other kid (Julia?), but his idea of comforting is "look at us, we're standing against God, Lord Dracula loves people like us! Feel all the demonic power around us, yep we have nothing to fear!".
Imagine him talking like this to Hector to placate his doubts about committing genocide :) "this is our place, this is our home, this is our purpose! we'll create our heaven together!" he's trying his best I swear, it's just that his best is... deranged lmao.
Also a little extra baby simping:
Tumblr media
"this is the only place we can go anymore" i am gnawing at my own fingers
(also if that is Julia love the implication that after not even 2 years she went like "fuck this shit i'm out" and peaced out. or maybe Dracula drove her away to isolate Isaac :) and this manga very much does not follow the canon ages, otherwise Hector would have looked younger than Isaac in that one page, but in canon Julia is six years younger than Isaac :) what happened to that literal child is the mystery of the ages)

“Why do you think the New edition of Horus Heresy isn’t doing so well?”
Multiple reasons, I think, but knowing veteran narrative and competitive players from the previous edition , a few bullet points.
* The distinctions between the legions, minus the various pdf based units, are less significant now than they once were. There are some genuine improvements: rule bloat has been massively reduced, and some Legions finally feel viable. But the reduction or PDF-ing of the unique Legion specific units has hurt. Some , like the Ultramarines, have lost some truly interesting stuff. The Thousand Sons are a shadow of their former selves in some ways, having lost many of their Psychic advantages. Many Legions have lost key, interesting characters.
* There are still too many close assault based Legions, and not nearly enough in terms of shooty. In a science fiction game, this is not good.
* Many of the Legion-specific PDF units aren’t that good. Many are very “cut and paste” - the same template, some even using the same colors, merely rearranged. It’s quite lazy design. And we still lack Sanguinary Guard, proper Atramentar, etc. Almost a year in we have no rules for Blackshields or Shattered Legions, no new Grey Knights/Knights errant, etc.
* The other PDF units are even worse. They have been poorly edited and proofread, and the points costs for most are ludicrous. Others are armed with the wrong weapons.
* Some Rites of War have completely disappeared or significantly changed, rendering some armies useless. That Vigilus Operti right you loved? Gone. That ability to take more than a single heavy support option in most lists? Gone.
* this Edition is not friendly to tanks and artillery, a major draw for many players. Artillery has been badly nerfed, transport capacity has been massively reduced, and some (the Macharius Omega, the Caestus, the Baneblade, Drop Claws, the Mastodon, to name only a very few) are so badly redesigned that to take them is a liability, even in narrative play.
* The edition has significantly weakened the Solar Auxilia (in part, because of the above in part because the designer apparently feels any non-Legion armies should be favored as allows. The Mechanicum has lost loads of options. The Imperial Knights now require Knights Armiger, reducing the value of that big expensive stompy army you built, and the best Knights Armiger are not even available to the Knights! They’re Mechanicum only!
* The Sisters gained a few units! Yay! No models for them, and challenging to kitbash: boo!
* Most flyers have lost Jink.
* Assassins are, for the most part, a huge waste of points.
* Two factions with lots of players last edition, factions that invited and required kitbashing and modifications, have yet to receive any lists, and it’s now been strongly suggested they’ll only appear as truncated allies. Goodbye to Daemons and Imperialis Militia.
It’s not hopeless, but this is essentially what happens when the complaints of a few tournament gamers are used to inform the design process.

i believe at this point it is traditional to ask: chocolate opinion lightning round? white chocolate, fine or heresy? ruby chocolate, innovation or marketing gimmick? milk chocolate, reasonable or a waste of a good bean? dark chocolate, too bitter or a good way to learn the nuances of the cocoa? super dark 100% cocoa chocolate, ridiculous or an even better way to get acquainted with the cocoa? finally, yay or nay on hershey and butyric acid in chocolate
As I've said before: it's disgusting and it should die. I never got to try ruby chocolate, although it doesn't sound appealing. I do like milk chocolate, although dark chocolate is my favourite. 100% cocoa sounds... far too bitter, even for my tastes. I highly doubt anyone actually enjoys that. Hersheys is... fine, I suppose.

Finally saw the tag @crazy-fruit (tumblr mobile is weird sometimes, sorry ^^')
RULES: answer the questions, then tag some folx you want to get to know better/catch up with.
Last Song: I'm not sure what the actual last song was, but I've been listening to Doc Holliday a lot lately. I really enjoy that weird Country/Rock Mix.
Last Show: It's been a while since a show really captured me, but I guess the last ones I finished were The Legend of Vox Machina and Harlem? Sometimes I just start watching something and then lose interest within the first two episodes, so it's a bit hard to say xD
Currently Watching: Kinda in between shows right now, so nothing truly..I guess you could count Der Schwarm, which I started watching because I remembered liking the book back then. (And sort of some weird geman soap opera about a Hotel that I watched because I was bored as hell, jokingly/casually started shipping two characters and apparently I'm gonna continue, because I'm old and that's my life now).
Currently Reading: Just finished Menschen, Göttern gleich (Men Like Gods) by H.G. Wells and I'm about to start Der Name der Rose, 'cause I only know the movie so far. And I'm trying to finally finish The Horus Heresy series xD
Current Obsession: Oh god..nothing I would count as an obsession? For some reason Motherland: Fort Salem has been on my mind for a while now, which is why I kind of lost my writing flow (gotta get back to my lovely niche german crime show soon ^^'), but I wouldn't call it an obsession really
Unrelated Obsession: I mean, I didn't even have one, let alone two? :D How about a potential future obsession: my flatmate is trying to get me to start painting miniatures for the Warhammer 40k tabletop game (mostly because he hates painting), and there's a solid 50:50 chance that I will either hate it or become obsessed with it xD
Since I mostly just lurk around, I don't really have anyone to tag, sorry :/ (yay socially inept/shy people ^^)
