i’m about to start gatekeeping interacting with fic authors from a lot of y’all. u need to learn how to behave

“i need more” “pls continue this” “when are you posting the next bit” why don’t you try showing some proper appreciation for what’s already written before you go demanding more!!!

a lot of time and energy goes into each piece of writing and it is incredibly disappointing for the primary feedback to be “give me more!” if you’re trying to motivate authors to continue, this kind of response has the opposite effect.

you know what is motivating? specific praise.

let me break it down for you.

How To Leave A Comment Without (Unintentionally) Sounding Like A Pri- [GUNSHOT]

point out a few specific things you liked about the fic and why. how it made you feel.

highlight a line or two or three that stuck out to you.

if it’s an incomplete work, express excitement at seeing where they’re going — without a demand for more.

it’s quite simple, and it doesn’t even have to be a long thing. this can be done in a hundred words or less.

and yeah, it takes effort. takes a bit of time. but fandom is about mutual support. it’s about community.

fic authors are not celebrities who don’t even see your attempts to get their attention. there is a real person on the other side of that screen living a real life, and if you want to encourage them in their craft and properly motivate them to write, try treating them like a fucking human being.

authors put in hours to create content (that only ends up not being truly appreciated). i think you can spare a few minutes to leave a detailed, thoughtful comment in turn.

idk just a semi-friendly reminder that authors don’t owe you shit actually

Giving credit to original posters, creators, artists, photographers, and sources matters.

It matters to the person who put in the time and effort to create the content. Whether it's finding that photo and editing it to make it stand out. Or downloading that video, editing it, coloring it, turning it into a gif, adding subtitles, etc. Regardless of what you do (job/student), I'm sure you too would not like it if someone else takes credit for your work.

It matters to people who want to know context. Was it said by a fan, your favourite's bestie, a reputable journalist? Published by a tabloid or the New York Times? From last week or last year? Is it an original, or did someone get photoshopped in for a meme?

It matters to people who may want to explore more content of that particular publication, so they will continue to publish top-notch articles. Or give kudos to a budding artist for their outstanding art work, potentially encouraging them to create more. Or compliment that photographer on capturing their fave in just the right light.

It matters, because even though it may take you an extra minute or so to add on that name or link, it is the right thing to do.

writing is torture but unfortunately i am a writer and will legitimately die if i do not do it

#writerblr #writer memes #reading your own work trying to decide if anything is publishable is like taking repetitive psychic damage #however.#there are people who use a.i. to 'write' (disgusting)#and talentless editorless people who have migraine-worthy books on the shelves #so while self criticism is a feature of artistry that does not miss me #i feel slightly less worried knowing for a fact that i am both a human person who wrote something and that i carefully edit most of my work #and make sure not to make amateurish mistakes like Buttery Butter (smiled happily)#or like using the same uncommon word too often within a small space #unless its intentional for prose or rhyme purposes #you can reuse common words like said or the or and mostly as you like but usually dont use words like miasma a bunch of times in the same #same paragraph #flow. pacing. word choice. grammar. writing past a certain level is both creative and formulaic #past that certain level it takes no longer only talent or skill but a trained eye and a willingness to edit #it takes a lot of reminders and witty catchphrases for common mistakes and reading and rereading your own work #and most artists start disliking their work at a certain stage of this but #you have to push on #this is your calling. you must learn to banish self doubt and put in the hard work and time it takes to make something truly amazing #learning discipline is hard for me-- i ride on talent and inspiration a lot #but discipline is necessary because a lot of the writing process is tedious backreading editing research etc #obviously you dont have to do most of your editing on the first draft like i do #but you do have to get it done eventually if you want to truly get on the next level past just hobby writing #not that theres anything wrong with doing it just for fun and casually

Will Dipper always have almost no magic of his own, even after being reincarnated? He obviously has a talent for life magic but he can’t really train to get better at it, because he’s using Bill’s magic for it (and we know the latter hates it lol). I just don’t want my guy to be sad and miserable forever🥺 He deserves to become a cool and independent magician! And prove his bullies wrong once and for all!

A reincarnation of Dipper could definitely have more magic of his own! And as clever as he is, there's a bright future ahead of him. Perhaps even one where he's excellent at life magic and healing, and getting a little cocky about his own talents.

Bill, of course, upsets all the plans he had for his life. Again.

The good news is that it's a life where Dipper could use more life magic. Theoretically. The problem there is going to be hashing out how he can use it once they're bonded again.

Dipper wasn't trying *quite* as hard as he could have to break the thing #Something kept holding him back #Alternately: Healer/Doctor Dipper who's now Very Annoyed that Bill's getting in the way of his chosen practice #So what if it makes Bill sick? Screw him. If they're stuck together then what's the magical equivalent of separate bank accounts #No way he's giving up his awesome talent. He's great at it. It helps people. Bill can go kick rocks #Alternate of the alternate: Dipper insisting *Bill* learn a few life tricks even if it's uncomfortable for him #Goading him into it by declaring that well. His knowledge isn't *really* infinite without *That* area of magic. Is it.#Good job Dipper! You truly know how to needle your husband into doing stuff he normally wouldn't no matter the lifetime #Probably comes in handy when Dipper gets Very Hurt that lifetime! Their toes were forced to meet in the middle. “This is nice,” Cal said enthusiastically, hugging his shins closer. Fenris knew at once this whole idea had been a mistake; he’d long since learned Cal only called things nice when they were, in fact, horrendous.
