trying to figure out faces for these gay people in witchmark by cl polk hehehe... had a lot of fun giving tristan the most Jaw ever
[id: two bust illustrations of miles singer, followed by two bust illustrations of tristan hunter. miles is wearing a black waistcoat and green tie in one drawing, seen in profile, wearing small round glasses. in the other, he is facing the viewer, wearing a brown coat. his "little doctor glasses" are labelled, as are his sack jacket, his tired face, and his unbrushed hair. he has an olive complexion and dark brown hair, with honey brown eyes.
the first drawing of tristan has him facing the viewer, wearing a grey waistcoat with a silver ascot. his wavy blond hair is braided over one shoulder and artfully swept back. he has arched brows, narrow blue eyes, a prominent jaw, full lips, and slightly tan skin. he has one dimple. in the other drawing he is seen in profile, wearing a red robe embroidered with gold, using one hand to brush loose hair off his forehead. his thick eyebrows, "silly monogrammed robe", and blond hair are labelled. end id.]

There's something about queer cozy reads that soothes the soul. Speaking of, I'm hosting a Read-Along for Phantom and Rook on Halloween!
I've partnered up with Fable to give away ebooks to those who join the book club, and if you'd like to participate but prefer audiobooks, let me know! I still have some Spotify codes that I'd be happy to giveaway.
The book club is already set up, link is here. I'll also be creating a Storygraph challenge, and sharing updates on here for those of you who like to quietly participate. It's a great way to celebrate PAR's book birthday, and to prepare for the sequel coming out in a couple months!
Blurb:
Arlo Rook has decided it’s time to move out of Garren Castle, home for orphans of all races, magical or not, at 100 years old.
It’s not the first time he’s left home, but after a setback that landed the Hedge Witch in the hospital a year ago, he ended up right back at square one. But now he’s ready to strike out on his own, despite his friend’s worries that he’s not ready for the ‘real world.’
Then, he crashes into a mess of copper curls and bright eyes, sending apothecary goods and his life into a chaotic mess. Thatch is a mysterious and incredibly wealthy benefactor of Levena, only spoken of but never seen. He requests a night of Arlo’s company and a tour of the city, which Arlo immediately declines.
But that’s not the last time they see each other, and it certainly wasn’t the first. Arlo doesn’t remember him, no one remembers Thatch after he visits, but Thatch never forgot the Witch with a familiar mark on his face.
Thatch Phantom is an immortal, the last of his kind and perpetually bored. When he’s not closing inter-dimensional rifts and corralling demons, he’s visiting his favorite city of all, Levena. Centuries ago, when life was particularly dull, he set up a scavenger hunt for a starving village, providing them with a year’s worth of supplies.
He anonymously returned year after year, upping the ante and providing less practical things, as the village had become a city and was wealthy beyond belief. Festivals were thrown in his honor, and have continued every year since. Hundreds of years later, The Game is still put on by the fabled ‘Scarlet Illusionist’, but no one has figured out who blesses them with the puzzles.
Once again, Thatch is listless and has decided to throw a wild card into this year’s Game. Whoever discovers him will win one wish of their choice, no restrictions. Aside from the obvious, such as no falling in love, murder or resurrection.
What he didn’t anticipate was crashing into the one person whose soul mark flares like a beacon when Thatch is around, teasing the immortal with the one thing he wants most.
Someone to call home.

I probably should have been sharing here for years, because people on tumblr remain My People, but I’ve neglected to ever talk about the candles I make (cross posting is HARD, okay?)
But it’s black Friday, I’ve redone my packaging, and I’m proud of these candles! They're all inspired by the fandoms I've been in and they come in tins (safe for dorms and longer lasting) and votives (a perfect sample size). Each one is handmade by me and comes with art I've drawn.
The two above are for Our Flag Means Death! Ed's candle smells like yummy lavender soap and the open ocean. Stede's candle smells like orange marmalade and tea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are four candles for Good Omens, inspired by Aziraphale, Crowley, the bookshop and the flat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My other best sellers are The Magnus Archives and the Witcher. Jon's candle is a layered candle to symbolize his corruption by the entities. It starts with vanilla and gets spicier the longer you burn the candle.

I make fun shapes too!
Please go check out my shop on etsy! I'm currently running a sale, 20% off if you spend $30. I have a lot of options and can do customs if there's a character you don't see, or if you have an OC who needs a candle. They make great little gifts and are so easy to wrap.

Alright as we draw near the end of the transrightsreadathon I thought I would post some recomendations of books by authors who are trans. I'm a huge fan of sff series so here are the first books in 4 series that really worked for me. They are exciting, romantic, brutal and thoughtful by turns. Each one has a wonderful sense of the world they exist in and the characters that inhabit those worlds and they play with tropes and themes in ways that I found interesting. Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Most of these authors have other books outside of these series that are also wonderful (you might see some of them in the other reclists that I am going to post). And these are just a handful of examples, there are so many fabulous books by and about people who are trans.
What are some of your favorite series by trans authors? Are there any I should give a try?
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White

Also on the podcast recently (link in pinned post)
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
Miles is hiding from everything. (While still living in the city of his birth lol. I don't think you tried all that hard, buddy) When a poisoned man dies in his hospital and begs Miles to solve his murder, Miles must accept the help of a handsome stranger. He risks losing everything he's built for himself.
Together, Miles and Tristan set out to solve the intertwining mysteries of murder, malady, and missing souls. Miles must face the past he’s run away from in order to discover the truth, about himself, his family, and about the country that he loves.
I really liked this one! I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.
More like this:
The Spiritwalker trilogy by Kate Elliott
Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh

I got stuck halfway through Cat's Cradle because Warhead was so grim and unpleasant. Eventually it occurred to me that I could just...skip it. So I read Witchmark this evening, and that was much more enjoyable! No longer stuck, ready to read more VNAs!
Best description of TARDIS materialization -> "Its mathematical anchors pulling free of the nexus point, the TARDIS threw an algebraic lifeline into the vortex. It looped wildly and then caught. As the equations hardened into reality, the real world interface was inserted into a new locale."
And this bit!!! -> "The Doctor ran his fingers lightly over the console of his restored TARDIS. The TARDIS ran her console over the fingers of her restored Doctor." AAAAAAAH my adorable little eldritch soulmate creatures!

September was a good month for reading ! I've already started on my first October book, Black Leopard Red Wolf. I can tell you right now it's unlike anything I've read before, is dark as heck, and I'm loving it.
I've got three books under my belt for the 23for23 challenge so far, here's to twenty more. 📚🏳️‍🌈👏

There's something very satisfying about sitting down to read a series that's complete, ready and waiting for you to crack open and devour it. Finishing a series also requires readers to have supported each book along the way as they came out. Well, these duologies, trilogies, and series by authors of color are finished, available to be read entire. We've previously reviewed every entry on this list and included links to those thoughts for anyone who wants a bit more detail. While it's entirely possible that these authors may publish associated stories in the future (either sequels or just set in the same story universe), what's available now feels complete. Each entry includes the synopsis from the first book in the series.
Full post at link, book titles in tags.

Review of Witchmark by C.L. Polk - 4 🌟
This is an alternative history with hidden magic type of book. I really liked the atmosphere and the dual ways that magic was treated in societies. It had a nice little mystery and gave me a ship to care about, so really this was set up to be a book I was going to really love. For the most part I did really enjoy it.
To be clear, I have strong feelings about characters, and I loathed Grace. Did I knock an entire star off this book because of her? Yes, yes I did. Based on information about the macroplot from my best friend, I chose to view this as a standalone as my hatred of Grace (who is the main character of the next book) was stronger than any of my lingering questions.
Even with that all said, the actual main characters of Miles and Tristan were *chefs kiss* and I feel like this is one of those books that I'll end up rereading on a at least semi-regular basis. (This has proven correct and I've read it 3 times in 3 years)
Even though I'm not a fan of first person narration, I liked Polk's writing enough that I'm interested to check out other things that she publishes.
Content Warnings
Graphic: Toxic relationship
Moderate: Blood, Body horror, Cancer, Confinement, Death, Emotional abuse, Forced institutionalization, Genocide, Medical content, and Xenophobia
Minor: Suicidal thoughts
Thank you!!
