Cuties and Questions
by WiseDawn13 (@wisedawn13)
T, 6k, Wangxian
Summary: “Suibian?” a deep voice says suddenly, catching his attention. Wei Ying opens his eyes to look at who approached and promptly finds himself without breath at the sight of the man in front of him. After all these years he shouldn’t recognize him so easily, but Wei Ying would never be able to forget those eyes. “Oh!” Wen Ning squeaks. “You are familiar with Suibian?” Wei Ying watches as Lan Zhan nods to Wen Ning. “I am. Are you the creator of Yiling Cuties?” “Ah? Oh, no. No, that would be him,” Wen Ning replies, somewhat flustered. It takes far too long for Wei Ying to realize that Wen Ning just diverted Lan Zhan’s attention to him because suddenly those golden brown eyes are staring directly into his soul and it hurts more than he would have expected. OR Wei Ying and Lan Zhan lost touch when Wei Ying's family moved away when they were kids. Wei Ying moves back to his hometown years later, meeting the man he once knew as his best friend. Kay's comments: I am so weak for modern AUs where Wei Wuxian's parents live! i wish more authors were brave enough to not kill Wei Wuxian's parents in a modern AU. This story was extremely fluffly with only minimal angst. In which Wangxian are childhood friends who find each other again and then immediately go all in, as they would <3 I really loved the idea of Wei Wuxian making custom plushies and pet clothes, very cute!
pov wei wuxian, modern setting, modern no powers, childhood friends, friends to lovers, getting together, reunions, lan wangji is a confident gay, cangse sanren and wei changze live, light angst, happy ending, fluff

#lanuary2024 Day 23: Lan Wangji's Birthday
Lan Zhan feels raw.
Usually, he has his weekends to decompress to avoid spiralling into either a meltdown or, worse, burnout. Unfortunately, this past weekend was filled with unmissable family events. Having Wei Ying with him helped.
But it wasn't enough; it merely delayed the inevitable.
He was doing okay getting by until work today. It's his birthday so the office decided to throw him a little party and so many people kept talking to him.
All he wanted was to come home and curl up in his husband's arms.
As Lan Zhan turns the key to their apartment he can feel the onset of a meltdown coming. He's standing on the edge and it won't take much to push him over.
He takes a slow, grounding breath, opens the door, and freezes.
The main lights are off and the apartment is instead lit by soft lamps. It's not too dark that he can't see but it's not harsh. He wants to cry.
He doesn't know how long he stands in the doorway but at some point, Wei Ying comes up and gently guides him in.
Wei Ying wordlessly takes his bag and sets it aside before he works on removing Lan Zhan's outer layers and shoes. Once those are put away, Wei Ying begins to slowly remove Lan Zhan's clothes before silently helping him into his softest loungewear.
It becomes easier to breathe.
Wei Ying meets his gaze with a soft smile. "Do you want a hug?"
Unable to reply, he nods.
Wei Ying wraps his arms around him and squeezes tight. Lan Zhan melts into him. He loves his husband so very much.
Some time later, Wei Ying pulls back to press a kiss to his lips.
"Happy birthday, my love," he whispers, letting his hands run up into Lan Zhan's hair to give his head a massage. Lan Zhan closes his eyes and leans into his touch, tension gradually leaving him with every press and tug of Wei Ying's hands.
By the time Wei Ying pulls his hands back Lan Zhan feels a hundred times better than he did when he entered their home. He lets out a sigh and opens his eyes to see Wei Ying staring at him with so much adoration it takes his breath away.
Unable to form the words, Lan Zhan kisses him and means 'I love you' and 'I adore you' and 'I don't deserve you but I'm so thankful to have you in my life.' He knows Wei Ying understands.
"Here," Wei Ying murmurs. Gently, he places Lan Zhan's noise-cancelling headphones on him.
Wei Ying turns them on and starts playing Lan Zhan's favourite Classical Chinese playlist on low. Lan Zhan hums in pleasure and follows Wei Ying as he gently tugs him over to the dining table. Lan Zhan sits as instructed and watches as Wei Ying serves him his favourite meals.
Lan Zhan is so overwhelmed with love for Wei Ying. He feels his eyes starting to water as Wei Ying puts Lan Zhan's plate down in front of him while pressing a soft kiss to the top of his head.
Wei Ying sits down and they eat in silence.
Lan Zhan is so thankful for Wei Ying thinking to put his headphones on him. As much as he adores Wei Ying talking over a meal, he knows he wouldn't have been able to handle all the sounds that come from eating. His husband knows him so well, sometimes better than even himself.
And, of course, he knows Wei Ying just as well. It's just wild to think about someone knowing him so deeply and truly as Wei Ying does. If someone told Lan Zhan when he was a teen that he'd be this close to someone (in every sense of the term) he wouldn't have believed them.
He was always so solitary and never certain on how to even attempt to get closer to someone. It was too daunting and confusing.
And then he met Wei Ying.
Wei Ying came crashing into his life in a swirl of light and laughter and joy and Lan Zhan cracked open.
Wei Ying always made an effort to reach out to Lan Zhan (even in the early days when Lan Zhan was too scared and overwhelmed by the enigma that is Wei Ying) and slowly, Lan Zhan began to understand what it meant to be wanted and treasured. Wei Ying enjoyed his company.
Over time, Lan Zhan grew more comfortable around Wei Ying. He began to feel settled when he was with him. Wei Ying became his safe space. Lan Zhan grew comfortable with all kinds of physical touch and making eye contact with him and Wei Ying always respected his boundaries.
It was inevitable that they would fall into each other, really. Neither of them knew it at the start, but others saw it (they heard the speeches at their wedding). Their love was something so real and natural that it only made sense. He can't imagine his life without Wei Ying.
After they finish eating, Wei Ying takes Lan Zhan's plate away before he has the chance to try to clean it himself and then he leads him into the livingroom where his yoga mat is set up with a pillow. Wei Ying gestures to it with a raised eyebrow in question.
Lan Zhan feels like his heart is too big for his chest. He nods and Wei Ying smiles softly. Lan Zhan watches Wei Ying wander off to grab the weighted blanket and then he lays down on his stomach on the mat. Wei Ying places the weighted blanket folded on his upper back.
He feels himself finally relax, the weight condensed enough to quite literally squeeze the tension out of him. There are so few ways that Lan Zhan can ever truly relax (especially his back) and this is one of them. The only other option is to have his back against Wei Ying.
Lan Zhan closes his eyes and lets out a long sigh.
He drifts.
An indeterminate amount of time later, he finally feels human again. He sucks in a deep breath, feeling the way his ribs expand and contract, and then pushes up, letting the blanket fall to the side.
He sits back on his heels and removes the headphones.
"Feeling better?" Wei Ying asks.
Lan Zhan turns to find him curled up on the couch, book in hand, a soft expression on his face.
"Mn. Much better," Lan Zhan replies.
"I'm glad." Wei Ying pats the couch beside him.
With a smile, Lan Zhan makes his way over and sits beside Wei Ying. They fold into each other, cuddling up close. "Thank you, my love."
Wei Ying sighs happily. "Anything for you, Lan Zhan. It's the least I could do, especially on your birthday!"
Lan Zhan hums and kisses him.
"So, Birthday Boy, shall we watch a few more episodes of your comfort show while we eat cake and cuddle?"
Lan Zhan hugs Wei Ying a little tighter. "That sounds perfect."
And so they do just that. Wei Ying ends up feeding them both while they watch the show.
It's truly the best, most perfect birthday he could have ever asked for.

#xiantober Day 17: Crowxian
Lan Zhan's new neighbour is annoying.
He is also alarmingly beautiful.
His new neighbour—Wei Ying—laughs often, talks a lot, and attracts crows to his house.
All in all, he's had worse neighbours.
Wei Ying treats the crows with kindness.
Lan Zhan often watches when Wei Ying goes out into his yard to talk to the crows. It's sweet to see, honestly, if a bit odd. He speaks to them as if they understand him—as if they respond.
It's not too long until a crow wanders over to Lan Zhan's yard one day when he's outside.
The crow eyes him warily from a distance, tilting its head as it sizes him up.
He stares at it calmly until it flies away.
Lan Zhan puts out a bowl of peanuts after that.
As the days pass, the crows visit him more and more. They gradually become comfortable around him.
They no longer flee if he moves at all.
But they don't get close enough to touch. Not like with Wei Ying.
He doesn't know why that hurts as much as it does.
So, he starts talking to the birds like Wei Ying does. He finds they make lovely little listeners.
He tells them about his day, talking about work and the incompetent coworker who never leaves him alone.
He tells them stories of his childhood and the dreams he used to have.
The birds listen.
As time passes, he gradually becomes closer to Wei Ying too.
Wei Ying noticed him with the crows one day and smiled wide before starting a conversation that Lan Zhan quickly found himself wanting to never end.
They talked more and spent more time together.
Eventually, Lan Zhan found himself quite fond of Wei Ying.
He's never expected to gain feelings like this, but he finds he does not mind. Wei Ying is, after all, wonderful.
It makes sense.
After he realizes how he feels he starts talking to the crows more about Wei Ying.
Then one day, Lan Zhan has an awful day at work.
Truly a horrible day.
Normally, at times like this, he would return home, listen to music, and run on his treadmill.
He's startled when he returns home but finds himself not at his front door, but rather, at Wei Ying's. His hand raised to knock before he even realized it.
There's no response when he knocks aside from a few crows cawing and flying off. He lets out a sigh. Wei Ying must not be home.
Frustrated, Lan Zhan walks home and changes into workout clothes. He's just pulling up his playlist when there's a tap at the window.
A crow.
One he doesn't recognize.
It's slightly larger than the birds he's used to seeing.
He stares at it and it stares back.
Then it taps the window again before making a motion with its head that almost looks like it telling him to open the window.
He does.
The crow caws once before hopping down on the floor. There are no other crows around, just this one.
Odd.
He continues to stare at the bird as it wanders around the space curiously, eyeing everything in the room. Lan Zhan isn't quite sure what's happening.
He's still frustrated and on edge, so he sighs. "Apologies, but I was just about to listen to music and run. I had a bad day at work." He turns back to his phone but just before he presses play on the music the bird caws twice.
Lan Zhan looks and sees the bird hopping over.
It stops right beside him and pushes its head against his leg. He sucks in a breath.
Why is this bird touching him? None of the others ever did.
He watches as it nuzzles against him. Shocked, he slowly sits on the ground. His shock only grows when it hops onto his leg.
It stares at him patiently.
"Do you want me to tell you about my day?" he asks helplessly.
To his surprise, it lets out another caw, its head moving in what could almost be mistaken as a nod.
"Alright."
He tells the crow about his day, sparing no detail.
He lets out his frustrations and the crow listens intently. At one point it nudges its head under his hand and he starts to idly pet the bird.
He tells the bird everything and then he tells it how he had wished to talk to Wei Ying about it all, but he wasn't home.
The crow chitters, pressing more firmly into his hand before it hops off him and moves away. He mourns the loss of comfort but lets the bird leave.
Only, it doesn't leave. It stops after a few hops and glances back at him almost shyly. It chitters once more and then—
And then suddenly there's not a bird there anymore.
Suddenly Wei Ying is standing there with his back to him.
Lan Zhan blinks. "Wei Ying?"
Wei Ying slowly turns around to face him, laughing awkwardly as he scratches the back of his neck. "Hey, Lan Zhan."
"What?"
"So... I'm a crow. Or, well, crow shifter to be exact. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to deceive you! That's why I never came around here in crow form before, but my buddies found me saying you showed up at my house looking down so I um... Well, I flew back to see you."
That's... A lot to process. But Lan Zhan only says, "Why did you not shift back and knock on my door instead?"
Wei Ying freezes. "Oh. Huh... I guess I could have done that, eh? Hah! Hindsight and all that."
Lan Zhan hums. "So, you can understand the crows?"
"Yep!"
"And how much do they understand and tell you? About what I tell them?"
Wei Ying's face immediately flushes a rosy colour. So, a lot then. Great.
"I see... I apologize. I did not wish to make you uncomfortable. If I had known I would not have—"
"NO!" Wei Ying yells.
"I mean no, don't apologize. I liked it. I like you too, you know? I just... Well, I didn't know how to go about telling you about that and the whole crow shifter thing."
Lan Zhan stares, mind whirling with all this new information. "You like me."
Wei Ying nods aggressively.
In a heartbeat, Lan Zhan is across the room and he's hugging Wei Ying. Wei Ying lets out a surprised squawk before he quickly hugs back.
"Can I kiss you?" Lan Zhan asks in a whisper.
"Yes," Wei Ying breathes.
And then they're kissing. Slow and sweet.
~
A week later, Lan Zhan comes home to find Wei Ying milling about in his kitchen. "Wei Ying."
"Hm?"
"Su She has been complaining all week about how he's being constantly accosted by crows."
Wei Ying doesn't look up from what's he doing. "Odd."
"Mn..." Lan Zhan agrees skeptically. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"
Wei Ying scoffs in indignation. "He must have just pissed off some crows, you know how they hold grudges. Serves that incompetent asshole right though."
Lan Zhan smiles as he hugs Wei Ying from behind and rests his chin on his shoulder. "You can tell the crows they can leave him be now. He was fired today."
Wei Ying laughs, leaning back against him. "Good."
"Mn."

#xiantober Day 21: Ghost Ladies
There are three ladies.
Wei Wuxian found them one day and communicated with them to see how he could help them move on.
None of them desire to move on yet, they all long to stay by his side. They want to feel safe. They want to feel loved.
All three of them went through their too-short lives, longing for someone to love them and care for them. Their families praised their brothers and all but ignored them.
Wei Wuxian saw their pain and welcomed them easily.
So, they walk with him.
The three ladies stay by his side, chittering away with each other and him. He makes sure to give them attention when they desire it and physical affection when they want. He cares for them deeply.
They are beautiful women taken from the world too soon, he mourns them.
Wei Wuxian wishes he could have known them in life.
The ladies often gossip about anything and everything. Wei Wuxian gladly joins them as he drinks wine. They cuddle up to him, resting their heads in his lap as he caresses their hair softly.
It helps him too.
Wei Wuxian has always been a tactile person. He thrives on physical touch and affection, throwing himself at his friends. Lan Wangji was the person he longed to touch most but also the one he could touch least. Lan Wangji doesn't like touch.
It's different now.
Now, after everything that's happened, Wei Wuxian can't touch people like he used to. He doesn't want to risk them knowing. He can't risk them finding out just how much of him has changed—just how much of him is /gone/.
He misses the easy touching he had with many people.
These ladies help him just as much as he helps them.
The gentle pressure of them against him. The slide of their hair against his palm. It soothes him.
Sometimes, they sing to him when his facade cracks a little too much and they see the pain and sadness beneath.
They sing soft songs to him.
And on days when he's feeling better, they listen to him talk. He tells them all about Lan Wangji. He tells them of how they met, how he teased him and wanted to be his friend. He shares the story of the waterborne abyss and xuanwu of slaughter.
He happily shares his memories of Lan Wangji with his ladies and they listen.
And they tease.
They look at him with cheeky grins and whisper about how in love he must be.
He sighs as he stares out the window, wind blowing his hair. He is, isn't he?
He's in love.
The thought settles in him like it was always there, just waiting to be acknowledged. Waiting to be given a name.
Love.
The ladies watch as he smiles to himself, thinking about how Lan Wangji's hair shifts in the wind.
He loves Lan Wangji. He's in love with Lan Wangji.
And nothing can come of it.
Lan Wangji can't know what Wei Wuxian has done. Not yet, at least. Maybe someday. Maybe, if things change, Wei Wuxian can allow himself to be selfish. Maybe, if things were different, Wei Wuxian could let Lan Wangji in.
He doesn't want to hurt Lan Wangji. He doesn't want to drag him down.
It's all such a complicated mess and Wei Wuxian, unfortunately, can't worry about that right now. But he loves Lan Wangji, and that will never change.
He hopes, someday, he can spend time with him again.
For now, Wei Wuxian has the ladies. Until they are ready to move on.
And one day, Lan Wangji walks by the inn he's drinking at. He isn't the one who notices him, but one of the ladies. She tells him, excited, that the one he loves is below. He laughs to himself at that.
They've never seen Lan Wangji before but they know him so easily purely from how much he has talked of him and described him. So silly.
Wei Wuxian asks the girls to grab some flowers so he can shower Lan Wangji with them, not willing to pass up the opportunity.
They do so with glee. Together, they shower Lan Wangji in flowers and petals until one final flower floats down from where Wei Wuxian is seated and Lan Wangji's gaze lifts to meet his.
Wei Wuxian smiles.
Maybe someday.
Maybe someday he can have more.

#xiantober Day 19: Royalxian
On the evening before Wei Ying's 23rd birthday, his parents sit him down to tell him that a marriage alliance has been formed between their kingdom and Gusu. Wei Ying is to marry the second prince whom he will meet at his birthday ball tomorrow.
On the evening before Wei Ying's 23rd birthday, he sneaks out of the palace.
Wei Ying loves his parents and he loves his kingdom, he knows his duty and will do it. But Wei Ying is also scared.
Throughout his life, he's snuck out many times.
He wears a simple disguise and goes into town to mingle among the people, looking at shops and drinking good wine.
His favourite place to go is a little inlet beach where a large tree grows. He will sit at the base of the tree or up on a branch and think.
When he arrives there this evening he finds that someone has already beat him there. They are seated at the bottom of his favourite tree and looking up at the darkening sky.
Wei Ying has been here many times and has never crossed paths with another person here before.
As he walks closer he gets a better view of the person. Dark, smooth hair in a long braid flows down their back with chunks to frame their beautiful face. They are wearing simple clothes and their eyes seem filled with a distant sadness, a longing.
Wei Ying walks closer.
When they turn to look at him his breath hitches in his chest, they have the most stunning eyes he's ever seen.
Wei Ying smiles. "Mind if I join you?"
They study him a moment before gesturing to the ground nearby. Wei Ying sits near them and leans against the tree.
"I come here when there's a lot on my mind and I want a calm place to just think," Wei Ying admits quietly as he looks out over the water.
"I can understand why you would, it is beautiful here," they reply in a smooth, deep voice.
Wei Ying hums in agreement.
They sit in companionable silence for a while as the sky darkens further and the first stars come out.
"Do you ever wish your life was different?" Wei Ying whispers suddenly.
"Sometimes," the stranger admits. "I do not dislike my life, but I sometimes wish..." they trail off.
"That you had more control?" Wei Ying supplies.
"Mn. I suppose it is a part of life for one to feel helpless in their circumstances."
Wei Ying laughs quietly as he idly plays with a blade of grass. "Doesn't make it any easier."
"No," they agree. "It doesn't."
Wei Ying watches as the blade of grass floats off on a breeze. "What brought you out here this fine evening?"
The stranger is silent for a moment. "My family has come to visit town for me to meet my betrothed," they admit. "I was feeling overwhelmed and found this place."
"It's a good place," Wei Ying says.
"It is."
"Are you worried about meeting your betrothed?"
The stranger shifts, their hand brushing lightly over the grass. "I suppose I am worried, but I do not believe it to be in the way most would expect."
Wei Ying hums in question.
"I have a duty to uphold to my family and this marriage is highly beneficial. I have heard many a rumour of my betrothed, they are said to be fiercely beautiful and intelligent as well as endlessly kind and charming. I fear that I will be unappealing to him in comparison."
Wei Ying sucks in a sharp breath. "I may not know you or who your betrothed is, but I can guarantee that your betrothed will not find you unappealing or uninteresting. Besides, if he does then he is undeserving of you."
That causes the stranger to huff a quiet laugh.
"You are correct," they say. "You do not know me." There is a hint of a teasing lilt to the way they say it. Wei Ying laughs, loud and free. "What brought you here this evening?"
Wei Ying settles and watches as the moon peaks out over the horizon.
"Same as you, really. I was told I am to be betrothed and will be meeting them tomorrow. I'm fairly certain my parents waited until the last minute before telling me so I didn't fret over it," he laughs. "It was expected to happen someday, though. I'm just..."
"Scared?"
"Yeah."
The stranger hums in understanding and Wei Ying is struck by the fact that they really, truly understand where he's coming from.
They lapse into a comfortable silence, leaning against the same tree as the moon rises into the sky.
They stay like that for a small eternity.
Then, the stranger stands and turns to Wei Ying. "It was a pleasure to meet you, I wish you all the best with your betrothal. I must return now. Have a pleasant evening."
Wei Ying smiles rather forlornly as he realizes he will never again see this lovely stranger. "You as well."
With that, they leave and Wei Ying is left alone under the night sky. He leaves not long after that, sneaking back into the palace before crawling into bed and sleeping deeply.
The next day is a bit of a chaotic mess as people run about doing last-minute tasks for the ball.
Wei Ying wanders the hall, wondering after the stranger, hoping they are happy. His parents find him staring out of a window shortly before he is meant to get ready and they usher him back to his quarters.
Hours later, he is standing outside the ballroom, waiting to enter.
He takes a breath before making his entrance and all eyes turn to him. The birthday boy. The crown prince. He smiles and greets people as he moves across the room to where his parents are.
Shortly after that, the second prince of Gusu is introduced.
Wei Ying turns to look at who his betrothed is and finds his world come to a standstill.
There, entering the hall in a regal white and blue outfit, is the stranger he met last night under the tree. Wei Ying's heart pounds wildly in his chest as they lock eyes across the room.
He could laugh.
He could cry.
Wei Ying moves and they meet in the middle of the room.
"Hi," Wei Ying whispers with a grin.
"Hello," the second prince says warmly.
"So... I suppose proper introductions are warranted."
"Mn. It would make married life much easier."
Wei Ying laughs. "So it would. I'm Wei Ying, crown prince of Yiling." He bows formally but carries a teasing smirk on his lips.
"I am Lan Zhan, second prince of Gusu." He bows formally as well. Very proper.
"Nice to meet you, Lan Zhan," Wei Ying says, meaning it.
He watches in delight as Lan Zhan's mouth ticks up into the smallest, softest smile. "Nice to meet you, Wei Ying."

#xiantober Day 1: Dadxian
"Baba! Baba!"
Wei Ying smiles as he watches his son run toward him, tiny backpack swinging wildly as he goes. "Hey, little radish! How was your da—oof!"
The rest of his words (and a little bit of his breath) are knocked out of him as A-Yuan jumps.
Thankfully, used to A-Yuan's tendency to launch himself, Wei Ying catches him easily and brings him up to rest on his hip.
"Baba! Can we get a rabbit?"
Wei Ying blinks. "What?"
A-Yuan squirms in his arms. "We should get a rabbit! We learned about them today!"
"I see," Wei Ying says, nodding his head. "I can't agree to that right now, bud. We will need to do research before we can decide on that."
A-Yuan's eyes widen as he pouts at him. "Pleeeaaaaseeee?"
Wei Ying laughs and pokes A-Yuan's cheek. "We can't get one yet."
"But, if you eat all your dinner tonight, including your veggies, I will look into us taking a trip to a place that sells rabbits this weekend. Only to look and learn! No buying yet. Deal?"
A-Yuan nods his head vigorously. "Yes! Yes! I'll be good, let's go!"
~
Turns out, there's a specialty rabbit shop not too far from their apartment. So, A-Yuan having upheld his end of the deal, the pair find themselves outside the shop on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
"Baba! Let's gooooo!" A-Yuan whines, pulling Wei Ying's arm.
"Ah, ah. Hold up a second there, little radish. What are we here for?"
A-Yuan stops pulling and looks at him with a serious face. "Looking and learning."
"Good. And what aren't we here for?"
With a forlorn sigh, A-Yuan replies, "Buying."
Wei Ying chuckles. "Good. Let's go."
They enter the shop and find a quiet, cozy interior with all sorts of rabbit-related items. It's quite cute. A-Yuan wanders off to look at toys while Wei Ying looks over various hutches.
"Good afternoon," a deep, smooth voice says. "May I help you?"
"Yeah, I—oh," Wei Ying falters as his breath is stolen from him by the sight of the most beautiful man he's ever had the pleasure of seeing. He realizes after a moment that he is staring quite dumbly and rudely. "Um, ah sorry. Yes, my son is interested in getting a rabbit."
Wei Ying gestures to where A-Yuan appears to be weighing two different rabbit toys in his tiny hands. The man looks over and hums in acknowledgement before returning to meet Wei Ying's gaze. "We're here today to learn and look before we decide on getting a rabbit."
The man nods. "That is very wise. I can answer any questions you have, plus we have a brochure that contains links to helpful websites."
"Ahh, that'd be great! Thanks. I'm Wei Ying, by the way. And you are?"
"Lan Zhan," he replies, pointing to the name tag on his shirt.
Ah...
Well! Can't blame Wei Ying for not noticing that when he has a face like that. With a slightly awkward laugh Wei Ying nods. "Right. Well, thanks Lan Zhan. I'm a complete rabbit virgin so I'm trusting you to take good care of me." He smiles wide to cover the internal cringe.
Why did he say it like that? Sure, the man is beautiful and stunning, and sure, he wouldn't say no if he was asked out on a date, but the man is working! Being flirted with at work is the worst, Wei Ying knows firsthand from his years bartending just how sucky that is.
He's just about to apologize when he sees Lan Zhan's mouth tick up in the corners ever so slightly. "I promise to take good care of you," he says in a low voice. Then, almost as an afterthought, "Wei Ying."
Wei Ying feels his face warm with blush. "G-good."
"Would you and your son like to see the rabbits?"
Before Wei Ying can respond, the son in question all but screams "YES!" before rushing over to Wei Ying's side. "Yes, please! Rabbits, please!"
Wei Ying laughs brightly. "I think that's a yes."
"Mn," Lan Zhan replies warmly.
They follow Lan Zhan through the shop into a room at the back where there are a number of pens and hutches set up with rabbits. Beside him, A-Yuan gasps and grips his hand tightly."
"Baba," he whispers in awe. "Rabbits!"
Wei Ying chuckles softly, petting his head.
"You may look closer if you wish."
A-Yuan looks up at Wei Ying with wide eyes.
"Go ahead."
Slowly, A-Yuan lets go of Wei Ying's hand and waddles over to the closest pen and stares at the rabbits within with wide-eyed wonder.
"I love them," A-Yuan breathes.
Wei Ying shares a look with Lan Zhan before walking over and crouching down next to A-Yuan. "They're definitely cute, that's for sure."
"Would you like to hold one?" Lan Zhan asks.
A-Yuan whips around so fast that Wei Ying gets whacked in the face with his hair. "I'm allowed!?"
Lan Zhan nods.
A-Yuan, much to Lan Zhan's surprise as well as Wei Ying's, runs up and launches at Lan Zhan to hug him. Surprisingly, Lan Zhan reacts quickly and catches A-Yuan. Wei Ying's shocked expression meets Lan Zhan's and something soft passes between them.
"A-Yuan, you shouldn't launch yourself at just anyone!"
Sheepishly, A-Yuan pulls back. "Sorry, bunny gege."
Lan Zhan shifts to tell A-Yuan something but Wei Ying gets distracted by the sight of Lan Zhan's ears, dusted with a rosy blush. Cute.
He realizes Lan Zhan is looking at him again. "Oh, is A-Yuan going to hold a rabbit?"
"Mn. Would you like to as well?"
Wei Ying smiles. "Sure! Just teach me how."
Lan Zhan nods. "You are in good hands, as I said."
Wei Ying notices his ears are a darker shade now.
Lan Zhan directs them to sit before going off to grab two rabbits. He comes back with them held in his arms, against his chest. Carefully, he deposits one on Wei Ying's lap and the other on A-Yuan's as he instructs them on what to do.
Then, they are holding rabbits.
It's so much nicer than Wei Ying expected it would be. They are quiet and soft and warm. The rabbit just melted right into him. Gently, he runs a hand over its fur to pet as Lan Zhan showed.
"Baba," A-Yuan says. "Baba, I'm holding a rabbit!"
Wei Ying looks at his son.
"Sure are, radish. You're doing great!"
A-Yuan beams at him, tiny hand petting the rabbit in his lap.
"Rabbits can be given radishes as treats sometimes," Lan Zhan states.
Wei Ying looks at him and laughs. "Hear that, radish? What if a rabbit tries to gobble you up?"
"Nooooo!" A-Yuan whines, giggling. "I'm not a real radish! I'm a boy!"
"No? Huh. I could have sworn you were," Wei Ying teases.
Lan Zhan huffs a quiet laugh at that and Wei Ying feels like his world tilted 5 degrees suddenly.
All too soon, the rabbits are placed back and the three of them walk back into the store proper. Lan Zhan hands Wei Ying a brochure and walks them to the exit.
"Thank you for this," Wei Ying says.
"Yes! Thank you bunny gege!"
"It was my pleasure," Lan Zhan replies softly.
They say their farewells with the promise of coming back to the store soon enough.
A-Yuan is practically vibrating with excitement the whole way home.
It's when A-Yuan is down for his name that Wei Ying takes a look at the brochure Lan Zhan handed him and smiles.
On the inside, there's a handwritten number.
It seems like more than just rabbits will be coming into Wei Ying's life soon.

#xiantober Day 2: Dragonxian
"I'm sorry sir, I really can't say what kind of egg that is. I've never seen anything like it."
Lan Zhan sighs, taking the egg back. "Thank you anyway."
Another dead end.
Carefully, he wraps the egg in a blanket, placing it back in his bag.
Lan Zhan never thought his quiet, mundane life would be upended by a mysterious egg, but here he is. His searches on the internet yielded nothing and no animal experts could figure out what species the egg belongs to.
All he knows is it's very clearly alive and was abandoned.
How does he know it was abandoned?
He woke up three days prior to the egg wrapped in a blanket and placed in a box on his doorstep. Why him? He has no clue. But Lan Zhan is determined to find out everything he can to best take care of whatever is inside this egg.
Unfortunately, he'd had to travel a number of hours to meet with the most recent specialist which means he has to stay in a hotel rather than his own bed. It is... not ideal, but he cannot risk driving all the way back so late.
Tomorrow he's going to see another "specialist."
He is iffy on this one. Where other professionals study specific genera and are quite scholarly, this person appears a bit eclectic if their shop website is anything to go by. The interest in mythology and the preternatural doesn't give Lan Zhan the highest of hopes.
But Lan Zhan is nothing if not thorough.
~
Yiling Laozu's Wonders and Oddities.
Lan Zhan stares at the sign of the shop before taking in the rest. Various crystals and animal skulls adorn the displays in the windows. He hopes the answers will be in there.
He enters.
The shop, while being filled with all manner of items, surprisingly feels quite cozy to Lan Zhan. He was afraid his senses would be accosted like they had been in other similar shops. He feels quite comfortable here.
It's when he's looking around that someone speaks to him.
"Ah, welcome! Is there anything specific you are looking for?"
Lan Zhan turns and feels as if he were struck by lightning. He is stunned by the beauty of the man smiling at him. It's almost otherworldly. Grey eyes shimmer in the light and he's sure they must be contacts.
The man tilts his head and Lan Zhan realizes he hasn't responded. He clears his throat. "Yes. I am here to speak with the owner over an egg that has recently come into my possession."
"You're talkin' to him!" The man winks, smile widening.
"Oh, my apologies, I hadn't realized—"
"Because I'm so young and handsome while most people in my field are old and withered?"
Lan Zhan feels his ears heat. While that is objectively true, that wasn't what he was going to say. "Shameless," he grits out.
That only makes the man laugh. "I'm Wei Ying."
"Lan Zhan."
Wei Ying's smile softens. "Lan Zhan... Beautiful name for a beautiful man." Before Lan Zhan can respond (by saying 'shameless' again) Wei Ying begins walking to the back of the store. "Come along!"
Lan Zhan does.
They enter a messy office where Wei Ying plops down on a chair.
Lan Zhan glances around the room before gently sitting on the couch across from Wei Ying.
"An egg, you say? Do you have it with you?"
"I do," Lan Zhan replies. He pulls the egg out of his bag and carefully unwraps it before holding it out to Wei Ying.
Wei Ying's eyes are wide.
Slowly, he reaches out. The moment his hand touches the egg he gasps. "Where did you get this?" Wei Ying asks, breathless, as he takes the egg into both hands and holds it close to his face.
"It was left on my doorstep four days ago. I do not know why or what it is."
"Dragon."
Lan Zhan blinks, sure he misheard. "Pardon?"
Wei Ying's grey eyes meet his. "This is a dragon egg." He laughs, the sound somewhat manic. He returns his gaze to the egg and brushes a hand over it. "I thought... I thought I was alone."
Confused and unmoored, Lan Zhan only stares.
He watches as Wei Ying rests his forehead against the egg and breathes shakily. "I thought I was the only one left," he whispers. "But here you are."
Lan Zhan feels something tighten in his chest. "Dragons are real?"
Wei Ying looks at him with wet eyes. "Yep."
"And you are..." he trails off.
Wei Ying nods. "A dragon, yeah. I never knew there were more than me, I thought I was the last one."
Lan Zhan's mind reels. "Can you prove it?" he blurts out suddenly.
Wei Ying blinks owlishly. "I don't have to prove anything to you."
"No. No, I apologize. I didn't mean to—"
"I'm teasing, sort of. If it were anyone else I wouldn't do this," Wei Ying says, standing up and handing the egg back.
"Why me?" Lan Zhan finds himself wondering.
Wei Ying shrugs. "Not sure, just feels right. You know?"
Lan Zhan nods. He does know.
Tenderly, he holds the egg to his chest as he watches Wei Ying closely.
"I can't change into my full form in here, but—" he closes his eyes and scrunches his nose until suddenly there's stunning red antlers on his head and a long tail behind him.
"Ta-da!" Wei Ying exclaims with a lopsided smile when he opens his eyes.
Lan Zhan is stunned. Not only has he met the most beautiful man today, but said man is also a dragon which means that dragons are actually real. Plus he has a dragon egg.
Big day.
Wei Ying shifts back to full human with ease and plops back into the chair. "So... you've got a dragon egg."
Lan Zhan nods. "I do."
"You don't know how to care for a dragon." It's not a question.
"I do not."
"And you were trusted with the care of the egg."
"I was."
Wei Ying stares at Lan Zhan silently for a beat. "Move in with me."
"Okay," Lan Zhan replies without thinking.
His shock must show because Wei Ying laughs lightly. "Are you sure? You don't have to."
Lan Zhan thinks it over carefully before deciding that yes, he is sure.
"I am," he replies. "It would be most wise for the dragon baby to be around another dragon, and I wish to learn how to care for a dragon as it is essentially my child now."
"We'll be co-parents," Wei Ying says with a smirk.
"Mn."
Lan Zhan secretly hopes to drop the 'co' someday.

That's right y'all, A-Yuan is matchmaking before even being a true part of this world 😌

Cuddle Conundrum
When wangxian started dating they became rather awkward and shy around eachother. It's a new addition to their dynamic and they're still learning to be fully comfortable with eachother.
WWX loves horror movies but he is unaware that his new boyfriend ALSO loves them.
It's a secret guilty pleasure of LWJ's that literally no one knows of. So, when Wwx starts asking to watch horror movies all the time together, lwj is rather pleased. What he is NOT pleased about is how often WWX will glance his way with a frown on his face during the movie.
And after? WWX seems kind of sad and dejected. LWJ isn't sure what he's doing wrong and it's starting to freak him out. So, he goes to his closest friend who isn't WWX: MM.
LWJ explains the situation and then MM laughs. She laughs! When she calms down, she explains.
"Bro, your boyfriend is totally trying to get you to seek out comfort in his arms by putting on scary movies! He's sad you aren't cuddling with him!"
LWJ blinks owlishly. "Why would he do that? He could cuddle me if he wanted to."
MM sighs. "Sure, he could," she acquiesces.
"But, he clearly is either uncertain about that or he just wants you to initiate it. Maybe both."
LWJ considers that, while WWX has always been very tactile, he has seemed less so since they started dating. LWJ hadn't thought to initiate it himself or that WWX wanted that.
He nods. "Very well. Is this a common tactic amongst the dating?"
MM laughs again. "Yeah, it is."
"I see. I shall remedy the situation. Thank you for the advice."
"Sure, sure. And thank you for the lunch!"
With that, LWJ returns home and promptly invites WWX over.
"Would you like to watch a movie tonight?" LWJ asks shortly after WWX arrives.
"Yeah, sounds good. What were you thinking? Action? Comedy? Fantasy?"
"Horror."
WWX shifts slightly. "Okay."
LWJ nods and selects a highly frightening film. That should suffice.
He waits about 15 minutes into the film before turning to WWX. "Wei Ying. I am frightened."
WWX pauses the movie and looks at him with a look of shocked concern. "You—what?"
"I am frightened," he replies simply.
"I... okay. Did you want to stop watching?"
LWJ shakes his head. "No, thank you. You enjoy the movie, I would not wish to deprive you of that. It would be acceptable if you protected me with your body so I may hide in your safe and comforting embrace."
WWX stares silently for a while before awkwardly lifting his arms.
LWJ wastes no time. He shifts forward and slots himself against his boyfriend, nuzzling into his warmth. WWX is tense but slowly he relaxes and lets his arms rest on LWJ, holding him close.
"Better?" WWX asks.
"Mn. You may play the movie."
WWX does.
After about 30 minutes, WWX asks, "You weren't really scared, were you?"
"No," LWJ admits. "I often watch horror movies by myself."
"Then, why?"
"You seemed sad after watching horror movies with me and MM told me you were likely hoping I would seek comfort in your arms."
"Ah..."
"Was she incorrect?"
WWX laughs quietly. "No, she was right."
"I see. Well, you could have asked me to cuddle. Or initiate it yourself. I had not realized this is what you wished to occur."
WWX hums. "True, I was just... ah, well. I felt awkward doing that."
LWJ nuzzles further against WWX. "You do not need to feel awkward about seeking physical intimacy from me, Wei Ying. We are dating. It is more expected now than ever before."
"True," WWX laughs. "But I thought you hated touch."
"Not from you. Never from you."
"Hush, you. I can't take such sweet words from such a sweet mouth."
LWJ smiles to himself. "You will have to get used to it."
"So it seems." LWJ can hear the smile in WWX's voice.
From then on, they are almost never not touching if they are in the same room.

AroAce WangXian
Childhood friends wangxian who suddenly are ripped apart for some reason or another and ultimately lose contact. LWJ, of course, is completely distraught. LXC sees this and feels for his didi. He not only lost his best friend but also the first person he ever loved.
LWJ spends years grappling with his grief and as time goes on, LXC starts to worry. His didi isn't going out and meeting anyone, his didi hasn't dated at all or even had any hookups. This is very strange and concerning to him (an allosexual/alloromantic polyamorous person)
Eventually, LXC starts to hint at LWJ to go out and meet people. Make friends and "maybe you'll meet someone you like." But LWJ is disinterested. LXC eventually starts bringing LWJ out with him and pointing out some people he thinks his didi might like, but nothing.
Finally, LXC can't stand seeing his little brother so hung up on a boy he never even had a relationship with years later and sets up a date for LWJ with MXY (who he met through NMJ's little brother)
LWJ apologies to MXY and says he is not interested in dating and turns him away.
Then, LWJ finds his brother looking at him with disappointment. LXC tells him that he can't keep being so hung up on WWX and he just needs to get over him and move on. LWJ blinks entirely confused. He then explains to his brother that that's not the problem.
He will always love WWX and carry that love with him, just as he carries his love for their mother with him. He may never see WWX again, but that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if he ever gets to be with him in a romantic or sexual way either. He loves him.
But his lack of interest in sex and dating isn't because of that. He is just on the asexual and aromantic spectrums. He is completely content to not be with anyone and genuinely can't see himself wanting to be with anyone but WWX if he had to be with someone.
LXC is shocked. He hadn't realized that was really a thing and feels bad that he kept pushing that on his didi. He apologizes and promises to research more about it and to be a better, more supportive brother.
Then, sometime later, wangxian meet again by chance.
They rekindle their friendship and gradually fall into an easy relationship. LWJ doesn't have to explain his feelings to WWX because WWX is the same way.
----------
Anyway, I might try and write out a fic for this some day. Aroace wangxian my beloved 🥺🖤
