controversial take from a brown girl but I kind of expect my kids to go through an ungrateful phase because I hope they won’t be too scared to give me attitude and I want that phase to end when they are older — not because I have guilted them into feeling ashamed of their life — but because they matured. I want them to know that of course I loved them and provided for them, I am their parent that’s my job. they don’t owe me respect out of guilt, I want them to give me respect because they love me. I honor my parents and my ancestors because I love them. however, there are also a lot of feelings of shame, guilt, and obligatory deference too that I don’t want my kids to feel. giving respect if part of love and I want to show my kids love in a way that teaches them that.

#likw obviously I don’t want my kids being rude to people and acting ridiculous #but I’ll never try and hit or intimidate my child just because I’m worried I’ll be embarrassed #I won’t hit or intimidate my kid period.#I don’t want my kids ungrateful forever but I think guilting them will only make them resentful or make them feel unworthy of a good life #I want my children to feel worthy of good things! I want to teach them that they are worthy #they don’t have to walk on their knees through the dessert for a thousand days yadda yadda u know #I feel like girls are especially taught suffering is love and sacrifice of love #and of course sometimes love involves sacrifice or suffering #but that’s not all love is!#it took me becoming an adult to learn that #and I would have genuinely phrased it that way if you asked me what love is as a kid I would have said it was sacrifice and suffering #but life doesn’t need to be like that #desi #desi culture

#when i first discovered the existence of ms marvel a few yrs ago i was ecstatic to learn there was a hero who was a pakistani muslim girl #i was so surprised there was smth out there about a character who was from exactly my demographic #but the more i looked into it i could see so much was written in that wasnt my experience at all #and when looking toward the show being made i felt like they were still not going to portray smth that was fully accurate #or that i could properly relate to #i don't care for superheroes or the mcu but ive never seen this kind of representation before #but i know that if i watch it im gonna have so many problems with it #idk what to do #just from looking through the tag the thing that stood out to me the most was the way her best friend is a white boy?#like i know very few families that would allow that. muslim desi families think white boys are the devil #i feel like this is gonna have a lot of great desi representation but not very good muslim rep #which is unsurprising bc who portrays muslims properly ever #literally no one #also ppl in the entertainment industry are never religious so they dont bother with those things bc it's not important to them personally #idk I'm just really tired of all the shitty rep and I just want something nice for once
