McDonald’s Day

McDonald’s Day falls on April 15, the anniversary day of when Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955. Most, if not all, people around the world know this name, we believe. It’s one of the world’s largest fast-food restaurant chains. Did you know that Ray Kroc was not the founder of McDonald’s? The founders were the McDonald brothers. The current corporation credits its founding to Ray Kroc. So, let’s celebrate this McDonald’s Day in honor of Kroc as well as the restaurant founders, the McDonald brothers.

HISTORY OF MCDONALD'S DAY

The very first McDonald’s restaurant was opened by New Hampshire brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald on May 15, 1940, in San Bernardino, California. The McDonald brothers started by serving slow-cooked barbecue, and the business took off quickly. They later found out that 80% of their sales were from hamburgers, so they closed it for three months. They then remodeled it as a self-service restaurant, where customers placed their orders at the windows. It is said that they simplified their menu to just nine: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, three flavors of soft drink, milk, coffee, potato chips, and pie.

The McDonald’s brothers developed the “Speedee Service System,” allowing them to prepare the food quickly. All their hamburgers contained ketchup, mustard, onions, and two pickles. Although this newly remodeled McDonald’s struggled at first, once the brothers replaced potato chips with french fries and introduced triple thick milkshakes, the business started to grow again. In the early 1950s, they saw their profits double. They then established several franchises in California and Arizona. Ray Kroc, a milkshake mixer salesman, visited them in 1954, wondering why McDonald’s would order eight of his multimixers.

Once Kroc knew about McDonald’s restaurant operation, he saw potential in it. He then bought the rights to franchise the brothers’ restaurant across the country. He opened his first McDonald’s franchised restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955. But, their relationship was contentious due to philosophies that differ on how to run the business. Kroc later purchased the company from the McDonald brothers in 1961. The brothers who lent their name to the business and were pioneers of the business concept gradually faded to the background. They kept their original San Bernardino restaurant until they were out of business eventually.

80. A mysterious letter

Yến carefully picked her way through the puddles that pooled on the concrete steps. Her purple converse were already damp, but she wanted to keep them from getting soaked.

She halted for a moment to shake off the black umbrella she’d borrowed from the newsroom, before stepping through the double doors in front of her. Warm air and the characteristic scents of steel, burnt rubber, ozone and people enveloped her.

Luckily, the train was on time and since it was the middle of the day there was a place for her to sit. She used her free hand to pull her ponytail tighter, glancing at her reflection in the window against the backdrop of never-ending night.

Checking the time on her phone, she leaned back in her seat. No rush.

Absentmindedly, she looked at the tattoo curving up the inside of her left underarm; -30- in black ink, flanked by flowers.

Yến had got the tattoo just the year before, while still in college. Her parents had been… displeased, to say the least.

But it had seemed so romantic to her, even important. She had wanted to use the old sign that indicated the end of a submitted article, to inscribe it on her own body as a way of showing her commitment to the values of truth and justice that she shared with the journalists who’d gone before her in the annals of history.

Of course, that was way before she had actually got her first job. Now, after months of reporting on cat exhibitions in Queens, petty conflicts between neighbours in Staten Island, the World’s biggest barbecue in Brooklyn and other odds and ends of community reporting that her colleagues happily pushed over to the youngest and greenest in their newsroom, her commitment to truth and justice looked more than a little ridiculous, even to herself.

This assignment was no exception. Her co-workers had laughed out loud when the letter had arrived. Written by cut-out pieces of text from newspapers and magazines, the message had been carefully taped together into what looked like a ransom letter from the opening scene of a second-rate detective series.

“Important info!” The letter read. “Bryant Park, W 42nd Street. Right lamp at entrance. Brown envelope. 14:00 hrs. Today.”

“Miss Nguyễn Thị Yến,” her editor James had said, with mock formality. “I’ve got a job for you.”

”Are you really going to send her?” Barbara had interjected. “What if it is dangerous?”

“Nah!” James had shaken his head. “It is most likely a marketing trick. Or nothing at all.” To Yến he continued. “But you can make a story about the hunt for it. Take some photos on the way, and describe the scenes for the readers. It will be a light fluff piece. Okay?”

Yến had nodded, of course. But before she left, Barbara had handed her some plastic gloves and a transparent ziplock bag.

“If it looks like a bomb, don’t touch it. And use the gloves, remember the anthrax scare.”

Now, well on her way, Yến felt a sting of concern, what if Barbara was right? But all her other colleagues had thought that it was just a joke, or some business looking for attention. James wouldn’t send her out alone if he had thought it was risky. She decided that she would use the gloves, anyway.

The rhythm of the swaying train, the hissing stops and starts, her early morning start, it all made her feel a bit sleepy. She closed her eyes, just for a moment.

”-30- has been traditionally used by journalists in North America to indicate the end of a story or article that is submitted for editing and typesetting. It is commonly employed when writing on deadline and sending bits of the story at a time, via telegraphy, teletype, electronic transmission, or paper copy, as a necessary way to indicate the end of the article.”

So says Wikipedia, and also adds the fascinating fact that no one knows where the term came from, but that it might have its roots in the American Civil War era.

HAVE A HEART

1916-1917

Have A Heart is a musical in two acts and three scenes by Jerome Kern with a book and lyrics by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse with additional music and lyrics by Schuyler Greene, James Kendis, Charles Bayha and Jerome Kern. It was originally produced by Henry W. Savage and staged by Edward Royce.

Although it did not play the Princess Theatre, it was one of five musicals known as ‘the Princess Musicals.’ At the opening night of the Bolton / Kern collaboration, Very Good Eddie, Kern introduced Bolton to his former collaborator Wodehouse. By the end of the evening, the three had agreed to work together. Their first full collaboration was Have a Heart.

The musical takes place in (fictional) Blueport, Rhode Island in the present (1917). Act I: Lingerie Room at Schoonmaker’s Department Store; Act II: Lounge of the Ocean View Hotel.

Estranged couple Ruddy and Peggy Schoonmaker still love each other, but he is involved with predatory Dolly Barbizon and she is being wooed by confidence man Captain Charles Owen, who is passing forged currency. On the eve of their divorce, Ruddy and Peggy run off together and hide out at the Ocean View Hotel in Rhode Island. Dolly, Owen, and others track them down, and through the quick thinking of the elevator boy Henry, the forger is exposed.

Rehearsals began during the first week in December 1916.

Have A Heart premiered in Atlantic City at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on December 28, 1916. It featured 40 beautiful girls - who could sing!

On New Year’s Day, the musical was at the Trent Theatre in Trenton NJ, followed by the Reading Academy of Music in PA (attended by Kern and Bolton), and a single night at the Playhouse in Wilmington DE.

The hit song was the second-act duet “You Said Something” for Ted and Lizzie. Kern himself preferred “And I Am All Alone,” sung by Ruddy and Peggy. The patter song “Napoleon” was recorded by its originator Billy B. Van.

“He was shorn off short, But was one good sport And I take after Nap!”

Have a Heart opened on Broadway at the Liberty Theatre (234 West 42nd Street) on January 11, 1917. It played 76 performances.

About the Venue: The Liberty was built in 1904 to present Rogers Brothers musicals. In 1933, it was made over as a movie theatre and continued this function into the 1980s. In 2000, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum was built on the site. Although the building's exterior is still standing, the interior is no longer in use as a theatre.

"’Have a Heart' never will astound anybody by its originality, but it moves with a swing that is not unlikely to carry it to success in a season when lively musical comedy is in demand. Now and then there is a bright line, and the authors have shown considerable skill in distributing the dullness. Just when it begins to be oppressive someone says something about love being the greatest thing in the world and the orchestra leader gets up and conducts a musical number.” ~ NEW YORK TRIBUNE

The show played its final performance on March 17, 1917 clocking 76 shows on Broadway. It immediately transferred to Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre.

In the two years following its Broadway opening, with a Company A and a Company B touring simultaneously, it played in no fewer than 36 states and five Canadian provinces.

Have A Heart returned to Atlantic City at The New Nixon Theatre (later known as The Globe Theatre) on the Boardwalk on April 9, 1917.

The Victor Light Opera recorded excerpts in 1930. The musical was revived in New York by Musicals Tonight in May 2004. In 2005, Comic Opera Guild released a complete cast recording. In 2016, it was produced by the Ohio Light Opera.

This is my review for the documentary "42nd Street Memories: The Rise And Fall Of America's Most Notorious Street".

Released in 2015 and directed by Calum Waddell, it's about New York's 42nd Street, located between 7th and 8th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, where rows of movie theaters across the street from each other offered screening of all the sleazy grindhouse and horror movies you enjoyed from that era.

Until the early 90's when it got shutdown and got Disneyfied and sanitized for your unpleasure.

You'll hear actors, directors, film distributors, producers, authors, film historians talking about their first hand experiences going to see movies on 42nd Street known also as "The Deuce".

People like Frank Hennenlotter, Richard W. Haines, Joe Dante, Larry Cohen, Matt Cimber, Veronica Hart, Debby Rochon, William Lustig, Buddy Giovinazzo, Tom Holland, Lloyd Kaufman, Greydon Clark and Jeff Lieberman.

Hey guys. Sooo we all know that I’m not consistent on here. But when I show up! You have to admit, that its good. Lol

So today I had a really good conversation within myself.

To paint a clear picture, I work over nights. Which is really important. I’ll be explained later on. So my work night starts at 20:30 hrs. And thats just prep time. I actually start work at 21:00. I’m a newly promoted person in charge. Im a (SUPERIOR!!!!)

In my profession. It takes a while to earn this status. Which at one point I had turn down. So… to make a bigger deal of my position. There’s tiers. 1-9 and I’m at 5. But when I started this security position, which is part time by the way. I entered at level 3. Which cave me a bit of an ego boost. I’ve been with this part time security organization for 7 years. I would have been a tier 6 but because I declined my position before I’m at tier 5. Which at the time. I have to say was very wise.

So from 21:00 until 05:00 hrs. My team and I are a presence. A deterrent as you will. Most of us professional and proficient. While others are clearly here to cash the checks and buy a house.

At 05:00hrs. I head home. By which I go to through public transit. The 4 or 3 train to Brooklyn. YEA!!! Brooklyn. A part of New York I’m never really in. Or care to be in. Its a part of New York that feels as if its just segregated. And there’s just no need to be apart of. I mean they are the part of the city that get hit with the storms first. Thus! Slowing it down over the rest of the city.

By the tome I get home its 06:00hrs. And I take a shower and brush my teeth. I have a personal belief that when you work in service. Helping demographics that are under privileged, there negative energy clings to you.

When I w home the bathroom is the first place I go. I undress myself and kick the clothes in a corner. And get in the tub. I wash with soap thats been infused with green tea sage and one other banisher. And once I’m wet I wash my face and brush my teeth in the shower. Because why not! Once I get dressed I don’t see the point. While tired, doing these grooming steps I could have do e while in the shower.

After doing those tedious things. I begin to chant to my spirits and call them to help me remove the energy I picked up. And I continue to do this procedure until I feel clean and almost see the negative energy in the suds going down the drain.

Once I finish, I get out the tub and immediately from the back I stand and spray in the direction of the drain with bleach. After that I leave the bathroom. Prep some tea and take multivitamins capsules. Head back into the bathroom and run the shower on cold. Until the bleach is gone.

This is all the things I do before I head to bed. Once I jump in my sweet cradle of rest. I knock out for a few hours. By this time its 08:00. Then I typically sleep for 7 hours. And I should be awake at 14:00hrs. And procrastinate for an hour. Then I go the gym and hype myself up to be a body builder. To only almost die from too much pre-workout. Lol.

Yes this is true it happens a little too often for my liking. But after going to the gym at 1600 i head back to house to shower again and do this routine all over again.

Sounds like a lot right! Well… it is. Usually my job allows me to be in a hotel. “Great right” but! There are stipulations to these. Such as distance and how long it takes you to get to work. Unfortunately, for me I don’t quality. It takes me only (30/1.45) min from new lots to 42nd street. And I’m less than 30 miles. Soooo…….. yup..!… I don’t qualify

Honestly, its actually a good thing that I’m not in a hotel because they reserve the right to check your room. And you cannot have people over which sucks because I would have slutted it up

So the whole point of this rant is to give you insight into my day! Im 3 weeks in and to myself, walking home from the gym I had to express to myself out loud. I’m……. Not……… happy!!!!

Recently I had my own very modern version of eat pray love. Where I went to Africa on the east cost. And I with a very well established team help liberate this 3rd world group of people. We pretty my educated them on various methods of self preservation. My hand in it was cooking and giving my love and life into the food. They were eating.

There! I learned I wasn’t happy either. But there I had time to burn. Burn in the sense I was working and getting paid very well and!!! And! I had tome to think! All of my basic needs were met and I truly was able to deeply self reflect.

My reflection told me I wasted time and parts of my life on things that don’t even belong to me. Which is the hate I had for my parents. The anger I had towards people who intentionally did me wrong.

So here! I caught myself falling back into the same behavior.

I’m not happy.

So! I might have to quit for the sake of my mental and emotional health. I’m not doing what feeds my soul. Which is art! Sex and poetry.
