Thinkin bout Sampo Koski rn as like. His character n what we get of him in honkai star rail and he fucking. He confuses me like. There has to be So Much more to him like
The general vibes of him and especially how other characters treat him is that of comic relief, a punching bag, a goof, just a slick conman causing trouble. It's genuinely difficult NOT to insult him n treat him badly with dialogue options and any time he's even mentioned March 7th hisses at him. He's literally a cryptid in belobog. He's a joke.
But. But. There's his light cone. It makes me insane. It contradicts all of that.
In it he's competent. He's badass. He's omnipotent. He's able to somehow know a sniper from however far away is locked on him and address them specifically.
And even like... in the entire plot of jarilo-vi he's spoken of like he's not much. He's a 4 star character. But he's practically as present as bronya and seele and Gepard and his involvement in the story is ASTRONOMICAL. He has a part in every major event. He's the one who drags the Trailblazers and bronya into the Underworld. He's the one who takes you to svarog, to the overworld again. He gets Natasha and saves you from svarog. He's the first character you ever meet on jarilo.
And he seems to just vanish before you confront cocolia. But no. Sampo is the one who has the last word and wraps up the entire mission on jarilo-vi. He fucking breaks the forth wall. Jarilo-vi both begins and ends with Sampo.
He calls himself shadowy comic relief yet he seemingly orchestrated everything. What is he. What the fuck is he doing. What else is up with him and when will we get more of him. I want to bite into him and tear him apart.

Kirana Putri Anggraini
A full-time registered nurse and the holder of the Snake Aegis. She is 25 years old and has lived in Bougainville for the past 5 years to work at Bougainville General. Kirana is of Indonesian (half-Javanese, half-Balinese) descent: born and raised in Jogjakarta before undertaking her bachelor's degree in Paris. She has since gained permanent residence in France.
Kirana is a sweet, kind, and motherly individual. She is empathetic and cares deeply for others: she will always extend a helping hand to those in need. Her family means more to her than anything in the world and she does her best to do right by them; even if it means pushing herself far too much.
Though it can be challenging to live and work in a town where everyone perceives you as... Different, she tries her best to not let it affect her. Even when it does, deep down... She is very humble, though whether it's genuine humility or a genuine fear of standing out remains to be seen.
But one thing everyone knows about her is her large appetite and love of food! She perceives food as an important part of culture and forming connections (which is a very fortunate common thread to have). So if she invites you for a coffee or lunch, be sure to say yes!

Clara De Vries
A struggling artist who performs at cafes and bars - and occasionally sidewalks – all over town. She is the holder of the Songbird Aegis; 24 years old and a new face in town. Originally from Amsterdam, she arrived in Bougainville with nothing but the clothes on her back (quite literally). She is desperate to put her past behind her and move on to greener pastures.
Clara wears her heart on her sleeve and is quick to give it away (which is often the cause of her troubles.) She craves affection and connection; but past experiences have given her a more pessimistic view on her chances of finding it. Yet still, she readily accepts it from anyone who offers: desperately.
She is deeply troubled; though what it is that troubles her or why, she will never say. Perhaps it is her money trouble, or trouble finding a safe place to sleep, or any combination of the two: she is often lost in her own thoughts; slightly scatterbrained and distracted. But she truly comes to life when she is singing and playing music.
Recently she learned of a full-ride music scholarship from Bougainvillea University. Perhaps it will finally help her turn her life around...

Natasha "Amber" Vasilieva
A park ranger and holder of the Tiger Aegis. She is 28 years old and is a military veteran of the Russian armed forces. She was discharged after being diagnosed with PTSD and Broca's Aphasia from a traumatic head injury while on active duty.
To aid in her recovery, she had moved to the quiet, peaceful town of Bougainville for a job at the Emilie Francoise Nature Reserve: away from large crowds and loud noises.
It has been several years since then. She was not as angry as she used to be; but living with her new disabilities still vexes her from to time to time. Amber is determined to get through her recovery as fast as she possibly can, but her progress is slow; a part of her fears that... She might never be the same person she was before.
Despite this, she remains stoic and unshaken on the outside. Amber is severe and intimidating, even when she doesn't mean to be. If she can just learn to talk again... Maybe she wouldn't be stuck twiddling her thumbs in the middle of nowhere.

Colette Le Gautier
A student at Bougainvillea University? Who knows. Colette is very evasive about what she does. 26 years old and the holder of the Cat Aegis, she has an eclectic set of skills in her resume; one of which being a top gymnast for the Bougainvillea University's gymnastics team.
Clever, quick-witted, and calculating; Colette uses her words carefully and purposefully. A social butterfly that fits into any social circle, but a recluse when it comes to her personal life. No one never really knows Colette.
There is something unnerving about her: a certain pressure that could put anyone on edge. Is it her striking beauty? Her demand for perfection? Her uncanny ability to make someone want to please her regardless? Or something else?
But one thing is certain: she looks out for no one but herself. So what is it does she hope to find in a small, quaint town like Bougainville?

Supporting Cast
Carter Bishop
Carter is one of the library assistants at the Bougainville University Library, and has quickly become a popular fixture there; despite having only started in the last couple of months. He appears to be in his late twenties, and speaks with an extremely upper class British accent. He speaks fluent French with little difficulty, and is diligent and dedicated in his work. He tends to keep to himself most of the time, but he is pleasant to interact with: personable and friendly, albeit with a typical British dry wit. He is quick to help anybody who needs it, and his aid has already saved more than a few last-minute studiers with their coursework!
Elias Wright
Elias is the foul-tempered, acerbic chef in the local bistro, having already made a name for himself thanks to his explosive temper and overwhelming presence. The only thing that exceeds his apparently endless reserves of rage is his skill for cooking; the food in the bistro has taken a notable turn for the better, though whether that's from his skill, his leadership or simply the fact that the other cooks are terrified of angering him with sub-par products remains to be seen. He appears to be of American descent, and speaks with a difficult to place southern-states accent, but does not seem keen on sharing details. In dealings with people out and about town, he is prickly, standoffish and suspicious, preferring his own company to that of others. If he isn't shouting, then he's at least wearing a heavy scowl most of the time.
Markus Reiland
Markus is the suave, charming, popular bartender at the Bougainville watering hole, and is known probably intimately by most women - and half of the men - in town. His easygoing, charming demeanour, easy smile and dulcet tones have charmed more than their fair share of customers in any number of ways, and it seems like he always has his finger on the pulse of recent happenings in town. To be expected from the bartender who can wink and smile a secret out of anybody! He is eminently flirtatious and effortlessly charming, always ready with a wink, a smile and a flirtatious joke to anybody who crosses his path. He's a skilled cocktail mixer, and his party trick is making a custom cocktail for his customer based solely on his impressions of them as a person; he rarely misses, which just goes to show how easily he can read people. Unusually for rural France, he speaks with a thick hybrid accent, using many Louisianan cadences mixed with what appears to be an Iberian Spanish accent.
Casey Price
Casey is the bubbly and friendly waiter at the local vegan cafe, almost always being found on the morning and lunch shift. He's a friendly and talkative fellow who often chatters his customer's ear off with an earnest and sincere personability that makes it difficult to resist the urge to fall into conversation with him. He's a passionate animal-lover, extolling the virtues of vegetarianism to anybody who asks, but he is not one to judge or evangelise if the subject has not come up naturally. His accent seems to be from the American continent, though whether north-States or southern-Canadian is a little hard to tell at times. He's a little dorky, often tripping over his words in his excitement to say them, and often talks about his dreams of one day becoming a vet, or working in conservation...if he can find the time and money to go to school for the qualifications, that is!

“Any choice is right as long as it’s willed” may be one of my favorite lines in the entirety of Patho Classic and I’m obsessed with looking at how Artemy perceives his autonomy within the framing of that quote
Replaying Artemy’s route I noticed that he has fewer dialogue options than Daniil or Clara, and overall seems to have the most conversations where the player is only afforded one dialogue option. Admittedly I was bothered by this because having returned from the Changeling route I was cracking my knuckles to analyze how Artemy feels like an outsider in town, how he could foreseeably reject his path just as Daniil or Clara—in the Changeling Route, Artemy is often likened to Daniil as an outsider, but that sentiment is far weaker in his own story than in Clara’s. I was vexed about it because that would’ve been interesting to explore, but I think it’s because in the Haruspex route we play as Artemy ascending to his role, that is the plot for us and for him. Everything the player does in his route to progress the game necessitates that we choose this “claiming my father’s duty” path, so that it feels strange to me from a character perspective to get to those final days and say “actually I want nothing to do with this” because while there are occasional dialogue options where Artemy expresses his hesitancy, he doesn’t have the same option to oppose his path like Daniil or Clara; he doesn’t get to have any vehement “actually fuck this town I don’t belong here or want to be here” options until the final days, which feels wildly dissonant considering it comes post-hole excursion and killing Oyun. It feels like the only way to leave Artemy’s beaten path is just not to play, which is why I see his route and way he perceives his autonomy as deeply linked to “When every step you take has been predicted, you are still free to either take it or not.”
I also feel that Artemy has the most concrete “sense of self” in comparison to Daniil and Clara, though of course he can assume different characterizations depending on how one roleplays as him. I think that feeling partly lies in the fact that Artemy’s route has a separate objective to ending the plague. Though Daniil and Clara likewise have motivations besides the plague (saving Thanatica/defining her identity) the resolution to their conflicts becomes linked to the plague: Daniil must stop it to save his research, and Clara likewise claims her identity through how she combats it, but Artemy has two conflicts which overlap but can still remain separate.
All of this particularly interests me in the context of Artemy’s reaction towards the Powers That Be reveal (I’m using his reaction in the Bachelor and Changeling routes, since his own is nearly identical to Daniil’s). When Daniil tells him, Artemy says “Like I said, I don’t care all that much. Aglaya told me about this too, you know... She expected to stun me with the news, but I wasn't sad at all. Although I didn’t take her words that literally. But I'm honest with myself—so does it really matter what I'm made of?”
Similarly in the Changeling Route:
Haruspex: I'm not a toy, Changeling. I am Artemy Burakh, a Haruspex who knows the lines, a Warden who has fulfilled his mission and reconciled his father's spirit with the Earth, and has made the correct choice. That's who I am. Do you understand?
> So you're a believer in salvation through ignorance?
Haruspex: I must admit I'm a bit confused—but it was for the better. It allowed me to escape the iron grip of my preordainment. I'm content with being able to choose with my heart.
This line of thinking follows what Artemy has said throughout his route, such as “They may say I am predictable, but no one would ever say I am easily controlled” or “I will do as my conscience tells me to. If this aligns with someone else’s schemes, so be it.” All of Artemy’s route he speaks about acting according to his conscience, that is what matters to him, no matter what else, hence “any choice is right as long as it’s willed.” What I especially want to focus on is “I’m honest with myself—so does it really matter what I'm made of?”
To me it reads as Artemy claiming his autonomy through “I act according to my conscience and because of that I am the person I perceive myself to be” which I very much enjoy. As tragically entertaining as a character trapped in a narrative is, it’s still interesting to me to see how Artemy asserts his autonomy via asserting his identity; he’s a little like Clara in that sense. I just love that line sm it’s so delicious to me <3 Like an old friend of sorts

So @professorlehnsherr-almashy did our family time call today and played a version of the game Heartthrob that he put together using some fandoms! Characters from Doctor Who, The Terror, Hornblower, Psychoville, Six Idiots productions, a few favorites from Jane Austin, The League of Gentlemen, What We Do in Shadows, and some rogue favorite characters!
Basically the game is that you draw 3 characters and then draw 2 red flags for each character to have.
You then have to guess who the other person will date/marry and choose one yourself.

For the final round we had four candidates:

Elder Vex eats crayons and ends every conversation with "you're dismissed."(which sounds right) Jenny has a dozen kids from a dozen partners and has a pet boa constrictor

Chapter 1: Miniature Overture (The Nutcracker, presented by the Emon Ballet Company)
This au started on my tumblr so if you’re looking for more information on the goings on before or after this fic, you can find all of it there!
Here is a brief synopsis of the AU and what has happened so far:
All of VM are part of the Emon Ballet Company.
Keyleth grew up around ballet, her mother was a prima ballerina before her death. Keyleth never really found her place, always being an outcast in the company until she moved to Emon. She is a soloist with the EBC.
Vex and Vax were put into ballet by their father, hoping that it would straighten them out. That didn’t work, but both of the twins found that they fell in love with it and continued their studies after they left Syldor. Vex is a principal and Vax is a soloist.
Grog works on the sets and hauls the ropes backstage, he’s not a very good dancer but he loves being around his friends and watching them dance.
Pike is a physical therapist at the company, she’s worked there for a long time and helped Grog get the job backstage.
Scanlan is a musician in the pit, he harbors a very obvious crush on Pike that is the talk of the company. He is aware of Kaylie and is working on their relationship.
Percy’s whole family was very musical, his parents wrote symphonies and he and most of his siblings were dancers. Percy and Cassandra were both part of the Briarwood Company. They were mistreated and abused by the Briarwoods and the ballet mistresses. Percy was loaned to the Emon Ballet Company for a production of Swan Lake. After the production, Allura offered him a permanent place in their company. He took it and left Cassandra behind. Percy is a principal.
Cassandra stayed in the company another year before she was able to leave and follow Percy to Emon. This fic takes place just a few months after she joined the company, she’s still getting used to it and the people. She lived with Percy and Keyleth. Cassandra is a soloist.
At this point in this au, Keyleth and Vax have been together for about a year. Percy and Vex’s relationship is more new, only a few months old.

Hold Your Hair In Deep Devotion
During their honeymoon, Kate and Anthony travelled with only one valet and one lady's maid. As they made their way around Europe, their hosts at each home or inn provided additional attendants. Even so, the newlyweds opted to be alone as much as possible, even during meals and times of preparation in the mornings and evenings. This came as a surprise to some, who were not used to hosting couples who openly showed so much affection for each other. The personal staff of the Viscount and his Viscountess, of course, were quite used to only being present when requested.
One evening during their stay in Milan, Anthony sat at the edge of the bed in the room they'd been given as Kate sat at the vanity, deftly undoing the coiffure Clara had styled that morning. She felt his eyes follow her as she kneeled by the fireplace to rinse her hair in the basin of hot water she'd requested from the house staff.
She took her place back at the vanity, her hair now damp. She reached over to dip her fingers in the small pot of coconut oil that was being warmed over a candle so it was liquid, which made it easier to evenly distribute.
Her hand hovered over the pot when her husband spoke.
"May I make a request?"
Kate turned to him, her curiosity piqued. Anthony walked the short distance to her, barefoot, the sleeves of his linen shirt rolled up, his braces hanging off the waistband of his breeches.
“I would like to try, if you will allow it," he said as he stood behind her, looking at her in the mirror's reflection.
Kate furrowed her brows until it dawned on her that Anthony was referring to the coconut oil.
"Ah," she said, smiling. "Are you interested in applying it to my hair, or would you like me to vacate this chair for you?"
Anthony rolled his eyes and kissed the top of Kate's head. "Please stay where you are, Lady Bridgerton."
Kate silently acquiesced, then found herself grinning at how slowly and thoughtfully Anthony moved his hand toward the warm pot. As he dipped his fingers in, he said, "You must tell me what to do, love. You should find it easy, as I believe giving me instructions is your favourite pastime, is it not?"
"Oh, yes. I do so enjoy it."
"Well, go on, then. I assume I am not simply meant to hold still as the pomade slides down my arm."
"No, no," Kate giggled. "Gather it in both your hands and rub it gently into my scalp before running your fingers down the length of my hair. Then, you simply repeat the action until the oil has been worked in everywhere."
As Anthony dutifully began, he asked, "And how much am I to use?"
"As much as you need, but not too much."
In the mirror, Anthony could see her self-satisfied grin and glared at her. "Was I not meant to be the one to vex you?"
Kate shrugged, temporarily giving up her nettling to enjoy the feel of her husband's fingers massaging her scalp. That is, until he got to the back of her head.
Like she was afraid he might, Anthony stilled his fingers when he brushed over the scar that was there. She reached across her shoulder to hold onto his forearm.
"Anthony."
"Does it ever hurt still?"
"Darling, it was so long ago."
“No, not very long ago at all, Kate."
She sighed and rubbed her hand up and down Anthony's arm.
"Kate, does it hurt?" he implored.
"No. I promise it does not."
“Alright." The word was barely audible as he continued working. Despite her attempt to reassure him, Kate could tell Anthony was now purposely avoiding the scar.
Once he was done, Kate blew out the candle that was keeping the oil warm. She felt Anthony sweeping her hair to the side.
“Oh… Do you know how to plait?”
“Of course I do," Anthony responded quickly, seemingly affronted by the fact that she even asked.
Kate raised an eyebrow at him.
Anthony's face softened, his expression now somewhat morose. “I…had to learn. Sometimes, when they were young, the girls insisted I be the one to prepare them for bed. I had their governess show me how to properly do everything they needed."
Kate felt a bit embarrassed for doubting him. “Ah, of course. My apologies.”
“No need, Darling.” Anthony smiled subtly as he began to weave Kate's hair to the side the way she preferred.
“Appa had to learn as well," she said quietly. "Before Mary."
Anthony caught her eyes in the mirror and nodded his understanding.
After a short while, Anthony finished the end of the braid with a thin ribbon and took a step back with a flourish. “Are you not impressed, my lady?”
Kate turned to look at him, running her hand down her neatly woven hair. "Oh, I am indeed thoroughly impressed."
Anthony nodded with pride before he looked at his hands, clearly befuddled. “And what does one do with the, um… excess?”
Kate smirked. “Coconut oil is beneficial all over the body, my lord. Not only for one’s hair.”
Anthony quickly looked back up at her. “Is that so?”
In answer, Kate stood and tugged at the ribbons of her nightgown, loosening the shift until it fell to her feet.
Anthony's eyes widened as he appreciatively perused his wife's naked body, a body with which he had spent the last several weeks studiously familiarising himself.
With so much control that Kate wondered briefly if she should be offended, Anthony spread what remained of the oil on his hands across her decolletage, down the valley between her breasts, and then massaged her hips and buttocks.
The final destination of his hands allowed him plenty of purchase to suddenly pull Kate toward him, her bare body hitting his clothed one with a soft thud. Anthony's smile was smug when he heard his wife yelp as they made full contact.
He kissed her, but Kate quickly and roughly pushed him away to even the playing field by divesting her husband of his clothes. They inelegantly worked together to complete the task before Anthony had his hands back on her bottom, sliding down her thighs enough to haul her up against him. Kate instinctively wrapped her legs around him as he stumbled backwards, falling onto the bed on his back.
Kate's laugh was quickly cut short by Anthony’s demanding mouth, his hands like a vise on her hips, grinding her down onto him. Kate gasped, a desperate sound.
Anthony panted as he pulled his wife down onto him repeatedly, each time thrusting upwards to meet her. "I must say, Viscountess," Anthony suddenly rolled them over, hitching one of Kate's knees up to his hip. She moaned and pulled his face down to hers, "your skin does feel…mmm…exceptionally soft." They kissed messily as Anthony grabbed her other leg and pulled it up as well. Kate choked out a sob. He ran his hands up and down her thighs, gently, despite the relentless piston like rhythm of his hips.
"I am learning so very much from you, Darling."

Critical Role parties ranked by mothers’ names
They might be sung or unsung heroes of the land, but the real question is, how well do they all know each other? For example, what are their mothers’ names?
Introduction
Results reflect the number of named mothers in each party divided by the total number of known mothers in each party. “Known mothers” refers to mothers of PCs who are confirmed to exist. In order to be a “named” mother, their names/titles must be stated in an episode of Critical Role. Supplementary books and comics are for now excluded, although to my knowledge, this does not change the results in any substantial way.
If a character does not have a mother or mother figure (e.g. FCG, Molly, Kingsley) or does not know/remember who their parents are (e.g. Fjord, Yasha), those parents are not counted as known mothers here because it was not possible for the characters -much less the party- to know who they were/are. At the same time, if a character does know who their parents are but it is never established whether any of those parents is a mother (e.g. Pike, Grog), they are not counted as a known mother/mother figure in the party total.
Additional notes:
Mother figures who are not formally related to party members are considered as known mothers if the characters acknowledge some type of parental/familial relationship with them (which does not equate to a mothering or a positive relationship). Currently, this is only relevant to two PCs, Yasha and Orym. With Yasha, the Skyspear is counted as a parental figure, although she did not consider the quality of that relationship to be mothering or positive. With Orym, it is unclear whether he considers Nel (Derrig’s wife) to be a mother figure, although we do know that they had a good relationship and it is likely she also occupied a parental role in his life as Derrig did.
FCG, Molly, and Kingsley are unique cases of characters who came into existence under very particular circumstances. While FCG is certainly a sentient person, he has no memory of his early years and relationships in Aeor, and they don’t appear to view their relationship with Dancer as a parent-child one. Molly and Kingsley, on the other hand, were pieces of Lucien’s soul who became their own persons and who emphatically did not identify with or as Lucien. Therefore, while Lucien certainly had parents, they are not counted as either Molly or Kingsley’s parents.
If party members share a mother (really just Vex and Vax), that mother only counts as one known mother for the party total and is not double-counted.
Party rosters are as listed on Encyclopedia Exandria. This does mean that Tiberius is included for Vox Machina. One-shot characters (Derrig, Lieve’tel, Bertrand in the case of Vox Machina) are not counted as part of the official party roster, even if they are referred to as party members in the game.
A huge shout out to Encyclopedia Exandria in general, which was a really great resource in researching the familial relationships of each character and what has come up in-game! And now, let’s get to the stats!

The ones who started it all! Perhaps thanks to Scanlan’s speech, Vox Machina gets a perfect score, with six out of six known mother/mother figures being named in-game. With Pike and Grog, while we know that both characters had at least one father, we do not know the gender of their other parents, and they are therefore not counted as known mothers here.
Bonus fact: If we exclude Tiberius, Vox Machina would still be batting at 100%.

Since we do not know any of Fjord’s or Yasha’s birth parents, they are not included as known mothers in the overall count. Similarly, neither Molly nor Kingsley have applicable parent relationships.
Bonus fact: If we exclude the Skyspear (and her inclusion is extremely tenuous), the Mighty Nein is still at 100% when it comes to known mothers.
Bells Hells - 2/5 (40%)

Bertrand - unknown
Chetney - unknown
Dorian - unknown
Fearne - Birdie Calloway

Bells Hells is where it gets complicated! Out of five known mother/mother figures, only two are named, giving Bells Hells a total of 40%. As stated above, FCG has never defined his relationship with Dancer as one of parent-child, and we do not know who Bertrand, Chetney, and Dorian’s parents are/were. We do know that Ashton, Laudna, and Orym are all stated or shown to have a mother, although we do not know their names. On the other hand, the mothers whom we do know have certainly made an impression as big as that red moon in the sky!
Bonus fact: Since it is not clear whether Orym also considered Nel a mother figure, she is excluded from the official count. If she were included, she would raise Bells Hells overall total to 3/6 (50%).
Conclusion
While both Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein have a perfect score, Mighty Nein arguably has the edge over Vox Machina in terms of just having more known mothers to name. The Mighty Nein also have the meta advantage of coming after C1, with the cast meme-ing the hell out of “What’s my mother’s name?” and making it an actual in-game icebreaker question.
Very understandably, Bells Hells has had fewer episodes than either Vox Machina or Mighty Nein at this point, so we know a little less about them. However, it is worth mentioning that we do know a fair deal about the relationships that Bells Hells have with their families, even if we don’t know the names of their parents, and that the impact of those relationships have been markedly felt by the PCs and their personal arcs. Someone who never appears in the narrative but their presence is felt by what grows around them, y’know?
And now, it’s only right to close with an acknowledgement of the adventuring mothers from within these parties whom we most definitely do know and love: Vex, Pike, Veth, Beau and Yasha (if they did end up adopting), and of course, Fearne <3

Okay so I’ve decided to explain the premise of my fantasy story I hope to finish and make a reality.
The first part of it I plan to have be a book series called The Gods Game. It takes place in a completely original world made by me with eight main species, seven nations, and many new kinds of flora and fauna within a fantasy setting. Each species has their own religion and belief system that is centered around their own god. The gods here want their religion to be the dominant one so they devise a plan, or rather a game.
The Gods Game.
They grant eight mortals godlike power, all born with it and at the same time. When they turn fifteen, they will receive a message to seek the other champions, not told how it will all end or who the other champions are. Though you my friend, will know who they are:
Katrin’s champion: Clara, champion of negotiations
Wolfla’s champion: Alex, champion of fire.
Shakie’s champion: Velatrix, champion of chaos
Kumu’s champion: Vex, champion of the jungles
Avia’s champion: Eloise, champion of wings
Pn’ckets champion: Umbra, champion of the voids
St’roq’s champion: Feyure, champion of storms
Truenq’s champion: Archia, secret champion of the forgotten (he is not introduced until the final battle)
Through the story they become friends and some become even more. The seven known champions make their way to the final battle location and are told that to end the game, they need to fight to the death. The surviving champion’s god would then win the game and their religion would dominate.
Evidently, they don’t want to. They don’t want to kill the people they’ve come to love, some platonically, some romantically. But the gods are able to forcibly control their champions, the gods will becoming their will.
That’s a lot of typing so I’ll leave it there for now!

On this day:
CRIME OF THE CENTURY: VEXING TYCOON VANISHES
On December 2, 1919, Ambrose Small, entertainment impresario, vanished without a trace, thus setting off the largest manhunt in Canadian history. Major cities were searched, the Toronto Bay was repeatedly dredged, a Toronto dump was dug up, ashes from the Grand Opera House furnace were sifted on the advice of spirit mediums, and the basement of Small's mansion was excavated. A passion for women and gambling on fixed races earned Small some deadly enemies. The last person to see him alive was his lawyer, a Mr. E. Flock, who was settling the million-dollar details of recent theater transactions in his office at the Grand Opera House. At 5:30 p.m. Flock left his client and the building.
A year earlier, Ambrose had promised his wife, Teresa, that he would stop seeing his mistress, Clara Smith, but he didn't. The police investigation into his disappearance revealed a secret den attached to his office. The room had an outside entrance and was fitted out to "entertain" women. Neither Small's wife nor his mistress knew of its existence. The day Small disappeared, his secretary, John Doughty, did likewise, along with $100,000 from his boss's safety deposit box. Captured a year later, in an Oregon lumber camp, Doughty insisted he was not involved with the missing man. Rumors of a police cover-up to protect Teresa against charges of masterminding her husband's disappearance began to surface.
Small, a self-made millionaire, had started out as a hotel dishwasher and as a theater usher at the Grand Opera House. He then became the opera house's booking agent, bringing in racy, successful shows such as Bertha the Sewing-Machine Girl and School for Scandal. After his disappearance, spirit mediums claimed he was murdered, had amnesia, was abducted, or was gambling in Mexico with champagne bottles in his pockets and women on his arms. His ghost is said to haunt the Grand Opera House in Toronto and is credited with saving the theater's prominent architectural feature from accidental destruction in the 1970s.

A Grave(s) in Berlin
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Sophienkirche in Berlin-Mitte, a hidden baroque treasure tucked away behind a row of grey 19th century houses whose walls still bear the scars of WW2.

Those of you who have read my post on early modern ghost hunts will recall the fate of Sophie Luise zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin, third wife of Friedrich I., King in Prussia, from whom the church receives its name. At first, following her having been sent away from the Prussian court on account of an incident in which she, unaware of her surroundings due to her mental illness, had barged into her dying husband's bedroom covered in blood, the church was dubbed Spandauische Kirche according to its location in the Spandauer Vorstadt (Spandau Suburb) quarter. Curiously, Friedrich Wilhelm I., de facto stepson of Sophie Luise, had the name changed to its originally intended name Sophienkirche (Sophie's Church) a few years later.
Its tragic patron aside, the church can boast a few more celebrity connections: on 13 September 1964, Martin Luther King preached in the church on a surprise visit to East Berlin.

But while I am always one for the particular charm of Prussian baroque architecture, another object of interest is located in the former churchyard.
The grave of Leopold (1795–1886) and Clara (1808-1871) von Ranke and their youngest son Albrecht (1849–1850) is easy to miss, seeing as it is located in a part of the former church grounds that has in recent history been converted into a playground for the church-owned kindergarten (am I a tad jealous that my run of the mill kindergarten did not have a playground with historic monuments in it? Absolutely.) and quite overgrown, which is a shame, considering the significance of Leopold and Clara.
Leopold von Ranke was a leading historian of the 19th century, often credited with shaping history as a scholarly discipline as we know it today and his wife Clara (Helena Clarissa, though she seems to have preferred the nickname Clara) was a leading salonnière in mid-19th century Berlin.
Having grown up academically in the shadow of Leopold, it is Clara who has captivated my interest. Helena Clarissa von Ranke, née Graves, was a member of the family I research and sometimes post about among the more light-hearted content. For those of you who do, suffice to say that Clara's great-great-grandfather Henry "Claymore" Graves and Admiral Samuel Graves's (the man around whom most of my research revolves) grandfather James John Graves were brothers.
Born in Dublin in 1808, Clara met Leopold von Ranke in Paris in July of 1843. They married the same year and moved to Berlin together, where the Rankes were renowned for their salon, visited by foreign and domestic intellectuals alike, two of the most famous of whom may have been the Brothers Grimm.
Historically, most of the historiography concerning the von Ranke family has mainly focussed on Leopold, and Leopold's work; which seems natural enough, given his importance to history as a modern academic discipline, but leaves out Clara's equally important role as her husband's equally academically-versed aide (among other things, she was competent in the use of 20 languages, half of whom she spoke fluently and sometimes did translations of Leopold's work into English) without whom a lot of his work would not have been quite so easily possible, an influential salonnière, and most importantly, a woman with literary ambitions (she was a poet, though found having her works published rather difficult), views and opinions on the politics of her time.
This is particularly vexing seeing as their granddaughter Ermentrude Bäcker-von Ranke was, according to different sources, either the first or second woman in Germany to study history and obtain a doctorate. Luckily, this changed in 2012 when Andreas Boldt's The Clarissa von Ranke Letters and the Ranke-Graves Correspondence 1843-1886 was published, allowing for a greater insight into Clara's everyday life as an integral and beloved part of the extended von Ranke family, her political opinions and friendships with influential people such as, to give only one example, Florence Nightingale.
While the Rankes were politically on a conservative spectrum in Germany, Clara maintained a keen interest in Irish politics and expressed her desire for a peaceful coexistence of Catholics and Protestants in the country.

I wish I could enclose a better picture of the von Ranke grave; alas, it now being situated in a kindergarten playground, there was no way to access it; a lovely lady who I believe was of the church's friend's association was however so kind as to, after checking for the keys to the gate and not finding them, give me the telephone number of the parish office, with whom a closer look at the grave might be arranged. A few pictures on Wikipedia indicate that they occasionally let people visit the premises, so I am hopeful that I might be lucky. Next time I am around, I might try and call them- stay tuned!
