fun facts about ukrainian vampires (opyr)
• opyri can be of two origins: born and made. made opyri are made by witches, who can smear a baby with blood of a man who went to sleep without praying, thus making the child an opyr.
• opyri have two souls. when opyr dies, only one soul goes to the otherworld. this is why they continue living after death. they aren't immortal though, and only live post-death for seven years. you can presume the person who died was an opyr and will return later if right after their death was a great storm.
• they are very merry fellas and are known to sing, dance and play musical instruments. you can see them partying if you go to the village border at midnight. they also can be spotted smoking a pipe while laying in their coffin.
• opyr can turn into variety of different things: a child, a white or a black dog, a cat, a wolf, a horseman.
• if someone sneezes and you don't respond with "bless you" such person can become an easy target for opyr.
• to get rid of the opyr, you must take them into your arms and carry them across the town or village three times. classical stake to the heart works too.

How a person could become an upiór (a vampire) according to Slavic folklore?
I would like to disclaim that the information below was gathered by ethnographers on the territories of present day Poland, Ukraine and Belarus and that there was a lot of regional variation to the folk tales about vampires, therefore beliefs presented below cannot be treated as universally applicable to all regions of aforementioned countries.
An additional disclaimed: upiór is a Polish word, however other closely related names exist in other Slavic languages.
So who could become an upiór after death?
people who were left unburried,
people who were burried improperly, for example without certain ritual objects that were supposed to make the journey across easier, or conversely with objects that make the crossing more diffficult, such as shoes (in such case the upiór has to wander the earth untill they wear the shoes down completely),
people who were physically incomplete at the moment of death (for example they did not have a bag with their cut nails, which they collected all their lives, or they did not hide their lost teeth),
people whose corpse was crossed/jumped over by a man or animal, or over whose corpse a bird flew,
a person who died suddenly, i.e., by suicide, murdered, dying in an unfortunate accident,
unbaptized babies,
women who died in labor,
murderers and other people who harm the community (such as dishonest surveyors, who according to folk beliefs are rejected by earth after death),
a person who, during their lifetime, underwent spells protecting against wounds - their corpse would not decompose after death,
almost certain to become vampires were people who were conceived as a result of breaking of certain societal taboos, for example while their mother was on her period, during the Feast of Saint Anne, during the Feast of Annunciation, during the Feast of the Cross,
similarly almost certain to become a vampire after death were witches (czarownice lub czarownicy),
another category almost certain to become a vampire were people considered to be in some way related to demons or similar to them - for example people born with teeth, people with big teeth, people with large heads, people with various disabilities, people who lived very long and all kinds of outsiders, especially outsiders of an unfriendly religious denomination,
a child could be born as a vampire if their mother swallowed a piece of burning coal or a spark that fell into a pot during Christmas Eve,
a living person could turn into a vampire if the steppe wind blew on their feet.
Of course people could also turn into vampires after death through contact with an upiór during their life, for example
as a result of getting bitten by one,
born from a union between a vampire and a human,
children breastfed by a vampire mother.
To sum it up, it seems that various ideas about the origin of vampires can be reduced to two root causes: 1) omissions or errors in rituals and breaking ritual prohibitions; 2) a different ritual status of a dead person who was already considered a demonic being during their lifetime.

SLAVIC VAMPIRES
• modern Polish — upiór, upir, wąpierz, wupi • Czech and Slovak — upír • Ukrainian — упир (upyr) • Russian — упырь (upyr') • Belarusian — упыр (upyr) • Old East Slavic — упирь (upir')
A demonic being from Slavic folklore, a prototype of the vampire.
🦇 The term upiór was introduced to the English-language culture as a "vampyre", mentioned by Lord Byron in “The Giaour“ in 1813, described by John William Polidori in "The Vampyre" in 1819, and popularised by Bram Stoker's “Dracula”. With the development of mass culture, he returned as a "vampire" recognizable in literature and film.
🦇 Slavic belief indicates a stark distinction between soul and body. The soul is not considered to be perishable. The Slavs believed that upon death the soul would go out of the body and wander about its neighbourhood and workplace for 40 days before moving on to an eternal afterlife. Thus pagan Slavs considered it necessary to leave a window or door open in the house for the soul to pass through at its leisure. During this time the soul was believed to have the capability of re-entering the corpse of the deceased. Much like the spirits mentioned earlier, the passing soul could either bless or wreak havoc on its family and neighbours during its 40 days of passing. Upon an individual's death, much stress was placed on proper burial rites to ensure the soul's purity and peace as it separated from the body. The death of an unbaptized child, a violent or an untimely death, or the death of a grievous sinner (such as a sorcerer or murderer) were all grounds for a soul to become unclean after death. A soul could also be made unclean if its body were not given a proper burial. Alternatively, a body not given a proper burial could be susceptible to possession by other unclean souls and spirits. Slavs feared unclean souls because of their potential for taking vengeance.
🦇 From these deep beliefs pertaining to death and the soul derives the invention of the Slavic concept of Ubır. A vampire is the manifestation of an unclean spirit possessing a decomposing body. This undead creature needs the blood of the living to sustain its body's existence and is considered to be vengeful and jealous towards the living. Although this concept of vampire exists in slightly different forms throughout Slavic countries and some of their non-Slavic neighbours, it is possible to trace the development of vampire belief to Slavic spiritualism preceding Christianity in Slavic regions.
🦇 An upiór was a person cursed before death, a person who died suddenly, or someone whose corpse was desecrated. Other origins included a dead person over whom an animal jumped, suicide victims, witches, unchristened children, and those who were killed by another upiór.
🦇 Slavic vampires were able to appear as butterflies, echoing an earlier belief of the butterfly symbolizing a departed soul. Some traditions spoke of "living vampires" or "people with two souls", a kind of witch capable of leaving its body and engaging in harmful and vampiric activity while sleeping.

Upiór.
This depiction was inspired by folk beliefs, in which an upiór was described as having a red, ruddy face and skin, glowing "wolf-like" eyes and a gaze that could kill you.

---☁︎。⋆。 Chrissy's gaze softened at Logan. There was no way she could chastise him, she had the same concern herself. And it probably didn't help that Logan was 200 years her senior. If it were someone younger? Usually the upiór would snap and tell them to get ahold of themselves. But now that she was getting into her 200's- the fear was valid. "I would be lying if the same thought didn't run through my mind," she cautiously began. For the most part, she had outgrown her accent- but still hit hard on certain consonants. "You can always make your own companion. I've known a few to do that," she chuckled. She was jealous of those who could.

Hej, znasz jakieś miejsce do dyskusji wyłącznie o "Upiorze Opery" Gastona Leroux?

fun facts about (polish) vampire folklore because i'm too autism
(disclaimer: my source for all of this is the book "Upiór. Historia naturalna" by Łukasz Kozak i'm not pulling this out of my ass)
The word "vampire" came from a mistranscribed Serbian word, written down by Austrian officials informing about a panic among the locals, who claimed that during a plague their dead were rising and biting them and spreading the plague further
In Poland, the words used to describe what later transformed into a "vampire" in literature were: upiór (and variations thereof - the word came from Ukrainian, and the Ukrainians got it from Turkish "ubyr"), strzyga (f)/strzygoń (m) and wieszczy (m)/wieszczyca (f). "Upiór" was used in the southeast, "strzyga" around the central regions, "strzygoń" (as well as strzyga) specifically in Lesser Poland (Małopolska) and "wieszczy" in Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) and in Kashubia. "Wąpierz" was not a word until some writer in the 19th century made it up!
The upiór actually very rarely drank blood. It happened, sure, but a much more bloodthirsty creature was zmora/mara. However, upiory often drank milk, stealing it from cows and horses. Both are life-giving bodily fluids, after all.
The above might make you think about witches, who were often blamed with stealing or spoiling milk, and you wouldn't be far off. You see, you had to be born as an upiór (these ones weren't contagiously biting!), and while you were alive, it would give you various magical powers, like clairvoyance and detecting the dead upiory, and so the upiór was practically a synonym of a sorcerer or witch. Of course, the sources vary, but depending on who you asked, they could control weather bringing heavy rains or droughts, see the future, know literally everything and so on. Those so-called "living vampires" knew who they were since birth and were often helpful, until they died.
After an upiór died, that's when the bad things happened. They disappeared from their graves, destroyed churches, broke candles, brought plague upon the people, scared their neighbors, and if one puffed in your face, you would soon die. They were said to be able to walk around with their decapitated head, so anti-vampiric burials often had to be very thorough and decapitation wasn't enough.
The signs that were supposedly telling of a living vampire were, among others: being born with teeth, being born in a caul, not having armpit or pubic hair BUT having a hairy chest, not having undergone confirmation (i'll come back to that in a moment), having a very red face and easily and often blushing (not being pale!), or being born with a deformed foot.
Not having participated in the confirmation sacrament was especially damning, because it was believed that upiory had two souls (and two hearts). When they were baptized, only one soul was being saved, and the confirmation sacrament was supposed to protect the second soul. This, of course, was extremely against the catechism, so the first "official", church-related sources recording those beliefs had to invent another "backstory" for upiory, and they claim that an upiór is a dead person specifically, who was given to the devil at birth, the baptism saving their soul, but their body still belonging to the dark forces, which was why they rose from their graves - the devil basically hijacked their corpses.
I won't make this post much longer but I will GLADLY answer any questions because this is my special interest and I just came back from an exhibition where the author of the aforementioned book talked about all of that so. me right now ⬇️ (readmore so you dont get continuously blased with the gif under it)

papa emeritus iii x fem reader Terzo is serving a death sentence. It isn’t like he had much of a choice. He remembers the game night clearly. The typical arguments and accusations of cheating had subsided and it was a rare moment of fun and relaxation with his brothers. The next thing he remembers is waking up on a gurney and gasping for air. They told him his brothers were dead. They told him they had removed his head for a photoshoot and then reattached it again. They gave him a choice: die now or take their money and never speak to them again.
