Convergence Part 1 (spoilers)
*Deep inhale*
*Long exhale*
THE TIME IS NIGH!!!
So to start,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say I was utterly shocked that Jaania chose not sacrifice any more of her forces to buy her more time weave her spell but after giving it some thought it's an action that makes sense for her. As I mentioned in commenting on the Final Steps release, Jaania is finally able to see that our motivations we're always intended to strive for everyone's sake in the best of ways we knew how. As a result, she's hoping we can see and have faith in the good she's trying to bring about through her ascension.
As such, it makes no sense in her eyes to waste the lives of those who have been so loyal to her in helping her reach this moment when there's a chance their lives can be spared by us and they in turn be able to experience the world she seeks to achieve. Though those same troops would have been more than happy to lay down their lives for her so that world is brought to fruition. It's just a pity Jaania didn't give the order to retreat sooner otherwise the last of the Pelekoans might have survived.
What troubles me is the comments like these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's no secret to anyone that the last of Jaania's forces were those who were most loyal to her and her vision but what I find troubling here is the inevitable aftermath of these people once this conflict reaches its conclusion. As Hansa, pointed out to us in the Awakened Depths, Jaania became a beacon for those who had a simple wish to be achieved: to be free of any and all magical threats that Lore offers. However, it's not just these soldiers that want that, it's the nobles, the farmers, the little guys that have been supporting the Rose all these years across Greenguard and likely still do, sure that number has definitely taken a dive since the start of Book 3 but I doubt it's still insignificant. All of those people will soon find their dreams and the person who was meant to bring back a sense of uninterrupted peace in their lives is about to be dashed. We can only hope their response to this reality is constructive as opposed to the opposite.
Tumblr media
What I've been saying all along folks :3
Tumblr media
Miss me with that "we're not so different you and I" speech.
Tumblr media
I like to think this is the Hero taking all they've learned about the ability to make choices in the Maleurous saga and is just throwing that much needed wisdom back at Jaania who feels the need to instill order in the world.
Tumblr media
This comment is interesting to me because we have seen the Hero effectively try and be everywhere all at once for eveyone's sake, quite almost obsessively I might add, and I feel if Jaania hadn't recently just had a change of heart on her perspective on them, and taken the time to analyze the Hero's deal, she might have been able to more strongly appeal to their need, their desperation, in protecting everyone they can. Not that it would work either way, the Hero's distrust and deep-rooted fear of her, as seen in Fear, showed that getting us on her side was simply not possible.
If she was more predatory, of course, she would have used that aspect against us as every other villain that attacks our psyche has done before. A neat contrast here is what I'm pointing out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*sigh* Every single new questionable scene with this woman continues to force me to find comfort in the fact that her and the other Magesters too dependent on the Mana Core Fragment will be dead eventually thanks to Roirr's actions. I truly want to believe there's a positive future for the Shapeless Empire that doesn't involve exploiting its citizens through this agreed upon cycle without violence but the rotting hands of the past never want to let go of control easily.
Tumblr media
YOU GAVE THEM TRAUMA AND WEREN'T EVEN SORRY!!!
Tumblr media
Okay technically this right here is the more sensible reasoning, but I stand by what I said! What I like most in this scene is that we simply reaffirm what we've been trying to tell her since this whole mess started with her organization. Everything we bring up about the harm the Rose has done thus far has been consistent and aren't negated by the fact that Jaania, at heart, wants to do what she believes is best for everyone's sake.
What I love even more however is how she averts her eyes the moment we bring up Akanthus because she knows she can't even reasonably, or delusionally for that matter, deny she has made a grave error in judgement in allowing Akanthus' abuses on, well, basically everyone, and soon everything, in his wake. It's that "Yeah, ya got me there look" that just sends warm feelings down my spine.
Tumblr media
Now if you told me at the start of this saga Jaania was going to offer us a bargain to effectively play as the puppeteer god of fate alongside her, I definitely would have called you insane. It's moment I'm sure comes as a complete shock to everyone, it certainly did to me anyway. And honestly why wouldn't it? It's one thing to ask us to stand down and simply allow her to achieve apotheosis but it's a completely different matter to propose to come and play god. But it's one that sadly makes all too much sense.
Jaania has admitted that she has made terrible mistakes and has been too much of an imperfect being in her quest to achieve peace and prosperity for Lore. So better way to accommodate for her ham-fisted actions and judgement so far then to have someone like the Hero to hopefully keep her worse tendencies in check. As opposed to someone like Akanthus or Zadd who would, in all likelihood, make things worse had they been afforded the opportunity. There's another reason I believe she makes this offer but I'll get to that later.
Tumblr media
Nothing else to say here beyond epic callback!
Tumblr media
Out of all the Hero's moments in this quest, I believe this is where their experiences throughout the Maleurous saga shines through the brightest.
In a way, you could argue that, in spite of the obvious chaos that will come with it, Jaania's plan is to instill an eternal order, a Destiny, upon Lore itself, one in which she will insists never ends as she dictates. Yet the Hero knows the importance of others being able to decide the paths they choose to walk, I'd argue they've known that since Calamity, without some transcendental hand to yank them in another direction against their own will. So they certainly would not agree to be the one to dictate the fate of all those that live on Lore let alone allow someone as misguided as Jaania to do it.
Tumblr media
Okay, I think we all knew that the void pearl was too easy a solution to deal with Akanthus and was likely not going to work but there's something absolutely amusing about Hesperrhodos being used a shield to be sent to the Void and then teleport immediately back to Lore without issue since, ya know, Elemental Spirits can just do that at any time. Hell I at least would have thought that thing would have let a monster through or something. The downside to seeing Zvezdana looking completely slack-jawed after these events unfolded is the fact that we still don't have a damned plan to take Akanthus out of commission...so yeah.
Tumblr media
I have to say I love this final appeal Jaania gives to the trio of combatants because it shows a few things. First, that she still fails to understand that her organization was really only giving the illusion of peace to all those the dwelt within range of the Rose's reach and even then only really through the lens of normal humans. Second, it displays that she never truly had a proper grasp on the relationship she fostered with those she worked alongside. Lastly, she places too much hope that wanting the same things is not the same as agreeing ideologically how get those things.
Which inevitably leads to one option: Violence
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have waited 12. long. years. for this very moment. 12 years spent waiting since we broke free from that ice cap. 8 years I waited since from the first time we saw her again in Timelines. 7 years since the original Gala and our spat. 4 years since dealing with the second rift and I had a deeper appreciation for her mental state which motivates her.
And now I am finally here to fight Jaania one on one. So, you best believe I fought alone to prove which of us was could beat the other!
The following boss fight that ensues is perhaps one of the best thematic story fights in the entire game at this point, as it should be for the antagonist that is the face for this entire saga. I'm quite pleased that devs designed her to be difficult, hell I'm even glad that couldn't easily soul gambit my way out of this one.
In terms of mechanics, it's everything you could expect, Jaania does everything she can to debuff us and each time she fails and has her health cut down in bulk she commands even more strength to take us down, even attempting to go for the old freeze'em solid trick and when that doesn't draw any purchase thanks to Aegis she relies on her new found soul weaving arts to dispatch us. All the while we deal with the tragic music in the background tugging at the heart strings for a conflict that should have been avoided.
How far we've come since the Doom Amulet was our first real challenge in-game for year, eh?
Tumblr media
And can I say how amusing it is that Jaania trapping us in ice is something that could only work once? Aegis apparently always had the means of unfreezing, he simply couldn't due to Draco keeping everyone away from where we were placed. So, with him already being close by to protect our soul from going poof, there's no way he's going to let us get trapped again. Even more amusing is to think about how Jaania is basically using the old ice soul weaver meta to take us on.
But after all of that we prove in the end, with or without aid, to be stronger than Jaania, at least in this exact moment.
Tumblr media
It's a pity though that the moment does not last as expected Jaania will not let it end without fighting at her full potential.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This right here is the reason I believe Jaania made her initial proposal to us and why I bring up the Maleurous saga. For me at least, it's easy to see the similarities between Jaania and Notha. Both are exceptionally powerful accomplished mages that desperately sought out to change a world that gave them deep rooted traumas that they wished to change that world so that the suffering they experienced could not continue. However, where Notha wanted to bring about chaos to change the order of the world; Jaania is hellbent on imposing order on the chaos the world of Lore and its magic offers its inhabitants. Furthermore, I suspect, unlike Notha, that Jaania cannot bring herself to reconcile with the trauma magic has placed on her life and the people she cared about. Most defining of all though, which will likely be her downfall, is her need to be in control of everything so that she or anyone else might never hurt again.
Antagonists like Jaania are always left in a hard spot. They seek to rid the world of suffering and conflict forever and while that is a noble desire they fail to realize how unfortunately intrinsic those things are to existence. Thusly they bang their heads on a wall until they're bloodied and broken only for that dream they longed for to dissipate before their very eyes.
Tumblr media
And so, her last option is to go full synchronization. I can't guess what happens next here with Jaania. Judging by the increased streaks of white in her hair, her soul is continuing to unravel though I think she's in no worse of a state than Tomix was when he was at the end. I was originally going to say synchronizing with a corrupt spirit created through forbidden magic would spell instant catastrophe for Jaania but then I remembered Aspar was created through the same means, although he was just a fragment, so she might pull off the effect with little issue.
I suppose we must simply wait and see what becomes of our troublesome Arch Magus and where the winds will turn for her ambitions.
And of course, there's still this asshole and the doom device.

Prompt:
Tagged canon divergence because I want to see the end of the Defiers of Fate abyssal war epilogue except for a big glaring change: Remthalas wakes up.
Why, how, and how everyone reacts is up to you (though I would prefer to see people happy that he's alive, and if possible, Rem himself getting better, learning to live again, maybe even helping Aquella reclaim the abyss, but really up to the filler.) Artwise feel free to draw him getting a hug from one of the gathered party members + a heartfelt caption of course, but I want Rem to live. If you wanna make it more adult oriented that's also totally fine; all I ask is keep in mind that it's confirmed he's canonically a trans man.

Cringe is dead, let's do fic recs for our friends and our selves. I'll start.
DF Fics written by my friends (and me) that I still think about all the time:
By @oddeyesight ((Ao3 account))
ya'aburnee (General)
Notha and Uaanta find an interesting object, digging around Notha's previous lab.
The song + the fic are simultaneously very sad and very sweet. The buildup to the ending in particular, the crescendo and then the quietness of it.
chiaroscuro (Teen and Up)
Hero talks about their adventures in HHD, and Notha is reminded of an unpleasant meeting that happened so long ago.
And on the complete other side of the spectrum: Fear! Terror! Orpheus and Eurydice themes! Still kind of about grief but in a distinctly more "I'm afraid to lose you" way. 10/10 I go feral every time.
~!~
By @valorousowl ((Ao3 Account))
Dive Deep (General Audiences)
Notha Ly'Ehr is determined to save her friend. Remthalas is determined to trick their friends into killing him. Whatever it takes, this time would be different.
I keep coming back to this because the emotions are very sharp and real in a way that I can't quite describe here; you really have to read it for yourself. Notha's entire characterization is tragic, but in a way that I find deeply compelling.
Unspoken Names (Mature)
Aegis is well acquainted with Pandora. It isn't hard for him to suss out who Aspar actually is. He'll keep his mouth shut, for a price. Aspar may be desperate and lonely enough to pay it.
Overall lower stakes than my usual fare, but still packs a real whallop of emotional resonance, especially the part where Aegis tells Aspar that he's the one who should know better. I am physically incapable of being normal about Aspar and the softness and sadness of Aegis trying to be nice to him.
~!~
By @7yd1a ((Ao3 Account))
Return, Dear Light (Explicit)
This one is about Jaania living in the tower with the rest of the Villain Rehab Club, but really it's about her learning to feel again, and to forgive. Also she bones (haha) Alexander with an icicle; pretty fun use of healing ice magic I think! I don't know if there will ever be a continuation, but the characterization and the speed at which information about the characters is effectively conveyed is a lot of fun to watch unfold.
~!~
By @mismagireve ((Ao3 Account, though they are pretty much done with DF as a fandom.))
Somewhere Ages And Ages Hence (Mature)
According to Swordhaven's record systems, shortly after you fled into the forest, you were beset upon by wolves, and your remains were found hours later by a Rose researcher who had been on his way into the city for work that morning when he stumbled across the grisly scene of your demise. You are, for all intents and purposes, free of everything that was plaguing you now that you're dead and gone. You can't help but wonder if your new life hiding in the woods pretending to be dead and playing nanny to a Rose cultist's child could be counted as freedom.
I'm always up for stories about normal people in completely bonkers situations treated as, if not normal, then at least livable; I think this, even in its unfinished form, is one of the most fitting for that theme, and I really, really enjoy Syn's characterization of Lynn and Valen as people, and how the Reader-insert is most definitely their own person even while being, well, Reader-insert.
The Importance Of An "O" (General)
He got a letter from a faraway village.
This one isn't as immediately present in my mind as some other fics, but every time I see Galanoth (and tbh the word "dragoon") I do think of it, so it's definitely left an impression!
Words Spoken In Wormwood (Mature)
Among the bars in Swordhaven, there was an unspoken rule: if you serve Rose members, you don't let anything they say leave the building. So when one night at the bar, a few Rose members were discussing some secrets regarding one of their own— Well. Go ahead and ask anyone who was there that night. That conversation never happened.
This inspired several headcanons about Valen/Amadeus himself of the "they'll never believe you" sort so this is as good as canon in my heart.
Fine (General)
He was never good with people, and never made many friends, so whenever he lost one, it always hit hard. Tomix finds himself missing the hero.
This one gets a special mention even though I only read it today because I WILL be thinking about this for a long time.
~!~
By myself
Sutures (Explicit)
So You Found Out You're A Masochist: A Beginner's Guide or Tomix gets injured and learns he has a kink.
It's got some gore, fair warning for that. But I keep thinking about it because of the uh, applications of intangible spirit hands, and also the nature of Tomix's unraveling.
In Vain (General)
A child's first brush with death.
This and the ask where I mention Ogenos Dessert Sausage are constantly on my mind because I'm stuck on thinking about lost cultural treasures and how they affect those who knew them and then lost them as time went by. I should post that ask on Ao3 maybe.
The Masochism Tango (Explicit)
"They feel like normal lungs. Spongy, surprisingly resilient, but so fragile at the same time..." She said, in a whispered, reverent tone he almost missed. She'd never sounded like that before, not that he knew. The silence stretched on a little longer than could really be accounted for, without the sound of her tools as she vivisected him. Notha's eyes went dilated and faintly mischievous above her mask. What did you find? ~!~ There isn't a lot of existing documentation on abyssal elf biology, so if Notha's going to make clones for herself and Remthalas, she needs to take some notes.
I would be lying if I said this one didn't live rent free in my head. Notha kissing his heart, especially.
~!~
Feel free to reblog with your own fics or other fics from this fandom that you enjoy!

Heyyyyyyyy, if it isn't my favorite hero! Don't tell the kid I said that.
Uaanta had been hard at work in her garden when she heard the familiar voice. Pushing the brim of her sunhat back, she took a good look and was unsurprised to see none other than Notha Ly'ehr swaggering through the gate like she owned the place. Well, if nothing else, she had to admire the woman's confidence and... "By the Makers," Force of habit, but at her age, who could begrudge it, "How'd you get so much younger? Did yeh die again?"

Things from the Maleurous finale I’m going feral over that aren’t Reset related:
“I don't know about you but I can't breathe underwater.” establishing that the Water-Breathing Potions In The Water Cycle situation isn’t global (WORLDBUILDING)
Uaanta calling Notha a mad scientist
seeing more of Notha’s thought process regarding how she came to her theory regarding that the Good/Evil, Order/Chaos, and Destiny/Doom dichotomies are all different names for the same things (”I always assumed Doom, Evil, the influence that lets us be free was something more... natural.”)
Remthalas revealing that Destiny/Doom is not a binary (”There is a third. There is a fourth. There is so much more.”)
Uaanta’s first action upon awaking being wanting to know if Remthalas was okay (the character development!!!)
Notha offering a prayer for the dead at the end after she questioned Uaanta praying at the start

"What If I Lied"
"...what do you want to say?" Voyna responds with a question of her own, because she knows that Notha doesn't lie, not really.
Oh, she certainly deceives- she tells the truth, but also attaches unsaid corollaries to it that change the details of any given deal, honoring the letter of the deal and dishonoring its spirit. Voyna is glad that she never had to deal with such a despicable tactic.
(Voyna ignores for the moment that she tried to break her promise with Remthalas in a similar way before, because she was justified back then, the Hero's traitorous dragon starting it all.)
"What if I'm not who you thought I am?" Notha replies, asks.
Voyna answers, "Who could you be except Noth-" but then pauses. Reconsiders.
"Are you... a clone of Notha? Perhaps one that unexpectedly woke up, like that son of hers?" Voyna asks, on guard. "I assume that you don't mean me any harm, considering that you're voluntarily admitting this, but what happened to the original Notha? Is she unharmed?"
"Yeah, she's just fine, although we aren't original and clone, not exactly," Notha(?) says wryly, then sighs. "Are you ready to listen to an entire story about how I tried to save Remthalas and ended up with two of him and another me to boot?"
Two Remthalases and two Nothas... Well, at least no one got hurt, although the idea of dealing with two Nothas is... exhausting to say the least. Thank goodness Uaanta is around now.
"I am listening," Voyna says out loud instead, "how did it end up like this?"

Convergence Part 2 (spoilers)
Tumblr media
Let's get into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, I fell in love with this full synchronization animation alone and I can see from the quality, as well as everything that comes after, is the reason why the release had to be delayed.
Truth be told, prior to this release, I was expecting Jaania's fully synchronized form to be quite the visual abomination. What with her soul being in tatters and the circumstances regarding Hesperrhodos' creation. So imagine my surprise to find a certain level of beauty in this form and it's one that perfectly encapsulates Jaania's character.
The way I see it, if Uaanta's transformation was the last stand of a hero offering up all her devotion and faith to her gods through her body and Remthalas' transformation was that of an eldritch monstrosity puppeteering its slave, then Jaania's transformation is that of a scarred woman, hence her face scar being highlighted in the transition, frantically control the order of the very world itself. Her many hands meant either guide or cut away whatever she deems fit in her eternal era of perfection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like how in spite of the noble intentions that's clearly driving her, these few lines really reveal the egotism that's mixed up in her reasoning. It's "her" perfect world we stand in the way in and it's our fault for wanting to stop her from a plan that could doom the very world she wants so desperately to protect. And that is reason enough determine that we don't have a future worth preserving.
Tumblr media
I love how Draco tried to pull the same little attack on Jaania that they did to Voyna, but she just doesn't even react to it. Never change little fella.
Tumblr media
The entire boss fight that ensues after this is truly something. Very thematically fitting in terms of Jaania's character while also somehow managing to be a step up above even the last one in part one. I'd say in spite of it being elevated to the complexity of the Inn at the Edge of Time, it still felt pretty manageable even as a Chaosweaver, so I get the thrill of kicking Jaania's butt as a weaver twice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition, I feel like a lot of the pop up text and status effects that Jaania has, or gives, really cement my thoughts in that she is rather similar to Notha's character, but unlike Notha, who existed on the side of Doom/Chaos, Jaania is the epitome of Order and Destiny. Which makes her vision for Lore all the more terrifying when she shows us what a world of perfect order looks like to her because it's a complete nightmare for the Hero.
Tumblr media
A frozen stagnant world, forever kept in stasis. One that keeps everyone from ever being hurt again but one that also keeps people from growing as they should in this world.
Fortunately, we once again prove we are more than a match for Jaania rejecting her delusion of control.
Tumblr media
And honestly, this just as much of the sorry sight I expected to be. All that time and effort she put into the Rose, to trying, in her very misguided way, to protect everyone and everything and it's all down the drain. Her hair is almost completely white now, meaning her soul is on the very brink and the people that were sacrificed along the way have essentially been wasted.
Tumblr media
One of these days I would like to take a further look into how the Hero views, well, heroism and how they've struggled with because it's an interesting sight.
I'm not sure what comes next for Jaania at this moment. She didn't die in her fight but it's clear her soul is not in good condition anymore. Even if she survives the trek back to surface, the Magesterium made it pretty clear they wanted her in their custody for judgement. Not only that, the judgement that remains back home in Greenguard for her actions and that of the Rose. Even if she's kept from any harsh punishment, where does she go from here? Will she sit in a wallow in misery? Try to atone for what she's done, provided she can be made to see the error of her ways? Perhaps Kara could help with that but beyond that I'm not sure what lies ahead for Jaania but I'm curious as to what comes next. I am satisfied with this conclusion.
However, there's that one little wrinkle to deal with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS BUTTHEAD IS STILL BREATHING AND ABOUT TO DO THE THING!!!
....AND HE'S JACKED. I mean seriously I know the experiments made him strong as hell but good lord! I suppose it makes sense it would end this way though as our band, and even the hero, has no means of actually subduing or harming Akanthus and so it's a race to ensuring that bomb does not go off in the Mana Core as there is still no telling what it might do to the Core though my guess is still that it might corrupt it with doom energy.
As for Akanthus himself, I'm not sure. It's starting to feel like he might actually just straight up and try and bathe in the core itself to connect with it at this point. Either way, this is ending in a titan fight. >:)
Tumblr media
We are soon to reach the end of this saga Loreians. Get ready.

I'll see you in my dreams (whether I like it or not)
Oh this one's a Bad End fic for Rebirth. CW for some pretty notable gore and body horror. The final fic will be sexually explicit but this part's just sad.
I think I talked about this a little on Discord? But I don't remember all too well, I've been working on it on and off for a couple weeks but the progression is fighting me a little.
(Ask me about my WIPs!)
It's up to you three, now! She'd said; she was exhausted by the effort of raising shields both mental and magical, exhausted down to her soul in ways she didn't know she could be. Notha watched the hero and Uaanta putting up their most valiant efforts to bring down Remthalas- no- the thing Remthalas had become.
And right before her eyes, they failed.
The power of that blast had been thrice over too much for her, and out of them all she'd been the most equipped to deal with it. They didn't stand a chance. They sank deeper into their own dreams, swallowed up by the false ground. Where they went, only Lock and Key probably knew, and neither could contact her in the dark silence here.
Her vision stayed surprisingly sharp, aside from the wet blur of frustrated tears. She was horribly aware of the wet, sucking sound of rubbery flesh slithering against stone as Remthalas pulled himself hand-over-twisted-hand towards her, the lantern-light of his lure casting stark shadows against her arms.
Maybe she'd never gotten out of the first nightmare after all. Her oldest friend warped into this- monster- far beyond where she could save him-
"I'm not the one who needs saving." His voice echoed in her head. The long arch of his neck dipped down towards her until she was face-to-face with him, and she could still see where his eyes should have been, skin stretched taut over the sockets, too thin over the fine arches of his bones. There was an awful ripping sound, muscle tearing asunder, blood spilling down the curve of his jaw as he opened a mouth full of teeth where a mouth hadn't been, a long split starting at his cheeks and meeting in the middle before a sinuous tongue uncoiled between his teeth. "I'm still the same. I'll always be the same. All is as it always was and always will be. I'm begging you, don't you see?"
Makers, she thought, out of habit, he almost still sounds like himself.
