hey, so, uh *gestures at the Core whose power and/or destruction is coveted for the ability to achieve a goal* *gestures at the isolated architecture of a civilisation with a connection to said Core who are not currently present* *gestures at the villain with genuine pain in his past who nonetheless CHOSE evil and did not have to be this way and this is very clear*
we have been here before

On the one hand, when the Aequilibria said "reset", it was with a lowercase r, and they seem to pretty clearly be talking about just. destroying the world as it currently exists and setting their cycle in motion again from scratch. which is a fundamentally different thing to the retrocausal rewriting of the nature of reality which was The Reset
On the other hand, they said the word "reset" and this is a setting where that is a very loaded word for the aforementioned retrocausal rewrite of reality reasons

Took my cube to the charity shop today
Me: hi I've got this for you
Volunteer: what is it?
Me: it's a donation
Volunteer: no what IS it
Me: it's just like a shelf?
Volunteer: can you turn it around so I can see how it works
[I rotate the cube so the top is upwards. This makes no different to the appearance of the cube]
Volunteer: did it come off a chest of drawers or something?
[the charity shop does not take stuff that's broken or missing pieces]
Me: no it came like this
Me: from Argos
Volunteer: what's it for?
Me: it's a shelf
Volunteer, visibly skeptical: ok. Put it over there I guess.
Me: it really did come like this
Volunteer: I don't doubt you
Volunteer: put it over there and we'll see if anyone wants to buy it
Me: ok

I'm losing it a little over just how well they set the Aequilibria up as a threat and make the players feel it in just this one quest
They'd been setting up how dangerous that manatech bomb was for five years. The moment it first showed up on screen, we saw Warlic scared by it for reasons he couldn't articulate. When Akanthus took it to be modified, we saw Amadeus wary of it. We saw what it leaking even a little bit did to Yix. Even without the Mechquest context, the game has been blaring at us, for five years, that this thing is Bad News, as loudly as they possibly could
and then it goes off
it goes off in the worst possible circumstances it could, hits us with five years of built up dread, we failed, we were too late, and...
...nothing happens. The aftereffects of this deadly threat that could've wiped Swordhaven off the map just dissipate in a few seconds.
And we get that moment of relief, that joy that Akanthus was wrong, that realisation that the thing we thought was under threat is more resilient than we feared, that moment of oh, the mana core is stronger than that
And then the Aequilibria wake up
And we get hit with it again, but this time it's
oh
The mana core is stronger than that

I love AO3 notifications that are just, like, one person leaving kudos on all your work.
Like, thank you for binge-reading my silly little stories.

When people get a little too gung-ho about-
wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?
ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

OH DEFINITELY PRE-RESET DRAGON TECH THEN, YEAH
I wonder... given the symbols are the same and in the same positions, are they actually related pieces of tech? Or are they, perhaps, the same thing?
It wouldn't be the first time the Reset turned something into an orb. Or made something smaller than it used to be
Tumblr media
*squints* and who's are you?
We know this is pre-Reset tech but it doesn't look Shadowscythe in design. It matches up to something we've seen before, I think, but I can't put my finger on it. Something about the design is familiar but "engraved ball" doesn't immediately register as a specific group's style... We know it has to be particularly powerful given what the Exalted used it for, so... Dragon tech, maybe?

I do not currently have any coherent thoughts for The Rest Of That aside from "THEY TALK LIKE MACHINES" so. Further yelling to follow when processing has occurred
