700 Londoners admitted to hospital as covid numbers soar
Doctors fear that New Year’s Eve parties and events could become super-spreader events, as the number of winter virus cases soars and the number of people testing positive for covid continues to rise in London. In the run-up to Christmas, London had the highest rate of covid in England, with data from the UK Health Security Agency estimating that around 6.1% of Londoners had the virus – more than…

UKHSA Urges Vaccination: Winter Health Shield
Tumblr media
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is amplifying its call for eligible individuals from ethnic minority groups to prioritize their health by booking both flu and COVID-19 vaccines. This urgent appeal, specifically directed at people from Pakistani and black Caribbean ethnic backgrounds and those residing in more deprived areas, aims to shield them and their families from the heightened risks of these infections during the winter months.   Inequality Insight: Emergency Hospital Admissions Recent data from UKHSA's report on emergency hospital admission rates for influenza and COVID-19 in England reveals alarming disparities. Emergency hospital admission rates for both illnesses were significantly higher among individuals living in the most deprived areas compared to those in the least deprived areas. Persistent differences in admission rates among ethnic groups were also observed.   Key Findings from the Report: - Influenza admission rates for the Pakistani ethnic group were 2.7 times higher than the white ethnic group. - Black, African, Caribbean, or black British ethnic groups had influenza admission rates 1.6 times higher than the white ethnic group. - Emergency hospital admission rates for both influenza and COVID-19 were 2.6 and 2.1 times higher, respectively, for individuals in more deprived areas.   Analysis and Future Investigations: While the report highlights these inequalities, it doesn't delve into the underlying factors driving these differences. The complex landscape of health inequalities involves multiple overlapping factors, including existing social and economic disparities, healthcare intervention coverage, and pre-existing health conditions. This analysis lays the foundation for future investigations, emphasizing the need for a closer examination of underlying reasons and the delivery of interventions.   Call to Action: Improving Vaccine Coverage The findings underscore the urgent need to enhance vaccine coverage across ethnic groups and different levels of deprivation. Dr. Mary Ramsay, Director of Immunisation at UKHSA, emphasizes the importance of taking both flu and COVID-19 vaccines for optimal protection against these viruses during winter.   Voices Supporting Vaccination: - Dr. Mary Ramsay: Encourages eligible individuals, especially those from ethnic minority backgrounds, to get vaccinated against these preventable diseases. - Dr. Shona Arora: Acknowledges observed disparities and urges eligible individuals to book flu and COVID-19 vaccinations promptly. - Dr. Salman Waqar: Emphasizes the significance of vaccination from a religious perspective and encourages eligible individuals not to delay getting vaccinated for free.   Closing the Gap: Vaccine Uptake Data Previously published UKHSA vaccine uptake data reveals disparities in influenza and COVID-19 vaccine coverage. Among individuals aged 65 years and over, there were significant differences between ethnic groups, with lower vaccine coverage in certain communities.   Easy Booking Process: Protect Yourself Today! Both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be booked conveniently through the NHS website, NHS app, or by calling 119. The vaccines can be given simultaneously for enhanced protection. With robust safety profiles and proven advantages, there's no reason to delay. Book your vaccination appointment now and ensure a healthier winter for you and your community.   Sources: THX News & UK Health Security Agency. Read the full article

A doctor has explained why the new FLiRT variants of Covid have spread so quickly and rapidly become the dominant strain, saying their mutations could make them more infectious and more able to evade immunity from vaccines and previous infections. The new variants are descended from the Omicron family, but in a matter of weeks since they were first detected they have become the most common strains in the UK and the USA.
The latest figures from the UKHSA show a 17.9% increase in Covid infections week on week and a 32.6% increase in people admitted to hospital with the virus - while another 92 people have died. It comes as the most common strains now found in the UK are the FLiRT variants KP.2 and KP.1.1.
Dr Mary Ramsay, director of public health programmes at UKHSA, said: “Our latest data shows that Covid-19 cases are still rising."
She has urged everyone who is eligible to get a vaccine at nhs.uk/get-vaccine or call 119. The latest data from the USA shows that Covid carries a 35% higher risk of death than flu, based on deaths in hospitals last winter.

Britain’s lead public health body has a staggering lack of control over billions of pounds of spending, and there is no plan for stockpiling vaccines or personal protective equipment (PPE) for a future pandemic, a damning MPs’ report has found. The public accounts committee was highly critical of the repeated governance and financial failings at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which was set up with great fanfare under Boris Johnson. Meg Hillier, the committee chair, said it would be “utterly inexcusable” for the government to have failed to make serious preparations for future health emergencies and warned the lack of a plan for stockpiling could leave health workers once again exposed to danger as they were in 2020. The committee lambasted the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), which oversees UKHSA, for lacking a strategy for reserves of PPE, vaccines and medicines despite its mandate to protect the country’s health security. The MPs were particularly critical of the decision for it to be led by Prof Dame Jenny Harries, a former deputy chief medical officer for England, saying she was “appointed into a role, as accounting officer and chief executive, of which she had no previous experience”.
[...]
Hillier said it was “completely staggering that an organisation envisaged as a foundation stone of our collective security was established with a leadership hamstrung by a lack of formal governance, and financial controls so poor that billions of pounds in NHS test and trace inventory can no longer be properly accounted for”.

If you haven't had measles, a single measles vaccine, or MMR (or you've had them but something happened to your immune system since), talk to your GP.
I got my MMR a few years back when it looked like mumps was making a comeback and I promise it hurts less than an ear piercing, doing one single push-up, or the twinges of middle-age.
It says London but measles remains airborne for hours and trains and planes exist. It is vaccine-preventable and confined to humans. It should be eradicated by now, not on the verge of a comeback.

Dear future me
It's New Years Eve 2023 right now, and I feel sad thinking about all the NYEs that have come before. For a few years, I saw in the new year via zoom with 2 close friends and we chatted well past midnight. This year, I haven't spoken to one of those friends in 6 months, and the other seems so distracted with their own things. And I know I certainly won't be able to stay up until midnight, I'll be pushing it after 9pm.
This year has been long and hard. I'm proud of myself for everything I've achieved, but it's not been without almost constant struggle. I smashed my med school exams, lived at the hospital for 6 months whilst on placement, and then was ultimately infected with SARS-COV2. That left me with worsened autonomic dysfunction, CCI, generalised hyperinflammation and neuroinflammation. And that sucks.
After making the most of Christmas, yesterday I spent the day horizontal in bed all day, save for eating and going to the toilet. I have a list of things I need to do, and a longer list of things I want to do, but I had to write off the whole lot. Again. Today, though there's a little improvement, I'd still say I feel like shit warmed up.
The world right now doesn't feel much more positive either. Covid JN1 is surging, and despite renewed recommendations from the WHO for healthcare facilities to bring back masks, the UKHSA is dragging its feet. There's no doubt anymore that they're not following the science. They get away with it though, as no lawyers are willing to fight the case (as I have found, time and again).
Everyone is ill with "the worst cold ever". There's so many stories about young people dropping dead. But people refuse to connect the dots, or connect them wrong and blame the vaccine. Public Health has abandoned us all to eugenics.
The final result? I dread going to visit my nearly 90 year old gran next month as either one of us could infect the other and finish them off. I know if I don't go though, I'll feel endlessly guilty (and be endlessly guilted). I live in a constant state of high stress.
This time last year, I don't think I had high hopes for 2023. I figured it would get worse before it gets better, but 2024 might see improvements. I was certainly right that it's got worse, but I'm less certain next year will be better- the world is so stubborn and unwilling to open its eyes. I think maybe by 2025? But who knows, maybe that's what I'll say now for every year of my life. Always "maybe the next year, maybe the next year".
Either way, I hope for me personally I'm in a better place by next New Year's. I hope my long covid is vastly improved and that I'm back on placement and coping well. I also hope I haven't been reinfected and I'm managing to stand my ground on any issues people take with me keeping myself safe. I hope that I am more hopeful.
That's all I will say for now, as honestly just writing this has tired me out! But me, I love you, you're doing the best you can and its a damn sight better than a lot of people. You can do this. Keep going. It's a marathon not a sprint.

As the worst ever outbreak of Avian Influenza continues, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has upgraded it's research into the possible risk of humans being infected. Last month the World Health Organization urged vigilance following the death of an 11 year old girl in Cambodia who had been infected with the H5N1 bird flu' virus.
The risk to humans is still considered to be low. Between 1st October 2022 and 14th February 2023, 2,310 people were monitored by the UKHSA after coming into close contact with infected birds. None of them tested positive for Avian Influenza.
However, it should be remembered that viruses constantly evolve. There is evidence that the virus has been passed to mammals living in the wild, but as far as I can ascertain it is not being passed between mammals. The real danger, (if the H5N1 virus does start infecting humans), is that it can then be transmitted from human to human.

LONDON (Reuters) -The number of diphtheria cases in England has risen this year, health officials said on Monday, citing dozens of cases found among asylum seekers arriving into the country, but adding that the risk of infection to the wider public remained very low.
Data released by the Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said there were around 50 cases among asylum seekers who arrived in England between Jan. 1 and Nov. 25, compared with an average of 2 to 11 cases in the country per year over the last decade.
Diphtheria is an infectious disease that primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. It is very rare in England due to routine immunisation introduced in 1942.
The British government has come under pressure over poor living conditions and overcrowding at a migrant holding facility at Manston in Kent, and faced threats of legal action from rights groups and a public sector workers' union.
Immigration minister Robert Jenrick in a statement to parliament after the publication of the data said there were protocols in place to prevent the spread of the infection, but that the government now needed to be vigilant.
"From today no one presenting with symptoms will progress into the asylum accommodation system,” he said. They would instead either remain in isolation at the processing center or at a designated isolation center and would also be offered vaccination, he said.
