Genesis: the story of a progressive rock band
The origin of a great band The seeds of the great genesis group began to germinate when two school groups known as Chaterhouse came together , made up of singer Peter Gabriel (born February 1950) and keyboardist Tony Banks (born 1950); and Anon, consisting of guitarist/singer Anthony Phillips (born December 1951) along with bassist/guitarist/vocalist Michael Rutherford (born October 1950). These four brilliant musicians, joined by unlikely drummer Chris Stewart , convinced producer Jonathan King to represent them and chose New Anon as their band name. This last name lasted just long enough, as Jonathan King did not like it so much, who preferred the name Genesis, whose meaning refers to the first book of the Christian Bible. However, because there was another American band that had the name Genesis, and knowing that repeating the same name is quite unoriginal regardless of whether it is patented or not, they preferred to stay as From Genesis to Revelation which, despite Being a very long name, it was very attractive. With this new name and line-up they released their debut album called, likewise, From Genesis to Revelation , managing to convince the discography of how valuable the group was and the potential it had accumulated. At this stage it should be noted that the great drummer Stewart only recorded the songs “ The Silent Sun ”, “ That's Me ”, “ A Winter's Tale ” and “ One Eyed Hound ” with the group; Well, apparently, the drummer got tired of the way his colleagues worked and decided, curiously, to go live in the south of Spain, far from any detail that associates him with the band. The good news is that it didn't take them long to find a replacement, therefore, with the services of John Silver who, in turn, would complete the work of the ex-drummer by recording the rest of the pending songs. The matter did not end there, but, in addition, the group fired Jonathan King, since he did not contribute what was expected of him. Along the same lines, they managed to enlist the services of their new producer, Tony Stratton Smith , with whom they recorded the second album Trespass . In addition, there was a change in the line-up, the newly incorporated John Silver being replaced by drummer John Mayhew . However, the blow that hurt the most was the decision of Anthony Phillips to leave the group, who decided to leave to be able to train in the classical style and therefore create his own music. Already in August of 1975, Gabriel, for personal reasons, decided to leave the group, closing, in this way, a first stage full of brilliance, maturity and creativity in every way. Without a doubt, it was the best way to close this chapter, since it was also one of the best-selling works to date. Notable acts such as Neil Diamond, Lindisfarne, Bert Jansch, Genesis, & Van der Graaf Generator have rehearsed, recorded, & taken residence here. Hosted by label manager, Stratton-Smith, in Summer of 1971, Van der Graaf Generator lived in the manor rehearsing material that would later be known as Pawn Hearts. The house is featured in the album’s inner sleeve where the band can be seen playing “Crowborough tennis”, a game invented during their stay at the Luxford House.

Tragically, Hendrix died before the session could take place. However, this led to a longstanding false rumour that Hendrix would have joined ELP. Az első lemezkiadói ajánlat / The first record label offer
A stúdiómunkálatok során jelen volt egy producer is, Roy Thomas Baker, akinek annyira tetszett a srácok „Keep Yourself Alive” című száma, hogy el is kérte a demót. A Queen tagjainak sikerült néhány megbeszélésen részt venniük, azonban hiába voltak magabiztosak és hiába volt profi demó a kezükben, senki nem vette őket igazán komolyan. Végül a Charisma Records vezetője, Tony Stratton-Smith, 25 ezer fontos ajánlatot tett nekik. Ez akkor rendkívül magas összegnek számított, főleg olyan fiatal zenészeknek, mint a Queen tagjai, akik szinte napról napra éltek akkoriban. Épp ezért volt megdöbbentő a Queen válasza, ugyanis elutasították az ajánlatot.
A Charisma Recordshoz tartozott ebben az időben, a Genesis nevű zenekar is. Nem akartuk, hogy közönséges zenekarként kezeljenek minket. Úgy voltunk vele, hogy „Vagy komolyan vesztek minket, vagy hagyjuk az egészet!”.” – mesélte később Freddie. Döntésükből kristálytisztán látszott, hogy nem csak hitték, hogy jók, hanem tudták, hogy azok.
Az ajánlat elutasítása után kénytelenek voltak visszatérni a londoni és a London környéki koncertezgetésekhez. Mindeközben Freddie szabadidejében azon kísérletezgetett, hogy hogyan is nézzenek ki a színpadon. Egy ismerőse, Wendy Edmonds így emlékszik vissza Freddie törekvéseire: „Freddie tudott varrni. Elég jól is ment neki, például fel tudta varrni ő maga a flittereket a ruhára. Én megvarrtam neki azokat a tapadós felsőket, amiket viselhetett a színpadon. Nagyon konkrétan tudta, hogy mit akar, és mondta, hogy mit, honnan másoljak le.”.

A producer, Roy Thomas Baker, was present during the studio work and liked the guys' "Keep Yourself Alive" so much that he asked for a demo. The Queen's members were able to attend some meetings, but despite being confident and having a professional demo in their hands, no one took them seriously. Finally, Charisma Records chief Tony Stratton-Smith offered them £ 25,000. This was an extremely high sum at that time, especially for young musicians like the Queen’s members who were living day by day. That is why the Queen's response was staggering, as the offer was rejected.
Also belonged to Charisma Records at that time, the Genesis band. The Queen felt that they would always rank second only after Genesis, spend a lot of money on new equipment, and they didn’t think the publisher was good enough. “As soon as the demo was finished, we knew that the sharks were circling around us. We got promising offers, something that we were going to be the next T-Rex, but we were very, very careful not to skip to nothing. We didn't want us to be treated as ordinary bands. We were told, "They either take us seriously or we leave the whole thing.” - Freddie said later. Their decision made it crystal clear that they not only believed they were good, but they knew they were.
After rejecting the offer, they were forced to return to concerts in London and around London. Meanwhile, in his spare time, Freddie was experimenting with how to look on stage. A friend, Wendy Edmonds, recalls Freddie's aspirations: “Freddie could sew. It worked out pretty well for him, for example, he could sew sequins on the dress himself. I sewed him the sticky tops he could wear on the stage. He knew exactly what he wanted and said what, where to copy it.”

Un pequeño homenaje a Gail Colson, una de las mánagers más importantes del rock aunque lleve retirada desde 2011. En los 80 se ocupó de los asuntos de Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill, Morrissey, Chrissie Hynde y Pretenders. 
Dio sus primeros pasos en el mundillo musical como secretaria de Jonathan Rowlands, representante de Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, Rod Stewart, Fontella Bass y Freddie Lennon (padre de John). 
En 1966 pasó a ser ayudante de Shel Talmy (Who, Kinks, Manfred Mann) ella decía que en aquellos días Talmy era EL productor, y se convirtió en sus ojos porque Talmy era ciego. Gail se hizo cargo de los asuntos de The Rockin´ Vickers, el primer grupo de Lemmy Kilmister, cuando sacaron su remake de “Kids Are Alright” de los Who. 
En el interesante “El libro de las Revelaciones” de Genesis (del cual está sacado básicamente este post) Gail recuerda como Talmy iba a producir a un grupo llamado The Creation, cuyo mánager era Tony Stratton-Smith a su vez futuro mánager de Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band y The Nice, y más tarde también de Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator y Lindisfarne. 
Tras la enriquecedora experiencia Talmy, Gail comenzó a trabajar para el “temible” mánager Tony Secunda (The Move, Procol Harum) pero aguantó sólo 5 semanas. Dice que el Malcolm McLaren de los 60 no paraba de fumar hachís y que era un “lunático”. 
En 1969 Stratton Smith estaba muy descontento con la industria musical y convenció a Gail para crear un nuevo sello discográfico, porque había trabajado en el sello Planet de Talmy y pensaba que estaba capacitada para crear uno nuevo. La discográfica se llamó Charisma, en referencia al carismático Tony Stratton-Smith. Glen Colson, hermano de Gail, fue el tercero en discordia como agente de prensa, y Terry “The Pill” (Terry el Pastillas) y Fred Munt, marido de Gail, completaron el equipo como grafista y gestor, respectivamente. 
Tuvieron un gran impacto inicial con “Sympathy” de Rare Bird en diciembre de 1969, éxito que tardaron unos años en repetir y ampliar. Hasta que Genesis dieron el “pelotazo”. 
Gail comenta en el citado libro (Philip Dodd, Global Rhythm Press 2007) que a Stratton-Smith y a ella no les llamó demasiado la atención el nivel de pijerio de los Genesis porque tanto Van Der Graaf como los Audience de Howard Werth eran todos niños bien de colegios privados con lo cual no era tan raro. 
A Tony Stratton-Smith le gustaba mucho Genesis y Peter Gabriel, pero su favorito era Peter Hammill, al cual consideraba un genio. Genesis se quejaban continuamente a Glen Colson de que no conseguía sacarles en la prensa y él les respondió que eran una panda de sosos y que nunca pasaba nada con ellos. Gabriel se puso un vestido rojo de mujer, una máscara de zorro y Genesis fueron portada de Melody Maker. El resto es historia. 
A finales de los setenta Gail Colson montó su propia empresa de management, GailForce, llevando la carrera de los artistas citados en el inicio del artículo.

Quella che è una delle formazioni più leggendarie di tutti i tempi si forma esattamente 50 anni fa, nel 1967, quando un gruppo di giovani studenti della prestigiosa Chartehouse School di Godalming, nel Surrey, decide di provare a suonare insieme. In verità due piccoli gruppi si unirono: da un lato i Garden Wall, formati da Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks e Chris Steward e i The Anon (con un nome così oggi spopolerebbero) di Anthony Philipps e Michael Rutherford. Nel 1968 il primo lavoro per la Decca sono due singoli di un discreto pop sinfonico, The Silent Sun / That’s Me (febbraio 1968) e qualche mese più tardi A Winter’s Tale / One Eyed Hound.  I singoli sono preludio al primo album From Genesis To Revelation, con John Silver al posto di Steward, primo vagito della musica che sarà con riferimenti ai testi biblici (e che darà di fatto il nome alla band, dal primo libro dell’Antico Testamento, Genesis appunto, che non lo aveva ancora trovato). Il successo è così inconsistente che il gruppo si scioglie e i giovani ritornano ai propri studi. Nel 1969 Tony Stratton-Smith, fondatore della leggendaria etichetta Charisma, decide di dare una nuova opportunità al gruppo. Nel 1970 esce Trespass e tra le musiche pittoriche di brani come Dusk, Looking For Someone e il primo grande brano, The Knife, inizia un cammino musicale tra i più strepitosi di sempre, fatto di tecnica, emozioni, una creatività esagerata e una voglia di stupire che segneranno un periodo, uno stile musicale e un’intera generazione di ascoltatori. Trespass è ancora acerbo, ma nel 1971 a Gabriel (voce e flauto) Banks (chitarre e tastiere) e Rutherford (chitarre) dopo che Phillips torna a studiare, con un annuncio sulla nota rivista musicale Melody Maker si aggiungono Steve Hackett (chitarra) e Phil Collins (batteria e voce) per una formazione leggendaria, che rimarrà nella storia della musica come una delle più sensazionali di tutte. Nursery Crime (1971) ne dà le prime conferme: il suono inizia a crescere in spessore e misticismo, Gabriel inizia a scrivere tra miti, leggende e giochi di parole testi che diverranno iconici, canzoni come The Musical Box, The Fountain Of Salmacis e The Return Of The Giant Hogweed sono il trampolino per Gabriel, durante i concerti, per travestimenti, cambi di costumi, momenti dove musica e spettacolo si fondono, con echi alla commedia dell’arte, ai saltimbanchi e al teatro classico. Dopo una storica tournée europea, con clamorosi concerti in Italia, la band inizia a pensare al nuovo lavoro. E da una terrazza di un hotel di Napoli, di prima mattina, con la città stranamente deserta, Banks e Rutherford hanno l’idea di come sarebbe il mondo una volta che la civiltà umana si fosse estinta. E la immaginano con un intro di melletron davvero soprannaturale, che per oltre un minuto e mezzo prelude alla voce di Gabriel, affilata e potente. Così inizia Watcher Of The Sky. Così Inizia Foxtrot. Uscito nell’ottobre 1972, il disco è un capolavoro, il primo di un trittico eccezionale, e uno dei più amati dai fan. La macchina musicale e autorale è un complesso gioco di ingranaggi, ricchissima di invenzioni sonore e liriche. Dopo l’inizio leggendario di Watcher Of the Sky (che diverrà l’apertura classica dei live del periodo), Time Table, con elegante intro pianistico di Banks, è una amara riflessione, quasi romantica, sulla decadenza e la caducità delle cose. Poi Get 'Em Out By Friday è una trovata geniale di Gabriel, una sorta di mini opera rock dove Gabriel canta cambiando toni e timbro diversi personaggi e che parla di una colossale speculazione edilizia, con susseguente sfratto di decine di povere famiglie, e che viene proiettata in un futuro alla 1984 di Orwell (ma Gabriel sceglie il 2012 come anno futuro). Poi altro classico in Can-Utility And The Coastliners, che riprende la leggenda nordica del re Canuto il Grande (da cui il gioco di parole Can-Utility) che la leggenda narra pose il suo trono davanti alla acque per provare ai suoi sudditi di essere non invincibile, finendo per perire tra i flutti. Il dolce strumentale Horizons eseguito da Steve Hackett in punta di plettro è quasi un’introduzione alla lunghissima, affascinante Supper’s Ready, altra capitale opera rock (da 23 minuti, l’intero lato b), dove Gabriel immagina una sorta di lotta tra bene e male nella storia di due giovani innamorati che viaggiano per mondi magici. Il brano, diviso in sette parti, è così stupendo che merita un piccolo approfondimento: Lover's Leap  è un dolce preludio al viaggio dei due verso la magia, che continua con The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man, dove i protagonisti della storia si avviano in una città dominata dalle due figure di un contadino e un santone che dicendo di saper governare il fuoco ipnotizza tutti gli abitanti costringendoli a firmare un contratto, il guardiano del Santuario Eterno; Ikhnaton and Itsacon and Their Band of Merry Men descrive come i due generali del santone (Akhenaton è il nome di un Faraone dell'antico Egitto, mentre Itsacon è un gioco di parole che deriva da It's a con, "è un truffatore”) guidano l’esercito  delle forze del male inviato dal custode del Santuario Eterno per uccidere tutti coloro che non hanno ancora firmato la pace e il contratto, che si rivela una "Licenza di Eterno Asilo"; How Dare I Be So Beautiful? che vede una musica più elegante e calma è l’incontro degli innamorati con un Narciso moderno innamorato della sua immagine che si specchia nell’acqua; Willow Farm è invece il posto dove i due innamorati, che come Narciso vengono risucchiati dall’acqua, si ritrovano, dove con un fischio tutto si trasforma e il testo descrive figure tipiche dell’immaginario campestre inglese (da un Winston Churchill en travesti al papà che sta in ufficio mentre la mamma a casa lava i panni, dove risuona il carillon (The Musical Box) di Nursery Cryme); Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet), in gran parte strumentale, è uno dei passaggi chiavi della musica Genesis, con lavoro immenso di Collins alla batteria, di Banks all’organo, con storico assolo, e descrive come i due innamorati, trasformatisi in semi, aspettino l’Apocalisse biblica, che poi nella conclusiva As Sure as Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet) non solo si ricongiunge con l’inizio di Supper’s Ready, ma delinea un mondo circolare di vita e morte verso una nuova Gerusalemme. Se mi sono permesso di dilungarmi tanto è perché mai nella storia della musica si era arrivati a tanta ricchezza e complessità, e da sola Supper’s Ready vale l’eternità musicale alla band. Dopo il bellissimo Genesis Live (1973) nel 1973 la meraviglia continua prima con il leggendario Selling England By The Pound e poi, nel 1975, con l’altrettanto epocale The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, opera rock incredibile. Dopo quel disco, Gabriel se ne va, e finisce un’epoca. Ma rimangono queste gemme preziose a ricordarci che cosa erano capaci di fare.
