I keep flirting w the idea of resin and going back to "I wanna make dice" but no. just. no no no. I do want to make dice but It's not happening. Every time I start to think about it again I see some humbling shit about microplastics and suddenly desperately want to repent my sins and never touch plastic again.

I will use the rest of the resin jugs I have now and then I Might sometimes use UV resin as an accent on other artwork, or occasionally cast specific pieces. but I'm retiring the whole idea of Being A Resin Artist. It's cool and fun and I can't fucking keep doing it.

anytime I have to throw away something that didn't turn out, any time I have to use the Dremel or sand down the edges of a new piece, it makes me absolutely sick to my soul what I'm doing. Like I actually honest to god cannot live with myself as a fucking plastics manufacturer. I can't do it. I live on the shores of Lake Michigan and every time I rinse off a sanded down piece of resin im literally dumping plastic directly into that lake. That's disgusting. That goes against everything I've ever fucking believed since I was a tiny little child.

I still can't bring myself to call art resin "evil" on par with industrial plastics manufacturers, but every day I look at how many things around me are already made of plastic and aren't broken down yet- packaging. the handles on brushes. the handles on drawers. phone cases. shoes, tires, clothing- and I think about how much microplastic is already in our fucking bodies, and in the bodies of newborn babies, and in the bodies of fish in the sea, and in the rain. and then I think about how much more is out there waiting to break down, and I wonder, is the plastic in the ecosystem now just the tip of the iceberg? Even if we stopped using plastic globally tomorrow, how much more is still out there, in storage, unused in the basements and closets of our homes-- or currently in use!!-- patiently waiting to turn into microplastics hundreds of years down the line?

and then I look at the shit I'm making with resin and sure it's cool. it's very nice stuff. but absolutely none of it was fucking worth contributing to that. None of it. Not for a moment.

Yes, there are certain types of art you can only make with resin. It has a really cool effect on anything you put into it. It's super useful as a sealant. And for some things, plastic is the ONLY substance we can use for that item. Some things NEED that kind of packaging- notably medical supplies- but there's plenty of certain artwork you couldn't make without plastic, too. I hate the idea of a world without sopopomo's resin sculptures. Like, this is some of the coolest shit known to man, LOOK AT IT??? Im also a fan of those big log-resin tables, and like, those surf boards like rusted indigo does. I wouldn't dream of asking artists like this to stop using this medium, especially when they've clearly mastered it.

But your choice of material does end up saying something in the end. Thinking about the source of your materials and inspiration is part of the artistic process, but I really don't see any other resin artists talking about this... (Probably bc they stopped being resin artists if they felt this way, ig?) I mean I've seen some talk about the health hazards for YOU, because resin is also a freaky scary substance to fuck up with and it can burn your skin and give you lung issues and shit, in addition to being THE most harshly unforgiving art medium I've ever encountered.

But it kinda makes me feel insane? To be the only one wondering about this? Like the art you can make with resin is so beautiful, but it comes at SUCH a steep and ugly cost- and not just to your own health but to the environment and people and animals directly around you (you really need to have proper ventilation and full PPE to work with resin. and even cured resin, though nontoxic, can hurt you. Ever gotten a paper cut from freshly-cast plastic? It fucking SUCKS).

And it's so contradictory to me?? bc so many resin artists market themselves as like these witchy, down to earth, inspired-by-nature type of people, who are selling art to the same crowd. Myself included! There is enormous irony in saying "I love nature :)" and then encasing it in a vacuum sealed toxic plastic tomb. This was not lost on me personally, but I seem to be the only one who wants to like. Talk about it. Or address it as part of my artists statement, even. I feel crazy for it!!!! :/ I'm literally not even saying we should stop using resin as an art medium. I am licherally about to go pour some lmfao. I'm just asking like. What does it say about you as an artist-- what statement are you making with your art-- if that contradiction itself is the very approach? I don't know. I don't have an answer to that question and personally that makes me wanna back off, that's all I'm saying.

Like it's not really a moral judgement on other resin artists. I'm not saying all resin artists should want to quit. I know that EVEN COMBINED, all the individual resin artists in the world couldnt produce more trash than Nestle if we tried. this is about me, not about you.

It's just, after my friends supported me SO much in opening my Etsy shop, there's understandably a lot of questions about why I stopped posting/listing shit. it was admittedly going very well.

I just dont feel good about helping Nestle produce more trash lmfao! I don't think they need my help!

Cus again, who's paying the true cost at the end of the day? It's not just the monetary cost of the resin. If we're paying for Nestles & cos pollution, who's paying for mine? My lungs? My family's lungs? My cats, if they were to ever be exposed or get hurt on resin scraps? The wild animals and plants of this place I claim to love so much, who are just swallowing my garbage whole??

Like nobody else has to consider that if they don't want to. But that stuff matters to me. And it's worth so much more to me than a bunch of plastic keychains and shit that won't even sell for enough to buy me a week's worth of groceries.

Cus I see all the trash *I* manage to produce, as just one guy. then I think about, what about all the unused, unsecured resin in the world from people who didn't research proper disposal? From corporate manufactures who didn't care about regulations? What about all the uncured liquid components that never got disposed of properly! What about when wildlife inevitably gets into all that shit someday?

I walk along the beach and I pick up discarded scraps of plastic and broken beach toys in my spare time. and these days I think, "in 50 to 100 years this is exactly where all my lovingly crafted hard work will end up. with someone just like me picking up the pieces of trash on the beach." that's actually why I called my Etsy shop Rats Trash Stash. It was cheeky, and more about my skill level with resin than anything else, but the more I thought about it, the more it was eerily on the nose.

so anyway. y'all aren't my Instagram followers so you don't even know what I'm talking about and this means nothing to you lmfao... but it kinda sucks that resin as an art form kind of only became so widely available in the same breath as "we need to drastically reduce our plastics consumption."

Maybe in a world where every single thing isn't manufactured in the cheapest most toxic possible way, maybe in a world where corporations were forced to take responsibility for their garbage- maybe in that world, plastic has a small enough impact overall that it wouldn't tear me up like this to do resin art. but we don't live there. and I can't keep doing this shit, I'm literally losing sleep over it.

Anyway I'm writing all this bc in order to finish using said resin I have to go pour some. And it's just turned into this whole Thing now every time I get an idea I wanna pour, I have a whole ethical dilemma to work thru first before I can bring myself to mix a batch. So this is me attempting psyching myself up to go do that lmfao. 💀 I have a journal to finish.

But on that note, Ive actually super enjoyed making the journals and it's inspired me to get back into papermaking and bookbinding, so I think maybe I'll keep doing journals even after I put away the resin for good. We'll see. I dislike the idea of giving up resin tbh but the alternative seems much much worse.

in my experience using 3d shapes instead of flat construction shapes helps a lot if you want ur character art to have more depth and this is where i realize i have a picture for this actually

^^ on top of this if you draw digitally coloring in the sketch can make any imperfections with the shape n mass of what ur drawing more obvious and this can save you a lot of grief later if you go sketch->lineart->color and realize too late while coloring your foundation wasn't very good . also if you draw digitally try getting into the habit of flipping the canvas regularly that makes wonky shapes and skewed perspective more obvious too . ive seen the joke a lot of people being frustrated or embarrassed when they wait until the sketch is finished then flip the canvas and realize it looks really skewed which is very dumb to me because the sketch can just be a rough draft its fine . which on that note sketches are a thing you're probably going to have to iterate on over and over and over like it's not embarrassing if you don't get it right on the first try, best case scenario if its something i care about looking good at all it'll take me at least like 3-5 sketches. something something, sketches aren't the final so don't get caught up in the details right out the gate as a first step i see a lot of beginners get caught up in getting the head and face right first, THEN sketching the body after and maybe that works for some people just fine but in my experience personally if you loose sketch/figure sketch the whole body first no face no extreme detail at least you can work the pose out first before you waste your time getting caught up in details only to realize you don't have a great pose to go with it

also to you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, the line of action?

actually lastly uhh if youre relatively new to drawing seriously dont get caught up in trying to have an iconic artstyle or even a consistent art style (<- like consistency really doesn't matter unless ur making like a comic or animation obviously) but you really really don't have to focus on having an art style worked out within the first few years or first decade even of drawing seriously. An art style will come to you naturally over time. This isn't to say you can't draw how you want to draw, but if you over fixate on having a cool recognizable unique not like other artists art style right out the gate but without much of any studying of anatomy or how your favorite art styles work, you're probably not going to get very far with that. and most important art tip of them all; don't draw to impress people, don't draw for likes and shares, draw for you and make the art you want to see. hope this was comprehensible or helpful and that tumblr doesnt format the images weird . just trying to rattle off some things that helped me a lot . if this post sucks idk ask me again later

For me, being fictionkin is really hard, bc when im from a smaller media, and it’s seen as childish it’s hard for me. Also, sometimes being fictionkin makes me miss stuff I’ve never had. I feel, a lot of the times, wishing I could be back on Starhenge or Celestial island, or being up in the sky, or being with the other celestials. Sometimes when I vent this in tumblr it doesn’t go well, because people tell me im “delusional”, “being a kid”, or stuff like that.

I tried stuff like making the arm pieces I wear or trying to style my hair. But it seems to look less like myself and more like a crappy cosplay.

And on social medias, It’s hard seeing such hate against me. I don’t like seeing people rank monsters and place galvana as the worst, or saying it ruins starhenge. It doesn’t make me angry or sad, but I don’t blow it off. And I saw a drawing on deviant art with most of the celestials, and it was gory. It wasn’t filtered, so I got super overwhelmed from it bc seeing yourself covered in bl00d is super crazy for a fictionkin.

I do not believe AI generated images can be considered art and here is why

On top of this, lemme also tell you another reason why AI generated images cannot be considered art, and for that I'll have to explain what creativity is in my eyes.

My definition of creativity is "The ability to solve abstract problems." Machines aren't capable of abstract thinking, but human beings are. A machine doesn't put any thought into what it's doing, it has no understanding of intent. But human beings do.

It's really telling that a lot of people arguing against artists aren't artists themselves and thus don't get the nuances of art. For them it doesn't matter. A picture is a picture, what's the deal? But there's so much behind art, so many nuances, so many creative decisions and intents, there's so much underneath the journey. It's not about the final piece itself but the journey. There's no journey behind an AI generated image. Nothing. It's soulless. It's mass produced and incredibly cheaply so. You can see the seams where the molds met, the lacking quality of the materials, the badly applied paint, every single hallmark of a cheaply mass produced item.

"But photography killed painting/digital art killed traditional art/3D animation killed 2D animation" I have a box full of alcohol markers and other traditional art supplies, and I also own a camera as I'm an amateur photographer, AND I OWN A BUNCH OF SKETCHBOOKS AND PENCILS WHICH I USE REGULARLY DESPITE BEING A PREDOMINANTLY DIGITAL ARTIST. And guess what? Blender, a 3D modelling package, also has tools that lets you create 2D animations and blend them with 3D. And on top of that, did you forget how big the anime industry is? Y'know, the industry that produces 2D animations?

You have NO idea what you're talking about. Actually, stop speaking over artists if you're not one. Please. We provide you all this art for you to enjoy and what do we get in return? We get trampled on for seemingly no reason when we beg people to have basic respect for us. Why do you do this? Did we ever do anything to hurt you personally? Are you jealous bc we were born with some kind of a superpower and are special when we actually aren't?

No amount of inability to draw will change the fact that AI generated images aren't art. This isn't gatekeeping. I'm not physically restraining you from picking up a pencil to draw. This is fact. What you perceive as gatekeeping is artists simply defending their rights and integrity.

No, artists aren't gatekeepers. Never have been. A lot of us are more than happy when someone expresses interest in getting into art. We put out tutorials, timelapses, tips and other resources to make the learning progress less of a bumpy road. We love sharing art with each other.

The reality is, one of the biggest gatekeepers in art is nothing else but YOUR OWN mindset to approaching it. This belief that only people born with the talent can do it. You think we came out of the womb drawing the way we do? We didn't. It's a skill we're constantly practicing and improving. All of us have produced bad stuff but we kept going. We got up over and over again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. Tell me, of the skills you have learned, have you ever gotten anything perfect on your first try? Was your first attempt at cooking perfect? When you learned to ride the bike did you skip the training wheels and get it perfectly? Did you get perfect grades in school? Did you skip driving classes to get a driver's license immediately? (And if you immediately counter this with "duh you need driving classes so you aren't dangerous in traffic" you missed the point, hell I'm gonna assume you missed it on PURPOSE.)

Art isn't talent. It's a skill. Artists aren't special. We're just people who kept persevering, who kept believing in ourselves, that we could one day be great, and perhaps even greater. Kill the idea it's an inherent talent. Kill it for once and for all. It has dealt an unimaginable amount of damage to society and culture.

One more thing. If visual art isn't your thing or is completely inaccessible for you but you develop a knack for writing, you can just do that. Writing is a form of art. People have written vividly beautiful descriptions of things. And if prose isn't your thing, you can simply do scriptwriting instead. It's still art. You're still telling a story. One that is deeply personal to you.

any art tips for a beginner who like literally j u s t started trying to teach themselves how to draw?

- Always keep a sketchbook and draw from observation. Don't worry about trying to make every page and every drawing a mini masterpiece. Sketchbooks are for thinking and figuring stuff out especially when you're just starting out. You're first sketches/pages will always be the worst because your hand and your mind are still loosening up but the more you keep at it the better they will become.

- You don't have to just do studies and still lifes all the time u can draw a bunch of anime and cartoons and shitty little mindless scribbles. Who's gonna stop you? Your mom? The president? Literally just draw whatever you want. As a beginner one of the most important things is to get yourself in the habit of drawing as much as possible because mileage is how you improve. Later on your own natural curiosity will push you towards more specific areas of study but for now just try to develop the habit and mindset of being Someone Who Draws TM. Just draw! Draw draw draw!!!

- Comparison will kill you but it's also just human nature so try not to let it get u down too hard. If you find yourself dwelling too much on the emotional aspect of this try to turn it into a learning situation. What is it about this piece/artist that makes me feel inferior? What specifically do I admire about this? Try to think about the steps it took to create this work of art and then copy it. Stroke for stroke. Really look at, deconstruct it, shatter it into a million little pieces and then try to tape those pieces back together again as best u can. Use pipe cleaners and glitter glue if u have to. There's nothing wrong with copying a picture this is literally how u study technique. Masters studies are important!

- This one is specifically a new age online artist thing but don't worry about style. Your own personal style is something that develops over time and often times u won't even notice it I promise. It's just like handwriting. You should really only worry about style once u move past the beginning/fundamentals stage and start learning about design. Seriously tho don't overthink it. Remember that you have to know the rules before you can break them.

- There WILL be days where u feel like every single thing u draw is absolute shit-tier garbage and should burn in hell for all eternity and I'm sorry to say but that just comes with the territory of being an artist. But fear not! This is usually the result of ur eyes/mind developing faster than ur hand can keep up with. When this happens try focusing on doing studies and exercises. I PROMISE you it will pass and you WILL come out the other end of it a fundamentally better artist. 100% every time. Do not let it get you down. DO NOT LET IT WIN!!!

- On the flip side of that there will be days where everything u draw is 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯😜😜😜😍😍😍👌👌👌😎😎😎👑👑👑 and u should 100% EMBRACE THE FUCK OUT OF THAT FEELING!!! ALWAYS TAKE PRIDE IN UR ACCOMPLISHMENTS!!! - This next point is from the "things I desperately wish I could tell my past self" category so feel free to ignore this if u really want but please please please no matter how far u get into ur artistic journey DO NOT throw away/delete ur old stuff because u feel ashamed of it. You will 100% regret doing this EVERY SINGLE TIME. Maybe not immediately and maybe not even for a few years. But trust me. Not having ur old stuff to look back on FUCKING SUCKS and is a very cruel thing to do to urself. - Just have fun honestly. If you don't enjoy art why do it? Spite? Actually spite is kind of a funny reason but u should still enjoy art nonetheless lmao. Go at ur own pace and don't be so hard on yourself all the time. Art is not a destination it's a journey and if you're not enjoying the journey why are u still on the bus? I love drawing and I always try to improve!! But I''ve been losing motivation lately because I try to draw stuff that might be pretty easy for other artists but I struggle with them A LOT.

I KNOW I shouldn't compare myself to others if it's gonna demotivate me but I just can't help it! I see other VERY talented people draw AMAZINGLY and feels so impossible to do and it makes me feel like I don't know how to draw at ALL

I also tried digital art but I don't get how people do it. Maybe it's because I don't have the best app? Most of the better digital art apps aren't free so I'm only limited to the free ones.

Plus I draw with my finger on my tablet.

And I installed a digital drawing app on my laptop but I suck at it. HOW DO PEOPLE DRAW ON A LAPTOP???

I just, need some motivation? And maybe some art tips?? I struggle THE MOST with fingers/hands and well drawing bodies. When I look at something and try to draw it exactly how it is I can do it! But drawing whatever I like (without it being a picture in front of me) is a HUGE challenge for me...

i totally feel you. im in the exact same boat! idk how other people perceive my skill level lol but i struggle A Lot! it takes me a lot of time and effort to get my art to a point that i feel okay about sharing it. even stuff that seems simple probably took me a while haha. and i know that feeling of looking at other really amazing artists and feeling kind of crushed that you can't be like them. it's really hard not to compare and get down on yourself. but since you're gonna be comparing anyway lol try to compare your work with your old work, to appreciate how far you've come! that helps me. i have some EXTREMELY cringey art still on my blog and you really don't have to go that far back in the tag to find it alskdfjaljsfd like stuff that im SUPER embarrassed about now but i can't bring myself to delete them bc it's kinda nice to be able to go back at say, "i was really proud of this drawing when i made it but wow, that is. Terrible. u know what u call that? ✨growth✨"

the truth is, there will always be people who are better than you at art, and that's ok! don't sweat it. art of various styles and skill levels can still be enjoyed. and you will only get better! my advice is to not put too much pressure on yourself. improvement will come naturally as you just keep drawing and try to have fun with it.

it's also helpful to keep in mind that you are not the only one who struggles or feels inadequate. i'd venture to say that most artists feel that way, even popular or highly skilled ones! recently an artist that i really admire and consider the biggest art goals told me that their finished drawings have many layers of sketches and corrections and experimentations underneath. art takes effort for everyone, even your art senpais! ofc, certain things will come easier as you get better, but good artists are always pushing for improvement and expanding their skills so you'll probably always feel a bit out of your comfort zone and it's good to try to develop a healthy mindset about growth/development now

hahaha i used to draw with my finger on my phone too before I got a drawing tablet. i prefer digital art because i totally abuse that undo button lol but it's fine if you prefer traditional art! i know some really amazing artists who do a lot of paper and pencil drawings—@tizzymcwizzy comes to mind!

Lol I also struggle with hands and bodies and I also have a super hard time drawing from my imagination! So I don’t 🤠 I use references for like every single thing I draw, and if you have to do that too, that’s ok! In fact, using refs is a good thing. Hopefully someday I won’t have to rely on them quite so heavily but using refs is always good practice! That’s how you learn what things look like and how to draw them lol.

oh i get it for sure! i've struggled for a LONG time with making my poses more dynamic, i'm not the best teacher but heres some things that might be helpful:

• When sketching a pose, stay zoomed out, so you can get a better picture of how fluid it is altogether- u could draw a super dynamic hand that looks awkward with the rest of the body, u know?

• References are your best friend, i personally love getty images bc they just have random stock photos of like...everything? for action poses, gymnasts and trapeze artists make thE BEST references, especially for superheroes

•I don't know your skill level but if you're new to working from reference or just newer at drawing full body in general, theres nothing wrong with doing a tiny bit of tracing, and I don't mean the whole thing because you probably won't learn that way. The tracing i'm talking about is drawing a couple guide lines over the reference image, and then using them lines as your base for the drawing. (I'm bad at words but i included a timelapse example below, its not the best example because i rushed it just now so i could put it in this answer so its not a very accurate study LOL but...you get the idea), it'll help you follow the reference without the daunting blank canvas, u know?

• try not to use too many straight lines, they aren't very fluid and they're quite rare in nature (i think?), man made things are often more straight but nature has a lot of curves, including humans!

• this is a smaller tip but one of my fav things to do is make the tilt of the head exactly opposite to the tilt of the shoulders, it looks soooooo good. it works with other things too, like...hips and shoulders, direction of clothing, hair etc...its hard to explain but i included another example below...just swapping it up a lot looks nice i think :3

thats all i can think of from me directly, however one of my favourite artists literally JUST uploaded a youtube video about dynamic poses so i recommend checking him out, heres the video, i recommend his other videos too though bc he has helped me sooo much and he's a very skilled teacher imo ^_^

hi chay. how does your art gets popular so quickly? I tag so many tags and reblog so many times but even days later its still like 40, 50 notes and half of them are my own reblogs. It gets really depressing and demotivating tbh and I feel like I shouldn't create anything anymore. maybe it is pretty shit.

Oh im sorry you feel demotivated, I know how much time and energy a creation of fanart can take and I totally get you!! It sucks when you dont get enough recognition. And no fanart is "shit" or "unworthy", notes maybe a form of recognition any artist needs and wants and its very valid but they aren't scale for the worth or the quality of your art!! Just a tip, make fanart for yourself and then decide to share it with other, you know what I mean?? When I feel unmotivated I just remember that I actually enjoy the process and I enjoy making something I had in my mind and when I wanna see some sort of creation that its not there I just say fuck it, I ll just make it for myself, because it feels good to be able to create something and you should be proud of that.

And I think liking a post is not enough for any creator of fanart of any sort (gifs, drawings, fics...etc) , reblogging is important to support these creators and to motivate them!! And one of the best parts of any fandom is having these people who dedicate their time and energy to create something (fics, art, gifs, vids...etc) and make it accessible and eventually making the whole fandom experience enjoyable, so yeah share the art <3
