#The tower princes
Text
Kirianthe really is the situationship of all time. You're trapped on a spaceship with a new name and a new dad and an old body and the rat girl you've been watching toy with/fumble the love of your life for the the past year. The only vaguely normal friendship you've ever had ended with him exploding in front of you. And yeah, she's a double-crossing dick, but you have the same awful taste in humor and women. What are you going to do, turn down the tacky outfits she makes you? Not come up with a secret handshake? Let her keep handling her sword like her douche of a cavalier when you get a chance to show off the one thing you're good at? Or just bite the bullet and make friendship bracelets about it?

I know some of y’all aren’t ready to hear it but Ianthe and Kiriona are Like That™ because the latter has never had a friend-friend before in her life! Sure it’s an incredibly toxic friendship and they also hate each other but like… are you telling me you don’t think Ianthe would build a creepy human skin blanket fort that Kiriona begrudgingly entered bc she’d never had a sleepover in her life??? Because that’s just not the world I live in.

I don’t have a theory per se yet, but I am stewing on the connection between the Tower Princes (Gideon and Ianthe) and the Prrinces in the Tower — the sons and heirs of King Edward IV, Edward V and his younger brother Prince Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York — they were locked in the Tower of London by their uncle (who was rumored and theorized to have murdered them) and who then took the throne himself as Richard III

god dammit. skimming through GTN looking for a quote and you know what I found?
you know what I fucking found?
"(i) [Harrow's death] was contingent on either the world's happiest accident or murder, and if it was murder, what if the murderer was, like, weird, which would make their subsequent marriage to Gideon pretty awkward? Maybe they could just swap friendship bracelets."

from a purely aesthetic point i appreciate all the fan art of ianthe and kiriona in gold for their tower prince getups because yeah it Looks Good, but ohhhhhh i long to see the white and silver.... the symbol of john's control over them, the proof that he is dressing them up like dolls in the colors he prefers, despite the way the silver clashes with kiriona's eyes and ianthe's golden arm... the way it's the wrong color for both of them but they're an extension of him so they have to match just like the lyctors in their gaudy pearlescent robes, everyone has to to be to his liking regardless of personal preference..........
i think of this often

Okay but I have to applaud Tamsyn Muir here, there is NO better way to pull off a plot twist reveal that a perceived ally is working with the enemy than have it be noticed that the fucking princes are wearing friendship bracelets oh my fucking god.

Ianthe looks like Coronabeth if Coronabeth was a shriveled up necro-rat. This technically makes her Gideon's ideal woman, and I'm not sure if Kiriona is honest enough with herself to confront that, but I'm sure Ianthe has put two and two together.

On Rivers, and Holes
Varun, via Judith: "they are coming out of their tower, salt thing. There is a hole at the bottom of their tower." (Chapter 27)
Me, half asleep: "heh, just like the Tower of London."
Me:
Tumblr media
I'd already been thinking for some time about how Ianthe and Kiriona are probably allusions the murdered tower princes (Edward V and Richard) from the Tower of London and this uh.
Tazmuir is at it again etc.
Specifically, in the Tower of London complex, there's a place called Dead Man's Hole:
This unassuming alcove in London’s famous Tower Bridge once served to capture, store, and display dead bodies from the River Thames.
(source: Atlas Obscura)
A hole used to catch and hold dead bodies floating down a River, you say? Where have we heard about a problem river before...
oh yes HtN, of course, thank you Abigail Pent (Chapter 45):
“A spirit can be trapped,” said Abigail, “trapped as every spirit in the River is trapped …"
"Something has gone terribly wrong in the River, Harrow, and I wish you’d find out what.”
HMMMMM
What is the Tower then, a plug? A sieve? A pulling black hole? (Dominicus?) A lure or a block?

So what’s the consensus on the Richard III references (i.e. the Two Princes and the Tower Princes)? Because the most I can glean is “two doomed kids foolishly left in the care of a mad king” but if anyone knows of, like, specific quotes or plot points…?
