[First concepts]

. Okay so bear with me (and my obvious cringe lol). I was 15 ish when I got the idea for this story after going to an exhibit about fancy clothes that had gemstones sewn into them. I was with a friend on a vacation to her parents ranch out in West Texas hence the setting of a ranch. . First page is a crudely drawn map of the area so I could block where the murders would happen in the story. Next up is my cast list and the first instance of Amber and the "Court of Jewels" where several of the members didn't make it into Fragments of Magic (Lapis Lazuli, Opal, and Topaz). . Next is the first page of writing... it's hard to look back at this but I'm glad I still have it as a reminder of how far I've come ^^; . Onto the plot... this attempt was HEAVILY influenced by Nancy Drew and by Scooby-Doo meets the Boo Brothers in which there was supposed to be a treasure hunt across the property along with the murders and such. One thing I remember being really meticulous about was mentioning that the rose bushes in front of the house were white, because I wanted them to be a give away of a murder that happened later when they were suddenly red from having taken in blood. I'd read about a legend/superstition of Cherry Blossom trees doing the same thing in a manga once and thought that'd be the coolest thing ever. . All in all, I wrote 58 pages in the composition notebook for this plot before deciding I was done with it. I let my mom read it once and she's been asking me about revisiting it ever since cx . So when I was looking for a name for this new character in a red dress that I'd drawn I decided I wanted to give Amber another shot at a story and recycled her from this story along with the newly minted Jeweled Court. . QotD: do you ever recycle characters or settings from your older works? . AotD: yes, surprisingly quite a few of my characters are recycled from my teenage years (Amber, Creeto, Reinwald and the Jeweled Court)

First & Last Lines

I did this a million years ago. I just got reminded of it and thought it would be fun to do again. Basically, post the first and last lines of the last 10 fics you posted. WIPs are welcome. Not going with any sort of strict rules, because that’s just not how I roll. Anyway, here goes!

1. hope for the future, teen wolf, derek hale/peter hale

First: As Derek flew back from his uncle's punch, he wondered just how he hadn't realized sooner that Peter was the alpha—that he was his alpha.

Last: He couldn't say he'd ever be be content with the past or that he was happy in the present, but for the first time in years he had hope for the future, and maybe that would be enough.

2. 3 Sentence Ficathon 2024: Teen Wolf, multiple pairings

First: Derek leans his head back so he can stare at the star-studded tree canopy overhead and thinks, not for the first time, that he will never get tired of seeing Stiles’ magic.

Last: “Easy for you and Derek to say—you were both born like this and you took away my chance to get out of this life,” Scott rages back, the arrows hitting Stiles in his soft parts just like they have every time he’s hurled them over the years since Stiles got him turned into a werewolf.

3. 3 Sentence Ficathon 2024: Chosen One, macy blake’s chosen one universe, multiple pairings

First: “I just feels it lacks a certain gravitas,” Eduard says, tugging at the hem of the denim jacket he considers so ugly he wonders if some of his mates are pulling a prank on him until he turns around and sees all eight of them staring at him in a distinctly horny fashion.

Last: “Fucking lions—you’re lucky I love you.”

4. with lightning in his hands, teen wolf, derek hale/peter hale/stiles stilinski

First: Stiles stares at the ruins of the Hale house and reflects that he perhaps should have taken Deaton more seriously when he told him starting to practice magic would change how he saw the world.

Last: All they have to do is wait for him to come.

5. time travel, teen wolf, derek hale/laura hale

First: Derek bursts through the door of his little apartment in New York City, yelling for his sister.

Last: "It all started in seven days from now for you and five years ago for me."

6. telepathy, black jewels, daemon sadi/lucivar yaslana

First: She’s not trustworthy.

Last: They exited the room without opposition, knowing their point was made and would not be forgotten.

7. dusk, the witcher, emhry var emreis/geralt of rivia

First: Geralt stands on the balcony outside of Emhyr’s rooms and watches the day fade into dusk

Last: Geralt could get used to having a family.

8. Trading Up, teen wolf, derek hale/stiles stilinski

First: Stiles and his (maybe?) girlfriend are walking down Main Street after dinner, holding hands and looking in the shop windows

Last: “Damnit, I need to see if I have to do actual work. While I’m checking my email, you should try to guess why Lydia didn’t turn into a werewolf. You’ll never get it, but it will entertain you while you wait,” Stiles tells Derek, then turns his attention to his laptop.

9. candy, macy blake’s chosen one universe, victor eastaughffe/orsen riggs & gus

First: “Bear!” Gus shrieks from his seat at the table.

Last: “You may have gummy bears after dinner, Gus.”

10. drift, perilous courts by tavia lark, julien sandry/whisper

First: Julien watches Whisper in the sunlight.

Last: “We’ll make sure we win.”

Only a few days until Eris Vanserra Week!!!!

And in preparation, I thought I would give you all a look at my line up for the event!

Day 1 - Brotherhood/Family: "The Soft Heart and the Little Fox" A follow up to my "The Soft Heart and the Shadow" fic. Can you guess who the little fox is?

Day 2 - High Lord/Heir: "Publicly Pleasing, Silently Drowning" Eris deals with what he must do in public to appease his father and his own private feelings.

Day 3 - Secrets/Fire: "Fire Alarm" Cooking with fire is not that easy...especially when combined with copious amounts of whiskey, nosy brothers, and mating bonds.

Day 4 - Hounds/Autumn Equinox: "A Second Chance" A fic from the same universe as my ongoing piece "And So Our Lives Begin" involving Vanserra brother bonding and smoke hound puppies.

Day 5 - Dancing: Title TBD. Eris and Nesta use dance to escape, and find themselves working through traumas together at the same time. Featuring their very, very nosy mates.

Day 7 - Free Day: The highly anticipated Azris Resolution chapter to my ongoing fic "3 Jewels in the Hewn City". Shadow and Flame necklaces were promised, and will be delivered. Plus a leash...but of what kind? On who? And when all is said and done, who will end up on top?

I'm very excited to share these works with you all! Writing for two event weeks in a row while starting grad school has been a task and a half, but I'm so happy with the results and I hope you are too.

If I have time, I have an AU in mind for Day 6, but it's a piece that deserves to have enough time and research dedicated to it, so I might not make it in time to post on that day. @erisweek2023

Princess Sofia's Crown

Princess Sofia Albertina's Crown (sometimes spelt Sophia Albertina), made in 1771 by Johan Adam Marcklin, is the crown of Princess Sofia. The crown was made for the princess to mark the occasion of her brother, King Gustav III's coronation.

Princess Sofia Albertina was the last living member of the old Holstein-Gottorp dynasty, and for a huge part of her life, she acted as the country's First Lady together with her sister-in-law, Princess Hedvig Elisabet Charlotta. Queen Sofia Magdalena was rather shy and didn't care much for social life, a role the more social and outgoing Sofia Albertina had no problem filling.

Apart from the sister of a previous monarch, Sofia Albertina was the last Abbess of Quedlinburg and, thus, a reigning vassal of the Holy Roman Empire. Due to her rank, extended network and important and influential position at the Swedish Royal Court, she was a crucial player in King Karl XIV Johan's plan of getting accepted as first Crown Prince and then monarch of a new dynasty.

In more recent times, the crown was used at the christening of Princess Victoria before she was made into Crown Princess and, therefore, ranked higher and got assigned a different crown. As of 2015, it's now the crown of another Sofia - Princess Sofia.

So I started A Court of Thorns and Roses the other day, and actually made some progress before bed last night (Stardew Valley 1.6 is out, I dunno what you want from me). I am 90 pages in and I have something to tell fans of this series.

Acotar is Strictly Worse Black Jewels series.

I read Throne of Glass years ago and in the back it had an interview with Maas. One of the questions was about her favorite authors and she mentioned Anne Bishop. I could see some of the inspirations she took from it: the salt mines being a prison, a badass assassin girl, stuff like that.

But ho-lee shit.

Lucien is, so far, Lucivar--he even uses the phrase "old son." I dunno who Tamlin is supposed to be, but the Fae are clearly the Blood. High Fae are likely Warlord Princes and Queens. Having different fae that are different species is LITERALLY the Kindred. I'm just waiting to see where Kaelas and Ladvarian are. And Andras the wolf? It's that Arcerian cat coat Karla sees someone wearing, and finds herself horrified to find that that cat was a witch and they slaughtered her for her skin.

"But Tabby," you ask, "why do you say strictly worse?"

I Capital H HATE keeping things from the reader by not telling the main character. I get it; Feyre is our conduit into this new world she's in. It's a writing technique as old as time. But nobody tells her anything, so we're just frustrated waiting for the story to start.

Black Jewels gives us a prologue that introduces the main plot and a character we will never have the pleasure of reading from the perspective of again, and why. After that, the book assumes you are in the world and doesn't hold back. It shows Lucivar and Daemon in their slave conditions. It shows Saetan growing tired of his vigil waiting for Witch. And it doesn't wait; Lucivar meets Jaenelle in the first chapter, first scene. And his last line in that scene? "Witch now walked the realms." It's the plot in action.

A Court of Thorns and Roses keeps threatening violence. So far these have been so empty I don't believe them. Black Jewels shows the torture the slaves undergo, and the responses Lucivar and Daemon inflict on their captors. Daemon is not called the Sadist for no reason. In Heir, Jaenelle literally splatters a man around the room. And the Kindred aren't safe either; the end of Heir shows how a unicorn kills a man, and it is pretty fucked up.

So why is Acotar popular and Black Jewels is not? So far, it looks like it's because Acotar doesn't come with the triggering content Black Jewels does.

Black Jewels has genital mutilation, pedophilia, child abuse, sexual slavery, rape, literal actual gaslighting, animal cruelty, and probably more but it's been a few years since I read this, my favorite series.

Again, I am 90 pages into A Court of Thorns and Roses, so I may be wrong. Maybe it gets better. Maybe they stop hiding information from the main character for no damn reason. Maybe they do stop talking about ripping someone into ribbons and actually do the deed.

But Acotar fans, I am BEGGING you. Give Black Jewels a try. A major criticism is that it's very gendered, and you know what? They're right. But you will be so surprised at the similarities, it will be as if Maas wrote another 11-12 books in the Acotar series.

Idk if you've been asked this recently (very sorry if have, feel free to just delete this), but do you have any tips for creating your own pantheon? I'm currently trying to make one for my own fantasy world (that could easily become just my own personal pantheon to work with as a witch), but I keep hitting roadblocks. Mainly due to the fact that I want them to have multiple domains (ideally 3-4 things they're considered to be connected with) but, like, how do I know which ones? How do I decide their symbolism? Do they have holy tenants they would like their followers to adhere to?

Basically, I get very overwhelmed trying to create the small details before I really even have the big details and it's very frustrating. Any advice? Or maybe just a list of details that need to be known/created first. I don't even know at this point.

When I was first making/working with The Jeweled Court I found this discussion by @thiscrookedcrown to be the most helpful thing ever! Here's more info from a previous ask I answered that goes into some more detail about how I made my pantheon! As for details to know/ think about:

This is a lot so I'mma cut it to save your dash :'D

Step 1: BARE BONES- WHO ARE THEY? One thing that really helped me was deciding what "element" my god/desses would reside over first. I had 12 elements and 10 gods to work with so from there it was just divvying up who got what. That being said YES there are STILL some overlaps. The link/discussion by @thiscrookedcrown was the most helpful to me here as it talked about Realms of Influence which helped me get things into perspective when figuring out who everyone was. Example: +The Sapphire Queen is my Goddess of the Oceans +The Pearl Empress is my Goddess of Freshwater/Lakes and Rivers Both are technically water based but The Sapphire Queen is the one who I associate the most with Water as an element because Oceans are just that much bigger than lakes and rivers.

Example: +The Sapphire Queen's realm of influence includes Travel (By Boat) +Lord Diamond God of Wind's realm of influence also includes Travel (By Land) Example: +The Emerald God is the God of the Harvest (Food related) +The Pearl Empress is the Goddess of the Harvest (Season related) AND HEY: It's okay if there is overlap! There is nothing wrong with overlap just as long as you can know at a glance who goes with what.

Step 2: BROAD DETAILS- GROUPING THINGS TOGETHER So that was my first real step in piecing it all together. So once I got my Elements placed with my Gods I went further into ANYTHING that could be associated with that element (granted this took me a long time to iron out and a lot of musing and thinking 'Oh hey that might be cool for XYZ' Example: +The Gold Knight- God of the Sun and Elemental Master of Light +Lord Ruby- God of the Hearth and Elemental Master of Flames

Both of these guys have Candles as part of their associations as candles have both Flame and produce Light. HOWEVER: Bonfires would be ONLY for Lord Ruby as it is definitely more flame related and Lanterns would be ONLY for The Gold Knight as they are there to produce light. Something else I found really helpful was to go by Aesthetics and what felt right/seemed right for each god/dess. (The Pearl Empress got a lot of fruit associations this way as she's a Goddess of seasons)

Step 3: SYMBOLISM- +AESTHETICS GALORE+ Since my Pantheon is partially Pop Culture inspired I had a base starting point for what I could count as symbols for several of my god/desses.

Example: +The Silver Lady- Goddess of the Moon and Elemental Master of Space (a very loose interpretation from Princess/Neo Queen Serenity from Sailor Moon. Thus from that I was able to start with a basic idea of symbolic things)

Associated with:The Stars, Navigation, Darkness, The Moon, Hope Other Names: Serenity, Luna,Selene Symbols: (Most things found/referenced in the Manga/anime) Rabbits Crescent Moon Rhinestones Compasses Lotus blossoms Dresses Cats Crystals Sweets Star Candy Opal Moonstone Silver

Colors: (When choosing Colors I got a flash of the Silver Millennium Kingdom set against the backdrop of space) Dark Blues Deep Purples Silver White Mythical Animals: Pegasus (Helios Reference)

So for those particular God/desses it was easier and from that base I was able to have similar ideas for the other gods who weren't from other pop culture. Some were very basic/bare bones for a long time.

Example: +The Obsidian Emperor

Death, Protection, Spirit

Associated with:

Smithing, Metalwork, Death, Omens, Divination, Mining

Other Names: N/A

Symbols:

Chains

Metallic colors

Metal Jewlery

Hammer

Shield

Raven

Bones

Pendulumns

So don't worry if you don't have the exact specifics right away. Building is a long journey and discovering things as you go along is part of the fun :)

Step 4: RELATIONSHIPS- TOUGH LOVE OR GENTLE GUIDE? Using your current base from steps 1-3 can help identify what kind of personality they might exhibit. If you still feel stumped feel free to lean on an alignment chart for guidance!

From learning HOW your god/dess acts you can then figure out what kinds of people will follow them.

Example: +The Gold Knight- God of the Sun and Keeper of Justice +Lord Diamond- God of Wind and Trickster Deity

A thief would most likely follow Lord Diamond's teachings than The Gold Knight's.

Now you can move into how to followers might show reverence to the gods by looking through your symbols and their personalities.

Example: +Princess Amethyst- Goddess of Time and Knowledge: Followers often wear necklaces that contain sand in them to represent an hourglass +The Sapphire Queen- Followers will carve hair ornaments out of driftwood to wear showing their devotion.

Step 5: DEPICTIONS- WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?

This step was hard for me, for a while they had no real forms but I decided that had to change and so I made designs for them keeping everything from the previous steps in mind. The drawing was the easy part once I had all my ducks in a row ^^

From Top to Bottom: Princess Amethyst, Lord Diamond, The Emerald God, The Gold Knight, The Obsidian Emperor, The Pearl Empress, Princess Rose Quartz, The Sapphire Queen and The Silver Lady

it would have been simply hilarious if azul's bio dad really was eaten by his mom to stay true to real life octopuses but no twst just isn't brave enough to have the non humans behave non humanely 😔🤟 /hj though if they did this his mom would have died too and he would be an orphan 💔 orphaned AND bullied??? too many Ls for this babygirl I fear

He would take so many Ls if I wrote him more like the octopus in the sea. When I learned that both male (if he isn’t killed/eaten) and female octopus defend the eggs until their deaths, I felt so bad for Azul. He really is maidenless his entire life, finds a sweetheart to mate with, and then they both die. T_T

Orphaned and bullied... AAAA NOOO :( that’s too many Ls for my babygirl Zuzu. He needs some Ws and a loving family in his life. But I really enjoy it when there are small details that suggest he’s not as human as he looks.
