Thérèse Dreaming - Balthus (1938) and Maya Hawke’s Blue Hippo
Art and historical context are a hard conversation in the face-value world we live in today. I hope to create a comfortable space for discussion and learning. These posts will discuss various topics that some may find triggering or unpleasant. I will be talking about the following hard topics: Nudity, misogyny, sex, pornography, abuse, and pedophelia (though nothing graphic).
Thérèse Blanchard was a neighbor of the artist. The exact nature of their relationship is unknown, nor her exact age. Though the range is about eleven to fourteen, most sources say eleven. Balthus and Thérèse may have had a strictly artistic relationship. She may have just modeled for him, but the nature of the work depicting Thérèse is undeniably sexual. Did she know the connotations of her pose at such a tender age? A lot has been said and assumed about the young woman. It is extremely possible that she was abused, and it is definite that her body was exploited in the paintings. Maya Hawke’s music video for ‘Blue Hippo’ and the song ‘Thérèse’ shine a new light on her. They are the emancipation of a previously unheard girl in art history. The song had a life. She had interests and memories and feelings - she was a real person. There is a sense of catharsis in setting Thérèse free. Not only for women who have been sexually exploited, but also the inner child and girl at heart., in the video she makes her an artist herself. In giving Thérèse a story: she liberates.
“Thérèse does not belong to you
The horses, cars, and cowboys do,”
- Maya Hawke, Thérèse
Carolyn Gage’s The Crimes Against Thérèse Blanchard is an excellent and harsh takedown of the work, opting to not even include an image of the painting. Thérése’s parents are said to be restaurant workers. One can theorize that her parent’s accepted the form of payment for her modeling - if she was paid at all. Her Parisian neighbor Balthus painted 10 (known) works of her from 1938 to 1940. These range from innocent studies, portraits, and the famous perversions. One source says that Blanchard died at Twenty five. It makes me very emotional to think about how she never got the opportunity to tell her story.
See part 1, 2, coming soon: 3
In the next part I will show visual examples of what Maya writes in the songs. Lots of pictures and things! It might take a little while. I will also be discussing symbolism. will get darker so I apologize for that. Thank you for reading and dealing with my typing errors. Dyslexia will not stop me from talking about art! Cheers xx.

Vulgar, disgusting, improper, Volatile
Are they talking about her or dreaming?
Is it horrid that she is thinking
Or worse that you don't know what about?
The problem was never how the child was sitting
(They never had a problem with a young girls promiscuity, not really)
You will never really know what she's thinking
Threatening your need for total control
I am (not) sorry this one thing was not made for you
I am (not) sorry to be made in her image
You are not sorry you want to take us both down
"I will dream of Thérèse as she dreamed for me"

Propaganda
Mbissine Thérèse Diop (Black Girl)—She’s a Senegalese actress known for starring in Black Girl, one of the first African films to receive international attention/acclaim. So much of the movie relies on her ability to convey her character’s sense of isolation/loneliness, she’s so amazing, I really wish she had acted more. However, she just recently appeared in the film Cuties!
Myrna Loy (The Thin Man, Manhattan Melodrama, Mr Blandings Builds his Dream House)—Started out a slinky silent screen vamp. Became a screwball lead who had a blast drinking, being married to William Powell, solving mysteries, and taking her dog everywhere in the Thin Man Movies. Broke our hearts in The Best Years of Our Lives and played a string of dream wives. Remained hot the entire time. Decades of hotness.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Mbissine Thérèse Diop:

Myrna Loy:
Tumblr media
Myrna Loy excelled at playing coy women, so common in screwball comedies in the 40s. She batted her lashes, and shrugged with grace, and made her costars look like foolish heels next to her. She charmed with sneaky elegance, well-placed pouting, and repartee. Besides, she was sultry AF.
While Myrna certainly looked hot in some her earlier vampy exotic bad girl roles, I think shes hottest when her comedic chops got to be displayed. Her dry wit, comedic timing, and subtle facial expressions make her the queen of deadpan snark.
Tumblr media
She's just very Mother
So beautiful and popular she was crowned Queen of the Movies in 1936, Myrna Loy was also an amazing actress. She's best remembered for The Thin Man and sequels, where she gets to show off her comedy skills, adding irresistible impish charm to her classic beauty and dancer's figure.
THE SASS
One of the few actresses who managed to successfully transition from silent to talkies, never won an Oscar but was at one time the highest paid woman in Hollywood. Advocated for better roles and pay for Black actors in the 1930s, so passionately anti-Nazi in the 40s she made Hitler's blacklist, spoke out against Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare, and advocated for fair housing in the 1950s and 1960s, all while being hot as fuck opposite William Powell, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy and a whole galaxy of the Hot Vintage Men Poll all-stars.
Tumblr media
Cute as a button with so much RIZZ! She and whatsisname in The Thin Man are relationship goals.
She was literally called the Queen of Hollywood! She is so sassy and funny in the whole Thin Man series. Absolutely hot in those, and who doesn’t love a woman who can laugh? She had the sultriest gaze and that style! Also before she was a star she sat as the model for an iconic statue for a school (representing “Fountain of Education”).
the glamour!! the banter!! the comedy!!
Tumblr media
She's got this cute kinda scrunched up face AND shes funny AND shes got a bangin body.

"Has anyone given any thought to why all the frequent screen actresses who do a little stage show every few years are white blonde ladies of a certain age? Well, regardless, this white blonde lady is a tour de force on stage, and few other screen actors can say the same thing."

"Last propaganda was a eulogy, so let's make this one a celebration. Marin had a voice we will never hear the likes of again. She could be a bold and brassy broad with a belt that would make Ethel Merman jealous. And in the same breath, she could soar up the octave to shatter every glass in the room with a crystal-clear coloratura most singers only dream about. It didn't matter if it was a dirty ditty or a wrenching aria. She owned every song that passed her lips. When she walked into a room, she brought joy with her. She exuded light and happiness and love even to the end. She was truly a golden goddess of a woman with a naughty sense of humor that would have you rolling on the floor with laughter."

🌙 Books for Arab American Heritage Month 🌙
🌙 Good morning, bookish bats, and Eid Mubarak to those who are celebrating. Eid al-Fitr ("the feast of breaking the fast") marks the end of Ramadan, an Islamic holy month of fasting and sacrifice. April is also Arab American Heritage month, which celebrates the 3.7 million Arab Americans across the country. This is an opportunity to combat Anti-Arab bigotry by challenging stereotypes and prejudices.
✨ One of the best ways to do so is to read books ABOUT Arab Americans. To help, here are a few books for Arab American Heritage Month you can read, discuss, or add to your ever-growing TBR!
[ List under the cut. ]
✨ Growing up, I didn't have books that represented my experiences as an Arab or Muslim American. My friends didn't have stories to read that could help them understand my perspective. With that in mind, I added children's books on the last slide, for the moms out there searching for diverse books--books that allow us to empathize and understand different perspectives and experiences.
🌙 A Woman Is No Man - Etaf Rum ✨ The Other Americans - Laila Lamami 🌙 You Exist Too Much - Zaina Arafat ✨ Grape Leaves - Gregory Orfalea and Sharif Elmusa 🌙 The Wrong End of the Telescope - Rabih Alameddine ✨ The Beauty of Your Face - Sahar Mustafah 🌙 Martyr - Kaveh Akbar ✨ Between Two Moons - Aisha Abdel Gawad 🌙 Tasting the Sky - Ibtisam Barakat ✨ A Game for Swallows - Zeina Abirached 🌙 Love Is An Ex-Country - Randa Jarrar ✨ The Thirty Names of Night - Zeyn Joukhadar

Thérèse Dreaming (1939) and Maya Hawke
PART 2 - SYMBOLISM AND LYRICS
Same warnings: misogyny, abuse, pedophilia (none are graphic descriptions), and language.
See part 1, 2, coming soon: 3
The Dream, verse 1
I go see Thérèse dreaming She's stretching out her sore shoulder Leaning back, eyes closed, reaching up She is wishing she was older Dreaming of an appaloosa Saddled up, riding out of town Dreaming of a Shelby cobra Digging her tires in the ground
What do you see in Thérèse’s face? Is she relaxed, relieved, or in deep thought? The title tells us that she’s dreaming but is it a good dream? Personally, I see some strain on her  face. I take note of how tightly shut her eyes are. Maya gives her daydreams like riding horses, fancy cars, and leaving town. There’s a sense of freedom in this. I think it makes Thérèse more real. Who hasn’t been a little girl dreaming of something bigger?
Tumblr media
Growing Pains
Bleeding, bringing in a new year mess
Unaware of the stain on her dress
It's tactless, its a test
It's just Thérèse
It's just Thérèse
The scandal of the painting, the exposed underwear. Sadly, I’ve never seen the painting in person, so I can’t tell you exactly what I see but many interpret the stain or shadow on her underwear as menstrual blood. If she’s eleven, it’s likely she hasn’t had a period for a very long time and probably doesn't realize. The beginning of puberty is very difficult for everyone, especially women. It’s messy and it always feels wrong, but it’s the first step to bodily adulthood. Not to mention the preconceptions and misogyny around periods. Only recently and in every specific spaces it has been okay to even utter the word period. Personality, i'm tired of phrasing like ‘that time of the month.’ And I think Miss Hawke may be too because in her version of the painting, she proudly wears a red stain.
Tumblr media
The Perversion, verse 2
White kitten in the corner
Obscene
It really says it all
Milk matches her underwear
Get her down
Take her off the wall
‘Get her down, take her off the wall’ may refer to the movement started by Mia Merrill, a human resources manager who saw the painting at the Met (where it still is today). The Met responded politely, but declined. Merrill replied: “I would consider this petition a success if the Met included a message as brief as, ‘Some viewers find this piece offensive or disturbing, given Balthus’ artistic infatuation with young girls'.” Which is something I agree with. I do believe that what Maya is doing through her music and art is of the utmost respect and reverence for Thérèse and probably is the most kindness her soul has received in a long time. These lyrics talk about the very likely meaning of the white cat in the painting. Balthus has used the cat metaphor in his work multiple times, all paired with a woman reclining in a revealing pose. See nude with cat. One can infer that the cat represents the slang for female genitalia: pussy. Having it lap at the bowl of milk is a pretty thinly veiled representation of oral sex as well. Maya tells us this, ‘obscene, really says it all.’  Reminding us of the harsh reality that the model is a young girl.
Final
She empathizes with your feelings
She's more interested in the ceilings
She reminds me of memories
Sleeping off the growing pains
We were seeing enemies
spelling out each others names
Whispering inside our red house
While the adults were asleeping
I guess Thérèse is just for me
A quiet I keep on keeping
Maya imagines a life with Thérèse. That they could have been childhood friends. The profound sadness is overwhelming at this point in the song. ‘Thérèse is just for me, a white I keep on keeping.’ She keeps Thérèse with her, taking her away from her trauma and giving her a new story. As if she is some kind of guardian or symbol for women. I connect with these songs and videos so much because I feel the same way. Ever since I learned about Thérèse’s story, I saw myself in her. Many of us, myself included, find strength in our dreams of a better future. They motivate us. A great defender of this, author Robin D.G. Kelly calls them ‘freedom dreams.’ Dreams of racial and gender equality. Dreams of utopia, freedom and happiness. Without hope, how do you power your future?

My next post will discuss the music video of ‘Blue Hippo’! Each of these posts will be revised after i post them. Feel free to talk to me and send me asks! I love talking about music and art. I hope everyone is taking care of themselves <3.

Ancestral Chapter 17
Written for day 1 of Ectoberhaunt's isekai weekend! Ignore how far past midnight we are, okay?
.
Sleep all too often came with dreams.  That was probably why none of them had really wanted to go to bed.
Along with the anxiety, the revelations, the threat to all of their lives, etcetera, etcetera.  No one was really counting all that.  Much.
Danny dreamed.  He knew he dreamed.
Well.  Sort of.  This was really more of a nightmare.  Even though nothing bad had happened yet, the whole atmosphere of the classroom was steeped in unease and tension.
"Ryv is one of the few Avlynyse words borrowed directly from French, without first passing through English," said Mr. Lancer, as he wrote on the board in Esperanto.  "Most likely due to the popularity of Marie Thérèse of France, who married Prince Alyn, later King Alyn, in sixteen eighty-eight pursuant to the agreement of marriage negotiated when she was five between her father, the Sun King, and Dr. Kahysy Wyrtmyn Royne Tyronoé, when the later saved her from dying of consumption.  Yes, Mr. Fenton, this will be on the test.”
“I didn’t say anything,” said Danny.
“Queen Marie Thérèse was often quoted as saying ‘Parfois, j’ai l’impression que ma vie ici n’est qu’un beau rêve’ or ‘Sometimes I feel as if my life here is nothing but a beautiful dream.’”
“You don’t even speak French,” said Danny, despairingly.
“Compare and contrast ryv with the thirteen other common Avlynyse terms for dream, such as ayslyn, traym, and revo.”
“That last one isn’t even Avlynyse,” protested Danny.  “It’s Esperanto.  You’re writing in Esperanto.  I don’t think you know that, either.”
“Compare and contrast King Georg Gyvry’s attempts to acquire royal spouses for his children, thereby securing alliances and diplomatic ties, with Queen Arynryd’s foundation of the School of Heroes.”
Danny stood up.  He couldn’t take any more of this.  He felt like his heart was about to beat out of his chest, and all that was happening was Mr. Lancer giving a lecture on Avlynyse history.  And getting things wrong, but that wasn’t really relevant.
“Mr. Fenton, this will be on the test.”
“What test?” asked Danny.  “This is a dream.”
“But you have to pass,” said Mr. Lancer, not looking away from the blackboard.  “You have to pass.  This will be on the trial.”
“What?” asked Danny, unable to help himself.
“You have to pass the Trials.  Dr. Kahysy Wyrtmyn Royne Tyronoé was born in Royn on the Island of Tyrono, to the herbalists Byryta and Yud Wyrtmyn, also of Royn.  He was later sponsored by a client of theirs, Dr. Uwyn Font, to attend Argyntyn College.  While there, his ideas were instrumental to the resolution of the sixteen sixty-nine Argyntyn Cholera epidemic, and he was inducted to the School of Heroes.”
Danny turned away.  He already knew all of this.  Except where it was wrong, which was annoying.  He hated it when his dreams were wrong, especially when they’d be so interesting otherwise.  Like, one time, he’d had a dream about Jupiter, but it was way too close to Earth, and there was just no way the GAV could fly up there that fast, so, there.
Behind him, Mr. Lancer - that is, dream Mr. Lancer - had stopped speaking.  Danny felt certain that if he were to turn around now, Mr. Lancer wouldn’t even be there.  No.  He’d be replaced by something much worse.  Something terrible.
He hunched his shoulders and covered his face, then froze as his fingers encountered something around his eyes.  The mask he’d worn the previous night, for the Moon Masque.  Had he even brought it home, after everything?  He didn’t remember.  He had been given back his not-so-ceremonial knife, and it was resting on his bedside table.  His fingers itched for it now.  Normal weapons, even Danny’s normal weapons, wouldn’t do anything against what loomed behind him, but maybe that would.  It had already banished one monster.
There was only so long he could delay.  He turned.  The tunnel was long and dark, with no forks or turns.  He walked.  Fire and flowers licked from the walls, horribly red, ready to burn, ready to bleed, but did nothing to provide light.
There was an end.  It was covered in metal instead of stone.  Dull green lines traced between metal panels and wires sprawled loosely over the floor.  He put his hand against the wall as he walked.  If he was right, this was where he would slip–
–click.
Remembered agony shot through his bones and heart and brain and he spasmed.  Through the green he could see Jazz.  Leo.  George.  Iris.  Vivian.  Lewis.  Matthew.  Joanna.  Grandpa Alfred.  Martin.  William.  Aunt Alicia.  Great Aunt Isabella.  Great Uncle Theodore.
All of them dying.  All of them screaming, dying, melting.
There was a sensation of cold in his chest and he choked himself awake, his ghost sense slipping past his lips.  He reached for the dagger instinctively, ready to fight.
“Fryth, myne yfyor.  Peace, Danny.  Dreams, only, have troubled you.”
“Danny?” said Jazz, blearily, from the other side of the large bed.  “What’s wrong?”
“Um,” said Danny, staring.  Gwensyvyr had her hand phased partway into his shoulder, and that was clearly what had triggered his ghost sense and woken him up.  But, more importantly…  “You talked!”
“Yeah?” said Jazz, who was still not entirely awake.
“Yes,” said Gwensyvyr at the same time.  “Although it would, ah, appear that you, only, can hear me.”  Her accent was strange and heavy, but still familiar and homey in a way Danny couldn’t properly identify.
“Danny?” said Jazz, again.  “Did you have a nightmare or something?”
“Yeah,” said Danny.  “Yeah, I, um, nightmare.  Portals and murder plots, you know?  Ah.  Ha.”
Jazz was sitting up, now, and peering at the clock.  “It’s two,” she said, making a face.  “The sun was just barely up… What’s that at this latitude?  Nine?  So, five hours?”  She sighed.  “I feel like we just got over jet lag…”
“Mhm,” said Danny.  He wasn’t entirely awake either, and his brain wasn’t up for returning anything but exclamation points on the subject of Gwensyvyr talking to him.
(And, as a point of fact, they’d been recovered from jet lag even before Matthew’s attempted emergency coronation, and that had been on the… The ninth?  The tenth?  And now it was…  Danny wasn’t entirely sure, actually.  Preparations for the Moon Masque had been a whirlwind.  Late January, anyway.)
(Maybe Jazz was right and they weren’t all that recovered from jet lag.)
“Should we go back to sleep?  I don’t want to throw my sleep schedule off too much, though…”
“Jazz, I don’t… I don’t think that’s really important.”
Jazz made a disgruntled noise, looked back over at him, and abruptly propelled herself off the bed.  “What–”
“Oh,” said Gwensyvyr.  “It might be that she might see?”  She pronounced the ‘gs’ in each ‘might.’
“Ohh,” said Jazz.  “She– That–  Hello, Gwensyvyr?”  Then she blinked.  “She’s gone?”
“No,” said Danny.  “Still here.”
“ I just–  I don’t see her anymore.”
“Alas,” said Gwensyvyr.  “A moment, only.  Yet still better than not at all.”
“Y-yeah,” said Danny.  He looked Gwensyvyr over.  “Your arm is better?”  It was, at least, covered in clothing again.
“It appears.”
“This is good,” said Jazz.  “This is good, right?”
“I mean, I don’t think it could be bad,” said Danny with a shrug.  “I can hear her, now.”
“Can you hear the others?” asked Jazz, climbing back onto the bed.  “Vivian?”
“I’ve been awake for a minute,” said Danny.  “And Vivian’s still with Matthew.”
“They have returned,” said Gwensyvyr.
“Really?” asked Danny.
“Three, four hours after you began to, ah…  Slevyn?”
“Sleep,” provided Danny.  “But they’re back?”
“I always forget that one,” said Gwensyvyr, mildly.  “Matthew still is awake.”
Danny rolled out of bed.
“I guess we’re getting up, then,” said Jazz.  She brushed her hair out with her fingers as Danny hunted for something slightly more acceptable to wear downstairs than his pajamas.  Then, Danny remembered that Leo had come down that first day in pajama pants, a blanket, and no shirt, so it wasn’t like it mattered.
The other ghosts, as silent as ever, pointed Danny and Jazz in the direction of the dining room, where Matthew, Irene, and Joanna were talking quietly and intensely.  They all stopped immediately when the door opened.
Matthew and Irene looked absolutely awful.  Irene was still in her Moon Masque costume, and it was rumpled and stained.  It looked like she’d been pulling at her hair, with how it had come out of its earlier neat style.  Matthew had changed into a t-shirt and ratty jeans, and his arm was in a sling.  He looked pale, and his other arm had IV tape and various medical bracelets.  His nose was crusted with blood, and he had a black eye.
“Is Sophia asleep?” asked Jazz, when no one else seemed ready to say anything.
“Sophia is still under medical care,” said Matthew.  He rubbed his eyes with his free hand.  “Nervous breakdown.  Grabbed a syringe from one of the doctors and tried to stab me with it.  Punched me really good, too.”
No wonder he and Mr. Kynbaz had been too busy to answer the phone.
“Then, I had been given some Revyvtech drugs, because the knife,” he gestured at his shoulder, “had belladonna extract on it.  So I spent three hours after Joanna called getting all my blood replaced, just in case Revyvtech was also poisoning me.  Luckily, Physostigmine is produced by other companies, so Sophia and I were able to take that, and the amount of atropine that got into our systems really wasn’t enough to kill us, anyway.”  He sighed.  “I’m tired of getting poisoned.”
Irene patted his shoulder.
“Yeah,” said Danny.  “So.  What are we doing about that?”
“Which?”
“The– The thing with Revyvtech.”
“We’re investigating,” said Matthew.  “Unfortunately, you can’t just accuse an entire company of murder.  You have to find the people responsible.  And you need evidence.  Security brought the medicines you tested to a forensics lab, so we’ll see if anything turns up there.  I don’t know what else to do.  I don’t even know if it’s safe to take the Trials, if these ‘blood blossoms’ bioaccumulate, if we’ll all drop dead the minute we finish them, the same way everyone else did.  I don’t know.”
“I don’t think they do,” said Danny, thoughtfully.  “I mean, I had a friend eat some for me, once, and I was still able to do things like phase through him afterwards.”
“There’s that, at least,” said Matthew.  He rubbed his eyes again.
“You should sleep,” said Joanna.
Matthew shook his head.
Jazz cleared her throat again.  “Mom and Dad?” she asked.
“Kyr Argyn, under house arrest in the Late Wing,” said Matthew.  “Pending an investigation, but of course all the investigators are busy…”  He stood up.  “We’re doing what we can do.  If the spirits are able to give you anything else…?”  He trailed off, hopefully.
“He should sleep,” said Gwensyvyr.  “I do not believe anything I have to say to you will change that.”  She paused.  “Vivian’s story might.”
Danny shook his head.
“Let me know if that changes,” said Matthew.  He took a breath and held it for a second.  “Joanna, can you–?”
“I’ll keep everyone to the schedule as best I can,” she said.
“Good.  Good,” said Matthew.  He hobbled around his chair, towards the door, Irene helping him.
“What schedule?” asked Danny, after they had left.  “To prepare for the Trials,” said Joanna.  “We’re going a little fast, but… the full moon is soon.”  She smiled shakily.  “So!  Since you two are up, why don’t you get breakfast - or lunch, I suppose - and we can talk about personal seals.”

with my fingers burned, I start anew: A Lady of Autumn One Shot.
Tumblr media
“Come on!” she heard a giggle on the wind. She turned her head, the movement slow as she took in the deep green and bronze of the trees surrounding her. These oaks and junipers meant they were still in Autumn, but the borders of Summer.
She had not been to these woods since she was a girl. She was dreaming, then.
She searched ahead for the voice when she heard it again. “You’re being too slow! We must get going!”
She knew that voice, and she knew the deep auburn hair and the golden bow. Mathilde waited for her under a juniper tree. Fearless and wild Mathilde, her older sister. She gasped as a ruddy cheeked young girl, with bright copper hair, approached her and grabbed her hand. Her younger sister, Delphine met her eyes, more golden than her own. They were women when they died, she thought absently, and now they came to her as younglings again.
“Thérèse, hurry!”
Her heart skipped a beat, threatening to wake her. She had not heard her name in centuries.
Where are we going? She tried to ask, but she could not speak. So instead she ran with her sisters. Mathilde led the way as she used to, her hair a deep red sheet behind her. Delphine never let go of her hand as they ran ahead. The trees thinning, green threading through oranges and brown. She was moving, but she could not feel her feet touch the ground. If she had any doubts she was dreaming, they ended there as she seemed to leap across the forest floor. Mathilde slowed to a stop, approaching a path carved between rows of aspen trees, sunlight filtered through their golden leaves, their white trunks stretching high.
“Thérèse, you’re too far behind. We’ll never make it.” Mathilde scolded, Deplhine tugged her hand, as she whispered, “It’s time to go Thérèse.”
She was Wife, she was Lady, she was Mother. But she had not been Thérèse in a very, very long time.

Propaganda
Cyd Charisse (The Bandwagon, Brigadoon, Singin’ in the Rain)—LEGS LEGS LEGS I would sell my soul for the legs of Cyd Charisse - she oozed style and glamour and sex appeal!! And she could DANCE! She was dancing next to the greats - Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire but they are never who you're looking at because why would you when you can look at her. I will only sit through too long ballet breaks for her. If there was any woman who you could call sex on legs it was her. These dances are everything to meeee (she comes in at the minute mark) and this dance too of course is iconic. In the words of Fred Astaire 'When you've danced with Cyd Charisse you stay danced with'
Mbissine Thérèse Diop (Black Girl)—She’s a Senegalese actress known for starring in Black Girl, one of the first African films to receive international attention/acclaim. So much of the movie relies on her ability to convey her character’s sense of isolation/loneliness, she’s so amazing, I really wish she had acted more. However, she just recently appeared in the film Cuties!
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Cyd Charisse:
Tumblr media
Arguably the Best female dancer of her time, she supposedly insured her legs for $5 million dollars. Stole the show whenever she had a dance number, even if she went uncredited. Musicals started to go out of fashion so unfortunately she didn't have as many big roles as she should have, but those she did are unforgettable. The Broadway Melody number in Singin' in the Rain - the green dress!
Incredibly, Cyd Charisse only started learning to dance as a rehab exercise to strengthen her body after a childhood bout of polio. She was in high demand as a dance partner, Fred Astaire called her beautiful dynamite and said "When you've danced with her, you stayed danced with". She was one of a few leading ladies to dance with both Astaire and Kelly, declaring them both delicious. Kelly apparently was stronger, while Astaire was more coordinated. She also said her husband would always know who she had been dancing with because Kelly left her bruised, while Astaire didn't leave a mark. She's better known for her dance numbers today, but she was a leading lady in her time! Her Scottish accent in Brigadoon leaves a lot to be desired, but compared to the other actors in the movie, it's almost good. She appeared in The Harvey Girls alongside Judy Garland and Angela Lansbury in her first speaking role, but she really burst onto the scene with Singin' in the Rain and her infamous Broadway Melody Ballet number with Gene Kelly (no one could handle a length of fabric like Cyd Charisse). She was brought in because Debbie Reynolds wasn't really a dancer and Kelly was notoriously a stickler about his Vision. After that she starred opposite Astaire in The Band Wagon, which was a bit of a flop but created some enduringly incredible dance numbers. She went on to star in a number of MGM movies, and was one of the last of the Studio era stars to remain on contract. Since we've got up to 1970, I'm including her opening routine in The Silencers (1966) to show just how long she was making a splash - she's into her 40s here and still a siren:

and of course, the iconic Broadway Melody Ballet -

She had amazing legs, and she knew how to use them! You probably know her best from the dream sequence in Singin' In The Rain. She was such a stunning dancer, and all her dance scenes are hard to look away from.
Tumblr media
Legs for days, beautiful dancer in the most iconic scenes of Singin in the Rain. She's glorious. As some guys sung to her in It's Always fair weather, 'baby you knock me out!'
Photos do not do Cyd Charisse justice, unfortunately, because she is at her hottest while dancing, which she was exquisitely good at. Just go watch her first number in Singin' in the Rain, in that green dress; nothing I could say here will be more convincing that that.
Dancing in the Dark clip:
youtube
She's an amazing dancer and my favorite from the period. Here's her and Fred Astaire in the Band Wagon:
youtube
I just like a woman who's there to be really incredibly good at dancing.
She could pirouette in pointes or tear it up in taps. Fred Astaire called her "beautiful dynamite" and wrote, "That Cyd! When you've danced with her you stay danced with." Gene Kelly partnered with her three times. Her legs were (reportedly) insured for $5 million in 1952 ($57.8 million in 2024 dollars)! Everyone in this poll will be iconic, but for raw physical grace, Cyd is up there with the best.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most talented female dancers in Hollywood history, but what sets her apart from other competitors for that title is that she...umm...well let's be blunt, she was the dancer who put sex into it. The one who said "Hey, you know that A+ leg tone that naturally develops from doing this for a living? Why don't I let people see that? Like at every opportunity?" She reportedly insured her legs for five million dollars after hitting it big, which just goes to show that fame makes you crazy. It should have been ten million.

The story of the Free Enterprise Group (FEG) – the neo-Thatcherite Tory faction founded by Liz Truss in 2011 and closely associated with Tufton Street think tanks such as the Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) – makes for satisfying schadenfreude. A decade after a gaggle of newly elected Tory MPs, among them Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng, co-authored ‘Britannia Unchained’, which outlined the FEG’s vision for the country, the group’s internal politicking saw them slowly ascend to the head of the table.
Twelve long-time supporters of the FEG would occupy cabinet positions in Truss’s government, with Kwarteng, Thérèse Coffey and Nadhim Zahawi rewarded with some of the choice senior roles. The head of IEA’s public policy openly and gleefully boasted about dictating the political course. At last, it was time for them to realise the hyper-neoliberal Britain they’d dreamed about for so long, one which could boast of the bare minimum in taxation, regulation and public spending.
Their vision promptly dissolved on contact with reality, immediately tanking the economy and coming to a humiliating and abrupt halt to the experiment after all of 44 days.
[...]
Britain is by no means alone in facing such crises – particularly in the wake of various economic and supply chain shocks resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – but economists have begun to refer to the upshot of Truss’ response as a ‘moron risk premium’. The UK has become a cautionary tale in how to exacerbate an already perilous economic situation.
