“I was betrayed.”
“No, you weren’t,” Raine really hopes he can hear their exasperated sigh even from the other side of the room.
“Betrayed and abandoned in my hour of need,” Darius throws one arm over his face and turns his head away. A little abomination that sits on the top of the headboard warbles at him.
Raine crosses their arms, “May I remind you that Eber only had to travel to the Shin because you’ve insisted that just one single potion shop on the Isles sells the medicine good enough for you?”

Darius grumbles under his breath. From their place by the door Raine can’t quite hear him.
“Come on, don’t be like this. Do you want me to read to you?”
“No.”
“Do you want me to make an inhalation potion for you?”
“No, it won’t help.” He coughs again. <...>
“It’s so stuffy in here, at least let me open the windows.”
“No,” this time he actually sits up and turns to face them. “Do you want to get caught too?” A big abomination steps in between Raine and the windows and menacingly raises a spray bottle filled with disinfectant fluid. “Stay out of the gripping distance.”
“Fine! If you insist,” Raine returns to their place by the door. Darius re-assumes his sulking position in the bed.
“Do you want me to turn on some music or bring you your journals?”

Just ignore him, then. Raine turns back to finish the vegetables. It’s just the time to add the last batch to the soup. They’ll make everything right. Despite his efforts.
“Did you trim the tendrils off the beetle-goat meat?”
“Darius!” Raine returns to the door. “I know how to cook! I don’t need your… pestering.”
“Oh, really?” Darius crosses his arms. “You don’t know my kitchen, and you cook like a college student still on the run from the Choosey Hat!”
“That’s not true!” Raine feels their ears warm up. “Absolutely not true!” Well, maybe sometimes… Just ignore him!

hunter is the type to find cool and pretty rocks and give them to darius and eber and while darius especially doesn’t really even like rocks or dirt he still keeps them all because hunter thought it was cool and it reminded him of darius so he doesn’t even think about throwing it away for even a second

I can't say anything positive about them as a couple, and i fell out of TOH fandom to came up with some thoughts about them as friends without going too deep in my headcanons and AU
I'll just say that they respect each other and and were very close. And for Darius his death was really traumatic. So traumatic that he threated the next Gollden Guard.. well... very badly. (and in my headcanon it wasn't Hunter, but nobody but Darius knew)

AU where instead of puppets Collector turns the Coven Heads and some other characters he could catch back into children/teenagers - without memories of their adult life but with real memories up to their current age, maybe slightly altered to keep them from freaking out. (Other characters who are not turned are not in the Castle and are hiding or whatever). Main reasons for the AU:
- teenagers Raine and Darius being the only ones who know each other, and they are scheming.
- the hexsquad arrives at the Castle and from hearing Hunter's voice from afar Darius assumes the previous golden guard has come to save him and runs up to meet him. A very 😬 situation (Hunter probably blurts something out about being the previous golden guards brother or cousin, but Darius is mighty suspicious)
- Raine deliberately acts shy until they can figure out the new people. Camila, trying to engage them, asks what's the name of their pet kitten (?) they are carrying, it's adorable! And Luz is, like, No, mama, that's the Head Witch Eberwolf.

Confession
I never had a perfect life, I've never had much. Some days, I remember being locked up in a room starving because my father didn't like all of the attention that my mother gave me.
Doc:Do you think that came from a place of resentment?
maybe....he'd look at me with such angst and regret...I don't think he ever wanted to have me....
Doc:What about your mother? What was she like?
my mother? She...was so great... She was the smartest woman I've ever known. Her tech and how she used it made me want to follow in her footsteps. I wanted to make mom and dad happy....
Doc:interesting......now Mr. alador, I've been your therapist for years now....and I can tell something weighs on you heavily
Oh, you don't know the half of it, so much regret all I feel is regret i-......
Doc:Did anything happen to your mother?....
it did....something really bad, doc...and I'm afraid... afraid of what my mother's death has left behind....
Doc:I'm all ears alador.....
.....it happened on my 14th birthday....we couldn't live with dad anymore due to him going into a drunken rage and somehow burning down the house, so we had to relocate to an area where he couldn't locate us...
alador: im home from school~"
I remember it clearly, yes... Darius was with me
darius: mn?.....is she not here?
alador: dunno... Maybe she's down in her workshop downstairs?
we went to go look....once we opened up the door, it felt horrible....very wrong out of place and disturbing.....so much that I despised the thought of taking a single step into my mother's work space
as we went down, I could hear her
my mother's pained gasp...I could hear her dying breathe doc...
alador: m o m ? . . . .
darius lit the torch that was in the room, revealing my mother laying on the ground stomach slit open
Darius: Holy crap-
I've never been so terrified in my life. All I could do was just freeze in place and piss my bloody pants -
Doc: You're too hard on yourself, alador. You were a child. How else were you supposed to react seeing your mother get killed?
I felt so powerless - poor darius who knows how he felt at the time...
Your friend darius... how did he react through the whole thing?....what did he do after seeing your mother's corpse?
I remember him...comforting me... covering my eyes and saying
darius: This isn't your fault, alador.....she...she wouldn't blame you for this....accidents happen... but we have to go and get help before it's too late....
Afterward, we ran as fast as we could to save her....but it was too late....the house was locked and we couldn't get in....could you imagine a house made out of barely stable wood would stay up and keep you from breaking in...did you know it survived the boiling rains?....
Doc:very interesting indeed...so what exactly are you scared of?....
have you heard the legend of the angels doc?
Doc:the species that's been extinct for years? Yes, they were rightfully slayed during the heavenly war
not quite... the angels were wrongfully executed due to the ignorance of the collector of hell....he's messed with too many souls... and turned them into figments of consequences of people's shitty actions.....I fear my mother has come to haunt whoever killed her....but I'm afraid that she's not the only lost soul... the boiling isles is littered with these souls....I'm afraid...that if I don't do anything about it, darius will die , my kids will die, and my friends....I'll lose the home that I've loved for years....
