"It's too big," Eli comments as Jake starts to rip open the cardboard and packaging.
"Yep," Jake grins. Focused on the task at hand though never giving up an opportunity to rib Samuel, "70 inches for Y/N's tiny apartment. Can tell you dropped out of middle school."
"Shut up," is all Samuel manages to muster and the other two snort in response.
Samuel scoffs. Refuses to admit that yes, it is far too big. That only now he has realised it'll take up at least half the dividing wall between the living room and your bedroom, and there is nowhere near enough space to get a good viewing distance.
Which, by the way, has nothing to do with being a dropout.
Refusing to sink to their level and asinine comments, he continues to supervise. Watching Eli now joining to rip away the plastic and styrofoam and cardboard. Doesn't lift a finger to help. Why should he? He's already opened his wallet.

"Hey, brat," Jake shouts. Even with his and Eli's immense strength, they struggle to manoeuvre the awkwardly oversized, unwieldy object to position on the wall. "Come help out if you wanna join in in anymore movie nights."
Everyone knows 'brat' is Johan, who is currently lounging on the sofa. The insult having been tossed out casually one time by you, then adopted by everyone else because, hey - it's apt.
Johan rolls his eyes. Unglues himself from the sofa and acts as if this is an absolute waste of his time. That he has been thoroughly put out by needing to help these idiots.
But the additional pair of hands make quick work of hanging up the TV. Eli and Johan holding opposite sides as Jake tightens the screws.
Once done, all three stand back to admire their handiwork and the new screen. The sleek lines and shiny edging.
Oohs and aahs as Samuel flicks through the channels and sets it up.
United for once in front of the new technology, like cavemen when fire was first discovered.

Late night thoughts, about software and algorithms.
Hmm, haven't posted late night thoughts here before, it seems appropriate, I think? And late night is relative, as I get older, late gets earlier. :-)
Reminder, algorithms depend on human input to function. Without humans entering data and reacting to output, algorithms are just a bunch of gibberish text coded as 0's and 1's.
With the internet and current systems, it may take a large group of humans to change the behavior of an algorithm, but it is possible.
For example, it's possible to shift the results of a search in a search engine.
Analyze the current patterns of a search for a term, set up websites and social media posts to optimize their terms, and voila! Behavior changed to display results that may not apply.
See Search Engine Optimization (SEO) companies who are paid to do this for advertising.
For social media, change the algorithm by changing what you like. Now these companies do work to passively gather data, so it is a bit harder to change the behavior. But even here, it is possible, with a bit of thought
Ad blockers and Javascript blockers can help to starve the algorithm of input. Using the built-in filtering tools and turning off notifications is another method of changing the input.
Check and respond on your schedule, not the algorithms.
Set new trends in fashion that mess with the algorithm. A few years ago there was software that claimed to recognize male versus female faces.
One problem, I am female, the different on-line software packages I tried only recognized me as male.
After some analysis, I think this occurred for two reasons
1. I don't wear makeup
2. My face structure is one that could be described as androgynous, i.e. I look male/female depending on the person's viewpoint.
I tend to think the lack of makeup is the strongest factor, however, I have had problems all my life of getting mistaken as a male so that's probably not the only reason.
A simple thing and a possible assumption built into the algorithm.
The key to all of this is to understand software is:
All software is built of branching trees that require input from humans to do anything. The input might be as simple as pressing a start button but the input is required.
If you shift the input so it fall outside of the parameters of one of the branches, you force it to follow a very different path.
Do this often enough and you can cause a break in the paths..
In my opinion, all software is inherently fragile due to the complexity of the branches.
Finally, PSA, I would like to see an effort to improve the tools used to develop software to help reduce this fragility. Software has become a key part of our infrastructure yet there has not been a lot of change in the underlying technology in my lifetime.
We should also look at identifying and regulating key portions of software development used in our infrastructure. I suspect everyone else is also tired of all of the cyber-attacks, identity theft and scams that are enabled by software.
Without humans, computers are fancy blocks of metal that have a bunch of sand storing ridiculous amounts of code and data. Talk of replacing humans is meant to cause fear and make money for someone somewhere.
And mess with the algorithm, post some nonsense to pour some sand in the gears.

Chapter 16

I slowly get out of bed, trying not to make a sound so as not to wake my mother up.
I pick up my phone and put it in my pants pocket, leaving the room in silence.
I go downstairs and into the living room. My father is sitting on the sofa, massaging his forehead.
I walk over to him and sit next to him, hugging his arm.
“I'm sorry you had to see that, honey” he tells me, placing a kiss on my head ". I should have gone to the door, then I would have suspected it."
"It's okay, dad" I say along with an indifferent face ", I wouldn't want you to have seen it either" I hear him sigh and I sit up, still looking at him sadly ", and Elliot?"
“In the kitchen, talking on the phone with some of his coworkers” he makes a vague gesture with her hand, pointing in the direction of the kitchen “he seems to be affected, too."
He surely also blames himself for not having been in front to have been able to examine the package himself.

“I supposed so."
"Are you sure someone else didn't know you'd be here?" I shakes my head and he takes a breath "MC, I'm a police officer, I can tell when you lie to me. You are too easy to read."
I deny again. I can’t speak. I have to be careful.
"Sorry, I have to go." I break away from the counter, wanting to leave the kitchen.

I was going to say goodbye to my father, but I see that he has fallen asleep on the sofa. In his hands is a photo of Daliah and me.
I approach him and give him a kiss on the cheek, going to the entrance.

While I agree with you in the news aspect of this whole thing, I'd like to point out that (and this is my opinion based on experience) this is the take they do on situations that start and develop on Twitter. You might read a media outlet talking about the topic, linking the tweet and then a second paragraph related to something about the people involved so they can get you to click on a different article (ie. Linking it back to the polemic over the rebozo). That's how they work bc usually there's not much money to be out and about investigating. They just want to publish first so they get the clicks and therefore money and a good SEO position. The people behind the news are probably having to meet a quota of about 6-10 news per day so they also don't have the time to look into it. I see the treatment of this news is almost like another celebrity news (break ups, pregnancies, etc)
There isn't a tmz that's out with the information and talking with the people involved. I think, depending on what he does or says next, we might get the TV involved and trying to get a quote from the people involved and that's the most investigation there'll be, unless it escalates if more women come forward. Maybe other news outlets will pick up on it bc he's worked in marvel. I'm not sure international folks will get involved, especially because there's a language barrier. I'm guessing they'll just wait to see what happens and report on what Mexican media outlets say....
Again I might be wrong but this is my experience. It's a heavy situation and it's world shattering for the fandom but when you think about a news outlet they have to prioritize and put the money on other news like politics, crime, etc, especially if they're just digital and not an extension of a TV channel or something like that.
In regards to the victim's portion of the post you wrote, sadly, she did say she was assaulted by him in the replies to that same tweet (https://twitter.com/_ElenaRios/status/1667439041451642882?s=19). She also posted again after those tweets accusing him of power and emotional abuse and called him a narcissist.

Thanks so much for that detail. I've been on the fringes of the world involving "SEO", "clicks," and driving traffic to particular sites in a previous life but was never that deep into the technicalities. 🙂 What you've called out is precisely my point. I have a huge issue with the dissemination of information that is not properly vetted. And any organization that doesn't have the time or resources to do so should NOT be considered a reliable source. Yes, it is all about the clicks, and making money. And even if these outlets aren't explicitly stating they are news organizations, they are at the very least implying it by their branding and the way they package their messaging. So the general public sees something "news-ish" and there is some expectation that it is reliable info. The lines become more and more blurred everyday. My fear (which extends FAR beyond this situation with Tenoch) is that although we have access to more information than we've ever had, I don't think that's translating into us being a well-informed, or better-informed populous.

Yes, my latest news update is finally out - at least the first part of it. So much has gone on that breaking it into 2 parts seems like the best option for ease of reading.
So the following contains the top news stories, all of the Etsy news, and general SEO information. The next update (coming in the next few days) will cover everything else that happened between the end of November and now.
Since I am still a bit worried that Twitter will become unusable, I’ve begun posting more timely updates on LinkedIn, so please follow or connect with me there!
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
As you may know, Royal Mail was hit by a ransomware attack that has restricted their incoming and outgoing international mail. Most international mail can now be sent, but things are still slow. Note that items entering the UK may also have taken longer than usual in the past month.
Etsy is continuing to refund buyers out of seller funds when cases are opened on orders $250 and up, even when tracking says the packages were delivered and some even signed for. I posted several of the Etsy forum threads and screenshots of deleted threads on Twitter. While many shop owners have received full refunds from Etsy after complaining, some of the recent examples are only getting 50% of the order value back. Let Etsy know what you think in this survey.
Even orders below $250 are coming under additional scrutiny, with this news investigation [video and text] regarding a vintage shop that Etsy issued automatic refunds for without allowing the seller to comment on the cases.
I am writing a blog post on the topic, so if you or anyone you know has been affected, please email me with the details - I promise to keep your details confidential if you wish.
Americans who made at least $600 on a marketplace or through a payment processor/app in 2022 will not be receiving 1099-Ks for that income after all - the IRS has delayed that change for one year. The main reason seems to be the huge amount of new paperwork required for the platforms.
ETSY NEWS
Etsy has had a bizarre checkout bug that only affects a tiny percentage of shops for a few weeks now with no sign of a solution for most of them. Shockingly, Support told one affected buyer “to go to another Etsy seller"!
Hidden as a post in the Technical Issues section of the forum, Etsy announced that some non-US sellers would need to verify their bank accounts in 2023. They state that shops which opened after November 2020 do not need further verification, so I assume that means all of us non-US sellers who had to re-verify last year are ok as well.
If you use the private listing option (even after Etsy removed most of the functionality), beware that those listings do not have a way to add estimated delivery times or return policies before publishing, so you need to rush to add them afterwards before the listing is purchased, or you lose seller protection.
Etsy is testing (or doing a very slow rollout of) letting buyers make an offer on listings, but very few people have it. I did posts with a screenshot on LinkedIn, my Twitter account, and the Etsy Sellers subReddit. Here’s the Etsy forum thread started by someone who spotted this option.
The “Updates to Etsy Search” article that came out mid-January is mostly coverage of things they did a few months ago, including an Add to Cart button in search, displaying the time remaining on expiring sales, video autoplay, and the Star Seller filter [don’t worry, the last one is hidden under the main filter button, so most visitors will never even see it].
They also mentioned the estimated delivery dates being displayed in search, but I haven’t seen that for at least a few weeks; right now I only see the filter they have had for a few years. [It’s pretty embarrassing when they make an announcement like this and it isn’t accurate - and they don’t even bother to correct it.]
Remember, none of these things directly affect the ranking algorithm, and the elements of Star Seller - reviews, shipping on time and answering Messages promptly - are all part of the algorithm already, the latter 2 because they are part of the seller service level standards. If you are worried about the Star Seller filter, also remember that breaking any Etsy policy/rule can negatively affect your Customer & Marketplace Score. “to determine a shop’s Customer & Market Experience Score, Etsy considers a variety of factors that make up overall shop quality, including user reviews of products, whether or not a shop has completed an about section or its shop policies (e.g. returns), whether or not the shop may be able to fulfill orders in a timely fashion, and whether or not the shop may have violated any Etsy policies.” [my emphasis]
January’s category updates includes 2 types of bags, plus changing “unisex” kids and baby clothing categories to “gender neutral”.
The workaround to keep old written shop policies is now being removed, with many of us losing those old policies recently. You may be able to find caches on Google or Bing if you look quickly. Forum discussion thread. If you need to link to your new stripped down policies or your FAQs, here is how.
Etsy is being sued for allegedly allowing counterfeit cashmere items on the site; expect the bots to start taking down anything with the word “cashmere” next.
Etsy’s legal policies now include a page explaining their prohibition on “unsafe or recalled products” and including links to rules and reporting procedures for many countries’ reporting procedures. Recent recalls affecting Etsy include children’s pyjamas from Selfie Craft Company, and a baby rattle sold in one Etsy shop only.
In the “bad publicity” category, part 1: US federal prosecutors say that an Etsy shop was used as a front for smuggling weapons components to the Russians. While the shop didn’t sell anything like that, they did sell gift baskets with commercial components, so Etsy could have avoided this bad press by following their own rules and shutting this shop down far earlier. Bad publicity, part 2: A shop's atrocious customer service went viral on TikTok, which then garnered more media coverage. That shop better be careful, because Harry Styles was already suing ecommerce sellers over products with his name and likeness (including on Etsy).
Also on the infringement front: Disney is suing a couple who have sold infringing items on multiple ecommerce platforms for years, including Etsy and eBay. My Twitter thread has screenshots of some of the products sold on Etsy.
Etsy’s new Chief Legal Officer used to hold a similar role at Facebook.
Etsy Strike spinoff group Artisans Cooperative is hoping to launch a new marketplace this fall, and now has organizing support from the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, including funding from the USDA Rural Cooperative Development Grant Program.
Etsy trend “predictions” for 2023 include 2 colours (indigo and honeycomb), marble decor, and “over-the-top” wedding looks. They provide some search trends from August to October on Etsy, so check out what people have been searching for!
Note that that trends post is different than this one, which includes more detailed search trends and addresses shopping holidays. For example, “56% YoY increase in searches on Etsy containing “personalize gift mom”. You also need to know that there was “1420% YoY increase in searches on Etsy containing “hot pink decor”.
Etsy loves running tests so much they give out trophies for starting the most.
This article [soft paywall; Modern Retail] says that holiday sales were down on Etsy, but Etsy hasn’t released any numbers yet.
This is perhaps my favourite Etsy story ever: how an unusual custom order ended up seen by millions as it hangs on the International Space Station.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Everyone selling online loves December algorithm updates, so Google started rolling out a new Helpful Content Update around December 6. “Google said this update will "tackle content that seems to have been primarily created for ranking well in search engines." Both the Helpful Content and Link Spam updates finished rolling out on January 12.
Ahrefs has updated its link building chapter in the Beginner’s Guide to SEO. “Links are incredibly important for ranking well. And it is quite rare that you will outrank pages that have a lot of strong links—unless you get just as many.”
Understanding basic Google SEO is not enough to have a successful website; understanding how to structure your website is also crucial. For more on that, here’s another article on pillar pages and topic clusters [semi-advanced; you need some basic knowledge of website structure and SEO to fully grasp everything.]
There’s often confusion on long tail keywords and how to use them - this article should clear that up.
EAT has become EEAT: Google search quality raters now evaluate “experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness” instead of just the last 3. “Google explained that there are “some situations where really what you value most is content produced by someone who has first-hand, life experience on the topic at hand.”
Repeat after me and Google’s John Mueller: the number of times a word/phrase is used on a page (aka keyword density) is not a positive Google ranking factor.
Also, readability ratings do not affect Google ranking either, and John Mueller confirmed that as well. Writing for your intended audience is important, however, and that can include some elements of “readability”.
Using artificial intelligence (AI) to write articles for websites is not against Google rules, but using AI just for SEO purposes is. Not surprisingly, more than one media site is already using AI to write content with SEO in mind: CNET is no longer solely about tech news, for example, and the articles apparently have a lot of plagiarism. Should Google be doing more to stop this junk from ranking? Maybe not - they are already working on using it themselves.
Speaking of AI writing, Search Engine Land did an overview of ChatGPT and how it may affect the SEO industry.
Yandex (Russian search engine) had all of its source code leaked. This Twitter thread goes through the different ranking factors and compares them to Google in particular.

How the Right Brand Positioning Helped a Card Collector Create the Business He’s Always Wanted
A Case Study on Jackpot Sports Cards
Since eVision Media was founded over 20 years ago, we’ve worked with hundreds of clients across a vast array of industries, including everything from counsellors, consultants, and coaches to lawyers, interior designers, authors, and more.

How 5 Brand Positioning Strategies Brought Chad’s Vision to Fruition
When Chad first came to us, he was basically running things out of his garage, or anywhere else he could store the massive number of trading cards he’s amassed since childhood, and selling his collectibles through platforms like eBay and Facebook.
He didn’t have a website, logo, or any branding to speak of, so back in 2021, he signed up for our VIP Branding, Website and Marketing Package, which includes brand consulting with me, logo and brand design, website design and development, along with six months of SEO, SEM, content marketing, and social media marketing, and he’s been with us ever since.
The following five points explain what we’ve done for Chad over the last couple of years, and how we’ve leveraged brand positioning to turn Jackpot Sports Cards into one of the most well-known and respected brands in the trading card industry.
Website
Believe it or not, in the trading card business, there are a lot of brands out there with websites that look like something that was developed 15 years ago.
Clearly, the main focus is on the cards, and these kinds of marketing and branding considerations seem to go by the wayside.
Chad knew he didn’t want to follow suit, and right off the bat, he had a cohesive vision of how he wanted his brand to be portrayed, not least when it came to his website.
Chad has a monstrous collection of trading cards, with some items going for tens of thousands of dollars, so he wanted his website to be perceived as professional, authoritative, sophisticated, and something that appeals to people who are willing to spend this kind of money on card collecting.
So, as you can see, we made sure every single aspect of his website reflects this brand positioning, helping him to build trust and credibility with customers by keeping the design very minimal, with clean lines, and a simple, black-and-white colour scheme that exudes elegance, expertise, and authenticity.
We also worked with Chad to ensure that all of the imagery on his site is of the highest possible quality. Having high-quality imagery not only entices potential customers, but also benefits his brand positioning, as it positions Jackpot Sports Cards as being more sophisticated, high-end, and professional.
As you can see, the images of the products are crystal clear, allowing collectors and investors to see the condition of each item, and confirm that what they’re looking at is exactly what they will receive.
What’s more, we also did what we could to build trust and credibility through the copy on Chad’s website, with his About page being the best example of this.
Up above the fold, it plays up Jackpot’s USP, explaining that Chad strives to “demonstrate ethics of the utmost integrity” while providing “the best possible experience” for customers, and guaranteeing that he will “meticulously package and protect your product with unmatched precision,” which is very important, as Chad is renowned for having some of the best shipping practices in the business.
Then Chad tells the heartwarming story of how he got into card collecting at the age of nine, before explaining how he and his father ran a card shop for several years when he was in elementary school.
It’s a subtle little touch, but this kind of story really helps to build Chad’s reputation as an authority in the trading card industry, as he’s had a passion for this hobby for such a long time, and has been in this business off and on since he was a kid.
As we always do for our VIP clients, we also SEO-optimized Chad’s website, including the most appropriate keywords in his website content, while ensuring his website is mobile-friendly and responsive, so it looks great and functions properly no matter how it’s accessed.
We’ve also used SEM tactics, and continue to do so, such as running Google Ads to drive additional traffic to Chad’s website from the search engines and elsewhere.
Online Store
From our first meeting with Chad, he was adamant about having his own online store and was sick of selling his products on other people’s platforms. He wanted to be able to make all of his sales, from start to finish, on his own website.
So, we built him an online store using WooCommerce that not only looks great but allows Chad to take care of every purchase in one centralized location.
As you can see, his store features the same high-quality product images found throughout Chad’s website, and it offers an intuitive interface that allows customers to search for products, leave reviews, share products on social media, sort or categorize them based on a number of different factors, and receive emails to remind them that they’ve abandoned their carts or when their orders have shipped.
Chad’s shopping cart system allows him to process payments, offer discounts or gift cards, add an unlimited number of products to his inventory, and it also includes built-in tax and shipping calculators.
In addition, each product is given an SEO-friendly URL, allowing it to be easily indexed by search engines.
We’ve also worked with Chad to teach him how to upload new products and update his store himself, making the process as simple as possible.
Logo
Jackpot Sports Cards’ logo features the same slick, clean, and professional-looking aesthetics that can be found throughout Chad’s website and the rest of his branding.
At the same time, we wanted it to stand out as much as possible, and not fade into the background, while maintaining the same feel as all of his other branding.
As you can see, we did this by giving his logo some prominent depth and dimension, making it look like it’s towering over everything, including Chad’s competitors.
Being the proud Texan that he is, Chad also made a point of having us include some Texas-themed imagery in his logo, including the Lone Star and the shape of the state of Texas to replace the “O” in Jackpot.
This not only appeals to potential customers in Chad’s area, but also helps him to further differentiate himself from his competitors, and build trust by showcasing his patriotism.
Social Media
Aside from showcasing Jackpot’s products, we’ve used social media to help solidify Chad’s brand positioning as a trusted professional in the trading card industry.
For instance, as you can see below, we created branded imagery for all of Chad’s social media accounts, to ensure the same sophisticated look is reflected in all of his branding, across every platform.
As you can tell from the small sampling of posts below, we’ve also worked with Chad to create some pretty amazing content and kept things consistent by ensuring that we only use the same high-quality imagery you’ll find on Chad’s website and including his logo on as many posts as possible.
In addition to featuring new products, as they enter Chad’s inventory, we also post snippets from Chad’s blog, tips for collectors, testimonials from customers and industry heavyweights, glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes, and we’ve even helped him live stream from a couple of conventions.
All of this helps to cement Chad’s brand positioning as an authority in this industry who can be trusted, knows his stuff, and has a collection of some of the best products in the business.
Content Marketing
Last but certainly not least, there is the content marketing we’ve been doing for Chad, which offers yet another opportunity to highlight Jackpot Sports Cards’ brand positioning.
