Suffering, Acceptance, & Games
What the hell is going on when playing feels like suffering? Being bad at a game often feels bad to me. That’s most true when I think I *should* be competent, or when I’m playing with my close peers, people I feel competitive with. Being bad at a game feels terrible when I’m emotionally attached to a specific outcome, especially if I think I’m failing my team. But this suffering is worse in…

Lots to say about Ahsoka but for now, I wanna talk about Thrawn. After Andor I knew this would be a problem, because it was a problem back in Rebels too.
Thrawn isn't built for these stories. During Rebels, they just put a mask of competency on him while still handing him L after L. "These losses are all part of my plan" "The rebels escaped but I meant for that to happen" ect ect. Just thwarted by the scooby doo gang. Cause let's be honest the rebels crew aren't exactly strategists.
Then in Andor, we get competence. Not brilliance mind you like Syril was still a buffoon. But the ISB came of as so threatening just because they were able to do their jobs without slipping on banana peels. We've now seen how dangerous the empire can be when they crack down and try.
But we're talking Thrawn. Whatever the ISB are? He should be playing in a different league. Competency vs sheer genius. I mean after all this entire season was about how dire things would be if Thrawn made it back to the galaxy.
And what do we get? "Oh these are acceptable losses, oh they won this round but that showed me their flaws. Oh we don't want to waste our precious resources now do we" Proceeds to throw away a few dozen troopers and a bunch of tie fighters. It's the same as it was in rebels. A mask of false threat over just another imperial.
If I'm a normal person watching this show, and have no concept of rebels, much less the heir to the empire trilogy, I can't imagine they get the sense that Thrawn is a big deal at all.

finished up my arbites tonight and also got my 3d printer working again after quite a while. first thing I decided to print were some C-ROC cruisers for my separatist fleet now that they have access to them, and I didn't want to use the empire gozanti carrier models, and I'm really happy how they turned out for a first print, tho I might try again

bonus, here they are with the rest of the CIS fleet on a very messy work station

More little tinies! This time a couple squads of Delta-7 Aethersprites. I decided to theme a few of these after actual fighters from the movies, so you've got Anakin and Obi-Wan in there. Bonus points to anyone who knows who the last themed one belongs to!

Why Tiny-Scale Wargames?
Tumblr media
For me, a wargame succeeds or fails based on how it makes me think. When I look down at the pieces on the table, am I thinking about strategy? About the drama of my little guys? Or am thinking about little plastic toys on a table?
The default scale for miniatures games is just close enough that you can see your individual figures doing things. That makes sense. The companies want to sell toys, so you want to make a game where the toys do cool things.
But, once you zoom out far enough that individuals no longer matter, something amazing happens. Your perspective shifts, and you begin thinking of your little tabletop battle in the same way you'd think of a real battle. The game is no longer about individuals, but lines of battle, flanks, and C&C.
Space Marines in Epic Armageddon don't win because Lieutenant Ironpecs is really good at hitting things with a sword, they win because they follow orders when other armies would be struggling with morale.
Battles in Drop Zone Commander aren't won on shooting, they're won by seeing ways to use the terrain to create a place for your transports to land.
Darth Vader may be terrifying, but in Star Wars Armada, he's one guy in one TIE Fighter among hundreds.
That's something you can't get from squad-scale wargames, and that's why you should care about games with tiny miniatures.

Toy blog update.
I know it's been a while since my last post, but I have been VERY busy with trying to resume my YouTube channel which I walked away from 4 years ago, and a new job, and life in general has been busy. I am still working on my backlog, but I wanted to post some of my recent hauls over the past two months.
Anyway, I will be posting again soon, I hope.
See you around.

Played Armada yesterday again. Unfortunately only one game instead if the customary 2, but it was still entertaining. I tried my „Ignition Spam“ list; it was nice, however my opponent fielded Thermal Shielded Venators with a focus on Salvo, which took away a lot of fun and resulted in no ships at all being lost.

My ships on the right; you can see the Ignition tokens on the board. Lessons learned:
-Evasive Action is a must have for Republic ships
-Mercy Mission rocks
Also, let‘s see how the other table did….

I… I don‘t even know what‘s going on here 😂

a 6 round game of star wars armada. I was commanding a rebel grab bag flying 3 new ships, the mc80, the rebel version of the providence class, and my beloved little mc30, plus admiral akbar on the corvette. I managed to secure a narrow victory against a 6 ship Republic list (those little councilor class ships can pack a punch, especially when there's 3 of them flying around). we also used some of my recently 3d printed obstacles, we had one astroid field and one debris field, and I'll hopefully have a completed set soon
my mc30 was just as amazing as I thought it would be, even if I mispiloted a little. I deployed a little too close, so I had to swing the mc30 wide to the right turn 1 to avoid a collision. I would've wanted it to get to the action sooner and get some better shots in, but having it go wide actually won me the game. I managed to pick off a few small ships early on, but my providence went down turn 3 before getting to activate, and the mc80 went down a few turns later, but it managed to tear into both the victory and acclimator while it was still space worthy. on the last turn, the mc30 swooped behind the acclimator and victory, getting two beautiful close range shots into both of them, taking them both down before evading a hail of fire from the enemy flagship pelta. in the end, had the mc30 had one hull point left, exhausting the last of its defenses to barely hang on, but hang on it did. anakin was no match for akbar, but he put up a good fight. mc30 was definitely the MVP, I want two more of them.
