IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR.
Perhaps I've been watching too much Star Trek Discovery.
What you're viewing is some of the largest exposed precambrian rock on the face of Earth. Say that ten times fast.
While researching the area I surprisingly discovered the appearance of the Canadian Shield is not so much a result of folding, faulting or compression of rock over millions of years, but rather the work of ice in recent geological time.
So cool.

SPRING THAW.
The province of Ontario (Canada) is experiencing its annual spring thaw. River water levels tend to be high as snow melts. GRAND RIVER, located in southwest Ontario is no exception. Its waters flow through traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral peoples en-route to emptying into the north shore of Lake Erie.
THE PHOTOGRAPH.
I took a few minutes to watch and listen to the current. Being prepared allowed for just the right amount of time to capture a few frames. GRAND RIVER was shot in Apple's ProRes RAW format using multiple exposures, with a couple of filters mounted on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
IPHONOGRAPHY.
If you've been following me you know it's taken a few years for me to become truly comfortable with using a mobile phone to create high quality images suitable for printing. I felt, for the most part, the resulting images weren't detailed enough. I've been using tried-and-true full-size camera gear ever since I first brought a camera's viewfinder to my eye.
After I was done, I slipped the iPhone back into a pocket, and made my way back to dry land. It was a lot easier to do without carrying a full-frame Canon with battery grip and L-Series lenses.
Anyway, learning and adapting is part of the enjoyment. I'm excited to add mobile camera-phone gear to my arsenal of photography tools.

WINTER WONDERLAND OF THE BOREAL FOREST.
River thaw. Water flows beneath the frozen surface of the Current River; the time of year when winter acquiesces to spring.
The crisp air, the silence interrupted only by the occasional rustle of snow falling from branches set the stage for a peaceful moment. It was a perfect opportunity to take in the breathtaking scene, and capture an image. In reality, I was shooting from a bridge when screaming children appeared out of nowhere, converging around me. Like a pack of wolves closing in on its prey, I was surrounded. One nearly knocked camera gear out of my hand into the river below. Groups of parents laughed in the distance, completely oblivious. Beautiful scene.
ANAMORPHIC.
When presented with a scene like WINTER WONDERLAND OF THE BOREAL FOREST, I want to capture as much of it as I can into a frame. An anamorphic lens is one way to do this. Its widescreen aspect ratio along with its optical imperfections give it a cinematic look. It’s a challenging lens to shoot with. That, however, is part of the fun.
IPHONOGRAPHY.
It’s taken me a few years to get on board with shooting on a mobile phone. However, tech has come a long, long way. And the fact is, no photographer carries full-size gear all of the time. But a mobile phone? Almost always. And though this image was captured using an iPhone 13 Mini (love its dimensions), a 15 Pro Max and other phone camera gear is on their way. This type of gear isn’t meant to replace my full-size camera gear, but rather to complement it.

SUNSHINE CASTS SHADOWS ACROSS THE BOREAL FOREST.
For your viewing pleasure... anamorphic goodness in BW, and colour!
Love how shadows dance across the surface of the Boreal Forest. And, green moss is already taking hold on tree roots above the soil. Look closely and you'll witness snow in the background. We're experiencing an early spring thaw in Thunder Bay, Ontario (Canada). Other areas of the forest are ice-covered. This patch of land receives enough sunlight that the ice has now melted away.

THUNDER BAY: URBAN ECHOES IN THE WILDERNESS.
Driving on Red River Road, keeping warm in my vehicle in the bitter cold of a polar vortex, I was struck once again, of how beautiful this part of the world is. Testing camera mounts I had installed on the dash the idea came to light that I should create a photography series to share what locals view every day.

WINTER SCENE OF THE LEUTY LIFEGUARD STATION.
Tumblr media
Above: Saving thousands of lives since 1920.
NESTLED ALONG THE SHORES OF...
...Lake Ontario in Toronto's east end, the Leuty Lifeguard Station is a staple attraction as one strolls along the boardwalk.
Since it was built in 1920 by Chapman and Oxley architects, the Leuty Lifeguard Station has helped to save thousands of lives. Over the years it has been moved four times to keep it close to Lake Ontario's edge. During the 1980's the Leuty had fallen into disrepair and was threatened with demolition. Local residents formed S.O.S. (Save Our Station), and enough money was raised to restore the structure. It has since been declared an important historic site by the Toronto (Canada) Historical Board.

FOCUS AND THE AQUARIUM.
Tumblr media
Above: low-light photograph of the LOWBOY planted riverscape aquarium.
Welcome back. In an earlier post I introduced aquaria / fish keeping in KEEPING A HOBBY OUTSIDE OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Photography and fish keeping are two distinct practices, however when the occasion arises, they can be combined to create visually stunning images of aquariums and their inhabitants.
THE LOWBOY.
The LOWBOY project is a planted riverscape aquarium measuring four feet long and two feet deep. It's an eco-system and style I'd been interested in for a few years. This type of shallow aquarium is often used as a frag tank for growing out corals in a saltwater environment. I thought it would also be a unique style to showcase a wide, underwater view of a freshwater planted aquascape.
FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.
When creating images of an aquarium this length and depth, and the goal is to have the entire tank and it's contents in focus, the challenge is to actually get everything in focus.
Reflections and distortions caused by water and glass (both your aquarium's and your camera's lens), depth of field, light and the tank's geometry can impact image quality. And of course there are other creative decisions to consider. An important one is:
"Do I want to freeze frame swimming fish, or do I want to incorporate some blur to portray their movement in the water?".
PHOTOSTACKING.
In this LOWBOY photograph, eleven captures laid on top of one another, each with a different focal point, ensure focus throughout the LOWBOY is tack sharp the entire length and depth of the aquarium. Downside, or upside depending on your point of view, is that it gives the illusion of many more fish in the tank.
Creating a mood in the photograph via light emanating from the aquarium, ambient light and / or additional lighting is another consideration.
This is a fun photography project. With the holiday season upon us, some will be starting their own aquaria journey, or maintaining their existing aquarium/s. Try this technique to create beautiful images of your aquascapes.

HILLTOP VILLAGE.
Tumblr media
Above: a 2003 photograph revamped 2023.
Hungary is known for its charming countryside with rolling hills and quaint villages. As I was working on COUNTRYSIDE VILLAGE I was reminded that a scene such as this can evoke the imagination. It can speak thousands of words. The creation of atmosphere, perhaps of a children's book.
Children's books often draw inspiration from real-world landscapes to create magical and timeless settings. This hilltop village could serve as a delightful backdrop for a story featuring curious characters, hidden secrets, and heartwarming moments.
THE PHOTOGRAPH.
COUNTRYSIDE VILLAGE was captured with a Nikon E5000 camera. An early model digital camera; it had a 5 megapixel sensor. By today’s standards this is very small. I don’t believe one can even purchase a new 5 megapixel camera anymore. As technology and my post production techniques improved over the years I’ve revisited my photographs of Hungary a couple of times.

REVISITING A PHOTOGRAPH.
Tumblr media
Above: OCTOBER 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR, Lake Superior, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada.
BACKSTORY.
The timestamp is 5:05am. The time when I applied finger pressure on the shutter release and captured the ORIGINAL WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR. I remember how peaceful and whisper quiet that summer morning was. I felt content as I took in the scene. The rising sun over Thunder Bay's former Manitoba Pool 2 grain elevator as it illuminated the morning sky. Rays of sunlight reflecting off Lake Superior’s surface. I was confident images being captured inside my camera were good.
I didn’t think I’d come back to that shoot… to this photograph in particular. This past January I revisited the original photograph to perform additional work on it to better reflect how I felt and witnessed the scene when I captured it.
Tumblr media
Above: JANUARY 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR.
The interesting thing about the process of shooting is what the photographer witnesses, captures and commits to memory vs. a camera may be quite different. In my view post production is where those two avenues meet and a picture comes together. This doesn’t really apply to shooting in-studio where most elements are in the photographer’s control without too many surprises.
I thought my January 2023 version was the final image. I was incorrect. Yesterday I re-visited the photograph and thought it didn’t accurately reflect the moment I captured it. I could make it…. better. An updated version for October 2023.
UPDATING THE PHOTOGRAPH.
For photographers reading this, you may find the following interesting. I spent some time revamping the image and share details of the process below. The October 2023 version of the photograph is now heavily stylized compared to the original.
Which photograph one prefers will come down to personal taste.
COLOURS
Warm colours of the sunlight, especially the reds and oranges were enhanced to better reflect the mood. Colours in general throughout the photograph were warmed up, though some cool blue was left as the morning air was on the cool side. Reflections off the water’s surface have been enhanced. The atmosphere of the image now better reflects the low light that was quickly changing as the sun rose.
EXPOSURE
By changing the exposure, the photograph better reflects the low light of the moment, which was quickly increasing due to the rising sun.
CONTRAST
Smoothing out highlights and shadows makes for more of a muted appearance which better reflects the time of low-light capture.
BLUR
The water’s surface now has a beautiful, silky blur. The original image was captured with a one second shutter speed, therefore little blur exists. There’s a human subject in the image who wasn’t asked to sit perfectly still to allow for a longer exposure. In addition, the quickly changing light levels didn’t make this practical and would’ve altered the sun-ray details.
CROPPING
The image ratio and the image itself has been slightly cropped, making for a stronger story.
FINISH
Analog film effect added.
Tumblr media
Above: ORIGINAL: WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR.
WRAP-UP.
As you can see there are many details to occupy your thoughts during and after the shoot. I’m quite happy with the new OCTOBER 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR, and don’t think I’ll be pursuing more work on it. But as the saying goes:
Never Say Never 😄.

THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE, BUDAPEST HUNGARY.
Tumblr media
Above: a 2003 photograph of the Danube, Europe's second longest river after the Volga.
Welcome back. I’ve been revisiting photographs I captured on my travels, including Hungary. Today's photograph is THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE. In an earlier post I shared another photograph from the same period, FISHERMAN BASTION OVERLOOKING THE DANUBE.
THE PHOTOGRAPH.
THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE, from 2003, was captured with a Nikon E5000 camera. An early model digital camera; it had a 5 megapixel sensor. By today’s standards this is very small. I don’t believe one can even purchase a new 5 megapixel anymore. As technology and my post production techniques improved over the years I’ve revisited my photographs of Hungary a couple of times. Subtle but beautiful changes in THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE include the addition of water blur and digital vs. optical tilt-shift. The photograph was also cropped to a 16:10 ratio to provide a tighter shot. I personally struggle with this because I sometimes feel important story is being lost. In this instance the sky has been cropped as well as the bottom of the frame, which takes away an indication of the distance I was away from the river when I captured the image. We also lose clouds and the sun's gold reflection in them.
The photograph was captured through a glass window which created the red reflection on a third of the photograph's left and right side. I chose to leave it because it sparks my memory. It may also provide a hint to the viewer that the scene was captured through a glass window... perhaps an adjoining apartment or hotel?
An earlier, uncropped version of this photograph may be viewed HERE.
HISTORY OF THE DANUBE.
The Danube is Europe's second longest river after the Volga. It is notable for being classified as an international waterway.
The river originates in the Black Forest in Germany as the much smaller Brigach and Breg rivers which join at the German town of Donaueschingen. After that it is known as the Danube and flows southeastward for a distance of some 2850 km (1771 miles), passing through four Central and Eastern European capitals, before emptying into the Black Sea via the Danube Delta in Romania and Ukraine.
Known to history as one of the long-standing frontiers of the Roman Empire, the river flows through or acts as part of the borders of ten countries: Germany (7.5%), Austria (10.3%), Slovakia (5.8%), Hungary (11.7%), Croatia (4.5%), Serbia (10.3%), Bulgaria (5.2%), Moldova (1.6%), Ukraine (3.8%) and Romania (28.9%).

FISHERMAN BASTION OVERLOOKING THE DANUBE, BUDAPEST HUNGARY.
Tumblr media
Above: Fisherman Bastion is also known as the Hal·szb·stya.
Welcome back. I’ve been revisiting photographs I captured on my travels, including Hungary.  In an earlier post I shared another photograph from the same period, DOCKED CANOES IN THE HUNGARIAN COUNTRYSIDE.
THE PHOTOGRAPH.
FISHERMAN BASTION OVERLOOKING THE DANUBE, from 2003, was captured with a Nikon E5000 camera. An early model digital camera; it had a 5 megapixel sensor. By today's standards this is very small. I don't believe one can even purchase a new 5 megapixel anymore. As technology and my post production techniques improved over the years I've revisited my photographs of Hungary a couple of times. Subtle but beautiful changes in FISHERMAN BASTION OVERLOOKING THE DANUBE include the replacement of the sky and the addition of water blur. The image was captured through a glass window which helped create the red fringe / vignette on the bottom left side of the photograph. I chose to leave it because it sparks my memory.
HISTORY OF THE HAL·SZB·STYA.
The Hal·szb·stya is one of the best known monuments in Budapest. A fascinating attraction is its architecture and panoramic view of Budapest. Hungary as a whole has a remarkable history going back to the 9th century. It's reflected within its walls and architecture.
The original walls of the Fisherman Bastion were built in the 1700s, forming part of the walls of a castle. Historians note that in the Middle Ages this section of castle walls was protected by the guild of fishermen (halász), who lived under the walls in the so-called Fishtown or Watertown. The current structure was built between 1895 and 1902 by architect Frigyes Schulek, on a stretch of the Buda Castle wall's base. Between 1947-48, the son of Frigyes Schulek, J·nos Schulek, completed a restoration of the Matthias Church after its near destruction during World War II.

DOCKED CANOES IN THE HUNGARIAN COUNTRYSIDE.

THE PHOTOGRAPH.
DOCKED CANOES IN THE HUNGARIAN COUNTRYSIDE, from 2003, was captured with a Nikon E5000 camera. In a previous post I shared another photograph from the same period, THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE. Also shot with the same Nikon E5000. An early model digital camera; it had a 5 megapixel sensor.
I'd been traveling all over Hungary touring wineries when this scene was captured. The country was experiencing a heatwave. We kept our fingers crossed in hopes our vehicle wouldn't overheat.
With a chilly autumn now here in Northern Ontario (Canada) DOCKED CANOES IN THE HUNGARIAN COUNTRYSIDE is a nice send-off to summer.

KEEP A HOBBY OUTSIDE OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
Tumblr media
Above: Lush greenery of the LOWBOY PLANTED AQUARIUM comes to view during the artificial sunrise of aquarium lighting.
It’s important to have interests outside of photography. Stepping away to explore, to utilize our talents and curiosity in other areas is nourishing for the soul, not to mention our mental health. Hobbies are perfect for this. Keep it fun. Try new things.
Several interests and hobbies outside of making pictures grab my attention. Aquaria is but one. Aquariums and fish keeping has been with me since I was a kid. Over the years I’ve had many aquariums including a high-tech coral reef. Learning about fish, water chemistry, light and how to create and maintain an artificial ecosystem is incredibly rewarding. Depending on where you reside, there may be a thriving community where one can meet like-minded people, share knowledge, and buy / trade sea-creatures, plants and gear.
One can immediately see how knowledge of light in photography crosses over to light needed to help grow and sustain life in saltwater and freshwater aquariums. And, brackish tanks of course.
THE LOWBOY.
My latest aquaria project, now running for several months, is a 50 gallon freshwater planted riverscape. Measuring 4 feet (L) by 2 feet (W) by 10 inches (H), this style of tank is named LOWBOY, as this is what its dimensions refer to. This setup includes aquatic plants harvested over several months from small clippings. It’s a cool-water ecosystem home to a school of about 40 fish, with a few other inhabitants and species of plant life. It is referred to as a high-tech planted aquarium because it utilizes CO2 injection and high quality spectrum of lighting. The aquarium rests on a custom-designed extruded aluminum stand which is both light in weight and incredibly strong. It has a minimalistic, industrial look that I find appealing as a juxtaposition to the rest of the room where it is situated.
WRAP-UP.
Designing the aquascape, water flow, filtration, lighting and feeding requirements to make an aquarium thrive is a creative process, somewhat of trial and error until one gets it just right. It’s a lot of fun. Just remember that planning and patience is key to being successful in this rewarding hobby.
A bonus of being a photographer is it provides an opportunity for a challenging project. Creating still images of an aquarium, such as the photograph in this post of the LOWBOY, with its combination of low ambient light, artificial sunrise of the aquarium lighting, moving and still subjects, reflections and geometry, make for an interesting shoot. One could choose to perfect the scene with complete cable management of the aquarium. Perhaps that'll be a future project as the setup is still in its infancy.
There’s such variety in aquariums and fish keeping that it easily can be a life long pursuit.
I hope you found this interesting. What hobbies interest you?
STAY CONNECTED.
